sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the and may almighty god have we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one be you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father [Music] let us pray oh god who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true grant will you be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah thus says the lord cursed is the one who trusts in human beings who seeks his strength in flesh whose heart turns for away from the lord he is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season but stands in a lava waste a salt and empty earth blessed is the one who trusts in the lord whose hope is in the lord he is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream it fears not the heat when it comes its leaves stay green in the year of drought it shows no distress but still bears fruit the word of the lord blessed are they in thy lord [Music] happy indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor lingers in the way of sinners nor sits in the company of scorners but whose delight is the law of the lord and who ponders his lord day and night he is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters that yields its fruit into season and whose leaves shall never fade and all that he is shall prosper not so are the wicked not so for they like win or jeff shall be driven away by the wind for the lord guards the way of the just but the way of the wicked needs to do blessed [Music] uh a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters if christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some of among you say there is no resurrection of the dead if the dead are not raised neither has christ been raised and if christ has not been raised your faith is vain you are still in your sins and those who have fallen asleep in christ have perished if for this life only we have hoped in christ we are the most pitiable people of all but now christ has been raised from the dead the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep the word of the lord [Music] and we [Music] rejoice and be glad your reward will be great in the heavens [Music] we are [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke lord jesus came down with the twelve and stood on the stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all judea and jerusalem and the coastal regions of tyre and sidon and raising his eyes towards his disciples he said blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of god is yours blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied blessed are you who are now weeping for you will laugh blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult you and announce your name as evil on account of the son of man rejoice and leap for joy on that day behold your reward will be great in heaven for their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way but woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation woe to you who are now filled for you will be hungry woe to you who laugh now for you will grieve and weep woe to you when all speak well of you for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ many years ago when i started the work entered the workforce left school and started working a bunch of us were hired around the same time so we kind of compared our progress or lack thereof when we get together for lunch or after work we discuss how it's going and we noticed that it seemed like every once in a while one of us would be favored among the others in fact it happened so often we often joked about it who's the favorite one this week we use the term fair-haired boy or fair-haired girl we never knew why it happened we never knew how long it would last but it was sure nice to be favored because you got special attention got the good assignments got to go to lunch with the boss you didn't have to buy lunch for the boss so it was special and it was nice to be in that favored position and i wonder if god has any favorites when he looks out at us is any of us more special than any of the others in our readings today we hear the word blessed often we look up the definition of the word it says that one who's blessed is connected with god is appreciated welcomed fortunate is favored by god it's god's favorite when we're blessed by god so how do we become god's favorite well the readings give us some good clues in fact in the readings the word blessed appears many times if we replace that with other words such as i am god's favorite when i or i'm favored by god when i let's see what happens so in the first reading from jeremiah it says if we switch the words i am blessed by god when i trust in the lord and i hope in the lord i'm god's favorite when i trust in his son and hope in his son our lord jesus christ and jeremiah goes on to say when we do that if we do that we're like that tree it goes on to use the example of the tree that's growing and living and vibrant because its roots touch that living stream and saying when we touch the lord in that way we are alive and vibrant we don't have to fear the drought we don't have to fear the heat we still bear fruit even in difficult times when we're blessed when we're favored by the lord and likewise in our psalms psalm number one uses the same image of a tree says we are favored by the lord when we hope in the lord and our second reading gives us the reason why we should trust and hope in the lord it says jesus our lord has been raised from the dead he is the one he has been raised that's why it's appropriate to put our trust and our hope in him if we continue into the gospel we again see the word blessed many times so if we place that say we are god's favorite when we are poor when we are hungry we're favored by the lord when we are weeping when we are excluded insulted denounced because of the son of man when any of those happen when they happen to us we are favored by the lord now normally we think of those things as bad or we try to avoid them or they are difficult we struggle with them but in our gospel today jesus says when that happens to us that's when we're favored by the lord we're his favorite one we don't have to go looking for those things they'll find us sometime in their life maybe you're experiencing them right now it can be difficult and it can be challenging but our lord tells us those are the times when we have our special connection our special relationship with him at home in the cupboard we have this red plate it's a oversized red plate it has a big oversized red rim around it and on there are the letters you are special today and the idea of that plate is that on special days like birthdays whoever's celebrating that day gets to eat with that plate it reminds us all that on that day in particular we are special and i think god has a similar thing is maybe not a red plate but the same idea he wants to extend that to us in special situations on special days to remind us that we are favored by him so he extends that to us here at mass in the eucharist we eat bread the bread of life whether sacramentally or spiritually and in that moment that's one of those moments where we are special we are blessed by god and likewise as the readings tell us whenever we hope and trust in the lord whenever we are poor hungry weeping excluded insulted denounced in those moments at those times god wants to remind us that we are special we are favored we are blessed by god at that time on that day i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not to me consubstantial with the father through him all thanks for me for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge living in the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess my baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen our hope and trust above all is found in the lord with great confidence we bring to him all our needs for the church may those appointed in the church proclaim god's word be grace to do so with courage conviction and compassion let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the leaders of our nation may all who hold public office strive to promote life justice and peace working together for the common good let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for a greater respect for human life may god inspire and sustain our efforts to eliminate abortion and promote a culture of life across society let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the catholic services appeal may we seek to share christ's love with neighbors in need and support the catholic schools and other vital ministries within this archdiocese let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all athletes competing in the winter olympic games may healthy competition and good sportsmanship lead to greater bonds of human fraternity and mutual respect among nations let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those who have died may they be purified from their sins and share in the resurrection let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer father you bless those who are in distress and reward those who trust in you keep us always faithful in your service we make these prayers in faith and humility through christ our lord amen the cathedral parish is dependent upon the financial support of her cherished parishioners and many welcome guests there is a qr code in the parish bulletin from which to donate electronically you may also use any of the four stewardship drop boxes for your offering at the selby and dayton doors we thank you for your generosity uh so so so to so so pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church may this oblation o lord we pray cleanse and renew us and may it become for those who do your will the source of eternal reward through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lit them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks father of mercies and faithful god for you have given us jesus christ your son as our lord and redeemer he always showed compassion for children for the poor for the sick and for sinners and he became a neighbor to the oppressed and the afflicted by word and deed he announced to the world that you are our father and that you care for all your sons and daughters and so with all the saints we exalt and bless your name and sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] are full of your glory was united in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord you are indeed holy and to be glorified o god who love the human race and who always walk with us in the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst and we are gathered by his love and want and when as once for the disciples so now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the history of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore holy father as we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you led through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated on your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again and we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of blessing look with favor on the oblation of your church in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of christ that has been handed on to us and grant that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion bring your church o lord to perfect faith and charity together with francis our pope and bernard our bishop joseph his assistant with all bishops priests and deacons and the entire people you have made your own open our eyes to the needs of our brothers and sisters inspire in us words and actions to comfort those who labor and are burdened make us serve them truly after the example of christ and at his command and may your church stand as a living witness to truth and freedom to peace and justice that all people may be raised up to a new hope remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the peace of your christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever there in communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with the apostles and murders with saint paul and with all the saints we shall praise and exalt you through jesus christ your son through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not to temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins brown the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen and may the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on love of us you take away the sins of the world have mercy
