let me start with a little history lesson when Bethesda released Maureen in the ancient times of 2002 it was supposed to be a Hail Mary from a dying Studio quite like squaresoft with his final fantasy in 1987. this game saved the company despite its Jank through excellent writing interesting gameplay and a mountain of content it became one of the legendary Classics almost overnight alongside baldos gate 2 Deus Ex and very few others and the following DLCs especially blood moon just cemented this reputation for excellence sadly this is also a standard that Bethesda never really managed to live up to so first original Ip from Bethesda in almost 20 years least we can say is that thoughts company has had its ups and downs since the success of Morrowind and in the past 10 years the actual production from Bethesda has had remarkably little to do for the company's profit margin and for those that are already angrily typing Skyrim it came out in 2011 and I do not consider an adversary version is warranted for a game that's not even 20 years old anyway in case somebody wonders and because I know it's going to come up I'm playing on PC config in the description and I could not care less about the console Wars game pass or PS5 release being days after Microsoft the only thing I want from Sony's to stop being retards and release bloodborne on PC onto the review proper so let's start where all RPG should start character creation in this game after about 10 minutes of intro give or take you access a character creator and credit where credit is due this is probably the most complete bethesdiver made at in terms of purely physical attributes if you want to play on an RX sequel more video will be a Spaceman you can just never pay attention to the fact you're frequently above 1G or ask your knees how they feel about it it's also in the Character Creator like you probably know that we're gonna start to see a little bit of a theme mainly that Bethesda is not aiming at making money on the quality of its product but on past glory and ESG score whether you like it or not male and female are not body types everything else is dementia and if they them are going to be your pronouns then mine are mind filler and you are obligated to use that and I'm pretty sure the Nexus will also ban such a mod alongside with a pronoun but why the hell is every female forbidden to have any proper hips or breast size Lover's lab you are only hope oh and as a note to Bethesda considering the pronouns actually don't work in the game and you are not going to include every one of them you're never gonna make any of the pronoun crazy is happy so you can stop trying back to gameplay so obviously this is an RPG and in Bethesda World it means progression is done in one of two ways you either improve your skill 10 times to gain a level that's the Elder Scrolls way or you get an experience until you gain a level and and get extra attributes and put points to improve your character otherwise known as The Fallout wave when it comes to stuff field we have a slightly new system meaning that we gather XP for every single Quest completion picking lock persuading character killing enemies pretty much every player action and Quest Milestone is going to give you some XP however that's one of the trappings of the game there are no character attributes whatsoever only perks and besides the one selected by your background in the Character Creator you will get one point per level to either improve your existing skill or require a new one every skill is part of one of five trees and every single tree is divided in 5 levels in order to access one of the next level you need to spend a certain amount of skill point in the previous one and you do not need to acquire every single skill in the previous tiers because each skill has 4 levels however because Bethesda probably realized how lacking in content the game was one that later every single skill that you're trying to improve or acquire is locked behind a mobile game style challenge you have already worked to get the XP in order to get a skill point so why in the name of all that is would there be a freemium feature in AAA game has Todd learned anything from all of his competitors being roasted about that now it's not always very difficult to complete the challenge it can be as simple as killing a certain number of enemies so so you can just blow the hobo your ways to the Galaxy and it will be relatively easily to kill up to 100 enemies however when you are talking about some skills like persuasion for example that like the name implies requires you to talk to people and have the specific interaction to persuade a character well if you take this skill too late you're going to be locked out because the game like I said is very lacking in content speaking of being a murder hobo let's talk about the combat it sucks it's the absolute rules that Bethesda has ever made and no this is not a weird system like in more wind where it was attached to your skills it's just a distillate of all of the worst element of Fallout 4 Combat zombie has no impact or way to it and for some reason every single time an enemy or yourself is hit you're going to freeze for about a second or two and there are also very few weapons I believe I counted five melee weapons in total during my run the guns have no record to speak of whether they are a pistol SMG AR or the equivalent in the game of a 50 BMG because Bethesda is insanely lazy instead of giving you select fire weapons with just a key to switch between fully and semi-automatic your guns are either full to burst or semi which is a big problem because despite firing the same goddamn round with the same barrel lengths the Damage Done by your gun is going to drop like a freaking Rock which is extremely detrimental because the enemies have an enormous amount of HP things you Oblivion high-level