hey guys if you want to start sculpting in blender you just need this video i'm going to tell you how we can exactly start sculpting and blending and here is the thing you don't need to learn every brush and blender you just need to learn how you can use just a few brushes in blender and practice and actually i'm gonna tell you which brushes i use for the most part i suggest that you just learn them and and start sculpting in blender so let's get started okay guys in this tutorial i'm just gonna explain how you can get started sculpting in blender without any previous knowledge we don't wanna know about other sections in blender and i'm just gonna walk you through sculpting section in blender and show you how it works and how you can get started okay first of all when you open the blender software you see this window here you can choose sculpting and go straight to the sculpting section or you can choose general and go to the layout here we choose general okay now when you first enter the blender software you can see this cube the light and the camera here you can delete them but before starting anything in this software i think you should know about how to navigate in this software so if you use mouse navigating in blender software is like this you can start rotating around your object by holding the middle mouse button and when you hold the middle mouse button and ctrl on your keyboard and drag to the right or left you can zoom in and zoom out on your object and when you hold middle mouse button and shift on your keyboard you can move to the right or left like this and i really suggest that you use tablet for especially sculpting in blender if you use tablet for this sculpting or any other thing in blender before starting navigating in blender you should go to edit and select blender preferences go to input and check this option which is emulate three button mouse actually it allows you to use your pen tablet instead of the middle mouse button so after doing this you can click with your pen tablet and hold alt to rotate around the object just like this and also you can hold ctrl and alt and move to the right or left with your pen to zoom in and zoom out like this and also you can hold alt shift and your pin and move to the right or left now i'm going to select these things and delete them by using x or delete now i want to tell you a few hot keys that you should know the first one is tilda key which is below the escape button on your keyboard actually when you hold tilde key you can see these options that actually by clicking every one of them you can switch between different views for example you can go to top view front view if you want to get out of that view you should hold alt key and move your pen to the right or left so that you can go to the perspective view the next useful hotkey is shift a actually we use this shift k hotkey a lot for example every time you want to add a new object to the workflow you can click on shift a go to mesh and choose your favorite object and for sculpting for example i add uv sphere for the most part one thing that you need to change in my opinion is that you can go to this view option here and change your focal length you can change your focal length to 85 or 100 millimeter because i believe when it is 50 millimeter for sculpting the object could be a little bit distorted so it's better to change it next useful hotkey is tap that you should know whenever you click on tap button on your keyboard you can move between object and edit mode okay now as you can see we are in the layout mode you can see it on the top left so when we want to go to sculpting section we can choose sculpting section on the top left or we can go to object mode on the top left and choose sculpting mode and here we go we are now in the sculpting section okay now when you enter the sculpting section there are actually a few useful parts that i'm gonna explain the first part is brushes you can see all the brushes for sculpting in blender on the left actually you can drag this line to the right or left to see the names of the brushes or even organize them like this as you can see there are a few brushes here in blender but i think most of the people just use some of them not all of them and especially if you're learning them for the first time i suggest that you see what brushes your favorite artists use and just start learning about them and practicing sculpting by using them you really don't need to learn all of them especially if you're using them for the first time also on the top you can see some settings about your brushes for example you can change the radius or strength of the brushes you use and also if you're using a tablet you can turn on these little pens here so that in this way you can enable pressure sensitivity and also there are other settings here that we don't need them now also on the top right we can see actually the file manager and for example you can see the sphere that we are using it now and in this part if you go to the setting every brushes that you choose you can change its settings here as well for example the radius hardness strength and other things also if you see the top right you can see a few options here if you click on this arrow here you can choose any mat cap that you want actually i use the first two mad caps for the most part and as you know madcap is a way of displaying your object and some of them even have some lights and choosing them is really up to you also as you can see there are some options here that you can play with them and they're not so important in my opinion also there are some options here that if you click on every one of them you can see your object in wireframe mode or material mode or render mode also if you click this arrow here you can change some settings about the viewport for example you can remove x or y axis here or remove or add floor or even remove 3d cursor or origins they are really up to you you should play with them and choose whatever you want okay before starting learning about the brushes i use i should explain something to you as you know every object is made from polygons but for sculpting and for using these brushes here and for creating our favorite object we need more polygons for example if i choose brush or grab brush here and and start working with my object you can see that our object is going to be stretched and we really need more polygons to continue sculpting so mainly there are two ways for adding more polygons into our object the first one is dynamic topology and the next one is remesh first i'm going to show you dynamic topology first of all for starting working with it you should check this box and also you can change the detail size and then choose a brush and start applying it to your object so as you can see when i start working with these brushes in wireframe mode or in shading mode you can see that wherever i apply this