[Music] i've owned the submariner for five years now and i've learned so much both about the watch and myself in terms of being a watch enthusiast let's go back way back i bought this watch in 2016 and although it wasn't my first luxury buy it was the first to click with me kind of like um at the time i purchased these submariner retailed for 7 500 usd and most ads had them in stock ready in display to be bought still sports watches were relatively easy to buy shocking right but the more surprising thing is that the grey market value was under retail because there'll always be that one person that asked i paid around for mine i paid around i paid enough posted unworn with all of these stickers still in place and i still think i have a sticker somewhere on the clasp so being the first owner the watch was mint and unfortunately i was one of those guys who were afraid of damaging it i think this is somewhat common for a new collector and their first big boy purchase i babied it and hardly wore it around because the enjoyment i got out of keeping it pristine was enough for me at the time looking back at it now i think that mentality is then from the previous hobbies i was into it revolved around things that aren't meant to be used for example paintings you basically collect it for the sake of display and engaging in conversation watches on the other hand are works of art that also offer utility so the fact that i can now wear this piece of art opposed to merely admiring it on display was mind-blowing for the first time i was into a hobby where i could actually use the objects and even bring them outside which was again kind of like also being relatively new to high cost watches i thought these things were fragile and delicate which is so embarrassing because it's a rolex i did own sakos and other affordable timepieces for those rough occasions no i usually take everything off with those but it would be a lie to say that i didn't want to wear this sub more often that i did the big change happened after i watched a talking watches episode featuring morgan king the og of pym time gotta do justice for him so same time he says something along the lines of if you're not gonna wear it then what's the point life's too short have dessert first and from that moment i thought to myself i want some cake and i'm going to have it now every day until i die from malnutrition but the point is i wasn't experiencing the full potential what this watch had to offer or what this entire hobby had to offer after some much needed reasoning it was clear that this thing could take any beating just fine and it wasn't like it has some crazy lifestyle to begin with this would have been different if i had a delicate dress piece but since it was the sub i was able to relinquish the safe creme mentality which elevated my enjoyment level by a thousand fold i literally wore everywhere and by doing so it became more than another sub that was on display at the 80. no other sub could replace this one and sure it's not as shiny or as new as the one on display but those don't have the special x factor that this one now has i know this is cliche and somewhat obvious but i realized that the annoyance caused by scratches and other wear marks was nothing in comparison to the amount of fun i was having i was liberated from constantly thinking about condition which freed up my mind to think about the actual watch itself why am i attracted to it why is the braces so comfortable what similar features should i look for in future purchases to this day my watch buying process usually starts off with something i'm attracted to aesthetically and whether or not remains in my collection depends on whether i develop a zone attachment to it or not due to submariner i learned that naturally things that i buy don't stay all that long if i don't resonate with them beyond an aesthetic level and that this can only be achieved if i actually wear the damn thing i can't say for sure but i have a feeling that if this watch remained the safe queen then it would have eventually gotten sold and in the worst case i might have fallen out of this hobby entirely these days i don't wear myself as much as i used to not because i like it any less but simply due to the fact that i now have more options to choose from as i've picked them up throughout my enthusiast journey so to sub turn from a safe queen to an everyday watch to now view it as purely a reliable timepiece by that i mean if i don't know what the day ahead of me is going to be like i'll wear myself because i know it'll pretty much adapt to any situation from my experience it is one of the most versatile watches made not only based on looks but also its function time only no date which is all i need and prefer the symmetrical look a comfortable bracelet with glidelock to make quick adjustments as my wrist swells up throughout the day a dive bezel which i often repurpose as a timer for a superficial task and a water resistance that i'll never have to worry about can't forget about the sapphire crystal ceramic insert and 3130 movement which has been quite reliable it's like a multi-tool regardless of the task you'll have everything you need in a single package is it as sexy as a full-time ass kiss bolster lock with zerk inlays and fully etched hand rubbed damage still blade no but it's also not as functional as a leatherman so i've learned a lot through this watch but the main takeaway is that limiting my ability to wear watch to avoid wear marks is not worth it the enjoyment got out of wearing it everywhere anywhere at the cost of showing scratches and even dense is what i value the most gradual accumulation of well damage essentially something that i don't really care about all that much anymore after five years the honeymoon phase is definitely gone so i have a very practical sense of what the sub has to offer it's a damn good watch objectively speaking it has everything you need with nothing in excess which might be the reason why it's boring to a lot of people i think it's fair to say it's boringly useful thanks for listening to my story and hopefully this provided some useful insight if you're also an enthusiast going through the same dilemma as my earlier self and if you're considering getting the sub despite the difficulty in getting it these days it is worth it in my opinion that is but not great market prices don't overpay for this watch let me know down below do you find more enjoyment in prioritizing condition or from the wearing experience itself no slide is better than the other because in the end this is something that's unique to each individual thank you so much for watching if you enjoyed this video please
