[Music] [Applause] [Music] 2003 would Mark the 83rd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the rally only seems to be gaining in popularity Sturgis consistently attracts about a half a million visitors from all over the world every year to South Dakota before I experienced Sturgis for myself I often ask myself what exactly the draw was was it the location was it the roads was it the camaraderie among bikers was it the famous biker bars was it the roads to ride I've always heard kind of a combination of all these things but after spending a week in stur just South Dakota I've come to one conclusion I think the main draw the key ingredient that brings people back every single year for 83 years is the incredible riding around the whole sturis area there are so many epic rides to do and on our very first full day of hitting Sturges there's only one place I wanted to go the Black Hills just in the Black Hills national forest alone you have some of the best motorcycle roads that I've ever been on there are no straight roads every single road is a curve road conditions are spectacular perfect pavement trees reach to the sky everywhere you turn you're going through a Rock Tunnel or a mountain pass of some sort very little car traffic anywhere the weather changing at a snap of the finger there's always an adventure around the corner the rivers the Lakes the streams I'm pretty confident that when God was creating the world he built this slice of South Dakota specifically for motorcycle riders hello how are you I'm living on the moon I'm calling from a telephone inside of us the only other person here left many years ago and now I sit here at the bar feeling so [Music] alone good morning guys day three on the road to Sturgis right now we are in Grand be Colorado some of you may be asking where is that I didn't I never heard of it we basically just picked a random city on the map uh which is kind of fun to do sometimes we were planning on going into Denver but then everybody said why go into a city with a bunch of traffic and everything I said you know good point so let's go like up to this mountainous town in grany and it turns out this is kind of like a ski resort town you know a lot of people that stay here in the winter do so for the purposes of skiing and snowboarding place is pretty cool we got in pretty late last night we're going to go up through like Cheyenne area uh we got about 350 Mi or something like that today to head into sturis so it shouldn't be too much of a grind yesterday we did just shy of 600 Mi ended up getting in 10 11:00 last night so um yeah the weather feels perfect now U I'm glad we're out of the heat now so it should be a good day yeah we got uh everybody here with the exception of a a few people that will ultimately meet up with us yeah looking forward to it this is the Silver Creek Lodge again sometimes I have no idea what to expect when I book these places but but yeah totally a ski lodge here really old though I feel like this place is built like 30 40 years ago or something get's ready not really take it down right there all right how we feeling this morning boys feel good feeling strong nice went to bed kind of like hurting you know BR up refreshed nice most it was a grind yeah get the buggies off and all the dirt from that dirt road getting a little breakfast dude did you guys eat no they don't have a restaurant in there tables and stuff at the restaurant I guess that's like a fancy smancy restaurant or something that they only have like yeah at night starting off on day three and the final push into stures South Dakota so we would start off in Granby of course we'd head north on the 125 through Colorado Colorado has some amazing riding by the way I definitely need to come back here and check out more of this state beautiful open roads we drop off here in Walden Colorado for a little bit of a gas stop continue on the 125 make a ride on this 127 cross over the Border here into Wyoming Wyoming has just beautiful open Plains roads and everything we'd go through here through Harmony we drop off off here in laramy for a quick bite to eat a little mom and pop diner really cool just a lot of Open Country out here in Wyoming just tons of wide open space as far as the eyes can see yeah it's beautiful out here I've read all of the books I had and walk the planet round but still a thing I'm looking for refuses to be found except this clanging deep Gra oh I am such a fool a man who wanted quiet so he went up to Mo but now this precious Solitude I want thought so Sublime has changed my sense of what is real and what is in my mind I think I hear the voices of my distant family a laughter of my oldest friends for years I haven't seen I know that that's impossible I tell myself each day but no one stops those growing sound they will not go away but no one comes here for me which worth my own crew is I there's nothing left but just dreams and memories and [Music] time hello how are you I heard you're on the moon tell us why you went up up there it's very strange