[Applause] [Applause] the weathertech sports car championship on imsa radio hello everybody and welcome to daytona international speed we're in florida from the hagerty global broadcast booth it's john hindoff and jeremy shaw we've just finished our michelin counts down to green it's been a great warm-up to the great american race down on the grid share adam with president of imsa john doonan we were just remarking how lucky we are to be standing here john before the 60th running of this great race what are your emotions like it's absolutely incredible shay you look at the folks that have joined us here on site at daytona international speedway the grid was a massive crowd camping is full parking is full we got a 61 car grid for the 60th running it's really unbelievable the momentum that our sport has right now super proud of kicking off the 2022 weathertech championship here with the rolex 24 looking for an awesome race uh great competition 35 gt cars 26 prototypes uh it's gonna be one for the ages thank you so much enjoy the race everybody listening and watching enjoy it too it's a phenomenal circuit here 12 corners three and a half miles with the much trickier than it looks in fields here at daytona international with the kink in particular and the west horseshoe actually a number of incidents at the west horseshoe uh over this week because the car the camera just falls away the newly named lemon chicken on the back straight no longer the bus stop a sign of the hands across the water the cooperation between the aco the automobile club to the west and imsa and daytona themselves the aco patrick pierre fion the president of the seo here this weekend they are reciprocating by naming one of the mulsanne straight chicanes the daytona viraj dear torna on that very famous piece of public roads it's a huge crowd the parking on the outside the camping on the outside and of course the hall of the infield absolutely stacked here at d'itona international speedway share adam you just heard from jeremy shaw is in the booth with me andrew marriott this puts me in mind of 10 years ago we had a huge crowd for that we've got a huge crowd and a deep field here andrew marriott for the 60th running of the great american race andrew well lost andrew for the moment oh there you are yeah it's very noisy down here at the moment and uh joe bradley's just joined me he's going to be hopping on to the mic in just a moment looking forward to a great race this is going to be one of the best daytona 24 ever i'd say thank you andrew engines are firing we're moving the mobile stage adam is drinking in the atmosphere a couple of the uh three of the bmw safety cars are going out to do some fast laps with some very important people sheer the atmosphere down there you've been in a lot of pit lanes around the world including le mans the bath is 12 hours this place takes some beating in the half an hour 40 minutes or so before the race starts yes it does johnny said i'm drinking in the atmosphere i think at this stage i'm thoroughly drunk on the atmosphere it's giddy down here there are so many people that were down here on the grid john dunan was showing me a picture you could not see the pit lane and you can barely see the grass and the cars are now rolling so many people up in the grand stands have been waiting for this moment the race engines are fired the michelin tires are being utilized for what they're supposed to and we are about to have 61 race cars out on the 3.56 mile circuit how good does that sound sheer picking up a couple of the the storyline starting in gtd first of all a really close qualifying race a couple of weeks ago and not really that many problems for any of the gtd runners no we had some cars that did not finish that qualifying race whether it was because of an issue that they were more concerned about or an issue that they were just being very precautious about everyone's set to take the start of this race but the other thing i'm hearing particularly from the gtd and gtd pro ratings they're not entirely sure about their setup because the lack of dry running that we've had since the rolex race week began everybody though is in the same boat which is the good news because the gt cars make up well more than half of this field gtd pro makes its debut and it's a really strong field chair a little bit of controver controversy the guys at bmw rll and a corvette had a bop change they're not sure that they deserved that no and that was a bit of a question mark after the roar race because we did see performance from all the cars and i just saw the number 12 lexus rolling very slowly off of the grid gave me a moment of pause frank montecalva team the start of that car professor sullivan um but there were some bop adjustments made and again nobody really knows how they're going to shake out because there hasn't been a lot of drive running there's been one session effectively of dry running and john there's a queue with the pit exit uh something going on further around by the michelin rfid readers we have a prototype it was the number 18 car that spun before the pit exit that's the blue and dark blue prototype jeremy shaw reversed through the rfid uh michelin reader there yeah that would not be a good start to the race to take out uh take out that system uh i i thought for a moment it was the number 10 car yeah but no thankfully for for for the drivers because they would have to face wade taylor when they got back to the pit lane eventually uh but no it's no harm no foul i don't think there's any contact there he's able to as you say reverse through the rfid readers which is not easy in one of these guys i would imagine i wonder if we can use the camera well you're not yes yeah but you know you're not allowed to reverse in the pit lane though are you sorry is that is that good as a bit late so yeah he said heard control he may retake his position will it be a penalty though right that was uh very much behind the wheel by the way i think it just refers to the the uh working pit lane but i don't know we'll see pit lane in is the pit lane speed limit at the end and julie out is at the out which is beyond those rfids yeah uh it's gonna be difficult uh getting out of that pit lane at various times if you're listening to our countdown to green you would have heard chip ganassi saying just let us get out of the pits that would be good in the cold of the night and a couple of the team managers have been seeing that no penalty uh for that dwight merriman prototype lmp2 we're hearing from race control yeah yeah i think i think that's common sense exactly and you know a little bit of a discretion there and that's what one another great thing about the interwear tech sports kind of championship you know that there are rules here but there's also discretion as well uh and that there's no point in giving the guy penalty for that you know we know it's it's difficult to come out of this pit then over the years have been many many drivers have hit that wall on the exit on the sort of that that separates the racetrack from the exit of the pit lane and it's a very tricky corner and it it's always tricky in the wet it's always tricky it's going to be tricky tonight in the cold as well front of the field is packed full of talent here's the starting drivers philippe alberkirk in the number 10 will taylor racing cunningham and although accurate going for an unprecedented hipstery making it will be four race wins here in consecutive years tristan vogtier will start the number five mustang sampling cadillac on the outside of the front row lining up behind them kawai kobayashi world endurance champion of course with toyota back here again with the number 48 cadillac that's the ally car the number 60 acura is on the outside of row number four tom blonkfist is starting for the msr machine the two chip ganassi run cadillac zero one and zero two are positions five and six they have the third rule to themselves it's sebastian boude and er bamba the kiwi back in a prototype and back full time in the imsa weathertech sports car championship this year the seventh of the seven top class cars in dpi making their final appearance of course at the 24 hours of daytona next year it'll be gtp with the lmdh and lmh cars that make their global competitive debut so this is the fun farewell the last hurrah for tpi and people durrani is in that number 31 wheel and cadillac it's ben keating in the winds colored 52 that is on pole position for lmp2 with stephen thomas alongside him in the 11. in lnp three jared andretti for the andretti mortar sports car the number 36 leisure ahead of three to keynes and the outside of the front row is efren castro in the number six car gtd pro what an entry for those but remember the gtd cars whether pro or gtd standard are all running to the same spec to the same b or p so any cars with the green accoutrements on the windshields and the wing end blitz can be just as quick as the cars with the red that's the gtd pro but it is two pro cars on the front of that field marco mapelli will start the lamborghini number 63 for t3 racing and porsche is on the front row with matia jamini the number nine fafcar the first two of the gtd standards russell ward fantastic run in qualifying before the race last weekend in the 100 minute qualifier and the 57 wynwood car has john miller for the mclaren 720s the number 59 car just a quick note about cooper mcneil three cars for weathertech one porsche and two emg gt3s now cooper is entered in the porsche and one of the mercedes he will only score championship points as a full season entrance in the porsche he can win the watch in the other car but he won't take any championship points from that victory if that was to happen 24 hours on the clock welcome to daytona international speedway we start off the 2022 himself weathertech sports car championship with the biggest race of the year it's american sports car racing's super ball to kick off the new season international entries of plenty in the 61 car field the dear torna 24 hours the classic rolex 24 and dear torna is back to its absolute best and we're green and racing for 2022 big jump from the pool sitter philippe alberkirk tristan fortier trying to get back to him now split start so here come the gts with the lamborghini down on the inside the bright yellow unicorn gets a decent start the plaid porsche coming over the top might be a challenge for the lead here by matcha gemini he's got position very cold michelin tires and look what's going on behind in the gt category and at the front of the prototype field it's getting feisty early as they go through the kink down towards the western horseshoe for the first time and the pool sitter has been usurped through into the lead the second place caught on the grid tristan fortier and can we kobayashi mortis pass the paul sitter in a second paul sitter has not even lasted to the end of the infield section before it's down to to third position for philippe alberkirk i think that's a factor of these of the tires and the temperature here because the cadillac has got that big weighty engine on the on the on the rear tyres and it's it's always good off the corners the cadillac and that is the same in slippery conditions as well which we've got right now so uh the cadillac is taking full advantage of that it is tristan vogtier who leads kamui kobayashi in the second position and phillip abaco already down to the third spot at himself if you'd like to get in touch with the sound and vision imps radio.com around the world on rs2 the home of imsa radio and here in the us it's siriusxm202 hello to all of our safety crews who are tuned in on the sirius xm system i genuinely hope we don't have to talk about you and you have a very boring next 24 hours ladies and gentlemen best in the business looking great again for 20 22. opening lap of the race will be led by tristan vortia has been he's gone through so it's cadillac number five big big drafting through the through the try oval as the number 15 amg austin centric driven gt3 for weathertech is under pressure from one of the two lexus there's one in each of the two different categories it's the pro card ben bernicket with frank monte calvo right behind him his teammate and austin sindrick losing one position to the bumblebee colored lexus rcf almost lost two there as he is battling for third position in his class with that number 14 car so that's a position lost the gtd pros have the red mirrors the red sunshade ends and the red rear wing and plate as well as red that door squares on their numbers as well the standard gtt green for all of the above steady start then for the majority of the failed making sure that they get their michelin tyres up to temperature so no huge moment going down to turn one as philippe albuquerque was drafting up behind kami kobayashi the blue and black number 10 acura closing on the multi-colored ally cadillac and he just just about timed his dive out of the slipstream but it was very close indeed coming through the tri oval all of a sudden the aerodynamic advantage he went down low and then had to flick up high to miss the back of that cadillac yeah because kamiroko she jinxed to the left to try and defend that inside line so the accurate had to go to the outside line it's a pretty close moment for this early in the race and kamu kobayashi he doesn't want to give up that position and uh he knew he was under threat there so he made a bit of a late move but uh that was that was you know that was okay and he got away with it and so did philip go who took that evasive action it uh thwarted his attempt to make a pass and now we can try again good nice clean start there that was great to see some of the uh the the lmp2s and threes were a bit messy there i'm not so sure that the number i think it was number 69 g drive racing car john falb he made a tremendous start uh to to to jump ahead of the from what was fifth position in the class more than that one two three four five sixth or seventh in the class to take the lead on that first lap in the kind of six times a fair bit of jockeying for position there not allowed to get out of your line before the start of the race so no no calls on any penalties yet but uh he's pushing a bit hard a bit soon there i reckon already the stream of cars stretching pretty much all the way around the track the leader the number five cadillac coming into the international horseshoe the car at the back of the field he's well they've already gone through one or two stragglers but it's the number 64 who he will come across first ted giovanni's in the porsche 911 gt3 that will be the first car that they come upon in the pit lane sheer adam is down there and a problem early on for the new uh re-engineered to gt3 specification gtd spec number four corvette uh sorry about that john it was a miscommunication core autosport it's coming down absolutely yeah too close yeah all the same no it's the 54 which is an lmp3 contender for the championship year on year they were second in points last year one michelin tire is up on the wall they do have the fuel probe ready to go and actually now that i say that the rear tire changer is ready as well but they definitely have a puncture uh which one is it the air jack goes in they're doing left rear that is where the puncture is they're going to change all four tires this is taking away from their allocation on the week of 31 to begin with well now they're going to be down one more and yeah that tire not looking so great it was the inside shoulder that seemed to come apart for john bennett but they are changing all four and taking advantage of the opportunity to put some more fuel in slower stop has to be said for core auto sport and they will be going back out here soon lord tyre pressures hitting the curbs early on could be doing a bit of damage penalty for the 69 car 69 car for jump shot you called it yeah he went to the outside was passing cars very very early there uh the restarts you can pass as soon as the green flag comes out but not at the start of the race that's john falbe who was driving that car he was he jumped all the way into the lead as i said a little while ago he's now going to give that up again uh and that's one of the things the european i mean john john farb is american and has race over here but the last few years he's been racing primarily in europe that's exactly what we were talking about before the start of the race the european based drivers have got to pay attention the fact the rules are different over here by the way we've just completed lap four faster slapped there on that last night by our race leader tristan voce 134.699 that's only a tenth of a second away john from the lap record which was set by felipe nasa in 2019 and then 34.504 and the lap turned just by by voting it was almost identical to the fastest lap set last year in this race so i talked about the fact they weren't going to be pushing too hard until the last few hours of the race well we'll have to see if he's coming across the line one more time here uh and what is the laptop here is a bit slower he's probably been told hey you don't need to go that fast this early in the race that's jeremy shaw with me john hindhoff in the hagerty global broadcast center good to have your company wherever you are around the world and we have no breaks throughout our coverage audio for all of you and the international tv feed for those that don't have a national broadcaster taking this race live here in the states of course nbc is your first choice for this first hour of the race and lee diffie great to see lee again in person leading in an all-star commentary team for those of you in the states sirius xm two or two if you're moving around and also of course on imsa radio.com rs2 around the circuit as well joe bradley welcome to the pit lane hectic start tire problems already for that court or sport car tire pressures have been a real issue and a subject of of discussion with michelin mandating at the minimum tire pressures not just suggesting them for the top prototype class at least but tyre tactics are gonna be part of our porsche keys to the race joe there's already clues that the teams have got that very much at the forefront of their minds we talking about the tires coming up to not so much temperature but it's getting that optimum pressure in the tire with the heat and before that time comes you've got to be very very careful like the tire's a little bit too squishy if you like and that can cause damage a little bit of attack i'm spotting here on the uh on the pit wall majority of the teams have got their tires in the sun they're just soaking up a little bit of heat to get them just above that ambient that's not going to be there in the night though a second pit stopper already and it comes from the lmp3 class it is the 13 awa machine this car came in did four new michelins they were reaching into the left side brake ducting i guess some debris got stuck in there and a windshield towel as well coming off that car waiting waiting waiting for the time when the 13 can be released and they're going to make sure that there isn't still something there because clearly they're seeing something on the data that perhaps there's a bit of an overheating going on which is a bit ironic on a cold day like this don't be fooled by the sunshine here it is very chilly out there and jeremy shaw for the leaders and therefore therefore for everyone else now the traffic has started the lead car has got to ted giovanni yeah on lap on the right at the end of lap six he caught the the tail very tail enders and now he's catching up with the main pack in gtd which is large and so he's going to now work his way through the gtd cars uh keep to the left-hand side on the banking the the pro the faster cars go around the outside that's the uh that's the way things should be here and as i say they're working their way through this field now and uh first time they've done it in this race yeah it's always tricky the the lap time last time around was 138.69 for our race leader tristan vogtier that's four seconds slower than his previous lap just also a note here number 60 car uh has fallen it's slipped back at several positions now it started in the fourth place it's been passed by all of the other three cadillac so it's now back to seventh in the class that's tom blumquist again just taking it early taking it easy in the early stage of the race he doesn't want to extend anything at all this is his first race time at the rolex 24 day tournament he was supposed to do this race back in 2019 but unfortunately a visa issue uh prevented him from making a trip so this finally is tom blumquist's debut in this race and he is loving the atmosphere so far adam to get that awa alicia back out on the racetrack for the lmp3 category they had to give it a bit of a push start so clearly once they had finished the pit stop the car was not willing to leave again on its own you sure adam early problems i suppose if you're going to have problems early try and get them fixed get back without losing too many laps and you've got a half a chance of of things carrying on still haven't had the drive through penalty for the leading yeah yes we have just had it yesterday sorry i'll say that last time right came in on lap six thank you jeremy and here come the leaders working their way through got three cars now pretty much knows to tell for the leading the race to go around the outside of a slower gtd car into turn one so it's now was that communicably of the race this time i missed that where is he so yeah okay come here kobe actually we got okay i was watching the next group of three cars camus had already gone so camille kobayashi in that ally cadillac caliber 48th into the lead of this race taking advantage of some traffic there and already now he's a couple of seconds clearer vote here but again traffic giveth and traffic taketh away down to the far end of the infield for us he's got a mixture i think he had three different categories of cars there coming through behind him tristan fortier in the black and gold dpi to think that this is the last time we'll see dpis in their current form at this great rolex 24 hours of daytona hope you're settling in wherever you are in the world what is it coming up to seven o'clock in the uk eight o'clock in europe got your favorite snacks and beverages at himself if you'd like to get in touch with us here at the hagerty global broadcaster booth all the way through till tomorrow afternoon and then we'll have michelin post race tech to break this down pit lane speed violation so well there's hardly been anybody in the pit lane so that must have been one of the early callers and it was indeed the number 13 that went through so that'll be another drive-through come come back and try that again would you like to if that's okay so who was who was in that when it came through the pit lane it was already for dhani in the duquesne number 30. so john bennett and ori fedoni came in early in the court and the the wwe cut so how did can we get to the lead all right it was the turn one shuffle you take the high road cam we took the lord had to do it twice in fact as he carved his way past the carbon past the uh lamborghini yeah what's the car what's the car yeah yeah yeah switching from audi to lamborghini over the winter that uh carbine with peregrine racing team well everybody's got a strong lineup driver lineup year but it's jeff westfall uh who's a regular with that uh that team uh robert mcginnis is switching over from a lexus he's driven uh previously last season and then two lamborghini release semi-factory drivers sandy mitchell from four far in scotland and corey lewis from nazareth pennsylvania uh cory lewis of course had a lot of success here particularly with the paul miller paul miller racing team when they ran lamborghini is that team not here this weekend because they've they are switching to new bmw m4 gt3 for this season but there isn't a car available for them until sebring paul miller is in the pilot actually i saw him yesterday briefly so he's here sorting up the atmosphere talking to the representatives of bmw final race of ours head of bmw motorsport and bmw m for mike crack as well mike a great supporter of endurance racing and good friends to us here at imsa radio and radio show limited mike we wish you all the best in the new appointment for aston martin cognizant f1 our loss is undoubtedly there again all the best for the new challenge 50 years of bmw m as well this year 50 half a half a century they've been turning out those great tuned streets and competition cars we've got a new leader in gtd uh gtd overall is now the the non-pro car john miller in that crucial motorsport mclaren caliber 59 is in the lead of the race in d he's ahead of five pro cars next up they're separated by lance wilsey in a in a uh an lmp3 car it's kind of a 33 the sean creech motorsports legie then second well first second third fourth and fifth in gtd pro behind john miller are matthew jamine in the porsche ben barnacult and alexis marco mapelli in a lamborghini and austin cindrick in the mercedes to all different manufacturers there so we've got five different manufacturers in the top six positions overall in gtd and then the second of the porsches is julian and lauer that's the number 79 weathertech car [Music] so we've almost completed 20 minutes fast motorsport coming to the line now and goes across it and down towards turn one being pursued that porsche by the lexus of ben barnicott that is a great looking gt d pro field and the gtd plus have cycled through the majority of the gtd's that they were behind except for john miller in that number 59 mclaren jeremy that has uh pulled ahead for crucial motorsports great looking car and it's gone well oh i certainly has and the second of the mclarens that's the number 70 car for inception rating that's second in gtd pro seventh fastest kind of overall if you like uh he's in between the porsche julian and lauer and ross gunn in the heart of racing team aston martin economy 23 who's next up that is a pro car and then three non-pro cars behind him that's the two mercedes of russell ward economy 57 for windward racing daniel morad the number 28 for allegra motorsports florida-based team and then frankie montecalvo another non-pro car that's the number 12 for vassa sullivan the lexus and all of those cars by the way are our nose to tail [Music] so starting to hope i'm sure the teams that we're getting into this rhythm lap times have stabilized a little bit round about 135 in traffic at the front of the field yeah that's about right i agree and uh there has been a change however for third position now we're now cadillac one two three because uh a couple of laps ago uh sebastian bourdain in the number zero one for cadillac racing also known as chip ganassi racing they changed the team name this season ahead of the pole sitter philip albuquerque so that uh konikam and altercar caliber 10 the accurate now down in fourth position and that uh kamir kobayashi is almost three seconds clear of that little trio of voce bourdain and albuquerque then there's about three seconds back to the second the ganassi cars that's all bamba just out of people durrani and then tom bloomquist [Music] so in the other classes in lmp2 it's the two pr1 matheson motorsports cars that started first and second they were jumped by john foul but the start bringing his no of course now a long long way well yeah a long long way back i mean well she's not a long long way back uh he's only about 40 seconds back which is about what you lose with a drive-through penalty here just driving through the pit lady lose about 40 seconds so john john falb is uh ninth in l p two uh is about 30 seconds actually only behind ben keating who leads from stephen thomas third place is eric lux in number 81 dragon speed usa entry he has managed to find a way past francois erio in the number 68 car that's the second of the g drive racing with al grav pro uh allograft pro racing good morning to those of you in australasia in the antiquities six o'clock in parts of australia certainly where jesse young is great start to the race so far can we with ballistic pace