mud crab encounter but rules because it happens immediately at the start of the game so if you are trying to use a fully automatic weapon you're going to run out of ammunition extraordinarily fast which also brings me to a very disappointing element of lack of in the game obviously you are fighting wearing spacesuit because you are either in hard vacuum or extremely inhospitable environment so you would think there would be some kind of armor or suit Integrity mechanic but nope it does not matter how much puncture would you or your enemies have you do not feel the effect of -200 to plus 600 Celsius temperatures to those of you who don't understand searches zero is freezing point of water 100 is boiling point of water your allies though are not affected by ammunition count so as long as you give them a single round of every single type of ammunition they'll be able to reload an entire Magazine with that one round meaning automatic weapons are only reserved for your NPC companions not you sadly that's where another problem really tuggy head the AI is incredibly stupid it is stupider than it has ever been in any Bethesda game ever so every single time you start combat you will be sworn by a bunch of idiots taking questionable cover on occasion but mostly either not reacting much to gunfire or trying to rush you by taking the most awkward pass possible to your character and for the love of God do not give your company your companion grenade they do not understand the concept of object collision and neither do they understand the concept of throwing object in Low Gravity space combat is a little bit better but probably because it is the most arcade of arcade space fighting I have ever seen the second most boring part of the game to be completely honest you have some extremely basic power management and you use either laser to bring down the Shield or Auto cannons or ballistic weapons in order to bring down the whole of the ship and if you want to Target subsystem like you saw in the trailer well this is locked behind the scale once again and it is extremely awkward to use instead of doing a carbon copy of free space uh no you have to get close to the shape that you are targeting press on R and then maybe possibly you'll be hitting the system that you are targeting because the game does a very very bad job of actually telling you if the system is in line of sight or if it's on the other side of the ship speaking of ships don't try to make a big thing about the shipbuilding as well but it's not really great and still super Jack I started by trying to modify the base ship to make it more suited to well XP duration the stuff it should have been good for with workshop and more cargo space which made me realize the game gives you absolutely no information on how the ships are actually balanced for example the more weight you have the more landing gears you need fairly logical right except the game does not actually tell you what the limits are until you cross them how much you need to remove or what the modules you add actually do for example after I finally got access to the biggest ship class which are a b or c I started making an insanely expensive ship that would be able to do everything I wanted able to go anywhere murder most things and be able to carry a shitload of cargo it turned into a big pancake with three decks well two and a half really and about 80 meters long because this game does not allow you to travel battle textile with a big jump ship and a bunch of smaller ships docked onto it meaning you can forget everything about having Capital ships but anyway inside of the iship Builder there is what is called an engineering module which obviously I added thinking it would be like Star Trek with some workstation in order for me to build stuff that was a reasonable assumption for any sci-fi fan and I was extremely confused about not finding any workstation anywhere in that module only to realize that this module actually serves no purpose it is only cosmetic and if you wanted to have workstations you needed to build the workshop specifically and sadly this is a a recurring theme in many modules for example you have a bridge module which allows you to have four prisoner or rather shows you space for four prisoners but the problem is even though you have bounty hunting quests inside of this game you cannot actually have any prisoners on board this is cosmetic only answers no purpose same for the control room a really cool looking module that reminds me of the cic from Battlestar Galactica but serves absolutely no purpose another issue and that's not even just my engineer brain being triggered is that if you start building some relatively big multi-deck ships you have no control over where the doors or ladders are positioned which means you can have just like in pancake right here a veritable maze inside of the ship and some really really stupid placement like the Captain's Quarters you know the place that's supposed to be somewhat private essentially being a corridor for moving to the upper deck and then to the science lab instead of having the ladder I don't know coming out in the science lab instead the other big building feature that was shown prominently in the trailers The Outpost construction so remember as I would telling you oh you can absolutely Build Your settlement on a new planet that was a lie they are in reality very few modules most of them that don't even snap to each other or to a grid to make your placement easier they are incredibly ugly while consuming a shitload of resources that's in the small part why I give pancakes such an enormous cargo and unlike your ship they come completely unfurnished which is kind of a problem because if you fancy yourself a little bit of an interior designer or want to decorate your quote-unquote house the way you want then you cannot want to have