of you now we all know that you're the kind of person who must find the things that keep you up at night occupy your mind tell me do you think that you can do it all alone the handsome of else you wouldn't even why don't stopping up for first gas stop for the day we're in Walden the road that we took from Grand B to Walden was epic super awesome Canyon pass we went up over then we went through some like Wide Open Fields Colorado is beautiful we're about to get out of Colorado though and head into Wyoming yeah this is a great riding up here for sure I would agree uh dude I was catching so many rocks on that road though just spitting up in my shins I'd watch them go they get a lot of snow so I imagine they like salt it plow it a lot so it's it's probably just tore up from the season you know up man how's it going huge fan of the YouTube channel oh thank you sir appreciate it man thank you you guys headed to sergis no we're not oh okay we just came up for color to Colorado for 8 [Music] days [Music] [Music] w [Music] we're in Wyoming now lar Wyoming yeah just a lot of wide open country roads out here we've dropped in elevation so it's like 90° now like every road out here is just pretty beautiful this is like the epitome of like Grand American touring out here for sure no sign or what there was no sign dude there might have been like those small little green ones but like the the Wyoming side was like non-existent maybe maybe they are not that proud of this state but they should be there should be as we are in Wyoming now right yeah yeah I mean no no we passed the state line GPS but there's no sign yeah we were supposed to stop off by the Wyoming sign welcome to Wyoming but we never saw it so we just assumed it was taken out or whatevering you can be proud of the state put up a bigger sign for us I guess we'll have some more opportunities to get pictures by the signs definitely and I are outside eating and all I feel like these like Pricks in my arm or my shoulder like a really like sharp like Sting I asked Stephan I was like hey dude is there did I get stung or something and he didn't see anything but then last night I checked it out I don't know if you can see it oh yeah we can see it look at that it's hard to see could you maybe take your shirt off that's we that for the pool party Saturday okay but yeah man like I look I I I wiped it like that and then I think I hit it on the floor this just big old like multicolored wasping on the ground so hopefully I don't die or [Music] something [Music] [Music] [Music] here at the Western sky Family Diner here in Wheatland Wheatland Colorado here the new Sunday hours open till 8:00 p.m. Wyoming Wyoming Wyoming not Colorado Wyoming oh God Wyoming I forgot you know we we cross borders there's no sign there's no sign to see so there's no way for us to know but clearly W yeah I have a good excuse I'd say just filled up at the Western Sky Diner pretty good stuff headed up now to Lusk I think is the name of the town that might be our last stop before Sturges so on the home stretch here here got some gas in wheatlands took this 25 North to the 26 and then in gy made a left on this 270 wide open Wyoming beautiful landscapes weather was great jump up into Manville make a right into Lusk Lusk is kind of a cool like little historic town a lot of brick buildings and things like that we got some gas and some protein bars there and Lusk and then headed north from there then coming out of Lusk North here on this 18 wide open Plains area we got some really cool drone shots bunch of cows out here and everything just the epitome of like open Countryside this Road's right here on the border between South Dakota and Wyoming take this 85 all the way up into Newcastle once we hit around this 85 area we saw a lot of storms coming in and everything we were hoping to kind of Dodge them we hit a couple different rain clouds uh one of them had a bunch of hail in there a bunch of rain we made it into Newcastle and from Newcastle that was kind of our final push at that point into sturis we crossed over the border right here between Wyoming and South Dakota entered into the Black Hills forest right as you jump into this National Forest the roads kind of change they almost have like this black tinge to them the storms were coming in we didn't get too much rain water at that point we just had a bunch of like lightning showers and things like that which is pretty cool made our way into Deadwood and that would be our final destination to spend the rest of the week in sturis right now you're fade into the dark right now you lost your Every Spark right now you struggle to let go right now pain is all you know call on me I'll hold you when you cry call on me I'll get you through to the other side call me I help you ease your Fai and if you only knew that I'm ready for you just call on [Music] me l your weary head and get some rest power men what's broken in when you get out into the middle of Wyoming you discover real quickly that there's just a lot of wide open space without