hello to those of you tuned in on sky sports new zealand taking the great race as well from here and when i see the great american race i am quoting directly from what's been mourning the grass in front of us which we normally don't see here but uh i can't imagine they've done that this far out for the 500 maybe they have grassroots motorsport at its best you could taper potentially at him the radio if you'd like to get in touch traffic now if i look at my my track yet pretty much spread out all the way around the track there's a gap from the new le monde chicane newly renamed in a reciprocal agreement of cooperation between imsec daytona and the ac on le mans so the le mans chicane now the back stretch again and uh one of the chickens on the mulsanne straight will be named the daytona viraj jeremy change of her position behind kami kobayashi yeah sebastian bourdain moving ahead of tristan voce those two shared the car last season the number five that voce is driving now but bourdain back with the chip gennady team with whom he drove in the ford gt in gtlm a few years ago and uh relishing that opportunity of course in that number zero one car and he's up into second position and uh already he's beginning to close in just a little bit on kubrick kobayashi in the ally cadillac caliber 48 the gap between those two two seconds right now uh blur fiends who's sitting right in front of us here in the hagerty global broadcast booth jeremy just asking when we might see teams coming down pit lane for their standard stops well we we did find out quite a bit of useful information in the 100 minute qualify it last weekend at the raw before the rolex 24 because one or two teams got caught out with with fuel mileage at the in the dpis at least yeah and i was talking to mike shank about that uh and the act the two accurate teams number 16 and a 10 they got together before the start of the race and decided to sort of split their strategies it's a 100 minute race they're working together those two teams which i thought was really interesting and mike shanks was you know there was a choice of pitting early or late and mike shanks said look it's 100 minute races 61 cars there's going to be cautions yeah i'll go for the early stop well that didn't work out because there were no cautions so they had to make an extra stop at the end of the race really interesting i thought they worked together that way side-by-side action on the high banks second and third under dispute with the gtd pros lamborghini inside going into the new le mans chicane will just about hold and he's gone through i thought he was gonna have to hold back there but the very light green marco mapelli driven tr3 lamborghini goes ahead of the lexus of ben barnacult so that's a change for second in gtd pro and whilst that was going on mattia jamini has gone to the front of gtd overall he's caught and passed john miller and put about a second and a half into the mclaren so it is the nine-faff porsche and matias machiavelli jam jam as he's known to the other porsche drivers who is ahead of john miller we just call him mr miller second in gtd is a little bit further down it's uh another one of the mclarens actually it's the frederick shandolf machine the number 70. yes but they're all in the trade all of those cars are all in the train so yes uh you know he's what four there's four cars in between himself and john miller in the other mclaren mclaren one two as i say at gtd but uh if those four pro cars and the two non-pro cars are all absolutely together and yeah the train behind that it's all super tight great fun i wonder if we're already seeing some planning uh bmw issues share adam spotted something last time around for one of the rear hall let them and lanigan cars he still hasn't he still hasn't pitted but marco vittman with some serious back end damage going through turn one i noticed that the back of that car was pushed in quite a bit now it could have been an optical illusion i'm kind of hoping it was i haven't seen the car come back around since but that would be a terrible way for bobby rahel's organization to start this race yeah well they weren't very happy at the uh the blp changes nobody is when they're feeling changed the the weight on the car wasn't it uh for those cars yeah they got a bit of a they got a bit of a bit of a breakout after the first race just look at lmp2 and a battleground no it's added 10 kilos to the pace yeah yeah and they took it yeah they took some rear wing angle off the cars yeah which is causing them a lot of problems apparently yeah yeah the the optimal oh down the inside on the tri oval for the 79 emg gt3 that is battling for well gtd honest let's just say that uh ted giovanni's just getting lapped by his uh class cars as they go through down into the international horseshoe this is the battle and the 75 uh kenny a bull car is in that mix as well that's julian uh that is where is that 75 car 75 car yeah where is that car oh so that's getting lapped as well by kenny aboard okay that's fine that makes sense ninth in gtd yeah so he certainly slipped back some after a stellar run in the the qualifying race and qualifying itself in tricky conditions were qualifying so of course this is uh this is super tight in there the battle number for the lead now in lmp2 stephen thomas uh having fallen uh what about four seconds behind his teammate ben keating has now closed right up again those two were absolutely nose to tails they came across the line to complete their 16th lap and they've pulled out about nine seconds then they go because now into turn one uh they are absolutely tied together the 52 and number 11 car they're about 10 seconds ahead of eric lux who's up into third position now for dragon speed usa ahead of the uh the uh high-class racing caliber 20 that's dennis anderson and uh the but the uh overall is still the commercial actually just from as they work their way through a whole lot of gtd cars here into turn one it's still kamoko but he actually dives down the inside of a couple of cars and goes to the outside in turn one uh still holding off for sebastian all day but now tristan voces closed right in again there's a five second gap back to fill out philip albacore bamba and people durrani tom blumquist he's really taking it cautiously in his early stages he's another five seconds back in seventh place 12 seconds over off the overall lead but again no concerns at this stage just keep it clean particularly for someone like tom blonkist this is his first experience of this many cars in a dpi car and at daytona so you know the last thing it the only thing he wants to do is bring that car in for the first pit stop in one piece completely undamaged kobayashi in the thick of traffic going back onto the high banks we've had half an hour of racing and it is the 48 ali cadillac allied cadillac that leads the race from sebastian bourget just seven tenths of a second away in the zero one cadillac then it's the five mustang sampling tristan vortier about another second another two tenths of a second further back top three then separated by just on one second and you were asked a few minutes ago where do you when would you expect the first round of pit stops and and i would say probably probably yeah four or five maybe another couple or three laps from now we will who's is coming in right now is that uh our race leader it is yes later into the pit lane then so there's your answer yeah i think this will be a bit early for the first pit stop absolutely george bradley is at pitt in and watches can we call be happy could come he could be actually come to a halt well we've got quite a busy feeling and all of a sudden the number ten cutting of another comes in and tries to round kobayashi's car that's further down the pit lift for me looking pretty standard but pretty much everybody in the dpi field getting ready i'm right here near the o-1 cadillac pit and they're about to come in also so it's going to get very busy down here but all very standard so that was fuelling tires for the allied car joe was it fueling tyres on the allied car fuel and tires on the konig and minolta car and they've got tires ready for the one here [Music] it was fuel only for the 69 g drive uh what's normally an hour so here it is nice burn up by john faub although the tires he was going back out on were the tires he had been out on tracks there should be no issue with heat in those ones whatsoever two more lmp2s coming down the pit lane but they're going to jose uh i've got the 52 and the number 11 in just gone beyond me i'm just gonna have a look down the pit lane to see if we are gonna take on tires on that car is the the pr madison motorsport doing very well just hanging in there behind the 52 which has been leading the class both in the pr madison team and leading a team one two with the front of the lmp2 field and here come the rest of the lmp2 field and here comes the one cadillac let's see if i'm right they've got the tires ready for the your one yeah it's going to be tires and fuel driver staying put bit further down a little bit further down we have dragon speed in this is the car visible from space it is fuel only for eric lux staying by will of this car just waiting on the fuel another pit box back behind them the 29 racing team ventureland that's the bimbo sponsored car it will be new tires for prince van eer as he is staying behind the wheel and waiting on the feeling to finish that was the sound of eric lux going back out on the track but the pr1 matheson cars are gone well we are just over half an hour into this race jeremy shaw and the pace has been absolutely outstanding it's sunny but it's not not warm at all but the fastest lap of the race has already raised some eyebrows yeah it was set on lap five of the race sebastian bordeaux 134.479 that was uh while he was chasing after those those those leading cars uh and it got and uh 134.479 the old lap record at 134.504 that was set back in 2019. yeah great conditions right now for fast lap times i mean the sun is out the track is real it's fairly warm it might not be a huge uh ambient temperature which is which is good i mean conditions are good right now for a ripe for good lap times but uh already then you faster slap new rap record for board a massive disparity in the track temperature which has had sun on it since the sun came up at seven o'clock this morning and uh track temperature and air temperature air temperature in fahrenheit is a chilly 46 degrees fahrenheit 88 fahrenheit on the track jeremy so cool air going into the engines fat air as the drag races used to call it that'll help with the power delivery uh and warmth on the track that's going to change markedly when the sun goes down at round about six o'clock this evening sunset officially six o'clock and it gets dark pretty quickly after that sunrise 7 14 in the morning do the arithmetic 13 hours and 14 minutes between those two times just by three minutes the second longest amount of time between sunset and sunrise that we of any race that we cover here on the radio shulam in a network of channels bahrain and the 24 hours a couple of weeks ago was three minutes longer on that particular measurement uh not battling sorry dubai and the 24 hours a couple of weeks ago kobayashi then with the new set of michelin tires the 38 sets i think here wasn't it that were allocated to the dpis and that was helped by the fact that we had some wet running it didn't help oh touch for the leader there passing traffic and a big sideways moment coming out of the international horseshoe for kamui kobayashi that would have woken up the japanese driver if he wasn't already alert those little moments our countdown to green to and the porsche keys to the race just talking about the concentration levels needed in traffic and almost the two chip ganassi cadillacs coming together in third and fourth position as they go through undo speedway turn one and sitting right in behind them there that will be philippe alba kirk who started on pole position so second third and fourth at fourth fifth and sixth rather absolutely together what's happened with the two so vortice actually got past porter i think in all of that because at one stage in fact has [Music] i think 40 years got through because i thought i saw the two chip ganassi cars nose to tail in third and fourth yeah what happened there [Music] there goes uh kobayashi yeah there goes voce up into second place then little bamba inserts so sebastian bourdain gone from second to fourth and looking further back down the order tom blonkis has lost a lot of ground uh he came into the pit it's only about five seconds behind number 31 car last time around he was 22 seconds behind him so i don't know where he stalled it i had a problem with outlap or there was a problem in the pit stops with number 60 car it's uh a long way back i mean no drama it was a it was finger trouble a lost wheel nuts on that was it joe bradley just telling me no no no no it's fine he's just told me as you couldn't have you couldn't have heard that so kobayashi then after a little moment last time around is mortaring forward just have a quick look at the rear end of that ally cadillac don't think he's got any damage to the side planes or the underbody the little cheese wedges behind the back wheels are so important to the aerodynamic efficiency they are both there and it looks like the underbody it was the slightest tap to the rear and it kicked the car sideways [Music] so first pit stops at the front of the field for the prototypes in p1 and p2 all completed yet to see the lmp3 cars and the gtd's to come into the pit lane live from the world center of racing daytona international speedway florida under blue skies but chilly conditions track temperature is great air temperature chilly if you're out there but lovely for the internal combustion engines it's a 60th running of the rolex 24 hours at daytona hagerty global broadcast booth with jeremy shaw and john hindorf and it shared adam and joe bradley for the first part of the race down in the pit lane andrew marriott was with us for our mission countdown to green and we'll be back later on and other voices that you'll hear through our uninterrupted broadcast [Music] johnny palmer and bruce jones and peter mckay making his rolex 24 debut 40 minutes about to be ticked over just looking at the the two corvettes uh running in the eighth and ninth positions uh are in gtd pro and you know pretty much in in the game there i mean the not far behind the class leader within 12 seconds of the class leader with uh 21 laps in the books already we saw those cars you know not showing an awful lot of pace last weekend or through any of the practice sessions uh but uh yeah they're certainly running where they would uh would like to be running i think at this stage in a race uh not far off the pace right in contention 23 laps completed by kumu kobayashi and all of a sudden now he stretched that lead out again to uh three and a half well two and a half three and a half seconds it was last time across the line over tristan vogtier up into second place and then the two gadassi cars with little bamba now ahead of uh sebastian bourdain [Music] two gtd categories for the first time in the 24 hours here [Music] red number panels for the pros that those are factory-ended cars but they're exactly the same in specification and balance and performance as the green number panels on the standard gts so gtd and gtd pro for this year and if you missed the big announcement earlier on this week that category has tempted ford back into imsa weathertech sports car championship racing with a new version of the ford mustang gt4 of course we're used to seeing in the mission pilot challenge that's going to get an update next year and by 2024 we'll have the blue orville back in gtd in gtd pro with the works team and in gt d standard for customer cars that announcement coming earlier on this week and in our mission countdown to green adam catching up with uh laura wanted klausner who's program manager of corvette and cadillac racing so chevrolet and cadillac racing and she absolutely delighted that we're gonna revive the old muscle car poorly car wars and promised that there will be a bespoke gt3 corvette by 2024 that's an announcement that came a little while ago but worth reminding everybody about that in fairness as she has just said to me she didn't actually say it would be a cool vet so it could be a camaro or something else we've seen the gt3 cadillacs in the packs of course with cts vs and such like we know that cadillac are going on into what will be gtp here next year taking the lmdh route into the new gtp category time a big change here in imsa but change that is built on success and the stability that the last few years have brought to north american sports car racing [Music] could have easily been that this year would be would have been a a holding pattern yeah far from it teams getting experience for the new regulations getting ready for new challenges in 2023 when the lmh lmd8 cars rather will make their competition debut here at this race [Music] connoisseur through the traffic is under pressure from people durrani people in the 31 wheel and red white car going through turn one now onto the infield with the mclaren just ahead of them it's the inception cars they go down to the international horseshoe people tries the wider entry that was really smart driving from people to ronnie got on the power of weeper early might get a run on the black and blue car ahead of him but wasn't quite close enough as they go through the kinky falls back into line next up frederick shondorf in the lexus and ahead of that the other mclaren that's john miller in the copper-colored card it's one either side people gerrardi tries to go for the position it's fifth he's trying to take big bump on the inside of six that i haven't really noticed when you are tight to that uh curbing there and that was an uncomfortable ride for the number 10 of philippe alberkirk durrani cuts through traffic and tries to get into the draft going down to the le mans chicane on the back straight getting close but not close enough with more traffic ahead of them these two feisty competitors on the speedways turns at three and four at the moment if anything i'd say alba kirk has just pulled out a wee bit as we click over 45 minutes completed they complete another lap underneath us the race leader is already heading towards the international horseshoe dive down the inside at turn one [Music] that's uh sebastian bourget looking at the back the very dark red hind quarters of old bamba zero two cadillac both run by chip gadassi yeah certainly interesting isn't it after that first round that's pretty yeah that's pretty serious stuff that's going on here yeah between teammates yeah yeah bourdain particularly he's been very aggressive in the early stages of this races he who has set a new lap record in this race already uh and uh he got sort of shuffled around in the traffic right after having worked his way up to as high as second excuse me as high second place and right behind the leader before the first round of pit stops now though is back to a fourth and camus could be actually extending that lead out front already now over six seconds that ally cadillac leads that's a nice little buffer at this stage for tristan over tristan vogtier in second place ben keating and stephen thomas still lead in the lmp2 category and the second of those cars stephen thomas has just been lapped for the first time by the overall race leader he's about seven seconds behind his teammate eric lux is about 20 seconds back in the in the third position in carnival 81 that's for dragon speed usa and then behind him are the number 68 car francois aerio dennis anderson in the high class racing calendar 20 and then up into six now john falb in that number 69 g drive with apr that is the car that served the drive-through penalty early on in this race it's just running through [Music] another lap then a lot of questions coming in it's been a bit hectic here as you can imagine so let's try and catch up with a few of your notes to us here at himself radio hello to sean with a great set up that he's just tweaked it some pictures of at himself radio tom dave is asking what the tire stints going to be like for each class with the cold weather it's a very good question uh the michelin tyre engineers that uh have been scratching their heads about that and trying to [Music] trying to work that one out themselves they simply don't have the data for the kind of temperatures oh huge incident this is the era motorsports prototype it's down at turn six coming back on two just before the apex of turn six full course yellow is out immediately with uh 23 hours and 12 minutes to go that car has nosed into the wall fairly comprehensively now is there another car involved in that there's damage severe damage to the front of that car and debris right next to the marshals post i think well it looks like the wheels are still pointing the right direction but the front body work at least has been torn off remarkably it seems that it it isn't too badly this is dwight merriman who spun on the outlap come on andrew we've got an incident spun on the outlap and had to reverse out of the pit lane now can he get that car mobile again we've got the safety truck one of the ems if yes he can he can there's a one of the marshals trying to stop him from moving it he was in okay he lost it behind another prototype so that's interesting what was going on there did he just lose concentration and over brick or did he get too close to the back of the car ahead of him but there's some body work underneath the right front wheel all right let's uh pick up a couple of reports from the pit lane start with bmw and the number 24 car that had problems with ria damage earlier on joe bradley what's the score well 24k main took on fuel and ties and now that number 24 team rll bmw it's gone behind the wall the engine was ticking over so i'm gonna have to find out what that problem is for that 24 bmw andrew murray it's joining us in the pit lane for an update yeah another bmw storage on the 96 turner motorsport bmw was in the pits when the full course yellow came out so i think that's probably a disadvantage for him but it's early days of course so the clear-up begins for this first full course yellow jeremy yeah we're gonna pits are gonna get busy you know in a moment the gtd car the gt cars haven't yet made their first pit stop but everybody will be in once the pits are open so for those of you not familiar with the the way things work here in imsa the uh safety car is called the full course caution it's called the safety car gets out on the racetrack it picks up the overall race leader then any cars that are in between the safety car and each of the class leaders can cycle past any other cars that are ahead of them past the safety car and go back around to catch up at the back of the field that is what is happening right now so these are all cars that uh in their respective classes had not been lapped by their respective class leaders once they've all caught up the pits will be opened initially the prototype cars can come onto the pit lane then the following have an opportunity to go onto the pit lane if they so desire and it'll be pretty busy and then the following lap all the gt cars can come in and make pit stops i was trying to answer a question from tom davis on atoms of radio about the tires the michigan tire engineer is just saying they simply don't have data for the kind of of cold temperatures sub-zero temperatures that have been on some of the forecasts so there's a little bit of a move into the uh into the into the unknown however they've been working very hard with the teams because you know it's michelin it's what you would expect so we'll have to discover that i think as we go along um whether it helps to eyewear or not well that's splitting opinion isn't it if the car is moving around more because it's not got any mechanical grip that tends to take life out of the surface of the tire rather than if it was stuck to the ground with the tyres at full operating temperature and pressure and that pressure side of it is so important because you're more likely to damage the wall or the shoulder of a tyre if you are running lower pressures because you can't get them up to temperature because you can't get to the heat of them it's a it's a vicious circle literally for tyres at that point the number 24 bmw was a loose uh body panel at the back uh shade mentioned that they had damage at the back it looked like the bootleg the trunk lid was popping up like an air brake thanks to abe was the active on others who've tweeted in and told us that hello to steve griffna at daytona a house divided my dad tried to raise me as a corvette fan from the moment i came home from the hospital somewhere along the way i went to the dark side and became a ferrari fund what do you that could be problematical really could be uh later on steve and your dad thanks for tuning in to himself radio on imsa tv good to have uh your company turner motorsport tweeting p29 not to p2 not p9 29th position robbie foley just doing what he can but they're getting ready for tackles anyway they've just trained the black bees from their black beans from their 24 hours soap so that's uh good news for the food side of turner motorsport they do like their tacos at himself radio yeah very quick note to john d i think he was number 38 car came into play yes it did it was running in the top five or so yeah thinking lmp3 the pits had not yet opened but the lmp3 cars were getting very close to their range on needing requiring fuel too close for the 38 cars so they came onto the pit load the pit lane is closed this is what it is called emergency service they're allowed to take on a few seconds of fuel then they go out rejoin the back of the pack and then when everybody else comes in they come in again take on full service so there's sort of a a slight penalty there and it takes them to the back of the pack which is unfortunate but it's not completely influenced not going to run out of fuel which is the other alternative if they if they'd stayed out you don't want to take that risk particularly this early in the race they're very unlucky because the pit lane is opening for the prototypes right now it should be next lap for all the gt's the 98 aston martin as well the uh amr northeast car came in to the pit lane as well and here come all of the prototypes uh joe bradley is opinion and we'll see the leader yeah we'll try and keep an eye to see if anybody's going to choose this full caution period to change drivers i'm at the i can see that the number 60 the uh shank racing car that lost a lot of time in the previous pit stop we had an errant wheel not that flew off into the very well manicured lawn on the try over here and that caused the team mustang sampling car is out pretty much everybody's staying from what i saw there guys they've changed tyres but kept the drivers in now that means that those tires have already done one stint there now i'm with the two uh front runners in there too uh the 1978 g drive car the 81 dragon speed right down by me and they are also putting on fresh tyres and fueling it up and indeed more of the olympics who's coming past me but i think it might be the 81 coming up unbelievable out here there's very nearly a collision on pit lane yeah i'd further up the pit lane the racy that i think was the reecy ferrari that was getting emergency service it it's also a traffic jam in the exit lane because the exit light was to red so kobe actually couldn't leave and so now everybody is in a very close area very close contact as they go out through the rfid reader and back onto the track so tight here only 20 feet for each of the pit boxes this weekend with the full complement of 19 of 61 cars in this pit stop the kennya bull sun energy one mercedes also entering a close piece it was the 62 that i saw embroiled there and the problem with that jeremy is that himself designed the pit boxes so that in full course yellows it's normally the it's a gt car then a prototype a gt car then a prototype and