hey guys it's white with try dirt works bringing a video today all about stump grinding i want to go over a lot of topics today in this video specifically about how stump grinding has been a part of our lives our work lives when we got started while we got started how we got started how many machines have we had in our day each of the pros and cons of the machines i'll show some pictures about them so just a really overview of how stump grounding has been successful in our business and will continue to be a staple in our business so let's dive into the video when we got started so we got started in the early 2000s i'm going to call it 2001 that is when dad bought his first grinder so we've been at it in the stump grounded game for about 20 years now which is uh crazy to think about because that is almost a lifetime for me and that's how long it's been in our family and that's how long it's been a staple in our business so yeah that's when we got started so [Music] 2001. so the main reason why dad got started in the stump grinding i want to mention he did work at a large landscaping company and he had a really good job and they do really good work and they're still in business today i'll leave out names just for privacy purposes and stuff but the main reason why he started was extra money to provide for his family we had a big family and always extra money is always a good thing especially in tough times and stump grinding was there and has been there and will continue to be there to provide for extra income and things like that so that's kind of why he got started in the grinding all right folks brings us to our first grinder that we ever had or dad's first grinder diving back in the memory bank here and probably not 100 accurate on the make and model but after scrolling through google and looking at the old reco machines it might not be the exact model and make but this is the size comparison that we had and kind of the the time frame and the the age of the machine i believe it was a raikou and the only difference the wheel in the back there was a flywheel that you had to guide so it was hydraulic pulled and but you just had a flywheel in the back that you steered it with if that makes any sense but this is the size comparison and this is about the the machine that we had back in the early 2000s this machine i can tell you looks like it is in way better condition than the one we had this one looks like something that you buy off the showroom floor compared to what we had so uh yeah this is the first grinder that we ever had ground a lot of stumps with it and uh till it retired until we got rid of it we do not currently still have this machine wish we did because it's kind of a vintage thing now it'd be cool to have so the second stump grinder that we got right here is a reiko rg13 and it is exactly what the name says it's a mini workforce and it works like a horse i'll tell you that right now this is the stump grinder that dad has ground the most dumps out in his career it is tritrude is reliable this is brand new picture of it definitely doesn't look like that definitely some features off of it by this point but he's had it over 17 years now and kind of a fun fact with this one it has a 13 horsepower honda engine on it and dad has actually swapped the engine out with a brand new engine probably six times and with that being said he swapped it out because the stump grinding they take a beating they're in dusty conditions all the time all of its life no matter how good you beat the air filters and stuff off getting thousands of hours out of these little engines is uh near impossible so it's just easier to pay you know six seven hundred dollars maybe a thousand for a uh a new engine and put it on there and get right back to work so that's what he's done throughout the life of this machine it's actually out of commission right now it needs a new engine ironically so we're going to put it on probably the next couple weeks to come and get that one back in circulation because this machine out of all the machines has been the most viable reliable it's small it's still big enough to get on some some monster stumps but you can push it through gates tight access which we're all about you know this by now uh try dirt works we kind of specialize in these small backyards the small tight access locations that we have to get our machines in so we're just really really glad that this machine came into our business a long time ago and trying to get it back on the circulation to get it back in working and uh you know make more money with it and let it shine uh how it always does so that's the second machine the third machine that we got is this little toro mini stump grinder and i don't know the make and model on that but this is definitely the one imaged here on this video and we still use this uh dog baby uh pretty often actually usually on a weekly basis uh the pros on this one is that it's so small it's so lightweight it is just about like pushing a lawnmower a push mower it's a lot heavier you know of course but um same premise is small it gets in compact locations you can actually pick this thing up and loaded on the back of a pickup truck with you and one other person you got the handlebars right there to do that easily and it's just an all-around good machine you're not going to tackle big stumps with this machine because the cutting blade is just so small the wheel and um but it's really good for the small small stumps you know maybe 10 inches and less in diameter but it still serves its purpose and it's in circulation as we speak and it gets used on a weekly basis and glad to have this one in the fleet as well this brings us to our last and final machine