wisdom and the love you have revealed in your son jesus help us to be more like him in word and indeed for he lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the first book of samuel in those days samuel went down to the desert of zeth with three thousand men picked of israel to search for david in the desert of ziff so david and abishai went among soul soldiers by night and found soul lying asleep within the barricade with his spare thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him abishai whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp today let me nail him to the ground with one trust of despair i will not need a second and second thrust but david said to abishai do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david to despair and the water jug from their place at soul's head and they got away without anyone seeing or knowing or awakening all remain asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a roof on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of noah and the troops he said here is the king's spare let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my craps i will not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord [Music] the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind of merciful [Music] bless the lord o my soul and all my being bless his holy name bless the lord o my soul and forget not all his benefits [Music] he pardons all your iniquities here's he redeems your life from destruction grant you with kindness and compassion merciful and gracious is lord slow to anger and abounding in kindness not according to our sins does he deal with us nor does he requite us according to our crimes the lord is [Music] and gracious is the lord slow to anger and abounding in kindness not according to our sins does he deal with us nor does he requite us according to our crimes the lord is kind good mercer as far as the east is from the west so far has he put our transgressions from us as a father has compassion on his children so the lord has compassion on those who fear him the lord is [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthy one also the earthly and as is the heavenly one so also the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord [Music] [Music] [Music] i give you a new commandment servers the lord love one another [Music] my friends the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek or for the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies do good to them and lend expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you and this is the gospel of our lord praise you lord jesus christ thanks for joining us for this seventh sunday ordinary time moving swiftly as we are toward that season of preparation call lent and when we get ready for holy week and the great great mystery of the lord's suffering death and the glory of resurrection all coming soon right now we're still an ordinary time let's take a look at the readings what they have to say to us let's go first to samuel so let's get a sense of this okay we've got saul and david who at other times have been very close very loving to each other are now at odds one out to get the other and you have david slipping into the camp where saul is asleep now this is his mortal enemy at this point and he has an opportunity with a spear right at the head of king saul while saul sleeps to do his enemy in to put an end to his his uh conflict with saul because he can kill him and he has a great power there he can get away literally with killing his enemy but he walks away from that he says it's because he knows saul was anointed by the lord but he walks away also because he recognizes a truth that comes up time and time again in these readings the fact that we have power the fact that we have control the fact that we have more than other people does not give us the inherent right to use our power over and above others he had the power over life and death when it came to saul but he didn't use that power we see all around us so many examples of people who have power who misuse it badly and i think this reminder from the old testament is that if you've been given power with power comes the responsibility to use it wisely and well and with humility some modern day examples can mr putin and his armies probably take over all of ukraine i think so he said over a year ago if i wanted to be in kiev tomorrow i could do it with my troops and he's probably right russia is a mammoth power ukraine not so much but to do that would be and is wrong it's immoral this is a free democracy they don't choose to be part of russia russia has no right to take their right to exist independently mr putin has the power but he has no moral authority to do that what he's doing would be the misuse of power he has the power and he's not supposed to use it for evil purposes that's what he's considering doing oh mr z he's taken back hong kong already he's well on his way to trying to take back taiwan he has the power to do it certainly china is a strong military might but it would be wrong the people of hong kong would promise a level of democracy that he gave to them and now he longs to lie and take it back in the same way the people of taiwan are free people a democracy in a world where there's very little democracy and yet those free people he looks to swallow up can he do it militarily does he have the power to do it absolutely does he have the moral authority to do it absolutely not what david did was realize i've got a power here to take saul out but i don't have the right to use that power i wish that mr putin and mr z and all the totali and despots of the world would recognize that the fact that they have power doesn't mean they have the right to abuse that power and how about your life and mine you know don't we in so many ways have to examine how we treat our privileged role let me ask you something when was the last time you truly looked in the face of the people who mowed your lawn was the last time you took a look at the people who serve you in a restaurant when's the last time you noticed that the guy or gal who clears your table the the people who support the waiter staff you ever notice their face ever notice anything about their eyes