[Music] cuz of my triumph Inga hey never scared cuz of my trust Inga let me push it just a bit farther if you don't mind but the storm is like why I said I'm not afraid because of the time I will bless the Lord at all times his praise shall continually be in my mouth my soul shall make her boast him the Lord the humble shall hear thereof and beat land o magnify the Lord with me let us exalt his name together for the Lord is good his mercy is everlasting and his truth endures to all generations Oh taste and see that the Lord is good blessed is the one who trusts in him if you're excited about who God is and what the Lord has done in your life this day won't you take some time now to thank God for his keeping power he's kept she sustains she blessed you never left you to God be the glory for the great things he has done what a joy it is to be in this place at this time to celebrate God who is the giver of every good and perfect gift and on this Sunday morning this fourth Sunday of the month of September we thank our God for bringing us together to worship Him in spirit and in truth to give it an esteemed pastor of this church my friend and beloved brother of many years I thank God for your pastor Reverend dr. Howard John Wesley and for his visionary leadership of people of God here at the Alfred Street Baptist god bless you sir last night I was able to claim that I was the person in the room who had known him the longest but as I looked to my right I see mother Westley here so I can't claim that this morning but it is good to know this brother and to have been known by him over these years and to celebrate the gift that he is not simply to Alfred Street but to the body of Christ I thank you sir for the wonderful privilege to share in this joyous time with you to all of the Reverend clergy who occupy space both in pulpit and pew associate pastor was here the Reverend Johnson and to our worship leader the Reverend Brock whom I have been blessed to know all these many years and she reminded me to be very careful of what stories I told so I will not tell it all but if you want to know a little bit more about the chairwoman of the board of the n-double a-c-p talked to me about when she before she was chairwoman of the board of the n-double a-c-p but i thank god for her friendship her sisterhood throughout these years she is a blessing to my life and I thank God for her she was kind to tell you about the was sharing that we had when her husband would home to be with the Lord she did not tell you her kindness to me when she gave me so many things from his life that blessed my life and for her friendship I am eternally grateful God bless you remember Brock and we thank God for this wheeler Avenue cadre of brothers and sisters who has come today you have heard this quiet I thank God for them they are absolute blessing to us that's a portion of our Mass Choir they're recording choir that song that you just heard was recorded by this choir on our 50th anniversary CD you all are 200 plus year old church we are your little sister Church down in Houston Texas we just turned 50 in 1962 and to celebrate that we recorded a CD entitled o to be kept by Jesus and I know you enjoyed that wonderful music we're blessed by it so feel free to go on any of these internet things and get get your copy a man get your copy it took a lot to to record that I need you all to help us recruit a man ain't proud too big a man o minister kneel I'm mr. music tells us that we brought some witness thank God for that a man we need to get rid of these things amen 50th anniversary was two years ago it's time to get rid of this so we have some that we brought with us they are $10 each amen and because it's pastor's anniversary we're gonna give you two for 20 and I hope that you will be blessed I know you will be blessed by that deal a man might not be we are we're sisters you know sister churches we do that for each other and since you're on Northeast campus we're delighted to share with you in such a way it's good to be in our northeast campus you all are keeping it pretty and clean up here thank you for that I just had to come check on you today pastor cuesta this is from the wheeler Avenue Church we want to celebrate with you and I hope this will bless you over these five years you've been a blessing to this church but over the 15 years that I've been every wheeler Avenue you come every single year and you've been a blessing to us and this is for us to say God bless you and happy out of her [Applause] amen several persons from our church are here chairman of deacons is here and I'm grateful to have him with us our handbills with you here the early part of worship they ministered to us in such a great way and I thank God for them and God bless you handle I just want to acknowledge a few others I assure is are always dutiful and in their places they don't get the spotlight all the time but I see you back there and I think that for you we mentioned just a moment ago that our churches 51 plus years old almost 52 and we are delighted to have one of our charter members with us today she has traveled to be with us today since the book I saw you when you came in I just want to acknowledge I just just this one person is gonna stand this is our it's one of our charter members 13 folks started our church and this is one of them sister Booker a man god bless you man get the see churches 51 and she is 45 go figure don't leave me I don't know how she did that but she did it so nicely and I praise God for her that's a word from the Lord today if you have your Bible will you open your Bible with me to Psalm 27 so I'm 27 one of my favorite passages of Scripture in the Old Testament