a whole lot of people around in fact Wyoming is the least populated state in the US with only a little over 500,000 people so we decided to stop off by the side of the road for a minute visit with the livestock and get some shots of the wide openen Wyoming plane TI yeah move moo moo come back I just want to love you come to me I'll [Music] you I hold you when you cry call on me I'll get you through to the other side call on me I'll help you e your Fain and if you want to KN then I'm ready for you oh to help you through all you have to do is call on cool little small town it's kind of fun to see all the bikes rolling through but bunch of people either going to Sturgis or we actually talked to a lot of people that were just out riding you know we're asking everybody hey you going to sturis and people are like no I'm just out for a a normal Sunday ride yeah this kind of a cool Little Mix but yeah we got bikes rolling through here right now quite a few bikes out on the road we're a little bit before sturis you we're coming a little bit early so I'm sure there would be more if we were closer to when sturis started but yeah we got about couple hours 130 140 mil before we finally get into our final destination sturis we're actually trying to run away from a storm right now a bunch of storm clouds coming in we got sprinkled on a little bit about 30 minutes ago but we're heading in a direction away from the storm which is always good as opposed to riding Into the Storm so we've been able to avoid rain thus far thank goodness knock on wood you know hopefully we can get all the way there without you know running through rainclouds we'll [Music] see [Music] one thing I've learned about traveling the open roads in the midwestern United States is avoiding storms it's a lot like playing Frogger with the rain clouds you can see danger up ahead you can wait a minute and try to avoid the cloud by having it pass in front of you or you can spin that throttle and hope to get in front of it before it passes over you on this trip we weren't always successful in avoiding those rain [Music] clouds [Music] the best way I can describe being pelted with hail at 80 Mi an hour is if someone shot you with a paintball gun at Point Blank Range we had ice chunks about half the size of a golf ball raining down on us the fullface helmets were coming in clutch as well in fact I was trying to use my head to block as much of the ice as I could for those of us that decided to suit up and fold of their jackets as well were spared any wels in our upper torso however most of us were wearing jeans and they were nowhere near thick enough to spare us from a bunch of welts on our shins so we decided to slow way down to about 20 mph meanwhile cars are passing us on the left at high speeds it wasn't the most Pleasant situation in the moment but looking back on it it was a hell of an [Music] adventure [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh just stopped off at Newcastle here you know I I got to say people described the rain and the weather to me and we just experienced it exactly the way people have described it to me it'll be perfectly sunny 95° outside next thing you know downpour just like heavy heavy heavy downpour all of a sudden and that's kind of what we experienced since like it's weird it's kind of isolated it's like we went through a raincloud and it was like almost zero visibility heavy rainfall and we came out the other side it was clear and then we went underneath another cloud and it was like heavy Heavy D down for and so yeah it's almost like okay do we put our rain gear on or not uh we've only got about 70 80 more miles to get to our Airbnb it's like okay do we just wear our regular clothes or we put ring gear on I don't know it's yeah it's pretty unpredictable go going through the motions I'm dreaming of the ocean as I swim above a river bed life is so fraudulent towel off my guilt as I shuffle through the silt draw a line in the sand wonder where I should [Music] stand [Music] oh I don't want to be the one who's loose with all the bad news it's not mine to tell I'm not a vessel I'm a shell Falling Dark Matter with justce matter in of a warm glow it's the only thing I'll let [Music] show oh oh [Music] do I sit by myself ask for quiet for help do I lie on a couch let someone figing me out so get [Music] inside now I'm getting in TI of this feeling tired of this feel finally got to the Wyoming South Dakota border officially entering South Dakota we're on uh this is like Highway 89 or something like that Super Rad Highway every road we've been on the last 2 days has been awesome so we're going to get some shots here and we're only about maybe about 30 mil away from our Airbnb so shouldn't be too much longer looks like we got some looming rain clouds so we may catch a little bit of rain on the way in it's funny how when you're in the moment everything seems a little bit worse than it does when you're looking at it from hindsight the sun was going down and the rain and Hell storm was still fresh