when was the last time any of us gave serious thought to the responsibility we share for all the abuses of power that take place in our society on a personal level when we ignore people because they're only working for us they're just of the servant class and those times too when even in the church we have thought that because we're the church we have the power to in some ways say that our sins are not as serious as the sins of others and in fact the police and firefighters every major powerful organization goes through the same struggle the fact that we exist in a privileged position and a priesthood the priesthood is certainly a privileged position does not give us the right to lord it over others does not give us the right to be the hypocrites the the phonies that jesus condemns in the gospel we are called on by virtue of the gift that we're given if we are in a position of authority or power to use it with kindness and humility and to notice the people around us we at times act as if there's so much below us and yet they are equal children of god i asked you about that because i'm always amazed that if you really really look at your life of mine so often there are all sorts of people who populate our lives we treat as second or third class citizens but in god's eyes they're equal to you or me you have a privileged position so do i with that comes the responsibility to use our privilege and our power with compassion and humility and right judgment david did that in this story today he could have taken saul out but he doesn't because he knew i don't have the authority the moral right to take this man's life how about yourself i know i have to ask myself all the time do i see myself as so privileged so powerful that i have the right to lord it over anyone else and then god willing with the right spirit of humility we recognize but there for the grace of god go you or me okay let's go to that second reading of saint paul look we've got two relatives he speaks about in this reading one is adam and the other is jesus now we all share an identity and a family connection to adam he's the first man we share his humanity with that comes as you know the inclination to sin and to take the wonderful gifts that god's given us for granted and to do really dumb things sometimes because we think we know better than god and so in some ways adam has taken our humanity and lowered the bar thank god we also have another relative his name is jesus when god becomes man when god becomes one of us he elevates our whole humanity the whole neighborhood goes up in style and in privilege and giftedness because we share our identity with the savior of the world have you ever known anybody who had in their family somebody famous or somebody who would achieve something good or something important and kind i saw recently uh the relatives of dorothy day being interviewed now she was a saint no doubt about it whether the church makes it one or not she worked with the poor she did amazing things a great social activist for good and just causes and it was interesting to see you know her granddaughter speak about her with such pride and delight she's delighted to be connected to dorothy day well if she's delighted to be connected to dorothy day who is a great woman shouldn't we then in turn see our humanity as an amazing opportunity to be elevated we share an identity we share our humanity with jesus himself you know yeah we're part adam we are that weak foolish arrogant human being who sometimes chooses wrongly but we're also hugely wonderfully intimately connected to christ himself and so what it does is elevate our humanity and make us hopefully say i better be better than i am because you know i've got a really important relative the savior of the world and just as i'm very very close to jesus and he's part of the family as i'm part of his family as part of the family i don't want to shame or embarrass him by diminishing the great power and giftedness that comes from being a human being who shares family identity with the savior of the world okay let's go to the gospel this is not an easy gospel you know i guess in a nutshell you could say it's really the golden rule uh in greater detail do unto others as you would have them do unto you but if somebody said to me as people do sometimes well what exactly do catholic christians believe we believe what jesus tells us is the way we should live and how is that and then he gets specific in this and it's not easy catch some of the phrases here see if they apply to you because when i i look at them you know i write in my scripture text all the time after i finish reading this i wrote in big letters yikes this is too much this is awesome listen to what he says love your enemies do good to those who hate you not those who are ambivalent about you they hate you actively you got to love them bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you you have been abused by anyone verbally emotionally physically sexually and you're supposed to pray for those people how in the world is that possible for if you love those who love you what credit is out to you even sinners love those who love them love your enemies do good to them lend expecting nothing in return stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned how many of us aren't overtime judging and condemning other people while not realizing that we're setting ourselves up for a fall because as he says the measure with which you measure others will be the measure returned unto you look you know and i know that we talk to god we say the same thing oh lord please give me this give me that if you can take this problem away and help me out here and there we want so much from god can you imagine if he says to you or me hey jim listen i'm going to treat you exactly like you treat others oh god don't do that you know please give me a bigger break than that we want god to overlook all of our faults and sins and love us no matter what but when it comes to the way we treat others we think we have the right to treat others with disrespect and a lack of love and not to pray for those who hate us and not to forgive those who hurt us but he's saying don't you get it in the judgment you and i will be judged