hi i'm kenny joya welcome to another one of my tutorials in this video i'm going to show you automatic gain or vocal riding in reaper [Music] so a project in front of me here and i want to ride a vocal right here automatically by creating an envelope based on its level or its game and we could do that with the loudness meter plugin so let's go to the track effects on the vocal and let's add that plugin double click we'll type in in the filter loudness and here's the loudness meter plugging double click it and we already have a compressor and eq on the vocal so we're going to put this before so it's not reflecting any compression or eq we're adding then we'll go down over here to this button and turn on the option output loudness values as automation this is going to write envelopes based on the volume of the vocal we'll turn it on and we can close this plugin so now if we go into right mode on this track right here it's going to write many different envelopes based on our waveform or the vocals volume but instead of writing all of them let's change a preference go up here to the options menu and choose preferences then we'll scroll down under editing behavior and choose automation there's an option right here it's going to automatically add envelopes when we tweak our parameters this is on by default and it's very useful but for this we should turn it off temporarily so now we can just write any envelopes we arm and i'm going to use the luff's momentary envelope which is visible and armed so it's only going to write that envelope let's switch this to right mode let's go back a little bit and if we play from here it's going to write this envelope based on the volume or the waveform of the vocal let's see getting ready for the weekend popping bubbles through the ceiling sure i [Music] is [Music] [Music] but they [Music] that's good enough for now normally you'd play back and write the whole song so let's switch this to read mode it's going to play back our envelope now we want to use this envelope as a volume envelope so zoom out and first change this to an automation item alt on the pc option on the mac just draw from here over again normally we do the whole song then we're going to view our volume envelope by typing v and we're going to move this envelope to a volume envelope just drag it up and now we can delete this envelope although we just delete the meter as we don't need it anymore and that deletes the other envelope so now we just have this one that's going to control the volume of the vocal but right now it's backwards it's going up when the vocal is loud and going down when it's quiet we want the opposite so let's double click the automation item which opens up the automation item properties and if we change the amplitude to be negative it'll invert our points like this so let's go down to negative 100. now it's going up in the quiet parts and down in the wow parts which is what we want to control the level of the vocal let's bring up the bass line so it's right on the zero point let's also tweak the beginning it's going to start off too loud just redraw it like this and now it's here what we have and see it in the mixer getting ready for the weekend popping bubbles through the ceiling [Music] now you'll notice it's a bit late in making the volume changes so let's shift it so it'll make the adjustments earlier let's go over to this spot right here and we can shift the timing of the automation item alt on the pc option on the mac and make it a bit earlier so now it should be more in time getting ready for the weekend popping bubbles through the ceiling sure i got though but don't [Music] if you notice the movements are pretty drastic if we want to make it more subtle we can readjust the amplitude instead of minus 100 let's cut it in half to about minus 50 readjust our baseline to be on the line now the movements will be half as much it won't go as high or as low getting ready for the weekend popping bubbles through the ceiling [Music] i'm the one that's a lot better but we could still go even more to make it more subtle instead of minus 50 let's go to minus 25 once again cutting it in half readjust our baseline getting ready for the weekend popping bubbles through the ceiling sure i got though but don't need it cause all i want [Music] [Music] sounding pretty good it's automatically riding our vocal based on how loud or how soft it already is so it's a great start to automating our vocal or any track we're using we can still tweak this later like this vocal right here still a bit loud to me [Music] so i'll create a razor edit alt on the pc option on the mac and right drag like this and bring it down manually [Music] this breath might be too loud you bring it down the same way [Music] but personally i kind of like it loud so i'm going to bring it up even more [Music] so we could tweak this after the fact but it's a great starting point to automatically write our gain or create a vocal rider very quickly getting ready for the weekend popping bubbles through the ceiling sure i gotta go but don't need it cause all i want [Music] i'm about to and don't forget to turn this option back on when you're done if you want to save a bit of time you can do this instead just go to a browser and search reaper stash then we can choose it right here then on the stash website search automatic then you should find the automatic gain vocal writer plugin just choose it and then download it here then we'll go back to reaper go to the options menu and choose show reaper resource path which is going to take us to the folder where your reaper install is then we'll find the effects folder and open it up open our downloads folder and we should see the plugin right here then we can either drag it into here or put it in the analysis folder which is where the other plugin is then we can go back to reaper go to track effects on the vocal add a new effect and right click down here and rescan for new plugins then we'll search automatic and the plugin we just installed should show up double click it and let's put it first and now this is the only plugin we need just showing the lufs momentary [Music] and this function is already on it's just going to output this one meter so just by putting it on the track we can put the track into right mode and it's going to write just the envelope or automation we need getting ready for the weekend popping bubbles through the ceiling sure i gotta go but don't need it cause all i want is your healing your healing so now we have the envelope we could turn it into an automation item create a volume envelope move it there delete the meter plug-in because we don't need it anymore double-click the automation item change the amplitude to negative adjust the baseline redraw the beginning and shift the whole thing earlier and we're good to go getting ready for the weekend popping bubbles through the ceiling [Music] it's just a quicker way of doing the same thing so that's pretty much it that's the automatic gain or vocal riding in reaper i hope you learned something hope you could use it and i'll see you next time thanks [Music] bingo boys let's go [Music] ah
