savior my spirit finds its joy in god the living god is my soul rejoices in god my savior my spirit finds its joy god [Music] a reading from the first letter of paul st paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters as a body is one though it has many parts and all the parts of the body though many are one body so also christ for in one spirit we were all baptized into one body whether jews or greeks slaves or free persons and we were all given to drink of one's spirit now the body is not a single part but many if a foot should say because i am not a hand i do not belong to the body it does not for this reason belong any less to the body or if an ear should say because i am not an eye i do not belong to the body it does not for this reason belong any less to the body if the whole body were an eye where would the hearing be if the whole body were hearing where would the sense of smell be but as it is god placed the parts each one of them in the body as he intended if they were all one part where would the body be but as it were as it is there are many parts yet one body the eye cannot say to the hand i do not need you nor again the head to the feet i do not need you indeed the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor and our less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety whereas our more presentable parts do not need this but god has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it so that there may be no division in the body but that the parts may have the same concern for one another if one part suffers all the parts suffer with it if one part is honored all the parts share its joy now you are christ's body and individually parts of it some people god has designated in the church to be first apostles second prophets third teachers then mighty deeds then gifts of healing assistance administration and varieties of tongues are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers do all work mighty deeds do all have gifts of healing do all speak in tongues do all interpret the word of the lord hallelujah [Music] of the lord let it be glory [Music] the lord be with you r [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to luke the angel gabriel was sent from god to a town of galilee called nazareth to a virgin betrothed to a man named joseph of the house of david and the virgin's name was mary and coming to her he said hail full of grace the lord is with you but she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be then the angel said to her do not be afraid mary for you have found favor with god behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you shall name him jesus he will be great and will be called son of the most high and the lord god will give him the throne of david his father and he will rule over the house of jacob forever and of his kingdom there will be no end but mary said to the angel how can this be since i have no relations with a man and the angel said to her in reply the holy spirit will come upon you and the power of the most high will overshadow you therefore the child to be born will be called holy the son of god and behold elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren for nothing will be impossible for god mary said behold i am the handmaid of the lord may it be done to me according to your word then the angel departed from her the gospel of the lord last week we began the first of three weeks of hearing from saint paul in this this particular portion of his first letter to the corinthians teaching us about the gifts of the holy spirit and our lesson last sunday was that each of us has been given spiritual gifts by god for the benefit of the community right not for ourselves but for the benefit of the community and we don't have god's perspective on everything right so we can't see the complete picture of how he has chosen in all the best ways to distribute his gifts and we don't have a full picture of all the fruits that come from the ways that he has distributed his gifts so this first lesson is perhaps a correction against any tendency we might have to i guess that the limited perspective we have can lead us to sometimes assume that things aren't distributed the right ways right so it's a correction against any tendency in us to think maybe several things that we've not been given any gifts or to overcome any tendency towards laziness or resistance or selfishness in discerning our gifts and then sharing them with others or to resist any tendency that can lead us to envy or comparing which might cause us to desire or disregard someone else's gifts so therefore saint paul reminds us that god is the one who gives all spiritual gifts and every gift is important to him so this weekend we continue with the second lesson and that's that is this this each gift is necessary for the whole community we heard the whole body of christ we are the body of christ each gift is necessary for the whole body to function correctly and to thrive but this weekend is also marion festival it's our annual celebration of our parish patronus mary queen of peace last night we welcomed bishop elisando for mass and i encourage you if you haven't if you weren't here last night if you didn't watch already i encourage you to watch it and listen to us homily on our youtube our parish youtube channel and in his homily he quoted he began really by quoting the angel gabriel's words to mary that we heard today's gospel nothing will be impossible for god and in terms of gifts it was it was through mary's fiat that's the latin word in the latin text of the of the gospel her yes let it be done to me it was her fiat that gave all of us the greatest gift possible right if we think about gifts that god gives us and so that's why we honor mary as a whole church as all of us as as as as a church honor mary but in particular um we're blessed to have her as our parish patroness and that we get to honor her so frequently throughout the year but especially during this special weekend and that's why we honor her because of the way that god's gifts have been given to us through her yes right her yes to god repaired the rupture between god and us and even more as bishop alsondo used this image of not only did the the rupture get repaired the bridge was was repaired and not not only repaired but widened that that bridge between god and humans between god and us was repaired and widened because through her yes god himself came into our world entered into our situation so to speak and through her yes becoming human he was able to redeem every human person who ever lived and who would ever live which means us as we live in the times after that through yes god revealed also what can be done in each person's life when we say yes to god even if we don't really know what that means right how's this going to work out she asked right she believed it would work out but she said how she said yes though and it shows what can be done in each person's life when we say yes even though we don't have god's full perspective and also not only can what we done in what in one person's life but what can be done for the world when one person says yes and in terms of gifts from god in today's lesson lesson about what's needed well we might be tempted you know we're focusing on mary and uh we might be tempted to say that the gifts that god gave to mary well they were more needed than other gifts might be tempted to say that right and particularly her gift that began with her conception we call that the immaculate conception we celebrate that when do we celebrate that december 8th so just last month her immaculate conception so we sometimes get confused the immaculate conception is not jesus's incarnation it's mary's conception right so the immaculate conception was the first gift god gave to mary she was conceived without the effects of original sin and we might think of that because we honor it as a dogma we celebrate as a feast day we celebrate her throughout the year right maybe her gifts are more needed than others right well certainly we recognize the needfulness of the gifts that god gave to her and we thank god and we thank her for what that gift did for all of us yet if we get kind of stuck on that word what's more