when gtd's coming out of out of kilter as it were for emergency service then that just stacks everything up but there's no room and that's exactly what happened there with that stop so for em emergency service there are particular rules theresa ferrari was at an angle the winds 52 prototype couldn't get out even though it was an angle and the second place number 11 lmp2 that was also in there the stephen thomas cart machine also had to wait and we're seeing the dolly jacks used these are the the jacks with the little caster wheels on that go underneath the hydraulic jacks and then the car drops back under them we're seeing those being employed in standard pit stops i'm not sure that's the that's the greatest tactic but i don't know what anybody else can do no i mean that's i mean you know that's that's a functional effect that pits are tight here it's something that the teams have realized is going to be more of a problem that it has been for many many years here so that's something they have planned for and practiced during this week and over last weekend as well when it became apparent that it was super tight down there this time around there we'll see all the gtd cars into the pits because they have not none of them have yet had a scheduled stop a couple have been in for a couple of different reasons but they should have been able to make it this far uh okay and now this is going to get busy now for gtd cars so it's going to be the number nine faf motorsports porsche the team that won at last year's gtd championship moving into the pro category this year factory driver matthew jamine brings that number nine car onto the pit lane here we go again joe bradley gets the first of pity what a sight that was that train of gt cars streaming into the pillion i'm dropped between the three and four corvette and the 23 heart of racing aston martin uh tight number three but just off the jacks now fuel still going in that's the yellow one the number four is the silver one meanwhile to my right just coming to the end of their pit stops now the great side great news is the fueling's taken longer than the titanic [Music] i'm down at the number 28 currently uh third in the gtt and he lands now with that uh mercedes-benz couple of lamborghinis down here just coming in very hectic indeed and also i've just seen the 39 lamborghini that is still held in the pits they're still fueling that one now that comes off the jacks now and that car goes off and a great plume of tyre smoke in the wec you get penalized if you leave smokers you spin the wheels to leave the tires i leave the pits in this championship and get a round of applause extra championship points i think to be honest uh for that if it isn't it maybe should be and we've been looking at that for the future thanks gentlemen uh please be careful down in the pit lane very hectic even when only half the field is coming in at any one time and pit crews having to have their wits about them and their heads on stalks to see what is going on after all of that with our first full course yellow caused by dwight merriman it looks like kami kobayashi has held the lead for the number 48 ally cadillac the gts that came in being the gt ferrari the number 62 car for reese's competition and the 75. now they entered a closed pit jeremy so they could only take i think uh emergency service now i've just had a good look through the binoculars at the 75 car i i think they may have new tires on that so they might actually get a straight a more stringent penalty uh on that but if you do need fuel and some of those cars would have needed fuel we talked about the lmp threes particularly that's allowed for you come in you take a short amount of fuel five seconds and then what happens after that because clearly um you're not gonna be able to carry on very much longer what's the any other sanction that goes on for entering the clause pit for emergency service yeah you have to come in again and serve another serve another uh make on take on your full service so that takes you to the back of of the pack but back of you it was the class cars that are on the same lap at least final wave buy is ongoing at the moment and again that is once the pit stops have taken place if then there are any cars in between the safety car and the class leader then they can go past everybody else and take up position at the back of the field if they can catch the back of the field and that is what gives teams an opportunity not to come in with everybody else in their class if your lap down and you don't come in with everybody else if you stay out you're going to go past all of those cars that are coming into the pit lane you're then going to be behind the safety car and ahead of the class leaders before we go back to green that is what is happening right now the cars can then go past take out the position at the back of the field i think it's a great rule it gives you an opportunity if you've had a problem for whatever reason it might be to to get a lap back and get yourself back in the race 22 hours 56 and a half minutes still to run our first full course yellow and here are the cars that had their emergency services coming back in along pit lane and they have a red light at the end of pit lane at the moment so they have to pause just well they've just driven through so not sure what that was about there because as jeremy was explaining and there's about five cars that have just driven straight through the legion of dan goldberg the aston martin vantage of paul dalalana the 98 the lamborghini era can of cour corey lewis the 39 the 75 mercedes the ferrari in gtd pro of reecy the 62 and the number 21 ferrari louis perez compact the af courser gt d car all driving straight through and more cars coming in now but this time going back to their pit stalls to do their service now that's more in keeping with what i was expecting to see we'll keep an eye on that write those numbers down that i've just mentioned because uh there may be sanction for those cars in a moment or two the dpis are going to the front of the field yeah they get a clean restaurant and that's the other procedure that takes place before the reset once the pit stops are completed the prototype cars the quickest cars on the racetrack will move past the gtd cars there will be no reset amongst the gtd so if there's non-pro cars ahead of pro cars that's fine uh but the prototype cars will reset themselves and talking of gtd that somehow till bechtelsheim at number 66 gradient racing car that was running somewhere down the pack has emerged in the lead of gtd overall that's i don't know how he manages that coming back the green this time i think just see if i can see the safety car pulling away no it's still sitting there joe bradley time for well i was talking about the uh sao paulo colored bmw at the front of the field our safety car can't miss that one in the car park it hasn't pulled away it gives us a chance to talk about one of the rll cars in the race already one of their cars behind the wall yeah uh more character building moments for the bmw team with the 25 the sister car now in and they've had the rear tree which is of course the the ground effect diffuser at the back that's where they're going to get some rear end grip from completely damaged it looked like to me as though it may be a little bit of an excessive use of curbing and it smashed the rear under tree coming at the end of this pit stop just fitting a new one [Music] the good news is see if i get the right buttons to press um they're not losing as much time as if we were under full race conditions of course with the field circulating in about three and a half minutes rather than the minute and a half that the front of the field are normally doing so that is at least a little bit of a help it's waiting for the field to pack up i think but as joel mentioned some quite extensive work going on to the back of that number 25 car this is the red black and off-white car and the sister car behind the wall with uh damage also to the rear end and with the bootleg the trunk lid flapping on that car when it came in now it's not just about the body work there because there's all kinds of things under the back uh oil coolers sometimes relocated to there maybe even drive belts off the rear axle to power things like alternators so they'll be having a good look at that and if it's had enough of a thump to take off the diffuser or damage the floor there they'll also be looking at the suspension components as well the other car that is still in pit lane [Music] is at pit out and that is the team tgm porsche the 64 car which is sitting having had well having had tires and on fuel but it's not yet moving mention early on oh and trinkler brilliant drive yesterday at the second in the michigan pilot challenge absolutely gave his all for that i needed a bit of rehydration from the medics after a mammoth three hours 20 minutes stint out of the four oh hope you're feeling well jen i know you are looking after him as well i hope all is well and that you're feeling top notch by the time you get home to nashville so coming down to 22 hours and 50 minutes to go so an hour and 10 minutes of the 2022 imsa weathertech sports car championship season opener has been completed it's the 60th running of the rolex 24 hours of daytona can we kobayashi warming his michelin tires as much as he can by but a left and right weaving not allowed to be breaking and accelerating the field now effectively under his control as the bmw safety car is already back in the pit lane that's one of the new m4s in that a very distinctive sao paulo colour celebrating 50 glorious years of bmw m performance green flag is in the air kobayashi across the line now and down towards turn one he's got a really good jump there all of the interest is behind him is the zero one cadillac tries to go past the number 10 acura the black and blue car on the outside look like it may have lost the position there no it's just about held onto it down to the international horseshoe goes wide waiting for the cut back also in there people tirani and the red and white number 31 ling michelin rubber on the exit of that corner kobayashi with a couple of cars lengths maybe back to tristan fortier in the mustang sampling cadillac [Music] then the battle for third and its eyes on the mirrors for albuquerque as he goes down to turn six steered right in the middle of the road there's drifted a little bit a little bit wide maybe a cast length wide out to turn six and here comes that zero one cadillac with sebastian porter he's in the draft the acura is on the low side hugging the yellow lines they'll straighten out and head down towards the newly named lemon chicken yeah once again yeah the traction of the cadillac is definitely superior to the accuracy once they get onto the straight though the acura can kind of keep pace so i think he's probably going to be able to hold off the cadillac going into the le mans chicane on this stuff i think he was able to do that but certainly something we're going to be watching through this race uh uh uh especially overnight once it gets even cooler uh whether when the cars come out of the pits the accurate performance against the cadillacs on coal tires albuquerque got passed all day didn't you and that restart so up in the third position then for the pulsator kind of at ten boulder down down to fourth ahead of uh excuse me ahead of uh durrani that bloomquest and bamba virtually running in second place so the other acura from pasta or bamboo problem jim maguire in the united auto sport number 22 that's the lmp2 car jim moving slowly right we've got penalties and they are numerous first of all car number eight the john furrano tower motorsport running the light at pit exit that's the same as effectively ignoring a flag and that is taking a dim view of that'll be a stop plus 60 confirmed yes car number two two the 22 card mcguire again jim mcquire who's got that problem out on the circuit for united auto sport wheel rotation while up on the jacks that's dangerous pit through he gets a drive through for that and also third penalty from that pit stop rotation for the number 38 leisure dan goldberg speeding in the pit lane only by one kilometer an hour but that will get him a drive-through penalty as well 38 and 22 then drive throughs car eight the tower car getting a stop plus 60 for running the red at the end of the pit lane at imsa.com by the way and the alcohol timing is available to you via that timing dot insert dot com there's a more direct link if you want to have a look jeremy that's the era era motorsports the caliber 18 has made it back to the pits and after causing that uh yellow it's back into the pizza taking off some fuel away he goes also jim mcguire is uh serving his his penalty in caliber 22. the number 20 car that came out uh it jumped into the lead at the restart that is in the pits and it looks like some sort of a problem with the left front corner on that caliber 20. yeah that car came in uh guys it looked like the team wasn't ready for the number 20 high pass racing car um it came in and then it was on the jacks and then the reason why it stayed on the jacks was because the tires weren't out so he's coming unannounced but i think the reason he's come in was a problem with the left front and that tire just what the wheel i should say just wouldn't seat they've eventually given a big kick and a big knock and it's gone on and it's now on there securely and the number 20 is just left so problems for the number 20 high-class racing henry thanks joe and uh so it's back into the lead at lmp2 goes the pr1 matheson motorsport pair but this time now it's stephen thomas ahead uh in the number 11 car of scott huffaker who's taking over from ben keating in the number 52 so oh as i say that they go across the line and it's now the other way around let me start again so it is still the number 52 card in the lead it's got a half acre ahead of stephen thomas in the car number 11 my apologies there for getting confused but they were almost side by side as they went across the line i think actually no the last lap i think it was uh thomas ahead of huffaker and he's just redressed that balance in lmp3 the number 74 car that started the back of the pack in that class his backer is where he's become become accustomed to 74 leads now gar robinson and of efrain castro has really done a nice job for mueller sports america in caliber six his first ever prototype race every castro from the dominican republic has a lot of followers from the caribbean and he is now running an excellent second place he won the pro-am category in last year's uh porsche carrera cup north america uh and now making his his prototype debut absolutely loving it and doing a very nice job in second place in that class uh closing in on him though having made a pit stop but a driver change changing kind of 33 for sure and creates most sports is john barbosa who's one of the most experienced drivers in this field 19 uh previous starts for barbosa and he has tasted the fruits of victory here as well on the three occasions overall also a class win as well so barbosa now at the wheel of car number 33. and has just put in the fastest lap in class of 144 5. just a quick note on the porsche keys to the race well we've seen plenty of traffic looks like the setups were a decent guess for most people they're going well but the mistakes the drive-throughs the running of the red lights that's going to cost people as well so we'll keep in touch we've seen a few of those and more penalties coming in as well running over personnel in the pit box that's never good that is never good and that's going to be a drive through as well for in this case the number 81 dragon speed eric looks driven lmp2 car which sits in third position in class three laps before they have to serve that we mentioned jim mcguire and his penalty he did get the 22 united auto sport prototype back to the pit lane but he'll have to come through again once that that cars ailments have been sorted out to serve that penalty kobayashi by a second and a half at the front of the field let's head into gt d where the battles are fast and furious russell ward who started on paul finds himself in seventh position at the moment and he's staring at the back of frankly monty calvo at the moment roberto lacourte in the ferrari has just gone past monte carlo that's the blue chetilla ferrari that is uh roberto lacourte chetilla and the tricolor across the bonnet and the roof of that car looks fantastic in blue and what's interesting to me is all of a sudden we have gtd pro cars the top nine yeah in gtd all of a sudden there's another surprise and then we've got a whole string of non-pro cars so it's julian and lauer that leads in the number 79 porsche from the number nine of matthew germany the lexus of ben bernice right there in third position then patrick pillay in the porsche and then in fifth position is nick tandy in the struggling quote unquote uh in practice and qualifying corvette right there in the early stages up into fifth position and of austin cindrick for mercedes in sixth position lenny aston martin of ross gunn and the pole sitting lamborghini now driven caliber 63 by rolf inition so the top cars in gtd pros porsche porsche lexus porsche chevrolet mercedes aston martin lamborghini and then the second of the chevrolets antonio garcia and there's uh yeah maybe one little gap in there but not very many it's pretty tight in that gtd field as usual yeah let's go to george bradley uh it two penalties for jim mcguire and a problem out on the track here these are the little little differences that could cost precious time on the track as we were talking about in our porsche keys to the race joe well he's shiving fractions of seconds in the pit stops aren't you and it really does count especially here at daytona so the 22 united order sports jim maguire driven car speeding in the pit lane and then spinning the wheels whilst the car was on the jacks now you know what the chief engineer on that car that could make gary robertson he was telling me last night the thing he likes about the imsa series is because of the full course cautions if you do drop back because of issues you can work a bit of magic and get the car back in he's gonna have to pull out that wand yes yes get the fairy dust out mr robert shaw mind he's pulled off some stunning pieces of strategy and engineering down through the last three years one and back just about everything in terms of championships and big races with united auto sport in europe bit of a whiz with old computers as well as gary which is handy for zach brown's old collection of old racing cars that need old computers that run on ms dos to get them fired up and running and gary's made himself very useful in that department huge amount of traffic for kobayashi as he goes to the high side and crosses underneath us 41 laps completed goes down into turn one change of position behind is through goes people durrani now can he get it stopped down the inside or will the zero one of sebastian bordeaux get him back i think he did oh there's a touch behind and one of the aston martins was touched there the af course at number 21 ferrari has gone around but that was all started on the inside of turn one and i've got a feeling that that number 21 was caught up in that it's luis perez company the confectionary magnet and former wrc driver he was it was all oh no he's been split on his own there was the 27 aston on the inside had caught the inside dirt earlier on great avoidance by the zero one of sebastian borde and his number 32 card the gilbert caught off for mercedes that i think lewis perez compunk made a little bit of contact with coming out of that corner he kind of got pinched down by the number 32 car not blaming the number three two guys just the way it worked out because it's awfully tight down there uh but yeah no blame abortion there i don't think but a quick spin for perry's compact i think he's able to continue uh without any uh major delay or damage yeah and ian james it was in the aston martin who had to check up with as well sebastian bordeaux other than the spinning perez company was the car that was most disadvantaged there had they come to a halt in the zero one chip ganassi cadillac and seb will have to try and make up some ground so it's now cadillac number 48 the ally car from the 10 conica minolta win taylor in second going for four race wins on the bounce here consecutively uh third for the five of the cadillac that's the mustang tristan fortier people to ronnie in the number 31 back to fourth and then old bamba for the zero two cadillac from chip ganassi just uh feeling there we're in maybe at this stage of the race i'm not sure we've seen some fairly fairly sharp moves out there yeah and bordeaux all of a sudden finds himself last in the class back to seventh there he got shuffled out a couple of positions on that on that lap well that's because he had to stop to avoid indeed literally pulled up jeremy yeah indeed that's right and even right before that though tom blumquist uh clearly now riding the groove in that number 60 car having got that first thing out of the way he'd already made up a place shortly after the restart getting past earl bamber in the 02 cadillac that has now been been redressed in fact yeah the two cadillacs have effectively changed positions around the acura one's got in front of it one's got the other one's gone behind it having been the other way around a bit about past all of that lot it's people durrani but all of a sudden there's now six seconds between the top three in in uh dpi that all happened in amongst that traffic on that last lap uh let's go down to andrew who's down at the 21 ferrari af course a bit maybe we're going to shed a little bit of light and find out what luis perez company is telling the team andrew i think he's probably telling the team that he hasn't black spotted the tyres badly they were getting some tyres ready but now i see they've relaxed again the guys were putting gloves on now they've painted them so i guess he didn't destroy those tires which is a good thing for the argentine yeah good to have uh lpc back in sports car racing [Music] porsche 1-2 in gtd pro at the moment and there's been a coming together out on the circuit it's roberto lacourt in the chateau la ferrari number 47 and a huge damage to the left rear of the number 12 lexus now that car they were having a wee bit of a battle the wheel is still on but the body works damage to the rear suspension on the left hand side they were having a battle and the ah the ferrari spun of its own volition i don't think the following lamborghini was involved in that roberto just lost the car coming through into turn one on the transition a little bit beyond the edge he's turned it in a little bit too sharply no absolutely no blame attached to the following lamborghini and not either to the driver of the lexus which is i think has got the worst of all of that that's the amcat of course with frankie monty calvo behind the wheel the lamborghini involved with that i think was misha goykberg in the 71 yes it was but there's rear suspension damage on the lexus and that looks pretty substantial he just clipped the spinning ferrari with his left rear michelin tire and that's done bodywork damage well you know you can get away with that but the suspension damage is what's going to take the time to get that car fixed they run a lot of camber on the car but not as much as that one is running at the moment ria light cluster is falling out and la court's got issues as well with the left rear of his car because he'd spun around completely so it was left rear left rear so something was pointing in the right direction and the answer but to that was it was the la court jetta ferrari yeah and pretty pretty major damage i think to to both of those cars probably more to the lexus perhaps more to lexus than the ferrari but no they're both at a much reduced pace and trying to get themselves back to the pit lane well joe bradley is at vassa sullivan for the lexus and i think it'll be the ferrari that gets back first but they've got a very long way to go we've stayed green on this and fair play to race control they're both down on the apron they're not shedding body work if that makes sense that neither of them look in particularly good condition particularly the left rear of the sealmaster vasa sullivan number 12 gtd standard just a tiny mistake by roberto as he turned into the second part of of turn one the back end just breaking away misha quickberg in the lamborghini misses him but left rear to left rear and body work flying suspension damaged george bradley uh you were expecting to see the 47 go past you and towards andrew it's not going to make it up to andrew no it's taking the first opportunity and went straight into the and behind the wall into the panic first opportunity first entrance which is a bit in well here comes the rcf we'll get a better update from will be on his side of things meantime dragon speed through the pit lane that will be eric looks on his drive-through for running over the pit personnel so that's the last of those penalties we told you about three laps i saw a goal being served so that will disappear from our penalty screen i'll tell you what they weren't listening to the countdown to green about mistakes and penalties and drive-throughs were there and i'll porsha keys to the race another half an hour of racing gone gtd mercedes lucas stoltz leading in the sun energy one number 75 in gtd brought julian and lau for weathertech racing 79 porsche got robinson riley motorsport and that's the 74 lmp3 lmp2 scott huffaker is the leader there with the pr one mathieson 1-2 the 52 from the number 11 and at the top of the shop by about a second the ally cadillac dpi of kami kobayashi who's been in since the start the paul's sitting philippe albacuer cunningham and although acura which dropped down i think to sixth or seventh in the class is now back up to second position and beginning the challenge again joe bradley uh do you get the opportunity to report on the lexus no because that one's turned immediate left the number 12 that's the sullivan lexus you know what it didn't look too bad but then again i could only see the right hand side of the card i think the problem's on the left isn't it it is entirely uh on the left hand side putting that on auto trader on monday take the picture from the right should i i suspect there might be some fairly heavy duty uh banging and crashing going on by the time you get there joe if you take a wander into the paddock so our four class leaders then [Music] at meantime gradient you mentioned earlier on for the uh till bechtelsheimer in that car and he's been putting some strong strong times in he's just come into the pits actually yeah he he left the pits early which is how he got himself to the lead and then had to come in after that so they shut up oh sorry i think so right okay let me check for that i'll uh i'll see i didn't see a penalty called for that but uh well maybe he didn't get a drive-through but he needed to come in for fuel then because that maybe that was yeah i think it was a second stop was necessary because he was gone before he should have been whether by design or not yes joe bradley is uh checking in on the walking wounded in the garage area joe yeah i'm not sure if the uh if my mic stretch gonna stretch as far uh excellent um i'm in the garage now and it doesn't look too bad a bit bodywork damage on the left new door's been uh ready to put on the car um a little bit of suspension damage it's the it's the number 12 vassa sullivan lexus that i'm with and i've got ah now i've just spotted that it's a full rear suspension report and driveshaft and all about to uh be ready to put on the car so um you know what we've got an absolute swarm of faster sullivan mechanics literally all over the car the left-hand side front and rear is getting attention and it looks like damage both front and rear suspension wise yeah i was just uh getting a bit of uh information on the selecar car and now of course we have got the driver this is the second drive-through for the 81 