it looks like we've got our first cars rolling on to pit road getting out onto the track remember this is the very first group group 1a pre-1940 sports racing and touring cars those from 1927 and 1951 racing cars as well the oldest car in this field from 1910 that's a national Speedway a roadster working their way all the way up through the early 50s great selection of cars ponch you can holtz in number 26 that's a 1950 talbo t26 then John Carr & Carr 32 a 1932 Miller Scofield Jamie Clary is there and a 1932 Studebaker Indy right beside him is max Jameson in a 1935 Ford sprint racer you Daniel goes driving car number two that's a 1933 Maserati 4cm and Charles McCabe in car 10 a 1936 er a ber a is English racing automobiles patents dowling and a 1934 er eh this one's an r2 a a number of ER a s in this event followed by Gregory wooden at 19 1935 er a type beam Andrew Larson's driving in 1927 bugatti type 37 s car 3-0 and david doufu in 38 a 1936 Tommo Lago t26 Ivan's a rumba 1935 Railton LST some cars you will never see anyplace else and AB you got a 37 a right beside the blue comacchio so carbon 21 paul émile Bessette in in 1936 delage 1500 SB that is Brian Blaine in 18 a a 1916 Romano Sturdevant that's powered by a surplus aircraft engine from World War and that wasn't uncommon after World War one to get those surplus engines and put them in cars and use them as their racing engines 1927 Buick big car big Jim curve by Charles Wentworth Dunkin fair clouded a 1934 Aston Martin the 1935 Bugatti Type 57 Mike gertner car 12 and Richard Jeffery in car 171 a 1936 purpose-built 5 1935 Alta Grand Prix being driven by Michelle Hido Nigel bachelor as a 1928 Bentley tourer 1915 Ford race car drove my head Archard car number 4 he transports that car on the vintage truck to each track Glen our back in car 54 a 1938 Aston Martin 2 liter katarina Kiev Ola from Hamburg Germany in 1920 bentley 4.5 litre right there and logan Calkins is in a 1935 Aston Martin 7 Erik Ramos driving car number 17 that's a 1916 national a/c that's a two-man car riding mechanic goes along just to change tires because they had a lot of flats he also pumped kept the oil pressure up and the fuel pressure and served as the rearview mirror car number 16 Jim Putnam a 1920 Packard 30 and we're not gonna make it all the way through the field because we have a green flag and we are racing here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca the very first race of the weekend at the Reunion once again for those pre-war racers that are out on the track right now what a view as they go down into the Andretti hairpin that's a double apex corner they come out into to look like is the Miller out front or it could be an ER a we'll have to wait until we get a bit of rule a better look at the number it is car number 18 that is leading food out there that's the Studebaker IndyCar that was built from I think 1932 that 1932 Studebaker Indy it's interesting here because you actually have some cars that have multiple numbers you have an 18 a 18 B or 18 it looks like we're we've got a car that's trying to line up for a pass for the lead that number 26 that 1950 Taobao t 26 being driven by hans Hugin howe trying to line up behind that Studebaker Indy car as they go up the hill that Thabo a beautiful car looks like a Grom free car of that era now closes up behind that Studebaker Indy as they go through turn six they're getting to the highest part of the track that famous corkscrewed here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca little foggier up at the top of the hill looks like the town Beau's got to get inside and try and get make the pass just for they crest the hill and you've got a new leader as they start down the hill through the corkscrew if you're down at the start/finish area you'll see them pop into view when they go under the Wayne bridge and come back any of you have turn nine that off-camber left-hand turn it's interesting looking at the center of gravity on these two cars once again you've got that Maserati with a nice low center of gravity and then the the part of the talbo with a nice low center of gravity followed by that 1932 Studebaker Indy with a higher look where the driver sits compared to that that that talbo well it's also a much smaller car and but one thing I like about these older cars with the open cockpit you can really see the drivers working you can see them wrestling with that wheel really working hard to keep that car pointed in the right direction that looks like Patton's Dowling in the number seven car he is always quick that's a 1934 er ar2a er a as you mentioned stood for English racing automobiles quite a very successful manufacturer in its day and then once again we've got a number of them out here this weekend that will see everything for them 19:35 type er a type B through the various version that they went through through all those years [Applause] it looks like diamonds gonna make a move on that Studebaker pretty quickly he has caught up to him looks like a shop Rab shop rag came out from underneath one of the cars they're going through turn five now starting their climb up the hill and it is the Jambo out front of you can Holtz car number 26 that's the table OT 26 out front believe it's the patterns Dowling now listed in second spot as he must have gotten around the Studebaker we missed that that must have been up on the hill Studebaker Indy now dropped another spot car number 2 running in the third spot it's important to point out when we talk about this as racing in reality especially with these pre-war machines yes the goal is to get ahead of the car ahead of you but it is not true wheel to wheel banging where it wheels the way it might be done when these cars were brand new there you see the morning fog here at Laguna Seca kind of an eerie sight as they come out of the mist and the fog and work their way around the track that will burn off as you can see looks like the leader go down through the corkscrew that's Charles McCabe in another er a that we're getting a picture of that looks like a Miller or one of the specials here there were a lot of specials in those days that were home-built cars or backyard specials there have been called but look at that Ford come through there car number 11 yeah that's car in once again we have multiple numbers for the same car we got 11 and 11 a that 11 a is a 1935 Ford Sprint racer originally a track built sprint car back in 1935 it's a pre-war Ford with front and rear mounted suspension under a reinforced Model T frame lot of those cars were built with Ford parts that were very big and racing they raced them on dirt they raised him on ovals and there were a lot of special ability using Ford components but it still Hugin Holt's leading the group in that number twenty-six car that's the 1950 talbo t 26 that is an absolutely beautiful car it just looks menacing when it's sitting still Patton's Dowling's close to within just over a second of human holes and may challenge for the lead before this race is over this is a 20-minute racing Brian Blaine trying to close in in the number 18 car he's another two and a half seconds back then was in the battle right now for sixth and seventh at 11 a car being driven by max Jameson it's at 1935 Ford sprint racer that we were talking about and dick as you mentioned it's a great way to be able to see the driver watch him work as he goes through the turns you see almost every ounce of that driver I the only thing you really can't see is his feet as he's driving by and right behind him is Jamie Cleary in that 1932 Studebaker Indy car yeah you'll see the drivers in his office so to speak and you can see I'm using body English too when they turn the wheel they also kind of lean over like they're trying to will the car to move looks like it's the Sturdevant that's parked over on the side going up the hill evidently with mechanical difficulties he's out of harm's way he's off course drivers left he'll be safe there until this session is complete there goes a leader under the start/finish lap Hugin holes in the talbo little austin nippy they just go screaming by Dowling's has really closed the gap it's down to less than half a second he's got to try and make a movement they go down into the Andretti hairpin he can't make it on the outside let's see if he can dive inside of them as they come through that double apex corner he's gonna have to tuck in behind him as they go into turn three now they're going through the infield and will soon be passing under the tire bridge this is a nice flat stretch in the infield your gun holes holding Dowling off but not by much looks like about 3/10 of a second now as it goes you turn fourth bit of a straightaway there make that Bank left-hander turn five to head up the hill to the corkscrew it's interesting to look at where he has an advantage on the track because you would think that number twenty six car the tailbone would have an advantage pretty much all the way around especially with that lower center of gravity now the issue too is they're coming up with all these back markers and you'll notice that often times as they pass the back markers the slower cars those guys will get out of the way they'll wave to the drivers the lead cars telling them which side to go around making sure that they know that they're there so there's a lot of genuine gentlemanly actions that are done here at the track on the track while these cars are going around but in the meantime you've got a battle for the lead between those two cars that elbow and the ER a and they are encountering traffic and it's going to be easier for Dowling in that PRA to get around cars and you can fit that car into a smaller hole than that Talbot which is a big car the other thing you've got to consider is that Taobao is about 16 or 17 years newer than the ER they so it's got a little bit more technology in it but two totally different types of car that tombow essentially is a Grand Prix car or the ER a was a sports racer they're coming down now into turn 11 and up the start/finish straight away we'll check the lead this time as they cross the line it will show us the gap from timing and scoring it was three tenths of a second last time I think it's opened up a little bit as a result of the traffic they've encountered yeah now it's down to it's up to I should say 1.5 second the gap between the leader 26 and the second-place car of dialling number seven well the leader Hugin holds really got the attention to that back marker as he was going around I think the back marker was expecting human hope to go to the inside of the turn and instead Hugin holds went around the outside and for just a moment I think the the back part was really surprised there they watching Hugin halt as he works that wheel and there's that that sign from the driver that's being passed how much you can hold is working the wheels he goes around this Laguna Seca racetrack yeah they're going to be in traffic for the remainder of this race and both Hugin Holt's and downing got a little bit squirrely as they got to the nto Carson Dalian is closed back up on you can holds as a boat pass a look one of the cars number 77 as they come up the hill heading through turn six now heading to the corkscrew down and right in the wheel tracks looks to the inside as they go up with his note is the Rey Hall straight that leads them to the top of the hill and it looks like downing is gonna make the move you got inside and dives in as they start down through the corkscrew new leader but that won't be official until he crosses the start/finish line that elbow with the lower center of gravity the greater racing technology and football event of 1950 to be able to blow off the doors of that 1934 car but instead its patents dowling in the 1934 ER a the r2a which has taken the lead in this timed race and that talbo has a four and a half liter engine and the ER a only 1,500 cc's but the key is it's lighter and much more nimble but it looks like patents that looks like human Holt's has his hand in the air do we have a yellow flag condition on the track yeah we do not sure we've already seen a couple cars that have been off to the side not sure what's causing this yellow flag we haven't gotten word yet with a yellow flag all drivers must hold our position it's number 18 looks like he's off somewhere in the dirt and he's probably in an impact area that's why they threw the yellow flag out there it's a good possibility as someone else goes off they will collect him during a yellow flag period cars must maintain position you cannot pass another car you just have to follow the car in front of you until the and the green is displayed again then you can go back to racing yeah you saw that car that was sitting off the side that was the number 18 car [Applause] pretty well early on at the race and unfortunately today has come to an end but hopefully we'll get it sorted out and back out there this afternoon and that's another interesting picture of technology those racers following the pace car as it goes around the track yeah there's a three wheeler behind one of the rescue trucks a Morgan three-wheeler home we've got a video now of that Studebaker nd going off no it's not the Studebaker Indy I'm sorry it was the number 18 car yeah that's the number 18 the Studebaker Indy car so it's a Studebaker okay so he just lost control coming out of the turn very slightly but you can see he had a very minor impact up against the wall hopefully not a lot of damage but you can see exactly what happened now they're trying to sort out the field as they go around he's coming down the hill it happened coming out of the corkscrew he lost it and tried to correct and couldn't do it in the car slid off drivers right and looks like he hit the dirt bank over there yeah you want to avoid all impact but while they have the the yellow flag out the full course yellow they're also going to take the opportunity to get that other car that's been sitting out there see if they can't get him back into the into the garage area once again you pointed out that that is a car that has both a driver and a riding mechanic riding mechanic in the early days of racing was very common I'll of course we all know the story of Ray Haroon in the very first Indy 500 when he won the race as a solo driver every other car of that race had both a driver and a riding mechanic ray Haroon in the eleven 8,500 driving the Marmon wasp officially credited with inventing the rear-view mirror so that he could drive all by himself it was pretty brutal on him that day and fact he got into a coughing fit in the victory circle that day and basically said I'm done with racing but it was from that point on drive it it's the Indy 500 they had had both a driver and a riding mechanic and the riding mechanic had multiple jobs he was the rear view here he was the person who had to look around figure out whether there were any cars coming up that they were going to pass whatever it may be but they also worked as a mechanic they would have to loop put you know oil into the engine they would have to make sure the transmission was working properly and occasionally they would have to massage the hands of the drivers whose hand was on the steering wheel and you can imagine the pounding at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway of going over those bricks so the riding mechanic was a pretty critical job absolutely also kept the fuel pressure up by bumpy and in those days there were a lot of flat tires and it came in very handy and the helping changed tires because a lot of them you will see the older pictures had dual spares on the back of the car and they didn't need them over a long distance race so a critical job riding mechanic and you aren't just sitting there as a passenger you were busy all the time looks like we're into the final five minutes of this not sure how much time is left actually but we're nearing we're still under the yellow flag because of that incident up on the hill we're car did make contact with the ball the Alexis pace car is still leading the field around the track and everyone following in formation as I mentioned in a yellow flag situation you are not allowed to improve your position you just have to follow the car in front of you pace car now leads them out of the Andretti hairpin through to and heading down into turn three if they do get a chance to go green that's going to be interesting to watch when they get that green flag because that table should have superior acceleration it's got about three liters more engine size than that er a but for now it's lead and follow it's darling in the seven car then human in 26 Brian Blaine in 1883 ghosts in number 2 running in the forest pot the Charles Mackay then kind of the tunnel but he gets another er a running in the fifth position in six we'll get a 1935 Ford sprint racer paper by Max Jameson David do do is at a 1936 talbo Lago t26 a place right now is Ivan Zaremba a 1935 Railton LST in ninth is Luca Macchio so from night with in 1928 Bugatti 37 a and rounding out the top ten is Andrew Larsen in the 1927 bugatti type 37 there's that Archer we see on our screen now in that model a racer he was coming into turn five I think a couple of years ago in that car number four is the one we're talking about when he lost a wheel on that car going into five and in fact the first that he knew he had lost the wheel was when it passed him and going into the turn that's a well-balanced car and that car was originally raised in Southern California it was restored 1968 and competed in Calistoga and San Jose Sears Point Monterey but in dabit poison it's really completed Omo in a lot of places around the country so it's a quiet but a career in its second life shall we say and you can see the crank hanging out in front of that car I think the ers have a crank also hanging out in front of the car you get look at the front end when they come by your position a couple of the vintage Bentley's they're four and a half litre cars I believe as they come through yeah there's a crank on at archers cart he transports that car on the vintage Ford truck he actually drives it up on the back of that truck and that's how he drives it to and from the races he and his wife dress and appropriately period clothing as well got a big handlebar mustache great guy to talk to you stop by and see him in the paddock if you're here and chat with him he'd be happy to talk to you and talk about his car we were watching a nineteen buek Adi the car number twelve a 1935 you got 80 57 driving around the track and once again as you watch these cars drive here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca it is truly a look back in history both for automotive design technical design everything as you watch them go around and unfortunately I'm not sure whether we're gonna get any more green flag racing because we're reaching the very in and in fact we have the checkered flag out and it looks like Patton's Dowling and that 1934 er ar2a is going to get the victory and you see the two of them that's where the great thing about this they kind of looked at each other when you know I guess it's over but we really wanted to have one more lap where we can have a little bit of fun you got a nice Hans Hogan hold who kind of gave him a nice little wave saying it's okay well we'll get another chance to do it on another day well cars are back on track now we have the the second race of the day now this is group 2a for 1955 through 1961 sports cars now these are both under and over 2,000 CCS now looking at the list is we've got Greg Meier on pole starting first anyway in the number 84 1959 Sadler mark for that was a home-built bill santur built that car was very very competitive and it's Rob Walton running second in car 166 that's a 1960 maserati tipo Birdcage X Jim Hall car then sold to Chuck Parsons here in Monterey follow behind him is Spencer trinary he's driving in 1961 Cooper Monaco mark three our CRO is in a 1958 Lister knobbly the Kelowna drives chronodyne started v that's a 58 Devin SS he's followed by Jeffrey O'Neill and car 8 another the birdcage is a 1960 Maserati tipo six Joey Bo gelada a 1960 Elva mark six is beside him John chip fudge in the 1961 Huffaker Genie starting night car five frank r 0 jr 58 Lotus 11s - that is Chris McCallister in car 23 a a 1955 Jaguar d-type and we've got Jonathan fiber is in the 1968 Maserati t61 and Arthur Connor in a 1959 Devon Porsche D