by the same way we have judged others i don't know about you but for me that could be really really dangerous because i've spent a lot of my life not forgiving those who hurt me lending to those whom i expect to be repaid by doing good for others so that others will notice and not loving those who hate me at all but quite frankly sometimes returning the hate to them i could be in big trouble you too unless we recognize the last line of the gospel he says hey jim i'm going to judge you the way you judge others and between now and when i meet the lord in heaven i hope i hope that i can change the direction of my life and try to take seriously the commands of this gospel not just to love people who love me but to love people who can't stand me and not to judge and not to condemn but rather to try to be as good to others as the lord i want to be good to me and unless we do that he's saying to us this gospel you know you got to read it read it again because it's a real challenge to whether or not we are in any way shape or form truly catholic christians who follow jesus of nazareth is it just a nice idea i love jesus he's a man of peace and love he's also a man who calls us to change the direction of our lives so that when we meet him he doesn't say jim i'm going to judge you the same way you handled and judged everybody else but rather welcome jim i gave you the warning shot and you used that as an opportunity to redirect your life so you took seriously the command of my gospel to love one another and to demand of yourself the same thing you demand of others the golden rule made real final thought not necessarily scriptural but something that applies to all of us i'm going through a a lot of pictures lately you know trying to get things in order and we all do that right we have a thousand or more pictures at home well i came upon this picture i want to share with you now this is obviously a birthday party i think for my nephew anthony and here's a picture of me and anthony and julia and my nephew matthew so my two nephews and my my niece julia now they're obviously very very young they are now 37 32 and 30. but when i looked at this picture it seems to me they looked like this and we had this fun together yesterday my point is do you realize how fast it goes do you recognize that one day their children and the next day they're adults hopefully loving and caring for their dear old uncle my point is simply this if you have things you need to fix get to it now if you have people you need to forgive try to do it soon if you owe people for the kindnesses of the past try to pay back the kindnesses not someday down the line but this moment if you have to fix things and bridge the gap if you haven't communicated well with people you love you put it off this is the time to do it if you've considered taking care of your physical or emotional needs but down the line recognize time is fleeting life is brief these kids are now grown and it seems like only yesterday their uncle was in his 30s playing with these kids who are no longer kids and the uncle is certainly no longer in his 30s the time to fix the things in our life that need fixing the time is now the time to heal the breach is now the time to express the love and the need for forgiveness is now and i think you and i so often act as if we've got all the time in the world and you know one of the good things about being a priest and i think all my brother priests can relate to this almost every week of our lives we celebrate wakes or funerals and we get to see up close and personal people who pass from this life to the next and it's a reminder the journey of life is short the time to fix the things that need to be fixed is today the time to heal the broken is now not someday not down the line not manana but now if you have your entire life in order good for you but if you're like me and most of us and you know there are things that need to be fixed now is the appropriate time to do that not someday but today i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified he has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen with confidence in the goodness of god let's offer our prayers a through your goodness we have this bread to offer which earth has given and human hands have made it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever by the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this wine to offer fruit of the vine work of human hands it will become for us our spiritual drink blessed be god forever lord god we ask you to receive us and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you with humble and contrite hearts lord wash away my iniquity cleanse me from all of my sin pray my brothers and sisters that our sacrifice will be found acceptable to god our heavenly father may the lord accept the sacrifice of our parents to the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his church lord as we make this offering may our worship in spirit and truth bring us one day to eternal salvation and we ask all this in the name of jesus the lord amen [Applause] my friends the lord be with you with your spirit lift up your hearts lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god father all-powerful and ever-living god we dwell always and everywhere to give you thanks and praise you never cease to call us to a new and more abundant life god of love and mercy are always ready to forgive we know we are sinners and yet you invite us to trust in your mercy time and time again we broke your covenant but you never abandon us instead through your son jesus our lord you bind yourself even more closely to human family by a bomb that can never be broken and so in wonder and with gratitude we join our voices with the choirs of heaven to proclaim the power of your love and to sing of our salvation in [Music] of christ heaven and earth are full of your glory as one are in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of our lord a son i in the highest of sun i in [Laughter] god of power and might we praise you through your son who comes in your name he is the word that brings salvation he is the hand you stretch out to us who are sinners he is the way that leads to your peace god our heavenly father we've