it's just come past me again john and the celitar car has never arrived that's run by af courser that was involved i think that it must have gone behind the wall because there's no activity down here at all as well so it must have done yes andrew the chateau la car did indeed go behind the wall and it was a pit lane speeding violation for the dragon racing that brought them back in for their second remember they had uh made contact with pitlin personnel which was the first drive through uh and then presumably while serving that drive through they were over over the speed limit let's uh hear some news from the vassa sullivan pit and the lexus car and joe's gone right to the top for the update jimmy you probably haven't had a chance to look at the car but i'm going to use the term character building but that's an over-the-use term in racing isn't it ah so early uh it's really unfortunate you know frankie really didn't have anywhere to go looking he was trying to to avoid it and uh you know it's a lot a lot of gtt gt cars out there pretty pretty close quarters so early it's just uh it's just so unfortunate i suppose the only consolation jimmy is that it has happened early and if we get the car repaired we ca you know there's a chance of coming back and problems belittle it but relying on the competitors that's all we can hope for uh hopefully we can get this thing back out there and start chipping away and getting laps back thanks jimmy bad luck jimmy vassa with joe bradley down there in the pit lane and he was absolutely right no blame at all on frankie monte cavill uh with the spinning roberto la court blue chetilla ferrari basically appearing in front of him as misha goykberg avoided him in the lamborghini so he had been staring at the back of the lamborghini thinking about how he could get past then all of a sudden was looking at the front of a stationary ferrari two things wrong with that one it was stopped two it was pointing in the wrong direction and barely clipped the left rear with his left foot that's enough to do that damage to the back end of the car just had a little spin out at turn number six and that was francois herrera in the apr the algar pro racing oracle what's fourth in his class in about eight seconds ahead of fritz vonnert in the racing team netherlands number 29 origin i'll try and see if he's lost a position there didn't see the netherlands team car go through check them as they come across the line next time around that class being led by scott hufferger for pr1 matheson motorsport by almost 20 seconds now from stephen thomas's team mate let's go to andrew who's uh down at gradient racing till brechtelsheimer who led the class and has been putting in some very good times just in and out for an off strategy pit call andrew yeah i just thought we should confirm that they did short fuel it indeed the team have told me that was the case so well they got a bit of glory didn't they for a while yeah if you do the same thing as everybody else you'll get the same results might have paid off if there'd been a full course caution in the in the interim time but it does give them an opportunity to open up that window of strategy now they'll be going longer than the cars around them the stop was under caution so uh yeah slightly old thing to do at that stage in the game don't really see the point uh in that when well yeah but he's lost that all now and a lot more by coming in uh under under green flag conditions so that's a bit of an odd one that'll that'll and you know [Music] has he got a lap down in the class i think so just maybe not quite apologies for the language from jimmy vasser in that pit report with joel bradley there you're listening to radio show limited's in the radio coverage of the 60th running of the 24 hours here at deartornet the rolex 24 back to its absolute best international entries international drivers the infield looking an absolute picture the manufacturer midway stacked with exhibits and a lot of people coming here clearly some people making a late decision to come this morning very decent lines of cars decent sized lines of cars waiting to come in even at 8 00 this morning when we were coming in for the team briefing and this event is back to its absolute best in the final race for the dpis of course we've got a gtp next year if you missed that announcement earlier this week himself acquired hsr and will be taking a greater interest in their past and linking it to the future with the re-awakening of the gtp category that's going to be the top class of prototypes in imsa next year so whether you bring a lmh lamont hypercar or an lmdh the imsa version of the global prototype clock top class it will all be grouped as gtp from this race next year and andrew marriott has some pit callers andrew yeah well this seems a bit out of sequence with the 69 g drive lmp2 car has just come in we've got the driver change fuel is going in there's a man up leaving of course on the front of the car and he's up polishing the windscreen quite a bit of rubber coming out john already that's pulled out of the front and uh that car is just about to go back on the pit lane but i'm going to dive in there in a minute our fuel's still going in there it goes i'm going to dive in and see if i can find the bike just uh checking through that also the 31 whale and cadillac into the portland jor bradley watching that one as the cadillac engine re-fires that looked fairly sharp joe yeah very very quick pit stops here and also the zero one the cadillac of the 01 team taking tires on both of those cars and andrew method tweeted in earlier john with the perhaps a good theory behind that are we seeing these teams bedding in tires for the colder night time stints because it's quite out of uh out of character to change tyres after rooney once stint at this stage of a race [Music] that uh g drive stop was 31 laps since it had gone through the pit lane before so let's keep an eye on that uh sorry uh i think i said 31 21 laps before it had stopped the last time around 22 actually as it comes down the pit lane let's find out what the outgoing driver from that car from alcar pro racing has to say andrew yeah i've got john feld down here he's just giving the crew a thumbs up he's giving what's it your wife you're giving thumbs up too oh man it's been a it's been a fun race we had a fantastic start uh took the lead and you know i guess that was maybe a smidge aggressive because uh they gave us a little penalty for that i had to do a drive-through set up jumps to start but um yeah i mean things are going great so far and um yeah we got a long way to go so you've got to be so careful with these penalties haven't they and they've dished out a lot already yeah sure i mean um and we're already on our what second full course yellow um so for sure there's there's issues um unless my screen's locked over there but uh yeah are you a little bit out of sequence you're coming a little bit early john um we did on the first full course we still had more than half a take of fuel um decided to take that for the box that's john phelps thanks very much [Music] so if that's about right we should see everybody else in indeed the pr1 matheson motorsport stephen thomas carr has been in and out as well as that john full car uh francois herrera in the second place apr i've got pro racing stuart sam cox's team that car is on its 23rd lap now as is fritz vonnet in the racing team netherlands and the 52 pr1 matheson car has stopped as well right so we've got a problem down at turn three uh we've also got the the leader having gone much longer than everybody else now the uh maya shank racing acura in for its scheduled service so the car that has just spun was ori ferdani in the number 13 prototype 1-3 but he has continued to a little spin he's done well to spin at three and not have any worse of an incident that car has resumed in lmp three all right for tony oh and now another issue at turn one who's that that's run long that's the number seven prototype that has gone long that's mark of army and the 47 motorsport decaying also an lmp3 and if they're coming to the end of their entire life there it was james allen by the way that replaced john faulk in the algarve pro racing number 69 youngest driver in the race has now been in the race he's named now for pr1 matheson motorsport that's josh pearson and scott hilfiger is in the continuing in the number 52 still waiting for francois errol in the g drive racing api yet piece into the pit lid as well and uh in fact he's out of the car with andrew yeah he is he's just got his helmet off francois well you're right on the front of all that action so yeah i didn't get that so you were right at the front of all that lmp2 action yeah uh i mean the pace was uh not so good at the beginning i was struggling a lot with the tire pressures but then it went uh it went good after some laps and then we were trying to have a fair fight with some other p2 was a lot of fun oliver rasmussen has just got in the car he's going to do a good job all of us in the car now yeah the car feels very good weather is fine i mean the grip is good so everything is fun for a good race your first rolex 24 i think i mean you were used to be a star of vdv didn't you yeah first race in the us for me and especially in the 24 hours of daytona i'm used to to shorter races in europe and this is the one full length for me so let's see how it goes messy [Music] joe bradley yeah just out of the 48 alley car um kamui i know it's very it's very very loud here shall we call it back guys it's very loud i'm going to go up to the back of the [Music] it's the number 48 ally car that i've got i'm in there pit now it's so loud out front that caboodle kamui just could not hear kamui i think we can i think we can hear one another that looked like you were having a lot of fun out there yeah i mean cafe are good sometimes i had a bad luck in the traffic but you know i think this is race it's a long way to go just come down try to manage the car keep going and i think we're on the good pace so let's see it's a long way to go i think so far we still need to just fit in the car and uh i think track revolution is going to be changed light of noom um you know i think so far we're good and we'll see what's going to happen can we notice one slight little bit of contact we saw out there we noticed was there any more ah not much uh just uh uh when i just into the just i tried to not overtake but just try to grow but i think uh actually he was cool down tires caught the tires and he had slowed down more and then they said contact but i think kai is okay i had in the pace we noticed you changed tires after every for every refuel is that sort of planning ahead into the cold of the night or were there how good are the tires at the end of that 30 minutes well actually my last thing was uh used ice all right yeah okay thanks yeah with 38 sets i think they'll be fine uh if they want a single stint through the race particularly as they're quite close yeah but they're not going to have to double and treble stint jeremy is he's they're not going to be having to travel stint sensitized given the the amount of wets they used earlier in the week they're not going to have to but just because it's so cold out there yeah tomorrow just look at the front now it's uh jose maria lopez then at the wheel of the race leading car uh his first time in an insa race and first time at daytona for those who are familiar with uh racing in general he almost drove for the american team that didn't happen in formula one what 10 or 15 years ago whenever that was usf1 it came to naught in the end but he was a light lined up to drive that car was jose maria lopez he had a huge amount of success in all sorts of different cars including for the last couple of years it's been the world endurance championship for the winner for toyota so he knows all about driving fast cars and he's leading this race for the first time philip albakirk remains at the wheel of the number 10 uh colic and minolta cattle are extremely accurate in second position people durrani up to third now last year's champion still at the wheels number 31 wheelin engineering cadillac sebastian boude for cadillac racing the chip ganassi team in zero one is fourth elliot castroneves has taken over from uh tom blondquist running in fifth position that car will have to keep an eye on this went longer than everybody else during that last it came a lot in a lap later than the 48 the number 10 number five and the number zero two cars and then at the uh behind castroneves is alex lynn who's taking over the number two zero two car from old bamba and then bringing up the tail in dpi ben keating having done the first couple of stints of the race in the lmp2 leading car is now at the wheel of the number five so ben keating is making his dpi debut he's got very few laps in this car for a variety of reasons he was planning on running that car more yesterday but they were still working on the setup so ben keating was happy not to drive that car yesterday he's pretty confident he told me this morning if i can stay within a second or so of the leading pace that's that's my job i know what my job is to keep this car clean and hand it over to the pro guys at the end of it he's looking for an overall win to uh to add to his rolex collection delighted to be at the report that owen trickler has tweeted us at himself oh great to hear from you much better today to the rehydration yesterday after that sterling iron man 3 hour and 20 minutes stint in the michigan pilot challenge which netted him eventually second to position after leading for so long ready for extinct coming up later tonight in the tgm right racing porsche and also earlier on when we had that uh first caution with the prototype in the barriers at turn six might have noticed that one of the quarter workers was uh knocked over during that incident he has been taken to local hospital for evaluation but stable vital signs and was awake and alert at the point that at the uh point of the emr safety cruise getting to him i haven't had a name on that yet for obvious reasons but uh we wish them well our volunteer army of corner workers marshals call them what you will simply couldn't go mortal racing without them and sometimes they are in the firing line as for that incident uh earlier on here at deitona all the best to all of our marshals city quick lmp2 update from andrew yeah we just had the number 20 high-class racing car in no driver change there interestingly and i also saw the 18 making the pit stop and [Music] also just come in so lots of lmp2 action here but some drivers double stinting even if the tires aren't thanks andrew i just mentioned ben keating a few moments ago he's he's effectively running uh seventh and eighth in this race because he's uh in the seventh position in a dpi cadillac right now that's called number five that he is driving and the car behind him in terms of position is the lmp2 class leader that is scott huffaker in the car that ben exited about 20 minutes or so ago uh the uh sister pr one mathis the most sports car remains in second position now in lmp2 it's josh pearson the 15 year old at the wheel of that guy got a special dispensation to race this this weekend and doing a super job too and the teacherman vanderhelm who celebrated a birthday this week he is driving the number 69 g drive car in the third position in class and he is a little way ahead of his teammate oliver rasmussen in caliber 68. history question for you jeremy because you're probably here for that uh we get gtb gtp back next year what was the last winner in gtp here in deitona that requires a bit of looking up being suggested to me that it might have been a toyota now we've got a huge part of undertray that has been dislodged and left fortunately off the track in the runoff area into what is now the lemon chicken this uh partnership between the ac or imsa lemon and daitona being underlined by the fact that the bus stop has been renamed le mans chicane and one of the chickens on the mulsanne straight will be the virage daytona i wonder if that was the 68 alcar pro racing car that looks like a left rear puncture has done some damage and that's taking the under tray off comes to a halt pretty much in front of us and andrew is there yeah running up to the car now or first they're obviously killing it and putting on a new set of tyres and then i think [Applause] if there's any damage on the wheel which i don't see so yeah that's a little bit of a concern but yeah in for a puncture and that's brought them out of sequence they're having such a good run uh stewart and the team have here down at g drive hadn't they just been in that car a couple of three laps ago both of the uh algarve pro racing cars had made their regular pit stops so again this could be low temperatures and low pressures and hitting curbs doing damage to either the inside side wall or the uh or the on the shoulder of that car i i don't think that had been out very very long at all maybe eight laps so uh andrew yeah i wanted to stand in the back of the garage now with uh two michelin men looking at it very carefully so i might try and ask them what they think the problem is so i've got to go around to the back of the garage for that i'll be back with a second john [Music] thank you andrew jeremy yeah i can ask you a question gtp the last year of gdp was to 1993 and indeed the all-american races uh eagle mark iii won the race that year it was pj jones rocky moran and mark dismore and the chief designer on that car john ward he was here this weekend working with the brian herder auto sport team uh after retirement again again again uh in the michigan pilot challenge in the tcr uh uh hyundai team so yeah the following year it was the debut world sports guys wsc uh here at dave turner leader in gtd prawn into the pits for a full service and by full service i mean fuel tires even have a rip off the number two porsche is uh has now got a change of driver also i didn't see who got in but we'll check on that very soon just gonna check on the uh on the tires the kcfd car there you can hear in the background just running and that's that number two wheel spinning its way out and that uh should retain the lead after this pit stop fizz yeah i just talked to it was definitely a contact that caused that puncture so he had contact thanks andrew well we need to find out who's who's that under tree is and the entrance to the le mans chicken it's it's gone beyond the it's gone beyond the turning point [Music] uh not g drives under trail the apr car at spin for milner motorsport fifth which one in their class well that would be the sixth car the six car correct effort castro yeah he was uh about 40 seconds behind his teammate but now pointing in the right direction i think as a result of that spin primarily he was uh he wasn't that far behind he wasn't that far behind his teammate in number 26 car which is cr cruz but he's dropped a fair way back now in our b3 by the way we're not sure whether we've talked about this recently uh it's john barbosa we talked about him closing in on the leaders uh so that's really the first kind of pro driver we've seen in lmp3 he now leads the class in caliber 33 for sean creek's most what's the evidence overall and behind only the only three of the lmp2 cars that's pretty impressive jared andretti for andrei autosport runs second in lmp3 that's kind of a 36 about eight seconds behind barbosa [Music] well we've just described the number two kcmg porsche with a very fine pit stop uh very slick pit stop by the team patrick pele is the driver that brought that car in panic you came in in the lead of gtd pro so so far so good i think isn't sick yeah i mean it was fun uh from b21 to p1 was pretty good the car was running better and better every lap actually and uh yeah i mean it's a long way to go but just just happy with the balance of the car and uh how it works for the moment though all good a lot of concern about the tyres going into this race more about this evening and tonight when it gets colder i take it there's no problem with tires now they're being used dire wire is is fine it's not a problem it's going to be a bit difficult i think during the night uh to get the tire in temp but to be honest uh for the moment is yeah it's pretty good it's really consistent also we have a target pressure from michelin uh so he helps just to get a better warm up but yeah uh it's a long way to go but uh we will see during the night or is it with the tires thanks the 99 porsche um and stefan wilson has climbed in the car and this has got to be emotional because his late brother report won this race 10 years ago so i'm sure that's quite an emotional moment for stefan great to have the big fella back in the race news of another pit lane speeding penalty and it's the car that just went out a couple of minutes ago of course this is the number six now who was it who was driving that it was like yeah uh on the way out so if we [Music] so he was probably a bit pumped up maybe it was coming in we don't know whether it was coming in or going out uh that the data doesn't tell us that but to whatever it is the result is the same to be drive through penalty for that number six car uh who is uh yeah yeah right so it's number six here just looking at the uh ben keating is at the wheel of the uh number five cadillac we talked about that a little while ago i mean he's done very few laps this week he's done less he's had less than an hour in that car total maybe 45 minutes in this dpi car absolutely loves it he just loves all the uh everything about it he does everything better than his lmp2 car which is a kind of highest level car he's ever done before his last lap for bank eating was a 136.7 which was uh quicker than people durrani quicker than elio castroneves uh quicker than uh philip albakirk that's a heck of an effort for ben keating a non-professional driver of course he's a businessman a car dealer from texas but what a job he is doing there he said he told me he'd be happy if you did a second or so with of the pace of the front runners in the dpi and he's doing exactly that he took me a few a handful of laps to get up to speed he lost about 17 seconds in his first five or six laps but now he's right in the groove and that is really impressive for ben keating hats off to you ben keep that going please and in the meantime it's still maria lopez who leads and uh the gap had been whittled down by sebastian bourdain in second place paul day's been all over the place in this in this race on the subject of tyres by the way we've been having a chat with michelin hans ml michelin imsa weathertech series manager reckons the gold tires from the pitch should be reaching operating ranges by the lemon bus stop chicane on a grain flag out lap last year at uh mortal morton at michigan raceway road atlanta 39 degrees uh last november so they've had a little bit of of data from that the michelin have set up a staging area with heaters to let tyres warm a bit but not hate them before they mount them onto the team's team's wheels michelin mount all the tires of course on the individual wheels that the teams provide them now that's to protect the side walls during the mounting process that's sensible isn't it this they believe that if it retain if it stays dry there'll be a little bit of hate in the track pit lane exit and pit lane itself the biggest concern if it does get very cold has noticed uh hans emel saying that most teams have scuffed or scripting tyres and will double chin stint or change two tyres perhaps on the stops during the night time hours thanks to that uh for that information from michelin tires into the pit lane for the faf porsche already the driver change has taken place jeremy that is the class leader in gtd and gtd pro so he comes in and the last car then to come into the pits i think in the gtd pro pit sequence is interestingly the number four corvette of nick tandy who's not yet made uh his uh his second stop of this race i think he is yeah i think he's the last of the contenders the only other car that has not yet made a second stop in the gtd category is the number 27 aston martin of ian james everybody else in gtd has already made now their second visit to the pit lane incident involving cars seven and seventy is under review number seventy is brendan lee reeb in the that's the inception mclaren number seven 47 motorsports in one of the mp3 cars so intra class [Music] issues there so out goes the faf porsche new driver on board there is philippe nasa it's a heck of a lineup for a gt team philippe nasa matija both in that car and that was the handover from machia a great piece of driving by nasa as he's on his outlap on called michelin's and gets absolutely blown by by i think it was the cadillac number 31 that's ironically the car he drove to the championship last year with bieber durrani yeah i think it was it was it went past so quickly i could barely pick it up and he just eased off the throttle going into the kink and stared off the racing line there so that pass could be made very very sensible heads up driving even though it's just his outlaw and if you're wondering why if you're not familiar particularly familiar with the sport you're wondering why last year's dpi champion philippines from brazil is driving now in the the lowest class of car in this race that's the gtd pro that's because he signed a contract over the winter with porsche he will be driving the new porsche prototype next season so as a contracted porsche driver he was given the opportunity to come here to daytona again uh and uh uh in the faf motorsports team he grabbed that opportunity and he's still kind of getting him up to speed in this sort of car he's never driven this sort of car before a gtd car but uh he's philippine as a he's a star he'll learn quickly i'm sure if we asked him he'd say it has uh four wheels and a steering wheel and an engine uh and the engine's still behind me so you know it's not that much of a change it's a bit heavier but i'm getting used to it that's exactly what he would say that's the sort of guy he is still don't know what porsche we're going to call their version of the lmth they're doing the development work for all of the volkswagen ag brands that will be coming into the racing audi of course will be the next one in they're working on their on their bodywork kit the aero kit for that but the chassis and the engine found a little bit more about uh the engine recently we saw the car running at visak for some pr four doors uh under camouflage but uh now porsche telling us it will be a and they caught large capacity v8 not sure how large that may be defined large yes but they did say it was it was it was road car based not a not a bespoke racing engine as such so there's a four liter engine i've heard no i've heard people talk about three point nines uh struck down engines and various things that have been in porsche's in in the past uh andrew he's down in the pit lane with one of the real stalwarts of himself racing over the last few years john bennett absolutely john how was that session for you it was pretty hectic wasn't there's people spinning all over the place yeah i mean um you know okay here we are at the rolex 24 super bad luck um we cut a tire maybe on the first lap or second lap and uh i just happened to be glancing at the tire pressures that didn't look right and we were able to get the car stopped before it really got ugly and then um yeah i got back on track with fresh equipment and uh yeah we made some pretty good progress last season of course you finished just second in an mp3 how are you taking to these lmp spec cars yeah i love it i love um you know being outside of bop racing we're all racing every minute of every lap and and um and at times it's uh it's good fun dicing with the gtd cars as well so so far so good are you also thinking of running porsches again of course you ran the factory squad for a while well you never know porsche is a is a brand that's very near and dear to my heart and we enjoyed running the factory team but you know next year with prototype racing it's going to be uh it's going to be pretty cutthroat