book of Psalms Psalm 27 some 27 we'll begin our reading at verse 1 some 27 beginning with verse 1 the Old Testament of Psalms Psalm 27 many of us can recite it from memory and if we can't we ought to work on that this is one of those passages you ought to memorize every Christian ought to have some verses of Scripture in his or her head and this is one of that I would suggest to you is a good one to have Psalm 27 beginning with verse 1 if you have it say Amen from the King James Version the word of the Lord reads like this the Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear the Lord is the strength of my of whom shall I be afraid that's enough amen praise God for His Holy Word you may be seated in the presence of our God the Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear the Lord is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid Bonecrusher have you heard of him I hear some with a resounding yeah in the sanctuary you've heard of Bonecrusher well I must admit to you I was most unfamiliar with that name until one afternoon when leaving the campus of wheeler Avenue Baptist Church I got into my car and saw that name displayed on the radio screen that sits on my dash when I looked at that screen and saw Bonecrusher although the volume was muted it piqued my curiosity I wanted to know what in the world was a bone-crushing bone-crushing that's what came up on the dash on the screen my radio when I got into my car now to be sure I am NOT the only one who drives my car so I wanted to know who in the world would put my radio on something like that you see Church I'm a Christian Christian's don't listen all that kind of music that trashy music but I had to I had to investigate a bit farther what was going on with this Bonecrusher see Reverend Johnson often drives my car and I wondered what had revenue been listening to while driving in my car now church family I'll admit to you I turned it up and I listened to every word and to be sure on this Sunday morning the words of bonecrushers music are not to be spoken in this sacred space I cannot recount to you what I heard coming from the lips of Bonecrusher when I turn that radio up but there were four words that just would not let me go for while Bonecrusher was singing in that refrain to the song if you can call it that four words kept recurring over and over and over again like Wesley those four words were I ain't never I see you back there telling me what those words are I see you have a balanced Church by the pastor day they don't just know come thou fount of every blessing they know I ain't never scared now that's the title I want to use for this little message today because it seems to me that although although brother Bonecrusher used those words in this century in this millennium I am convinced that many many millennia ago there was one who could have been the original one to use those words for in Psalm 27 it seems to me that King David that great psalmist of Israel understands something about not being afraid of anything not being intimidated by anything not having anxiety over anything when you know who you are and whose you are when you know in whose hands you find yourself you can boldly profess as did David in Psalm 27 that the Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear the Lord is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid if we fast forwarded and brought it into this century maybe King David would have said ain't never scared I know in whom I believe I know in whose hands I find myself and it seems to me that on this Sunday morning there may be someone seated in the sanctuary perhaps in the overflow maybe even viewing by the World Wide Web who has some phobia some fear some anxiety that grips you and this allows you to have the promotion and the progression in life that you know you should have and today the Lord speaks to us from the words of the psalmist named David and he says to us that there is no reason to fear there is no reason to have anxiety no reason not to continue to walk forward in life because if you know who God is and you know what God has done you know that God is able to do exceeding and abundantly above all you can ask or even think according to the power that works within you listen again will you please to the words of this sweet psalmist of Israel listen again to the words of the one who's called a man after God's own heart listen to the one who understood what it meant for her to have God to find him where he was and move him to the place of prominence he needed to be he says the Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear the Lord is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid how does someone make such powerful statement listen to the declaratives and the interrogatives of verse 1 the declaratives the Lord is my light the Lord is my salvation the Lord is the strength of my life these bold assertions these bold affirmations that he makes in this first verse of Psalm 27 need not go unnoticed listen again to these words these declarative statements the Lord is my light the Lord is my salvation the Lord is the strength of my life and with those declarative statements he follows them up with interrogatives queries questions that need to be asked and answered whom shall I fear of whom shall I be afraid if you know that the Lord is your light if you know that the Lord is your salvation if you know that the Lord is the strength of your life who you gonna be scared of what is there to fear what phobia can rip you and disallow you to have the progress you need to have may I shared with you again I hope you haven't gotten bored of it yet the Lord is my life the Lord is my salvation