he's a concept other people know god informationally but god is after so much more than that all through the bible the one ingredient you need if you're serious about getting to know god is a passion for it you gotta want it if you don't know god if you're not pursuing the knowledge of god that means your life is not being lived for the purpose you were created we regularly hear people say well i want to know god's will for my life who aren't pursuing the person of god don't go looking for the plan look for the planner and the holy spirit's job is to turn up the light so that you see god more clearly and experience him more personally when you are growing in your knowledge of god the life of christ is going to be reproduced in you the bible calls it the fruit of the spirit in galatians 5. your god who wants to get to know you will use a crisis for deliverance so that you get to see him and so that you understand that his wisdom is greater than your knowledge i want you to come out of this series with a fire that says to god i want to know you i want to draw near to you i want to experience you i want to abide with you i want to get close to you i want to fulfill the purpose that you have i want to hear from you [Music] the kingdom agenda well good morning this is the day that the lord has made and i share we shall rejoice and be glad in it hello my name is pastor bobby gibson i'm the lead associate pastor oakley bible fellowship aka pastor g well i'm excited and delighted that i was invited to welcome you to our online service today you are in for a treat we come to lift up the name of jesus and the month of august our pastor senior pastor dr tony evans he takes it off to recuperate and rest and just get ready for the fall i asked all of you to be praying for him during this month that he would hear from god and come back excited motivated and stimulating now at the end of the message today which we have brother jonathan evans which is pastor son is going to be preaching today from the topic of losing is winning but at the end of his message i want you to stay tuned because we're going to take communion together today so it's time now to worship so what i want you to do is get out of that recliner get up off that couch dr hawkins come out of that bed cause it's time to lift up the name of jesus because when praises go up blessings come down enjoy our worship and praise team right now why don't you just stand up in the middle of your living room and just let out a big shout and save family let the praise begin come on put those hands together like of [Music] jesus is lord i love your hands together it might have been tough this week to get your brains on the devil's been on your back if you don't have a reason to praise him let me give you one here [Music] come on somebody that just knows them say lord you're here you're here among us you're here in our house father we give you praise hallelujah we give you glory we honor your presence in experience and that's what we want it to be and experience we want you to experience god with us and us experience god with you and so i'm delighted for my ocbf family because i am ocbf and our this subject but we're going to tackle it in a way to bring healing to the divisions politically and racially and socially and culturally we're experiencing so pray for me but in the meantime my son's jonathan's been doing an epic job losing his winning this week he's going to talk about the pain of pride from joshua chapter 7. but you can also join us for meaningful conversations on wednesday confess that you are lord and shalt bow at this great name and so father we proclaim that right now in our worship that all the earth will have to sing this all of the earth will have to bow come on i want you to say this with me say all the earth say all the your earth our hearts will cry these bones will sing great are you lord come on say it again make the declaration all the earth will shine time say it great [Music] hey everyone welcome back to our series that we're going through this month losing is winning and we're talking about the battle of ai joshua chapter 7 and i want to continue there at joshua chapter 7 verse 5 through 7 as we continue our series this month and today we're going to be talking about the pain of pride the pain of pride in joshua chapter 7 verse 5 it says the men of aei struck down about 36 of their men and pursued them from the gate as far as cherubim and struck them down on their descent and so the hearts of the people melted and became like water then joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the lord before the ark of the lord until the evening both he and the elders of israel and they put dust on their heads joshua said a last o lord why did you ever bring this people over the jordan only to deliver us into the hands of the amorites to destroy us if only we had been willing to dwell beyond the jordan here joshua is experiencing a whole lot of pain like many of us are experiencing right now he's experiencing that pain and he's before the lord and i just want to say it backwards so that so that we can really feel the way that joshua feels right now he's on his knees in prayer before the lord and he's saying lord it would have been better if we were not even in the promise it would have been better if we had been willing just to dwell in the wilderness to dwell beyond the jordan alas o lord did you bring us here just to destroy us to allow us to go downhill like this to allow us to be defeated by the amorites i fell on my face before the ark of the lord the elders put dust on their heads because the hearts of the people melted because we were struck down on our way down and 36 of our men perished in battle joshua is experiencing pain right now and he's before the lord in prayer and he's saying a last o lord it would have been better if you would have just left us on the other side of our promise because of the difficulty that he was experiencing and a lot of us are saying those same prayers right now because of the difficulty that we're experiencing we're saying a last o lord it would have been better if i never planted or started this ministry only for it to get decimated by covet and things not work out a last o lord it would have been better if i didn't do what you say and reconciled and forgave this person because