hey there viewers and welcome back to the south main auto channel that's a 2000 toyota 4runner it's got the big three four and the money light is on now the guy had it checked out a while ago and told me that he needs new oxygen sensors and new cadillac converters and just wanted those installed no diagnosis don't go calling him and tell him i need some ejector that's what he told me exact words uh needless to say when i pulled it in the engine's misfiring terrible uh so in good conscious i can't put you know thousand dollars worth of cadillac converters and action sensors on this thing until i know why it's misfiring now again he did not ask me to look at that but we just can't really move forward and feel good about it in our part in our mind so i ran a system scan that looks like we only have three modules uh we have nine codes however in the ecm so let's just see what codes are see if there goes some direction they should uh cylinder three four misfire four misfire cat codes random misfires three four three four cat codes so it appears that our pending code is cylinder four current coded cylinder three it did only feel like a single cylinder mist to me um i don't know if these have misfired data in the data stream i'll just check see if there's a anything here that's helpful while we're right here before we get too far but at least we have some direction there nothing there so we'll pop in live data i don't know it's pretty old it's 20 year old vehicle so it may not uh misfire monitor is available good to see that the codes haven't been cleared and monitors are complete there we go so we do have misfire counts all the way up to cylinder eight on this six cylinder engine hopefully we don't have a specifier on seven and eight i'll pick these okay and just to make sure that our scan data is updating and complete it's always a good idea to have a live data pit so such as engine rpm so let's fire this beast up and make sure she's a three pedal make sure it is in neutral and it is the clutch override button crank it up cylinder four she's shaking pretty good here so it looks like cylinder four uh no misfire counts on three or seven or eight but definitely cylinder four so that that is our comprehensive hopefully as long as scan data isn't lying to us now just because it says cylinder four it doesn't always mean cylinder force so kind of take that with a grain of salt if you get to cylinder four and you're you know putting plugs and wires and injectors and you know changing everything and now all of a sudden your problem is on cylinder three or it's not on four well it could be because it's lying to us one thing i do want to know before we get too far is where is cylinder number four so we will just take a quick peek here toyota v6 fahrenheit one two three four five six front of engine so it's gonna be left bank driver side middle cylinder so that's all we need to know driver side middle cylinder 246 135 so just very quickly looking at scan data we've learned some stuff we've learned what cylinder potentially it has the misfire we've also learned the cylinder bank layouts we know that cylinder you know two four and six is down the left side so left side driver side middle um and what else did we learn i think that's about it uh we have direction now so now we have to determine you know what are we missing you know what's it take to make that cylinder go bang uh you know we can quickly probably do a relative compression so let's do that i'm gonna hold her foot to the floor i don't know if it has clear flood mode but let's just have a listen listen while it cranks no it doesn't have clear flood mode but it has an extended crank so like all toyotas do so let's just hear if it sounds normal and it does so i'm likely not going to do a relative compression test because this seems to be a dead hole not a low contribution type misfire it's a dead miss uh sounds relatively normal well it cranks so now we're going to be kind of focusing our efforts uh you know fuel and spark because it likely has compression just from listening to it so hopefully that makes sense to you before we get too excited let's just see if we can pull out a spark plug here or plug wire rather let's have a look kind of visual inspection these do well never mind i was going to say these do have a tendency to burn holes through the side of them let me get this unhooked here because i think i see the issue already wham bam there she is we're going to check it for spark but we don't have to because it has spark and it also has a giant piece of carbon tracking here so ah this diet video sucks but anyways it keeps us to our basics let me enhance and hence enhance enhance unenhanced so there it is folks this is what we're looking at right here this little white snail trail that's left on there that is carbon tracking that is a hole through the side of the plug wire and we have spark making it to ground so if we were to have thrown a scope on this plug wire we would have seen what would have looked to be a perfect textbook spark waveforms we have spark occurring outside the cylinder but if we were keen and observant if we had a scope on it we would also notice that there was really no turbulence in our sparkline which can trick some people if i had more time i would show you just have to take my word for it uh i guess to prove out this theory clearly let me uh get a fix no parts required ivan's gonna be proud of the black tape now this is temporary use only and for demonstration purposes only or if you own your own this car you can just fix it this way i wouldn't recommend it yes i would no i wouldn't i can't comment on that we're gonna go like this and as long as there's still connection and it hasn't you know burnt through the inside here uh burnt the end of the wire off our spark should make it down to our spark plug this is super redneck by the way so now that we've sealed up our electrical leak and have added the piece of resistance we'll go back into the hole blend the plug [Music] give her the click now we should be able to go inside and fire it up i think we're going to be done all before lunch time so that would be a quick one oh no totals i would miss lunch uh let's see we're going to go ahead and go back here and go to diane go to here go here here and here and here then we'll get some live data you can't even see what a dink now you can so 4 3 1 2 3 a b c get cylinders one through eight all right and as i mentioned do as i say not as i do you definitely want to have a live data pit otherwise you might think hey i fixed it but really your data's not updating what's up oh it's alright she's smooth so hopefully you can hear it that it's actually running smooth and ours can let's get into that noise oh somebody drive by our scan tools not jittering um so that's that so we can say well you know you need some secondary ignition tune up and uh of course like i said i wasn't asked to diagnosis so this is just where we're at but now we can put on the parts that he wants the kell converter and his oxygen sensors and know that hopefully it's not going to start misfiring and trash everything we just did so am i going to leave it like that you betcha i'm gonna leave it like that for now uh of course i took a picture of it and i will document this for the customer because if you know they neglect to fix it and it starts misfiring and it burns up all these cats that we put on it then uh you know it's not my problem baby uh we're just you know make them aware that this needs a tune up a secondary ignition tune-up that the plug wires burnt through you know who knows how many miles got on a box 70 even in six i'm and you know so it needs that very likely could have original spark plugs in it who knows i guess we'll just use this video because it does kind of suck and it was short and sweet stick to the basics what do you know don't get too in-depth don't go dragging out your scope and fancy scan tools uh until you kind of have some direction you know go from a broad perspective big picture down to a narrow pinpoint test you know if we checked it and we're like hey we got spark uh you know maybe have a quick look at the spark plug probably wouldn't i'd probably put a scope on a wire at that point and see what's happening in the cylinder and let's say we have spark compression sounds good now we're gonna do injector waveform we're gonna see is that injector firing is that injector you know shorted you know what what's going on here uh what are we missing so but we got lucky this time found it on the first go round so why don't you guys go around down there to that comment box leave a questions comments criticism concern find us instead facebook and uh just remember viewers if i can do it you can do it thanks for watching