the Lord is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid how does he save this dr. Wesley how does he make this bold assertion how does he stand so fat for Italy and make these claims of Psalm 27 well if you kept your Bible open if you kept that app unlock will you please look again at Psalm 27 because it seems to me as the psalmist goes through these fourteen verses of this Psalm that he is real clear on who God is what God has done and why he can make this statement it's the thesis statement of the psalm in verse 1 but in the next 13 verses he undergirds he supports his thesis statement with some words that helped me to understand there is no reason to ever fear anything that should come in our lives I know that fear shows up but last time I checked your Bible the Bible says that God has not given us the spirit of fear but about and of love and of a sound mind how does he make these claims I'm glad you asked the question because if you keep on reading in your Bible you'll find out that he's able to make these claims first of all he is never scared because of his trials in God he said I'm not afraid because of my triumphs in God if you still have your Bible over and I hope you do please read with me look at verse 2 because in verse 2 he says when the wicked even my enemies and my foes came upon me to eat up my flesh they stumbled and fell please don't miss that he talks about his triumphs in God all too often church family isn't it true that we've talked so much about our tragedies we talked so much about our troubles we talked so much about our trials that we neglect to remember how many triumphs we've had in God and the truth the matter is all throughout this sanctuary their brothers and sisters who can testify every day hadn't been a bad day every day hadn't been a gloomy and doomy day there have been some days but I've had a smile on my face all day long where the Lord has shown me his grace his mercy his compassion his loving-kindness and I am grateful for my triumphs in God and somebody in the sanctuary can testify there been some days where I had to just thank God all day long for walking with me and talking with me and holding me and keeping me because I Givens I had some triumphs in my life and here's a good homework assignment it's a good homework assignment every now and then just pause in the middle of your day and start writing down all the good things God has done in your life just pause some time and you'll be able to testify with the late Rev Paul Jones all of my good days outweigh my bad days so I won't complain is there anybody in here who can testify here God's been good to me and so instead of complaining I lift my hands and say thank you lord I'm grateful for my triumphs in God and every now and then every believer are ensure that he or she takes some time simply to thank God for some triumphs you had yeah yeah for every mountain you brought me over for every valley you've seen me through for every blessing hallelujah for this I give you praise here here in the text the psalmist says when my enemies and my foes came upon me to eat up my flesh they stumbled and fell though a host she didn't camp against me my heart will not feel the war should rise against me in this will I be confident please watch the decks he said not only am I not afraid because of my triumphs in God but secondly I'm never afraid because of my trust in God because of my trust in God he said one thing will I be confident I love the way he makes this statement about his confidence in God he says I trust in God because I've seen how God is able to work miracles in my situation and because I've had some triumphs I've learned to trust him all the more I grew up in Chicago Illinois as you well know Emanuel Baptist Church 8301 south Damon Avenue Chicago Illinois six zero six two zero whatever I'm dr. LK Kari was my pastor when I grew up in Chicago as did dr. Wesley on the south side we understood there were some things that happen in all school traditional Baptist churches that have shifted a bit in these new school modern churches that we now pastor in the old school church we didn't start search 15 minutes early with praise and worship in the choir singing no no no no that ain't how we started church in the old school the Deacons would line up cross the furniture and we had what was known as devotion devotion is when a scripture where a song would be sung by a deacon and then a scripture would be read by a deacon and then a deacon would pray a prayer he'd pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and we always knew what the vegan was gonna pray because he prayed the same prayer last week we were able to walk right through that prayer with him maybe you've heard my deacons brand once again Heavenly Father a few of your head maid servants come knee bent and body bow we want to thank you that last night was not our last night I want to thinking that I bet it was not our cooling boy gonna thinking that our sheets were not our winding sheets we were thinking that early this morning you touched us with a finger of love be our golden moments the roller on a little while longer and then that Peter was started whooping beatings and that by the end of the present when it's time to call in hours to have sir give us a home into your kingdom where we breathe our lives out sweetly there those deacons knew how to pray right before they sat down to eat and went to sleep [Music] they would pray and get church started right after that prayer right after that prayer that was old beaten didn't Casey island steal any man you wrap his church he's in Casey Allen will start stringing out and single song went a little something like this I