♪ I'm still all alone ♪ ♪ I see me and you at the prom ♪ (laughing) Welcome back to the channel guys, it's me, Joel, from Roomie Official. The one guy on YouTube that's in most need of a haircut. Check this out. It's all terrible. It's all awful. That's why I'm wearing the hat. It's the worst. Anyway, today I have a very interesting video. There's a bunch of compilation videos out there on the Interwebs talking about how pop songs, or at least specific pop songs, sound exactly the same. And today I thought that we would dive into that a little bit and see what's actually similar. And I find that often these compilations also have a bunch of duds that are not actually similar at all. So I'm gonna kind of import it into the music program or play it on the keyboard or whatever. So yeah, let's get started. Pop songs that sound exactly the same. Let's go. ♪ She loves control ♪ ♪ She wants it her way ♪ ♪ And there's no way she'll ever stay unless you give it up ♪ ♪ I've lost control ♪ ♪ I paddle, but you're strong ♪ ♪ But I gotta trust your flow ♪ Hmm. What do you guys think? Was that similar? It was definitely the world control and they were kind of like on the same note. But that's the most basic note is the root's of the key. But yeah, let's see if there's anything else that's similar. Let's import it into the music program and match it up and see how it sounds. So now I'm gonna match these up perfectly and get them in the same key and everything. And we're gonna see what are the chords, what are the melodies. What's different? I mean, you can kind of hear that if you listen to it over and over. But I wanna make it perfectly clear by doing it this way. Okay, so here we have 'em and there's a couple things that stand out immediately. I've synced these up to the same tempo and everything. So these start at totally different pieces. They start at totally different times on the beat. So we got Ariana's song, starts quite a bit earlier in the bar. (rhythmical beat) ♪ She loves control ♪ ♪ She wants it her way ♪ Then you have Sia's version, and that starts like exactly before the beat. (rhythmical beat) ♪ I've lost control ♪ Three, four. (singing) I've lost control versus three, I lost control. I mean, there's a similarity but I don't think that they knew. Or if they knew, it was like subconsciously, right? Because it is the same key and that's the spooky part. They're saying like, she loves control. ♪ She loves control ♪ ♪ She wants it her way ♪ ♪ I've lost control ♪ ♪ I paddle, but you're too strong ♪ But yeah, the following phrases are totally different and everything. The worst thing that could of happened here was that the songwriters for the Camila Cabello song were like, oh, we like how this sounds in this Sia song. We'll take that but we'll switch it up a little bit. What usually happens with these things though is like, oh maybe they heard what key it was in. And subconsciously remembered the other song by Sia. So therefore they just did it without it even realizing that they were quotation marks stealing. It's not even close at the end. The lyrics are different, their rhythm is different. Everything's different. But I can get why people think it's a little bit similar. Next. Oh, baby ♪ Oh, baby ♪ ♪ My baby ♪ ♪ Oh, baby ♪ ♪ Baby I ♪ ♪ Oh, baby ♪ ♪ Oh, baby ♪ ♪ Come give it to me my baby ♪ ♪ But keep it ♪ I mean (laughs) this compilation seems to be going a lot on lyrics which is interesting. (singing) Oh, baby, oh. So she starts on (voice changer effect) the root note of a minor key. And yes, the rhythm is the same on this actually. And you know that Ariana Grande was very inspired by Mariah Carey. Like she sings that one whistle note song that Mariah Care does. (singing whistle note) Just like a show off number and everything. My guess will be that some songwriter was again like, oh yeah, we're using Mariah Carey as a reference but it's not very close. It's not a copy. They don't sound exactly the same as the title says. But I can see the similarities and it might be on purpose. It's not that close, really. Its just how pop song writing works. ♪ Oh, baby ♪ Okay, so in a minor, which is a very easy key for me to play on piano, the Ariana Grande song is (singing) oh, baby, oh, baby. In comparison, Mariah Carey's melody is (singing) oh, baby, oh, baby. Which yes, it's similar. But it's definitely not exactly the same. Next. ♪ You got that nine to five ♪ ♪ But baby so do I ♪ ♪ So don't be thinking I'll be home and making apple pies ♪ ♪ I never learned to cook ♪ ♪ But I can ♪ ♪ My name is Olly, nice to meet you, can I tell you baby ♪ ♪ Look around there's a whole lot of pretty ladies ♪ ♪ But none like you, you shine so bright ♪ Okay, this one I think misses the point which is that both these songs just basically copy old like rock and roll music, right? But it seems like one of those typical duh dit duh dit duh dit duh dit duh dit duh dit duh dit duh. So basic, so many people have done it. Next. But let's see if it's the same. ♪ Your smile could light up New York City after dark ♪ If there's anything copyrightable about that first song it's a little thing that would go down in the end. ♪ You made my heartbreak and that ♪ Because it's a little bit distinctive and it's not stolen. But yeah, they sound very similar. But it's also basic. But it's similar. But it's basic. But it's similar. Ah! One of the sounds that always bothered me with how similar it was was Icona Pop had a song a while back. Like it's a really old one. And it's called "I Really Don't Care" and the other song starts with I don't care. It bothered me, okay, when it came out. And the worst part is it's a really good song. The Demi Lovato song, the copy, is a really good song. And I still like it. And I still like the original too. So it's working on me as well. But I hope the other guy got some of the money for that. Just gotta see if there was anything about this. Mad cobra. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's credited that.
