you are such a genuine Jim thank you for clicking on my video I'm Brooke McKenna but today's case is the Gucci murder how a fashion company started with death now the history of things normalized in modern times often shows a dark path to reach that point what does it take to create a successful business how much of your soul must be lost to earn billions of dollars and how did all these scandals only drive the sales higher how many of you are now looking at your Gucci items or possibly the Gucci store if you cannot afford them like me much differently now I also want to give a huge thanks to the sources that helped me put together this episode and they are real stories power privilege and justice the Irish Times The Guardian The Telegraph and Forbes by the way is my absolute passion to tell these stories and I mean no harm or disrespect when I do so so if it's something that you would like to support me in doing all you have to do is make sure you were subscribed with the post notification bell on give this video a thumbs up and leave a nice comment down below now let's get back to the story so it was 1995 in Italy and the Gucci family lived in Milan this was Patricia and Mauricio and they had two daughters named allegra and Alessandra and they were the infamous Gucci family that everybody knew and they were also involved with the brand that we all know today now this was the high fashion brand with the GG symbols and they were expensive items that celebrities wished for and that influencers today will spend their money and treat theirselves on or even be gifted sometimes these very expensive items and this is just such a luxury for people but a lot of people don't know the dark history behind that brand and the fact that these generations of the Gucci family were not angels especially not that there generation because the first generation the founder of gucci was in fact a creative soul and really worked this business and created it from the ground up however as he passed away and it went through his family it really seemed to just go downhill quickly they would do everything possible to lose what he had created Mauricio and Patricia were basically is said to be meant for each other they were very different but they had met at a party and Mauricio actually asked his friend who the beautiful girl was in the red dress who looks like Elizabeth Taylor so he obviously had a huge crush on her from the very beginning and he had come from a long line of hard workers and entrepreneurs and his mother had actually died when he was 5 years old so his father was very protective over him while also being in charge of such a big company and he expected his son to follow along his footsteps but you know this was a very gradual thing to let him be involved in the actual business part of it but he did kind of have a more sheltered life so it caused him to be a bit more shy whereas Patricia on the other hand had grown up with a waitress as a mother and a trucking Baron as a father and she was also very social with having to meet a whole bunch of new people and having to put herself in situations where she was with the elite class rather than just being born into it she kind of had to finagle her way into these situations so even as a kid she was a very social butterfly and this kind of helped them being together because that's something that Mauricio lacked and his father knew that that would not be helpful in business for him to be the shy meek shell and now Patricia was really showing him how to be more social and to integrate Gucci into the lives of all of these celebrities that would purchase it and that would basically market it to other people Patricia's father did make a decent amount of money well above you know middle-class and he would often buy her anything she wanted mink coats fast cars from a young age she was really spoiled so after they met they got married and they were both about 24 at this age and they really had to decide not to care about their family's opinions to go forward with this wedding because they felt free together like they were a team and they decided to go against what everybody else was telling them to do or not to do and they had two girls together like I said allegra and Alessandra and they were doing well at least for a while but on March 27th of that year the family's legacy would be surrounded and murder and the tabloids would go crazy at this news because the Gucci's name was about to be changed forever this was the fact that Marissa was walking to his office building one morning this morning at 8:30 and he would suddenly be shot four times now once was in the head that killed him instantly and he was only 46 years old the problem was this person had come up behind him and Mauricio had no idea that this person was even there when he was shot to death he had no way to even fight back the problem was his business made it likely that he motive was some sort of revenge because money does make people do awful things and so with a company that made them multi millionaires they knew that there were lots of people that could be a possible killer they just had to find out which one it was the police were called by another man who was at the scene of the crime with a bullet in his arm and he actually was a office building and janitor that had just happened to be there at the time and he said that Mauricio was carrying in magazines to this building and he was in such good spirits he even said good morning to him and as he was walking up the stage years this janitor saw a hand he said it was a beautiful clean hand pointing the gun at Maurizio and began to shoot and that he shot him three times and he kind of fell back down the stairs and that's when this man shot him in the head and then fled and of course this janitor ran over to see what was going on and that's when it this man has shot him twice as well thankfully only one bullet