will trust I will trust [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's what they sound like in my home they said there are some things you can count on one thing you can count on is I'm going to trust in the Lord that the Lord has done so much for me has been so good to me that I've learned how to trust him if that was Solomon told his son Solomon told his son in Proverbs trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to thine own understanding in all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct that path here my church family is the psalmist David telling us we have no reason to be afraid because we serve a God who is trustworthy we serve a God in whom we can believe listen to what he says he says the host should encamp against me my heart shall not fear though war should rise against me and this will I be confident I'm going to be confident that God is able to secure me one thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after to behold the beauty of the Lord and doing quiet in his for in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion in the secret of his Tabernacle shall he hide me he shall set me up upon a rock I love this don't you for a scene of the storm it is boldly professing to us that no matter what you go through no matter what you deal with no matter the terror the trauma the trial the trouble the tragedy God is still able to secure you and hold you and provide for you in spite of the calamities that come in this life and don't you fool yourself despite what the televangelists might tell you God understands that in this life we will have some moments that where fear will try to grip us and take us off course there will come some moments when folk will show up to work on Monday and not be able to leave because some terrorist has shown up in their workplace opened fire and tried to shut down the lives and livelihood of hundreds of people in there and then in his walk in his path and that's what happens in life sometimes in life the trouble the tragedy of life will make you lose your trust in God but the psalmist says even if a host should encamp against you even if war should rise against me even if the worst should come in this life I'll still be comforted in my god and that's a good word for somebody no matter how the bottom drops out no matter if recession comes again no matter if the debt ceiling is messed up no matter if they can't reach a compromise in Washington DC the good news is we have a God who still support system holds us undergirds us it keeps us and is able to do for us what nobody else is able to do is there anybody in here who has lived through some trouble live through some calamity but you're here as a living testimony if you're trusting God he is able to make ways for you that you could not make for yourself if you're trusting God he'll feed you when the recession shows up if your trust in God he'll hold you even when you got to pitch the ball your desk and if your trust in God he's able to secure you for his glory and for your good [Applause] because of my triumphs in God I ain't never scared cuz of my trust in God let me push it just a bit farther if you don't mind because the psalmist likewise said I am not afraid because of the time I've spent with God if you watch through the next several verses you'll find out that the psalmist begins to talk to us about the time he spent with God he talks to us about the time he spent in worship time he spent in warfare he talks to us about the time he spent in praise and he talks to us about the time that he spends just lifting up the name of the Lord his God I I love this you ought to look at it and be grateful for what the psalmist says he say he says one thing I've desired of the Lord that will I seek after to to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the Lord and to enquire in his temple he now gives to us a picture of worship I like this for every believer ought to have a good worship life a good qualitative worship life that allows him or her to ensure that no weak will ever go by without worshiping God in the beauty of holiness can i push that argument just a bit farther but I got a funny feeling and a sneaking suspicion but if you really are believer as you say you are your worship should not simply be contained so the Alfred Street Baptist Church but every believer ought to spend some days in some moments in worship every single day of your life if the truth be told there's some folk who were worshiping on their way to worship this morning if the truth be told somebody got up and you were worshiping before you even left your house this morning you want to know how worship is always gonna be good when you worship on your way to worship when you start talking to God on your way to talk to God when you're starting lifting up the Lord on your way to lifting up the Lord if you had some more moments of worship before you got here we wouldn't have to pump you up and Prime yeah every time you get here to worship God you wouldn't need anybody standing before you talking about put your hands together you walk in this house with your hands lifted up your hands tapping unto the Lord is there anybody in here who should enough knows how to worship God in spirit and in truth and you can testify that worship is a whole lot better when your worship on your way to worship even if your favorite choir ain't singing you can still open up your mouth and begin to sing songs into the Lord either with dr. Wesley a preaching and you don't know that preacher from Texas you can still bless the Lord because you did not come to see a person in worship you came to celebrate the god of worship who is worthy every