mercy i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly seen in my thoughts and my words and what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask mary ever virgin all the angels and saints you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Music] please [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] um [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observance of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen so a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying when the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the lord your god you shall make this response before the lord your god a wandering arab man was my father he went down into egypt and lived there as an alien few in numbers and there he became a great nation mighty and populous when the egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us by opposing hard labor on us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression the lord brought us out of egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm with a terrifying display of power and with signs and wonders and he brought us into this place and gave us this land a land flowing with milk and honey so now i bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you o lord have given me and moses continued you shall set it down before the lord your god and bow down before the lord your god the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] you live in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty will say to the lord my refuge and my fortress my god in whom i trust [Music] no evil shall befall you no scourge come near your tent for he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways be with me lord [Music] they will bear you up so that you will not dash your foot against a stone you will tread on the land and on the adam [Music] the long lion and the serpent you'll trample underfoot [Music] [Applause] [Music] the one who loves me i will deliver i will protect the one who knows my name when he calls to me i will answer him i will be with him in trouble i will rescue him and honor him be with me lord when i am [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you on your lips and in your heart that is the word of faith that we proclaim because if you confess with your lips that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all and is generous to all who call on him 4. everyone who calls on the name of the lord shall be saved the word of the lord [Applause] [Music] praise to you lord king of eternal glory [Music] man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of god [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus full of the holy spirit returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit in the wilderness where for forty days he was tempted by the devil he ate nothing at all during those days and when they were over he was famished and the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become a loaf of bread jesus answered him it is written man does not live by bread alone then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world and the devil said to him to you i will give their glory and all this authority for it has been given over to me i give it to anyone i please if you then will worship me it will all be yours jesus answered him it is written worship the lord your god and serve only him then the devil took him to jerusalem and placed on the pinnacle of the temple saying to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to protect you and on their hands they will bear you up so that you will not dash your foot against a stone and jesus answered him it is said do not put the lord your god to the test now the devil had finished every test he departed from him until an opportune time the gospel of the lord there is a wise and witty saying that we will be freed from our temptations ten minutes after we're dead and there may be a lot of truth in that our life is a life of temptation traditionally we are tempted by the world the flesh and the devil and that's true the world of public opinion tempts us to go along with it to give up our principles and our faith we're tempted to do that that we might get ahead in the world and the flesh we're tempted by pride anger envy lateness lost gluttony all these things within the flesh within the human soul within our own weak humanity in so many ways we are that's why when we are forgiven our sins in the great sacrament of reconciliation we are as pure as on the day we were baptized utterly free of sin by an act of god but two steps out of the confessional and we face pride anger envy greed laziness lost love because they're not outside us but the temptations are within and we are called to resist those temptations the world the flesh and the devil we see that above all in the gospel today anyone who doesn't believe in the devil well hello i don't think that's in the gospel but there we are we must not believe too much in the devil and let our world be driven by fear of satan that is foolish for that is what satan wants but anyone who thinks there is not demonic power in this world has not turned on their tv it's perhaps not in touch with current events and with the ways in which this world is being tempted to go astray and so we need to know how to handle temptations and this first sunday lent helps us and that is as the whole season of lent this is combat training for the spiritual combat of our life and we need it we need it very much the great scenes and lessons of how to handle temptation are found in the sacred scriptures and ways in which this reality of being tested strengthens us you know sometimes they say if it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger well certainly temptation is testing that's what it means that we might be made stronger that we might be made more humble for that's the key thing in our life to be more humble realizing none of us is free from temptation if we think we are we're in deep trouble that's why bless me father for i have sinned is very helpful opening a line for confession we're all tempted by the very beginning of the of the bible in the the garden of eden genesis 3. we see it all played out before our eyes we should meditate upon that maybe especially during lent there we have the tempter as we have in the gospel today the tempter if the temperature doesn't look bad the temperature