hit him but he ran over to Maurizio even bleeding himself and just kind of cradled his head as Maurizio passed away in his arms and he said that he thought it was a joke that the gun was being pointed to him and he wasn't sure he was even going to survive he said he remembered thinking that it was a shame that this is how he was going to die and he could actually picture the shooter he described him as a male in his 30s to 40s with black hair who was wearing a baseball cap as well as a jean jacket and this all happens in the middle of the day and broad daylight and this is something that didn't just happen every single day and the fact that it was just out in the open like this with no even concealment from the dark sky showed that this was someone who knew what they were doing but at the same time didn't because they had a whole bunch of witnesses that saw them run away and so that's when they got really confused because everyone got to this crime scene literally everyone the public reporters police kind of all at the same time because everyone knew the victim Mauricio Gucci and who he was and they wanted to have a look at the crime scene and so investigators who initially thought that this could be done by the Mafia due to the fact that it was a very quick kind of in and out sort of deal they also knew that the Mafia would have done it in a way where they could have never been seen so they kind of marked that option out and they realized they needed to be looking elsewhere for suspects Marisa was cousin Paolo Gucci that he believed it was because his cousin had debts to people and that he owed the money so that is why they took his life but to really tell you what happened here we're going to have to go backwards go into Maurizio's past in fact the whole Gucci family's past to really get an understanding for how it got to this point and this is back when Gucci itself was created so it was 1904 when Gucci Oh Gucci and yes that is his name that is for the GG symbol that's why you see that everywhere it's not just gucci gucci it's for Gucci Oh Gucci and he founded the company in Florence now he was actually working at London's savvy hotel when he saw an opportunity for a business plan and he was often dealing with all of the travelers luggage and they were often you know mismatched or they were just hard to carry hard to move around and he decided that if you could create trunks that were not only smart but practical they could really get a profit so with this he started making trunks out of leather and these were the type of trunks that could easily be removed from carriages and put back on them this is what they had to do at the time was to pull them on and off these carriages and it wasn't an easy task so he knew that he could get a lot of business if he made life simpler for everybody so he decided to start working back in Florence where he would open his first business or his first store I guess where he had leather factories and workers making all of these goods and he also had three sons which would help him as well as they got older and they would actually help him expand because he was just working in Italy and they decided that he needed to start a store in New York City because this is where a lot of the fashion the high fashion was sold and it would really expand the business now Gucci at the time had no idea how successful this would make his business and he almost pushed back and didn't want them to take get out of Italy and expanded any further he just liked you know his own stores but he did agree to this finally and so they did move it to New York where celebrities started to get a hold of it they were basically looked at as the most high fashion pieces of handbags and shoes that everybody wanted to get their hands on but as Gucci all got older and passed away Gucci was kept in the family and this would go to his sons but this is where the problems would start because two of those sons had sons themselves and that was Rudolph and Aldo and they had children however Rudolph had one child where Aldo had three so this now made it completely unequal and the share of the company that they owned meaning that Aldo technically had more Rudolph was not happy about this because he knew ultimately his side of the family even though they were all one big family but his side of the family had less and these were two brothers who had grown up in a business-oriented family and basically looked at the amount of money as their worth so this is where they began to bicker and you know there was a lot of Gucci family issues that was not just kept in the family the whole public knew about everything going on Rudolph's son was Maurizio whereas Aldo son was Giorgio Paolo and Roberto now Paolo started to realize something that was going wrong in the business when he was you know getting older and getting into it and he realized that the United States sales were doing really well however gucci was not seeing any of that money the actual company so he had to figure out where it was going missing and why they weren't making any profit from sales that were looking to have happened and so that is where he found that his father Aldo was actually using offshore accounts to basically avoid paying taxes and he was keeping all this money to himself and instead of his son because Aldo was his father instead of his son Paulo just ignoring this he actually took him to court and this had Aldo put in jail for a year in Florida they were now six Gucci men in charge of this company basically on the board and they hated sharing the power with one another I mean there were so many lawsuits that were filed against one another trying to basically kick them out of the business but nothing really worked because they had enough money to you know get themselves out of whatever trouble they were in and so there was even a time where a worker who worked basically at the offices