now open for lenten small groups please register on our website or contact michaela at the parish office for any questions please enjoy this short video about lenten small groups i remember it well it was november 17th a powerful storm with hurricane-force winds hit the pacific northwest the weather was some of those the worst storms we had seen trees were blown over and power lines cut leaving hundreds of thousands of people in the dark that there was a major line of thunderstorms trees took down power lines blocked roads and damaged houses loads of rain buckets of rain and by the way take a look at these five-day rain totals because that's our house to me seemed like a wounded friend [Music] the first thing when i saw the house i was pretty devastated 120 foot uh douglas fir tree had crashed just uprooted and crashed right next to the chimney through the second story of the house we ran up the steps and it was a huge mess demolished our our bedroom and closet and bathroom pretty completely one of our walls was like at a 45 degree angle where the the tree had just like bent the entire wall to the side and then i immediately thought of my small group because my small group is always there whenever we need them we have an electrician in our group and he came over and he walked through and he let us know if it was safe to be there and he turned off the circuits that were not safe then we had a group of the guys from the small group come over and go into the areas that were dangerous to be standing in and actually pull out all of our possessions out of the closet when we had a cleanup day there they came with the chainsaws and brakes and helped to clean up the tree and they provided meals for us they invited us over to their homes they helped us move back in they prayed for us they gave us their very best like stan when he came to fix the um to help clean up from the tree stan brought his leaf blower and he blew the grass just clean and beautiful more than it ever usually is sorry but um and when the ladies did the laundry they folded it like impeccably and we're thinking oh i have to learn how to fold laundry like this and they said we don't do this for our own families every week we just did it for you you know before i had a had joined a small group with diane i it was uh we basically did not know a lot of people very closely here at st michaels and through the small group we really gained a group of friends that that we can really rely on and we can we can really talk in a deeper way with our faith and about troubles we may have and i try to pretty much fix everything myself and uh and this time it was just too big for me and really that's that's one thing this really taught me is that we have friends that can help us out we had a physical tree come crashing through our house our small group said the tree crashed through all of our lives not just yours i know that we were not meant to live our lives alone and i think a small group brings the body of christ right into your living room so when you do have a storm in your life you have people around you supporting [Music] you please stand and greet those around you as you prepare from us [Music] bless the lord my soul name bless the lord my soul who leads me [Music] the lord my soul [Music] lord my soul bless the lord bless the lord [Music] forgiveness [Music] bless the lord my soul is [Music] bless the lord [Music] in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit of our lord jesus christ the love of god the fellowship of the holy spirit be with you all right and with your spirit my brothers and sisters to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mystery let us call to my our sins and ask the lord for pardon and strength i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what have done what i failed to do through my fault through my fault to my most grievous fault therefore us blessed marry our virgin all the angels had saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth glory to god in the [Music] highest churches [Music] [Music] we give you thanks practice [Music] oh [Applause] lord jesus christ [Music] son of the father you take away the sins of the have mercy on us have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer receive our prayers [Music] have mercy on us [Music] glorious [Music] jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god [Music] let us pray when we pray almighty god that always pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you to our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zif with three thousand pikmin of israel to search for david in the desert of zif so david and abhishei went among saul's soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him abhishai whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abhishei do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of nur and the troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i would not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord r [Music] the lord is kind and merciful merciful is the lord the lord is [Music] mercy for is the lord bless the lord o my soul and all my being bless his holy name bless the lord o my soul forgot not all is [Music] is the lord he pardons all your iniquities he heals all your ears he redeems your life from destruction and crowned you with kindness and compassion [Music] the lord the lord secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed he has made known his ways to moses and his deeds to the children of israel [Music] merciful and gracious the lord slow to anger and abounding in kindness for as the heavens are high above the earth so surpassing is his kindness towards those who fear him [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not the first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly and as is the heavenly one so also are the heavenly just as we have been born the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord hallelujah [Music] you [Music] i give you a new commandment as the lord love one another as i have loved your [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke lord jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others that