and and um i'm looking forward to watching thanks very much john who's in the car now sorry who's in the car now i believe uh george curtis in the car thank you very much that's john bennett boss of course sport and a very good amateur driver not sure how long it will be before the private teams get a chance to put their order in for whatever porsche we're going to call that lmdh to run in gtp over here 9 20 right 21 922 i don't know that i'm not sure what project number porsche are up to now for their racing cars some dumb damage on the back left of the inception mclaren number 70 and that car was facing the wrong way in pit lane just a few moments ago when andrew was talking to john bennett and i have a feeling it got tagged around because it was on its way into the pit i believe we'll check that out for you let's go down to corvette uh taking part in the gt3 pro category with last year's gt ln card nick tandy is just out of a good job right now yeah we've just had the number three and the number four corvette in for a full service of driving antonio garcia got out of the number three nick tandy's just got out the number four nick um what could i say it's the car that was in gtlm spec last year here it is downside one of the major what's the major differences from a driver's perspective um i mean we're going a bit slower really everything ever the car feels really nice um we just have you know compared to last year the car is heavier we have less power we have less kind of trick um gearbox stuff going on which we were allowed with the gtlm car and um and just some different tyres so you know to drive the car feels pretty similar which is going a bit slower are you guys running at a little bit of a disadvantage for a you know an extensively modified car whereas the other gtg cars admit to the gt3 specification [Applause] i don't think it's really such an issue i mean you see some cars like the ferrari has the same sort of it's the same chassis and has different kind of hardware bolted onto it to make it a gt3 or a gtlm car so which is effectively what we're doing with this this corvette um so no i mean the the problem we have is it's not that we're new with the car in gtd spec we're not new with the tyres but we are brand new to daytona with these these tyres in this spec so we kind of you know we're we're learning as we go um you have to run certain cambers and pressures things like this and the stresses put on the tire here are very different to go and attest to virginia or something like that so you know we're learning but we're okay when we when we sit in a pack of cars you know we can we can keep up in the draft which is which is quite good and the car seems good on the infield so yeah it's running running okay so far thanks nick that's that insight that was great best look the nick for a full season in the world endurance championship for corvette which they've not done before the two cars that are here in gt3 spec will steer here one is a primary and one is a backup car the other two chassis remaining gt lemon gte prospect for this year's wec which kicks off at sebring of course as the curtain razor to the mobile 12 hours of sebring for himself weathertech sports car championship porsche on porsche action at the front of gtd pro 79 and 9 79 on the high side is the white blue and red weathertech car nine on the low side as they go through turn two on the speedway is the mortal faff porsche they are absolutely side by side a little bit of weaving a little bit of side drafting trying to get the advantage super late on the brakes from the alessio piccarello driven car alessio a porsche motorsport asia pacific supported driver and they have just announced that ife will be their supporter driver going into this season and he'll be getting his porsche debut underwear in two rounds of the asian le mans series at dubai autodrome and then a further two at yas marina but he's got more to come this year as as alicia and they are both i think looking towards the future for porsche particularly if they're here of course who was the champion in asia le mans series in lmp last year damage to the back turn one now sun very much in the eyes of the drivers and it's the ally cadillac that came off worse there with the zero one of sebastian bourbon running into the back of jose maria lopez a man who has two world championship in two different cir disciplines to his name of course in world touring cars and in the fia world endurance championship yeah that was uh well it was more than close i mean they made contact there that was about that's the battle for the lead up front in this race and all of a sudden now we've got the top uh six fighter one two three four five six cars come on by only four seconds at the front in dpi so it's still number 48 the leads from the number zero one number ten number thirty one number sixty anders number zero two and ben keating is absolutely maintaining the same pace now as those other contenders in dpi running in the seventh position then in the gtd pro alicia piccarello the the belgian drivers have been absolutely flying he was running fourth position just a couple of laps ago he's now in the lead in gtd pro having got past felipe nasser so it's porsche one two three and here comes bordeaux onto the pit lane uh and it's [Music] there is a little bit of damage on the front of that car but nothing nothing that i would say that's gonna really affect the handling the winglets the winglets are intact at the front end of the car maybe a slight bit of maybe a couple of centimeters missing on the left-hand side one so no doubt you guys spotted that good spot he's got hazard contact out on track he's taking on new tyres and fuel but i'm not sure guys whether this is in sequence his time flying that quickly and he's got some not too much damage in fact you know what they paid no attention to that damage whatsoever uh interesting sure yeah he came in at the end of his uh let me see 21st lap out the car it took 23 laps on its previous stint so jose maria lopez is back out maybe just deciding as he was coming to the end of his stint anyway to come in and have a precautionary look at that damage on the left front he's deranged the left dive plane uh it's not exactly at the right angle and there's a a little bit of penetrative damage just underneath the headlight on the left front but otherwise that car doesn't look too bad it was the back of the ally cadillac i think that took more of the force of the impact and bore the brunt of the damage and that peels off into the pit layer now so joe it's about right for this one which is a little bit harder for you to see don't go over the wall yeah too late i'm already there when i'm at the front of the car so you're right i'm of no use to you whatsoever so we've got the number 10 conical manola acura and that's taking on a new driver so driver change for the number 10. the number 31 wheeler can like just behind that on payroll and then behind that the allied number 48 also in pretty much in sequence all of these cars it's going to be like this for 23 hours isn't it these cars are just going to go running around sprint to the next fuel stop spring to the next field stop number 10 you'll probably be able to hear in the background oh and does that change four position in the mid lanes to race down a bit road and it's a slow motion risk the allied car just beginning to slot in behind the number 10 so no change thank you george well that the 31 wheeling car came in i believe before the 48 uh ally car but the allied car was out before it so that's a 48k 48 was ahead yeah yeah i mean in time it came in i i think i i think that people durrani car has been on pit lane too long jaw can perhaps ask the team that was in the pit lane when the when the allied car came into the pit lane it didn't go around it so it was already there uh it came in just in front of the leader uh and and it is gone and it was still in the pit lane when the allied car left now the ally car was from the lead which at the moment is held by elio castro or nevis but he'll have to pit in just a few moments time it's uh will stevens who got his acura turned around very quickly i think he'd gone a little bit longer on his fuel in the acura number 10 and we'll have to see how that shakes out meantime the two porsches at the head of gtd pro continue to provide entertainment down towards turn one into the breaking area still the weather tech 79 that's the white mostly white car if you're sitting in the grand stands you'll see that as a white car behind it's the red and silver car is what you'll see it's actually the plaid of canada heading towards the horseshoe spin for the leading the car that was leading to until a few moments ago for that pit stop that is the number 48 ally car at turn six going on to the high banks that's coming out of the pits he's just made his stop correct on his outlook called tires for jose maria lopez and he's dropped the car but it has continued is what we're hearing from the reports now he was on his own catching up with the bmw number 25 big lot of going into turn six and went off the track and then had to turn clockwise i i the opposite way to where he wanted he had to turn right because he was going at uh relatively fast speed towards the tyre barrier that separates turn six from turn one so not so much of a spin there jeremy as a as a choice that was made and the 31 of people durrani which is sorry now tristan nunes isn't it behind the wheel of that car has gone through so positions lost there in that pit stop sequence for the number 48 ally car was leading will end up fourth after this pit stop sequence because elio castro nevis is into the pits now and down there is job well joe bradley not able to give us that report accurate engine is ticking over little squeal of the michelin tires and it's back in 33 seconds uh that car was stationary and that was the time that the fuel probe was in as well 22 laps and uh for that stint for elio castro and evers and a couple of quick laps just before i don't have to see where he comes out of the pits he was running in the fifth position before the pit stop sequence and uh he was uh therefore leading having a stayed out there and when they get back up to speed again [Music] yeah i'm with uh fritz van nerd here of course uh owns his turn jumbo team and of course owens went to the supermarkets in holland you are a huge enthusiast oh man you can't believe it it's too much to talk about but uh you know what it is we're here we're doing the 24 hours of daytona and uh yeah you know it's uh it's unbelievable that we're here and it's going great we got a great car great team so uh we just started so let's see what happens on a great lineup of dutch drivers of course yes of course yeah holland has a lot of good drivers and uh so back on the world champion yeah absolutely formula one champion formula one makes for step and of course he's not here i wish he could be here but at least we have arena 3k a great talent and we are supporting for a long time and guido van der gadden of course he's my buddy for almost five years now and we got dela murray as a new silver driver in the cars they're american so we're getting more american every day pretty good but your first love i think was minardis because your bags of your team is based on the minardi badge absolutely absolutely and look at this color you know used to be the color of minardi and uh you know so proud of it terrific thank you very much prince fritz fernard uh jeremy um andrew described him as an enthusiastic that that's a very fair description he's a he's a very tidy gentleman driver but he he's you know he puts his money where his mouth is and he loves the sport of motor racing in all its disciplines massive understatement really yeah he what a fabulous guy i had an opportunity to meet him just a few minutes before the start of the race i was seriously impressed i had a really nice chat he was super open super friendly uh you know i run a little scholarship a scholarship program for young drivers we don't have the resources that that fritz has but we do compare notes a little bit with him he just loves helping out young drivers but look he's talked about you know as most of the department stores in in supermarket well he owned 700 department stores 750 supermarkets and also 11 000 restaurants and growing and relatively recently he's opened uh restaurants over here in new york san francisco los angeles that's it that was really really growing and he says for the restaurants what are the restaurants yeah so if you see that and you know i like to support people who support motor race and then you know that be that like that be part of your choice absolutely and what was interesting was he said he i mean he only started the business in 1996 25 years to build it up that big that in that period of time is astonishing and he says he his businesses wouldn't be anything like as successful as they are he said if he was not in motor racing because in motor racing it's all about teamwork it's all about getting everything into place with the right combination of of ingredients if you like to have success exactly the same he says in business fascinating conversation great guy and uh very very interesting the car running in the sixth position at the moment is young readers vk who's been who's uh profited from from fritz's uh largesse over the last several years to make his way up the road to indy ladder and into the indycar series yeah and as i said he has put his money where his mouth is i i have to say i feel like a massive underachiever finding he's done that in just a quarter of a century supports uh many up and coming drivers fritz founded and has been instrumental in max verstappen's early career arenas vk and many others that have come out of holland let's go back to this uh porsche battle at the head of gtd pro it's 24th and 25th it's still the weathertech car on the high banks at turn two ahead of the ahead of the porsche they're trying to get by the critical mclaren at the moment the 59 car and they can't that mclaren is so fast in a straight line the copper coloured machine glinding in the afternoon sun now as we're a couple of hours away from sunset and it's just got between them the mclaren i'm talking about here that car sitting in sitting in 16th positioning class 17th positioning class actually both the mclarens are together it's brendan lee in the inception car the 59 cut is paul holton [Applause] and that mclaren has still not been passed it's it's holding its own with the two leading porsches but a reminder of course that these gt3 cars [Music] whether they're running pro or standard are the same spec and the same balance of performance just had yoda's uncle asking about what was happening to a couple of cars that went out earlier on the ferrari cheta la ferrari number 47. well roberto la court has just brought that car back out from behind the wall and era motorsports with their prototype uh poor lube chatons back on the pit lane in the number 18. that was the car that hit the wall where the the marshall was in the firing line the corner worker but no sign yet of the lexus rcf gt3 in standard gt3 uh with frankie monte calvo who took that into the pit leg [Music] uh we never found out who the undertray came from so let's uh bring cheer adam back into the fold and say good afternoon almost good evening to you temperature dropping sun's still out on the pit lane which is quite nice uh who's was that under tree then you've been doing some detective work whilst you were out of the lane hello hello yes i have been uh if you look closely at the back the 24 bmw and i probably say i'm looking at other cars throughout the field i'm not just noticing all the faults on that one car you would notice that there are some cables hanging down and where a large diffuser normally is housed there is nada uh i am currently standing behind the gradient racing acura which has just come down the pit lane it is a driver change still back to cyber out i would definitely be grabbing a word with him and super mario farmbocker is about to get behind the wheel of an acura at daytona yes we've seen this play out before it's four tires and fuel for gradients all smooth sailing down here yeah i got ryan diel down here ryan i think you've got a bit of work to do it wouldn't be the first time but uh no we were i think we were five or six laps down at one point last year so you know something's gonna happen you're about to have it happen early uh shouldn't happen um you know dwight get caught mistakes happen but you know we had four wheels and four tires and here in the tires and we should be able to drive it back so instead of losing one or two left we lost uh about 10 laps trying to get it back to the pits so we got a bit more work than we should have to do yeah well you have the er a motorsport car and i got the team owner kyle tilley here who a lot of people probably think is american because you've made all your motor racing career here kyle we're actually here for the uk uh yeah no definitely uh definitely not american um living over here but uh still proud to be very english i mean it's interesting that you can come over here and really make a career which has been so difficult in the uk yeah i think america is such a massive country the opportunity over here is so vast compared to back home and it's the one thing if any of the young drivers ever come and ask me what they should do the first thing i tell them is move to america yeah of course you've had tremendous success with what is a relatively new team last year and now of course um you on the back foot today yeah i think on the back foot is uh being a little kind um it's just unfortunate that uh well i guess fortunate and unfortunate there happened it's good if it's gonna happen it happened so early but uh yeah we're on the back foot but we won't give up uh i guess qualifying laps at the end of the race now is it true that for young ryan diel you had to import a lot of iron brew yeah actually so we have one can of iron brew between the two of us for the whole weekend i can't remember who brought it but somebody brought it for ryan so the plan was to split it probably with some vodka at the end of the race very good that's uh the er 18 bossier motorsport well it was a great stand from told bechdelsheimer first ever time driving in the rolex 24 hours a daytona how much fun was that i was loving it i got a ton of time there in the first stint we obviously had a bit of a mistake in the pit stop there so i had to go longer than planned um but i really kind of found my rhythm and some clean air and uh yeah i would have stayed in if they'd let me well the good news is you get to get back in the car because 24 hour race are you excited for the night conditions when it gets a bit more slippery out there yeah i think driving daytona at night is what it's all about so uh i've been told i'll probably be in the car around one in the morning so uh yeah as weird as it sounds i can't wait for that well hey congrats wind down a little bit good luck back out there thank you very much hello there dave monks uh out in bavaria kids are in bed the wife's out fridge full of bearing i've got some crisps with the international feed on the on the stream i like the fact he's got a portrait style timing screen up there as well hello dave nice nice to uh know that you tuned in adam's radio please hello to jake parrott as we are moving to another half an hour 21 hours 30 minutes and three two one zero seconds to go jeremy yeah and guess who was the quickest of the dpi cars on the last lap uh ben keating [Music] he's doing a stellar job in the seventh position at car number five and i've talked about it several times already but i think it's quite remarkable the gentleman driver can get into this dpi car and run pretty much identical times to the other contenders in the class okay he maybe had cleared clearer traffic than the other guys but to be that close and you know he's not lost any time at all really over his last six or seven sips to the other cars you know right ahead of him on the roads alex lynn then jose lopez and tristan nunes then helio castroneves for goodness sake i mean that is remarkable and very impressive now he's driving in two different classes so he's got to get his minimum time in both of those cars which is something that cooper mcnail doesn't have to do because he's in the same class so ben has got to do quite a bit of driving yeah he told me how to do two hours in the prolotype in the dpi yeah yeah so uh but yeah he's gonna be a busy boy again but he loves it you know oh gosh i mean just smiley at his face this morning despite the fact yeah very talked about a little earlier very few laps in that car coming into this weekend but all the systems on the car are so well developed yeah the shocks the the electronics attraction each other all of that stuff it really works well it makes his job that much easier really interesting it's about confidence isn't it jeremy and you know as he's getting more laps you get more confidence i've always liked ben's attitude towards things he doesn't rush at it like a bull in a china shop he builds himself up to it and yeah you know he's got some pretty good experience behind him when you think of him driving that ford gt you know those gt le cars were pretty much prototypes so you know he's he's had some experience of driving quite big hairy cars and he's been able to utilize that very good totally agree with you a couple other notes in the lmp2 it's still the pr one matheson motorsports uh entries number 52 header number 11. scott huffington still drives a number 52 car uh he's about 22 seconds ahead of the youngster josh pearson uh 15 years of age in caliber 11. tijuan vanderhelm from holland in caliber 81 is in excuse me number in 69 is in third position devin d francesco is next up in the number 81 for dragon speed usa in lmp3 just had a change of lead there a few laps ago the number 33 car lance wilsey is driving that car now he's just been he taken over from jar barbosa he's just fallen behind guard robinson again for riley mode sports that's the number 74 car back in the lead then in lmp3 the car that won the race last year he's just a couple of seconds ahead of nolan siegel in the ducayne caliber 26 for mueller motorsports and then about another 10 12 seconds back is larks wilsey jarrett andretti who was leading earlier on fourth place in lmp3 and caliber 36 for andretti auto sport jeremy shaw and john hindoff in the hagerty global broadcast both overlooking the try oval and the start finish line here at daytona international speedway hello everybody if you are just joining us whether you're on x uh sirius xm two or two uh you're on rs2 home of imsa radio and all of our ins and content on imsa radio.com there's a live stream there as well if you're in a territory that's outside the us and doesn't have a network tv that includes you guys in canada for for this year you can access the live video stream on radio imsa radio.com and lovely to have your company settled in for what's been a decent race so far we're seeing the relative performances of the machines frankie fondazander then after the last pit stops taking over in the lead will stevens getting his first experience in competitive trim here at dear torna and though he's not his first 24 hours dude lemon and the 24 hours of spot hello castroneves in third in the number 60 msr acura there's about five and a half seconds between the top three another four seconds back to tristan nunes in the 31 wheel and cadillac stout pace from ringer vanderzander 134.98 yeah yeah true 134.8 last time around a new lap record was set a little early this afternoon uh by sebastian bulday in that same car at 134.4 the old record 34.5 and he's extended his lead now over will stevens to a three second so it's acura is now second and third eliot castroneves uh matching the times of uh will stevens and uh you know it's uh yeah it's so closely matched to castroneves last night was only what uh four tenths of a second away from that car's fastest lap of the race so far at name's original on twitter if you'd like to get in touch with us here just starting to get into that lovely golden light as we are under a couple of hours now to sunset it's been a fabulous day uh the temperature that was uh 18 degrees yesterday uh just eight degrees celsius today but the track temperature is still very pleasant for the michelin tyres 26 degrees celsius and far less humidity jeremy than we had yesterday it was way up in the 70s for the michigan pilot challenge race and now it's round about mid 30s to late 30 percent so very much different conditions for the drivers pit lane speed violation another one for mueller motorsports nolan siegel in the pit lane in that car and that's a drive-through [Music] and turn the engine off on the pit stop which is unusual and into competition you don't have to leave it switched on but you're allowed to whereas in fia and lemon you've got to turn the engine off now again back to the old roles in gtd pro now it's the kcmg car alexandra and pratori who said the fastest lap in the the proper qualifying session last weekend to set the grid for the qualifying race which set the grid for today's race yeah i know it's complicated but that's the way it is so imperatory now leads in gtd pro from philippe nasa in the faf mode sports car right behind those two is alessio piccarello in columbus 79 the weather taker he was leading not too long ago wasn't he right behind him interestingly it's a ferrari car number 62 that's james collado he's worked his way all the backs and way through the field in in gtd pro because he had to make a pit stop right as the caution period was coming out and he had that was an emergency service stop so he had to come in again and top off with fuel before we went back to green he didn't lose that much time he lost a lot of positions but uh that risky competition ferrari is now riding the thicker things all those top four cars are running together about a second ahead of kyle kirkwood in number 14 that's the sort of electricity and dirk mueller in the number 15 weathertech uh mercedes and then a couple of seconds behind them the two corvettes running in lockstep the number four and ahead of number three tommy milner and jordan taylor seventh and eighth in gtd pro we've now got gtd pro the top 10 cars uh followed by the leading gtd regular which is now sandy mitchell in carnival 39 uh that's the the lamborghini uh in the uh in the position overall 34th position overall that's a car barn with peregrine racing uh lamborghini so that team must take no time at all to get used to to what he said is a new car behind that lamborghini are four gtd mercedes number 57 number 75 number 28 number 32. there's a little bit of time between each of those so they're not as nearly close at this stage as as are the gtd pro cards john and for those who still work on the fahrenheit scale that's 79 degrees on the track 46. in the air down two but that's a big spread big spread there but we have had uh the sun on the track since it came up at 7 00 am this morning although about two minutes before 7am this morning in through traffic second place will stevens earning his money here as he gains experience it's the battle for the lead separated by just a second across the line and is that elio castron nevis no that's a that was a another prototype in there [Music] the number 10 in second place an extraordinary run at this race for where taylor racing and he's cunningham and all the racing team not even a change of manufacturer could stop the [Music] winning streak now stands at three the the goal for four this weekend and it's four consecutive wins back to back to back at the moment and they want to add one more will stevens had a good chat with him on wednesday evening at the uh rolex 24 preview over at one dear tournament what a great facility that is as well great car show there last night and some fantastic uh eateries and hostile reefs in that area a real a real fantastic addition to just behind the racetrack i mean you could walk across there there's a there's a wall over bridge in fact so