single day of our life he said I worship him but I don't only who know how to worship it my time has not just been in worship some of my time has been spent in warfare oh your Bible still over he says in verse 5 in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion in the secret of his tabernacle Shelley hide me and shall set me up upon a rock now now like this now the summons David who knows something about warfare speaks to us about the troubles he's had in his life he speaks to us about the time when he had to face some fake friends and some real enemies he speaks to us about the time when he had to deal with his life being jeopardized with him when he had to deal with the fact that folk had a bounty out on his head he knew that God was able to shelter him to hide him to secure him even when his enemies were trying to rise up against him now please don't miss you shout you because the summons says he's going to lift me up set me up upon a rock and he's literally saying that God is the only one who knows how to hide you in plain view God is not trying to put you in the inch in isolation he's not putting you in protective custody all by yourself somewhere he's saying you are sitting there your enemies can't see you but they can't get to you getting that amazing about our God how God can put us right there smack dab in the face of our enemies and they still trying to get at us and God says not my child no I'm covering them even in plain view setting them up upon a rocky is there anybody in here who's what Scott do that when your enemy tried to take you out when y'all haters thought they'd get the best of you but God said not so as a matter of fact he prepares a table before me in the presence of money he's a staff that I watched God cheat me when they were smiling in my face although I'm trying to take my place backstab was that's what they call as old-school I had to do new school and old school y'all didn't know bones Russia I bet you know backstab was coming and he did he says that God's gonna set me up upon the rock and my head's gonna be lifted up above my enemies around the back therefore I'm all for sacrifices of joy I'm gonna sing praise till the God of my suffering he says I don't only spending time in worship and not all my time has been spent in warfare some of my time has been spent in praise oh now don't get quiet here so this is when the church is supposed to really lift up their voices there is a sad Christian who can't praise God every now and then I mean I know you came to worship to be right and in the ending or expected place on Sunday morning but when you get here not only are we expected to worship God but we're likewise expected to praise God I love worship worship from that anglo-saxon word it literally means worse Shipley's I mean it means I worship God based upon how much God is worth to me did you guess that I said worship from anglo-saxon worth-ship wrth Cook worshipping Allah means I worship God based upon how much God is worth to me when I think about God's worth my worship is intensified well I think about how he blessed me and save me and forgave me and delivered me his worth goes up I think about how God has opened doors for me and provided for me and liberated me and given me joy in the midst of sorrow his worth goes up well I think about God how God has made for so many provisions for me and I don't only think about what he provided but I think about what he prevents him his worth goes up and maybe I'm talking to somebody in the church today who's got high worst for God and you don't care what anybody else says about it your worth for God is high and you come to worship with your hands lifted up because you understand not only do our worship God but I likewise have to praise God now see everybody doesn't have the same worth for God but last time I checked your Bible everybody that's what I said everybody everybody is supposed to praise God everybody doesn't worship God to the same degree but last time I checked your Bible right there in the book of Psalm 150 if you want to be exact about it the last verse says let everything that hath breath praise the Lord worship him but if you got breath in your body go ahead take a check right quick if you got breath in your body you are inspect expected to praise the name of the Lord now if you've been sitting in church consist before eight o'clock and you haven't praise God one time we're gonna pause for about 12 seconds to give you your opportunity to catch up with the rest of us because God is worthy to be praised from the rising of the Sun to the going down of the same the Lord's name is to be praised is there anybody in here who said I gotta praise Him well he is why hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah he says I spent some time with God I spent some time in worship I've had to spend some time in warfare how's mr. Damon praise but then those latter verses he says I spent some time in prayer can I be honest with you today you cannot be a strong Christian and not have a prayer life it is impossible it is impossible to be a strong Christian and not pray regularly notice I didn't say every now and then notice I didn't say when the Deacon comes up and leaves us in the invocation notice I didn't say when we have all to bread every believer ought to pray everyday I mean if you got up came to worship and you haven't talked to God yet you may need to check your relationship with God every now and then you ought to call on the name of the Lord and every prayer a petition some prayer is just Thanksgiving thank you for keeping me in my right mind god I thank you but not letting me go off on them co-workers when I thought I was gonna