Deba David's wig and a 1956 Maserati 300s that's car 66 mark sang in car 164 1956 Lotus 11 Michael Khalil in a 1962 Lola mark one beside him Brian macaque ran in a 1956 Lotus 11 Tazio autist drives car 2 D 1955 Ferrari 750 Mondial than Thor Johnson a car 99 59 Lotus 17 Tom Prabhu in a 1958 Porsche 550 a Bruce Miller as a 1958 Lotus 11 171 Stephen Lawrence 59 low 217 Michael 1:59 ferrari TR 250 Nick rule and a 1959 low 217 and then there's a lotus 11 another lotus 11 be driven by Stuart Smith about 1.5 Wesley Avenue off in the 55 Chevrolet Mistral and Stan and dairies in car 32:56 Lotus 11 a lot of cars still as you can see it's a huge field of cars that are out there won't get through the entire grid because we're just about ready to go racing but ton of Lotus 11s and most importantly that 1959 Sadler that is starting up and as you mentioned Bill Sadler was a Canadian who came up with a whole series of them starting with the mark 1 this one was the mark for building them really out of parts on his own and then ultimately taking him to Europe and do it fairly well with them and you've also got three maserati bird cages not too often you'll see three of them in one place at one time looking for the green flag as they came up come up the start/finish straight away it looks like it's Sadler that's gonna motor off into the distance in that 84 car Greg Meier in the Sadler marked for looks like Rob Walton in the 166 car tried to dive inside going down into the Andretti hairpin didn't work out too well as he dropped the spot and he's third as they come out of that turn and head into turn three yes Spencer trinary in that 1961 Cooper Monica was able to slot into the second spot I think Rob Walton is right behind but it's Meyer in the saddle of Mark four looks like he's firmly in control as they work their way to the infield although trinary closes up on him and he makes the pass on the entrance to turn five Trenor e in that number 6061 Cooper Monaco has taken the lead as they go up the hill and sag Meyer and The Saboteur pulls up alongside as he going to sixes good dive inside and retake it so you've got two lead changes so far and the Sadler goes around Trenor he goes over to the right and avoids him and it looks like Rob Walt was gonna try and dive on the inside though he can't make that sound did a complete 360 avoided contact and got passed by about five or six cars before he could get it back on course and pointed in the right direction attained the number nine car being driven by Nick Kelowna that 1958 Devon SS had to take evasive action now this is thus we're gonna see it again as they're going around [Music] Luke spins it around and I think the Rob Walton Spencer Turner we do a very good job of not colliding as they go through and as a result now we've got that number 60 car being driven by Spencer turning Trenor e a 1961 Cooper Monaco M which is now in the lead of the second race here at Laguna Seca as we watch that replay it looks like Maier did a 180 ended up in the middle of the course facing oncoming traffic Trenor he was able to brake he had room to go around him to the right and everybody did once traffic got by Mayer got over to the left and got the car turned around and rejoined and let's see where he's got a slot and he looks like he's in fifth spot so he lost four positions it's Trenor e in the cooper Monaco car 6-0 leading followed by well actually Rob Walton has now moved into second place Joey Bosa Ladin that Elva had had the second position going past the flag going into the first turn first turn Rob Walton in that Maserati tipo six was able to take the position away yeah that happened after I was looking at the monitor that but you are right it is welcome in the ex Jim Hall Chuck Parsons Maserati birdcage Maserati built those cars originally there were two litre cars and it was so successful then they stretched the engine got him up to almost three liters I think you're at 29 100 CC's and change very very effective cars who are very very competitive in their day won a lot of races and now Walton is stocking Trenor e as they go up the hill and earlier referred to that number 9 car as the car big group by Nicola the Devin that is actually the mr. Nam Li and it's actually number 9 a but where there you see Rob Walton trying to close in as they go down the corkscrew trying to get a little bit closer to Spencer trinary that Lister knobblies powered by a Jaguar engine and the not it was called the knob blue because they did an aerodynamic tests on the car body as Lister and they found it is that they put those little lumps and bumps on it it made the car more aerodynamically efficient but it looked like somebody beat it up and it was swollen in spots so it got the name the knobbly the Lister name hasn't gone away and in fact there has been talk of coming up with a new Lister anomaly pictures floated supposedly it's good this year but we have not actually seen one [Music] let's run down the top ten we've got Spencer Treasury in that Cooper Monaco em as they go under the bridge who's leading the way Greg Meier however has worked his way back up into second in that Sadler after the spin remember he's got the performance and he actually did a pretty impressive job of keeping it under control as they were going around Rob Walton in the 1960s Maserati is right behind him out RC arrow in the lister knobbly he's in fourth place right now and boil add in that number 70 a car is all over the back of our Sierra and the list really trying to move himself back up into fourth spot so it's Trenor II and the Cooper Meyer and the Sadler Walton in the birdcage RC arrow in the western' knobbly and then boil at in car 7 da that's the Elba six prototype running in fifth spot [Music] awful lot of Lotus cars out there in Lotus 11s we've seen a number of them in addition to low to seven teams once again these are all cars that were race between 1955 and 1961 as you mention awful lot of cars that were were while semaphore filled by Lotus and there were a number of there also some cars done reasonably well over the years yeah I saw the C type jag just go on by the one-off - catches everybody's attention though is Greg Myers Sadler mark for cryin over 84 as he tries to close in on Spencer trainer E in the number 60 61 Cooper Monaco that is leading this event at this point we'll look at the difference as they go through Trenor he's got about a 1.8 second lead a lot of passing going on up the hill and the fog has not lifted up there it's a little misty visibility not sketchy but not as sharp as it normally would be up there the leaders look like they're coming down through the corkscrew they're gonna be encountering traffic in another lap or two remember these are short sprint races only about 20 minutes in length now that number 259 is a peerless being driven by John Wilbur once again you know we have so many cars that that they didn't have a long run but they had a run and so and there's the 1959 Elva mark 4 right behind in the red car that red car the number 72 right behind the yellow car Elva of course car manufacturer in England who had built a number of race cars they built purpose-built race cars they also built the Elven courier and of course Alva the name was actually a play on a French word two words together le ll e and vah which means XI and go so when they put it together creating the word the name Alva the car was she goes [Music] there's David Brown at number 93 that's a 1955 Cooper bobtail break Meyer in that 1959 Sadler mark 4 still trying to chase down Spencer Trenor II who is in the lead in the Cooper Monaco Spencer Trenor II who was attacking Greg Meier in the very early going in that Sadler and then the Sadler spun and Spencer has been able to control ever since yeah Trenor ii very comfortable in that cooper he's got about a one and a half second lead now and it's another 2 seconds back or second and half back to Rob Walton the third place car that Maserati Birdcage car 166 and RC arrow and other three seconds back in the lister knobbly 409 a and oil add in cars 78 running fifth another five seconds back so the field is kind of spreading up no imminent challenges in the top five you can see Walton working the wheel in that Maserati birdcage he's got camera mounted on the roll bar over his head shooting the event so he can look at that later and see what he did right and what he didn't do right and there's always highs and lows to be able to watch her race back over again there's the Lister knobbly from 1958 quite a unique body style mister of course built a number of racing machines over the years and a quite a bit of success with them over time you look at the back of that blister knobbly and it's the back of the body very similar to the back of that maserati birdcage it's kind of kind of a bathtub looking if you want to call it that well that Cooper Monaco is venture Treasury he's got those two fins up and behind it at the top of the bodywork air-intake going into the Trenor II going by one of the Lotus 11s number 18 as he comes out of the corkscrew yeah that's the car being ripped by Timothy scopes that Louis 1957 you know it's really spectacular to think about you know with the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca originally opening back in 1957 these are the cars that would have been there for the first few years now once again the 1961 car would have been racing here just four years after the track was open that 1959 Sadler could have been here two years after the track opened it's incredible to see these cars back here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as you say they were here sixty years ago and there and today there's the battle for 13th a number 34 car that's a 1958 Porsche 550 a being driven by Tom from you David swig and then number 66 car that's a 1956 Maserati 300s while shredder is stretching out his lead over Meyer in the Sadler he's got over two seconds in hand and they are both leaving Rob Walton back in the birdcage who is comfortably in third and RC arrow may try and make a bid because he's a little over a second behind wall key as the clock ticks down on this which is past the midpoint looks like we've got about ten and a half minutes in to a 20 minute race and while aggressive driving is discouraged the goal is not to have wheel to wheel contact body to body contact there's no doubt all these guys out there in this series in this particular race and in all the race were to see this weekend well they are out there for honor and pride they don't want to be passed unless they absolutely have to be keep you out of that 126 Michael Khalil he's moving up through the field to it at 1962 lola mark one worked himself into the top ten a lot of traffic out there as we mentioned fifty cars have entered this event but looks like it's getting a little thicker up the top of the hill Rick yeah we know it's gonna burn off eventually but this morning I know those when I was driving through the track about a moisture on the windshield which can also affect the track as well you've got a moist track we've got to be very cautious and remember you know these cars driving around on tires from the style of the late 50s they don't have an awful lot of tread on the track that footprint he's not that big gotta be careful if the track gets a little bit slippery as they go through number 23 car that you see right there that is a 1960s or Alarcon the red white and blue car as the cars got newer the tires got larger and wider in the old days the joke used to be the tires of thin and the drivers are fat the other amazing thing when you look at these cars is realizing there were no wind tunnels back then for the most part everything that these were that was being put together whether it's that number 18 the Lotus 11 or some of the other cars these were all simply eyeballed drivers were human engineers designers would sit down and think what the would be an aerodynamic shape we had those pre-war cards earlier very upright with those big radiator standing up front and then over time by the time the 1950s came around they realized we want to make up a lot sleeker we need to make a more aerodynamic we need a little bit closer to the teardrop fit I'm looking at a scoring modern and all of a sudden looks like Meyer has gathered it up in the Sadler he's just a bit more than a half a second behind treachery so you've got a battle for the lead shaping up on we've still got about seven minutes to go before the checkered flag waves on this second race of the day we got a good race with that's for 11th and 10th the car in the back is that number 52 Arthur Connor a 1959 Devon Porsche they're moving along quite well trying to work their way into the top ten there goes treachery on our screen you can see them and there's sad lured they're both on the same picture Sadler closing in on him there's another car that they're both trying to pass that's two five nine as they go through the end ready hairpin John will burn in that 59 peerless Ambro yeah the difficulty here for Greg Mayer is to work his way through traffic trying to line up for a pass we can catch up without getting tangled up at some of the back markers so it's very complicated to work your way through the field worry about all those back Parker's at the same time still trying to catch up to spent your Trenor up front what mire working his way through traffic real well staying right in the wheel tracks of Spencer Treasury into Cooper so that battle is really shaped up like I said it not it's less than a second separating those two cars these are the cars battling for the overall lead Spencer Treasury in sixty the Cooper and Greg Meyer in car 84 the Sadler mark 4 and right now they're passing the car that's a 25th position on the track that's the number 20 being driven by Albert hot in the 1959 Porsche dural ID so the first two cars at this point have passed more than half of the cars that are in this field as they work the way now up to pass 4:32 car they dripped by Stan and Daris a 1956 Lotus 11 and and Aries unintentionally I'm sure holds up great Meyer this is allowed now he pulls over way wide as they exit turn 10 to allow Meyer to come through but this has helped Renner a bit as he's used traffic to his advantage and open up that gap it was less than a second the last time they cross the start/finish line they're coming up that front straight now we'll see what it is when the monitor updates I'm sure it's about a second second at one point six so that worked but now as is always the case there's more traffic ahead and this is going to slow Trent Lee down and allow Meyer to close that gap again he's going to try and stick cluttery behind the slower car and use it as a pick to get around and if he can't so it's gonna be interesting all the way through recapping its Trinity leading followed by Meyer in 84 Rob Walton still third in the birdcage 166 followed by RC arrow in the lister knobbly 9a and boil add in car 78 the elbe mark six prototype is running fifth and a reminder these are timed races each one of these races is 20 minutes long or about 16 minutes into this one so they're likely only going to get another lap or two before the day comes to an end for the very first race 55 through 1961 sports racecars once again they're both over and under 2,000 CCS out of the track that's the carbon drink by Frank Garcia jr. in 1958 Lotus 11s - where's Colin Chapman and the Lotus is one of the great names in auto racing history and of course the old joke with Colin Chapman was he'd build a car take everything off it as he possibly could to make it looked up to the point where would practically implode on itself and then he'd put a couple pieces back on to make it as light or he's built it to last until the last lap then the car would collapse after the checkered flag wave brilliant engineer folks of very fine automobiles keep that number dying car coming down next Nick Colonna in car number seven that's a 1958 Devon SS again similar bodywork to the list of novelty in the rear also similar to the Maserati Birdcage Myers close it back up to a little bit more than half a second but time is running out we're little over 17 minutes into a 20 minute race so they just could be starting their last lap or they could get one more go-around when they come by this is gonna be good because in that shot I was able to see the starters and they were not indicating to the drivers that there was one more lap to go but probably going to be this one plus one more Walton continued Walton in a bird cage in third continues to slip back he's about 20 seconds behind Meyer now and are see arrows backed off a little bit in his whisker knobbly he's still running fourth but he's comfortable there he's about three seconds behind Ruffin and that's another 10 seconds back to the fifth place car of oil a second race of the day here at the that the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion some of the greatest race cars in the history are out here this weekend and then you can see this they work their way trying to fight their way in free that's John Hill who's way back in the back of trying to just squeeze his way back up and there is the number 60 car that is being driven by special trinary the Cooper Monaco spencer Trenor and his dad have a shop over in Emeryville California called fantasy junction with quite a collection of cars that they've got for sale there I love the Batmobile style for these fins on the ferry now they're waving one lap to go so we are in our final lap here of this second race of the day then the question is does Greg Mayer in that blue and white Sadler the Sadler mark for does he have anything to be able to catch up to that lead car of the Cooper Monaco being driven by Spencer Trenor II don't think it's going to happen because the gap was now widened to 1.7 seconds as a result of the traffic and the further you get into this race the more traffic they're going to encounter but doesn't mean Myers givin up he's still charging hard trying to catch treachery in that Cooper Meier in that Sadler mark for very quick cars he's working his way around traffic he seems to have a little bit more horsepower more grunt that's a Chevy power and he's closing again he's got treachery in his sights as they head up the hill there's no traffic between them and it's going to be the fight from the corkscrew down to the start/finish line up to the top of the hill now up the REA Hall Street remember in that very first lap Meyer would fortunately spun the car but it did a great job of keeping it in a straight line spun was able to get back out into traffic without too much trouble but having gone through the course proof seemed unless he can pull some off of a very special memories race at that 1961 Cooper Monaco Meyer has really closed the gap and if they down to the start/finish line without encountering any more traffic that's not going to happen is the Lotus 11 in the way as they go down and turn 11 Trenor e is going to take him on the inside going into the corner has to back out of it and here comes Meier it's going to be a drag race up the start/finish straight away and it's going to go to Spencer treachery in the Cooper Monaco oh and the Sadler tries to pull alongside just misses the margin of victory point zero six minute according to timing and scoring they're showing Greg Meier in that 1959 Sadler was able to squeeze ahead at the last possible moment by six one hundredths of a second going up the hill to take the victory in the second race of the day just taking it away from Spencer trinary I had the margin victory right ahead the car wrong I was looking at it on the video didn't look at the timing and scoring feed and for my look like Trenor 'i have been able to hold him off but as I mentioned that Sadler has got a lot of grunt with that big Chevy v8 in it what a great finish and a great comeback by Greg Meyer in The Saboteur spun while battling for the lead which read earlier early on in the race dropped back to fifth spot and worked his way through traffic and around the leader at the start/finish line and I think the key and all that was going into the very last turn as you mentioned there was a Lotus 11 a silver Lotus love and you see it right there that just held up the leaders bench a turnery by just a little bit and that was just enough once again for Greg Meier to go through that turn a little quicker more importantly do the drag race up to the green flag to