sad Christian who won't open up his or her mouth and speak about the goodness and greatness of God in his or her life is a sad believer we got an open up their mouths and say if it had not been for the Lord who was on my side I don't know where I would be listen to the words of Scripture from the revelation as it says we overcome by the blood of the Lamb that's Jesus and by the word of our testimony how we give thanks to God this Sunday for the wonderful gift of salvation found in Jesus Christ we thank God for the God in whom we believe the one for whom nothing shall be called impossible to whom we owe all honor glory and praise to the distinguished and esteemed eminent pastor of this church my friend and beloved brother dr. Word of God I hope you have your Bibles if you do you turn to my favorite book of the Bible mother Wesley I praise God for you I see you back there in the Book of Psalms the Book of Psalms and when you look into the Book of Psalms right along with us this day some 107 Psalm 107 Psalm 107 some 107 in the Old Testament book of Psalms at Psalm 107 we look into the Word of God and find a familial verse of scripture to both Bible readers those who have been in church for a little while I'm grateful for those who were caucusing from wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and aside to come over and be with us in worship today every year during this time they are here not because I'm here but because the Black Caucus is here but I'm grateful that they come over and they share with us in worship Psalm 107 verse 2 I'm doing from the King James Version trees like this let the redeemed of the Lord say so that's enough amen praise God for His Holy Word you may be seated in the presence of our good and gracious God let the redeemed of the Lord say so well Talmud as I was a share together on this special and significant Sunday I want to talk from the subject he did it again he did it again he did it again the old Saints used to sing a song that has always blessed the Lord's church when it has been lifted I suspect that in this very sacred space and sanctuary this song has been uplifted time and time again there is there's not a Christian Church I suspect and it's not yet excited the saints of God sing the third scans of a beloved hymn it goes a little something like this through many dangers toils and snares I have already come twas grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me on those words have for many years blessed the people of God who have sung them who have heard them who have remembered the profundity in the depth found within those very lines here again the words that caused mothers to tap their foot and wave their arms here again the words that cause preachers to put smiles on their faces and prepare to preach the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ through many dangers toils and snares I have already come twas grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home art those words even personal for you I suspect they're not just the words of an aggregate congregation they're not just the words of men and women who sit together in pews all across the world and bless the Lord by singing that song but that's your personal testimony isn't it and if you look back over your life you've understood that God has brought you through some situations and circumstances and if you are not protected by God could have caused you to lose your mind if not your life but through many dangers toils and snares I have already come it was not because of my goodness it was not because of my aptitude it was not because I have so many credentials behind my name but it was grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me on the words of Amazing Grace have blessed our Souls throughout the ages haven't they and those words continue to bless us as we think about how good god has been on this fifth anniversary I suspect the song can still be sung that over all these years God has continued to shower His grace upon his people both at the Alpha Street Church and at wheeler Avenue and every other Church door as the elders would say that's been opened in his name and God's grace has been lavishly poured out upon us and for His goodness for His grace for his grandeur for his glory we ought be grateful and on this Sunday we come looking at these familiar words of Scripture in Psalm 107 to remember that the grace of God has not just started with us with our bad sales but the grace of god has been lavished on the people of God throughout the ages throughout the world and throughout this this wonderful time that the world has been in existence and and the people of God known as the children of Israel God's chosen people the apple of his eye knew something about God's graciousness in their lives not just we who occupy space at Alfred Street today not just those of us who join in the congregation singing up of the songs of sizing the songs of Zion praise to God but all those who've had their hand in God's hand have known something about his grace listen to how these these wonderful children of Israel have been blessed by the Lord their God if you read Psalm 107 in its entirety it will show to you that God has kept his promise to be with his people to covenant with them to keep them and secure them throughout the days of their lives and when they write Psalm 107 when the psalmist writes this Psalm he speaks about a historical pilgrimage with God well they have watched God open doors and make ways and grant provisions and to give to them what they needed just when they needed most hey didn't you hear the choir when they saying God steps in just when you need him most well the children of Israel understood that didn't they they knew that God would step in just when you needed them him most and they wrote about it and they sang about it and they got happy about it it was not simply a cognitive experience it was not something that they just ruminated about in their minds but they emoted they got happy about the goodness of God in their lives isn't that a good cue from our history for those of us today who have understood that God's been walking with us and keeping us and securing us and taking care of us all the days of our lives it is not just a cognitive experience where we ruminate about how good god has been but every now and