you would have them do to you but if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies and do good to them and land expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high but he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked we merciful as just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop commanding and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lab for the measure with which you measure will in return we measure out to you the gospel of the lord r jesus christ i would like to introduce myself my name is father anthony nguyen i'm a redemptive missionary my main ministry is doing the retreat ministry in tucson arizona to redemption we have a retreat house in that area but this morning i'm here on behalf of the unbound to invite you to become sponsor for the poor children and aging people who live in the 28 countries in which the unbow is involved out and this morning any one of you any one of you want to trace my accent i was born in vietnam and grew up in orange county california so you will listen to me preaching in english mixed with perfect vietnamese and californian accent my brothers and sisters this week we continue to be drawn deeper in our understanding of jesus statement on the gospel of last sunday who are those blessed in the eyes of god beside the poor the hungry the weeping and to be being persecuted for their faith in today's gospel jesus blessed those who keep god's law with a radical commitment and apply them into every aspect of their lives the radical commitment to the law is seen in today's gospel when jesus challenges his disciples to bigger issues to authentic love and justice he command his disciple to practice the lord of justice with a merciful and generous heart he commands his disciples to love unconditionally and beyond boundary they should love even their enemies and persecutors can you imagine when the jews were asked to love the roman army who came to invade taken that their lands desecrated their signage humiliated their leaders and taxed their property all can you imagine if jesus was with us this morning and asked us to love the gossipers who intentionally destroyed our reputations and to love those whom we do not want to have any associate with how would we respond to his commands jesus left us no choice in regard to practice the laws of love and justice he insists that each one of us should imitate his father in loving everyone righteous or sinners bad are good they are all our brothers and sisters only unconditional love can make us be different so today when we come up to receive the eucharist let's ask our lord jesus christ to grant us the grace to love the unlovable to forgive the unforgivable and to pray for the less well-liked but today i also invite you to show your love to those who struggle from poverty because of social discrimination and disorder in their country those who work real hard in their lives but never have enough money to support their families especially for your chi for their children to go to school i have to i would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you the work of the unbound the unbiased was found in 1981 by a group of lay catholics who live in kansas city kansas with their great efforts and commitments during the last 40 years they have provide basic necessities like food education clothing and medical care for more than 260 thousand children youth and aging people who live in those country because of the world condition because of the violence into societies and also because of the lack knowledge in technology many families who live in those country are in poverty even though they work real hard in their lives i have the picture of lauren a nine-year-old girl who was born in philippines the parents the mother is the housewife and the parent is the tri-cycle uh taxi driver but especially during the tr raining season he didn't have not many customers so struggling to have enough finance to support the family especially for the children to go to school this is the reason why i'm here on behalf of the unbound to ask you to think about the children in those countries who who suffer severely from the poverty and we would like to ask you to give more than uh dollar a day which means forty dollars a month and only for at least four years because during this this the year you will receive the letter directly written directly from the children sent to you in other words just like not going to give the money and no nothing to happen to the money but actually you will receive the children as your grandchildren or your children in your families 10 years ago i had opportunity to go to costa rica to visit different places with the other priests the first place we went to visit was an orphanage and this one is very special because of the children there were born with severe disability when i talk about severe disability i meant when i came close the bed and i heard the screaming from the boy but i couldn't see the face of the boy because the place is between his chest and his hand and another boy you can see the legs going up and down like this every second in his life the story was during the pregnancy many young mother discovered that future baby will be born with severe disability so many of them thought about having abortions and the group of the religious sisters promised the mother will take care of the children until they die so many of them changed their mind and gave birth and the doctor the local doctor examined the children and told the mother superior that some of them may maybe live only from six months to a year but when we came to visit the mother superior show us a group of children they still alive in the teenager and the mother superior believe that the miracle happened every day to the love and care of the caregiver to the children and also the children to the caregiver another story when i gave the mission in the northern part of country in vietnam a very poor village and i noticed a day one day i noticed a boy he always there from the morning until the evening and he came out and asked him do you have to go home to eat lunch and he told me father at my house there's only one meal in the evening when