be able to come away with victory in the second race of the day here at Laguna Seca what a great finish [Music] it's gonna get loud in just a few moments as these Trans Am cars work their way out of the pre green area out of the track for their pace lap looks like we're gonna have about 37 cars for this one and you've got some of the famous cars that were so competitive in any day of the TransAm X Donohue Camaros Donohue Penske javelins the but more Mustangs and of course the Sam Posey Dodge Challenger that sublime number 77 big fan favorite always the Trans Am cars they are loud so stand by for a real treat yeah when we think about the Trans Am the name the racing series this is really the era that comes tomorrow the Mustang the Camaros the challengers the Cougars everything being the javelin that were out there of course this was the heyday of the factory Chevrolet Pinsky [Music] Gorge balls are going for championships these were pretty spectacular the TransAm continues today and of course has great racing today but once again when we think about the trans in this is the error that comes to mind looks like it's Jim Haig is gonna be leading the field after at a 70 Ford Mustang Boss 302 16 a bill Ocalan the 1971 American Motors javelin cars 6a followed by Ken xmin also in the 71 javelin quarter virtue of Bruce 1970 javelin part 6 XO 3 javelins in the top two rows but it's followed by in 1964 aunty AK tempest a lot of people forget that the tempest will be riveted the TransAm in the early days that would be Jan rainylin a 1969 Camaro can add up to the 1969 Ford Mustang Arthur Miller in a 1967 Camaro Richard Goldsmith in that number 77 1970 Dodge Challenger that was a factory car campaigned by Sam Posey Steve Lincoln 72 at 69 Chevrolet Camaro at Jeffrey O'Neill car 50 59 for boss Mustang at another 70 forward Mustang bus Charles Chris Leben burg in 70 Camaro nick de vidas in a 1968 Ford Mustang William Connor also in a 1970 Ford Mustang Chad parish in car 2x a Ford Mustang 69 model 69 Ford Mustang given by Don D a matryona sin car to a John chip fudge and 71 a Camaro z28 and a Shelby group 2 most active by Carrie Underwood in the car at 33 funny Mustangs out there Jake Biddle isn't one of them also true Alcazar to 1969 Mustang boss Daniel goldsmith in a Camaro Ross Myers in 1969 Mustang my joy might remember him from boys NASCAR on Fox 1966 Ford Mustang Rick Jeffery in a 1967 Shelby working the way around the track once again it's just a touch a great opportunity to see these cars that originally raced here back in the original Trans Am series going around and it is such an extreme collection I mean there is everything from a 1964 Ford Falcon to chrysler entered the Dodge Challenger with Sam Posey driving but also entered a pair of Plymouth Guerra barracudas that Dan Gurney's All American racers put together he drove one and Swede Savage drove the other technically the Challenger wasn't a classic pony car in the sense that it was slightly larger than the CUDA however they wanted that impression with the younger generation and as a result they had the Trans Am car that was put together not quite as successful as they wanted it to be but still it was out there have the name into this day of such an iconic look in that sub line well what a great roster of drivers they had in there too with Parnelli Jones Greg in a at George foamer mark Donahue just list the manufacturers didn't spare the dollars they wanted to showcase their cars and sell them on mud be in the showroom that's exactly what they were doing once again we got the fog here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca there's a little bit foggy on the way in and then it seems have got a little bit foggier this morning as we're going through and we should point out that also means a little bit of moisture on the track as well I don't think it's enough to make a difference for these cars that we were to see more cars sliding off into your earlier races but this will be the true test cuz you've got a lot more horsepower from these cars with the bigger tires and if anyone's going to get sideways it's going to be this group that was interesting Penske dominated with that Chevrolet Camaro and Donahue and then he jumped the fence and went to AMC and built the car from the ground up to compete in the Trans Am and he was successful winning with the javelins just to show you how far Penske would go in unfair advantage he actually used a Porsche 917 brake part on the javelin and had American Motors listed with a parts number in their catalog to make it legal yeah the the running joke was always about the unfair advantage to be honestly I always thought the unfair advantage for Roger Penske was Mark Donohue a brown graduate and actual engineer he understood both how to turn the wheel as well as all right historic trades in cars coming up under the bridge getting the green flag and we are racing again here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca the javelin on the outside the Mustang on the inside is they jockey for position going into the first turn looks like it's gonna be Jim Hague leading the field down into the Andretti hairpin in that number 16 Mustang school bus yellow was the factory color on those cars said he leads bill Ocalan in that American Motors javelin looking now for the third place car as they come through I believe that's Bruce kennefa and the number six X camera boy Auckland rather Hank little sideways got a wheel off so maybe this slippery out there Rick it looked a little squirrely as he went through but he managed to save it keep it pointed the right direction top three cars almost to tail a Mustang and a pair of javelins Tommy Atkins fourth I was gonna say followed by the Pontiac Tempest we don't have a Camaro in the top four the interesting thing about that the two cars at second and third place now we're seeing what looks like a pass that may be in the works as Canepa tries to come up on the inside there you see the Pontiac the interesting thing about those two javelins is that they are the 1971 version and the 1970 version so they are slightly different it looks as you see them going around once again bill hey in that number 16 Mustang in the lead and it's the 1971 American Motors javelin being driven by Phil Ocalan followed by the 1970 version the 1971 version a little more distinctive because of the fender flares that go up over the lip of the front wheel making it slightly different the very first javelin that you see behind it the styling continued for the very beginning of the car and he's looking to try to line up a pass as they go down into that last turn before the front straightaway and that's exactly what Bruce Canepa does in that 1970 javelin believe me those gentlemen did not come off a factory production line they were built at Penske shop in Pennsylvania that Pontiac Tempest I think herb Adams one of the Pontiac engineers put that car together but it is Haig leading in the Mustang car 16 a canopy as you say with the past going into eternal evidence moved his javelin 6x up into second spot followed by Bill Ocalan in the 6a javelin Hildebrandt and the number 49 Pontiac Tempest is in fourth spot and we've got a pass for the lead going on in the track now Bruce kanafeh and Mark Donohue dole javelin coming through you can see him sliding as he works his way around the Mustang that was driven by Jim Hagen he now has the lead in this historic Trans Am race hope you've got a chance to see this on the video you can really see kennefa sawing on that wheel back and forth as he got around Jim Hague now leading them up the hill so javelin Mustang javelin Pontiac and Chad Randall and the number 64 Chevrolet Camaro that's your top 5 most areas they go off into that fog work their way on that back side then start their way down the corkscrew make not happy about being past closes right up on the rear bumper of kanafeh as they come out of the corkscrew backs off a little bit as they come out of a day down there and heading down into turn 10 that Bank right hander that takes a bit of the final corner of the track this is where Greg Myers car made up all the time on that last race when the leader got held up a little bit going into that final corner gave him the chance to come out and steal the way not gonna happen with these guys no Jim Hague was trying to hang it out trying to get a little bit of an advantage once again if you get a little bit closer coming out of that last turn you can set yourself up for a long drag race up into the very first turn but once again Jim Hague not quite able to pull that off so as a result he said they're looking at the bumper Bruce kanafeh I don't think he's happy about that at all today not at all he's hanging right there he's not going anywhere and Canepa knows it but calf has got clear racetrack ahead of him so he's got nothing to hold him up he just needs to put the car in the right spot at the right time and not a whole heck they hate can do about it unless they run into traffic or kennefa makes a mistake and I don't think that's going to happen the gap between the first and second place cars the javelin 6x and the Mustang 16:8 a half a second when they cross the start/finish line they're on their way up the hill now up in the 66 eight and then we've got a pass on the inside that is the car being the number 49 car John Hildebrand that just got passed by the Mustang being driven by Ken Adams and I think it looked like that hillbrand actually gave a little wave to the inside I think he realized he didn't have anything more and said go ahead and go on by so Ken Adams and that 1969 Mustang moves into four went back a little further now chat Randall in that Chevrolet kamala car 64 has dropped to six richard goldsmith in the sublime green 70 Dodge Challenger running seventh in car 77 followed by Arthur Miller car 30 the Chevrolet Camaro Steve Lincoln 72 of Camaro and Nick Tobias in car 28 completes the top 10 in his Ford Mustang leaders up the front straightaway coming around that final turn hanging on as much as they can remember you know while these were race cars a lot of performance there's still an awful lot of weight attached to these cars going around that last turn trying to do it as much as possible using up every inch of the racetrack as they drag race up underneath the bridge going into the first turn the 19 the number 77 car that we see that's the Dodge Challenger drift richard goldsmith coming up into the first turn being hounded by a 1969 Chevy Camaro driven by Steve link you'll see those drivers use all the pavement down in turn 11 as they go around that left hander they go way out to the right kitu a fast lap here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is a good exit speed out of 11 because that takes you on to the longest straightaway here at the track and then good passing zone of course is going down into turn one you'll also see a lot of passing going into turn five that left-hander that starts the ascent up the hill and just boils down to how much torque how much grunt do you have in that engine when you're accelerating up the way because that is what is the key up there because if you can get enough of the horsepower to get yourself up there get yourself into position I think that's exactly what we've got happening right there with the Challenger as well as with the Camaro as the Camaro boosts at the inside of the Challenger and I think that Camaro is going to have the advantage they work their way up through the courts move meanwhile back up front it is still two javelins javelins that have now worked their way into the lead which means that Jim Haig has now worked his way back to third yeah Ocalan has gotten around him and moved himself up into the second spot actually Ocalan is now in the lead and it's Chris kanafeh so we've got Auckland in the lead Bruce Canepa and Jim Haig in the Mustang is now third with Ken Adams and another Mustang and fourth didn't get a chance to see the pass for the lead where Ocalan was able to pull it off and once again that you see as they go around that that Andretti complex just getting a little squirrely as they're working really hard and I think the guys working hardest right now as Ken Adams because he sees that he's got Jim Hague in his sights and obviously Jim hey he's already been chewed up by the tooth part of the head of him I think Adams thinks he may be able to get that third spot by the podium here in the very very first Trans Am race of the day he takes a look to the inside and indeed he is going to pull it off that's that pass going into turn five as I told you about good place to make a move Adams now up into fourth spot in the 45 Mustang everyone going around a Camaro that is being lapped as they go up into the hill the huge appleman's already made there here comes out of here comes Hague they put a lap on that car as well as they kind of disappear and a little hazy view from us in that fog in their light mist as they get up near the top of the hill other good battles throughout the pack we can keep our eye on those as well a lot of traffic a lot of passing taking place but it is Auckland the leader these cars all most of which are running the original numbers that they had when they were active competitors in the Trans Am in that era from 67 to 1972 that's why you see all the duplicate numbers and you'll see 6a 6x kind of hard to differentiate between the two javelins because they're both of the same paid scheme that red white and blue graphic together with the same number of the six that marked on you throw during the original Trans Am series the six that was originally on the Camaro and then got transferred over to the borshu South Park down you drive that number 6 car in so many IndyCar Series that's not the number 89 car that's the one being driven by Mike joy one of my co-workers of the barrett-jackson broadcast he's also the voice of NASCAR on Fox and he's a hardcore racer that we saw Falcon and then we got a Mustang right behind it it's interesting you know the Falcon story is that some of those Falcons were being driven competitively there's Mike joy in the 1966 Mustang the Falcons were being written pretty competitively and some of the team guys we're putting parts into that car Carroll Shelby said look we're not here to sell Falcons we're here to sell Mustangs stop it Mike joy if you don't know by chance is a great car guy great car collector loves being on the track and a particularly love the trans and era and Joey's got a windshield wiper working it's only one wife or the one in front of the driver on that car and he is utilizing it to get the mist off the front of that windshield kennefa back out in front looks like the 6x javelin but it's Ken Adams now in that Mustang who managed to take second spot looked at the inside going into the last turn not able to pull it off but he is lining up Bruce Canepa trying to see if he can't pull us off remember Bruce that that kid Adams was back a little further has been slowly but surely working his way through the field and now he's got Bruce can up in his sights already looking to the inside as they go into the very first turn and he's gonna pull it off and if we got a Mustang also being driven by Jim Hague who also wants to get his position back so let's see if the two Mustangs that's right now it's a Mustang javelin battle on the track you know looking at this there is one no-show and that was the javelin of Ken Epps man who's usually in the thick of this battle at the front evidently some sort of problem his his car did not come out for this event hopefully we'll see him this afternoon but Adams in the Mustang out front here comes hanging around Canepa moves himself into second place so it's Mustangs 1 & 2 the inside of turn 5 is a favorite passing spot as they come out of the infield area just before they start their climb up the hill to the corkscrew earlier in the race it was the that were running the show one and two and now it's Mustangs and it looks like we've got Jim Haig trying to make a move on Ken Adams trying to set him up through the court crew takes the inside and he's going to have the position going down the hill loses it but he manages to get by Ken Adams and now they are drag racing down there that was the Alex Zanardi line going up in event corner diving down on the inside carrying a little too much speed to get through there got a little bit sideways but was able to keep it pointed in the right direction and took the lead Adams wave Canepa by for some reason he waved and by on the entrance to turn 11 and a javelin now in second place in pursuit of Jim hey and it looks like another Jam one that other javelin being driven [Music] the second javelin is going to go into the second or third place as well so I can only assume that Ken Adams in that Mustang having a little bit of a problem but now the battle is on for the lead Bruce Canepa and Jim hey going at and Bruce Canepa moving to the inside and he takes the lead here at Laguna Seca that systems are going through turn three now under the michelin bridge heading into turn four look at a Jim Hayes car it is very squirrely he's sliding that thing back and forth all over the place having a hard time keeping it pointed in the right direction but it's kennefa out front followed by hague followed by öcalan in the sixth a javelin you go to turn five to head up the hill there got to run into a bunch of traffic by the time they get up to the top to begin their descent through the corkscrew meanwhile playing is John Hildebrand when that silver 1964 Pontiac Tempest he's managed to hold close to that front pack he's just hoping that maybe they get a little squirrelly in dicey with each other and he can squeeze in and take himself a podium spot but as you said they're coming up on some of the back markers and that could play into who the eventual winner of this very first historic trains and worries of the day at Laguna Seca traffic many times because the Joker in the deck it could hurt you or help you sometimes you can use it to your advantage see somewhat is starting to move well out of the way to let these leaders come through these drivers that are being lapped are using their mirrors and making room there's one of the Falcons you talked about just getting eaten up by Bruce kennefa here comes Hague by and - as they go up the start/finish straight away passing flag being displayed by the starter that's a blue flag with the vertical yellow stripe indicating to drivers that give way you've got a faster car coming up behind you you know sometimes it's a question in historic racing are they really racing are they actually going that hard wheel-to-wheel or is it just a show I can guarantee you these guys in this race today are going all-out just look at the way Jim Hague just fishtail through that last turn trying to catch up with Bruce Canada these Trans Am cars always put on a great show and my bet is that they're going to get the one lap sign the next time they cross the start/finish line but it's kennefa with about 3/4 of a second over Jim Hague and Auckland in the next javelin about a section of the halfback then Adams in the 45 Mustang money for it Hildebrandt and the tempest has hung into the top five from the time the green flag waved that 49 silver Pontiac Tempest so Jim hey going through that last turn got a little out of sorts and into a result that has allowed Bill Ocalan in that 1971 she javelin to catch up just a little bit the question is is he going to be able to hold on to that as they go through the course groom to go down the hill to lead on to that front straightaway Wow look like Auckland was starting to close in but now it looks like the gap is going back out meanwhile you've got Jim Hague look into the inside and taking the lead away from Bruce Canepa a little sideways coming out of 11 we'll look at the start of we can get it into shot and see if they get the one lap sign yes one lap this is the final lap hang and Canopus side-by-side going into the Andretti hairpin with Ocalan right behind everybody looking for a way back and then it's Ken Adams and the 45 Mustang trying to mix it up as well great battle through the infield area Canepa grant they're both pointer on a canopy and back early gonna try and do it as they come out of turn three Jim hang look once again a little squirrely coming out of that turn as a result Bruce canif is able to hang on and Bill Walker land has taken one second