that you don't even have to cross the road so at the moment rengar van der zande pulling out a tiny bit that lap as traffic is playing its part still leading in lnp two the number 52 scott iger in the pr matheson motorsport still one two for their two oregas with josh pearson uh about 28 30 seconds further back 27 seconds if uh has the timing screen updates now [Music] demon van der helm is in the apr 69 car in third in lmp2 in lmp3 guard robinson for riley 74 car leads lance wilson by about 26 seconds in the sean creature motorsport at leisure that's 74 from 33 and jared andretti for andretti order sports another three seconds further back in pro it's kcmg's number two alexandra imperatori in the number two black blue and white porsche from the nine plaid porsche of faff and felipe nasa and alessio piccarello for the weathertech racing it's a top three of porsches there two nine and 79 and in gtt lamborghini sandy mitchell leads for [Music] by about a second and a half and it's another amg gt e3 kenny appalling the very distinctive 75 sun energy one the copper car with the flames on the front i think vanderzander might have just had the best of the traffic there is they came through a couple of little knots of gt d cars as they were battling away but you can understand this is will's first time here and the last thing he wants to do is bring the uh the gore for four to an end at this stage of the gear yeah of course dragonball is ending he knows what to try like to what it's like to gain success for uh for wayne taylor he's a master at work his way through traffic and these guys will become one of the last few years so yeah we'll see this is quite happy at this stage in the game the gap between those top four cars we've got five cars has stretched out over the course of the last half dozen laps quite significantly but uh but again you know i just point that out it's not nothing significant and that's i don't think elio castroneves was running in the third position so accura is still second and third breaking up that cadillac stronghold but rank of anderson super consistent at the front even with no working his way through the the traffic so uh you know hats off to vanderzende a couple of seconds between the top two at this stage uh in john yeah steve tadman brings up a good point about wayne taylor racing so that you know we look at their success over the last three events but don't forget how many heartaches they had prior to winning for the first time so much bad luck but then they've done they've turned that around they've used that and when taylor is you know it is a farming style of team sean crease motorsport have gone around the 33-401 machine in the stars and stripes colours and that was lance wilson who was in third position yeah turn one incident just went a little bit wide i fancy came in a bit faster than got onto the dusty piece of the outside of the circuit and yeah not much grip at all out there actually did a very sensible thing in getting off the bricks he bought a flat spot at those tires doing that it was a fairly lazy spin up the inside of him at the western end of the infield tristan nunez in the number 31 that's the cadillac of wheel and engineering and he's battling at the moment with alex lee for that position and there were alex he's right in his wheel tracks as they're caught up under the high backs it turns one and two just starting to get a bit of shadow in the try oval and down at turn one and two as the wheel and car bricks for the new new name for the backstage is now le mans they've got traffic again that was uh one of the heart of racing aston's i think they've just gone through oh here comes the here comes the chip ganassi cadillac by alex lincoln gaining gearing gearing is there an opportunity for a pass going to the high side as they come underneath us gets to the rear three quarter on the right hand side this traffic it's the af course of ferrari i think that's right in front of the mic goodness that was very close as they go around turn one and the pass is made the pass is made and it was indeed the 21 af ferrari saw a change in position there as alex lin goes up into fourth position using the traffic expertly now further up the field rengar vanderzander is now in traffic yeah but i need to get a remarkable pace foreign coming up to the next round of pit stops i wouldn't expect to see ranger vantage ender in either next time or the lap after in that leading kind of a one for cadillac racing of the chip ganassi team his last two laps thirty four nine seven thirty four nine nine that's fantastic pace at this stage in the race and all of a sudden uh that gap from first to second is four seconds from second to third as an extra 4.6 seconds and then from third to fourth is eight seconds so that's really stretching out now and it's the pace of rank of van der zander that's making a difference i mean again not significant necessarily at this stage but it shows you i think how comfortable reggae van der zander is running up front at this stage in the proceedings as the sun is now just sort of beginning to set uh well not set yet but uh the shadows the sun goes down um at speedway turn one and two that's the that's the west as we're all reentered it's here with the course to our left-hand side as we sit in the hangar eos stand as we are the hagerty global broadcast booth overlooking the try oval greenery and we can see the high rise down on the beach we've been able to see those all day today and there were times in the early part of the week when we could barely see the airport never mind down to d'etorna beach and here one here lake lloyd looking splendid at the deer not much wind either i should see it it was pretty blurry the last couple of nights pushing things around and one or two elements of detritus around the beach front so 21 and a quarter hours still to go and the race in a nice rhythm with pit stops due another set of green flag pit stops due for everybody in the top class so we've been green green with 69 minutes down in this race and uh we're now 2 hours and 48 minutes into this race so it's been a an hour 39 minutes of green so far which is pretty much matches there for the the 100 minutes of the qualifying race doesn't it good point yeah very good it came as a surprise to just about everybody [Music] it's hashtag so yes by the way this time does stay out this lap so this is a this is already 21 laps completed by the number zero one carbon show last stint for that car was 21 laps when ranked van der zander took over from sebastian bourdain 34.856 just remarkable metronomic stunning pace from regular vendors only 5.7 seconds to lead now to will stevens in second i think jeremy for me the most impressive thing about great endurance drivers it's not just the speed but it is that consistency in traffic not in traffic you've you know you you've been set almost always been set a fuel number and a lap time number in the in these stages of the race and whether there's traffic or not traffic as a top class driver you are judged on your stint lap time average absolutely right john yes indeed you are and uh so that should be the fine performance here's a bit soft for the fourth player placed lmp2 car devlin defrancesco gives up a position then to rena svk fellow indycar driver at the wheel of the gumbo caliber 29 he moves up into fourth position and the second place car in lp2 also on pit lane that's going number 11 josh pierce let's uh check in with cheer adam who could give us some details on those lmp2 pit stops for the lmp2 class the number 81 comes in that is the dragon speed car it is fuel and a water bottle actually handed into the car devlin de francesco good old-fashioned plastic water bottle he squeezes it with the straw under his helmet takes in some water and that will be it so it's no tires for this car we've also got the 28 allegra motorsport mercedes in again fuel and tires for that one no driver change we've had the oh one just about to leave a picture o2 it's right at my feet and um just quite noticeable michael erickson is in the car now and the fuel still going in it is off the jacks more fuel there he goes cataract motor driving him out [Music] fellaini cadillac had just yeah and that's exactly what we'd expect because they all pitted within a lot more two of each other last time around and uh there's not that much difference between the fuel numbers between those uh different engines meantime gdc in the pit lane jeremy yeah i think that will probably be a driver number 19 the lamborghini now who is in that car it is uh john john maguire i think that was in john mcgrew excuse me that is in that cup that's the pilates sponsored cop ferrari challenge driver normally right in the middle of the track and the pack he'd just been passed by the number 79 oh he was hit by the number 79 porsche now said this your picarella that's a uncharacteristic error by picabello uh he came down the inside from a very long way but that's not john's fault at all that that actually might draw a penalty for the weathertech 79 car uh let's hear from some drivers after those pit stops here's andrew yes indeed i got alex a little bit of perspiration but you're looking pretty fit and tidy yeah i know it was a just a nice little first thing in the car really i think within the team we're just trying to keep our weapon sharp and uh yeah just trying to stay alive and not making any any mistakes and yeah keep our fast car in one in one piece because a couple of your arch rivals there did have a bit of contact earlier on yeah exactly i mean i think we're in a we're in a nice position where we feel like we've got a really fast car on the 01 and the o2 so honestly we don't need to do anything silly we just uh play by ear and um wait till the morning and see where we are absolutely that uh that's the right thing to do but you're you're managed by gary or frankie these days is he here with us no he's uh he's insane he's commentating on formulary blessing yeah no he is so we've been in touch quite a lot over the phone so uh yeah he's a he's a good guest to have had by your side you've done you've foreign you've done formulary yeah it's just much more exciting they're both exciting in their own right to be honest with you um i love both and i love being a racing driver and honestly right now i'm having the time of my life at chippenham racing what a team and uh i haven't stopped smiling since i joined this team to be honest excellent and uh well that's alex lynn hasn't stopped smiling since you joined the team what a lovely quote incident down at turn five and it's brought out the full course yellow the porsche number 34 with kyle washington at the whale is looking very un porsche like at the uh the front end of that car now looks like he's gone in quite hard in the gmg racing machine just after the king on the way down to turn five that is going to be an exposure i'm afraid the hood is up the door is open and the emr safety crew already there with full coarse yellows around the circuit double waved that incident between the lamborghini number 19 and the 79 weathertech porsche at the international horseshoe under review the good news is that although the car is damaged carl washington has just extricated himself from the car without any need for assistance from our excellent emr safety crew i know the tune in and listen keeping up with the racing all massive race enthusiasts but here too a very very important job [Music] called into action for the second time today after the air motor sport car hit the wall quite heavily on the run to turn number six uh not sure if the cause of that will try and find that whether that was a single car accident or someone else [Music] was involved now this is not good news adam for some of the cars at the sharp end of the field because we're right into the pit stops territory they'll be short of fuel yeah and the gtd leader is having to come in and take five seconds of fuel right now this is the peregrine uh well carbon with peregrine racing lamborghini one two three four five pull the fuel probe out perfectly executed exactly what you'd expect when you have steve died in all the pit bucks i also saw the pit board starting to swing for the 54th poor autosport car but they might be able to make it in the 36 andretti autosport crew guys though for the 36 car from lmp3 that started this race from pole they're up on the wall [Music] the arena's vk prototype in the pits as well now i didn't see when he came in and whether he got in before before the full course yellow actually he's in and out but one car that isn't is the decaying of austin mccusker the 47 motorsport number seven that car is being worked on in the pit lane at the moment so full course yellow number two as it stands elio castroneves leads the mortar race but has not yet made the stop that everyone behind him has already done just four times down the pit lane for the number 60 msr accurate also into the pits for a splash of fuel amg number 32 that's stephen mcalee at fifth position in gtd and tony v lander has been in and out in the ef course at number 21 or it's even worse for mcaleer because he's caught the red light at the end of the pit lane at least he did see it which effectively influenced the race yesterday if you haven't seen or heard the bmw m endurance challenge the four-hour event yesterday the archive is up at www.imsarraga.com of our audio coverage in the video will be on the imsa radio youtube channel in a few days magalia rejoins [Music] i ironic that uh both of the full course cautions have come right at the end of fuel runs uh for some of the major players andrew is down at the conical minolta pit with wayne taylor yeah i just said well he's just in the conversation at moment see if i can get to his attention now and uh wayne yes what's up mate you're usually on a pit perch here you are in a overcoat with a beautiful scarf on and you're a grand steward which probably means you get free lunches i do how are you really good you know the other day i was watching uh that uh in-car camera on the ferrari that you did with me at la 98 just terrific well that's history this is now how's it going but if you stop going uh on the management role then and you're just you're just a big boss now well i don't i don't i don't really know what i do um i um do a lot of talking and and try and communicate to everybody and you know really all these guys behind me are the ones that do the job you know our relationship with hpd and acura and all our partners have made my life a lot easier you know um and and honestly this the drivers that we've been able to put together is first class so i'm i'm not that stressed as usual i'll be back and on the stand in a while all right now one of the things about being a grand marshal is that you spent some time in mario andretti and that's special well it really was it was very humbling you know to to be in in his company and hurley hayward and and um uh scott pruitt and of course bobby ray hall um and you know it was what was really good about it was hurley and i drove at le mans together twice you know and and so finally after all these years we can sit afterwards and start talking about our days and it was really good fun but last question you knew boy doing a pretty good job younger will stevens hey yeah he is you know that's one of the things that we spend a lot of time on is deciding who our fourth driver is going to be and because lmdh is coming along we felt that we need to find a youngish driver that's got good experience he's very good in europe he's the test driver for mclaren and both the f1 car and a simulator and you know this is his first time in real race we've given him probably five laps in practice and he's out there running up front so very lucky and very happy brilliant stuff i'm sure we'll be talking to you later okay can you make it five out of six uh that's what we're going for i checked in with gmg racing regarding kyle washington they said he has reported to them that he is okay the car not so much so they are done for today but the most important thing their driver has walked away from that incident of course built a very strong race car into the pit lane for emergency service comes the 75 sun energy one that is kenny habul's team and runs the red light at pin eggs and oh stops just beyond it that was so close i'm sure him so we'll give him a bit of a pass for that one because he is stopped before the second white line we also have performance tech into the pits for the 38 legion oh no he reversed on the pit well oh gosh that's that's a careless mistake um and the 15 weathertech car by the way is also into the building that is the proton usa entered car was dirk miller driving it earlier light has gone green let's hope that the 75 is engaged to forward gear yes he did he did not back into the competition yeah that would have been the trifecta there for that in our porsche keys to race we talked about traffic it's been stunning to watch and we've been talking about the tires particularly in the cold weather but it hasn't the track hasn't been that cold uh hovering uh around about the mid to high 46 in a little bit more than that in uh fahrenheit 22 degrees celsius is where it is at the moment flexible strategy well that hasn't come into play yet because the full course yellows have fallen at the end of runs for most people perhaps a little uh too close to the end for some uh but no mistakes jeremy we are still seeing people making i mean it's the first race of the year maybe people are still knocking the the rust off and at this stage your drive through perhaps isn't the worst thing but a stop at 60 and we've seen a few of those for running the pit light for for um other infractions that is going to hurt you if it takes off it takes you off the lead lap in class yeah that's the thing and uh currently the the timing of this caution period is not good news unfortunately for for my shank racing running out front here stretching their fuel load and it's going to bite them because they're going to fall back the the what's interesting about the timing of this full court caution with the number 60 car not having been on pit lane the number 48 and the number five are currently one lap down and there was not a driver change by the way number five ben keating did stay aboard doing an excellent job uh as well uh but those two cars 48.5 are a lap down but when the number 60 comes into the pits when the pits are open when all this waiver this uh wave around has been completed with those cars on the same lap as their class leader we're able to cycle past the the overall leader then the number 60 car will come onto pit lane they must be very very very close to to requiring emergency service um so they're stretching it out as much as they can and hopefully you know don't aren't terribly inconvenienced but when they do make that stop they're gonna fall behind at those other four cars that are on the lead lap the number ten number zero one number thirty one number zero two that did make their pit stops before this caution period so the pits are open there's a little bit of concern about the track on the run down to turn number five where that porsche the gmg porsche hit the wall with its front end and the mr safety crew just having a look at that may need some track services over there the pit lane is open the pink and white number 60 is down and at a halt for maya shank racing and that's where andrew is at the moment yes i am here and seeing the new set of michelins going in no driver change here all the usual stuff wiping the windscreen and that it looks like a very quick stop indeed uh just waiting for the fuel to go in because it does obviously take a while and uh the car is just about to leave i think and yes and now he goes and unfortunately a nice circ clear wide a bit rope room to go into so very good stop there from the maya shank guys well done guys nose change for the zero one cadillac now this is the one that's earlier on ran into the back of the 48 ally cadillac from memory so that's a repaired or a brand new nose replete with uh bush blending with both its dive planes on the left hand side good idea to do that pit lane red light is on it's waiting for the last of the car to go through and that has worked very nicely for one or two who were waiting at the end of the pit lane and it was uh yeah earlier on when that's damaged to the back of the number one 48 by the zero one just knocking off one of the left-hand dive planes in putting a little puncture hole in the nose underneath the headlight and the chimpanzee team deciding that was the opportunity to make the change where they would lose at the least amount of time so elio castroneves there having gone long jeremy needed to put a lot of fuel in that car and that that would have hurt that's what you were seeing was hurting him um even though the other cars had only been out four and five laps at the front of the field they all came in as well so it's by no means as bad as it could have been for msr uh you'll probably still drop behind them all in actual fact yeah but but now you know everyone's on the same exactly the two cars that did not come in this time around number 48 number five because everybody else did it they will now get back onto the lead lap so before we go back to green they will get waved around the safety goal have the opportunity to go back past the safety cards up to them whether they take it and then they will be able to run around catch up with the field and possibly even have time to make a pit stop before we go back to green and get back on sequence with the other dpi contenders so this time around the pits will be open for gt's and it will be felipe nasa in the faf porsche who comes in with kyle kirkwood behind him and then the two corvettes four and three in third and fourth position now has this worked nicely for those guys yeah they're right there in the 30s they're all in the early 30s the only car that has stopped recently is the 79 weathertech racing porsche alessio piccarello has only been out there for a couple of laps in gtd standards the leader is winward racing 32 laps under the michelin tires of that car and sandy mitchell stopped not too long ago in second in the carbon car four laps ago and the proton usa mercedes was in a couple of laps ago as well andrew we've got gt cars with you [Music] down here pit out it's getting very busy with lots of gtd competitors we've got the 57 windward racing mercedes in this is fuel and tires only but down a bit further in ferrari world it is a driver change that's going to be happening for the 21 ferrari for af course it is tony vallander out and it is simon man getting in fuel and tires for this car as well the next pit box up aside from their team car is the inception racing mclaren i came up here to try and see how much damage there was to the left rear after it got nerfed by the lmp3 machine the damage is actually they're ripping off the bodywork just to make sure it doesn't actually damage anything i was going to say it's not too bad to where they could have put a piece of tape on it but hey carbon fiber just rip that right up uh fuel tires and a driver change as ollie milroy is now welcome to imsa finally he had to wait it was motul patilla mother we were expecting to see him on the initial entry list and then of course more important matters kept him from racing in that but he is about to take to the high banks of daytona international speedway for the first time there goes the mclaren back out and running just ahead of the ferrari yeah relatively new pair and then ollie milroy that's what kept him away at motul petite le up in atlanta still cars in the pitch the number 71 lamborghini is going to have to be pushed back i think to be able to get out of its pit because the 59 crucial uh mclaren is right ahead of them but that has worked out i think okay for the t3 motorsport north america lamborghini matteo graham brought that car in and i didn't see if he jumped out if i'm honest i'll find out in a second as he goes out of the pit lane and he did steer in matteo staying in there will stevens in the cunning imminent acura so at the front of the field a couple of cars staying out as jeremy described mike mike rockefeller for the allied cadillac dpi and ben keating who's been stellar today in the jdc miller motorsports cadillac dpi ben doing double duty in a dpi and an lmp2 so that's the pit stops completed we'll do a quick reset on the track still waiting for the call from race control on the weathertech porsche versus ferrari incident at the international horseshoe a couple of laps ago you're listening to live coverage from trackside as the sun starts to head for head for the horizon the shadows are lengthening the light is getting into that beautiful golden hour and a half or so and we're on right through the race with uh no bricks no interruptions if you saw equipped serious xm202 rs2 at ridgelamont.com and we've got sound and vision there at regular.com and at imsa tv if you're outside the us and if you don't have a network tv coverage deal for this race then you can follow along with our sound from here at trackside another racing hour not too far away here at detona international speedway united alter sports into the pits trying to make up i think one of their laps jeremy in the number 22 car yep that's right they are indeed and the number 26 car just came in accuracy in uh lmp3 also sports car again that was the that's the leader that was nolan siegel why didn't that come in in sync then yeah curious where where was he let me see he fitted not that long ago i think he kind of fallen off sequence everybody else so um yeah he beat on a lap 81 i believe so uh he's going to be uh taking on service again here but there's still a little bit ago yeah yeah so that was the default daily so in what was going to say oh i tell you what i was going to talk about the number 62 received competition ferrari that now is shown as being the leader that came into the pits right before the caution period came out on the first full course caution a while ago uh the number 62 car had to come in for emergency service and then had to serve the drive-through oh you talked about that didn't he you had to serve has it come in again to fill up made his way all the way through the field and now he's in the lead of the class number 62 23rd overall ferrari tony vailander with share adam tony you've raced with so many different teams that are out on track right now how strange is it for you to be going up against not only weather tech racing but reecey coming to toyota no it's just super fun to be out there i was almost almost sliding to a retirement and then amato called me back now fully committed to this program and i feel really motivated i mean everything is in the right place i of course it's the team where i started i believe we have a very well handling car we are not the quickest on the straight line but over the stint it didn't look so bad twice unlucky with the cautions we had to do the emergency stop but in 24 hours at one point it needs to turn around so really happy to be out there some hard racing prototypes for now they are behaving really well and let's just move forward now peter man was standing on the pit wall during your stop and he insisted that he is not as fast as his son do you believe that no peter peter is a is a great man a lot of passion for the sport he has done an awful lot for ferrari in general uh and a big thanks to him that i'm today here so peter man is the soul and the spirit of our team and our car 21. and simon the driver in the car now is he as good as his dad says yeah simon is really good he has his head in the right place he's really humble but when in the car he's a fierce race car driver last year we did five races mainly in italy so we really built up a good relationship and that's our strong part and uh yeah simon will be a strong driver in the future thanks for the chat tony go relax thank you thank you yeah good points made by tony v lander they're very good to hear that he feels that the prototypes are behaving themselves at least at the moment now in lmp2 that the the card is directly behind the safety