of the havoc that it's causing with my friends and family things are not working out there's this tug of war that's going on many of us are saying what joshua is saying a last o lord it would have been better if i had never jumped that broom a last o lord it would have been better even if i had not committed my life to you and i would have just stayed in egypt instead of trying to make my way to the promise of victory through jesus christ because things have gotten difficult for me a last o lord it would have just been better if i didn't accept my calling and i went my way and not your way because your way seems to go further downhill seems to hurt even more we're saying what joshua is saying a last o lord and i know that's my prayer a lot of times but notice that joshua is reactive in prayer not proactive in prayer god is not found in his battle or at the beginning of his battle but only when the battle is lost so he's spending his time reacting to god in prayer and not being proactive to god in prayer it would have been nice if god if he fell before the face of god before the battle before he entered in his situation instead of reactively but a lot of times i noticed this is how i pray and this is how a lot of christians pray out there and we spend our time with god this way that i spend more time with god when i'm losing than when i'm winning god hears from me when things are going down not when things are up and god is saying to me in my devotion when i'm feeling and like joshua is feeling and when i'm going through defeat and difficulty like i have and my family has for especially the last two years and and we're losing and and things aren't going well i can hear the lord speak back to me as i'm saying oh last oh lord he's saying alas my child i told you to be patient in philippians 4 6 be anxious for nothing but in everything with prayer and supplication make your request known to me because i'm the one that can give you peace in what you're going through that can surpass all understanding that's proactive john john not reactive he's saying alas my child i told you in first thessalonians 5 17 to pray without ceasing that means do not cease praying that's proactive jonathan that's not reactive jonathan he's saying alas my child i told you in second chronicles 2015 that the battle is not even yours that you're going through but it belongs to me so how can you not invite me into that battle you're saying a last o lord jonathan but i'm saying alas my child i told you in first corinthians 15 58 be steadfast unmovable always abound in the work of the lord and know that it will not go in vain that is proactive that is not reactive jonathan i'm trying to get you to be on offense and not just defense for all of the christians out there who are listening to this and people coming into the faith god wants us to be on offense not just defense we're saying a last o lord and god is looking at us and saying alas my child i told you in john 15 that if you abide in me and my word abides in you then you can ask whatever it is and it will be done for you that's proactive not just reactive as christians we spend a lot of our time reacting to the culture reacting to the difficulty reacting to the battle reacting to the defeat and the loss and the discouragement and the hurt and the pain and god is saying the same god that you're using for a reaction and root and to be reactive is the same god that i am proactively and so god wants us to come to him all the time and pray without ceasing and joshua is reacting to the loss that he's experienced i'm experiencing in my own life that it's better to be patient in prayer than it is to be hasty to your own defeat i want to make sure i say that again that it's better to be patient in prayer than it is to be hasty to your own defeat it's better to start with god than to end with god after going through what we're going through we need him all the time and joshua is on his knees pleading with god saying a last o lord and god is saying alas my child i can't tell you how many calls i've sent and how many calls i've received right now during these multiple pandemics that we're going through right now and everybody wants to pray and that is a good thing but we should have been solemn having solemn assemblies and praying and going to the lord proactively not just reactively and so he's teaching us this because right now joshua is experiencing the pain of his pride and he's now in position to win don't you know that god will allow you to experience a loss so that you're repositioned to win joshua is experiencing the pain of his pride because god wants to eradicate the pride that caused the pain and that's what god will allow us to do that's why he says in his word that those who humble themselves will be exalted but those who exalt themselves they will in fact be humbled it's always better for us to be in his will and in his presence i raised pit bulls when i was in college a lot of you guys don't know that about me but in college that's how i made money i bred pit bulls and i sold the puppies i realized that there was a demand so i created a supply you know i was doing my my economics and i found a way to make money in college and so i raised pit bulls and one of the things that i loved about pit bulls is the size of their heads pit bulls have big heads i mean i had a dog named deuce who had a 24 and a half inch head yeah that's right a 24 and a half inch head this dog named deuce and so i remember having him in the backyard and i spent a lot of money and paid a hefty price for deuce to be in this backyard and to be safe he had victory in the price that i paid i paid a hefty price for deuce to already have victory i mean i had his toys i had uh i had a female back there i married him so that i can have puppies biblically by the way i had his female back there i had his food and his water back there as well so he had everything that he needed and i had a six-foot fence so i wasn't worried but deuce was running back and forth looking through the fence he was looking through the fence and he was running back and forth wagging his tail so i knew he was trying to get to something that was outside of the fence but i figured he wouldn't get to it so i went inside and i wasn't paying attention because i had six foot fence but even though i had six foot fence