place the question is where does he do it how does he do it if he can just keep himself in line and he's moved to the inside and it looks like right now Jim Hague has the line but no it's going to be bill Okerlund moving into second place we got chaplains now 1 & 2 Mustangs third and fourth Ken Adams coming back tri he's also trying to tame make a move on may have used up his tires as he's getting squirrely ER and squirrely er as this race progresses but right now it's a battle of the javelins at the head of the pack 6x and 6a kanafeh and Ocalan as they start down the corkscrew for the final time at speed this morning the 1970 javelin that's the one even believe in being driven by Canepa the 1971 javelin drift by Bill Ocalan is the one behind for a moment at the top of the corkscrew it looked like Ocalan might be trying to line himself up but just didn't have enough going through as a result it looks like Canepa unless Aukerman can pull something off coming into this last Friday doing the drag race up to the checkered flag and it's gonna be Bruce kanafeh taking the victory here in this historic Trans Am race and it's öcalan finishing second in the 6a javelin followed by Jim Haig in the 16 a Mustang he was able to hold off Ken Adams and his Mustang number 44 and Hillebrand brings the pontiac tempest gto proud of a 49 home in fifth place 1969 Camaro the Camaros not able to crack into the top ten but they did fit his sixth seventh and eighth the Arthur Miller Camaro is 67 and 7th Steve link had a Camaro from 1969 he finished in eighth a 1968 Mustang being driven by a nick de vidas from who was able to finish eighth and Richard Boltzmann that 1970 Dodge Challenger now it turns out Arthur Miller in that Camaro at the very at the flag got moved back just a little bit and so he's now officially in 10th place well it's the javelins that dominated or you could say it's the Penske is accommodated the name names are interchangeable well there were different parts in the race at one point the javelins had controlled the Mustangs could took control but ultimately Roger Penske machines the old macdonna race cars came oil with the wind here at Laguna Seca there's a great show and looking forward to seeing these guys run again this afternoon that will be a rematch when they do cars coming out on track now this will be a 40 minute race this one double the usual time this 1983 to 2016 masters endurance legends cars some spectacular machinery and this one really some of the later model cars too we've got cars as late as a 2012 Lola B 12 2011 cars and some more modern cars probably the newest cars you're gonna see out here this weekend yeah the the range for these cars goes from 1983 to 2016 for the class the Masters endurance legend series is a series of races around the country this weekend here at Monterey happens to be one of the events that is a part of that series around the country looks like we've got 26 cars scheduled to come out for this event and they are coming out of the pre grid area now in forming up on the start/finish straight away in the racing pit lane they'll be released from there to go out on track to begin a pace lot and then begin their 40-minute race and let's run through the field because the very first car is a 1999 BMW it's a v12 LMR but it's the name that's attached to it which is really significant bill Oberlin who is mr. BMW been driving BMWs for so long with so much success he is going to be racing in this race today at the very front of the field of the very first car Craig Bennett in a 2012 lova be 1280 right beside him in that second row a familiar name Spencer Trenor II who almost won the first race today the secretary is actually no it was the first reason because we had the Trans Am cars next number 15 Spencer Trenor II in a 2006 Reilly 11 Daytona Travis engine in that all-conquering 2005 out of the RAL MP part number 2 is next mark Brandon in the 2001 driving Scott moolam crass in car 1 1 2 that's on the npt lady and the field is rounded out by joining her and long in a 2000 lola b2k 10 and george crass in a 2003 chevrolet corvette and once again this class is the 1983 to 2016 masters endurance legends and it's such a great opportunity to some of the greatest cars that we've seen over the last 30 years back out on the track what's in those latest cars going all the way of eligible eligibility through 2016 patek they're getting a second pace lap double standing yellow being displayed that start/finish lots of tires scrubbing going on as these drivers are trying to get heat into those tires at number 27 the blue car that's the Mirage going around I was actually that was that was when I channel me by the name of Harley clucksten owns a company called Grand Touring cars owned the Mirage name and was putting that car together together with a guy named John Horseman John Horseman used to work with John Wyer so John Wyer was a part of the project horsemen was a part of the project and that particular car was designed to race at LaVon and well we've got to spin the number 93 car that's Christopher Frank end of 2000 a Porsche gt3 are warming up the tires swing inside the side is the little should have it as a result spins it sideways fortunately no harm no foul and no one got into him so that's a great thing they were going slow enough that it wasn't a big issue and everybody else could get out of the way if it except the story about that Mirage Michael and Mario Andretti were to be driving that car together at Lamaze would be the father-son pairing for the first time that number 27 bar I've seen right there when they got there everything was ready that qualified well they're on the grid getting ready to start the race and the FIA officials came up and said your oil cooler is two inches too far to the side and they disqualified the car Mario Andretti Michael Andretti scheduled to run together and the car was disqualified that's incredible did they ever pair up in a car I know they want to do for a long time I don't think they ever did I'm not that I'm aware of I don't know that they've ever done an endurance race together they both had amazing careers obviously Mario Andretti the legend Michael Andretti now people always point out will he never won any 500 but he won just about everything else he didn't have a great for a in the Formula one when he was sent his teammate but having said that he had a truly incredible career as a racecar driver and more importantly has had an amazing career as a team owner in the IndyCar Series those Indy 500 victories he couldn't get as a driver well he got them as a team owner face lights bass car lights are out means we should be going green look for the pace car to exit as they before they get down into turn 11 what a front row are Berlin and that BMW v12 and Bennett in the Lola b12 great pair of cars are coming in on up pace car is off we're looking for a green flag the true racer took the line he easily moved up the hill and had the position and now it looks like Spencer trying to remain me moving into the second place for a moment it looked like he was going to get the inside of Craig Bennet but Bennet and a little more horsepower going up the hill and as a result he was able to hold on and at number 30 2012 look I love the graphics on that Lola block with a green trim on the edges of it just as spectacular and very quick as well Trenor he tucks in behind and we've got a spin with Craig Brenton Craig Bennett and at 2012 Lola be 1280 as he was trying to come out of that Andretti complex spun it ride around the dirt and he is dead in the water right now that's the same place that Porsche RSR spun on the warm-up lap the exit of three so that's going to change the complexion dramatically for this event as Spencer treachery in that SunTrust Riley 11 Daytona here's a replay he comes around and he just can't quite hook up spins it very simply and I once again it looks like he just stalled it and that's the problem so they've got to get back out and the question is they're still under green Craig Bennett in 2006 Riley is in second place behind Billa Billa Billa Berlin has essentially checked out that we see that on the track and pictures we've got we can see Bennet we can see Spencer Trenor II behind it but what we can't see is the leader of the race bill opera Lane he is way up there bill our Merlin checked out before the green flag wave he got a great jump on the start coming out of turn 11 for some reason the Lola just kind of held back a little bit and our Berlin was gone so at the end of the first lap bill Avila then at 1999 BMW is checked out Spencer trinary in the Riley Daytona Prototype that from 2006 he is in second place as a result of the spin Travis angin in a 2005 Rd out er8 LMP has moved up into third and Mark Brennan in a 2001 Riley Scot mark 3 is it for Stephen Zakia rounds out the top five in Conor of 86 that's a 2002 Ferrari 550 GT one then it's the fort and white March car 88 John Edwards in car six a bmw m3 GTR and a good battle on the track right now between the cars we were just talking about that's the number 77 car being driven by Marc planning and 486 the 2000 that is being proved by Stephen Zaki as they go up the hill and it looks like the Ferrari may get the better of that prototype well watch for that as they go through and I think he has made the fast as they start to come down through the corkscrew so 77 car drums one more spot and Zakia moves into fourth then at number 86 Ferrari let's keep our eye on Travis and get two in that number 2 2005 out er8 LMP that is a very fast automobile and interestingly enough the car that is at six you see it right there that's the sort of the red white and blue car that's a 1983 March 83 G we just see it coming up the number 88 car that is probably one of the oldest cars and not dead I guess the Mirage the 82 Mirage would be the oldest but it's interesting looking at the styling and aerodynamic changes from 1983 in that number 88 car the white and blue with the red patches on the side and he is being hounded right now mm a 2k 10 that's a great battle for six to about ninth between fort and white and that 88 March you were talking about then the joiner long Lola car 18 John Edward six the bmw m3 into Philippi in the 56 BMW entry they are all running very close together and side by side jockeying for position as they head up the hill and Thornton in that car the the number 88 is moved bound while Joyner in the number 18 the Lola seems to be on the March in fact he's already gotten by the number 77 car a mark Brannon that Reilly in Scott mark 3 so the number 18 car that Lola b2k 10 is on the move well Craig Bennett is also on the move as he has got that car restarted and he is back on track he is completed three laps while you leader Bill Allen has completed four and Bennett right now is in the last spot of the cars that are running he's running 21st 21 cars are running so let's see if Bennett can start to work his way through that pack and get a little closer to the front where he started bill offer Lin as they came onto the bridge and started this lap had an 18 second lead over Spencer trinary remember that's a 1999 BMW that is solidly leading a 2006 car and there we see the number 21 car really having a great battle s John Cavanaugh as he tries to go into the very last turn and there were finally getting a look at that the car that that that spun Bennett that was being driven by Bennett it's back on track mentioned were able to get him we fired and he's back out around this truck beautiful car the black with the the green accents all over it Craig Bennett and he comes out of turn 11 now and up the start/finish straight away we'll see if he's managed to get by anybody he was shown yet he's picked up a couple of spots he's moved from 21st to 19th so he is definitely working his way back up but he has a long way to go and even though it is a 40-minute race not sure if you'd be able to get to that lead back now that Audi is coming under attack by the Ferrari Travis engine in the number 2 Audi r8 LMP Stevens a Kia in that 2002 Ferrari 550 GT 186 all over the Audi as they go down into turn 11 and come up the start/finish straight away yeah Zacky has done a good job starting in 6 working his way up just a few spots here and there but he's now up in fifth spot Travis engine in the number 2 car that 2005 ow d r8 remember how he really just took over endurance racing during this era with just a string of spectacular racing cars that just dominated all of the endurance events yeah they were dominant and if I remember right this this Audi of it to enget is driving is I think it's a 2 of your car it doesn't have that big a boat it's obviously turbocharged yeah the Audi that's out there right now is actually 3600 so it is not not a small engine with the turbocharger but it's amazing when you were looking at what out he was able to do during that era up there right now a 19 we've got a Porsche still behind that number 88 car that March 83 G that that BMW that is right behind it is a bmw m3 GTR followed by a Porsche 996 RSR and then we've got a Corvette at the tail end of that four car path yeah bear corvettes garmi in the number 53 car 11th and Rob Morgan in 64 of 2000 chevrolet corvette running in the top spot and they were gonna pass at BMW m3 taking on mark Brannon right there the number 88 car should say a Thornton and it's the John Edwards BMW m3 that has taken that position away moved up to 8th spot overall interesting they're showing the passing flag for these guys going through it's like I don't think anybody's ready to give up any positions at this moment in time that's one flag you don't want to see oh we've got some smoke coming out of the back of that number 88 car that's the car being ripped by throwing that 1983 barge at 83 the DNR 6e if he's got a problem or just burned a little oil as you had mentioned over there that's the second oldest car out there there's 182 model car but that 83 is second oldest still doing a very great job running looked like 9th overall well last time we looked that's a 1983 March a degree G quite a v8 maybe shot at a car now looks clean now say of that Carter looking at the back of the number 88 car and was soon in just a roof down she smoke coming out the back but right now he looks me clean and that's really what matters meanwhile bill Oberlin has pretty much completely checked out at this point the last lap he had a 23 second lead which it slowly the truly built up the back of previous lap have been at 18 secondly now is it a situation where he's probably looking at closer to probably right back it's a 24 second lead and Craig Bennett continues to work his way up through the field now in 16th spot in that number 30 2012 roll of b12 made working his way up a couple more laps he'll probably be in the top ten but the further up you get the harder it is to pass because those cars obvious obviously are quicker Lauren bags is in a 2004 Porsche 996 RSR and he is working hard to catch up to that number 88 car the 1983 March 83 G and that's what's so great about these these races is to kind of imagine which car could do better at which point in time and we've got the actual ability now to see how cars from different Erick's can different eras can compete against one another meanwhile Craig Bennett is already up to 16th and he's trying to work his way up even higher he's got another car ahead of him that number 38 car that his he's back and Frank Bennett has now worked his way up into 15 they picked off one more car I think he got the X Momo Porsche as he went through there it was unfortunate not only did he spin but it looked like he wasn't able to get a refire right away on that very first lap so Craig Bennett unfortunately not able to run up front where he probably deserves but he's working really hard to try to get back up there as soon as he possibly can and Zakia in that Ferrari car number 86 still trying to work his way around engine in the number two Audi there in force ba throws in less than a second separating those two will look at him as they come up to start/finish straight away right now in the picture we've got angered in the Audi and Zakia in the Ferrari looking at the gap between and it's about less than a second as they go through start/finish always good classic bottle battles between the prototypes and the GT cars the prototypes of course always supposed to be the faster car but there have been years when some of those GTS could just eat up the prototype so it just depended upon what was going on in a particular year so it's great to see that 550 floor Zakia trying to hound that 2005 out er8 a nangan pretty solidly enforced spot he's a long ways back from the third place car a long car number 18 problem with a very comfortable day the last time we check in at number 42 1999 BMW v12 LMR Trenor II solidly in second spot he's not being challenged in that number 15 SunTrust Daytona Prototype he's a long ways behind arborlon doesn't close the threat to him at the moment booth he's not being pressured by long who's behind him good battle between engine and Zakia that's for fourth overall remember the other races we've seen this morning of 20-minute races this master race [Music] in 83 to 26 teams the Masters of James lightning series this is a series of races around the country this stop this weekend happens to be at the at the race track here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as part of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion you see that coming up in your night going past the back markers and have you seen earlier races that might affect things arborlon with a 30-second lead over Treasury who in turn has seven seconds over the third place car of long then it's another 15 back to engine and he's got less than a second ahead of Zakia those are the top five cars are Berlin the BMW Trent arena Daytona Prototype long in the Lola car 18 then ended in the Audi's a key in a Ferrari 86 it's interesting to think of the concept of racing they were running Sebring they were running Daytona they were running LaVon they were running the endurance races this is a 40 minute sprint race different concept different style different way of racing totally different in terms of what they're trying to achieve and there is bill Avila that is the leader the number 42 and he's now having to work his way through the back lockers and you can see that he is about to come up and put a lap on the number 88 car being driven by a boy and that is currently the 9th place car so Miller Berlin has reached the point where he is lapping the ninth place car on the track and Bennett in that number of 30 Lola that started up is now a support team spot and the next cars that he's going to encounter to pass are the Corvettes of Tony Garvey number 53 and Rob Morgan number 64 Bill arborlon waves at the BMW that he went by right there that's a big drink by John Edwards Phil arborlon only has one speed and that's fast it doesn't matter whether he's in a modern race car or whether he's in a historic race car buckle smoke out of a bid it looks like he locked up a wheel of braking and turned to turn signal on and he is totally in control of this race he has been from the very start the guy who might have challenged and Frank Bennett unfortunately spun at the beginning as a result in fact Frank Bennett was up to 14 and he's now being shown back in 16th so for whatever reason he may have had another problem and dropped back just a couple of positions so Greg Bennett not likely to be able to move up and challenge at the very top of you we'll keep our eye on Bennett's progress and right now as you mentioned he dropped back two spots of being passed by Lauren begs in the Porsche 996 our scooter gable in the BMW m3 and continued to work his way through it's dropped some more he may be having a properties now shown in 17th position we'll keep our eye on him possible problems with that car mechanically there goes engine by in that beautiful outie number two being pursued by is a Kia in the Ferrari but that challenge has dropped a little bit to his that gets dropped about two seconds behind Engan no maybe they're just breathing the cars a little bit long way to go we are about 10 minutes into a 40 minute race coming up on 11 minutes so we're not even 1 for 2 the way through but still some competition some battles on the track there we see the number 21 car being gripped by John Cavanaugh that's a night that's a