everything aligned properly which just like in Fallout 4 is never going to happen because you rotate with the right and left Mouse button so you will never be able to have the correct angle except on stuff that goes onto wall and will actually snap to the wall so I guarantee you when they made the trailer showing The Decorator that post I can guarantee you it was either made with the level editor or they found a slave also known as intern there is also a logistic networks in the game similar to the one you had in Fallout 4 mini expansions to share resources between Outpost but once again this is something that you have to set up manually in the same very awkward interface that you use to build the Outpost I cannot believe this is happening but Starfield is making me miss the interface from X4 but before you can even think about building outposts and once the game gives you your ship and finally lets you go wherever you want you encounter what was presented as the biggest selling point of the game the exploration etiat root was part of the game it is entirely we've got no man's Sky crowned as a king of false advertisement you hope I.E fast travel from planet to planet and you scan you do nothing else you scan you get in scam mode you try to find all of the inorganic resources scan all of the wildlife in each biome of a planet and you don't even have to scan the wildlife once oh no no no you have to scan eight member of each plant and animal species depending on the planet you can have up to 8 plants and eight animals that means you have to scan 128 things and you're not even sure to find them easily I have spent a solid 50 minutes just looking for eight of a specific species and make cake help you if it's a solitary Hunter and there is not even a bonus for outposts if you completely solder your planet all you get is a little bit of XP and some survey data that you can sell for a few thousand credits it's almost nothing in this game I can guarantee you somebody watched star sector and decided to copy the feature but star sector does not make you track for 50 minutes for a single species you do have some random caves here and there to collect some quote-unquote rare resources that you can also find on the surface most of the time and you have some structure to explore quote-unquote but they're exactly copy pasted with a randomized loot chest at the end once you've seen one you've seen them all I think I can remember Todd Howard mentioning Daggerfall in one of the previous presentations but Daggerfall had randomized generation of dungeons not thousand times to randomizer is as I regularly got into locked containers with Master locks that had far worse content than the ones with novice locks and to make things even more tedious there are no mounts in this game no bikes no hover bikes no nothing so considering that the dungeons or let's call them dungeons for the sake of argument which are separated by hundreds of meters and sometimes as much as 1.2 kilometers I think was a record you need to work for solid 8 to 10 minutes to get there in a game where you have a vital spaceship and to add insult to injury they even dream of quality of life feature that have been present since Morrowind like the local map so if you get lost in one of the very few Interiors you have no clue where you are or where you're supposed to go seriously Star Citizen does everything better than stuff field regarding the technical aspect let's be completely clear when taught and people with early kids were saying that it was released buggy game Bethesda has ever outputted that was a lie again what a surprise Skyrim no probably no freaking Moro wind for all its Jank was less buggy than this I have encountered more bugs and broken quests in Starfield than I think in any of the other game and it is the very first time ever that I've had to use a console command in the best game without mods no nothing to fix the game and Quest triggers most often because of a stock character or because one of the invulnerable characters had somehow managed to die Todd has also recently said that the game had been optimized for PC now that should get Bethesda suit for Force advertising I have an extremely decent PC and while the game was battery smooth with over 100 FPS ish in small environments like the large or the starting ship the second you get in combat with six ship or more or if you build something in the size of pancake your performance take a massive dive in some battles it went down to sub 30 FPS and because I prefer FPS over resolution I'm not playing in 4k it's only 2K that I'm using I can almost guarantee a big reason for this is the engine that is still the goddamn creation engine which is a barely rubber banded and renamed version of the game Brio engine they used in freaking Morrowind you wanted to know why we still have bugs from Elder Scrolls 3 well that's why I'm an I.T engineer and I can guarantee you there is nobody at Bethesda that understands what the engine does at its lowest level that's why as our game gets progressively more buggy janky and unoptimized as time passes because the engine cannot be optimized for modern systems that's also why planets are not fully rendered which is not actually a problem because like I said they are completely empty and instead the game generates up to 4 chunks per Planet what Bethesda should have done is change the engine completely a decade ago on the audio front there has definitely been an effort made on the voice acting credit what credit is you and Bethesda is doing this thing again of putting known actors in the game in this case process finally mastered the rules of acquisition and helps the big ship Manufacturing Company also leave modern Star Trek in the trash where it belongs then go watch DS9 they also got Adam Jensen in the game even though they fed him absolute garbage line I love the