that they did said that there was a whole bunch of Gucci handbags like $500 handbags scattered around the lawn because the Gucci's were upstairs having a fight and they were throwing the merchandise at each other this expensive merchandise just to basically attack one another how low even left a fight one time with a scar on his face because that's how aggressive they got it wasn't just verbal and then Mauricio Rudolph's only son would marry Patricia and Rodolphe hated this he said that Patricia was just using him for money even though she was well off on her own but said that they shouldn't get married that this was a huge mistake and he even told Mauricio that he would be kicked out of the family business if he did this but he decided Mauricio decided that he loved for sure and he wanted to marry her so he did and Patricia's father was actually the one to be very open about their marriage and said you know you can become a part of our family if your family is not going to accept you and we will pay for you to go to university or finish the university courses since your father cut you off from all the money so he was really supportive and that was really nice from a Rizzio but Rudolph was still trying to stop the marriage all the way up until the actual wedding when he decided he couldn't do anything and he just attended the wedding instead so a month later he actually called Maurizio and he said that he wanted him to come back to the family business he offered him an opportunity to get back involved again and this was because it could she was having some serious problems you see the business had started to sell to anybody and everybody who wanted to have a Gucci store and they were also marketing their merchandise as much less so this was causing so many more people to be able to get it it was much more accessible however they were losing profits and they were losing their name of being a luxury brand so they needed to remarket themselves or do something before their profits ultimately dropped and they would lose millions but even though Maurizio saw this as a chance to kind of revamp the entire company the rest of the Gucci's decided that that's not what they wanted at all and that they were fine because they were still making lots of money even if the merchandise was much less so for the next 10 years this is how it went slowly going downhill and they were bickering but they were getting along well enough to run the business however by 1983 Rudolph Maurizio his father would pass away and this would mean that everything would change because Maurizio would earn a 230 million pounds from his father which also meant that he owned 50% of this business one man owning 50% meant that even though Aldo and his three sons had a little bit more of a percentage of the company one man was much more of a threat who had more than these four members of the other side of the family and so of course they were angered about this they didn't want Maurizio to have that much power Maurizio really wouldn't do anything with this at first which is what they hoped he would do would just keep his head down and work and he did but then he started working harder and harder and realizing that he didn't want the same thing as his family this is when he kind of stopped coming home all the time and Patricia and their two daughters really weren't seeing him anymore Patricia was fighting with him as well as saying you're never here Mauricio really didn't care because he was done fighting done fighting with his family done fighting with his wife and he one day just told Patricia he was going on a business trip to Florence and he went and he kissed them goodbye and he never returned Patricia was said to find out by their family doctor and Patricia also said that after Mauricio his father's death he didn't act like he cared about anything or anyone and unlike the rest of his family this was very different for him he was normally a sweet soul who had empathy and cared about people but something changed after his father's death during this time is also when the Gucci's all started trying to get each other in trouble for tax evasion because they were all doing it in one way or another and so they were trying to see who could get the worst outcome by being turned in so it was between Mauricio between Paulo Aldo Giorgio Roberto they were all just trying to get each other in jail and so they were sending in different documents that showed with a Adani legally and people were you know going to arrest them however Mauricio actually knew that this was happening and he fled to his Villa for a while which was kind of a secluded area where he couldn't be found and like I said it wasn't just like this side of the family with Aldo and his kids were against Maurizio they were all against each other I mean all those kids were against him he was against his kids they just all bickered and wanted the power to themselves so badly and at this point 10 more years had gone by and Maurizio was done with all of this he decided to call an investment company called invest Corp and he hatched a plan with them they would be calling his other family members on the board of Gucci and getting them to basically sell their portion of the company all of these members were not just going to be giving up for nothing they would be getting a large amount of money as a settlement and they were to contact Paulo first and within no time Mauricio was the only Gucci now in charge of the Gucci company this is just how he wanted it Maurizio then hired Tom Ford who was just an upcoming fashion designer at this time and he created a whole new line of fashion pieces that were once again high-end these were to replace all of the lower end merchandise completely and to do so they had to get rid of a lot a lot of merchandise meaning that they lost around a hundred million pounds of money during this time and Mauricio himself lost