then the redeemed of the Lord on our say-so this is not something for us simply to ponder in our hearts is it not something for us simply to think about when we when we get home this is something for us to open up our mouths and talk about so sad Christian who doesn't have a testimony so sad Christian who won't open up his or her mouth and speak about the goodness and greatness of God in his or her life he is a sad believer we got an open up their mouths and say if it had not been for the Lord who was on my side I don't know where I would be listening to the words of Scripture from the revelation as it says we overcome by the blood of the Lamb that's Jesus and by the word of our testimony reason we keep on keeping on the reason we're in able to keep on pressing on key is because we've been covered by the blood of Jesus Christ and we have a testimony on our lips that through many dangers toils and snares we have already come it was grace that brought us safe thus far and grace will lead us on listen to be sure this powerful psalm starts out with words that every believer are keep in his/her mind and on his/her lips at all times listen to the first verse of Psalm 107 all give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever as you watch the text unfold as you watch the movements of these 43 verses you will understand that the psalm begins with what I like to call a communal expectation let the church say communal let's just say expectation let the whole church say a communal expectation this call to Thanksgiving is not a call for one or two of the believers to give thanks but this call to Thanksgiving is for everyone who has watched God working in his or her circumstances to open up his or her mouth and speak words of Thanksgiving to the god of their salvation he says all give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever to be sure this Psalm stands in the at the end of a trilogy of Psalms and has that say the same thing I suspect the psalmist understood that church folk don't always get it when you say it the first time so you got to come back and say it again and if that didn't get it they Dave tell me the third time is the charm so you got to say it again and say it again so in Psalm 105 the psalmist begins with these very same words all give thanks unto the lord call upon his name if you didn't get it in Psalm 105 to trip over to Psalm 106 could praise you the Lord o give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever and just in case you nodded off to sleep wake up and check out Psalm 107 for in Psalm 107 verse 1 the psalmist continues this trilogy concludes it by saying all the effects unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever let me give it to you again for those who missed it I said in Psalm 105 the psalmist says o give thanks unto the lord call upon his name in Psalm 106 the psalmist says o give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever in Psalm 107 all give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever Deacon Johnson I just said the same thing about seven times and I said it the same way and there's still some look at me as if I was not talking to the community of saints who are gathered together in this place I was not just saying that so I can recite for you was in the Bible I'm saying that's what every believer in this building will understand your responsibility to give thanks unto the Lord if God's been good to you if God's made ways for you if God's open doors for you if God's provided for you o give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever but let's go deeper let's go deeper let's not leave it there at the surface let's go deeper for in Psalm 105 in some 105 the psalmist begins to talk about how God had been with the children of Israel from their ancestor the patriarch Abraham and he had walked them through all the lines of their lives from Abraham all the way through their entrance into the Promised Land you missed it let me give it to you again he says God's been with the patriarch Abraham and he was with all those who came behind him as they made their way all the way into the Egypt bondage and even into a promised land that God secured for them he gives to them what the heap wasn't worth it what they what the work but some would call the house get shipped up the Germans come to the Hiles geschichte is their salvation history how God has had his hand on them from the time of their ancestors all the way to their current situation it literally means that just as God is with you God was with your mom and everything God was with your grandparents and God was with those who preceded you those slaves who are down the street four blocks away who were calling on the name of God if God was with them God is with you as well and if you want to thank God for something and thank God for how he kept your parents and kept your grandparents kept your ancestors and he's still keeping you right now not now that you and your promised land don't you get brand new now that you're in your promised land don't you act like it you brought yourself safe thus far and now that you in your promised land got you a corner office and got you a nice little car got a little money in the bank don't you get knew and act like God didn't do it for you don't you dare tell anybody you a self-made man you a self-made woman you pause yourself by your own bootstraps and if it had not been hallelujah he was with you Abraham all the way until the Promised Land but watch Psalm 106 because I wonder six says even when the storm the Israelites made some mistakes it had some missteps God was still with them even when they did some stuff they had no business doing with some places they had no business going and says some things they had no business saying that God was with them and the reason not to get got to give thanks because God didn't wipe them out when they were in them in the midst of their mess we straight over the top to meet you again I said they made some mistakes and some missteps read it when you get home since I know you read your Bible every day read Psalm 106 when you get home and you'll see that the children of Israel made some mistakes and some missteps but God was with them through it all that's why the psalmist says give thanks to the Lord because he couldn't cut you off in your