how's it going everybody I want to do a little side by side showing the differences in size primarily between an M&P compact and an M&P shield caliber between these two is negligible as far as overall size goes okay I'll kind of address that as this goes along both of these handguns primarily are designed for personal defense concealed carry okay I took the liberty of going on Smith & Wesson's website printed out downloaded info about the two if you have either one in a nine-millimeter or in a 40-caliber the differences between a compact 9 and 40 is virtually none between a shield 9 and 40 the difference is virtually none when it comes to size the only differences you're really going to have is going to be in magazine capacity and that isn't that much either whenever you look at a sheet a compact in a 9 millimeter you are going to have 12 plus 1 capacity with a standard flat baseplate magazine 12 plus 1 and a 9/10 plus 1 and a 40 in a shield in a 9 millimeter you are going to have a 7 plus 1 in a standard flat baseplate magazine in a 40 caliber is going to be 6 plus 1 so we'll get that out of the way right now because that is really going to be the only differences between the 2 in their own specific model and type okay both of these are very very good handguns I've had them both for a little while I have not had any issues with either one of them I really like the MMP series and I just want to show the differences between the two and talk just a little bit about the comfort between a thinner versus a fatter handgun anybody that's been doing any concealed carry for any period of time well knows that the thinner and lighter a gun is the more comfortable it's going to be to carry now there are people out there that say you know the weight and all this and stuff it doesn't bother me that's great then I mean you have a much larger pool of handguns to choose from to carry but most people including myself I like to have as thin and as light a handgun as I can and still maintain good firepower caliber size you know not like a 22 long rifle versus a 45 ACP okay these two are both like I said the MMP series they both have a dovetailed front and rear sight now these rear sights back here have a little bit of adjustment on they're both three dot no night sights they both have the same slide they both have stainless steel slides with that mellow night finish on them and polymer frames this compact happens to have the thumb safeties on it the shield has a thumb safety as well although it does not stick out and look as gaudy as it does on the compact model okay the compact safety is ambidextrous the shield is only on the left side for a right-handed shooter the vast majority of people do not like thumb safeties on their concealed carry personal defense type of guns they feel that the longer trigger pull the safeties that are built into the gun is is sufficient and I agree with that you know I do if you have your head on right and you are efficient and experienced with firing and handling your gun you should not have any problem but I old-school do not mind the Safety's my thoughts may change on that sometime if I ever do god forbid have to use this and I'll pull it out and go to use it I fail forget swipe that safety off but I trained with swiping it off okay it's real quick and easy to do a lot easier to take off than to put on but nonetheless okay the differences between these two is going to primarily be the width of the firearm the compact series is 1.20 inches wide okay the shield is 0.95 inches now I've been going over this in my head but where I come from that's 0.25 inches difference that is 1/4 of an inch so the shield is a quarter of an inch narrower than the compact there is a definite visual difference that you can see the height of these guns to me is virtually identical okay Smith & Wesson's website claims that the shield is 3.7 inches high and the compact is like 3.5 I'm sorry the overall height on the compact they say is 4.3 inches and the shield they say is 4.6 so three tenths of an inch taller is the shield i lay both of these down on their heads and pull them up I'm hard-pressed to see that nonetheless barrel length shield 3.1 compact 3.5 the overall length on the tube if I had a better memory I could tell you this six point seven inches on the compact overall length on the shield is going to be six point one inches the weight on the to the shield 19 ounces whether it's 40 Smith & Wesson or nine millimeter 19 ounces the compact is going to be 20 1.7 ounces for the nine twenty one point nine ounces for the 40 these obviously or of course are unloaded weights with an empty magazine inserted so it's really nice a negligible between the two in their own specific models but whenever you start comparing the two against one another the shield is almost two full three ounces lighter okay with the shield you are going to give up apples to apples nine millimeter to nine millimeter you're going to give up seven rounds in the shield okay in the mag seven rounds in a standard flat baseplate magazine we're in a nine millimeter compact you're going to get twelve rounds so you do have a fair amount more capacity I mean it's almost double the firepower between the two so that's kind of a personal call if you if you have you know guns like this and you're like me you like a thinner lighter gun as possible and you carry a gun that's you know almost an inch and a quarter thick versus one that's under an inch thick I mean to me I'm going to grab this one every time you know if I'm just going out on the town just going around not going to a firefight not anything like that I'm going to take the one that is and that is thinner still gives me 9 millimeter or 40 caliber ammo power but I will give up a few rounds for the thinner lighter gun in most personal defense situations you are not going to be standing there unloading a magazine into somebody you shouldn't be anyway you know one to three shots is usually going to negate any type of situation you're in so for that reason I will play the odds and go with one that is thinner and lighter I know that you know you have to have a gun that you are comfortable carrying and you will carry consistently you know you might look at it saying you know well I want to carry this one because it has more bullets in it well that one with more bullets in it is not going to do you a bit of good if you don't carry it because you're like man I don't like carrying that thing because it's too darn heavy so you got to keep that in mind to which gun are you going to consistently carry because it is more comfortable to carry on your belt between these two the setups on them is really really close they both have stainless steel slides they both have the same style chamber loaded chamber indicator z' on them the triggers on the two are set up the same okay they both have Smith & Wesson's little gizmo here that you know it kind of pivots right in there like that the shield is the same style now this is not going to be the same on every gun I don't care what anybody says or what Smith & Wesson says they say the trigger pull on both of these is six and a half pounds well I pull the two of these and just sit here and pull these triggers and you got your take-up it stops it doesn't have any creep but I can tell you right here in front of you that the shield trigger my particular one that trigger is heavier than on this compact model okay both of them have good triggers there's not a bunch of mush there's not a bunch of creeps you take out the the excess travel here pull these things back they stop and they don't move until you exert the proper pressure to make them go off but this one here has it more rounds through it than the shield does ie this is a nine millimeter this is going to be cheaper to shoot than this I mean 40 Smith & Wesson ammo today is getting about as expensive it's 45 but they're both fantastic guns these are the only 2 mm peas I've ever owned and I like them both but whenever it comes to going out the door with one strapped on my hip which one am I going to take with me 95% of the time it's going to be the one that's thinner and the one that's lighter even though I am giving up some magazine capacity so just wanted to kind of do a side-by-side with these two no ground shaking earth-shattering information here but when I go looking for videos trying to compare or maybe a couple of guns I'm thinking about do I want to get a compact or do I want to get the shield is it better to have more rounds or less rounds this is just my thought process on you need to have the gun that you are going to have on your side when you go out of the house and if there's a potential that you grab this bill I meant you know this shield feels a lot better it's skinnier it's a little lighter than this you got to weigh it out it's all the personal preference there's lots of people out there that have no problem carrying a fat or heavier gun they want the extra firepower all personal preference thanks for watching guys y'all take care we'll talk to you later see