Mustang right there that 1996 Ford Mustang and he is about to get lapped by that number 2 car of 2005 ow d r8 has already been lapped by the top three cars and now the number 4 car is about to go by that Mustang a better continues to drop into stand he's now down to 18th it could be that that car is stationary although we don't know it we like to watch it see if he does come by flex up cars are in the racing pit line to making stops and that was Craig benefit was that it was pretty minute coming out in that black car with the with the green accents so obviously he's had some kind of an issue that brought him into the pits but it is allowing him to get back out on to the racetrack whatever the problem may have been looks like the fog is finally lifting here a little bit at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca it was a little moist on the track early this morning and in fact we saw during the historic Trans Am race Mike joy running around with his windshield wiper on but now most of the fog seems to have at least dissipated a little bit still a little gray out there but I have no doubt as the day goes along the fog will disappear that's the way it always happens here dramatic change into weather is Friday and Thursday the weather out here trackside just in the 90s today you need a jacket if you're spectating out there [Music] nice shot of Zakia the Ferrari there's bill ah Berlin villa Berlin once again in that 1999 BMW v12 LeMond racer continuing to go around this track bill our Berlin of course the name who's had a lot of success primarily in the GT world but he is truly mr. BMW in the United States imagine it could involve the basic absent Remender school love the way you just dice through all that you had one of the back markers going into the pits and you had another prototype that he was able to squeeze right by and arborlon didn't think twice he just looked through it cut right between them yeah he split the two cars right up the middle one on his left one on his right and went down into turn 11 getting by both of you mentioned one was taking the pit exit out of turn 10 it's great just to listen to that engine BMW v12 so you got that left turn signal on looking at the rear of the car and as you can see you know once again this is a 40 minute race some of the car is already having problems normally on pit lane during those 20 minute races you won't see very many cars there if they have a problem that they will generally go right back into the paddock area but in this case some of the cars come in the whether they could get back out there because there is a racing series that they're competing in four points nationally so the question is can they come back in do a little bit of work and go back out that's Bennet right behind engine of course they're not on the same lap but this will be an interesting matchup as they come out of turn 11 and accelerate up the start/finish straight away engine in that number 2 Audi Bennet in the number 30 Lola and then it may try and make a move on him going into turn Wanek dives inside as he could any of the Andretti hairpin takes that short line engine goes wide comes into the corner but he has been passed by Bennett so Bennett regained at least one lap from Engan as they come out of 3 and that over into turn four that's really a smart move on Amy's point because Bennett is back in the pack really no sense in racing in miniature let him go by and not challenge and not have to worry about it Bennett now back up to 14th and after that stop let's see if he can continue his progress and toward the front that's the nineteen fifty that's the number 56 car being driven by P Philip II is a 2011 BMW m3 coming up under the bridge right now as it goes underneath that car currently is midway through the pack one CBC car is exiting the pits right there coming out right beside as they go through that turn complex yeah that folk develop a BMW is running 10th overall at the moment B Philippi and placin ski car 56 [Music] pop Allah comfortably comfortably in front as you mentioned he only has one speed and that's fast so he's certainly not backing off as he's continuing to drive that car to his potential [Music] and one of the day of revenues units windshield wiper as he goes who turned five and starts climbing the hill up toward the corkscrew you know I mentioned that off Erland was born in Germany his family was he was actually born without a beach so I was thought up to the Southern California guy that's exactly what he is career started the 1970s actually started as a motocross driver and he was able to move up into emphases gtu series back in the late 80s he stayed there for about a decade or so ultimately winning the gtu championship and from there he went on to a number of things he also wrote really intriguing which was in 1996 he was the Peruvian Formula three champion how's that for a little bit of a left turn during your career how's that for some esoteric trivia I have not followed Portuguese formula 3 race he for a long time Peruvian Peruvian I began with a page that's a tactic he briefly ran in the the prototype series the Grand Am series at the same time we're still driving that BMW 325 for Turner Motorsports there you see the number 38 car sitting in the pits right there not exactly the way you want your day to go when you come out at Laguna Seca you want to be racing that's a 1991 d son that is in the pits and Craig Bennett has now moved up to ninth spot he's inside the top ten and the next car for him to overtake would be that the D Phillip people sense key BMW that we talked about just a moment ago they're the number 46 Orica that's a 2013 FL m o9 car that's come in had a pit stop and had to go back out not sure once again what the issue was down there but pit stop and slows you down Zaki and the Ferraris being haunted by a pair of BMW there for a long time you seem to be on the move and now that number 56 car this is for position on the track so Zakia right now who's in six being followed by the the BMW the de filippi de filippi car the number 56 car that 2011 BMW m3 GT right behind and Bennett right in the mix he's right behind that battle he is currently in a spot Zakia's 60 in that Ferrari car number 86 the people of Pete Wilson ski BMWs seventh Bennett 8th in car 30 [Music] timing and scoring is showing us that mark Brannon the 2001 Riley Scot part three has moved into the lead and that bill Overland is now in second place by 33 seconds [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's the issue they have a mandatory stop that they must do forth before during this series so once again this is a different series a different type of race than we're going to see the rest of the day they have to do a mandatory stop and as a result apparently opulence come in made his stop and in fact it looks like Brannon has made his stop as well so now Oberlin is moving back into the lead yeah they actually display a sign when the pits are open to the cars so that the drivers know when they can can come in but Zakia was being haunted by that BMW now getting a little bit of breathing room he showed at 6th place and arborlon showed now back in the lead in the 42 car mark Brannon second in the 77 Riley's got mk3 then it's Spencer Trenor II and Mark Brannon we can see is in the pit right now his mandatory stop good checking tire temperatures making sure everything's okay and they'll send him back out he's got a mandatory hold for a period of time he'll go back out on the track but that's why bill opera that was in the lead that briefly out of the lead again and we are in the second half of this race a little bit more than 20 minutes has gone by and less than 20 to go so midpoint of the event most of the cars seem to have made their fit soft or are in process of doing so and from there on forward it's going to be a sprint to the finish once the timing scoring monitor is sort itself out after the pit stops have been completed but a question about the fact that it is our Berlin back out front in that 1999 BMW v12 LMR car 42 Trenor ii ii in the riley daytona car 15 and the joiner long lola shown in third at the moment car 18 watching a battle on the track right now this is the number 53 car be cured by tony garmi it's a 2000 poor vet and right behind him is Rob Morgan driving at 2000 Corvette as the yellow and blue car so that battle is for position on the track those two Corvettes that are going after each other for eleventh and twelfth place right now an amazingly Craig Bennett now shown in sixth spot in car 30 now we know he has made a pit stop we saw his car in the pits earlier so from here on in he could be sprinting to the finish it's going to turn out to be an interesting second half of the race great comeback by Bennett if he's not going to stop again from think he dropped in 21st as it were 20 [Music] now whoops his way back almost into the top five and if he gets by the diesel the people ocinski BMW he will be in fifth spot and he's right behind them at the moment Bennet in the 30 Lola people if he presents the BMW are 56 there were watching the Joyner car thanks the long car that the number 18 that is the car that is being driven by well be driven by long it's a 2000 Lola b2k 10 that has done a pretty good job of dicing its way through the path but I have to point out the bill off early lead just keeps stretching out further and further just a couple laps ago he was up to about a 53 secondly after everybody else had made there it's easily have this race number fifteen car number eighteen car being driven but number fifteen car I should say right there being proved by Spencer trinary the Daytona prototypes he is well behind bill Avila and Trenor he's having a good day as he came in second in that race earlier this morning and looks like he's going to be second again here in this race second is better than third but it's not as good sure we would have liked that number 88 car continues to circle the track that's the March the March 83 G and I'd say we keep seeing a little bit of puff of smoke out of there as he down shifts coming through but once again engineer built that car back in 1983 March one of the great names and racing obviously started by Max Mosley Allen trees they they built some spectacular racing cars over the years I remember one of the more spectacular graphics on a March that ran in the MC GTC series earlier was Kent / Miller's Red Lobster for a car I don't know if you remember that but the front fenders were lobster claws on the top of the car the top of the cockpit was the lobster body we were talking yesterday about the fact that one of the great things about historic racing is people rightly so tried to keep the old paint schemes so you know whether it's coca-cola Red Lobster VFW whatever it may be they have the original paint schemes of these cars raced in who would have thought that when you were putting a paint scheme on a car in 1969 or 1982 or whatever it was that that paint scheme would still be popular today because of what historic racers are doing with and Bennett has now moved up and do fourth overall behind that number 18 Joyner long 2000 Lola b2k 10 that we talked about as he has gotten around Zakia in the Ferrari and Travis Engan in the Audi as well as he D Philippi will sense keep BMW so Bennett up to fourth overall but a lap down at least from your race leader bill arborlon bill overland once again in the 1999 BMW v12 LMR checked out at the beginning of the race Frank Bennett and that spin coming out of the first complex of turns and as a result has been trying to work his way back up and while he's done a great job of moving his way through the field catching up to Bill Aqualand I think is going to be a monumental task but I'm just not sure that it can be accomplished remember this is a 40 minute race with 34 minutes into it just just a little over five minutes remaining here in this race for the Masters endurance series there's Greg Bennett the black car green accents 2002 2012 Lola be 1280 he's on fire going around this track that once again that first spin set him up for you know that paint scheme is reminiscent of the Patron tequila cars that ran in the instance series and the prototypes also black and green [Music] that's always interesting and looking at what date schemes stand out wonder which ones can be seen I always see that with drivers hummuses particularly especially open-wheel racing when you see the drivers helmet so much and the simpler the helmet the more it stands out sometimes they put too much graphics on it and kind of blends together one of the great ironically racing helmets that was so easy to see was Derek Daly's because of the yellow and black and the very simple design if you look at Elio Castro nemesis helmet a very simple design and it stands out right there the number 18 car it's a you know great helmet stands out in that Lola b2k 10 2015 Falls that Whitney Hall racecar driving for three years really the car series is very similar yep Bennet just got by long and he's just at the entrance to turn seven at the top of the hill he's got a Porsche a flying lizard car that he's gonna try and get by as they come down off the hill about the flying lizard guy how quickly can I get out of there right now granted now these two cars are battling for position out because Bennett is taken and pretty much owns it but still you don't want to get in the way but an endurance racing you know the guys who are doing this know that they know how to get out of the way of those faster cars this series a little bit less of it but it's always important remember you've got those fast cars coming up behind you it got to get out of the way [Music] spencer Treader is the last car for Bennet to try and overtake that is still on the same lap as his Harmelin is one lap ahead of looks like the entire feel as they come from here he's completed 23 laps everybody else is on lap 22 and in descending order that Lola what a classic name within racing Lola you know started back in 1958 by Erik broadly and it has built so many successful race cars over the years in so many different series [Music] yeah I mentioned that March graphic Kemper Miller's Donovan lobster car that was also a beautiful Lola coupe Roy woods racing had that was spectacular right whereas yeah just another gorgeous car another very very pretty Lola and a very successful car as well well once again we haven't seen a lot of bill on Berlin on our TV screens today because he's just run away with this race you know he's been in control since the word go and he has not relinquished more importantly I don't think he's let up on the gas I mean you know he's laughed pretty much the entire field at this point with less than ten minutes to go he is easily going to be able to pull off the victory in this way [Music] going back to talking about Bill Oberlin you know his career at MC GT you ran from 87 to 90 for e88 pools five wins did all kinds of good stuff then he moved into M says GTS to class in 1995 he had a record seven consecutive polls he had five wins he's won that 12 hours of sebring he's done all kinds of great things in the series and and he continues to race to this day and does a great job at all levels in car racing and his name has been synonymous with BMW throughout his career yeah of course of late he was right for a number of years and is racing with the Great Hall letterman Lanigan team and then moved over to Turner Motorsports boy just done a great job racing all the way for BMW once again arisen out of Manhattan Beach or down the beach I should say Southern California but boy he's been all over the world driving all over the world driving with the BMW teams Zakia doing a great job with that Ferrari as well number 86 the 550 GT one he's running sixth overall behind Travis Engan in that number two Audi [Music] but arborlon has been dominant Trenor a very solid second spot in that number 15 SunTrust Daytona Prototype followed by Bennett in car number 30 running third in his Lola in spite of the spin early on in the event that dropped him way back to the tail end of the field I think he went from 2nd to 21st he's worked his way back up to third overall and he is in pursuit of Spencer Chari the best he can hope for at this point is a second spot [Music] that Ferrari 550 out there continuing to circle the track that was being driven by Zakia great car doing very well the interesting story about that is with Ferrari built the 550 they did not intend that to be a race car a lot of privateer teams were the ones who took that on and we have a checkered flag here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Bill Overland congratulations to him in that number 42 1999 BMW v12 easily dominating from the green flag all the way to the checkered flag elapsed the entire field as he gets a victory here in this race today and he's doing burnouts around the track he's waving to the fans he slows the car down then lights it up you can see the tire smoke coming out from behind the cars just gone under the mother's bridge now heading through turn five on his way up the hill laying lots of rubber out on the track much to the appreciation of the fans they're pretty happy to see it so arborlon is your race winner in dominant style shredder E is going to be your second place car at Daytona Prototype Bennett in at number 30 Lola after that early mishap recovers to a third place still a fine drive for him yeah and you're often you can only be left with the wonder of what would have happened at Kraig Bennett been able to not spin on first lap or at least get the car fired and out there right away and we're looking at a picture the number 46 car that's the David Lockwood car that 2013 Orica that is stuck out on the track bill arborlon continues came down the corkscrew waving at the crowd doing a few more burnouts what a great day what a great victory for him has never done well at LeMond that's probably the only thing that probably bugs bill overland he's never gotten a podium never got to victory at LeMond but everywhere else he's raised he's done well taking a quick look at some of the highlights of the race remember this is that very first lap Bill arborlon stretched out right off the bat and then Craig Bennett trying to get a little bit of an advantage to catch up as much as he can just spun coming out of the first complex of turn installed and as a result could not catch up if the exit of three just into the infield just before they got under the tire bridge between three at four but Greg Bennett was able to come back he was quite a ways back at one point he's shown in 21st place and worked his way up through ultimately ending up in third but it was Bill Oberlin who controlled the race from the word go never being challenged ultimately ending of lapping the entire field coming away with the victory here in this master's of endurance Legend series race Greg Bennett well he finished third but second well that went to Spencer Trent rien in 2006 Reilly 11 Daytona Prototype the Joyner long number 18 Lola b2k ten finished in fourth and Travis Engan and that number two Audi r8 LMP was fifth so once again congratulations to bill aberlin all right time for our next race here at Laguna Seca the FIA EMSA GT GTX a a GT these are cars built between 1973 and 1981 this is the bottoms cup race kind of an alphabet soup a little bit of everything but basically think of this as the the classic GT racers from the the 70s this is a pretty classic era into the 80s as well in fact we're gonna start off by giving you the grid we've got a couple of 930 5s up front one being driven by Bruce Canepa in 1979 Porsche 935 and the Charles Miller near Berg and in 1980 Porsche 935 k3 next up Ken M spent in car 20 1976 deke on Monza alongside him will be mike Thurlow car 53 1968 Chevrolet green and if you were thinking you haven't seen enough Porsche 935 lately well all you do is be right here Zac Brown we know that name well the 1981 Porsche 935 and right behind him is William chip Connor in a 1980 Porsche 935 J and if you like wide Corvettes you're in for a treat as next up is 88 a Jim plot and a 1979 Greenwood Corvette and behind him a 1976 Greenwood Corvette driven by Jordan Taylor car 48 Martin Lauver has a 1979 Porsche 935 Richard Goldsmith is in a 1976 deaqon Monza Ranson webster's in car 42 a 76 Porsche 935 a 72 Porsche 911 our RS our next Eric joiner car 48 X Jeff Lewis is in 1974 Porsche 911s and Steve Walker is a 1973 