cards number 52 car that's the pr one matheson motorsports entry that leads the class in lmp2 and what's particularly interesting about that is the fact that he did not stop during his caution period what that does is keep the number 29 car that is directly behind it on the road and i think behind him also is yeah he's definitely francesco just a couple of positions back in the number uh number that's the racing team netherlands yeah number 81 so 29 and number 81 are both a lap down to the leader in lmp2 so by staying out there he does not if the team does not give those other two guys an opportunity to get back on the lead lap five and number 48 just got their wave around so they're back on the late lap and they're taking service now and andrew is watching the mustang sampling car yeah and i've just seen the car it was a very quick top-up of fuel so they just took advantage of that full course yellow to drive in and topped the tank top i can't believe about 10 gallons 20 actually and as i said red lights are on incident oh red lights are on red lights are on they won't be allowed to leave right now there's stationary cars at turn one uh and that was because under the yellow at turn two we had a spin for the wins number 52 prototype that's the leader in lmp2 mikhail jensen in that car looped it that was the car jeremy was talking about sitting directly behind the safety car and just missed the wall so michael jensen the team deciding to play a tactical game to keep a couple of its major competitors from getting the lead lap back and miggles just looped it coming out a turn one just missed hitting the front of the car on the wall as he came round i think he was just trying to warm the tires up a little bit did he get attacked from behind oh he made it i don't think he did it was very close with the next prototype behind there but miguel is hard on was hard on the brakes and just managed to stop the car from hitting the wall it would have been the left rear possibly on the right range of that car they've got here there's no sign of any damage as we have a good look at it see if our camera operates from nascar productions thank you ladies and gentlemen uh please wrap up warm tonight uh ray is going to be on the roof from until junior rooftop rears he's been come become known down through the years now the dpi cars will go to the front of the field uh they would have done that anyway so if you're seeing cars like the ally cadillac passing at the moment that's fine because they are allowed to regroup at the front of the field so he'll drop in behind the number 60 i suspect yes the number 60 of elliot castroneves because the 0-1 ringer vanderzander cadillac and the five mustang sampling cadillac of ben keating both came into the pit lane and the 48 car in the pit lane mike rockenfeller in four air stop now this is interesting andrew is down at that end of the pit lane so there are so they're looking at the left the right rear of that car andrew yes but it's already left john and gone back onto the racetrack and uh hopefully he doesn't get he won't get caught by a red when he knows yes he will oh will he of course he will yeah oh yeah yeah the whole field coming through and he won't get the chance of another wave another 20 or 30 cars to go by and there's plenty of cars coming in to the this is extraordinary the dpi class split is just started and we're going to have a queue of cars the 52 so after not pitting there jeremy to keep the two competitor cars off the lead that the dragon speed car and what was the other one that you mentioned in lmp2 it was dragon speed and racing team netherland wasn't it well michael jensen's been called in after he looped the car behind the safety car so they've decided that they might as well now having allowed those two cars back onto the under the lead lap to bring to bring in uh miguel and refuel that pr one mathison motorsport fuel only sure adam telling me down in the pit lane so a mistake by jensen but they've tried to turn it into a plus point there jeremy that's your flexible strategy we were talking about before the porsche keys to the race yeah there's not a lot of pluses there except the battery does now have a full tank of fuel of course yeah it's going to be the incident is under review yeah there's only one car number and that's mikkel's car number [Music] could he does he get sanctioned for spinning under safety car point fair comment so that has i think probably extended the safety car by another lap which allowed everybody to make this stop not sure why the ally cadillac would have uh needed it i really didn't need to come in it had only been in nine laps before for mike rock rock and fella but again that puts them back on the same strategy as everybody else yeah that's right i mean they got the wave around what they didn't do was come in on the same lap number five it came in for some reason they came in a lot later than that but with this extended caution period they're going to get away with that one so that oh he's still being waved around so the split has still has still gone on now the i think they're readying a new rear clip for that car i i thought the dpi split was over when the cars were coming to the back so it's certainly interesting also that the number zero one car came in again on that lap that that had been in just a couple of laps ago um so uh curious to find out why that cut that i mean that car has now made three pits ops in the last eight laps most of which have been under caution yeah they're great but it came in right before the the caution period they came in again with everybody else in that 101 and pisses again on lap 104 curious that one safety car is still out there the bmw m4 i'm sure it's north side of pulling in it's uh cruising very easily not really stressing that uh twin turbo charged engine 500 horsepower beneath the hood there [Music] so that spin then for uh michael jensen who taken over from scott halfacre puts the g drive with apr entry economy 69 tishman van der helmer in the lead of the class now ahead of uh josh pearson in car number 11. that was the car that had pitted right before the caution period but he uh still remains in second position josh pierce in calibre 11 for br1 then the second g drive car is third in class that is oliver rasmussen in 68 number 68 michael jensen resumes in fourth position then in number 52. [Music] so we're getting set to go [Music] and it's just taking rather longer than i'd anticipated i think possibly race control had anticipated it as well peter mckay has joined us in the hagerty global broadcast booth good evening peter good evening john good evening jeremy it's uh well what a beautiful day this is here in daytona beach florida as well albeit a bit chilly but bright and breezy bright and sunny and some fantastic motorsports so far in the first opening hours what do you make of it this has been your first opportunity to be up here in the hackney global broadcast booth we've got a good view up here you've been up on the management level in the early uh part of the race [Music] well it's it's uh i've just had been able to get a chance to go track side actually as well and you look at particularly the gtd pro battle particularly and that is exactly it's like the old gtlm days just a slightly different uh slightly different specification and the same driver same brand of cars corvette are in there as well which is great to see as well and being up here this view from the uh the grandstand area of uh the daytona international speedway you see every inch of the track and for us as commentators that's a bit of a we're a bit spoiled up here so the bmw pace car is now is sped up significantly and we'll be coming in john she looks like we're going back to green in just a moment thank you peter uh stay with us for the next couple of hours or so as jeremy shaw takes a wee break and welcome along if you are just joining us rs2 with simsa radio www.imsarradio.com xm siriusxm202 and of course with sound and vision on imsarradio.com and on imsa dot tv so coming to the line here's the restart and it's will stevens who will lead a lap and this is his first restart at dear tournament rookie this year goes down into turn one big move by the msr acura elio castroneves trying to make up a couple of positions there he was very wide into turn one did he pull that off he made a minute at one position he was looking for a little more return on his investment around the outside there huge gaggles of gtd cars coming through the pack in the slightly slower starting lmp3s and eliot's gone past the number 31 that's second place tristan eunice so he has made up the two positions castroneves has always been good on cool tires really good even in the single seated it was a trademark of his that off the restarts or out of the pits he could make the car dance around and had the control over the cars and he's trying to use that skill at the moment three wide going into turn six down the inside the 52 wins car goes uh ahead of the number 74 riley now i think that was a possible position on the restart that was a lap car in there so michael jensen trying to make up for his error of the spin that he had behind the bmw m4 safety car dar robinson leading in lmp three was the car that he went under the inside i think we had arenas vk right in there as well there was plenty going on still 20 and a half hours to go and these restarts are outstanding and here's the ball for the lead eliot castroneves has really got the michelins switched on and he goes to the lead he goes round the outside into turn one chateau ferrari is off and team tgm is off as well that's the 47 ferrari and the tgm porsche both with difficulties there for the le mans again at the newly named le mans chicane absolutely going very slow in the apron now as well but they are on the apron so they're they're at a safe distance there so we should stay green here as well but what a start from elio castronezes the four-time indianapolis 500 winner winner of this race last time out in an acura but in a different color of course on a different team it was uh roberto the court in the chateau la car mac plum in the team ttm car these restarts very good opportunity to make up positions but of course the problem is you can easily make mistakes and lose them as well heart of racing aston martin and it's driver in the number 27 is roman de angelis and he's staring at the back of the number 96 bmw no he's not that's two cards further ahead it's the weathertech 79 that's right ahead of him and adam you've just had a pit caller what i didn't even see that car where's it going it was the 68 g drive that went straight behind the wall for the lmp2 orica tgm has made it and there is no michelin left on the left rear only the rim at the 47 ferrari i feel like i've so both of the cars involved in the schmozzle on the back there peter into the pit lane tg ever stopped at their box roberto look back behind the wall there after uh an incident in the mid pack of gttt as well of course a regular in the world in june's championship got his first poll in world endurance uh at barry i'm out but what a drive right now from michael dinan in the number 96 turner bmw the gtd car he's absolutely battling away with the number 79 pro porsche the weathertech porsche of alessio picarello so michael dinan in the bmw m4 they've had a difficult week bmw but my goodness me he's getting his elbows out fantastic stuff as it's three wide in the dpis heading on to the super speedway john joe bradley has news from aston martin oh there's problems problems for the shankar uh we shares just told me it was about to pit and it's it's the rear left on that car draw aston martin problems as well yeah the 90 at the north west aston martin being pushed behind the wall i can't see anything apparent on the car that's never a good sign i'll check it out and this is one of the favorites in the dpi class in fact all seven cars were favorites weren't there there was nothing to pick between them and that has been contact that's caused has a big contact i would think so it looks like the bodywork's been pushed onto the left rear tire it's worn into the michelin rubber and hopefully from msr there will not be anything more severe than that maybe this is there still a little bit of air in that tire i'm not sure it's cut it down yeah it's cut it down now and it's hanging on the outer bead of the tire and wheel itself and he's got to try and get through the lemon chicken without everybody running in the back of him which almost doesn't happen bmw just about avoiding it that was the 24 rl bmw he can't get it's impossible to get off the racing line for elio castro and everest so a brilliant start for helio castro nevis on the cool tires did he push too hard was he using the kerbs too much made time race control tell us that the weathertech porsche is going to take a penalty for that impact with the lamborghini at the international horseshoe get in now i would say if you're weathertech because there could be another full course caution here if there's debris out on the circuit elio castroneves limping the number 60 uh myers tank racing acura back to pit lane the tyre basically lost pressure rapidly as soon as he came out of turn six onto the uh onto the super speedway he comes down into the msr box now meyershank racing crew was up on the wall right before they went back to green they toyed with the idea of bringing elio in at the green flag but decided not to now i wonder if they're reconsidering that it is bright rear tire only for this fire in terms of the stop seconds worth of fuel oh that's heartbreak for the pig acura [Music] [Applause] [Music] heartbreak indeed but 20 hours and 27 minutes to go and this could be a race where we see a lot of yellow flag safety car intervention and that will give this mire shank racing crew a time to get back and oh big wreck for the number 23 part of resting aston martin oh right in the wall and it is full force yellow i did say if i'd been if i'd been on the weathertech wall i'd have got that car in straight away it's alec riberas one of the principals of heart of racing they were running it in gt d pro and that car has got major damage to the rear right it looks like the rear right wheel has been pulled off there's another car in there and that's kenny a bulls car it's the 75 sun energy one and that's got right rear damage as well so has there been a spin and somebody run into one of the others we're under full course yellow some pit lane speed violations to come as well as we pick the pawns out of this for the number 38 that's 3-8 so that was the last time through the pit lane for that car that'll be another drive-through these pit lane penalties are beginning to stack up i wonder if we just haven't had people sorting out the pit lane speed limit and also involved we think the moon the number six prototype was in sixth position lamborghini 39 has a problem as well so this has been a multi-car incident that has brought out the full course yellow the six mulner car the muller cars have been involved in one or two that's uh eight and already involved in this and the lamborghini that was involved uh was the i wonder if that was some debris from the 60 from heliocastroneves adam saw that car come into the pit lane yeah it looks like that is just a tire thankfully it hasn't torn away at any of the other bodywork but it did look a bit like a snowmobile when it was coming past me so the 98 northwest aston martin we saw being pushed behind the wall news from the team is gear selection problems they have no idea what that's why it's behind the wall oh oh dear uh right opposite us we have the number 39 lamborghini that's the carbon car and that looked like a relatively standard stop that had tire damage as as well it shouldn't have been in in terms of of uh of any any kind of uh fuel but the three cars in the wall how close was the 97 uh mercedes from weathertech and that was coming out onto the speedway at turn two it all happened very very quickly and the speed there you're gathering speed very quickly so one prototype and two gtt tournaments there oh it's a big swipe a secondary impact of riparis and the heart of racing car that's what's pulled the rear wheel off that car so 75 cent energy emg gt3 the heart of racing 23 car and at least one prototype the mullner car the number six we also had damage for the lamborghini of uh carbon which has been interchangeable but then i think they've got away with just that peter the number seven duquesne uh of austin mccusker has gone back behind the wall as well so maybe i'm putting two to two together they could have been involved in that incident perhaps but oh big drama here at the rolex 24 and a dejected alex rivera has just sit length against the wall looking at one very unhappy looking aston martin the 97 weathertech gtd pro weathertech mercedes have marrow engel there i don't think i've heard it i don't think he moved the wheel there was nothing he could do there if either of those cars it bounced down a tiny little bit he gets through but the mulnikar coming through did not and clipped the right rear wheel of the stationary aston with the right rear wheel of the moelner prototype the sun's going down in that area of the circuit as well peter saw the sun is in the driver's eyes as they're going back up onto the banking a plethora of rescue vehicles including the emr safety team are there and this is going to be a long long uh clear up the safety barrier is the safer barrier is doing their job the cars are being asked by race control to use the apron at turn six rather than going up on the banking but i'm i'm not sure if it played a part but the sun is in the eyes of the drivers right in the ice as they're going up onto the high banks there yeah i mean alessio piccarello of uh right now at the wheel of the 79 porsche of course he's going to drive through penalty he's actually doing the ahri vatine in hand and to block the sun out taking one hand off the wheel i wonder john if this is an important uh warming towards the teams that remain in the race because we are still with a reasonable you know we're still in daylight when we go into the night and if we have a restart the tires clearly need a lot of time to get up to temperature to get up to pressure and i think that caught out not only the two cars involved in that incident the 23 heart racing aston martin and the 75 sun energy mercedes but not only that it definitely caught out the 60 acura as well i think the the marsh tank racing car of elio castroneves so we're catching our breath at the moment the drivers are all have all exited the cars that's the good news we have a couple of uh medical vehicles on standby down there but that is standard operational procedure i can see drivers walking to it unaided that's good news they'll be checked over in the infield medical center again standard operational procedure peter particu i mean particularly nowadays but it's always been the case in racing but uh concussion injuries in particular are always taken very seriously in motorsport they have to be and and luckily nowadays we have a much better understanding of what the risks are with concussion a lot of the work's been done in other sports there's like there's a good cross-pollination of intel on that and the speeds that these cars can go and the potential impacts are huge luckily we have some very clever people designing these cars now just a point on the number 10 wayne taylor racing acura will steven say set that just he was just getting into his groove there just we had a very short period of green flag running but in that period of time when everyone else was struggling to get up to pace he actually set that car's best lap of the race so far so will stevens really impressing on his rolex 24 debut [Music] gotta learn quick got to learn quick around here wayne taylor knows how to pick that doesn't he well it was i thought it was a good interview earlier on actually when when wayne was talking about it uh if i'm if i'm honest that uh he was sort of saying look you know the fourth driver is really really important um it's difficult for the fourth driver you don't always get a lot of a lot of seat time and the opportunity to to get comfortable in the car peter no you don't no yeah i remember speaking to andy lally about this when he drove uh for dyson racing and the porsche rs spider and he said you know when you're the third driver you've got to be plug and play is what he said you keep your mouth shut and you get on with it and you and you do you do your bet in the car but that is really a quite a specific skill to do and will's doing it fantastic so far yeah there's an lmp3 car come to a complete halt on the run down to the international horseshoe now you're the man with the binoculars john as good as the view is my eyesight it's not so good yeah the other side of the turner motorsport truck uh it's the only again of course it is it says i picked the binos of it's the black and white white p3 machine yeah i'll get a look at it as it speeds up i think it's the oh i think you could be right jeremy 32 is it i think it may be the 36 the androids yes it is yes of course it is one of the favorites i would say in the lmp3 they've been running at the sharp end so control delete i think for that that's the leader in class uh in i i think that was the leader in class so yes it was the 36 car if i'd only thought to look at the tracker of course i could have found that out rather quicker and he's coming around at the back of the train of cars so that was the leader in class uh josh burden behind the wheel of that car was only a sort of three seconds in the traffic ahead of garl robinson so i think he's probably lost that now yeah that will come coming to update on our timing screen josh said before the um before the the uh qualifier after the qualifying race after a big win in the qualifying race for over a minute he said i'll only be happy when i've got a rolex on my wrist um jeremy brought this up earlier on and it may be it's a a time to uh to remind ourselves of this that uh you can't break and throttle at the same time on those cars it cuts the engine out it's one of the fail safes on the cars happens on some street cars as well and i wonder if that's what josh was doing trying to keep energy in the brakes and therefore heating the tyres sorry chico ahead i i think josh has a lot of lmp3 experience particularly in asia though so surely he would have learned that lesson before now unless you don't need to get heat into the tires in asia because it's not as cold as it is here that's that's an excellent point she i did notice when we came back to the restart there was a lot of people locking up into turn one now that could be that could be two things that could be tire temperature and pressure but it could also be breaking the of course these cut a lot of these cars got carbon brakes so you're you haven't you if they go cold that can be really really tricky to get that that pedal feel um so it's easy to actually rengar van der zande locked up quite significantly coming into uh to turn one as well but we remain under caution for now uh 20 hours and 60 minutes to go um the safety crew is doing a really a super job because to to to look after the drivers to look after the machinery get the track back to racing condition that's a huge amount of work and it always amazes me john how quickly get it done in in these situations because if that was uh if that was an incident on the road the road would be shut for hours well wait all of them an awful lot of gratitude and thanks it's peter mckay and john hindhoff in the haggerty global broadcast center as we are in at the moment our just our third full course yellow we've had it's already told more than an hour though 16 laps for uh just over an hour and four minutes and counting let's take the opportunity to speak to some drivers joe bradley is at windward racing and russell ward who had a great raw weekend qualified very well up towards the front in the standard qualifying session and then of course won the 100 minute race and started from paul earlier on the day joe russell um i want to ask you a question russell there's lots of speculation about just what these cold temperatures are doing out there on those um restarts so the pressure goes out of the tire the tire reduces temp what what's happening out there yeah look i mean it's really dicey out there on the first couple of laps and you can see i mean we pitted you know we swapped out to mick we were in sixth place we managed to you know stretch about three more laps in the rest of the competition and we went from six to first because the outlaps was so terrible you know mick was able to you know keep the speed up and and uh he kept the lead so you know now we're back in a in a really good spot but just got to be really careful out there and keep the car clean so what what exactly happens when the the the cars are going around behind the safety car uh is it really that drastic a drop off in in temperature yeah it is it is for sure i mean you got to go slow and and you know really as well i mean you want to try to save a little bit of fuel too because when you come into pit lane you know if you have to take a little less than everybody then you know well then you might be half a second quicker in the pit stop so it's really important you know to you it's a fine balance of you know maintaining tire temperature and saving fuel uh but it's it's tricky out there especially with these cold temperatures and it's just going to get worse is there anything you can do anything whatsoever you can do from behind from in the driver's seat so to speak yeah for sure i mean you got to be dragging the brake you know try to get uh try to get those temperatures you know through the the brake drum into the into the wheel into the tire so you're dragging the brake and and weaving as much as you can but you know with the pass around procedures and things like that you got to be really careful i would also imagine russ that when you when it does go green that's a forge of discovery at the turn one when you go over that brake pedal yeah it is you know you just typically just follow the guy in front and and uh you know maybe maybe you can push just a little bit deeper than he is because you know he's taking it safe so of course you are i suppose that's why yellows are breeding yellows yeah for absolutely there's a lot of cars out there and but it's a it's a blast you know it's it's you just got to take it easy and and keep all four wheels on the road how have you found with the road just being last weekend here we are race week the road literally going straight into into race week um how have you found sort of being away from home been away from the family and just focusing totally on this 24 hour is yeah look it's a really great schedule especially for the start of the year you know you have that entire week to to get the car just perfect for the for what i think is one of the hardest races of the year and you know then you have a couple of days to relax you know go to the beach and uh you know come back and just hit the hit the track at 100 and what about what's your thoughts on getting qualifying out the way the weekend before and then that's giving you race week totally to focus on the on the wrist on the wrist set up and how you're going to attack the 24 hours yeah i mean you know definitely you know get the qualifying out of the way out of the way but qualifying doesn't mean a lot in the 24 hours because you know it just there's so much going on you know you have a lot of chances to get up to the lead um there are advantages to that qualifying race especially for guys that haven't been here you know you get you basically 100 minutes of you know flat out racing to to test the track and and get yourself prepared for the real one so okay it's a qualifying race 100 minutes you've just said that qualifying's not important how was it how important was it when that went uh when that race went green last weekend yeah look it's still important i mean you're still going for it and honestly i mean you know we came here and we won the race last year and to