my mother came back from the public market so i came to visit the family and i found out that the father passed away during the vietnam war and the government gave them a tiny piece of land to grow the vegetable to in order to sell it in the public market and the mother told me that father sometimes i afraid to come home because i didn't have enough food and have enough food or having have food to feed my children especially when i didn't sell anything during the rainy season and thing that i believe that the children in our world some of them don't have enough food to eat in their life and knowing that children over there loved candies so i asked the boy what kind of candy do you like and he told me father if you have money buy the chewing gum i will love the chewing gum here i bought some for them at that time but the second time when i came back for the missions i went to costco and bought different about 50 pounds of different candies to bring home i basically have the chewing gum for them ran into the same boy and i asked him do you enjoy the candy apart from america and he told me with the big eyes and he told he said that father those candies smell so good i put them under my pillowcase so my pillows okay smell good before i eat each one of them so when i heard about this i was really being touched because only poor children this is kind of thing in their life and sharing this story not encourage you to go to costco and buy candy to give the poor that's not my point my point is with your dollar a day my brothers and sisters it's like the sweetness of those candy bring to the heart into the soul into the life of the children because they don't know why far far away there are people who don't know them at all but really care for them and give them a chance give them a hope that one day they can step out of their poverty and become a good citizen and also be good become a good catholics in canton in their countries on behalf of the children in mexico in guatemala in peru in honduras colombia ecuador in el salvador in costa rica in kenya in madagascar dominic republic in india in haiti in philippines and many more countries i'm very grateful for your prayer for the poor today but also for your generosity when you decide to become the sponsor for the poor children in the festival we have the different photos like this please spend a little time after math and become sponsored there is a form for you to fill out and give it back to the volunteer and to me if you decide to become a sponsor may god bless you and for may god bless your generosity today one god the father make a heavenly prayer indivisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god right from light truth consubstantial to the father through himself in accordance with our scriptures he is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again glory to judge the living entertainer and his kingdom will happen i believe in the holy spirit the lord who proceeds from the father and the son but with the father and my son who is a lord and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostle church i can grasp upon baptism for the forgiveness i look forward to the rest of our civility and the life of the world amen trusting in our lord who always love the children and hear the prayer let us offer the petition praying for our holy church for our parish community and also for ourselves for this local church that each of us may live the unconditional love and joy of the gospel we pray lord hear our prayer for peace that god will guide world leaders to end nuclear war and use their resources to end famine disease and oppression we pray lord hear our prayer for all those who are alienated from the church that god will heal their hearts and help them to find welcome and acceptance in our communities we pray for all who are sick or suffering in any way may the lord send his healing spirit upon them to bring them comfort and consolation we pray lord hear our prayer and for all who have the father be merciful as the father be merciful as the father be merciful as the father give thanks to the father for he is good eat [Music] he created the world with wisdom eternal [Music] he leads his people throughout history [Music] he pardons and welcomes his children eternal his forever [Music] as we receive from him let us also give to him he open to is [Music] merciful as the father be merciful as the father be merciful [Music] pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god to almighty father may the lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we celebrate your mysteries oh lord with the observance that is your due we humbly ask you that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may prohibit us for salvation through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts and let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right it is our duty in our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for although you have no need of our praise yet our thanksgiving itself your gift sing our praises and nothing to your greatness but profit us for salvation to christ our lord amen and so in company with the choirs of angels we praise you with joy and we proclaim [Music] me [Music] the name of the lord [Music] out of all holiness make holy therefore this gift we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the new fall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and wants more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many of forgiveness of sin do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] right [Music] until [Music] therefore we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have helped us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope our bishop and all the clergy and your holy people remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god we blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be go heir to eternal life and may praise and glorify you to your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior command and probably by teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive those our trespasses and we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from