guy's voice but there is only so much he can do and sadly like many Science Fiction actors he's been typecasted hard the music on the other end is extremely Jeremy souled the legendary composer of Morrowind Oblivion Skyrim has left the company and it shows as there is not a single track in the entire game that I find even remotely memorable none on the ship side they kind of sound like you expect they should I suspect Bethesda is using actual rocket sound photo ships and you can hear the Machinery clicking in this retro futuristic way that you can hear in the first alien movie for example I really like it so credit where credit is due good job on that at least so against in space Also quite meaty especially when you get to the C-Class one C being the biggest ship though when you fight in third person I really wish they had an audio filter to make it sound like Battlestar Galactica and represent the lack of sound transmission in space on the handheld weapon though it's mostly terrible no matter the size or caliber of your gun none of them give you an impression of power even the super shotgun knockoff is a far crime of the Doom version and it's pretty much the only one with some INF to it I guess it would make sense considering the lack of recoil but it just doesn't sound good at all you continue on a theme none of the weapons look particularly good either if you allow me to No Doubt a little bit we have been refining guns for many hundreds of years and at this point we have pretty much figured out how to make them properly for example on the perfect assault rifle it is a select fire lightweight carbine with a touchable box magazine inline stock and a thin handout profile so that you can probably properly grab around the barrel that's why the l15 is so popular and that's why I designed my x95 handgun like this instead in this game they have brought all the monstrosities from Fallout one of the first game you pick up the Maelstrom has a breathing tube running alongside the receiver and the granddaughter has ruined everything that was good about the P90 they try to have some others weapon like the as Val which remained fairly unlisted or the AK-47 which for some reason has its original wooden furniture but also got raped with a Macbook plastic handguard on top of it you can also find a couple versions of the 1911 but for some reason the designer modeled the safety with a hole in the detent and the safety is also too long then proceeded to put blind holes where set the tent should have been so basic laser rifle of the game is also a straight ball from The Institute rifle from Fallout 4 what makes even less sense to me and that's also why I know that they didn't think about their Universe very much is that a bunch of guns are using caseless ammunition now strictly speaking we already know how to make zoos look up the hkg 11 and it's a 473 by 33 ammunition but one of the big issues is that in conventional ammunition the brass takes out a good amount of the heat in space where there is low atmosphere to cool your gun or exchange temperature with no grass to mitigate the transfer your weapon is going to melt itself stupid fast if Bethesda had sought for even a second they would have gone to the gold standard of retro futurism the aliens movies armor kind of like the gun are pretty universally ugly and make no sense in universe or reality as I pointed out in the gameplay area there is little to no ablative armor on most of them and a punctual wound in many environment would have meant either an instant or extraordinarily painful death making me wonder why armor or suit Integrity are not features the one exception to that aguiyama rule is the islamist faction that has a very geigerous design for its suits these probably because I'm an aliens fan I actually like even though the styling and design of their guns makes absolutely no sense considering what the suit looks like but at this point I'm not expecting anything from Bethesda on the character side they all seem very plasticky and they died outside of the main cast it's very very hard to estimate the age of moose characters as they seem to fall either in the well over 60 or impossible to tell categories the closing has some fairly good texture effects however the material choices are questionable at best for example the science outfits are clearly using Home Depot tubs for sleeves and the Design of Everyday clothes is just hideous Starfield is a case study on how to not design your everyday clothing where they do sex for example is how to do it properly it's even more painful when you know Adam Jensen is in the game amongst your companion I would say the only one with an interesting design and definitely the only attractive One turns out to be the islamist with some dark closing and the relief effect that once again is reminding me of Adam Jensen's coat quite like the ship's design though from the point of view of an engineer there is a lot that actually makes sense with a very retrofuturistic look to them I said it makes sense because there is a lot of analog controls instead of touch screens everywhere if you are in space potentially light years away from supplies and repair Crews it would be extremely inconvenient to have to replace an entire panel just because you spilled some coffee on the touchscreen if you have a mechanical switch it does not care as much you also have different ship manufacturers and they look fairly distinctive from each other even though these the strut Eckland is a little bit too close to demos for my taste now let's get on the most painful part and also the one that they have up every single time after more weight the right thing first off every single questline is criminally short people have been spin running Skyrim main quest in less than 30 minutes I think the record is 22 and a half or something like that I'm expecting