BMW CSL 61a Allen Benjamin 75 Porsche RSR 3 litre 74 Porsche 934 driven by Ernie spot a junior car 5-7 shambleau Briscoe a 1973 BMW CSL Brad Brisco 1876 Corvette Tommy mcglennan car 68 76 Porsche 934 a 76 Datsun 240z driven by David Martin Alex McDowell in 1979 Datsun 280zx Chris Drake is a 1976 Porsche RSR then a singleton in a Porsche RSR 1974 vintage 77429 11 Cameron Hayley car 0-1 Adam Corolla another name we know well 1979 Porsche 935 and lr Sierra one in 1973 Porsche 911 RSR Doug Stevens and a 75 deke on Monza 75 Porsche RSR reindeer Becker next up William Lyon in a Porsche 914 six from 1970 beside a 1975 Porsche RSR triggered by and Ruth Larson Steve Schmidt car 93 1976 Porsche 935 k3 and Brian Redman r-25 a 75 BMW 3 litres CSL James Lorenson 277 Porsche 930 4/5 and Charles Kristensen and a 1973 Porsche RSR we've already got one car that's off the track that's the number 15 car a Corvette being driven by Brad Briscoe he's got some issues and it looks like they're pushing him off the track so he's not going to be able to see the green flag as we start this Bonhams Cup race for the 1973 through 1981 cars for johnson 74 BMW CSL Byron Sanborn anyone Porsche 924 gt-r see some familiar names Rick that we've seen in other races you've got lrc arrow you've got Bruce kanafeh who's having a exam race charles near burg who was running bill la Kurland well you think about it there 20-minute races they've got a great opportunity to come out not thrashing themselves around too much and if you got a couple of cars it's a great way to be able to get some some great seat time as well and every driver will tell you is seat time at any track is the most valuable thing you can get so they're going to get one more parade lap behind the pace car as they go around the track here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca you know I commented earlier that it's unusual to see three maserati bird cages in one spot at one time same holds true for some of the cars in this event how long have been since you've seen 3d con bonzes together I think there were only about a dozen or so built total so we have a boat nearly a quarter of all the decon Monza's that were ever built that are out there right now you talk about the Greenwood Corvettes those wide-body kits that are out there you know which was it it was interesting because some people tried to put those on the streets and they've just never had the same appeal looking at him on the street but when they're on a racetrack that wide-body kid on the Corvette there you see that one of the back of the pack right there as it begins to come into the charm it just has such a great look to it it was very effective for what it needed to do which was to hide those great big huge tires to give them the grip that they needed to be able to looking at our grid we've got four decon Montes incredible very successful card it's day to build I think back in Indiana and remember it was a Chevy Monza so it was a you know taking a car that most people even today when was last time you shot saw Chevy Monza on the street you know even at a collector car auction they're not cars that are generally well appreciated but that deaqon Monza in its day was a great race car and this was not your father's deaqon Monza the engine was moved way back to improve the balance and the weight distribution in that car and they were again very competitive kennefa and near burg in the front row and a couple of Porsche 935 yeah Mark Thurlow and a Chevrolet green wooden right behind him Zac Brown in the 1981 Porsche 935 so once again they're just forming up for the start of this race and we're gonna get a green flag as they come on to that front straightaway very soon pace car lights are out that car should take the exit out of turn ten drivers left there he goes cuts across the front row and the front row is released to the pole-sitter and they'll be looking for a green flag as they make that left hander down in turn 11 and start to accelerate leave the field up the start/finish straight away here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca it's a pair of Porsche 935 s on the lead and the front row and Bruce Canepa takes out right off the bat gets the lead of the head of Charles near Berg they are gonna go in the first turn one two and it is a green wood Corvette a 1968 me trip by Mark Thoreau that's a third but the battle behind them goes on a couple of Porsches battling behind that Greenwood Corvette but Porsche is dominating the head of this steel kennefa pulling out a decent lead already he's got about four or five car lengths over near Berg as they go under the tire bridge to turn four they'll go up that short straight that takes up under the mothers bridging over into turn five which is a favorite passing zone people like to dive on the inside because that we've got a nice Bank on that corner as they start up the hill yeah for a moment I thought chip connor was gonna take a look inside of Zac Brown's warship but wasn't quite able to pull it off and so as a result he's backed off a little bit but now we see this field as it strung out good news is it got everybody C appears to have gotten safely through turn number one and Bruce can open that 1979 Porsche 935 has a very small lead over Charles near bourbon near burg poor van in his rearview mirror you have thermo putting the pressure on their burgers they come down the hill out of the court shoot just think about the difference for kennefa he drove that javelin and now he's in the 9:35 two completely different cars have vastly different creatures of both in terms of performance and in the way they handle because this is a very well in terms of it that the handling discs are significantly better than that Trans Am car for multiple reasons between a this particular car is built in 1979 compared to those the javelin which built almost a decade earlier but more importantly it's the way the chassis is built in the way it's laid out this is a road car this was designed to be a road car versus that pony car which was designed for looks for fun and turned in and the transept car a bit of a brute if this car has a little more finesse so to speak looking for thorough still challenging near bird for that second spot can't get ad Underberg still hanging on and at number 70 a kennefa in the number 12 car is your race leader Jim Connor an 88 running in the fourth spot followed by brown in car 18 goes Porsche Porsche Corvette and three more Porsches not your top six Martin lobber holding the tail end spot [Music] and you got to give that Corvette a lot of credit because that's a 1968 Corvette still racing up with those guys that were the cars that were built a full decade after that and designed for racing from the word know you gotta remember the Porsche 935 was really it's not a 911 with with with sloping front fenders it was designed as a race car from the word go look them on the back further back of the pack we've got a 1979 Datsun 280zx as the number 38 car that is going through the pack a couple of Z cars because with number 47 car right behind it is a 1976 Datsun 240z another couple of cars great Grace's they're battling for 18th and 19th but they're having a battle as if they were going for first and second good battles throughout the field so don't just keep your eye on the lead out here look at the rest of the cars fighting amongst themselves and there are battles all over the track and again remember we have 45 cars that started this race one of them pulled off the very beginning of 45 cars in this race that all want to even if they can't win the race they may not be competing a front for the number one position but their goal is to win wherever they can on the track and we got a battle right now with at number thirty Porsche 979 1979 Porsche 935 under attack by Jordan Taylor that's right Wayne Taylor son in a 1976 Greenwood Corvette yeah Mark Millar trying to get by that Corvette as they go up the hill and that's Ranson Webster in that pink and white Porsche behind them that car always stands out you see that color you immediately know who it is would you paint your racecar pink it stands out absolutely you're looking for something different and that's always what it's about what makes it different I love the number 48 on this Greenwood Corvette of course the number the damn car so famous this one criminy in by Jordan Taylor Wayne Taylor son Ricky Taylor's brother a great driver in his own right driving for his father in the incest series in the gtp Series now behind the wheel of this Corvette and currently shown is running seventh overall behind Martin lobbers number 30 Porsche 935 meanwhile up front the battle for the lead with Bruce kanafeh in that 1979 Porsche 935 he has almost a second lead over the second 935 Porsche being driven by Charles near Berg then it's about a five-second gap to the 1968 for Vette driven by Mark furlough Dennis another second of the half back to Conor in the 88 car he's driving a Porsche 935 j1e in the four spot and plot in 88 a the 1979 green wood Corbett running fifth overall he's about 8 seconds back from fourth place and right now we're looking at a battle as it goes up the main straight number 44 a 1980 triumph tr8 Oulu 44 car he is leading his way up through there being followed by a Porsche 934 v and the 1973 Porsche RS are trying to to that position and that's the battle for 29th place so everywhere you look on this track somebody is trying to do that we were talking earlier today about Mark Donohue and Roger Penske and there we see a car that number six Porsche that the car is being driven by a large arrow in 1973 Porsche 911 RS are some of the greatest colors that Sunoco blue the yellow pinstriping and the number six so closely associated with Mark Donohue mark Downey had such a tremendous racing career winning so much in so many different areas realize we think about Mardon it was he only raced professionally for a decade about 1966 to 1975 was getting fresh fertilizer and during that time he came to dominate the track he dominated the Canon for a period of time he won the Indy 500 in 1972 he ran NASCAR he ultimately ended up in Formula one one of the greatest Formula one drives of all time as his Drive in Canada as he drove a privateer car for Roger Penske and finished third in the rain Mark Donohue truly one of the great drivers of all time and things have heated up at the front looking at the gap between kanafeh and their Burt they're almost in what would be called a photo finish they're going to be encountering traffic and that's going to throw that out the window but Kenneth has lead over near Burt now less than a tenth of a second the last time they cross the start/finish line here they come out of turn 11 now they're practically nose to tail as they accelerate up the start/finish straight away report that the Canopus car the lead car but a smoke coming out of the back of the car as he accelerated out of turn 11 and he's diving down into the Andretti hairpin that got a run into a whole bunch of traffic as he gets into that infield area yeah you see the number 87 car Byron's sanborn that Porsche moving over very quickly to let him go by and everybody else doing the same thing no sense in getting in a battle with the lead of this race let them go by you're not battling him the problem is if you are in a battle you don't want to ease off too much because you don't want to lose your own place at the same time once again Bruce Canepa in the number 12 Porsche nine three five and you see him coming up on that number 44 the Bill Warner car that Porsche the triumph tr8 and now that's in between that that tra is in between the two lead cars for just a moment until Charles near burg chews them up it spits them out and away we go down into the course yeah that traffic has a lot of kind of give a little breathing room as they start their descent in the trucks that's about a five story drop from the top of the hill through eight while these two cars are trying to stay within an eyelash of each other they now have about a seven and a half second lead over the third place car of Mark Thoreau Lamarr Thurlow at 1968 Chevrolet Corvette a Ricky Taylor up into sixth spot and his poor background of the 48 he's about three seconds behind claw in the 88 Greenwood Corvette so you could see some changes happening there we are past the midpoint of this race for about 12 minutes into a 20-minute race so still plenty of time for lots of things to happen before the checkered flag waves so far dominated by those two nine thirty fives up front to get a cure bed than a Porsche and a couple more Corvettes in fact if you look at the tom neat places right now the top eight places are dominated we just saw a good battle between the Adam Carolla and that number 70 Porsche 935 who's trying to get around David Martin and the 47 Datsun 240z and oh in the number 88 car Jim POIs has spun looks like he's in the infield I believe that's the exit apparently he's in that gravel trap that kitty litter trying to drive his way out he's going to get it back out but he's also go to bring a lot of junk on to the track with him as you can see the pebbles and rocks coming out of the bottom of that car as he goes through turn four now that's gonna make that turn a little bit slippery as these cars get into that there's gonna be some marbles out there before they can be cleaned off at the end of the event Corolla did get live that 47 car up David Martin that was a battle for 17th overall [Applause] Newburgh is doing his best to keep Canepa honest the gap now seven tenths of a second between the first and second place cars kanafeh in near burg 12 and 7 da Jordan Taylor we see him continue to work through the field he is now in that Corvette that number 48 Corvette has worked his way up to fifth spot now he is 31 seconds behind the lead pack but he is doing his best to try to move up through the field and try to gain as many positions as he possibly can well went plus spun he gifted Taylor of position as he came through there and Taylor took advantage of it next man for him to get repeat a chocolate chip Conner in 88 but I think he's beyond reach at this point he's well out ahead of Taylor probably about the 19 seconds up leaders continue to work their way through traffic yeah it's interesting when you look at the the width of that car once in with that Greenwood body kid on the on the back and in the front and is such a huge car compared to those Porsche 935 or even going by that triumph tr8 the number 40 and you really find out how wide it is when you try and lap traffic or squeeze through small old just can't do it a lot of car a lot of fiberglass on that he tosses it drift that works food SWAT to car like he's in a drifting contest well those who are sitting up in the corkscrew when Jordan Taylor goes by you get quite a show because he is working hard trying to make up as much time as he possibly can he maybe 19 seconds back of the place ahead of them but he's working hard to get as close as he can meanwhile up front the battle continues between Bruce kanafeh and Charles near Berg in those two 935 s and it doesn't seem to close up an awful lot Charles near Berg depending upon traffic you know gets a little bit of a you know ease up into a little closer to the can of a car but he just can't seem to reel them in as a result seem to be sired in second place right yeah we just saw one driver hang is far about the window and point to his left indicating they can't about passed me on the left and even way over to the right to give them plenty of racing room because he knew canva was coming by with Newburgh in soon we had the same thing happened with near burgers he was going through the corkscrew catching up to one of the dots easy cars the david partin car that he came up right behind and now but you've got traffic you've got back markers going on to the front straightaway but still I think there's gonna be about a solid one second at least between the crews Canepa car and the Charles near Burke car as they go under the timing stripe yeah in fact it's about a full second or so so as a result unless there's an issue with with traffic as we begin to wind down and get close to the finish of this race it's going to be really hard for near Burt to pull anything off that back now it's up to it to secondly yeah it's gonna depend on traffic that can either make it or break it and kennefa and uber both very good at going through traffic if they catch a bad break however things could change or someone could get in their way not see them coming and block them but they have reached the point where they have laughed the 16th place car on the track so there's only 15 cars on the lead lap right now there's a total of 35 cars running there were had been running that have completed lap so far in this event that batch of traffic really helped kennefa considerably stretched it out to almost 2 seconds 1.9 second lead over near burg in the 70 car we were talking about the decon Monza's if you look just ahead of Bruce Canepa one of the number three cars is a decon monza that's out on the track right now that's a car that's being driven by Richard goldsmith he's in number 8 number 42 car is at Porsche 976 with a unique pink and white paint job that we were talking about just a little bit earlier Ken Epps men's decon moms it did not start nor did Bill Allen's so a couple of them never got the green flag for this event hopefully if they've got the problems of wider and they could get those cars back out for this afternoon and Zac Brown who started the race only got two laps in in Tony looks like we've got ten cards that we're supposed to be in there which this race who never took the checkered flag a short just little bit earlier but most of them still in the fray kennefa stretches his lead now to two and a half seconds as the clock ticks down on this event the traffic has really helped Canepa and he's moved a little bit further away from near birth in that 70 portion the kennefa your race leader car 12 near birth second in car 70 mike Thurlow the corvette 53 third Conor in the 88 44th and Trenton walking watching right now a orange 1973 BMW CSLB Chandler Briscoe and there's Jagermeister colors great looking car very valuable car as so many of these a car that is the Porsche [Music] smoke come out of that Jagermeister BMW - I noticed Bessie went down through the corkscrew and it could just be a function of burning off fuel or oil as during the down shifts or it could be a sign of a bigger problem or so they're still out of the track still enjoying it look at the body on the back of that number 88 car Bruce kanafeh that continues to lead we get the checkered flag and he is going to win the firt the this race of the day Bruce Canepa not bad he did well in the Trans Am race earlier today and now he's going to do well in this race as well all right time for our next race this is group 6a 1963 through 1966 this is the GT cars over 2500 CCS and you've got a classic battle at the front a Chevrolet Corvette 1966 Cal Kelly listed on top 32 and Lauren libel and a 65 Cobra AC car 96 alongside the Battle of General Motors and Ford Tommy story and 75 another Corvette behind them and Jim Gallagher alongside him so he's got a Corvette as well in 16 a Rob Walton has a 1964 Shelby Cobra Jeffery Abram simin a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette and then we get a Ferrari this wasn't different by Gunnar Jeannette classic EMSA racecar driver to 1965 Ferrari 250 LM beside him Charles McKee in a 1966 Shelby Mustang John chip fudge in a 1966 bizarre any miss Irene egt a Craig Carter in a Chevrolet Corvette Brad olden Brooke r94 three-fifty and crank Bennett at a Cobra 289 car 98 first run he has a 1964 Corvette Peter Reid as the 1966 Ford GT 350 forests trade has a 65 Shelby gt350 in Linn Park is in a Shelby Cobra 289 cars on the track now on their face lap Jim Cantrell drive hit a 64 Chevrolet Corvette Michael 61 Jaguar e-type Steve Park and the Shelby Cobra 289 Shelby gt350 driven by Lindsey blah Tim Park is a Cobra through 289 John Memphis T has a 1966 Shelby gt350 there's a Corvette driven by Fred Yankel from 1964 and a 1965 Ford Mustang driven by Robert Stockwell Edward Hugo in a 66 Chevrolet Corvette a Bentley 66 Chevrolet Corvette a 63 Chevrolet Corvette took by Bruce Trenor ET we've heard that name before and cold Britain in a 64 Jaguar e-type how about a 1964 ESO revolta gt3 I eat right head