millions and Mauricio even though he lost millions he still had a lot of his luxuries I mean he had a yacht he had different sports cars he was still living a lavish lifestyle he just simply had to budget because he wasn't getting any more of those millions and just yet and he had to budget who he gave his money to as well and this would create a huge problem that he didn't yet know he was creating now that is when this Investment Company actually fired Mauricio and gave him a settlement of a hundred and ninety million dollars which sounds insane for most people but for him that was petty change and he would spent that in no time so he was really struggling to find a new job now gucci was no longer in the hands of the gucci family and this might have just been the best thing to ever happen to the company now when Mauricio went to work to find a new way to make money he bought his brand new offices and that is where he was headed the day that he was murdered but this of course would definitely not be the best thing to happen to Mauricio and so the question was how did this all lead to murder well now that marizia was budgeting his millions of dollars we're no more millions were coming in he had to make more conscious decisions with his money which is something that he really never had to do before because he came from a long line of successful businessmen but he still had to pay his ex-wife you see Patricia and their two daughters we're still getting paid around this time and they were getting a monthly sum of around one hundred and fifty thousand pounds but it would also go on shopping sprees for around 300 pounds or 300,000 pounds excuse me 300 pounds is nothing to them 300 thousand pounds to just go and do some shopping sprees randomly but now their monthly checks were coming in for ninety thousand which is an incredible amount of money but not to them they were very angered by this and Patricia's anger was said to go even deeper than this because she was no longer the Gucci heiress that she believed she was meant to be that she was born to be because she believed because of her social skills that she taught Mauricio that she was responsible for the success of Gucci and the fact that all of the celebrities knew about it and wanted these products now she was just left in the dust with this petty change as what she believed and her two daughters that she was basically raising on her own and so investigators knew that the ex-wife of course should be a suspect but they didn't know how much of a story was behind all of it because it was quite the story it all began a few years prior when Patricia had gone into surgery for a tumor that was in her brain it ended up not being cancerous but she did have this surgery and the doctors allegedly had told Mauricio not to come because he was going in her she was going in for this surgery that was going to be very difficult and she needed to rest so they told him not to go in and he respected this and sent her flowers instead and upon seeing these flowers and seeing that he wasn't there she wrote in a diary one word Vendetta I'll read the definition on the screen if you don't know what that means over the next few years her hatred seemed to grow from her Rizzio they were already divorced and had been for like ten years but she still felt as though he owed her something and so at a party at one of her girls birthdays they would have a lawyer it was probably the dad of one of her friends or something like that but he was a lawyer and she walked up to him and she was basically asking him what would happen if she got rid of Mauricio and this lawyer didn't answer her so she wrote him a letter and sent it to him and he answered her saying to not talk like that ever again others were questioned who knew Patricia to see if they had any more information all of her staff would say that she in fact had asked them if they would kill for her if they knew anybody who would kill when she was told how much she was getting in the divorce which was that ninety thousand dollars a month she said that it was a mere plate of lentils and that's what she thought about that then she was even more angry when Mauricio got a new girlfriend who moved into an apartment with him and she feared that now this other woman would get his money as well as if they had kids that would just take away the money that her and her daughters could get Patricia couldn't even fathom this thought she said that he was basically throwing away this money the little the little he had into casino is an odds and ends that he was interested in and not saving any for them investigators also found that she had been writing an autobiography about the secrets of the family that she had once married into and these were not nice words she also had a cardio diary where she put her deepest darkest thoughts which is where they found the word Vendetta on the day of her surgery but they also read that she often referred to Mauricio even after the divorce as her husband she had never they come to terms with the fact that they were divorced she refused to call his girlfriend her name which was Paola and she instead called her that woman they found a word written the day of Maurizio's murder and this was paradoxes I think that's how you say it which means Hera dies investigators had a feeling that she was the killer and Paola had been asked if she believed that she had anyone who would have wanted to kill Marissa if she knew of anyone and the first person she named was in fact Patricia this was not just out of nowhere either were like in spite of an ex-wife it was actually because Patricia had kicked her out of the apartment she shared with Maurizio like a day after he was murdered served her with eviction papers because technically she owned part of his property due to the divorce and so Patricia kicked her out where she had been living so they could move in the only problem