Man, I'm really considering dropping PT and going to Reaper. Is there any drawback without using the word "industry standard" in the response? lol

Great feature, great video but the voice over is Tim Vine in this sketch https://youtu.be/zfVLTKktt3A

That feature alone is almost worth the price.

Pretty cool, but uh... Not sure about spectral peaks using this color pallette. https://i.imgur.com/o6HxmLJ.png

The ROYGBIV gradient should not wrap around like that. In that screenshot, you couldn't tell the difference between very high frequency peaks and very low frequency peaks. I know you can drag it, but this screenshot from the video shows this as the default position.

Would love to see Reaper get more of a share of the industry. I use ProTools, at work because it’s the studio’s system, and Reaper at home because it’s so much more intuitive and user friendly.

I love those reaper videos by Kenny.

whoa, this is huge. Spectral view > waveform 99% of the time for me. So much more information available at a glance! This makes me want to switch to Reaper.

[Music] hi I'm Kenny Choi welcome to another one of my tutorials in this video I'm going to show you spectral editing in Reaper now just to review we can view our waveforms in a few different ways sitted normal we can go to the options menu and go down here to Peaks display mode change it from normal to spectral Peaks or spectrograph change it in this dialogue down here Peaks display settings looks like this we can open it in a View menu spice settings if we switch it special peaks different colors for different frequencies making it easy to see the high frequencies against the low ones we could tweak it I'm moving this around adjust the opacity to other things but we could also see it as a spectrogram frequencies separated as the highs and the lows and we can move it around frequency mugger if Mick focus on different frequencies just the curve of those colors or the contrast or the brightness and we can shift the colors right here just by dragging them around put it back we could double-click any of them or we could right-click and reset them to the force if you want to see these more clearly or you want to edit them you're probably going to want to work on one track at a time so you're not going to need to see all of your waveforms I spectrograms so we could do this a different way put this back to Peaks let's use a track we want to work on vocal up here make it bigger let's select it and then right-click it and go down here to spectral edits over here we could choose show spectrogram spectrogram just on this item so once again we could tweak it with the colors frequency bug rhythmic serve the contrast and the brightness now what's the purpose of this what's say you want to edit certain sounds that only appear at certain frequencies maybe the click of a bass track the s sound on a vocal or some p-pop or even a squeak on an acoustic guitar we can focus on those frequencies and just edit those instead of the full frequency audio so let's do that with this vocal put this back to normal sound on this focal which is piece over here in Seoul and this song for allowed it right here on song and this song fill out the S is jumping out let's put this back to spectrogram we can see right here the energy on this section is up here as opposed to down here for the other notes so it's tweaked the fruit logarithmic right here separates the ass from these notes so you can focus on it a little bit easier adjust our curve everything we're doing right here isn't affecting the sound it's just affecting what we see so you can see more clearly what we're working on to the contrast sticks out the brightness just the color so we can really see vs sound now let's try to edit the s sound a bit so it's not as prominent you can do that but so action right here right clicking respect you edits and choose add special edit to item what's it escape to create a time selection and it created this little box right here can edit just a section now right now this is full frequency we just want to work on this section right here high frequency s sound not the entire thing so we can make this box smaller top right here see the cursor changes and pulling it down in the bottom or go to the corner see how that cursor changes and change the size of our box right from here make it smaller here and here so just focused on this s sound and to make sure let's bring the volume down this knob right here this is a game which the section spring roll way down let's hear and this song fell out and this song fell out just pulls at the top end for the S section for that spot a bit too drastic let's put it back by double-clicking it let's bring it down just a bit five dB now you should know that the preview display we're seeing now where the colors are changing it's just a preview the actual audio render might look a bit different so if you want to be more accurate you can glue this audio to see that result let me could undo it so you go back to editing now it's here and this song fell out and this song fell that's a lot better now if we right-click this box we can change the FFT size we can go smaller or larger than the default of 1024 points small ref of T equals lower frequency resolution and high temporal resolution larger f of T equals more frequency resolution and less temporal resolution and more pre echo or smearing so play around with these and see which works best for you right here to control the fading in and fading out of the edit let's pull the Solway down the game so you can see the effect of these two knobs for bring this one up fades in and fades out the effect in this case a volume change so it's a smoother transition and if we use the next knob it's a frequency fate feeding the top and the bottom so again it's a bit transition move us around focus in section bring the vine back up slowly bring it down see the colors change so the esses don't stick out as much spree down Phoebe now it's here and this song fell out and this song fell out before right click and bypass it and this song fell out and after and this song fair loud in a minute sounds a lot better besides making a square around this frequency we can also draw the shape we want to work with if I hold down control on the PC or command to the Mac and go up here to the corner you change it to a pencil tool so you could draw the shape you want to use on the top and the bottom or if you want to delete that drawing alternate PC or option on the Mac turns to an X you could do eet which is true put it back to square change of shape drag it around to different sections and these knobs down here they allow us to add a compressor or noise gate this is probably going to be used on bigger sections let's say we zoom out work in a whole section this is long want to compress we could be the ratio up bring the compression threshold down press so frequency's as it's playing or he's back we use these two knobs as a noise gate to bring this up and it creates these black sections where the frequency is too low so to get out those frequencies but for the most part I usually just use the game and readjust the fade ins and outs left and right in the top and bottom best things about this copy this to the sections like we're over here is it F sound and this song fell out duplicate this by holding on control on the PC or command on the Mac and moving it over to here besides it this side this side so it makes more sense for this edit you can readjust it to bring down the F sound it's just working on that frequency and this song fell out it'd be too much and this song fell out in a minute flat I thought better in bypass I'm both of them and this song fell out it's a bit too peaky put it back and it just reduces these two frequencies in these two sections and there's song feral out in them so go for the rest of the song duplicating them to other sections the thing I want to show you if we go over here to the first line is a peanuts popping out found some words on a pail wide on the word tail birds on a pail wide page right over here but zoom in this sticks out the colors like their brightness first that's pretty good right over here is that P sound with too much low-end information birds on a pale wide Birds on a pale wide so we can fix that with special edit e so swept it again right click special editing to edit to item now creates it right here we can redraw this right here just for the section over here if we bring it down it's on a pale vibe to our clearer let's fade it in a bit on each side top and bottom turns on a pale wide pic it's a lot better before birds on a pail wide hit @p as well will ain't birds on a pail wipe and then after Birds on a pale wipe a lot clearer birds on a pail wipe it completely eliminated the P pop so just by working on the low-end but the whole frequency we can remove or reduce any weird sounds like s is P pops B sounds or any clicks or Rumble that we have in our audio I should also show you there's also a bunch of actions that go with special editing toggle them on and off show them the selected items and even adding spectral edit to an item so we can a keystrokes to any of these so you could trigger those actions a lot quicker so that's pretty much it that's spectral editing in reaper hope you learn something hope you can use it and I'll see you next time Thanks [Music] Oh