romanovski is a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Sandra McNiel has a 64 Porsche 904 GTS true alcázar as a 66 Shelby GT ACV Augustine next to the 65 Chevrolet Corvette from the 65 Sunbeam tiger if I start Shelby and goose Kawaguchi in a 65 Shelby gt350 I wish I had more information on that Mercury Comet Caliente looking at the paint job there was one like that that was built by blood but more for the African safari rally so you wonder what the history of this one is yeah I wonder if that could be the same car because the paint scheme is the same or was it just enough to look the same way either way it's out there now and it's a great car to get to watch it let's get a great field mostly Corvettes and cobras which is a great battle from the 1960s but we've got some interesting other cars out there like that Ferrari 250 LM more important at 65 Ferrari not only is interesting car it's also being driven by Gunnar Jeannette an insular with some history who is a great race car driver in his own right so it'll be interesting to see what he could do in that Ferrari 250 lights out on a pace car takes the pit exit turns that over to the front row Kyle Kelly in the Corvette 32 Lauren Leibel in the Cobra 96 they go down to turn 10 make the left-hand turn and head up the start/finish straight away rest of the field behind him they're looking for a green flag good nice slow pace everybody bunches up behind tight grouping as they get ready for the start coming up to the green flag the Kyle Kelly Corvette and the Cobra right beside them waiting holding back getting the green flag and now they're off and it looks like that Cobra on the outside has the advantage better acceleration when he got into a higher gear he just squirted by that Corvette Dover Don inside the Corvette taking the outside line then it looks like it's Tommy's store in his Corvette trying to move himself up in a second and get around Kyle Kelly's Corvette can't get it done as Kelly tucks in behind Warren Leibel in that Cobra so it's the Cobra and a pair of Corvettes Leibel gets a little sideways coming out of turn three as does Tommy's story as well but the battle is on for the lead between that number 32 66 Corvette and we've got a car getting off just a little bit I think that was Jim well Jim Gallagher and Tommy Store the blue and white car is a car that got off just a little bit the silver car that's the one being driven by Jim Gallagher that's seven Corvette as they're trying to get their way up the hill but right now Lauren libel and that's 65 Cobra has the lead and you see a drift from Kyle Kelly in the Corvette yeah I'm not sure if Starr got pushed off a retread Nick a shortcut to see if he can move himself by Kelly in the second place whatever it didn't work and he actually lost the position as a result of Jim Gallagher was able to get by and move into the third spot coming down through the corkscrew Kyle Kelly in the number 32 Corvette working it hard trying to find different lines and air he's going to need one side of law reliable but not enough to make it stick he's trying to find a different line that might give him an advantage over Lauren libel but so far hasn't been able to do that and he's got to be careful because if he makes a mistake Tommy's story and Jim Gallagher are right behind Gallagher really charging in that silver Corvette card over 75 keep your eye on him he's gonna try and move himself in the second place back to look like he's trying to pull alongside Kyle Kelly as they go off the front straight can't get it done Kelly keeps the inside line as they go into the Andretti corner then swings across in front of Gallagher Gallagher has to back off meanwhile Lauren libels building up a little bit of a lead not a lot but just enough to make him feel comfortable because the problem with Kyle Kelly's he knows he's under attack by that Corvette from behind although they seem to reel him in just a little bit coming out of that first set of turns now they're going up the hill of the see if he can pull him in just a little bit more still a very tight battle at the lead between the Cobra and the Corvettes it's a Cobra out front six and he's got three Corvettes right behind him before you get to rob Walton and his Shelby Cobra car number 10 that's running in the fifth spot now there's a little bit of a gap and once again we see the Kyle Kelly Corvette slide just a little bit as it comes out of that turn going on to that back side now they're lining up at the corkscrew we saw this the last lap as well where Kyle Kelly's front find a slightly different line drifts a little bit looks to the inside but can't get a position on Lauren libel yeah rear end almost broke loose on that slug out to the left he headed in the right direction but he's right on the tail of libel as they go down into 11 tried to get alongside couldn't do it but very very close good tight race he is putting a lot of pressure on Lauren libel trying to force him into a mistake but as it worked so far and libel in that Cobra seems to have better acceleration up the front straightaway and can open up a gap once again by the time they get down to the end ready hairpin it's interesting is they get into the twisty parts that's actually work how Kelly in the Corvette does a better job from here on up he'll slowly but surely reel him in until they reached the point of the court we will he'll likely be right behind him again soon he doesn't wear out his tires Jim Gallagher and the 1967 Corvette Coupe right there followed by Tommy steyr in the Corvette can yeah Kelly driving very aggressively sliding his car all over the place that Nighy Kenzie's nose-to-tail the Cobra and the Corvette as they go through five and start their climb to the top of the hill and there he's right up beside him tries to take a look to the inside can't quite pull alongside he takes the look but he can't do it that he'll close in again as they get close to the corkscrew he's trying to pull alongside but he just doesn't have enough to seem to be able to get right beside and there we've got some smoke coming out of the front tires of the lead car that Cobra as he has some intensive braking going into the corkscrew and once again Kyle Kelly hangs the tail out coming down the hill from the corkscrew shall we putting the pressure on and Leibel walked up the right front wheel you can see the smoke boiling off again tries to get a long side Leibel as they come out of turn 10 going down into turn 11 can't do it on the inside he's gonna happen to tuck in behind but again watch them as they accelerate up the front straightaway the Cobra seems to have a little bit more grunt and opens up the gap every time yeah that's what it's all about this is what is giving the the advantage to Lauren Leibel is this front straightaway where he just has the horsepower to pull it up and then from this point on we'll watch a great race as Kyle Kelly can just reel him in but he just doesn't have enough at the corkscrew when they finally get back there to be able to pull it off look a little further back in the pack all kinds of great competition that's the number 91 car that we're seeing as it's going along tim park tim park is he's trying to kind of catch up right there great competition all the way through and you know when you see a cobra out on the street i can almost always guarantee you it's not a real cobra when you come here this is the real deal real Cobras racing the way they were meant to be raced when Carroll Shelby designed them and Tim Park is being shadowed by Bruce Trenor II in a Corvette car number 8 that's a 1963 model a couple of good Shelby battles going on Shelby GT 350s battling one another is a pair coming through the infield right now white with the blue stripes and red with the white stripe far as 15 and 59 Robert stock well in the 15 car and Lindsey Ross in the 1966 version to the Shelby GT great marriage between Carroll Shelby and Ford alcohol with a little bit of action with a number 98 car a cobra coupe instead got a little sideways came off the road fortunately didn't hit anything as a result got back out safely watch the number nine car the Brad old and Brooke 1966 car as he is under a track by Charles McKeague in a 1966 Shelby Mustang both of them doing battle here at Laguna Seca the gap between libel and Kelly the lead Cobra and the pursuing Corvette last time they crossed the start/finish line was one second it's been consistent because of once again that drag race there he's able to build up a full 1 second lead from the last turn up to the timing stripe as they go past the flag but he just can't do anything else beyond that that's the lead right there 96 Loren liable in the lead Cobra being followed by Kyle Kelly in the 1966 Corvette Convertible 1967 Corvette being tripped by Jim Gallagher of coupe I'll Kelly using every inch of the track trying to gain some kind of an advantage and he's not as close as he has been as they get up to the top of the hill but watch good he's been driving that car so hard he may have used up some of his tires applying as much pressure as he can on race leader Loren libel and libel it's just pretty much ignored it and driven his race and hasn't faded at all he's got about a two or three car lengths lead as they come out of turn ten and Kelly just all the way off the pavement it kicks up a little bit of dirt drivers left with the left side wheels of that Corvette as he comes out of turn ten here they come up the start for the straightaway one more time and this is what Lyle can really shine in that Cobra the only mistake we've seen Leibel make was going into the corkscrew he locked up the front brakes for a brief moment but that's it he's done a perfect job of holding Kyle Kelly off for the rest of the race [Applause] that's the old and broken McKee battle this is the battle for eighth on the track there are full 17 seconds behind the leader but for each other well they are right nose to tail yeah we had 28 cars take the green flag for the start of this one and there's good battles throughout the fact battle 2 3 with Shelby's battle to lead some of the other Corvettes we were watching Spencer Chenery battling there earlier with one of the other cars Steve Park in his Shelby Cobra has got Trenor e right behind him now Stockwell has moved up in his Ford Mustang he was fighting with trinary earlier and this is 18th 19th 20th and 21st so again good battles throughout this 28 car field [Applause] [Music] Battle of cobras there in 91 and 97 I believe both the parks Tim Park and Steve Park won in a 64 Shelby Cobra GT echo Bert's 289 and a 62 Cobra 289 that's for 19th and 20th but that doesn't mean the competition is any less they are driving hard for there oh he's got a problem the 97 car waves his arm Steve Park puts his arm in the air has to pull off to the side that immediately lets Tim Park by and then has to pull off to the side of the track once again back up to the battle for eighth this has been the battle between Brad old and Brook and Charles McKeague new second-place car it looks like Gallagher is paid to move into second around Kelly so we were talking about the question as to whether Kelly had used up his tires in the battle of trying to get by Lauren liable it's very possible if that's the case and as a result we now have a change in the number two car with Jim Gallagher and a 67 Corvette Coupe taking it away from cow Kelly in the 66 Corvette meanwhile there you saw the key trying to take a look to the inside of old and Brook but couldn't quite pull it off we saw cobras battling we see Shelby gt350 s battling for vets battling they seem to be battling by making manufacturer in good groups all the way throughout the field the one we're looking at now is nine and two nineteen as Brad Oldenburg currently eight and two nineteen Charles McKee a Ford GT boat Shelby Mustang by the way you point out that there's a lot of the battles between the manufacturers going on so you've got Cobra versus Cobra Corvette versus Corvette I was looking to see where the busines Rini was it's back in 27th you know who he's battling these are revolta so the ether revolta the biz already have managed to find each other on the track so there's a Jaguar at a few other things out there there it is right there that's the number 14 car the 1966 misery knee GT but great cars I love the design of that also it's a great looking car look like the Marcos as well just a really special mark oh so that knows a little bit reminiscent of alum borghini Miura yes absolutely but it was a great era for Italian designing and that is a beautiful car it's great to see it not only back in at a race track but actually competing out there beautiful car Kelly has now dropped to four spot a story has gotten around him as well so it's liable in the 96 Cobra out front Gallagher in the Corvette 16 a second story in his Corvette 75 third and Kelly in the Corvette 32 running in fifth spot Walton in his Cobra has now moved up into the top five that's car ten now we're continuing to watch that number 14 car that is the Gazoo Eenie be driven by chip fudge and behind him is the number 111 car that's the key so revolta which is a silver car so you see that number 14 car coming up on the Corvette out of a fun battle right there that's Kelly yeah that's Kelly a serious problem Oh coming up underneath the right side of the car moves over and lets the busy Rini go by boy that's unfortunate that's not just a case of using up the tires he's got some serious issues and is it smoke tired does he have a right front suspension lot tire smoke of something under the right front side of the car looks like he's definitely got issues which is so unfortunate he had such a great battle going with more in libel there you see Lauren libel at number 96 Cobra they were battling so well and for whatever reason he's apparently come down with a problem and there's second and third that's the Gallagher car or the story Corvette as well that's the story Corvette the number 75 a 1965 car I don't think it was an engine problem for her Kelly because he was able to drive it around back and not too much smoke not putting oil down on the track he'll put it into the pits I'm sure and park it a lot of back markers they have to go through that it's really not cutting into Lauren libels lead here in this race at 1965 Cobra the black one easily heading out there and not having any problem and where once again about 13 minutes into this race or where the final third of this you'll notice the vent at the best look at that number 16 car the silver and black Corvette and look at the rear window is not a class four window it's a plexiglass room window there's a vent at the very top and that's designed to let air out so if the pressure didn't build up inside that number 75 car the story our car is right behind them as a result of the back markers he's gotten within range he's gotten within spitting distance and there's his seat not sure what that put that hand just you're meant for a moment it looked like he said passed me on the right side but the story went by on the left side Steuer hanged without a little bit coming down the corkscrew desperately trying to catch up to Jim Gallagher in the Corvette Kelly drove his car so hard at pursuit of libel that he had some sort of a failure we weren't sure what it was we know that he used up his tires pretty much but possibly a suspension failure in that car we find out any more information on that we will pass it on to you but a great drive by Kelly just saying and there he goes bye no oh as I saw the show that's all the white and red and for a moment I are white and blue and for a moment I thought and then we've got a problem we've got a side pipe hanging off that that's the number 91 cobrahead about so that's got to be a problem Tim Park yeah Tim Park you can see it off to the left and these guys have to be careful because the last thing you want is that thing flying off and that's gonna cause problems I think these two Corvettes behind to see that and trying to get how to safely get by if we keep corner workers would show that car a mechanical black flag indicating he's got a problem with the car and he needs to come in and stop their ghost story are trying to make a move on Gallagher as they work through the infield they're heading over into turn five not close enough to make the move yet let's see if he can do it when they get to the top of the hill that Tim Park Cobra with the dangling exhaust pipe right behind them and hopefully let me take it off the track soon before that thing hopefully it doesn't fall off that's the big concern if that side pipe comes off the car that can do some serious damage to somebody meanwhile this battle for second place on the track a pair of Corvettes in 1967 for 1965 story on inside oh he manages to go down Gallagher makes a mistake and Steuer takes advantage of it Gallagher got a little bit sideways and that's all story needed it was close enough dive right back around gallica are not going to be too pleased with that going to try and pay him back and regain that second position but he's running out of time before he can make a move and try and do that in the meantime libeled is just mortared off in the distance he's got probably a four plus second lead by now I was curious if Steuer once he got by was gonna be able to build up a lead and it looks like he actually is probably gonna be able to do that he's got a back marker between them which was is not going to help Gallagher Gallagher thought for a moment of going to the inside of the back marker but didn't get the sign from him so as a result I think he had the smart move to not go inside unless he knew he had the corner now he gets around him he's got to go head off libels lead now six seconds over spoiler who is currently in second spot libel in that 96 Cobra story in the white Corvette with a loose drive 75 event Gallagher the 16 Corvette the silver or grey one running in third spot Walton now moves up into fourth spot in his Cobra car number 10 we're watching Charles McKee in the blue stripes white car continuing to battle car number nine the 1966 Ford GT 350 the red car out there those two cars have been going at it all race long the gap between Steuer and Gallagher the last time they crossed the start/finish line was one second we'll try and see if Gallagher can make any inroads on that and get closer to the story to try and repass him for second spot but time is running out as we are in the closing stages of this race I think we're at a point we may see that one lap to go the next lap Warren Leibel has led from the beginning although as we mentioned Kyle Kelly had such a great job trying to catch up to him in the only early going and some kind of problem had to pull off the track there you see Kyle that Lauren Leibel car as he comes up on that number 99 car which is a Jaguar e-type being driven by Michael Doyle he's a back marker so it's just a matter of squeezing the five that each type truly one of the great designs upon the planet in fact Enzo Ferrari called the e-type the most beautiful car ever built the Enzo Ferraris willing to complement something other than a Ferrari the Jaguar as we said a little earlier we saw Lauren liable at one point lock up the front tire going into this corkscrew complex since then he has not put a wheel wrong although it's a lot easier but not make mistakes but you don't have Kyle Kelly all of that story has stretched his lead over Gallagher to about two and a half seconds now firmly in second spot Gallagher's looks like he's going to be a solid third because it's a long way back to the fourth place car which is now Walton in that number 10 Cobra Abramson in his Corvette now running in fifth spot that's currently 5 and that was followed by gonna be flagged in a 1965 Ferrari 250 LM and the race has come to an end with the checkered flag being given to Lauren libel who ran a great race in this Cobra once again fending off Kyle Kelly early on they had a great battle but when Kyle Kelly dropped out had his issues Lauren Leibel was no longer under attack Tommy Store in that 1965 Corvette comes in second Jim Gallagher in a 1967 Corvette Coupe having made that mistake at the corkscrew coming down the hill will finish third Rob Walton in a 1964 Cobra 289 is fourth and Geoffrey Abramson and a Corvette from 1964 will finish fifth so the top five two Cobras three Corvettes and gunner jeanette finishes sixth in that