often wandered far from you but through your son jesus you have brought us back you gave him up to death so that we might turn again to you and find our way in love to one another therefore we celebrate the love and reconciliation christ has gained for us and we ask you father to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine by the power of your holy spirit so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ while he was at sephiroth the night before he died for us jesus took bread in his sacred hands and gave you father thanks and praise he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] when supper was ended jesus took a chalice filled with the fruit of the vine again father he thanked you for your goodness gave the chalice to his disciples and friends and he said take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and everlasting covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] let us proclaim the mystery of our faith [Music] when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death oh lord until you come again lord our god your son has entrusted to us this pledge of his love we celebrate the memory of his death and resurrection and we bring you the gift you've given to us this sacrifice of love and reconciliation therefore we ask you father to accept us together with your son fill us with his spirit through our sharing in this meal and may he take away all that divides us may the same spirit keep us in communion of mind and heart with francis our pope with john our bishop along with all the bishops the clergy the religious and all of god's people father make your church throughout the world a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace you've gathered us here today around the table of your son in fellowship with mary the virgin mother of god with saint joseph her devoted spouse and all the saints in that new world where the fullness of your peace will be revealed gather people of every race every language every way of life to share in the one eternal banquet with jesus christ who is our risen and our loving lord through him with him in him in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours almighty father for ever and ever ah [Music] [Music] remember that gospel we were talking about not easy to live basically do unto others as you would have them do unto you the measure with which you measure others will be measured back to you tough gospel i want to be worthy of the call of christ to say i'm truly his disciple by if not completely being up to that challenge doing a little better maybe you do too in that hope that we can be better people that we can love others even those who don't love us a little bit better let's pray the prayer that he taught us our father who art of heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord from every evil and grant us peace in our day in your mercy keep us free from sin protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said to your apostles i leave you my peace my peace i give to you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live and reign one god forever and ever amen may the peace of the lord be with you always [Music] of god you take away the sins of the world of mercy on us [Music] god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] love of god you take away the sins of the world [Music] lord jesus christ with faith in your love and mercy we eat your body and drink your blood let it not bring us condemnation but health in mind and in body my friends behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those who are called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed may the body and blood of christ bring us all to share in everlasting life our spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen so so what's interesting is that around our country at least many of the mandates have been loosened and people are not being told to wear their mask and to take other steps that we used to take to fight the pandemic but the reality is that it's not going away and so we have to be continuously sensitive not just to our own health but to the health of those around us maybe you've gotten through uh covert and no big deal just like a cold people tell me but maybe you give it to someone over 65 and it might very well cost them their life we are still responsible for our brothers and sisters and so we are to take every necessary step to make sure that we are being as careful as possible and yes to get our booster shots and yes to get our vaccinations and yes if we're in a crowd perhaps to wear a mask and yes to constantly sanitize our hands and if we're going to call for sneeze to do it in a way that does not share what's inside us with people around us you know i i think of uh this is a great opportunity to be a true christian to care about others as much we care about ourselves by being mindful that while cobra may not do anything terrible to you it may ruin someone else's life and health and who wants that responsibility not me and i hope not you so let's continue to be fastidious about being careful not to spread the pandemic virus okay then the other thing i wanted to mention was just that we're getting as i mentioned in the homily closer and closer to lynn before we even get there before ash wednesday happens before you have your mardi gras celebration could you think seriously about making this lent a time of rebirth we've been through some of the worst years with the pandemic now let's not just come back as a nation or as a world but also as a spiritual people by saying i'm going to use lent 2022 is an opportunity to get closer to god and got into god's people i'm going to really really do more to activate my faith what a great thing this upcoming lent could be and wouldn't easter have that much more meaning i'm hoping god willing that we don't have any more spikes in the pandemic and that this easter sunday once again our churches are going to be packed with people who say i'm home and i'm glad to be home and there's no better way to prepare for that holy week and easter than by using lent appropriately and doing the things we always mean to do and then as always i want to give a pitch for watching personally speaking with
