okay how you doing I'm Kenny Joya welcome to another one of my tutorials in this tutorial I'm going to show you how to get rid of unwanted background noise for dialogue and audio in Reaper now if you've watched any of my tutorials you'll notice that pretty quiet the dialogue doesn't have much background noise and that's because I've cleaned it up after the fact in my studio I have a power amp with two big fans on it I have my computer and also their overhead fan keeping the room cool all these things create background noise now if I leave that in it makes them noisy recording so by using noise reduction inside Reaper I clean that up after the fact so you don't hear any of that background noise so let me show you how it's done there are a few different versions here a normal version one with the air conditioner turned on one with some fan noise and some AC hum with a ground loop what's up with the normal one this is what I normally use when I'm recording with tutorials testing one two three testing one two three I'll turn up the noise make it easy to hear it's not terrible but it can definitely be cleaner now before we do this I should mention applying this technique shouldn't be done for all of you tracks especially not music tracks because it does affect the audio quality so I wouldn't clean up every track you record but it's great for dialogue or quiet sections of music that were accidentally recorded with too much background noise so here's how we do it one of the important things is to have a certain section with just the noise like right over here I'm going to want to loop that so if we turn it on down here and make a time selection we could loop just that noise now we're going to add a plug-in called reefer which comes with Reaper choose the reaper plugins and choose reefer and here's the plugin we're going to use now this plug-in does more than noise reduction but in this video I'm going to focus on this particular use reducing background noise so under the mode we're going to change this instead of using EQ gate or compressor we're going to subtract so we can subtract the noise then under the edit mode we'll switch it to precise and the size we're going to change to 1024 this is the setting that I found works really well but feel free to experiment with the size then we want to reset over here chooses checkbox automatically build noise profile we're going to turn this on when we're looping just the noise turn this on and if we play it it's going to build a noise profile of the specific noise in this piece of dialogue hit play and it captures it hit stop turn this off and now we can adjust this to reduce the noise without affecting the sound quality too much if we make it too low we still hear the noise but if we make it too high it's going to affect the audio I'll show you go back over here it sounds robotic so let's bring it down now to adjust this we can use command on Mac or ctrl on PC and just bring it up and down two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three right about there feels good it reduces the noise but doesn't affect the sound quality testing one two three testing one two three before testing one two three testing one two three it's pretty noisy now let's try track that's a bit more challenging over here I have some pretty loud air-conditioner noise what's here testing one two three testing one two three that's pretty loud it almost makes the track unusable let's give it a shot let's make a time selection of just the noise and let's build a noise profile turn on a plugin choose refer switch this to subtract this one too precise 10:24 reset it the profile but before we do that let's save this as a preset right here we'll call it noise reduction that'll make it a bit quicker in the future to bring up this setting let's choose automatically build noise profile and build the noise profile based on the air conditioner that we left turned on turn this off let's adjust it let's hear it over here testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three notice it's not perfect but it's a lot better if we bring this up to high testing one two three testing one two three it affects the voice so if to choose a setting that reduces the most amount of noise without affecting the voice or the dialogue testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three but when the noise is this loud it is a compromised testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three that's pretty good before testing one two three testing one two three that's pretty bad after testing one two three testing one two three it's not perfect but it's a lot better now let's try it some fair noise I left a really big fan turned on and recorded this dialogue testing one two three testing one two three once again luckily we have a piece we could isolate the noise right over here you which they had the plugin but I'm going to choose the preset that we saved and build a noise profile turn this off let's go here testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three before testing one two three testing one two three and after testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three it's a lot better and then finally we have a AC home with a ground loop see what that sounds like testing one two three testing one two three that's pretty bad but let's see if we can salvage this dialogue with the reefer plugging turn on a preset let's highlight just the noise over here then turn this off testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three testing one two three before testing one two three testing one two three that's pretty terrible and then after testing one two three testing one two three it's not perfect but it is much better so anyway that's removing hum hiss fan noise any kind of background noise from dialogue or audio in Reaper using the refurb plug-in that comes with Reaper I hope you learn something I hope you can use it and I'll see you next time thanks you