that this time is going to be easily done in under 20. and honestly you won't be missing much there has been an effort made to try and create some better quote-unquote in-gap cinematics so to speak but considering I've seen a few of them and then they suddenly disappear I have the distinct feelings they started doing it before realizing their damaging scripting is a nightmare to use and the in turn probably just hanging himself and I'm not kidding by the way in the days of Oblivion I wanted to make a mod and use the scripting language in order to do some level of in-game cinematics I completely gave up when I saw the nightmare that this language was not that the effort would have really worked anyway because the writing is universally Dreadful and relies almost entirely on plagiarizing battleworks really really badly just like in Skyrim you have multiple factions that are antagonistic to each other and at the moment kind of in the cold war after a allegedly big war which does not really work because one of the factions the United Colonies usually called UC and reminding me strongly of the galactic acetyl colonies has an obvious and overwhelming advantage in both Tech and population while the freestyle Collective a disjointed or west faction in the west blacks attack and people to be relevant in any way the last one house Varun the settled system islamist as I like to call them are isolationists and I have simply disappeared with nobody knowing where the home planet even is you can join the first two for a quick questline while the last one is pretty much just engaging in jihad's welder systems so you see it's supposed to be a Highland Republic of sorts where citizenship being earned as in the right to vote but after raising my interest and doing a fairly solid intro in the museum presentation I got extremely disappointed when Bethesda showed that it understood about as much about Starship Trooper as voyavan did probably you should have expected that one to be honest the freestyle Collective questline on the other end is mostly about fighting gangs and really playing as an old west faction they're pretty much trying to be the Firefly experience finally there is a pirate faction the Crimson feet with a relatively well acted and written pirate lord but that's just the one character in a questline that just involves finding a treasure to pay for the fleet to become a major player alternatively you can play as an undercover UC agent to get the treasure for the other side which is what I went to is because I'm a Boy Scout and also none of the other characters are even likable in the Crimson feet regardless of what questline you pick and by pick I mean in what order you do them you will never really affect the state of the settled system and the game will just like Skyrim just have NPC make a mention here and there about your accomplishments now and you have probably seen it already online there is a really really big problem about diversity and inclusion constantly being left right and center and breaks immersion all the time beyond the fact that it has been hundreds of years since Humanity left Earth in a hurry in that game meaning the overwhelming majority of skps should have been whites and Asians because believe it or not South America and Africa are not exactly known for the shrine for the thriving science and space programs but Regional accents like Spanish French British Russian Etc should absolutely not be a thing anymore especially when you consider the highly populated settlements are very few and far between I'm sure there's going to be some patenting more on somewhere going oh but these accents are not really Russian French Etc they're just representing the new one uh no you are a because they are referred to as French Russian British Etc but in this game it gets even worse because it seems that everybody is a minority of some kind to the point of absolute absurdity for example one of your consolation co-workers Vladimir is supposed to be a Russian so when you go to meet him you would expect some loon current type right right ah gotta pass the hours on the star station somehow and the Iron's always been good to me this is one of the most egregious example but there are others like Madame sauvage a real dark black woman pretending to be from an old French family and Nexus will probably ban it as well but there really needs to be an anti-dei mod anyway now that you have the general impression I'm going to go into more details which means spoilers so if you don't want any of these good right here are we done let's get in so let's start with the main quest the core of it is after you recover a mysterious artifact we are already going for originality here you get a vision of distorted space with strange music and I immediately went huh You're Gonna butcher 2001 Space Odessa aren't here so after your Chinese supervisor and totally not some with were recover your unconscious body you receive a visit from the buyer of the artifact who incidentally got followed by pirate to give you your Combat tutorial he'll give you his ship and annoying trying to be quickly robot and you head to space eventually reaching the lodge to meet the rest of your new colleagues all of which are very ambiguous usefulness except for your money man quark it's very quickly revealed you are now on a galactic or at least a tiny portion you're in Fetch quest for all of the pieces of the mystical McGuffin which is totally not the 2001 model is because this one is a bunch of rotating circles so as you keep going and collecting artifacts you eventually reach hidden temples so he learned that they are often in plant view where you land and an easily triangulated position from the jamming signal they emit because Bethesda writing style is to assume players are absolute brain dead morons and what do you go to the temple for you ask well