looks good actually the temper is charming we wouldn't give in to a temptation that was not charming and notice what is said in the book of genesis about whatever the fruit of the tree we don't know is an apple or what they always see the problem is not the apple and the tree it's the pear on the ground adam and eve man and woman there we are what's interesting that the way it goes is they saw the fruit that's offered to them they can have it all they've been given almost everything but not everything because they're not god and so they want it all they want to be god a temptation we all face day by day when we want to control everything including the people around us [Music] and there they see it and it was delicious to eat wow good that's and beautiful to look at and wonderful for the knowledge it gives and that's the way temptation works which the drive is probably more of the flesh or whatever our own desire for power or whatever it might be but we don't want to admit that so it's beautiful to look at that's more honorable and wonderful for the knowledge it gives this kind of way in which temptation works upon us [Music] is something that we need to be attentive to in our humility we need to be humbled and understand how vulnerable we are as i think augustine said our temptations and our small sins are like threads so thin we do not notice them until they become ropes so strong we can't really break them so we need to be well schooled and handling temptation and recognize that a thousand temptations do not make one sin the problem was not that man and woman adam and eve were drawn to what was offered to them total power the problem was that they said yes and they took it it's an act of the will and we need not give in to temptation we need to be tested by it be humbled by it to be drawn to greater holiness by the fact we struggle with temptation but not to be so stupid as to give in to temptation and we do we say lord forgive me and the lord jesus himself although he was not tempted could not be tempted by the sins within him because there were no sins within him he was like us on all things except sin for us is different when we've given into a temptation in any way pride anger envy whatever it's easier the next time the temptation is stronger so it's a struggle that's one of the things we face but the lord was like us of all things accepts him but he was tempted to and we see that in the gospel today here we see this great battle against the power of evil and we see this as the devil tempting him in the wilderness and he unlike man and woman in the garden of eden and unlike the people of israel in the desert where they were tempted to worship golden calfs and all kinds of things and gave in he showed us the way not to do so he showed us the way so we returned from the jordan after his baptism by the holy spirit led by the spirit into the wilderness that's important we need to be in the wilderness and we are in the wilderness lent is a kind of wilderness a testing time but we need to be tested and the devil said to me if you are the son of god oh what a wonderful piece of praise that is we can be always bewitched by the smooth approach command the stone to become a loaf of bread use your power to get rid of the hunger within you to take care of your drives and your passions and your needs that is the world the flesh that's the flesh and the lord said it is written man does not live by bread alone and so too we need not to reject the flesh but that's a heresy we are the word became flesh and told amongst us our humanity our bodies are resurrected it's glorious we're not to be like little ghosts floating along over bodies but we need to have a certain sense proportion and order so that our passions and the needs which are quite legitimate which make us real and the only time we don't have those passions is when we're dead and i hope we're not dead when we're still struggling with temptations it means we're alive and we can grow in virtue but we need to say lord help me to recognize we do not live by bread alone or by the appetites that call within us so strongly so we need to recognize those needs honor them but not let them take over our life and that's why in lent we have a time of fasting a time when we are to say no even to the good desires of the flesh so that we're not just simply slaves slaves that's not what we're called to be of all of our various desires even things that ourselves are good all sins ultimately come from something that is good it's just out of control fire we need fire to warm the house but we don't want fire to burn it down there's a big difference but you don't want it to go out either that's when you're dead and we don't want dead christians icy christians who never know what it's like who don't have enough passion to love or face the temptation not to so we ask the lord recognize that there are more things than bread alone and we asked the lord to help us have insight into that and then the devil led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world i will give you glory and authority and all that if you will worship me you will all be yours we are so tempted to worship false gods to worship we must worship god alone i am the lord your god we hear you shall worship the lord your god with heart and mind and soul and yet each of us we all worship false gods maybe not as slick as the devil all the little gods we worship that we make the creations of our own hand and imagination to false gods even if they're not evil they distract and absorb and consume our lives in the book of revelation in the end we have the great and glorious angel showing the mysteries of the future to saint john it is so marvelous that john bows down and worships the angel he gets it wrong he aims low even a glorious angel is aiming low and the angel says no no worship god get that straight and you're halfway home worship god damn madora worship god and everything else will follow from that get your head in order to know who is god and who is not worship god and 25 years ago when i was ordained a bishop i picked that as my motto as a bishop daya medora get that straight and the rest will follow and so lent is a time of prayer as well as fasting not only do we do not wish to become slaves of the things that contempt us and the bodily the passions things that nature but we need to worship god to know who is god