deuce really wanted to get to whatever it was that had him running back and forth against the fence line so he started digging underneath the fence he started digging the ground up to see if he can go under because he knew he couldn't get over so he's digging underneath the fence and finally he believed that he had done dug deep enough in order to go underneath the fence to get to whatever he was trying to get to so he went under the fence and he took a shot at it but what he didn't consider was the size of his head he didn't remember that he had a big head it was 24 and a half inches and when he went under the fence his head got stuck between the ground and the bottom of the fence his head was stuck because he didn't consider the size of his head when he was trying to get out of his master's yard and so now that he's stuck in a situation that he can't get himself out of what is what is he going to do he's going to react he's going to be reactive because he wasn't proactive and staying in my yard so now he's calling on the master you know how it sounds hey hey hey hey dog is calling on the master and i hear him outside i'm like what is wrong with deuce and so i go outside and i look and i see that he's stuck in a situation that he can't get himself out of that he wasn't okay with the price that i already paid to give him victory he was trying to find something outside of my yard and because i paid a high price i was a little mad i was i was a little heated that he tried to get outside of my yard so because i'm not god i'm a decent master but i'm not a perfect master i mocked him i couldn't help it i said yeah that's what you get you shouldn't have tried to get out of my yard i paid a high price your head is big you should have stayed where you're at and i said it out loud i said it out loud because i wanted to make sure that maya the female dog heard me so that she wouldn't try it i knew they couldn't understand what i'm saying but it made me feel better so what i had to do was inflict more pain on him by pressing him further down i pressed him further down to create the separation between his big head and the fence and then he came back in the yard notice he didn't get what he wanted he still lost what he wanted but the pain that i inflict him afflicted on him at least brought him back to my presence brought him back to victory why because the price that i paid for victory was too high for him to go try to find it somewhere else do i have a witness up in here and no i don't because i'm sitting here by myself we got to fix this y'all we got to do something about this but y'all know what i'm talking about because a lot of times we don't consider the size of our heads when we try to go outside of the victory that god has already given us and that god has already achieved for us it's already in the boundaries of his sovereignty it's already in the boundaries of his will it's already in the bounds of his presence and we must stay in the yard in order to maintain the victory joshua is experiencing the pain of his pride and a lot of us right now even as a country we're experiencing the pain of our pride it says that he fell on his face and said a last o lord it would have been better if i didn't even come notice he's re in reactive prayer and on top of that he's blaming it on god how many times do we blame it on god when we didn't even bring god into the picture god come on you got to do better than this jesus come on now i need you to come through come on god get me out of this situation why'd you even bring me in here and we are in reactive prayer to god it's important that we understand how important god is for victory because he's the only way that we can actually find it it's in the price that he paid now notice that joshua is reactive but i'm so glad that joshua is reactive to the lord it's better to be proactive but in the situations which will happen in our life where we're reactive and not proactive i'm glad that he's falling on his face before the ark of the lord i'm glad that he's returning to the word the ark of the covenant was a chest that had the ten commandments in it the two stone tablets it had the ten commandments in it and that is the word of god and he knows where to go even though he's blaming it on god and even though he had pride his pain is bringing him back to the right position let me just be real with you for a moment there's a lot of people out there who are experiencing pain during this coveted crisis this racial pandemic this job pandemic this eviction pandemic this economic pandemic there are all of these pandemics going on all at the same time and there are a lot of people who are experiencing excruciating pain in their personal lives and in their families but i want to make sure you understand even in a reactionary state you want to return to the lord in prayer and into his word why because there's a lot of people who not only are they reacting but they're reacting to things that aren't the lord there's a lot of people who are listening to this right now who are reacting to alcohol there's a lot of people who are listening to this right now who are reacting to drugs there's a lot of people who are listening to this right now who are reacting to carnal friends and reacting to ba taking a step back from their christian lifestyle and from their faith they're reacting based on their feelings and not their word they're reacting to other things that are not the lord some people are even struggling right now with the thoughts of suicide to take care of this myself instead of coming back to the lord who already paid the price for your victory all he needs is you for you to experience the victory that he already has in him i hope you understand what i'm saying because a lot of times we're running to things that have no power over our victory and to turn our situation around a temporary fix does not give long-term victory i want to encourage you if you're running to something other than god be like joshua joshua is experiencing defeat joshua is experiencing hurt but he falls on his face before the lord he is the one who has the power to turn your situation around and as soon as joshua goes before the lord in verse seven and verse six notice i'm going backwards today in verse seven and verse six he goes before the lord the verse is following 10 11 and 