to get your Dragonborn power which are such a massive downgrade from Skyrim I only use the one for regenerating endurance the entire game I'm not kidding I tested each of these once and never again eventually you encounter mysterious ships and enemies eventually revealed to be starborn could it be aliens coming from the deepest depths of space well no turns out it's just some humans who completed the monu the model is before you in their universe and are now in the never-ending game of Highlander to repeat the process of gathering artifacts endlessly across the Multiverse with minute variation for maybe possibly get rewarded with something 2001 Space Odyssey was weird but to me this is just blatant plagiarism with added comic book cringe spazzled on top of it nobody really seems to really know what the end game truly is nobody really seems to know what the end game truly is which I'm sure some thought apologies would make five hour video essay on but really as a Quran could reward to the main quest line it is about becoming stubborn yourself and entering this game of Highlander for yourself which why exactly would I even want to do that from other game shows this is a denseless bloodbath between Cosmic Horrors essentially and you essentially offered to become one of that when you have a literal Galaxy to explore the game goes really heavy in telling you oh this is the ultimate reward for an explorer to which I go why one of the big reasons I want to explore and find out for myself is because I am human it is my nature literally in real life if there was an effort to actually colonize Mars I'm signing up immediately you have become some Cosmic horror to become one with the universe by definition I'm not exploring and since I'm Immortal there is absolutely no value in my hardship because I can just keep going forever and ever until it finally works the motto is To the Stars through hardship I find it quite incredible that this game can plagiarize 2001 Space Odyssey and be so pedantic about exploration and then proceed to give you an ending that nullifies every notion of exploration in all real that easy justification for this ridiculous ending is to turn you into a cosmic monstrosity for New Game Plus and giving you a garbage ship with completely uninspired interior design for the other Quest like I said before we have a infiltration of a pirate group or becoming a pirate revolving around the treasure hunt taking you across a handful of system and culminating with the exploration of a derelict which was disabled by em field for over 100 years but with security Bots completely unaffected followed by The Siege on the Pirate Space Station first in space with some allies and against giant laser batteries the biggest dip in performance that I got the entire game and then finally on the space station itself where you have the option of conducing the pirate king to come quietly which makes no sense for his character like I said before it's not very interesting and the pirate kick steals the show for most of this questline making me really wish that there was a better written more compelling story for the UC questline it's mostly about the threat of a species called tehromov because xenomorph was taken I presume and the game tries really hard to present them as some kind of big threat like xx21 species but it really is not that intimidating they do very little damage in melee very little at range they're just big loud bullet sponges that don't even have the Good Taste of building hives or napping colonists to incubate yongs in eventually you discover that the attacks using this terrible most were orchestrated by megalomaniac who was supposed to have been executed for his War crime in the previous war as you work with his female clone he calls daughter because Todd Howard does not understand about biology anyway turns out the terror moves are released the adult form of the hit features past you have been finding everywhere and you have two ways of solving the problem one using a natural predator a solution relatively slow but actually safe or two genetically engineer a lethal microbe that might wipe them out but might also pass on to other animal species including humans now because I'm not an idiot and as an engineer I understood extremely well the concept of safety and risk and you know lawsuits I went for the natural predator solution the objectively correct solution you get a reward either way but and I'm sure this is not ironic considering Force diversity insertion because Bethesda writers are such insufferable Sarah one of the companion NPCs after I explained the reasoning to her says she wish I had went for the microbe because it was and I'm not kidding safe and effective and wished I just trusted the science well I'm disappointed that you didn't trust the science [Music] that is a last quest line I completed before I closed the game and after almost 100 hours of really tedious busy work it's extremely unlikely I will boot it up again so in conclusion we have the laziest game Bethesda has ever outputted and I would remind you the last newish game that I had released Fallout 4 command in 2015 eight years ago we have a game with far less content across the world with all features severely downgraded or removed with the worst writing of any game they have ever outputted with loads of bugs including Quest breaking ones that requires the use of console commands that was the first time in the Bethesda game completely forgettable music and the odd and somehow still has the absolute audacity to try and lecture the audience there is no amount of mods that can excuse this level of trash or fix that lack of basic content do not buy this game it is pure unadultered trash if you want a good Sci-Fi experience get star sector and install mods that's what I'm gonna do to watch the taste of that garbage out foreign