needed then we're missing the point of both last week's lesson and this week's lesson there's no need to compare gifts right they're all freely given we can rejoice in all the gifts what is needed is to learn what mary did with god's gifts and how god used that to bring about our salvation none of us will be given that same gift that mary was given right in particular none of us is going to be given the gift of making jesus incarnate um the way that she did right making god flesh incarnate in the flesh into our world bringing jesus into our world in a very specific way as a mother of god that's a singular gift she was given however through the gifts that god has given us we do have the same opportunity not in the same way but the same opportunity to bring jesus into the world in a different way we also have the the opportunity to say yes in a way that is also needed in our own ways in our own times and last night bishop gave us a beautiful image of what mary did with god's gift to her again particularly that gift that beginning gift of the immaculate conception she received that gift and in return she gave god the gift throughout the rest of her life of remaining sinless remaining sinless in the face of temptation she was human she faced the same temptations throughout life that we all face so can we whatever ways that god has gifted us uh particularly giving beginning with the gift of baptism we've received or the gift of baptism we might be looking forward to we receive that gift that gift of faith and can we return a similar gift to god and to one another of doing our best to resist temptation towards sin as humans we're all tempted to sin including mary it's been that way since our first parents adam and eve they were tempted and chose to turn away from god and we'll also be tempted you know the seven deadly sins kind of give us all the categories right greed envy anger lust gluttony sloth pride will be tempted in specific ways like to gossip to hold on to resentments to not forgive attention to pornography or racism attempted to discarding people because they're inconvenient every time we face those temptations to sin we have a choice like mary of saying yes to bringing jesus into the world namely when we resist the temptation to sin well we are in a sense making jesus present through our actions right we're we're bringing a little more of jesus into the world every time we say yes to god and no to satan but thanks be to jesus and his sacrifice on the cross that when we do fail in our temptations well there's another gift offered to us the gift of mercy right so we have the opportunity to receive his gift of mercy to be forgiven of our sins and the sacrament of confession and then we have another way of bringing jesus into the world when we come out of that confessional we are experiencing a mini resurrection right a moment where we've overcome sin and death and been brought back to new life and once again we're bringing jesus in some small way and in a big way into our world my friends as as we heard from saint paul each gift is necessary for the whole community to thrive and he used that metaphor of the body to help us understand why you know it's kind of absurd when you hear it read or read it you know why would why would an ear complain to a no what was it the eye ear and the eye or the hand and the foot and why would they complain to each other or try to be the other or i don't want my ear to be an eye you know i don't want to be just one big eye either you know right to visualize that i don't want my nose to be my foot i don't want my nose that close to my foot after playing a soccer game either right so we want our the parts of our body to be in the right spots and when they're not then what do we do we go to a doctor and try to find a way to fix it or cure it or help it right it's the same for us we are the body of christ because of mary's yes god has become human and made us divine to share in his divinity the opportunity to become sharers in his divinity and he's made us all his body we are together the body of christ and we become we become that in our baptism we receive that gift of new birth and becoming members of the body of christ and after our baptism we continue to become more and more conformed to the body christ by receiving his body and the eucharist the eucharist doesn't become part of us like normal food we become part of the eucharist we become more of the eucharist when we receive that heavenly food and we become more like jesus through the eucharist but we become more like jesus we make jesus more and more present every time we say yes to god resisting temptation is sin and sharing every gift that god has deemed as important making that active and shared some way in the world there's also a paradox about the body of christ that st paul reveals in his letter which is that the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary or maybe we could say the ones that are more hidden are all the more necessary i mean we learn more and more about the body all the time but think about how hidden every blood cell every organ every tissue inside of us is and how necessary it is vital to the functioning of everything that we see right and it's this hidden part of the body that that is that are working all the time without us even being really aware of it until they're sort of maybe malfunctioning then we become aware of it right the same goes for us as part of the body of christ as important as the visible things we do for one another how much more important are the hidden things right the hidden ways that we pray for one another in ways that we resist the temptations to sin or things like the gossip or resentment unforgiveness those things that that that can be hidden in our thoughts or in our hearts resisting those things uh renouncing those things sending them to jesus to take care of right and how important are those hidden ways right the power of prayer is a spiritual gift that any of us can give to one another it's a gift that might be less visible or tangible or measurable but it's all the more necessary and we know we see that again in mary's life that we know the big moments of her life uh are shared with us in scripture and we meditate upon those and celebrate those but all those years bishop gave a percentage last night of all the years that were hidden for mary's life all the years that before she conceived jesus the years that she was with jesus those hidden years of prayer with god of talking with god himself and her son those private moments they're all preparing her and enabling her to be so strong in her faith and to say yes to god that's what enabled her to say yes to god so mary continues to give us that gift of her prayers her intercession for us protecting us her intercession is so powerful protecting us from from satan and his power encouraging us and pointing us to her son so we thank mary we thank mary we honor her for all that she did for us all she continues to do for us the way she helps us turn away from sin and temptation helps us turn back to her son more and more helps us in all our thoughts words and actions helps us in all the ways that we are encouraged to share our gifts with the world in both hidden and visible ways helps us to make jesus more and more present in our world and that's that's what that's what we all that's what the world needs right that's what's most needed nothing's impossible for god including the things he does through us right including the things he does to us nothing's impossible for god but every time that we choose to say yes to god and turn away from evil even we are able to make jesus more and more present in our world now we send forth our catechumens and candidates you've shared with us the word of god and you go forth to reflect more deeply on his word and we look forward as we send you forth with our blessings and prayers we look forward to the time when you will share with us fully at the lord's table [Music] i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us man and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen with the faith and trust modeled by mary the mother of god let us offer our prayers to god this day for the church that the witness of
