This game is so, so fun. Excited to hear what Rhado thinks!

Man it looks like a great game, and I love Race for the Galaxy, but I've had such rotten luck at introducing people to it. It's maybe my favorite card game but I haven't found a single person yet who enjoys it like I do. I'm worried about having the same experience with Roll even though it seems nicely streamlined and more intuitive (like produce coming before ship).

I like the concept of easier/quicker dice games, but there's no way this beats out Race for me. Race (the base game at least) is about as easy to set up as it gets, just two decks of cards and some tokens.

For games like Pandemic or Nations, at least you get a shortened playtime with less table space when playing the dice version.

Roll does look like a lot of fun though and I would be happy to play it.

I really wanna buy the game, but I didn't find it anywhere (Germany), but on is the Amazon marketplace for the equivalent of $73, which is a bit steep for my tastes.

I love this game. It has the feel of Race but is just a different beast. It also is a very innovative "dice" version of a game. Instead of using the standard Yahtzee mechanism it uses something totally different and it's amazing.

Really considering picking this one up. Is it worth it for 2-player? Race seemed like such a ball-ache to get into but I think I could really get into this :).

Woot! Our copy arrived today! :o

The component quality is amazing. Basically the only thing I could critzicize is that there's no spare dice because you know, dice. They get lost surprisingly fast.