foolishness and folly but he kept you instead of erasing you from the entire plan he had for your life I'm really not talking just about the children of Israel I'm talking about the children of Alpha Street and wheeler Avenue and any other church that's represented in this place because let's be honest every last one of us has made some mistakes and some missteps and every last one of us have done some things we hope never goes public but is there anybody in here who is grateful that God kept you even when you were making mistakes and missteps when your stuff written when when you kept on doing that which you said you would never do again God said I'm still gonna keep you here and if God forgave you for every mistake and every misstep we'll all give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy indoors forever okay all right you missed that thing going to Psalm 107 because in Psalm 107 the psalmist helps them to understand now that they're on the other side of their mistakes and missteps and now the things are going is whether they are going for them don't cease to thank God because you're now in a lofty place he says I want you to look back over your life and see every scene every saga every setting of your existence and realize that God's hand was on it and when you get on the other side of the drummer on the other side of the challenge on the other side of the burden make sure you give God such watch the psalms insult one of the five he says your history gives you reason to thank God and some wonder six your misery gives you reason to thank God it's not 107th your blessings give you reason to thank God and there's somebody in the place today who now needs to look over the entire spectrum of your life and say in my past he was good in my foolishness he was good in my present situation he was good so now I got to give God thanks for two reasons he's good and His mercy endures forever oh you don't know what mercy is you must have missed the definition of mercy yes said in the Hebrew he said is the steadfast loving kindness of God that loving-kindness that God never retracts from his children he never takes back from his children he always has his hand on them and he meets us with mercy every single day of our lives that's why jeremiah said in lamentations chapter 3 it is of the lord's mercy that we are not consumed because his Compassion's fail not they are new every morning great is thy faithfulness and he said God has been giving me every day brand-new mercy I like that about God he does not give us leftover mercy he does not give us stale mercy he does not give us mercy that cannot energize us and put the day that we have to endure but God gives us brand new mercies every day it literally means this that God has more mercy than we have mess is this thing on I said I should have had at least a few more amens right there that God has more mercy than we have miss and he says you brothers and sisters weak or give God fights first of all because he's good and secondly because his mercy endures forever all right he wants to space press his claim just a bit farther so if you keep on reading Psalm 107 you'll find out that not only does the summers give to us a communal expectation but he gives to us this communal expectation because of God's continual restoration let the church say continuum let's just say restoration that all God's people say continual restoration I'm in the book I hope you kept your Bibles open if not will you please open back up to Psalm 107 if you got a lock on your phone or your Bible app unlock it real quick and I want you to walk with us through this little passage of Scripture in Psalm 107 because now the summers begins to show to us the continual restoration of God he gives to us in Psalm 107 four vignettes four little scenes that the children of Israel have endured have gone through have experienced and when he gives to those gives to us those scenes he helps us to know that through it all God has continually restored us and given to us an energy to keep on keep it on I'm still in your Bible if you read after verse after verse to deliver a little Berta that I read let the redeemed of the Lord say so he says as they say this that whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy he says he gathered them out of the lands on the east west the north in the south they wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way they found no City dwelling they were hungry they were thirsty their souls faded in them all of that was going on with the children of Israel but in the midst of their destitution of the cersei destitution in the rest of their destitution God granted deliverance he talks to them about their destitution I don't know if you've ever been in a place of destitution but these folks found themselves in a destitute situation they had no place to dwell hey Gavin gathered from the east west north and south they were one in the wilderness for 40 years they wandered in the wilderness and the Bible says although they wandered in the wilderness their shoes never gave out although they wandered in the wilderness their clothes never wore out and all they they were thirsty and hungry they were fainting within themselves when they asked God to feed them he gave them manna from on high and if the matter wasn't good enough he gave him water out of a rock he led them by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night they didn't have anything but in the words of my past about CLK Carrie from Chicago Illinois Dan got nothing but ain't lacking nothing have you ever been there but you didn't have what you thought you needed to get to you get you where you were to where you needed to be but some kind of way God made sure that everything you needed was always provided for you don't know how in the world you made it for month eight a month BT but some kind of way God stepped in and just when you needed him most you thought for sure the key on your gas statement everlasting because you kept on driving and driving and driving when you were destitute in your situation and some kind of way God made a way even when you didn't think you were going to be able to sustain yourself in from one place to know what it means to be broke but I've been broke and broke ain't no fun I don't know if you've ever been there but destitution it's not