that we're going to talk about in the video this is our most current machine and we definitely use this on a weekly basis if not every other day basis and it is the carlton sp5014 and it is a workhorse in itself and uh we we love using it it takes a lot of the manual work out of it like you saw in the middle two machines that we have and you don't have to do it manually and it and it really does save some brack back brake and labor and it's a great machine this picture that you see right here is a yellow version of it we actually have the red you've seen it in probably all of our stunt grinding videos mainly and uh yeah it's a great machine if we could buy another carlton maybe we definitely want to go up in size we feel like this one for the size is a little underpowered that's really the only drawback that we have with it at this point we still need to break her in and get a lot more hours on it before we can make a final say on whether this is a great machine or not but any guy [Music] all right moving right along from all the machines that we had quite cool seeing them all laid out there in kind of a timeline order and uh you know old machines new machines all that good stuff but now we're going to move into kind of how our stump grinding business is structured and how we go about getting new business and uh you know just the business side of things and how all that goes so first i want to mention um it has been a great income it's not been a tremendous amount of income you know compared to the other stuff that we provide our customers and our clients but over the last 20 years i can honestly say and dad can agree with me that it has came in clutch so to speak in a lot of different times of our lives you know dad going out on the weekends and working saturdays and sundays to keep up with demand and keep up with the growing family and all that stuff that comes along with it to provide and it really did add a lot of benefited income to his uh full-time job then and it provides a steady income for uh our business now in that sense it's a lot of fill-in work you know stump grinding is something easy that you i don't want to say it's easy but it's something that doesn't take a lot of time it doesn't take a lot of effort to do it's not as intensive as grading you can just kind of roll up unload your machine get in the groove of things get on the stump and kind of complete the task it's like a uh it's like a relaxing thing it's like somebody would mow their yard and and be mesmerized and relaxed by the act of doing that so it's not that high tense especially if you're grinding with a carlton you know you just got to stand there and just let the machine do what it does and operate it accordingly so that's kind of how it is structured um and and how it has really added a benefit to our income it's not the main thing that we do on a daily basis we don't go out and we don't sell stumps we don't beat the doors down we don't knock on doors we don't advertise that we do stumps as it's always been a part of what dad's done and his reputation has definitely exceeded in our area as far as stump grinding uh we're more in on the uh the the stuff that the big guys don't want to do i know we keep saying that we fall into a real tight niche with our line of work a lot of our machines are small and nimble and can get in some tight places a lot of stuff that we grind is it might be one or two stumps it might be really close to the foundation and we're just tasked with a bunch of specialty stumps like we like to call them so it's not like we go out and advertise and follow tree service people around and get a large quantity of stumps when we get stumps they usually range from anywhere from one stump to four stumps on any given job and maybe just one and all different shapes and sizes and but we take care of them all because we like to serve our clients and a lot of the landscapers that we work for they know that we have grinders and they use us accordingly when they run into a situation where they dug down and they wasn't anticipating a stump being below the ground and they can't proceed with planting trees or bushes or their installs on their landscaping they will give us a call and we will make it as the most accommodating as possible to get over there in a timely manner and ground those stumps out accordingly so they can continue working so that's kind of how we're structured and how it's been a very great blessing to us in our business [Music] so in closing stump grinding is a staple in our business and will always be a service that we provide for some people it's just a stump that needs to come out that's simple right but for me and my family grinding stumps has molded me into what i am today and i will go into great detail with that i can always remember my first thoughts of working and getting out and being with my dad on a job site was grinding stumps he involved me in that aspect of life at a very young age and installed very very needed work ethic characteristics and just life lessons about life in general a lot of this came from stump grinding it is who i am it's made me who i am today i'm blessed to be a part of it uh throughout the video you've seen some clips you've seen clips of my dad grinding you've seen clips of me dr uh grinding stumps and you've seen clips of my brother grinding stumps so it's a a big part of our family i can't say enough about it we will continue to always provide this service it means a lot to us we love doing it we love the quality job that we provide our customers and with that guys this video i hope you enjoyed it this was definitely a different style video took me a lot longer to edit a lot of thought went into this video so if