and who are we what i am in the sight of god that i am indeed no more no less and every one of us is a child of god who must be respected with reverence worship god worship the lord your god and serve only him that's what the lord says and so in our times of prayer we get to be in touch with the lord god we see what god who god really is it's sort of almost like you know what this image is really not used by the father of the church but you know there's a the dominion time so you're gonna go beep beep beep you know you get the time oh you have those atomic clocks with a little signal comes out from somewhere and it sets everything in order so your little watch is right because it's in touch with the real one that's what we need to do worship god and spend time in prayer we won't be bedazzled and bewitched by false gods which we make so easily and then the devil took him to jerusalem and told him to just dive off the top of the temple every little cheer glory hallelujah look at that that's spectacular wow won't you be so glorious as it says in one of the musicals won't you walk across my swimming pool you know dazzle well when you get a religion that's dazzled there's something wrong the famous streets of avila they say you know i always tell this i love it she apparently was so close to god she sort of lift off when she prayed and somebody said i want to be a holy done like you oh i want to be like you and she said well first let's do the dishes and that's what we need to do and that's what almsgiving means doing the dishes it means quietly as it says in the throne of the mountain do not let your left hand right now know what that one another is doing don't blow the trumpet when you're giving alms or help of any kind just quietly do it do the dishes quietly without broadcasting it give don't be caught up in yourself give and then the temptation to be involved in a faith that is mostly glory glory for god but not glory for us that's not for us we are not god and so do not put the lord your god to the test and so we need to think of that as we begin the season of lent the temptation we have to be slaves of our own desires fasting helps in that fasting not necessarily from food like giving up candy or whatever nothing wrong with it but think something a bit deeper what is what enslaves me even a legitimate thing that enslaves me that absorbs my time too much let me not be a slave of that social media can come to mind perhaps you know those little machines are like vacuum cleaners of time our life disappears down that into that little screen and then what do we who is our god who do we really worship and we have our little false gods whatever they may be no worship god serve only him and learn that in prayer maybe the penitential psalms perhaps the stations will cross and certainly in the sacred reconciliation and then finally we do not want arousal dazzle faith with all kinds of glitter that's not it or show here i am being you know religious no we don't need applause we need to serve almighty god at the last supper washed dirty feet that's what it's all about but we have a struggle all the time and you know we're freed of our temptations 10 minutes after we're dead and even at the end it says well the devil had finished every test he departed from him until an opportune time we never get a break and jesus didn't either at the last supper the devil tempted judas who betrayed him and it was night and it's not a description of the clock it was night but we are called to live freely prayer fasting almost giving help us and that to recognize the temptations which are allowed to experience an opportunity to grow in humility and to grow in holiness let us now join together in our profession of faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen we should pour forth prayers at all times dear brothers and sisters but above all in these days of lent we ought to watch more intently with christ and direct our petitions more fervently to god for the whole christian people that in this sacred time they may be more abundantly nourished by every word that comes from the mouth of god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the whole world that in lasting tranquility and peace our days may truly become the acceptable time of grace and salvation we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the people of ukraine as violence and war spreads across their homeland that world leaders make focus on the good of all people by advancing peace rather than descending further into war we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for sinners and the neglectful that in this time of reconciliation they may return to christ we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the sick that they may be restored to health and hope through christ the healer especially gregory leslie we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who have died and who face the final judgment of god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer grant we pray o lord that your people may turn to you with all their heart so that whatever they dare to ask in fitting prayer they may receive by your mercy through christ our lord amen [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] blessed are you lord through your goodness the bread of life [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation forth for your goodness we receive the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands [Music] may god be pleased to receive us to accept the sacrifices pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father give us the right disposition so lord we pray to make these offerings to make these offer with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining forty long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the comedy of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ for the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate in these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] [Music] mysteriously [Music] [Music] therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished for the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint michael and with all the saints on his constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope mere unworthy servant the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion oh merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign
