and welcome to the minor basilica of our lady of the rosary of manawag my dear friends the temptation of jesus in the desert is a great reminder that temptation in our lives can be overcome if we go to jesus and choose to remain with him today is the first sunday of lent and jesus cross portrays very well the sacrifices and fortitude many of us is experiencing as one family let us pray for each other for its others temptations and sufferings that we may remain faithful as we strive to become channels of god's grace in jesus and so my dear friends for the many times that we have failed him we have failed one another for the many times that we have been unfaithful for our sins for our shortcomings we all say i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have great listen in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault and therefore i asked the blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god with almighty god of mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] lord [Music] see [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their with me lord when i am in trouble because he clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and glorify him be with me lord when i am in trouble the apostle paul exhorts us to place our faith and confidence in the lord jesus who suffered and died and was raised from the dead for our salvation a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does the scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes you the heart and soul is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god please stand [Music] lord [Music] one does that leave one o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry and the devil said to him if you are the son of man and the son of god command this stone to become bread and jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant and the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me and jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then the devil led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command these angels concerning you to guard you and will their hands and wither hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone and jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ please be seated but the gospel ended with the words he departed from him for a time some time ago i was riding a taxi and without opening my mouth the taxi driver asked me the question but instead of telling him who i will vote coming election i was about to educate him about the choices that he's making right now and the implication in the future again why did i remember that because the first temptation of jesus is about our fundamental and basic needs [Music] in other words he knows our weakness is make this stone into bread that's why be wary of the devil because he knows our weaknesses our the first temptation is about our fundamental needs but jesus said it's not my bread alone man lives but by every word that comes from the mouth of god in other words it is possible to overcome that the second temptation is about power at an instant on a glance with all its glitters and everything and him being in control [Music] that's not the reality but that's another human weakness to be in control to be in control protect really first to be in control and one of the things that we know very much about nothing is that we are in control okay you are here because you know very much that many aspects young young relationships 100 percent control we can only do our best and the rest i did my best this is not good enough and that's why i need you to be lord i did my best but my best is not good enough and that's why i need you to be thank you your angels will save you will cut you so that not even your feet will dash upon the stone or do not temp the lord your god do not tempt the lord your god interviews i'm a senior i'm a celebrity those who are in power almost normal but once you become anamborn with leaving a legacy it gets into your head it's scary sapagath it can be very dangerous you forget we forget that what the reason why we are here is to serve the temptation of jesus is not actually for him but it's for us so what can we learn from this temptation of jesus and how we acted on it is that number one no one company of sinners and we realize that we are humbled because we all need the grace of god [Music] because the lord overcame the temptation and so can we through prayers fasting and the discipline problem that's why we can rise again in fullness of his grace i will end the sharing by how i started the homily by reminding us that the devil will leave us and the gospel said for a time because the devil is persistent where sin abounds grace abounds all the more my fellow sinners but my fellow christians jesus showed us the way to overcome these temptations candy austin i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consciousness shall be the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became amen for our sake was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who the father and the son is adored and glorified was spoken through the prophets i believe in one league catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection heavenly father renew us in your covenant of mercy that leads us to our everlasting life with humble hearts we