hey everybody today righto runs through roll for the galaxy the long long long long awaited dice version of the modern classic race for the galaxy and I'm gonna be doing a two-player run three days you guys can find out if it's been worth the wait spoiler alert it definitely has oh my gosh this game is so good oops let's cut out the bag there let's get going alright so when you doing a two-player run-through today I am the green player Jin is the blue player and as you can see as part of setup everybody gets one of these very big very thoroughly annotated screens because when we roll we do it in secret and once everybody is assigned the dice that they've got they're going to use it around everybody pulls back the screen and reveals what they've done and now these are actually kind of big and cumbersome so I'm just going to move them out of the way but bear in mind normally all the action I'll be doing would be done behind closed doors but let's actually take a look at the screen because there's a lot of information here I mean it wouldn't be erased for the galaxy style game if there weren't tons of icons all over the place right up here there's a nice little reminder of how you set up the game to start everybody gets three white dice in the cup two more white dice in their citizenry one faction one homeworld and we have one the diamond and the circle one colony they're working on and one scientific development are working on and then also everybody starts with one buck so I've done most oh I've done some of that here's the one buck and Jin's got her one buck I've got three dice and then two more actually one thing I gotta say about these I love these little meeples cuz correct me if I'm wrong tell me I'm crazy doesn't that kind of look like my righto runs through logo look he's running he's got the ball up I think it's neat anyway I'm sure a total coincidence total coincidence anyway so we need to each of us get our starting faction and our starting homeworld so I will turn out to be what am i I am the mining industry on the meteorite planet Jen ah Jie is the space pirates operating from the hidden fortress okay and then we also get a homeworld which in my case is Epsilon Eridani and Jen's will be Earth's Lost Colony okay and now the rest of these are out of the game now these might have given us some special bonus Powerball like this meteorite planet that I've got access to gain one rare element Brown dye into your citizenry at the start of the game so that means I get an extra die and also Epsilon Eridani says get a blue and a red die into my citizenry all right so I've got a few more people that I could recruit although I won't be able to do that right away on the first round all we're doing is rolling these three dice but eventually I want to get these into my Cup as well I see and then also as I'm a miner forty-niner I've got a special power whenever I consume goods if they are goods made of the brown dye therefore yeah they are rare elements I make an extra buck above and beyond what one would normally make let's see now Jen over here she's the space pirate she gets one extra red dye and it goes in Sisson tree and Earth Lost Colony says she gets one novelty good on this world at the start of the game so that means we take a blue dye and Jen's already got some goods that she could ship or consume to make money or victory points off of Earth Lost Colony and then she also has a power during the shipping phase she gets a buck instantly for every two red dice she's got in her citizenry so that means during shipping when people are you know zipping all over the galaxy carrying goods around if Jen left a couple of red dice over here they will act as pirates and go out and score her some money all right so now there's one other thing as I said in addition to starting with a faction and a homeworld we each also have to have one development and one calling and so we go to the massive bag of tiles is the biggest bag I've ever seen in a board game and we're each going to draw two randomly and let's see what I got I got this tile and this tile now all the tiles are two-sided every tile you can either look at it as a world that you can colonize which means it's round circle side and this thing is worth five points at the end of the game or it can be a technology this technology worth 1 point ok so I've got these two tiles and each one is a world and Technology and I have to pick one of them to be a technology and one of them to be a world let's see here now if either of these starting ones gave me more Brown dice because I'm a miner I would definitely choose that but doesn't look like it them do this one lets me this technology diversification lets me reassign um white dice let's see and as a world gain one dollar and a green good on this world when you place it so I'd get a green dye and a dollar for colonizing the lost species Ark world I seen in this technology one dollar after completing any world if completing a rare elements world hey you know what I want to do rare element world because then I can get more rare element dice which works for me so I think I'll do this technology I'll have some terraforming robots that sounds like it's a nice thematic fit with my mining industry and that means well then I'm giving up diversification and my other one has to be the lost barque world ok now Jen she's got draw two as well let's see what she gets she gets Universal exports and alright hmm let's see here hey right off the bat now Jen as a pirate she wants more red dice I think she's gonna try and get some runaway robots because that will get her another red dye which means this didn't even look at what the other technology was she's going to go into space tourism um no doubt a Pirates of the Caribbean style theme park based on her piracy exploits ok right now these have not actually been discovered or colonized yet these are in process these the ones we've got and now we are fully set up ready to go and if we come back over here we can see then in a given round the first thing we do is we roll in secret and then we assign our workers in secret then we reveal and that's when we discover what's actually going to happen in which phases are going to activate then we do the phases that have been activated then we manage our Empire which is a little bit of cleanup at the end of the round and we're going to keep doing this you know that over and over again until one of two things happens either player has successfully built 12 tiles and beginning the game this counts is three of my 12 tiles so as soon as somebody builds 9 more tiles I triggers the end of the game alternatively if all of these victory points have been gobbled up then that can trigger the end of the game as well and I me others with more players there's more victory points but the shooting for 12 tiles total is the same regardless of player comp ok you've been patient long enough it's time to roll them spaced bones let's see what I get and now and again remember I would be rolling behind my screen but I've got nothing to hide from you folks I see you now Jen she's gonna roll as well alrighty now again in secret and now this game does require a bit of trust because since you are manipulating your dice behind the screen if if you're playing with a low-down dirty scoundrel they say oh I don't like that they could just change stuff around but hopefully you're playing with people you trust like I always do so here's the three dice I've got now the first thing you do once you roll is you assign them to their matching symbols so that means this turn you know these are the populace that I have recruited to do work for me right now and I could do some development I could do some settling and I could do some production ok and I can't do any exploring or any shipping now what I've got to choose