on our minds we were pretty close to the place that we were staying at all of us kept looking at our weather map and it showed 90% rain with a bunch of thunderstorms looking at things now from hindsight the storm clouds moving in created this really rad atmosphere as we rolled into the black hills and we saw a bunch of bikers out on the road as if no storm was even coming but honestly as the week went on I realized that rain in the Black Hills was just kind of a way of life and people don't really alter their plans that much just based on the [Music] forecast [Music] [Music] just chilling here I've been here for about 10 minutes here in in Sturgis we're actually closer to Deadwood than we are sturis we're kind of on the highway in between Deadwood and sturis we got a pretty cool Airbnb everybody pitched in there's nine of us that all kind of pulled our money and got this really nice Airbnb yeah this place is beautiful just coming in through the Black Hills and everything heard a lot of stories this is my first time here and so yeah it's definitely living up to the hype right now we got sun and Rain pretty interesting yeah it's crazy how like the rainstorms just kind of move through through real quickly a lot different weather than California that's for sure but I think we're going to try to hit up like a grocery store get some food for the week we are pumped to hit up all the hot spots this week that's for sure got a cool garage with all the bikes in it check this place out guys got the bikes right here downtown area there's everything [Music] there from a hotel though we're not staying anymore [Music] [Applause] [Music] waking up here in Deadwood South Dakota perfect morning the weather shows it's going to be like 70° outside so we couldn't ask for a better day so we're going to go ahead and just jump right into the good stuff today we're going to head down to like the Black Hills Mount Rushmore Custer State Park area check that all out and yeah it should be good we had some morning repairs already Stephan doing a little bit of a clutch adjustment any luck my friend uh get getting closer getting closer was a misconception I thought the 1K service had been done but it hasn't so I just ordered an oil change and nobody check the clutch and it is a little bit off we have almost a whole tool tool set nice thanks man but I just no problem I would have just ridden the bike the way it is but that's just me he's Stephan's a a [Applause] [Music] perfectionist you fix it step it is it good good for today it's we're going to do an extended test ride okay uh and then we will see later on today if it's okay I'm not 100% sure let's say 95% yeah give me 5 minutes to get on the proper gear and then I'm ready this is stures you're good just the way you are yeah but I want I uh no I'm always wearing my mostly wearing my helmet probably most probably always wearing my helmet that's I think that's the [Music] expression [Music] [Music] so on our first day in sturis we were pretty ambitious we wanted to just jump right into the stuff that we were excited about the most so we left Deadwood in the morning we headed down here and we caught the 385 we took the 385 all the way down this is a great Road by the way continue to follow the 385 all the way down went over this really cool Dam right here follow this down to Three Forks and then headed into Keystone after we stopped in Keystone we were going to go into Mount Rushmore Mount Rushmore was something that we were all pretty excited about very few people in our group had ever been there before and I think everyone had pretty high expectations of it something you've seen your entire life but finally got to see it in person after Mount Rushmore we would head back to Keystone and grab a bite to eat right there before we headed down down into kuster State Park via Iron Mountain Road my cousin Chris rode out from the state of Washington so he took a little bit different route than we did and met up with us in downtown Deadwood the night before during dinner but he came out on his 2020 model year Road King special we've done a couple rides together like Glacier National Park and Tahoe and so it was good to finally meet up with him on day one of our Sturgis [Music] trip [Music] [Laughter] n Cher lives down in the South working at the Waffle House has a second job at midnight when it's time to leave cost $750 never seems to pay the rent you got to have a trick or too that's hidden up your sleep the living they magic act days long and that's a fact money still ain't quite enough for her and all the kids times change she always says the good old days are gone dead she tucks the kids into their bed like mama always did but it's hard when you ain't got nobody and it's hard when no way feels like home it's hard when and the world has gone [Music] crazy seem just like everything means nothing all he was laid off just last week make parts for big machines that me a lot of fancy things that folks don't buy no more now he's in the old Motel lately he don't sleep too well