Starting a Stump Grinding Business

[Music] well hey everybody welcome to the youtube channel uh if your first time here this is going to be the beginning of a series that i'm going to do on how to start your own stump grinding business uh i have been through the youtube videos of countless others that have kind of walked people through this and by no disrespect to any of them everybody's got their own way of doing things uh i am a mom and pop uh we have a corporation it is an s corporation we run a tree service as well as a stump grinding business and uh do debris hard so that being said i've been doing this for about 20 years i know it does work what doesn't work uh some of this is trial and error guys um so i'm gonna give you kind of a series new to this on creating a series so bear with me we do have a ton of videos on the stump grinder itself and also our bond and just the whole stump rig set up that we're running out here in uh baldwin county alabama and i just want to give you all a just kind of a tutorial on how to make this thing successful we are light years ahead of the your average joe stump grinding guy um for lack of a better phrase but uh that being said we do different things when it comes to marketing we market ourselves completely different than what you would ordinarily think we do everything from cold call door knocking when we see a stump to you know door hangers to flags on the stumps to you know digital marketing you know google ads facebook ads uh and then of course you know we venture into the referral business where our referrals we reward them as well as uh contacting algorithms they do everything in their power these days to not help us out um so i will do everything in my power to make these work and keep them informational but at the same time some form of entertaining to keep you all uh enjoying the videos so i'm taking this video inside our stump trailer this is a 20-foot enclosed dump truck i'm sorry 20-foot enclosed trailer uh that we bring in our bandit sg75 uh and the camera is sitting on top of our 528 which is where this this big grapple is attached to and as you can probably see on here you've got the stump wall i'm sorry the saw wall as well as a wall full of stuff for tree gear and to further enhance our abilities to do stump removal with cutting large trunks you know base cuts whatnot and hauling them away so we are a grind and haul business that what i mean by that is that we not just grind out the stump but we haul away those clippings for our customers um the old to do is just a quote-unquote grind and go uh these guys get their they grind they go they don't want to bother with the rest they don't want a pitchfork they don't want to rake they don't blow it in they don't clean it up and they leave it this disaster here for a customer so we'll go into all those in these future videos i'm going to try to do a step by step on how to approach from setting up your business as in gear wise uh what kind of equipment you need what you need to haul it around in trucks trailers whatnot you can go from everything super super my new small and tiny to just a truck in a pull behind to something more like what we've got is a truck that has a dump bed on it as well as a trailer with a slap full of everything you could possibly want something i mean we could manage a tree crew out of this let alone stumps so we're probably light years ahead of what most people are used to but when we pull up people are absolutely amazed and watch these future videos and you'll see exactly why so we're going to go through everything from equipping yourself to marketing yourself to customer service sales all together as a whole customer service is all part of that and what makes you unique compared to your competitor you've got to have a something that sets you apart from them what makes you the reason why your customer should go with you versus you know larry lunchbox that's just going to grind and go so we're going to talk about that and give you some examples of that then we're going to go over the overall operations on how you physically grind a stump how you maintain your equipment how to properly maintain your equipment that's a big thing how to properly maintain keeping your equipment up and running so that it's optimal performance at all times so that your your breakdown time is bare minimums and equipping you i'm going to try to help equip you on how to make repairs in the field and equip yourself so that you can make those repairs in the field last thing you want to have to deal with is being broke down and having your stuff at a shop for weeks on end or waiting for parts to come in so we'll go over all of that as well and then it's going to be the so your maintenance so your repairs and the general upkeep of everything and then the moving on to hiring on people because if you really want to succeed in this and become bigger you're going to need to know how to sell contractual work that means governmental type work you know your cities municipalities counties and whatnot and then all of your tree customers as a subcontractor that you'll subcontract through them to grind all of their stunts and then your private residential customers so there's a huge swath of customers out there you just need to know how to get to them how to market yourself to do that i'm going to teach you that i'm going to help you along the way with that if you have any questions you have any hey man this isn't working for me what do i do listen i've been in this business for the last 20 years uh in tree business all together so uh there is very little that i have come across that i haven't failed in and learned from that mistake in order to create the the experience and the knowledge that comes behind that so you've got a wealth of knowledge in me uh and you know what there's not enough people out there that are willing to take their successes and dump it onto the youtube marketplace to try to help other people be successful when they're in it's free it's not going to cost you a dime and i'm looking forward to hopefully hearing some success stories from others