brush into my object actually it starts adding more polygons so by using dynamic topology you can add more polygons wherever you use your brush on your object it adds polygons locally you can change detail size and decrease or increase the amount of polygons it adds okay if you want to work with dynamic topology there are some mods that you can choose and work with them you can choose relative detail and in this mode whenever you zoom in to the object it adds more polygons and whenever you zoom out it adds less polygons it's better to follow this tutorial and and do whatever i tell you step by step to understand me better the next mod in dynamic topology is constant detail and in this mode it doesn't matter that you zoom in or zoom out on your object actually it adds the same amount of polygons and the next mod you can use is brush detail and in this mod if you increase the radius of your brush it adds less polygons and if you decrease the radius it adds more polygons so as a result by using dynamic topology you can add more polygons into your objects so that you can sculpt easier the next option is remesh before we go through remesh you should remove this checkbox here and then we start using remesh in remesh you have only one option if you want to use remesh you just need to change the voxel size to whatever you want for example i change it to 0.05 and then you should click on remesh or you should memorize the hotkey which is ctrl r and click on ctrl r to remesh and then in this way you can see that it adds polygons in all part of your objects in the same way and then if you hold shift you can smooth the whole shape and then start sculpting choosing remesh or dynamic topology is really up to you in my opinion it's better to start practicing with both of them and see which one is your favorite and which one is the one that you can work with it easier also another way to change the voxel size in remesh option is to hold shift r and you can see these squares here and you can choose the voxel size and then click ctrl r to remesh and then smooth the whole shape okay now i use remesh for this tutorial and change the voxel size to 0.05 and click ctrl r we want to start learning brushes and my favorite part is about to start wait for it so here there are some options for turning on symmetry and if you turn on x you can work with symmetry with every brush just like this okay guys let's start getting familiar with the brushes i used for the most part the first brush that i use so much i mean i use it all the time it's draw brush when you click and drag your pen on your object you can see that it's adding volume just like this and here is the point guys if you hold ctrl with every brushes you use you can reverse the function of that brush for example if the plus button on the top left is turned on and you hold ctrl with the brush you use instead of adding volume you can carve in the object and also if you hold shift with every brushes that you are using you can activate smooth brush and and it can smooth the whole shape so all the brush settings on the top left is same for all of the brushes for example you can increase and decrease radius and strength and also the hotkey for that is f and shift f but guys believe me you should add a sphere just like me and remash it or use dynamic topology and then smooth the shape and then start practicing with every brushes on the left and for practicing with every brushes you should increase and decrease the size the strength and all the settings about that and just practice on this sphere until you get familiar with that brush okay guys moving on the next brush that i use is draw sharp actually draw sharp is so useful and if you've ever worked with zbrush i can say that it's so similar to them standard brush and here in blender mostly i use draw sharp with small brush size and you can see that how i add volume using draw sharp and then if i hold ctrl and use it i can carve in and then i hold shift to smooth some parts of it and here is another point guys you should learn how to use smooth brush with every brush that you're using we really need smooth brush with every brush that we are working with and if the strength of smooth brush is too high you can go to smooth brush and decrease the strength of it because we don't want to use smooth brush to make the object so flat we just want to smooth it a little bit after working with another brushes and i really really suggest you guys that you follow my steps right now turn on your laptop or tablet or whatever and just start practicing step by step you should really focus on practicing with every brush that i show you without ever thinking about starting sculpting a new object first you should get familiar to every brush that i show you and here in this tutorial i'm going to show you all the brushes that i use for my sculpting here you can see that how i play with brush size or strength of this brush to show you exactly how it works and you really don't need to learn other brushes and use them for sculpting a new 3d object i suggest that you first practice with these brushes and then when you move to advanced level in sculpting maybe sometimes in some models you need to use other brushes but now you really don't need the next brush that sometimes i use is clay brush it's a really useful brush as well it's really up to you that you like to work with it or not this brush adds volume to your 3d object like this and moving on the next brush is clay strips brush it's so similar to clay brush and it works like this it adds volume like this and also there are so many people that love to work with clay strips brush and i myself it really depends on the sculpting that i'm gonna work with it but also it's a really useful brush for example when you are sculpting the face you can use it like this to carve this area for the eyes okay now the next brush that i use is inflate brush this brush actually inflate the area that you're sculpting it for example if you sculpt these lines with draw brush and then smooth it a little bit you can then use inflate brush on these lines and push the volume out just like this the next brush that is really really useful is crease brush mostly i use this brush with small size and i create these lines like this also i can hold ctrl with this brush and carving and then again for example if i add volume like this using draw brush then i can use crisp brush and create these small lines for example for creating eyelets and sculpting eyes and then use smooth brush and here again i should tell you that you should practice a lot with these brushes to get used to them and the next brush that i use most of the time like always is smooth brush and when you're using with every brush in blender if you hold shift with that brush you can switch to smooth brush and smooth the shade okay the next brush that i use is scrape brush which is a really really