holding down the dark that he's never felt before but some nights when it's getting late the diner by the interstate serves him up a nice H plate to fill him for time chery's always working there the big blue eyes and all hair she treats them nice and seems to care about what's on his M but it's hard when you ain't got nobody it's hard when no it feels like home it's hard when the world has gone [Music] crazy seems just like everything means nothing all we try we [Music] try try with everything we have just to make it by every try we try try with all our heart and soul just feel like Sheriff says will that be all a jukebox plays a country WS Jim it's feeling mighty tall and he has C to dance you guys think about got that ride in nice beautiful right it's probably the best ride I've been on that so awesome dude it's it's going to be hard to beat that yeah but you know without thunder and lightning it was a little bit less scary yeah it wasn't as dramatic okay before we get in quick spur the- moment history lesson for Matt who are the presidents of Mount Rushmore uh Thomas Jefferson Lincoln uh George Washington uh is it Hamilton who built the national parks man oh that's uh TDY Roosevelt come on come on give me your freaking Patriot card man The Bu moose I got I got three out of four right [Applause] [Music] yeah well we all decided that we wanted to do Mount Rushmore first it's the one place that we all agreed on well we all agreed on a lot of places but Mount Rushmore is kind of one of these iconic places when you come to the sturis area in the Black Hills so we made it a lot of Tourism here right now but yeah first time I've ever been here this is pretty cool I think it lives up all the hype might check out kuster State Park as well well for sure we're going to check that out and yeah the weather's probably about 80° today yeah turning out to be an awesome ride and it's Donald J truck it's going to be the greatest Monument tour you've ever seen maybe IO Monument tour you know I host the biggest ones every year we did Fourth of July here some of the biggest fireworks there were talks of you eventually putting your face on this Monument here I have the paperwork round up it's being happeny as we speak we're here at Mount Rushmore beautiful that you think oh it's awesome it's everything it lived up to be pretty nice the right end was the the fun part though I mean it was top three best rides I've ever been on me personally Black Hills have lived up to the hype there's a lot of things in this world that don't live up to the hype this is up to the hype oh 110% do you mind if I take a picture both of us I heard you're big in Germany $20 only a dies you take credit card yeah okay looks like a Patagonia commercial I know so funny it's like yo where's my columia shoes and my uh my North Face jacket yeah it know it's funny again we did the same thing when we went to uh horseshoe band we like passing people on all their hiking gear we're like jeans and captain captain of course down of course you got to be a captain [Music] [Music] next all right we got all our memories Forever Memories that was nice yeah really good experience dude I'm not I don't even want to share it with the world ready for this no no they're not [Music] yes right after we had lunch and took our oldtime photo in Keystone we headed south and just south of there is the entrance to one of the best roads in the sturis area and that is the Iron Mountain Road this is the road that all the photos are taken at the granite tunnels all the pig t turns this was easily one of my most memorable most favorite roads that I took during the entire week at sturis this is a must ride type of a road and then from here you enter into the kuster state park go west here and then if you want to see the Buffalo you're going to want to take the wildlife Loop so you'll take a left here this is a really like narrow road we saw a bunch of Buffalo along this road this is really cool on a motorcycle I'm sure it gets crowded if there's too many cars but being on a bike really helps out a lot but yeah this is definitely off the beaten path and then we took it back up to the 16a and then that's right where the needles Highway entrance is and we actually just took this by accident I didn't even know about the Needles Highway coincidentally enough I was kind of surprised about that but the Needles Highway is this 87 and it also is if not the best one of the top three roads you can take in the sturis area this Needles Highway is a small narrow road goes right through this dense thick pine tree area and then climbs up to the needles area with all these like Jagged rocks shooting straight up out of the ground you got needle eye up here just one of the most iconic rides that you can do in sturis area this is a must ride Road you got to do it absolutely epic up [Music] here come on you young rounders story of all promise of [Music] Heaven and the Waring of hell but take heed where you ramble but too soon you will go way up on theill side where the new flowers [Music] grow and he met in spring time suns two Star Cross l in the still melting snow where the Ling was easy and The Cordon was brie where they called her a be called him in quiet of the they Ste away where the laughter would flow and the fedal would [Music] play well the folks called it wrong but hell it seemed all right and the un painted picture and the day turn to night come up on the [Music] hillside we'll have a time you bring the kisses honey I'll bring the wine keep your heart guarded too soon it'll fall when one walks back home honey only one knows it all now she walked up the inside one heart is a hun always knows the it's and her father's old pistol hanging loose [Music] Byers when she aimed once she never shot well the air was SS sky was so fly Dr through the tunnel I stalled my bike I saw that don't judge me I saw that she heard Two Shots ring out roads like the Iron Mountain Road just don't get built anymore the thing that I find the most interesting about it is it doesn't get you from point A to point B the fastest it wasn't built in a way that's the most efficient it definitely wasn't the most coste effective way to build a road like this whoever signed off on this road and engineered this road I want to give him a handshake and pad on the back because I'm pretty sure the only thing they had in mind was how much fun we can give our visitors to the Black Hills on this road I mean they built Bridges just for the sole purpose of going through the middle of a rock they went out of their way to make the road go up areas that just don't make any sense but they're by far the most beautiful way that the road could have been designed the Iron Mountain Road is probably the closest thing you'll ever find to Manufactured fund for motorcyclists and the warning of but take heed where you ramble or too soon you will go way up on the hill side where the new flowers grow they met in the [Music] springtime Sun sing two star Crow to Lovers In the Still melting snow where the L was easy and the courton was brief there they called her a beauty called him a in the quiet of the theyd Ste away where the laughter would flow and the fal would [Music] play yeah the folks called it wrong but hell it seemed all right cruising through kuster state park right now awesome roads out here awesome roads I Now understand why everyone converges on stur just once a year the riding out here is epic love the culture out here as well everybody's on two wheels or three wheels and yeah the Black Hills are gorgeous beautiful scenery out here loving it right now keep Your Heart guarded too soon it'll fall one one walks back home honey the one knows it all well she walked up the hill side oh one day in the heart is a hun always knows of it's PR and her father's old pistol hanging Loose by hers when she AED once she never shot twice well the air was so still sky was so blue I thought we were in kuster State Park earlier but we weren't we were just on our way through the Black Hills but now we are officially in kuster State Park we're at the visitor center right now just chilling so we're going to do the wildlife Loop right now which the ranger told us about and he said there's going to be some Buffalo down there so we hope to see some tatonka some bison down there check them out maybe get some good shots on the cameras and stuff and then head back up 385 back into [Music] [Music] Deadwood [Music] got a big old herd here on the side of the road we're just checking them out hopefully we don't get attacked or something like that yeah we're getting some uh 200 mm footage of the Buffalo right now pretty cool they're all just chilling out right here [Applause] [Music] a a [Applause] [Music] after we finished up with the Wilderness loop I was looking for a road just to take us back to the 385 back to Deadwood so I randomly picked the Mountain Road off the map and it just so happened to be Needles Highway Needles Highway is easily in the top three best roads in the greater Sturgis area I'm not sure how this road wasn't on my radar but I'm definitely glad that we just stumbled upon it by accident the road starts off as a two-lane Highway in the middle of nowhere you feel like you're lost in the South Dakota Countryside and then eventually it has you winding up a beautiful mountain pass with a bunch of the iconic South Dakota Rock tunnels the sun was going down and The Rock needle spires were looking pretty Majestic in the skyline and this evening riding home was easily the best surprise of the entire trip [Music] [Music] there color in there I like the color it doesn't quite wrap around as good though I think the other one might be the a smack B bug oh they're thick stickers too TC's make sure doesn't overlap that's the key glad you backwards he was yeah you were on it yeah we're on the 87 North trying to catch back the 385 to go north towards Deadwood meeting a friend of mine in Deadwood Deadwood Lodge I think is what it's called for dinner tonight the sun's starting to set so you got that perfect lighting right