say something I knew I wasn't supposed to say god I thank you but not letting me show up in this Joker's house and thank you he says I've spent some time in prayer listen you do not get strong just by praise and we have so uplifted praise in the church in the contemporary church we've so uplifted praise that we have some kind of way stroller shadow on prayer and we need more believers who call on God if you watch the Ministry of Jesus the only reason Jesus was as strong as he was because every night he steal away and start talking to the father and there's somebody in here who knows something bout the benefits of prayer and somebody in he'll who knows that if it had not been for somebody praying for you you wouldn't be alive in an outfit Street in Sunday morning if it hadn't been for somebody praying for you you were doing stuff you had no business doing going places you had no business going bad Ian Lockwood fault you had no business hanging out with him but somebody was back in the house saying Lord bless my baby Lord don't let her go too far Lord don't let him lose his mind is there anybody in here who's living on Mama's prayers and daddy's prayers and grandparents prayers anybody who know that the preacher prayed for you the deacon prayed for you have the only reason you're still alive is somebody prayed for you and you can't just live on other folks prayers every now and then you're pray for yourself every now and in your ask God to keep you safe from harm every now and then your ass got to order your steps enter heaven on in your ass got to make you a better believe I'm a better Christian a more loving individual less mean individual is there anybody in here who says God does answer prayer I got some Bible for it you want to hear it yes my people which are called by my name will humble themselves and pray seek my face you turn from their wicked ways then will I hear from heaven will forgive their sin and heal their land that's not enough for you trip over to the New Testament the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous man availeth much that ain't enough check out Jesus words and ask and it shall be given seek and ye shall find knock and the door will be open David says when you said seek my face I said your face Lord will I seek he said I had to call on him and I found out when I prayed to him he was able to do for me what I could not even do for myself let me call it a message win it when David shuts it down now he gets all the way through verse 13 when you just a he said I would have fainted that I but not believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living he said after all I been through after all I've dealt with I could have given up I could have thrown in the time I could have said oh what's the use I would have fainted had I believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of that I loved David don't you because David is at both one time at one time both spiritual and real I like David because David is both spiritual and real you know some believers some Christians get spiritual and spooky I'm like you don't have to be weird to be a believer you ain't gotta be strange to be a believer as somebody hollered the whip outside oh I'm blessed at highly favored and ask you that how's the weather I can tell you blessed I know you're highly favored hallelujah is the weather isn't still raining like it was last night [Applause] he's spiritual but he's real and the realness of David shows up in verse 13 he said that's all I've been through I could have thrown in the towel after all I've been through I could have given up have all the folks trying to kill me I could have said oh forget after my family members turning on me I could have said what's the use I almost fainted almost gave up almost David after all these years of serving the Lord there were some times I didn't feel like going back sometimes I just wanted to say all forget it I'm not going back anymore just like Jeremiah who said I am preaching no more but just as soon as he got ready to sit down it was like fire shut up in his boat he said I don't feel like it I don't want to go anymore but there's something on the inside that makes you say I gotta keep on keeping on it and David said I almost gave up and the psalmist says in Psalm 73 my foot had almost slipped but David said I believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living I I knew that God was gonna turn it around at some point in time man I knew that the Lord was gonna make a way I just kept believing and is there a believer in here who can testify and no matter how bad it gets no matter how dark the situation no matter how dismal the circumstance I still believe God and I don't believe I'm only gonna see God in the by and by I'm not only believing that I'm gonna see God work things out on the other side I believe I'm going to see some stuff worked out in the land of the living I still believe that God's gonna bless my children and I'm gonna live to see it I believe God's gonna bless my children sure and I live the seat is there anybody in here who still believes you're gonna see some stuff you don't see God work things out see God make a way see God turn it around and see God open doors did see God provide I wanna see and so when David gets the first 14 he says because I'm not afraid I can teach others about God I like this he said I can teach you now some things because I've been through some things and here's what I want to teach you I'm goin I'm done here's what I want to teach you verse 14 wait on the Lord church folk don't know in this shop I just gave you your shout cue David said I've been through a love now but I don't have to keep this to