is the first thing I do once I've rolled well as I line them all up now the second thing I do is I take any one of my dice and I take it and I basically convert it into a wild so if I don't really feel like producing this turn although you know I could produce I could produce some stuff over here on this meteorite planet because in the same way that Jen has some goods already on this blue on Earth's Lost Colony I could produce some goods on my meteorite planet which I could then later on sell but here's the thing remember when I consume goods I produced I want to get my bonus by using the brown dye so since I don't have my brown dye in action yet I think I'm not going to want to produce anything because then I would just be blocking up my space because altering I want to produce over here with my brown dye so I have to pick one of these three dice move it but now this dice is a wild it could be any of these five symbols that I want in this game you have a surprising amount of control over the dice you roll so I could now and what that means is I'm going to take this and I can put it on explore develop settle produce or ship and specifically that means I am picking one of the five phases that will activate this turn as you can see at the beginning all the phases are turned off and after everybody reveals we'll find out what phases are actually gonna happen now since I happen to roll develop you know I rolled a developed eye I think hmm do I want to develop mm-hmm well okay to it I'm going to take this and I'm gonna you know and it doesn't matter what it was originally it was this but now that I've taken it it's a wild card I can consider anything and by putting it here I've effectively converted it into a triangle it looks like this but it counts as a development action alright and what that means is once we reveal everything because I chose development I'm going to flip this and everybody at the table knows hey we've got a chance to develop our technologies this turn because I've chosen that now Jen doesn't know the development is coming and I'm not done yet so now what this means is I actually when the development phase happens I have to development actions I can do but here's my problem I've only got one technology to develop so developing twice is kind of wasteful because you know once I actually say I'm going to develop this die which counts as one of my two development workers will just say all tundra do I'll come over here and I'll develop your robots he'll be he'll then retire he'll come back over to the citizenry he'll be done and I'll have gotten this and since I don't have any more tiles to develop this other one will have been wasted and that's terribly wasteful so I'm going to do another little shuck and dive in addition so the first thing you do is after you roll you and you've lined everything up you take one of the dice turn it into a wild card and that is you declaring what phase is going to happen so I took this produce I'm not going to produce and I said hey there's going to be development and this is the development action this is a wasted development action for me because of my technology so there's another thing you do and it's listed right here you every round you can dictate you can pick one of your remaining dice and turn them into a dictator for a day and what that means is you pick them up and you put them over here you can only do this with one die now that means this die is used up it can't be used for anything originally it was going to help me settle the lost species Ark rolled I was going to start working towards this five point tile but I have I've removed this so I'm not going to settle and instead when you dictate that means you can reassign another worker in this case this guy to any column you want so I had three dice but I have modified all of my dice I started out like this and then the first thing is I turn this into a diamond into a develop I turn this into a dictator and then my dictator let me turn this into anything I want because I a second develop wasn't going to do me any good so now what else do I wanna do now here's where I have to start reading Jen's mind because I now what I want to do is I want to guess what do I think Jen is going to do because if I set my worker if I think Jen is going to explore then I want to turn this over here into an explorer because that means when Jen triggers the explore phase I will get to follow along and I'll get to do some exploration now it's early in the game I don't one thing I do now see Jen she might want to develop this stuff she might want to ship her good so she can get some victory points or some extra money that might be something she wants to do or maybe she'll want to explore you know what I'm just gonna hope she explores because if she explores and again this is all secret I don't know what she's doing but she triggers the exploration phase then I will get to do some exploring myself which will be nice so now that's it I'm done I've done all this in secret and now I wait for all the other players now let's see what did Jen get she got wow she almost got the exact same thing as me okay now what does she want to do well I think the thing she wants to do as fast as possible she wants to develop this runaway robot because that will get her a second red dye and as soon as she remember her special power is two red dice in her citizenry in this space will allow her to start doing space piracy and make extra money so Jen definitely wants to do a settle she the world of the runaway robots Jen wants to settle that planet and so November the first thing you do is you line them up then you pick one of your dice and so says say Jen is going to pick this die hmm hmm well okay so Jen can take this die and then say she's going to activate settling or she could take this die and activate settling now whichever one she chooses that means she's got two dice because again which every time she takes becomes a wild card and so she's converting what was an explore into a settle a settlement action so if Jen does this she is going to activate settlement which means when we reveal she'll say hey we're all going to settle and I'll be really sad because I can't do any settlement actions unlike Jen but Jen wants to do this because member she needs two actions so these two actions will settle this and so really Jen's big decision is she's keeping this here she's happy about that is she also going to develop so that she can start working on this space tourism or will she do this so that she can explore and which means she can draw more tiles or make more money but here's the thing um Jen she could leave this here and then what she's secretly hoping is that I'm going to explore because and I think that's what she's going to do she's going to establish settlement she definitely wants to settle she she can wait on space tourism for a while that's not a really really you know high-priority thing for her to do so she's knock so she's not gonna develop so she'll convert this development into a wild card and so now if she wants you she can even flip this like this but it's not really important the important thing actually and I would recommend you don't do it so you can remember in case you're changing your mind right what was my original thing so she's converting this into a cell she's got two settlement actions and she's leaving this alone all right so now everybody looks around the table everybody says we're done everybody reveals and what we see is I'm doing development and Jen chose settlement and both Jen and I are incredibly bummed because we were both hoping that the other person would trigger and explore but neither of us did so this died in this die the Jen and I both set aside won't do anything because there's no explore action however there's still a chance