12 the lord encourages joshua in verse 10 he says rise up in verse 13 he says rise up the lord doesn't also encourage joshua watch this he lets him know in verse 11 there is sin inside the camp there is sin inside israel the lord lets joshua know that achan had taken some things from jericho that i told him not to take and there is sin those articles are still inside the camp and joshua you cannot stand before your enemy with those sins inside the camp joshua gained awareness of things that he did not know that caused his defeat of things that he did not know that caused his loss and his devastation because he went to the lord the lord was able to bring him awareness substances can bring you awareness carnal friends don't bring you awareness just running off to a divorce attorney because of how you feel and what's going on that's not going to the lord that doesn't bring you awareness it gives you the rule of american law but it doesn't bring you awareness for you to know what is it on the inside of me that may be causing me to be a part of the loss or difficulty or devastation that i'm going through now it wasn't joshua's fault that he didn't know about what aiken did but he was if he was proactive the same god that was there for him reactive who encouraged him and told him to rise up who gave him knowledge of things that he did not know that needed to be plucked out so that he can have victory is the same god who could have gave him that information proactive and a lot of times people not only are going to the wrong things but they're not even going to god to experience the word of awareness in their life to help them understand how to come back to their marriage because of their new recognition understand what things need to be done differently in their life because of their new recognition now he gives joshua an encouragement he gives him awareness of sin that needs to be plucked out and joshua took care of that and then when you get to chapter eight which we're going to go into next time god gives joshua a new plan he gives him encouragement gives him awareness and gives him a new plan to have victory over the same thing that he felt defeated in i'm trying to tell y'all we have to allow our new positioning because of the pain that we're experiencing take us from losing to winning through the power of god the reason why he got all this because he went before the word the word is like a mirror when you go before the mirror a second uh quran a second corinthians chapter 3 verse 18 says go before the lord with an unveiled face and behold as in a mirror the glory of the lord where you see yourself clearly because the bible is a mirror that reflects back to you things that you may be unaware of because no one can see their face without a mirror so that you can move forward with the plan to actually have victory over what you're going through why was joshua on his face why was joshua uh pleading before the lord why was joshua so low and so humble well because as we're working our way back it says in verse 5 because of the hearts of the people melted the hearts of the people melted the feeling of loss and defeat and joshua is demonstrating that as he went down before the lord the hearts of the people melted now when i looked for melted hearts in the bible i found ezekiel 21 7 it says that the hearts of the people melted the same way it says it here in joshua chapter 7 and it was because they felt the lord their god was against them in ezekiel 21 3 it says the lord was against them in psalm 22 it says my heart melted like wax in psalm 22 14 and at the beginning of psalm it says my god my god why have you forsaken me so any thought or feeling that god would separate himself from me it wasn't just the loss it was the fact that god has withdrawn from me that makes the hearts of the people melt so when i came back to joshua after finding those two illustrations because the bible is consistent in joshua chapter 7 verse 5 when it says the hearts of the people melted i know that it wasn't just the loss it was that the loss made them feel like god had withdrawn it was that the loss made them feel that that god was no longer in their presence and they weren't in god's presence so their hearts melted and i know many of you are asking the question god where are you in exodus 17 the people ask the question is the lord with us or not is the lord with our country or not is the lord with our family our marriage or not is the lord with me in my single life or not is the lord with our ministry or not is the lord with me or not and when you don't feel like the lord is with you it makes the heart melt but we know when we're reminded in hebrews chapter 13 5-6 it says the lord will never leave you or forsake you and we're reminded here in joshua chapter 7 that the lord was there but the lord joshua wasn't waiting on the lord the lord was waiting on joshua the lord had a word the lord had been speaking i know a lot of times when i'm on zoom it just happened not that long ago i was on zoom like everybody's using zoom right now by the way so we're all on zoom and you know they have the option to turn your video off they have the option for you to turn your video off and when you turn your video off it's got your placeholder and your placeholder's not really you it's just a placeholder of you you could be doing something else you could be running off doing something else while giving the facade that you're really there like like you're not there you're just giving the facade that you're there because you put up your placeholder and your placeholder just looking like this i mean it's not you but you look like this you just put up a placeholder to make it seem like it's you but it's not you and i had a couple friends on a call put up a placeholder and i wanted to test them after i gave the plan i said hey you and you not going to put them on blast you and you what did you think about my plan they had the placeholders up i wanted to test them to see if they were listening what did you think about the plan you and you i heard crickets in the backyard nobody said anything so i knew they were there but not there they were off doing something else i said hey you and you are you there what did you think about my plan all of a sudden the video came back on and they said breathing all hard because they ran back