fun and so the Bible says that in their destitute state the next verse says then they cry to the Lord in their distress and he delivered them from their trouble you just mister shell Q I said it was bad for him didn't have what they needed what they wanted they thought for sure that they weren't going to be able to make it another father but they cried to the Lord and their distress and he delivered them from their trouble that's destitution but keep on reading these little vignettes cuz vignette number two gives to us not destitution but desolation if you keep on reading in your Bible you'll find in verse 10 that he sat in darkness shadow of death bound in affliction and iron because they rebelled against the words of God and condemned the counsel of the Most High therefore he brought down their heart with labor they fell down and there was no one to help them this a desolate situation look up when they fell down in desolation it seemed as if they would not be able to recover desolation is a rough road to travel please notice why they're in the situation they're in they're in the situation they're in because they rebelled against God now I understand that most church folk don't say Amen at points like this you don't have to say Amen just wink at me if you know something about putting yourself in a bad situation if you know good and whether there been some moments where you did some stuff that you knew good and well you weren't supposed to do but some kind of way God didn't take you out of the situation he kept you in spite of it you know good and well that every day has not been a day where you did everything the way God wanted you to do and I come on let's be honest it's just us in here let's be honest today there's some book in here who said God if you get me out of this I will never do this against anybody in here who's real today who've gotten yourself into some situations and you had to call out to God that's what the Saints did the Bible says in the next verse then they cried to the Lord in their trouble and he delivered them from their de-stresses I like the real Saints in the church real Saints who are honest a bridge I don't know what you're talking about but if I remember my college days I just thought I'd give you a moment to reflect just a moment to reflect some of us look we remember that kind of dating in there some folk who said after I got out of college I was a bad motor scooter yes I was and somebody in here can testify last month I still met oh that's too far away last night when you were okay all right here it is God if you get me out of it I'll never go back they cried to the Lord in their desolation and he delivers him but keep on reading the vignette number three because in vignette number three the Bible says in in verse in verse 14 that day he brought them out of the shadow darkness and brought break their bands in sunder and then if you get down to verse 16 they became fools or seventeen fools because they're in transgressions and because of their iniquities they are afflicted their sole abhorrent all manner of meat and they draw near unto the gates of death watch this he says not only have they had to deal with destitution and desolation but they even had to deal with destruction that the foolishness that they got themselves on you brought destruction to their own person I know it's getting real quiet now nobody even wants to look up from their Bible right now everybody taking copious notes now you're just writing your head right nothing you just say Lord make him get through this real fast some of the things we've done brought harm to our own selves has some some habits that was certainly unholy some circumstances we got ourselves into we told it a lot of you get me out of this I'll never do it again and then you went right back that's how my big daddy would have said if he goes right back into the situation you a yeah matter of fact some enjoyed it so much they strategized as to how they were gonna do they planned it out they were made sure that every I was got it and every T was closed if you can't say a man just look a man it's alright every now and then we brought destruction on our own selves but the next verse said then they cried unto the Lord and their destruction that he lifted them save them out of their distress I'm so glad that God doesn't just restore us once or twice or thrice but over and over and over again he keeps on doing great things for us is there a witness in this place today who can look back over your life and testify that over and over and over again God keeps doing great things in my life but let's look I'm almost through but let's look at one more vignette but there's another vignette in the text because the Bible says in verse 23 now they go down to the sea and ships they do business in great waters these see the works of the Lord and there's wonders in the deep he commanded and raise up the stormy wind which lifted up the waves thereof could they mount up to the heaven could they go down again to the depths their soul is melted because of trouble they reel to and fro and stack it like a drunken man and I at their wit's end look up he said now is not destitution not desolation not destruction now they deal with devastation watch this this devastation has nothing to do with their sin this devastation is simply because they're trying to survive sometimes life will knock the life out of you I mean just trying to make it from Sunday to Saturday trying to get from one church service to the next life will beat up on you and you never expected it just leaving church on Sunday go to work on Monday and some deranged gunman shows up at your workplace and start spraying bullets all over the place until 12:00 I did indeed he becomes the thirteenth how much foolishness do we have to deal with just trying to survive some of us in here who can testify today some days just try to knock the life out of me it hard and I stagger like a drunken man this my brothers and sisters is called a storm that shows up in your life unexpectedly and tries to knock you off course and disallow you to keep on keeping on in this life have you ever had to deal with a storm have you ever had to deal with that which made you stagger which made you weak which made you not know are you going to make it a storm will show up it reminds me of