was there had been a male spotted the crime scene not a woman so who was this man and did they have any connection to Patricia well it was two years later and they still had no answers but by 1997 they would have a tip they would finally be called in they would say that all they needed to say was one name Gucci and they had everybody's attention this was a waiter saying that he had heard through the grapevine who had killed Marissa that he had heard from a local doorman at a hotel named Ivana Savioli but the man who killed Mauricio had bragged to Yvonne Oh about what he had done but now they needed to get a confession on tape of some sort so they fitted the man who called him with wires I had him go talk to Yvonne oh and that is when Ivana would tell them much more Ivana would say that he was contacted by a fortune teller named Pina who contacted him because he was known in the area as a petty theft and wanted to know if he would kill somebody he wouldn't but he called a pizza store owner who then went to a mechanic and this mechanic said that would do it Pina then told them that this job was for Patricia Gucci herself who was Tina's best friend and they were offering a three hundred and fifty thousand pounds to carry out this hit so after hearing all of this on January 31st investigators sped to the apartment where Patricia was now living where she had kicked out his new girlfriend and she opened the door around 4:00 a.m. that's when they asked her if she knew why they were there and she said that it was probably because of her husband's death and she still was not acknowledging that he was his ex Patricia then asked if they would wait a moment at her door as they were trying to arrest her she went back inside and she came back out wearing a full fur coat as well as gold jewelry and that is when she was taken away and her daughters who were now 18 and 14 were left there to watch their mother being arrested a year later Patricia and Pina were taken to trial and that has been Pina would begin to confess a little bit more and turn against her best friend because she said that Patricia had promised her a jail cell full of gold but she realized that didn't matter in jail Pina then said that Patricia basically could not imagine another woman taking her place as the Gucci heiress or lady Gucci and the fact that all of that power money and status would be ripped from her there was something unfathomable because it was things that she believes she earned now everyone in Italy was on top of this case and unfortunately that didn't do anything to Gucci sales like you'd think it would in fact Gucci was even more popular because everyone was talking about it but Patricia didn't go down without a fight in fact she started to say that it was insanity that her brain tumor surgery from years prior caused her to be incapable of planning this sort of thing this murder and that Pina did all of the planning and then black smelled her into giving them money to hire a hitman making it look like it was her doing Patricia said that Pina threatened to hurt her daughter's if she said anything and that's why she didn't so it's basically one woman's words against another until a witness came forward this was a man who claimed to be a getaway driver for the crime and said that he was confessing that he had gotten his money and he wanted nothing more to do with any of this he said he in fact was paid by Patricia herself so after seven hours of deliberation Patricia Pina of vano and a pizza man as well as the getaway driver who was a Razzie Oh Cecilia were all found guilty now Patricia and Orazio were given the most of 29 years then Pina was given 25 and Ivana was given 26 but what about the one who actually committed the murder this mechanic his name was found to be Benedetto Carillo and he got life Patricia and Maurizio's daughters allegra and Alessandra always believed that their mother was innocent in fact Allegro even started to study a law to try to get her mother out of jail during this time and Gucci stores allegedly put up handcuffs in all of their windows after the verdict was given to basically show their support of Lady Gucci being locked up in 2000 this case was appealed and was reduced to 26 years for Patricia's part Patricia was actually found at one point in her jail cell that year with a shoelace around her neck but she did survive and she was rescued but 11 years later she was actually given the opportunity to live in an open prison system where they had less of a watchful eye on them and they could also go and get employment but Patricia actually said that she wanted nothing to do with this even if it let her have more freedom because she had never worked a day in her life and she didn't want to this wouldn't change much though considering five years later it was now 2016 and she would released on good behavior after serving 18 years now the janitor from the office building who was shot with Maurizio that day actually says that he I mean he survived at all he healed but he says that he wakes up every day more grateful to be alive because of it because of what he went through but the bad thing is that he said he was a poor man who had to go back to the same job he had had he couldn't afford to get a new one so he is constantly triggered by anyone walking up to him whether it's an unfamiliar face whether it looks unfriendly anybody walking up to him during that job triggers him to have a panic attack and it's just the most heartbreaking thing to hear that that he had to stay in a place that was so toxic for him where he had such a traumatic experience and it was also said that after the trials he was awarded a hundred and forty two thousand pounds but he hasn't received any of it in 20 years he has actually said something that I think is quite a good point so I wanted to put it in here he said I'm not bitter but I do wonder if a rich person had been wounded in