this is only in a two-player again with three or four players you don't do this been a two-player game you set aside one die that is kind of a stand-in for a third player and everyday after everybody reveals their what what they chose because you can only choose one I chose develop Jen so settle we see what the dummy player chooses and the dummy player chose shipping and we're bummed again because what we were hoping is the dummy player and it's weird there's a there's a one in three chance that the dummy player would have chosen explore and so we would have gotten we both would have gotten a chance to explore but the dummy player said I want a ship and so these are the three phases that will happen this round we will not be exploring which means we both wasted this die nor will we be producing okay so now everything is all out in the open and everybody can simultaneously go through we skip exploring so that means these dice that both of us assign they don't get to do anything and whenever one of your dice fails to do anything that goes back in the cup so you'll have it again for a future round okay so both of us get a die back now let's move on to develop Jen isn't doing any developing but I am I am doing one development action which means I'm going to spend it over here and I have successfully developed this level one technology now whenever a die doesn't do anything it goes back in the cup whenever a die does successfully finish a job it goes back home it basically retires back to the citizenry and so you don't have access to that die anymore but I have successfully now developed terraforming robots okay and I don't get anything immediately but during the settlement phase when I'm colonizing planets in the future I get one dollar after completing any world if it had if it was a rare world now unfortunately this is not a brown world this is a green world so if I settle this planet I won't get any of my extra money I want to settle brown planets but I'll worry about that later anyway so I've gotten this and also by the way I've scored one point at this point in the game I've got one two three four five six points to Jen's four points alright so that was it I did development Genda now we move on settling I don't I ignore this because I'm not set on anything but hey look at this jen has two settlement actions so she comes over here and spends him on the one-way robots and these guys go back gaggle retire with a satisfaction of a job well done because they have developed runaway robots which gives Jen two points so now she's sitting at six points and her bonus is she gets a red military dye and it goes immediately into the cup Boop and now Jen's kind of bummed is if this red military dye went over here into her citizenry he's okay so we're done settling nobody's producing and then shipping now nobody said a dye on the shipping so we aren't gonna doing shipping but remember Jen special power is during the shipping phase if she has to red dice here she makes a buck for doing some space piracy but unfortunately this dye went into the cup so she doesn't have access to it after all so the shipping phase which the dummy player chose is not going to happen because nobody did it now that was it so we have not we revealed our workers then we've done all five phases and now at the end of the round we manage our empires which means we can recruit more citizens we can also recall citizens we reset the tiles to set up for the next round and we see if anybody has triggered the end of the game so first off well I can recruit more assistants now next round currently I'm only roll by the way my dictator I forgot to mention he he did his job he said job well done and he goes home as well so now currently for the next round I'm only going to get to roll one die that is not very good I am not happy about that at all but that's where recruitment comes in at this point for every space buck I spend I can recruit another die so I am going to recruit I'm gonna spend my $1 I have and now that means I can recruit any of these guys and throw them into the cups so I'll be at least rolling two dice next round now and then the question is which one do I recruit and that comes down to all the different dice different guy scouts have different likelihoods if I recruit that red die I'm more likely to be able to develop or settle if I recruit the brown die I'm more likely going to develop and there's no way it would ever settle and so on so now what do I want to do well the interesting thing is what I want to do next turn really badly is explore because I want to go explore and find a brown world so that I can i colonize it I can take advantage of my terraforming robots now the white dice remember I said they have a 33% chance of giving me the Explorer but if I really want to double down and really ensure I have I get more exploring chances maybe I want to throw another white dye in but let's see I might want to get this brown dye in because the sooner I get this brown dye on to producing Goods and I produce over here remember when I consume Brown Goods um or oh actually oh wait man women I don't have to use a dye it could be anything from this planet this phase yeah it just says it has to be something that came from a brown world whether it was a brown dye or not oops I misspoke there earlier this is first time I'd seen the mining industry sorry folks so you know what I think I'll set this aside for now I will go on ahead because I really want to up my chances of getting good exploration so I spent my space dollar to get another white dye because that really ups my chance of exploring now there's a special thing if at the end of a turn you are ever at zero bucks you can see there's this little reminder here that you get one dollar income for free so every round guaranteed you'll always be able to buy at least one die now Jen she's got the same she's got two dice in a cup I think she's gonna spend a dollar and she wants to leave this red die here so that it has the opportunity hmm although the nice thing about red dice is they are much quicker much better much more likely to produce you know red dice have a higher likelihood to do development and settle so if Jen wants to finish this space tourism really quickly she might want to throw the red dye in because that ups your chances of getting more developments but I think she'll take a white anyway alright and then now that she's broke she gets one dollar automatically for free okay now if Jen wanted this blue dye that's sitting around is a good waiting to be shipped or consumed she could recall this if she wanted and throw it into her cup as well but she I mean she has do that because that's actually you know she'll eventually be able to get some points or money so she'll leave that there now we've got to reset all these and um check to see if the end game now at this point if either of us have 12 tiles built or if either or if all the victory points are gone the game is over but obviously we're just getting started and that folks was the first of many rounds of roll through the galaxy now if you'd like I'm going to do extended play through I'm going to play through at least probably two maybe even three more rounds because I want to demonstrate all the other actions exploring producing and shipping you've seen development and sell but you haven't seen the others so if you want to see how the other stuff works especially Explorer which is a really important one and I really want to explore to get a better on planet you can hit the buttons on screen to go to the extended play through right now or alternatively you just want to hear what Jenna I think well actually what I think is Jen hasn't played this game yet what I think you can do the other button go straight to final thoughts your choice in five four three two one