useful brush and i like it so much it's one of my favorites and for example if you add volume with draw brush on this sphere you can then switch to scrape brush and as you can see scrape brush can make the surface so flat as you can see i'm using scrape brush to flatten the area the next brush that i use a lot is pinch brush for example if you create these lines with crease brush you can then choose pinch brush and make the lines sharper and smaller i mean you can use pinch brush to make the lines cleaner sharper and bring them closer and then you can use smooth brush and make it so clean and here it is the next brush is grab brush it's a brush that you should use all the time so you should get familiar with it and it's so similar to move brush in zbrush by using wrap brush you can move your shape everywhere you want you can change the size and move the part that you want wherever you want and for example guys if i want to show you exactly how it works for example i can show you how we can make the base mesh for the face from a sphere just like this as you can see i'm just using grab brush and move the shape and move the parts that i want to make the base mesh and i'm not gonna exactly sculpt a base mesh for you and i'm not gonna go through that exactly step by step because i'm just gonna show you how these brushes can work and you should practice until next week because my next video is about how we can use these brushes exactly to sculpt a head from sphere and now you should focus on learning these brushes and working with them on a sphere just as i told you about and wait for my next video so make sure to practice with me the next brush that sometimes i use it is elastic deform brush it's similar to grab brush but it's not exactly like that by using this brush you can move the part of your 3d object to wherever you want elastically and also the next brush that sometimes i use is snake hook brush it's a really useful brush as well it works like this it adds volume like this to your 3d object but you should pay attention because after adding volume like this you should add more polygons in some parts so you should remesh again by hitting ctrl r and then hold shift to smooth the whole shape the next brush and the last brush i use a lot is mask brush and we use it a lot you should you should really get familiar with it also it has some hot keys and you should memorize them for example if you want to activate mask brush you should hit m on your keyboard and then start masking your 3d object like this and then if you tap alt to m you can clear your mask so again i click m and start masking this area and then if you click ctrl i you can reverse the mask like this and here for example for adding ear you can mask and then reverse the mask like this and then choose grab brush and drag the volume to the outside and then click alt m to clear your mask and then you can smooth the shape as you can see we can use it a lot so you should practice with it so it has some hotkeys for example when you mask this area if you click a you can see these options appear here on the screen and these are some options for activating different features of your masking brush for example you can grow mask sharpen your mask shrink it or clear it or decrease or increase or invert your mask please guys just work with these options here and see how it works because the next week we're gonna use it a lot for sculpting a base head also there are some options here which is box mask that if you choose it you can create a box mask like this or you can use lasso mask and create a mask like this but the features are the same and the hotkeys are the same as well and here is another point that you should know is that if you want to assign a hotkey to the brushes that you use for the most part you should go on the brush that you want and right click on it and click on assign shortcuts and then choose your favorite shortcut and then you can use it for speed up your workflow so i explained every brushes that i use for sculpting and if i'm gonna review them so fast i would say the first brush that i use is draw brush for example i can carve this area for the eyes and then hold shift to smooth area guys this is not exactly the base mesh for the head or the face just consider this object as a pretty sphere that i'm gonna show you my brushes on it in a more practical way add some volume for the eyes by using draw brush and then i'm just gonna use draw sharp for creating the eyelids and then i'm just gonna hold ctrl and use clay strips to carve this area and then i'm gonna use smooth brush and decrease the strength of it and smooth the whole shape and then by using scrape brush i can create some planes like this and make these parts so flat and then use smooth brush to smooth them and then for example you can use inflate brush and inflate these areas like this and then i'm gonna use grease brush in this area and then smooth it and then i'm gonna use pinch brush here and bring the edges closer and make the lines cleaner and then by using grab brush i can move some parts of the head or the chain or even the cheeks like this or even you can use elastic deform brush and move it like this and also by using snake hook brush i can add some volume here and then click ctrl r to remesh and smooth them and also i can click m to mask this area for the nose and then ctrl i to reverse the mask and then by using grab brush i can drag the volume to the outside and make the nose and play with the shape and then click alt m to clear the mask and then again by using grab brush i can make the nose like this and move some parts of the nose to the right left or wherever i want and with inflate brush i can inflate these parts and then by holding ctrl and using draw brush i can make these holes here for the nose and then smooth them and then in the right view i can make the shape like this by using grab brush and also by using mask and clicking on m you can mask this area and then and then control i to reverse the mask and then by using grab brush you can pull out the neck like this and then alt m to clear the mask okay guys as you can see in this quick review i showed you again all the brushes that i use for the most part for sculpting head body or any other character i want so you just need to focus on these brushes because these are the most useful brushes for sculpting and i believe by practicing you can easily learn how they work and use them for sculpting many characters so just follow me step by step again in this tutorial and start practicing with these brushes that i showed you on a sphere and get familiar with them and just wait for my next tutorial which would be sculpting the base head for a stylized character if you like this tutorial and it's been useful for you please don't forget to subscribe my channel hit the like button and feel free to ask me any question that you want in the comments