that New Testament passage doesn't it remind you in the disciples wall netbook with the Lord Jesus Christ Jesus went down to the him to part of the ship and witness sleep and while he was sleeping down there the Bible says on a storm arose on the lake that storm started half making the waves beat against that ship and the wind was beating against that they didn't know if they were gonna be able to survive but somebody had the good sense to say go wake up Jesus and if you wake up Jesus he knows how to handle the storm that we deal with in this life is their witness in the building who can testify he knows how to handle your storm the Bible says when they woke Jesus up he went to the bow of that boat he just spoke to the winds and the waves that he had already created and when he spoke to the winds and waves he said peace be still and he shut down the winds and the way that I'm so grateful that we still serve a God who owned this very day can calm the stormy winds of our lives down with just three of the words yes he can just say peace be still we'll have peace in our homes and peace on our jobs and peace in our lives and peace and our bodies peace be still Bible says when they dealt with those storms being they cried unto the Lord and he delivered them from all their distress I like the continual restoration of the Lord morning by morning new mercies I see the continual rester every time I needed he steps in and works things out for my good the continual restoration of God not when he's feels like it but every time I need him he shows up just in the nick of time continual restoration when my friends get out of me and my family may walk out on me there is a God who shows up every time I call and he will deliver he will make a way he will open doors he continually the Bible says he restoreth my soul psalmist starts out with a communal expectation he continues with continual restoration but then he shuts it down when in verses 8 15 21 and 31 he says the same thing he says and he's of those four verses after the dista tution after the desolation after the destruction after the devastation all that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men you just missed a shout cue because now he gives a congregational invitation he's a law that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for his wonderful works to the children is a congregational invitation everybody who's experienced destitution everybody who's experienced desolation everybody who's experienced destruction everybody who's experienced desolation is now called to do the same thing all that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men you are missing it I'm not talking about the children of Israel right now I'm talking about somebody listening to my voice in this Sunday service and you can testify you have some destitution and you've had some desolation and you have some destruction and you have some devastation but when you're called on the Lord God said I won't leave you like a foundry I'll fix you in your situation and if God has ever paid some of your bills and healed your body and open some doors and made ways out of no way and made those storms to calm down you cannot sit silently like a statue in the sanctuary the Bible says all that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for his wonderful works to the children men he did not just do it when I was 12 and he did not just do it when I was 25 and he did not just make a way when I was 32 but over and over and over again that's why I'm leading this sermon he did it again and if you can look back over your life and see how God has blessed you and see how God has brought you again and again and again oh that man would praise the Lord for His goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men for year number one for year number two for year number three for year number four for year number five over and over and over again he lets you stand here preach his word he deeds to his people speaking lightning to his Saints and when you think about how good god has been to you all that Wesley would praise the Lord for His goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men but he's not the only person in this sanctuary with a testimony I'm looking in the balcony and I've see some folks who had to call on God and you found out he will ha make away somehow if you know he will all that man would praise the Lord for His goodness and his wonderful works to the children man I'm looking at some folk and you saying you don't understand that's beneath me I don't do all that holiday I don't do all that clapping I didn't ask you to do what I do I asked you to do with the Saint the Bible says and the Bible says let everything that happened praise the Lord so somebody in the building whose watch God work it out for you somebody in the building who seen God pay your bills somebody in the building whose watch God heal your body somebody in the building whose watch God turn things around I dare you on a Sunday afternoon to open up your mouth lift up your voice and name of the Lord I gotta leave you I apologize for taking so long but the work in Hebrew for praise in this text is not to lift up the voice is not the singing shout but the word in Hebrew is simply to lift up your hands just the word yonder it literally means I lift up my hands and surrender to God I lift up my hands and adoration to god and is there anybody in here you may not shout like cause you may not dance like susta willis but you'll lift up both your hands and say to God be the glory for the things he has done again and again and again and when I think of the goodness of Jesus and all he's done for me my soul cries out hallelujah hallelujah won't he do it our God our God is not a one-hit wonder I God did not lose his ability to bless and to protect and to strengthen just cuz he did it once before the same God who blessed you in time past is blessing you right now the same God who restored you last week is able to restore you this week the old saying she was singing like this the Lord is blessing me writing is there anybody in here with a right now testimony anybody hallelujah buried a nice I got a stop I feel like dancing but I gotta stop the idea that the Bible is not to be rewritten so that we act as if we can do what we need to do what we want to do with the