in the room and they gave me their face i said hey what did you think about the plan they said well what part of the plan i only had one part to my plan it only had one point i didn't it wasn't that elaborate what did you think about my plan and now even though they're there in video they look like a placeholder they're just sitting there staring at me because they don't know the plan but it's not because i wasn't giving the plan it's just that they gave me a placeholder instead of giving me the real thing a lot of christians are doing that to god we give god a placeholder on sunday while we live an alternate life monday through saturday we give god a placeholder that says we're a christian but we're really focused on our political party we give god a placeholder that says we're committed while we're really uncommitted and being cultural we give god a placeholder that says all of these things when we're really not there we're going about doing our own thing and god is saying i have been speaking but your place holder is not your presence and a lot of times we're not hearing god not because he's not speaking but because we're not literally where joshua is falling on his face before the ark of the covenant and finally it says that they were torn down on their way down and 36 men perished in battle against ai pain notice the verbiage there in verse 5 they were struck down on their descent i don't know if you see that they were struck down on their way down don't you know that being on your way down and being humbled has some pain to it when god humbles you and allows you to be humbled not only are you going down but you're getting kicked while you're down this was a tragic loss for the people of israel like many of us are experiencing and i will close with this when i was playing in the nfl i was struck down on my way down i told my wife i'm going to play in the nfl i had already been cut and traded and hurt and carted off i experienced everything and i and i kind of heard a nibble from god um because i was giving him a placeholder called nfl so i wasn't really listening but i kind of heard him nibbling at me and saying i'm calling you to ministry i'm calling you to to preach my word um and i heard the nibble and even my wife kanika was like babe i think the lord is calling us away from this he's really giving us a lot of signs and but i had my placeholder called the nfl up i really wasn't listening and i got a call from the kansas city chiefs and they said hey come on and play and i said see babe let's go god's will i went out to go work out after hearing the nipples and hearing it from my wife i took an open door which lets me know that every open door doesn't mean it's god's door but i went out there and i started working out with a friend of mine named cletus and we're working out outside and as i was running my 40 i tore my achilles tendon boom hit the ground in pain throbbing grabbing the back of my leg and i can hear god say to me i'm allowing you to be struck down on your way down because i'm not calling you to walk in a way and i'm not gonna allow you to continue to walk in a way that i'm not calling you so i experienced that pain and let me tell y'all it changed the way i walked i i put on a boot after having surgery and i put my crutches on and i limped into dallas theological symmetry because god has a way to allowing you allowing you to lose so that he can reposition you to win now as the chaplain of the dallas cowboys for the last nine years and in doing ministry and even being able to sit here and help my father have a break this victory came from my loss and me experiencing the pain of my pride i pray that everyone out there as you experience the pain you will reposition yourself to god because we're going to find out next week he has a plan for you to win can't wait to see you next week amen wow what a word from reverend jonathan evans you know no pain no gain now i'm going to tell you today if you can't say amen just say ouch because we know that pride is one of the greatest weapons against us in the body of christ so jonathan thank you for that word today that rhema word to let us know that we will go through some pain but god want to humble us and get away from pride so right now it's time for us to enter in together uh to communion communion is not an add-on for us it's a part of worship so i want you to enter into worship with me and communion go ahead and get your your crackers your jews your communion cup whatever you have and so what i want to do for about 60 seconds i just want you to just spend that time just you communicating with god you may have to repent whatever it is you may have a special need you want to ask god for right now so let's just take 60 seconds and do that thank you lord thank you father we worship you god thank you for your broken bottle and thank you for the family of god thank you for that word today thank you for the holy spirit that convicts us of sin we thank you for the blood [Music] [Music] now if you would take your bread isaiah 53 said that he was wounded for our transgression he was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon him and by his stripes we are healed the bible declared on the night that our lord was betrayed he took bread he he blessed it then he broke it and he gave it to his disciples he said this bread represent my body that will be broken just for you say just for me and as often as you eat this bread do it in remembrance of me let's eat together the blood the blood the blood the blood songs say that it reaches to the highest mountain and it flows to the lowest battle so wherever you are up or down the blood can reach you and that night he said in like manny he took the cover he said this cup represents a new covenant in my blood and as often as you drink of this cup do it in remembrance of me let's drink together now let me pray over father thank you for the service today thank you for worship the word and god we thank you for we commune with you at the table of blessing father we thank you for all you're doing in our church and all over the world anyone that's listening today we declare and decree that they are blessed and father we ask that you continue to have your way all this week let that word settle in their heart and god make a difference because god you a prayer answering god and