that doorway instead of me whether they'd have been treated with more respect which is heartbreaking that he realizes that that could be the reason why nobody seemed to care about him and just Iguchi now Maurizio's girlfriend at the time of his murder Paola said that she went through a really hard time after the murder because the tabloids were just out to get her they kept saying that she was a gold digger who was only with Maurizio for his money and she said that that's hilarious because she actually left a man who had more money to go to Maurizio who had less and was just continuing to have less because he didn't have a job because she loved him so the whole thing she said was complete nonsense but no one cared what she had to say she said that when they fell in love they realized that they were basically two halves of the same Apple Paola also said that Patricia would often stalk them and spy on them before she murdered him and she would call the apartment to threaten him all of the time and some of these recordings were actually shown at the trial one of them said you've reached the extreme limit of making yourself despised by your daughters who no longer want to see you to forget the trauma you are deformed outgrowth you were a painful appendix that all of us want to forget for you hell is yet to come pala said that she tried to get Maurizio to hire a bodyguard but he didn't believe Patricia would actually do something because they had kids together but obviously that wasn't true and pala actually went through the loss of her boyfriend and then five years later her son at Charlie took his life at sixteen years old and she never saw that coming and so she has been dealing with a lot of grief in her life but she says that she tries to be better from all of it and that she turned to art to cope and is quite a bubbly soul from the interviews that I've seen with her she's just she seems like a breath of fresh air who turned to the light and all of the times that she was in the dark and actually became the light herself now Patricia was actually interviewed in 2016 at her job where these interview were surprised her because no one would ever let her like no one close to her would let an interviewer in to talk to her however they just surprised her at her job which was at a jewelry firm and they sat down to talk with her and they asked her why she hired a hit man instead of just shooting him herself and she said that her eyesight isn't good and she was afraid she would miss get in other interviews she said that although it was a desire she had to kill Murillo that she wasn't actually going to act on it and it was something that every wife has thought of at one point or another she said that this is why Pina actually went and hired a hitman and then forced her to pay because she was talking about it all the time but didn't actually expect her to go through with it one of the very first things she did after getting out of jail was go on a shopping spree with him very little money she had he's definitely weren't luxury boutiques that she was used to but she did go shopping to get some clothes and she also wanted to go back to being a part of Gucci and working for them but and she said that they needed her because she was kuchi she was needed by all of them but this never happened her own daughters eventually cut her off financially which I'm not sure there's an incident that caused this or if they just realized that you know what their mother did do is wrong and their previous support was kind of taken back as they got older and realized more but they didn't even let her meet their kids which I think it says a lot but by 2017 Patricia would be doing great financially she would be given almost a million pounds a year from the Gucci's estate due to a previous agreements in the divorce she was also given 16 million pounds on top of that for the time that she had been in prison where she had missed her money however this was appealed and sent to the Italy Supreme Court I'm not sure if it is gone through and she's still about this money or not I couldn't find anything further but she said if I could see Maurizio again I would tell him that I love him because he is the person who has mattered most to me in life but when she was asked what she thought he would say back to her she said I think he'd say the feeling wasn't mutual now last year in 2019 it was actually announced that this whole case is going to be turned into a movie starring Lady Gaga as Patricia and I am so excited but Patricia Iguchi herself is not happy about this today Gucci is one of the most respected fashion brands and is on track to make at least 10 billion pounds in the next few years it was also named in Forbes world's most valuable brands list it is super close to being in the running against louis vuitton for world's largest luxury brand yet most have no idea of its dark past and the family who started at all so I hope you learned a little something and it was interesting to you as soon as I saw this case I really wanted to bring it to you I'm super interested in fashion and I don't necessarily go for the high brand's I'm more of a thrift er and secondhand items and you know if it's name brand second and that's great but I'm just not a spender I'm so sad to me that you know Gucci Gucci started this with the purest intentions and was such a brilliant idea and then slowly his family just killed it until they were no longer even a part of it thankfully you know Gucci is still in existence for Gucci Gucci but it's not run by his family and probably not running the same way he would want it to be but I guess you can't really control that so yeah make sure to give us a thumbs up if you want more like this also leave down below any more stories like this you want me to tell and that's it don't ever forget to speak up your voice is powerful enough and I love you to absolute pieces ok bye