Ferrari 250 LM proud of a 526 followed by Brad olden Brook in the number nine 66 Ford GT 350 first of the Shelbys Charles McKee 8th in car 2 1 9 another Shelby Mustang and a Chevrolet Corvette of Craig Carter 9th car 31 Peter Reid and another Ford GT 350 in car 18 completes the top ten time for the last race of the morning before we take our lunch break here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca all part of the Rolex too many words here today Rolex mmm we're Alex Monterey Motorsports Reunion too many things going on I think of it as our MMR Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion yeah I got too many yards too many M's but this one is the race we've been looking forward to all morning the EMSA prototypes GTP WS c LM PDP they're all out there this is going to be a great race remember this is the 50th anniversary of M says so it's great to see these cars they're coming back out onto the track right now and again familiar days Bruce Canepa back out again Spencer Trenor e back out Travis Engan back out the a lot of cars that we have ser drivers that we have seen in earlier events in different cars getting lots of racing miles in today at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca all right let's talk about the grid as we see them head out on to the track rocky Moran jr. very appropriately driving the 1991 aar gurney Eagle Robert Kaufman is in a 1990 aar toyota Eagle Bruce Canepa in car number 14 1989 Porsche 962 see Eric joiner car 18 2000 Lalla to be k10 LMP Spencer trainer ease in 2006 Riley 11 Daytona Prototype Cal makers in the 1987 spice gtp Joel Miller in the 1992 Mazda rx-7 92 P and believe me when that car goes by you will know it it is the loudest thing out there Wade Carter at a 1984 Porsche 962 Lauren Mullen in a 1999 Pinos LMP Travis incan in a 2005 ow d r8 LMP mark Brannon 2001 Riley Scott mark 3 and an 86 Porsche 962 Joe Robillard car 101 Chris Leben Bergin in 1998 Riley in Scott and Taz Harvey in a 1992 spice PFR Elliott Forbes robinson car over 20 1995 Rowley and Scott Tom Dooley 1988 Porsche 962 see Andrew furry in 1998 Riley and Scott and Parker Johnstone in a 1988 spice gtp lights Zac Brown 1984 Lancia martini a Porsche 962 86 model Jim Taurus driving Robert Kaufman and in 1998 a our Toyota Eagle James Farrow in a 1981 Lola t600 vince Vento Betty 1984 March 84g 1989 fab car GTV Jon Lovitz Ross Myers has the 2003 Crawford Daytona Erik Endon home in the 1986 March 85 G beta for Jaguar XJ r5 Randall Smalley behind a wheel Dwight Merriman Nissan NP teen 90 the Giannone in a 1984 Porsche 962 and Ernie Spada jr. in a 1982 lola t600 and that's our grid for the EMSA prototypes group 7a once again the final race of our morning session in such a great collection of cars you know from the Eagles of the EMSA days you see those two up front that are just great looking cars great style great everything and then you've got the Porsche 962 s we've got the lights out on the pace car and they're coming around the final turn forming up their grid parity otis in the front row 98 and 99 once again Dan Gurney's Toyota Eagles just as they did decades ago continue to lead the pack here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and not oh we've got a problem we got the windscreen that has come off of the looks like the Porsche 962 right behind that see us coming off right up there the windscreen came off wow that's off of the Riley Daytona Prototype and it locked up the brakes because you couldn't see yeah I wasn't quite that maybe that was Bruce Canopus car I'm not quite sure which one that was I think was Bruce can up was 962 that may have had the problem but once again the windshield actually came off he'll back and then in turn one came off and kennefa locked up his brakes and went off drivers right into the dirt area we'll see if that's gonna cause a problem that is an impact area and the stewards are going to have to decide whether to leave that car there or possibly throw out a caution while they retrieve that car in it way [Music] so we've got the pair of Toyota Eagles up front and then right now we're looking the battle further in the pack as we watch all of these great insa prototypes go by once again all kinds of spectacular machinery from really a golden era of insa racing [Music] and it's everything from the the oldest stuff we see out here from the early 80s all the way up through 2006 Spencer Trenor II driving that 2006 Riley Daytona Prototype but it is rocky Moran jr. that is a race leader in that 1991 All American racers gurney Eagles Spencer Trenor II running second in his 2006 Riley 11th Daytona Robert Kaufman third in the number 99 Eagle then it's Cal Meeker and Bruce Kenema missing from that group and we've got a yellow flag on the track wearing a yellow flag worse situation because of that problem that Bruce Canepa had going into the first turn they've got some track vehicles out there so everybody has packed up and as a result they're gonna pull that car it's funny how you could actually see one of the drivers waving at us as he went by look lovely looking once again at these cars that's a Porsche 962 that number 10 car being driven by Jim Torres and we're gonna take a look at what happened remember once again Bruce Canepa there you see in the Canon 962 you see the windscreen peel off and then right about here it is actually gonna come off I think you did the right thing I think it's fortunate he pulled the hit the brakes started to go off the track and the problem is he got into the gravel and as a result he wasn't able to get out but a fortunate thing is that he did that and when he did that he went off the track and when the windscreen came off no other cars hit it got pretty dicey for just a moment there yeah and he did the right thing as you said that windscreen peeled often when he had pulled off there was no one behind him that was going to collect that that was sailing through the year and he was in an impact area that's why they put out the yellow flag so they can get him out of there too if someone else went off on the outside of that corner they would have collected Canepa as well but a short race for kennefa this time he'll regroup and be back out later today's running in several different races ain't it very well in his first two races of the day unfortunately not gonna get a chance to show what he could do and what you sit there and think of little things and you know it's the same thing in historic racing as in regular racing that one little mistake that causes a problem that ultimately forces a car out even though it wasn't a significant thing and might have been caught a little bit earlier but once again seeing that windscreen peel back and the scary you can imagine what it was like inside the cockpit to see that happening starting another lap under yellow as the pace car does stay out cars are starting to scrub their tires a bit wanted a little heat back into them that's a pretty good indication that this may be the last lap under yellow as we get a shot of the Andretti hairpin we see the canopy car is gone and is out of there they've cleaned up the area gotten all the rocks and gravel from the kitty litter out that those rocks are designed to stop a car when it goes off at high speed and that gravel layer is pretty deep and it does a great job of stopping a car slowing it down before it can impact anything but the same token once you're in it you're not going to drive out of it you're sometimes buried up to the hubs so they were able to winch it out backwards with a tow truck and get it out of arms way rocky Moran who's Trenor II Cal Meeker Miller Joel Miller in the 77 car and Mulan in 12 that's your top five yeah Travis angin we saw him earlier today mark Brandon as well Joe rubber lard Eric joiner that's our top 10 once again we've seen the wide variety of machinery that Porsche 962 truly one of the great race cars of all time think about how it dominated so many different series during his era whether it was the 962 C which was the world C cup version of it or whether it was the American Group C version or there was the American version those nine Porsche 962 as well but right now first and third are those Toyota Eagles which not a Dan Gurney shop being driven by juan manuel fangio the second and Parnelli Jones son PJ Jones they've dominated during their period in time when they were racing winning 21 of 27 races the argument could be made that they scared everybody off but I think the reality was that was the end of the prototype era and they were willing to hang on alright time to go green flag racing again at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca that giving a green flag to the Toyota being driven by rocky Moran jr. he goes into the first turn and the question is yep it looks like that second car that Robert Kaufman Toyota is going to squeeze by Spencer Trenor II in the Riley Daytona Prototype coupe and now we have Toyota's one and two here at Laguna Seca followed by treachery in that Daytona Prototype coupe they combined then I believe it's the Porsche 962 might be the spice it's running behind him as they come out of there and there's the Mazda rx-8 prototype they built two of those cars one of them burned to the ground in a fire and that was the only one left I remember he hauls Mert Rove the car when it was new Mazda had a big problem with heat coming off of the inch that car they had all kinds of problems when they were first developing it and in fact they had to build a special exhaust system to try to maintain and contain the heat off of that Mazda prototype so heat was always a huge issue with the Mazda prototype when first came out he was racing mzg TPA [Music] now he's got that Riley in his sights looks to the inside can't quite pull off the pass but he's gonna be close enough to see what the drag race can have what the drag race is like going up the hill nope that Daytona Prototype has the horsepower to stay ahead now it'll be interesting to see what the what the Mazda can do is it tries to reel him in yeah whether we're breaking for the addressee here and you could see flames coming out of the exhaust on that balls on the right side for unburned fuel as he lifts it off the accelerator now he's all over the back of Trenor is they go through the infield he's got the nose of that Mazda tucked up under the Daytona Prototype Swing dives inside as they go under the mother's bridge can't pull it off at the tuck back in behind as a goof through turn five instead uphill right to fall along side as they go up in a six he's gonna make the pass and moved up dropping Spencer Gregory looks like that Mazda is gonna be running in second oh and there that the Riley tries to go to the inside has to lock up the brakes as they head into the corkscrew and the Mazda is able to contain them and keep them behind just a little bit and I think this is where the mods is going to be able to pull out because that Riley had the advantage on the front straightaway in terms of pure horsepower but now on the twisty section the Mazda is kind of eating them up and as they pull onto the front straightaway that Riley is not going to have the ability to pull enough horsepower to get close enough on the front straightaway where you can hear that rotary scream as he goes by in the meantime rocky Moran jr. is motoring off into the distance in the Toyota followed by Kaufman in the other Toyota Cup of American Eagle Toyota GTB cars Miller now in the Mazda car 77 running third treachery in fourth car 15 Meeker in the 29 spice gtp completes at the top 561 car we see on our screens right now being driven by Tom Dooley that's a 1988 Porsche 962 the 962 as I said really one of the great race cars of all time the sports prototype built by Porsche it replaced the nine five six built to comply with instance regulations and just did a great job what amazed me about the nine six chooses their longevity they were competitive for many many years race cars usually can be dominant four to three years but the 962 s were successful for many many years basically a full decade it was introduced in 84 it was still competitive in the night mid 1990s and they kept updates and they built variants of the car as well it was just a dominating car designed by Norbert singer and the Porsche crew and they just did a phenomenal job of building as you mentioned the great job at updating it on the track right now rocky Moran jr. leaving in a 98 1991 aar Ernie Eagle mark three very appropriate rocky Moran jr. of course the son of rocky Moran who was a Toyota driver back in those days we always think about Juan Manuel Fangio the second of PJ Jones rocky Moran was the long-distance guy that was also on that team as well now that Miller in the Mazda has gotten a route runner he stretched that lead out to about five and a half seconds so he's very comfortably in third spot but he's about eight seconds behind the second place Toyota so it looks like it's good to be in Toyota Toyota Mazda spice a rather Daytona Prototype and then Meeker in the spice that's your top five [Music] yeah Mazda came in and said didn't really have the success that they were hoping they were having but I gotta tell you that was a difficult time I mean you had the Nissan program all the money that they would the nominal amount of money that was being thrown into that program you have the Jaguar program which was done so well by Walkinshaw racing they were doing so great then when the Toyotas came the mod that just kind of got sneezed out [Music] promised with that carpet they just ran into some incredibly bad luck over and over again both that's the Pinot's right there yeah being driven by forumula in the 1999 Pinos it gets kind of squirrely coming out of the turn and that gives the ability for traversing and in that 2005 ow d to come up alongside and take the position going into the first turn yeah he doped out inside of him as they got down into the Andretti hairpin and took that position away blew himself up I believe in these 60 spot overall in the process mulan rough through seven and erik joiner and now is all over the back of that pain of Beto's now that p knows when he got squirrely coming on to the front threat front section is really a difficult place to do that because when you want to have your power couple drag race up to the flag and we didn't have that well that's what allowed that car then now he's back in the clutches of Eric Joyner peppy nose is a rather unique car if you look at it the side way the driver looks like he sits way almost over the rear axle it's got a variable and different concepts of mid engines there's fun vintage and derivative instrument engines and what we were traditionally used to seeing in midian racecars it just looked odd but it worked very well oh and that was where the number 18 car that Lola Erik Joyner I think he thought he was gonna try to squeeze up as close as he could on the back of that Thanos and instead what he did was he let the tail in kick out and lost the speed coming into the front straightaway and we've lost Kauffman in the second Toyota he's dropped off the monitor we've got Miller back up in the second spot in the mountain Treasury in the number $18 21st and the Eagle must be having a problem that's unfortunate for that night [Music] I'm just looking at the number 18 Derrick Joyner car just passed James Farrow in 1981 at low 8600 truly one of the most beautiful race cars ever built what a great design a great long tail just had a great we talked about the development now we got a battle on the track between the Pinot's and a lola that's been ongoing and it's hot and heavy there's the Lola almost got alongside the pentose coming out of the corkscrew in there nose to tail coming out of 10 going down into turn 11 the Lola tries to get alongside on the inside can't do it that have to tuck in behind it and follow him up the front straightaway it's gonna be interesting when they get down to turn one if that Lola can stay close enough to try and make a move no it's not going to happen as the paint nose pulls out a considerable gap on acceleration up that front straight weld you Leonard did the last turn better that time the previous thought remember he got out of it with the tail kickin out this time he kept it in line and that gives me the ability to stay just a little bit closer and you'll see if that gives him any kind of an advantage as he continues to go through the rest of his lap being just a little bit closer even though he wasn't able to gain on the front straightaway may help him right here where he's able to reel him in he looks to the inside but doesn't have the position doesn't have the ability to make the move now he's gonna try to go off the back side to see if he can get a little bit closer he looks to the inside it's a drag race up the hill and he just doesn't have the grunting so that the car certainly get out handle of pay those you could see that through that entire infield section but when it comes to power the pay knows has the advantage the Lola can close up get alongside but just can't get far enough ahead to make the move and get around me the corkscrew going down for the backside that 5-story drop we were talking about come on that front straightaway and the goal once again is to make sure that they can be as close as he can not let the rear end kick out so it can be as closely can so as he gets further down the line further into this lap he may be able to take right now we haven't seen a place on the track where that number 18 Lola can reel him in [Music] [Applause] rocky Moran jr. in that number 98 All American racers Toyota gtp car year leader got 17 seconds in hand over Joel Miller in the 92 Mazda rx-7 and 92 v it's plus 77 a FinFET returner a third in that 2006 Riley 11 Daytona car 15 Cal maker in the 87 spice is right behind him in car number 29 mister Trenor e having a pretty good day as well exactly it's interesting also watching the battle on the track right now between Cal maker in that 1987 spice we see it on our screens right now the number and then right behind him was the number 12 carb I should say the number 2 car being driven by Trevis engine in the 2005 out er8 for a while they were battling kind of nose to tail and then they got a little back marker in between them and I think slow Travis down but I think Travis is gonna work really hard to try to reel in that spice and it's interesting looking at the technology again between a 1987 spice gtp car and the 2005 out er8 back up front rocky Moran jr. now it is an 18 second lead that he has built up [Music] so I remember one time being at Sebring and we were doing the live broadcast for ESPN at the time and there was a problem we've got a checkered flag that comes out for Rocky Moran's jr. we'll tell that story at another day because rocky Moran jr. with an 18 second lead is going to win the final race of the morning here at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca following his father's footsteps writhing in the number 98 car here on the Laguna Seca racetrack and our timing and scoring is going to show Robert Kaufman in the 1998 a our Toyota three is coming in second Joel Miller in 1992 Mazda rx-7 92 P Spencer shredder II in the 2006 Riley Daytona Prototype and cowl maker in that 1987 spice gtp rounds out the top five Travis Jenkins scored six in the number to 2005 out er eight LMP followed by Eric Joyner in car 18 2002 BK ten LMP Florent Mulan in car number twelve finishes in eighth that's the 1999 paint nose LMP alright take a quick look at some highlights from this race and once again from the word go rocky Moran led the way but the big problem was Bruce can upon is 962 see the windscreen came off he was able to get off the track before it completely separated from the car but that caused a yellow flag situation for the first couple laps and as a result well we were under yellow once we went racing again Rocky Moran's spirited off into the lead of the race there were plenty of good battles behind them but he just got faster and faster Robert Hoffman wasn't anywhere to be seen but once again great battles all over the track especially this one right here with that number two car driven drivers by Travis Engan the Audi r8 and then the number 18 car Erik Joyner as he was all over the back of this car trying to get ahead of him not quite pull it off but once again rocky Moran jr. in the number 98 Toyota Eagle the winner of the group 7a M sub prototypes