come in and do pole position as well is just a cherry on top so you know to all the all the you know sponsors and fans that we have out here you know tech comment first horizon mobile one all those guys where it's great to put the car up front and uh you know represent the brand now russell i want to talk to you about the the business of racing uh so to speak you guys expanded into europe at the end of 2019 into 2020 and then the world imploded for us all um how much of a struggle if at all is to just to survive i suppose yeah it definitely has especially with a lot of travel i mean you know we rely on on some of their engineering support and we do a lot of transfer technology it's it's one of the advantage we have one of the advantages we have here at windward racing is you know we've got a you know really you can throw a dart at a map and if you can hit it we can you know put a race car on the racetrack over there so and you know what russell you might be able to give me some insight as to this we talk about customer race cars and you guys are mercedes customer uh you're a mercedes customer race team what exactly does that mean just how much support do you get how much information do they give you yeah i mean if you look over here we got two you know uh performance engineers helping us out so it's just great to be a part of the brand you know mercedes amg is a big family and all those guys work incredibly hard to put the best race car they can out there and they do a fantastic job anywhere the mercedes amg gt3 goes you have a chance to win that race well i'm part of the family because i drive mercedes and i'm rooting for you guys thanks for thanks for that insight that russell really interesting stuff thank you mate yes but bradley yours is a cls i i i don't see your cool red looks more like it looks like more like a funeral car than a race car it's a tough it's a tough gig staying awake driving that thing i bet it didn't come with two mechanics either joe did it no no i've got to do that myself do you remember where which end of the spanner he used george's been a long time since you were on the tools hey i reached my mercedes got 180 000 miles and i recently put a turbo charger on it myself it didn't have one on to start with my dream he just thought he brought one on thanks church you're proudly down there in the pit lane well easing you in gently peter to this with uh an incident that's going to take a wee while to catch up we've had the opportunity thanks to our colleagues at uh nascar productions up in charlotte and again thanks to everybody up there as well as the camera operators on site and the technical staff on site i should also say thank you to tyler nolling in the imsa technical team who've been super in getting us set up for the first time in a couple of years to to work on site so [Music] just had an opportunity to to review that so definitely the three cars that we mentioned the heart of racing aston the 75 sun energy race at mercedes and it was the 60 it was the uh six mulder motorsport car that came along afterwards the other car involved as we reported in the pit lane the 63 tr3 lamborghini and that car kind of got away with it that was just a puncture on that car peter that could have been a lot worse all the drivers out of the three cars that didn't go any further yes exactly and although that's a real pity for the heart of racing in the gtd pro category with their aston martin you needn't worry if you're an aston martin fan they still have the number 27 gtd car driven by the wonderful roman de angelus the canadian driver uh so aston martin fans and we know we have one very strong aston martin fans here at brig be watching um so sarah your car's still in the game uh down in the pit lane uh now in shades of the pit lane which it seems like the last time i talked to you wasn't uh and we've started got the mustard light in the muscle lights coming on as well and who have you got down there i'm down here with jules gooney oh golly yes i spoke to him to buy for the first time in a long time oh you did uh john saying he spoke to you at dubai for the first time in a long time and normally i get to chat with you in the nice warmth of bathurst here we are the frigid temperatures in florida did you ever expect it would be like this coming to run in the rolex well they call it sunshine states but at the moment i didn't saw it so much it's great to see the sun but it's really cold you're always happy to go to florida to have some nice weather and right now you can see all the pit crew is really cold and you too so but it's an amazing race this year the field is extra extremely competitive especially in gt with 35 cars and you know the gtd and gtd pro is basically the same same bop and you have factory drivers in both class so it's an exciting race for us now john's just said in my ear that you're a man of many talents what else was it that you were telling him about in dubai i don't know i don't know what he said but he's saying golf yeah i like golf but like many drivers we were 18 drivers playing with uh you know there is dusting which is anatomy that's helping european drivers to get visas for the one that race all year long here and dustin organized an amazing competition and i was lucky enough to to win it so that was cool and you know golf it's a good way also to take your spirit and your mind out of the pressure from the race when you're still there and that's why also we all do it and it was really cool that must mean you have a lot of friends in a lot of other cars across the paddock i mean we know jordan pepper is someone i always associate you with but does that make it any more difficult when you come out on the race and then you're going up against them instead of well golfing against them well i i don't like to golf against jordan because he's really good he's too handicapped so but now we are good friends so you have a lot of respect for them on the track but also for other drivers i think we all race together in europe and also in the us so we all have big respect for each other here the race looks really crazy as you can see many cars already crashed and wait for the night with -5 degrees cold tires it's gonna be crazy weren't you second here a few years back running in a porsche sorry didn't you finish second in the race here a few years back in a porsche well we finished second in audi to tensor for porsche so it was really painful we've been leading the the wisconsin christopher miss and jeffrey schmidt and we lost it by two tenths on the line so that was really difficult to stand on the podium and see those nice shiny watch in front of you and you're still happy to finish second of a major race but here you want to win that's it and uh cooper made an amazing team with his porsche in the 79 and our mercedes 97 so we're gonna give everything for him and for us to try to have a nice olex on the wrist sunday night how long before you're in the car i'm just after mauro so i think he has one more stint and and i'm in to to get a bit warmer than now well hey have fun and enjoy that warmth thank you very much jean-marc gunion of course the father of joe's going on there who great to hear from jules after his big golf win his father's john mark drove some incredible cars like the mclaren f1 gtr the triple three sp the bmw v12 lmr and and many others so great to hear from jules and jordan pepper a two handicapped golfer so he's a rapid racing driver and he's a two handicap golfer this some people are just blessed with more talents than that's that's a bit unfair john one thing at a time i i remember reading uh i remember reading john mcenroe's book you can't be serious and he was dating patty smith for quite a quite a long time and he finished his tennis playing days and he decided to take up guitar and then decided and took party smith about this it's time it's time for me to start a new career in rotten pop and she said you have one talent everybody has a talent you yours is tennis just leave it at that which i thought was very very very very good yeah let's go down to the 28th uh uh emg gt uh gt car of a gt3 car of allegra motorsport uh joe bradley i've got maxi gortz who's one of the drivers in the 20-year car uh maxie we're here wrapped up are we there's no fire here though that's what we need to burn some logs um you know that's the talking point of this week i'm afraid it's the cold temperatures uh have you been in the kayat uh no not yet um i will give my debut here in datona in uh less than one hour so i'm looking forward to this and i try to make myself warm because it's freezing cold out there and i think it's for everybody a new situation and a new uh yeah adventure i would say um it's never been so cold here i guess in the last 20 years so it's gonna be uh really um yeah taking the car on track and keeping up warm you know what we've been talking a lot about the cars and the tires however the drivers coming from these temperatures getting in the car and having to be physical i suppose your warm-up routine has got to be even even bigger yeah absolutely so i already wear my glass because i want to keep myself warm and i do also of course some stretching and warming up sessions before i can jump into the car because the muscles everything is really cold and you need to bring yourself in a yeah good position to perform well in the car and in the night it's got gets even harder for us to jump in and being quick immediately thanks maxine back to great flag as you probably heard there as the failed went by and coming to the green it was will stevens again for the canine minolta accurate with wenger vanderzander just half a second or so behind him it's a clean restart so far tristan nunes for wheel and engineering racing all the action again down the field as the leading prototypes head to turn four down the inside for el castroneves again trying to make up positions on the cool tyre all the way down the inside to turn six he got at least one car there drive-through penalty for the number 47. we'll go through all of these in a second there's three drive there's three penalties and two of them are significant time penalties but on the restart let's start with the action is the corvette number four is in close competition with the 14 lexus that's the broadcast we've got both corvettes hunting as a pack there and they're drafting each other to a better position into the le mans chakin but round the outside the porsche is so quick and manages to caught three of them down through the kcmg car that was that was trying to draft around the outside 57 is the windward racing car that's in right involved in it as well this is frantic stuff peter mckay in the midfield of that gtd class frantic stuff everywhere ringer vandazanda what a restart from the flying dutchman passing his old team wayne taylor racing same car he's in he's so familiar with that cadillac but now racing with chip ganassi and he goes to the front in that zero one car the amg cars getting up to speed 79 weathertech car has its teammate behind it and they're coming through the traffic as well got the corvettes ahead of them you it's honestly i want to hold my breath at times for this all right let's go through those those penalties we mentioned the 47 that was uh for incident responsibility earlier on in the uh in the accident the 68 is working in a closed pit stop and 60 for car number 68. see who that is in that as if i can get the timing screen to catch up just a little bit and the other car that's taken the big hit in terms of air penalty 68 is the ollie rasmussen of course in the uh algarve pro racing car and the other car that's taking the big i will take a big hit when it comes in because that's going to be standing for a full minute as well is the inception racing mclaren ollie milroy he's into the pit lane now and already serving the penalty 47 68 and 70 all taking penalties drive through for the 47 stopping 60 for the other two peter and that's the chetillar racing ferrari which has had a really difficult day for that blue ferrari crew uh in fact yes you're absolutely right that's what no one that we couldn't find on the time screen with roberto taking that car back behind the wall and it's still behind the wall but this race roars on as we've just gone past 20 hours to go in the 60th running of the rolex 24. there's nina mackay and john hindorf on duty in the hagerty global broadcast center at the moment with shea and jaw down in the pit lane well continuing the bain keating appreciation society theme bearing in mind that ben does not make his prime living from racing he's only half a second off absolute all-star pros like ranger van der zaan the latest race leader he's only half a second off that pace in a car he has very little milogen that is absolutely exceptional from a bronze graded driver ben keating well absolutely superb stuff but vandazanda looking threatening to try and pull away here as well from will stevens the gap is up to eight tenths of a second as they come out of the bond chicane and onto speedway three and four winding up these missiles these dpi machines as they come up towards the try oval as quick as that the headlights are now on as the sun comes down over daytona beach florida [Music] so [Music] these two penalties for the weathertech porsche i'm hearing and one was running the pit lane exit light this is the full season car for cooper mcneil that'll be a stop at 60 and not sure what the other one is yet but that's a drive through so that's going to take that car out of contention we are under 20 hours of racing radio show limited imza radio live from trackside here at daytona international speedway sirius xm 202 and on imsa radio.com in sound and vision as well as imsa.tv another hour of racing starts right now them a guy well in lmp3 of course it was a real hiccup a real scare for the 36 andretti autosport crew with josh burton of course grinding to a hall during that last year of flag period but he is right back into the front now but he is being chased down by the 33 to ken of lance wilsey in p3 already rafaela martiello is leaving in his higher car looks like he's got a challenger and he's away in the bright red car let's try and be positive and think about kyle army he says see you next next year dear toner i'm leaving i've got a suspicion that might have been a burnout in the bright red higher car as well yeah uh just from the angle of the video i haven't even had to play it it was indeed a burnout says the responsible adult slightly looking over the top of her looking over the top of her glasses in the direction of rafaela martial a new fastest lap of the race or a new lap record for rengar vanderzander took four tenths of the fastest lap that was set earlier on but it's now down to one thirty four zero four two is this happy hour right now peter the track temperature has dropped it's been in the 20 celsius for quite a long time now it's dropped to 17 at temperature seven just enough still to get some hate into the michelins and get some grip out there and of course no traffic in front of them for a lot more too no when ranger vandazanda gets his gets his head in the game he is just so fast he's been the set the fastest lap of the race over a number of years in recent time at the rolex 24 at the moment the number 79 gtd pro weathertech porsche is sitting in the pit lane in the penalty of box at the moment 60 seconds stop and hold that is such a great penalty however cut two years ago wayne taylor racing number 10 cadillac they got a 60 second stock and hold for exactly the same um the same infraction blowing through the red light at the end of the pit lane that happened with four hours to go in the race and they still won it so there is we are still in the game and especially if we're going to have as many yellow flag periods as we've had already earlier on we were talking about the last gtp win and the eagle toyota and the return of gtp jeremy shaw's just uh handed me a piece of paper that the fastest lap in 1992 was uh mashahiro hassemi and the nissan r 91 cp gdp car i was at 138 495 we've just done a 34 flat that's four and a half seconds faster than that lap record and in 93 it was pj jones with a 139 3 6 3 and we're not that far away from the 19 raw qualifying record of oliver jarvis in the mazda rt 24p dpi 133 398. so we're seven tenths away from that that is extraordinary from these cars and i still get people telling me i won't watch this because there's no p1's in it yeah right sorry you're just wrong [Music] no no two ways about a pit stop for the racing team netherlands number 29 doesn't seem that long since that car was in but of course we've had a lot of yellow flag running and maybe they've just decided to get off strategy from everyone else uh that car down and gone share adam down in the pit lane for fans of master sullivan lexus the number 12 yet it is re-emerged from behind the wall more than an hour back in the garage not sure if he sat in the car and waited the whole time while they were fixing it but he is still driving that car and just left the pit lane good bit of strategy there from the number 29 racing team netherland uh car coming in a little bit of a slightly unusual looking time but what they did was they stayed out during the caution periods to get their lap back so some brilliant strategy from the jumbo supermarket back team and renus vk the indy car driver on board of course he's worked together with team owner fritz van eird for a number of years and great to see them driving together here at daytona and great to have racing team netherland racing here in the united states in imsa question that i'm not sure i can answer with all of the even with all of the information i have here jake parrott asking how long was ben keating out of the car between his time in the winds 52 prototype and then this stint in the number five of the mustang sampling and now it's a good question jig but i'm not sure that there's a mandatory rest period here like there would but you can't do four in six is the is the the thing that i always remember it's the only thing that i remember about this because i've seen people being caught out with that before but it's not like at the uh at one or two other races where you've got to have if you're in a car for two hours you've got to have an hour off uh in a lot of places it's 50 of the time that you've been in the car but here it's any four four hours four hours in any six hour period now obviously you know that six hour period would start when you first got into the first car so that's what we're looking at at the moment for ben keating he's he's listen he's been doing a sterling job i hope they haven't made any um they haven't made any issues well i'm running out of superlatives for ben keating and we can't stress it enough someone who started racing his wife bought him uh uh an experience at the viper school in texas and he spent all weekend tearing around in one of his viper demonstrators and this was only 15 years ago and now look at him he's here at the rolex 24 matching some of the best drivers in the world in one of the fastest prototype race cars in the world the battle rages on in gtd pro felipe nazar newly minted porsche factory driver in the plaid faff machine from uh from canada racing absolutely toe to toe with the reezy competizione ferrari of reigning world champion james collado and that ferrari they've really stepped up their game for race day adam has more pit callers dragon speed coming in as well now oh they are it was fuel and tires for the number 11 pr1 madness and motorsport lmp2 entry and the reason that i want to bring that up is because now it is a new driver josh pearson got out and stephen thomas the nemesis last year to ben keating and qualifying who put on a show time and time again and john and jeremy remember memories they're battling back and forth for the pole position is now behind the wheel of his elephant the dragon speed is in looks like fuel and tires for the bright orange and yellow machine as well thank you to huge incident down at it's the number 10 that the uh is the iconic eminent acura that was at turn one just a moment or two ago and that car is crawling it's just dropped something on the circuit this is the go for four challenge that is already taking a dent it is crawling along to the international horseshoe at the moment damage to the right rear of that car that's it's trailing and there's a little bit of smoke from there there was contact i'm pretty certain there was another car involved there unfortunately i only caught the end of it because of the dust that was thrown up from the apron i think right behind it was the wheel and cadillac number 31 with tristan nunes behind the wheel but that 10 has got nearly a full lap to go there's a flat tire for the number 10 acura so two flat tires for both acura's in the dpi categories within the space of an hour or so will stevens now he's no stranger to endurance racing of course but uh this is his first rolex 24 and he's doing a super job here to get this car back going uh you know not too quick not too slow we remain under green at four now but he did shed a little bit of debris off of the exit of turn two so the number 31 cadillac has come in wheeling engineering is in with sure adam check for damage all righty let me look at this car closely the four missile and tires are coming off of it four new ones are going on it looks clean from the front clean on the left side clean on the right side and the back is clean whalen has no damage wieland has no damage scored at your bradley uh well i've got a chance to speak to warden tringler and owen's not just a 30-second interview i've got a lot to chat to him about do you want to come back to me john when the number 10 has made it to the pits uh yeah can do uh how is how is he looking is he always that's that's the big question when he actually looks alive which is completely different to what he did yesterday that's why i wanted a proper chat to him see how he's feeling fantastic i wanna i wanna know what the uh what the cure was uh for that putting a three hour and twenty minute stint in the mr pilot challenge yesterday uh i'd give his absolute all we often hear that from drivers this was absolutely no exaggeration whatsoever we've had the number five ben keating jdc miller motorsports uh cadillac in we've had the zero two cadillac racing in with marcus erickson uh and the 31 wheeling car is going back out of the pits at the moment the chester 47 ferrari is back out from behind the wall and we're still waiting for the number 10 conning and minolta acura to get back to the pits it's all eyes on the mirrors for will stevens to get that car back elio castroneves has just gone by him and up into fifth position he's still got half a lap to go he's just heading on to the short shoot to oh hang on a second we've got a mclaren it's the critical mclaren has pulled off on the exit of speedway turn two and he's cut to the inside i think there is a gate in there that can get him back to the inside of the circuit so that's another car that's just turned left and down into safety off the apron oh that's what a shame for the number 59 yeah that car has been going so well sean miller's opening stint was one of the really one of the performances of the opening phase of the race crucial motorsports mclaren number 59 and at the moment i'm trying to see who's driving it at the moment john miller was the starting driver it's lance berkstein uh who's brought the car in the new yorker and oh what a shame they were doing so well hello to kevin mclaur listening and watching very good to know that there's people all over the world tuned in to rs2 imsa ridge you're still will stevens checking the mirrors to make sure he's not getting in any bodies where meantime the mclaren dead stick i think that car no fire from the mid-mounted v8 and rather than stop on the track you know that that's really very very heads-up and gentlemanly driving that could have stopped out on the track it would have brought out a full course yellow but he's pulled it out of harm's way it might well be that that car could be pulled back through the infield uh and to the to the garage area and i think that's what the recovery crews who were down there are going to do just caught a flash of that car whilst i was looking to see where will stevens was who is just about to make it into the pit lane he has done an awesome job because the tire that is flat is still on the rim sure adam it's the uh it is the right rear and he's doing a great job to get that car back with no further damage yeah the interesting thing is that uh no i was gonna say it doesn't look that bad from the outside but once you get up close you can see that there is no life left in that tire the crew going to work changing the tires as they normally do on this staggered stop meaning the right rear which was the trouble tire is the last one to get changed now they have four new michelins on the car waiting on a full load of fuel and that was clearly a full stint worth of fuel that was 28 seconds that the car was stationary in the box 30 seconds is a full load so maybe not the worst time the tire was due yeah i think shear what's happened is he started to turn one and spun and flat spotted the tire and one of them's gone through it looked like a similar issue down at united auto sports number 22 as well so was that the other car that was involved but i i think i saw flat spots on all of the michelin tires that came off the connecticum and alta uh they're putting him in all the accuracy yes but sometimes that is a feature of when they stop in their box very abruptly it does tend to flap the tires so uh cause or effect that is hard to say we've got the zero one cadillac racing entry dpi into the pits this is one of chimp ganassi's two cars in the race fuel and tires waiting on the right front to finish now that's done and is that phil i think that's okay to set the car out of his box the lead mechanic on this car oh and the allied cadillac is in too sorry i just turned around and noticed headlights staring at me and actually flashing at me to say hello fuel and tires and is it still rocky yes that is [Music] yeah so it could have possibly also been is that the the tire let go uh and then that caused a little bit of a of a skid and a lock up but anyway the wait till the racing crew survive albeit with a bit of work to do to catch up uh as as well as the 48 ally cadillac comes out of pit road with the service complete and going well for that 48 car at the moment yeah looks like we're going to get into another pit lane cycle here but let's go to joe bradley and uh and to owen trinkner iron man yesterday and he's got more work to do today in the tgn porsche he has the number 64 tgen porsche he's he's here in the pick garage ready to go into the car but after that i mean what was that that was an iron man stint three hours 20 in the michelin pilot challenge a portion position at the end of all that effort however it really took it out of you didn't it yeah i really did i mean i wanted that win for ted really bad and we just felt a little short but hands off to my guys at tgm and uh joe vardy and everybody there we put a great car underneath this whole race and uh yeah it was at three hours and 20 minutes with no water and had to shut the ac off there for the last two hours trying to run down that 28 car we just were as trimmed out as they were and still a great finish first podium for ted overall and i gotta think the medical staff here they drug me from the podium so i didn't get to celebrate with ted yesterday but they did a great job put some iv in me and two two bags of that and uh seven o'clock last night i felt like a new man so that's that's incredible so so not i've been three hours 20. for three hours 20 where you were trying to make up the disadvantage of that straight line speed you you were obviously flat out using everything you could in the twisty bits yeah i probably used a little bit of the car up to that i got a great restart as you guys probably saw there and i got back to the front and then the last 30 minutes i probably just used up the rear tires a little bit too much because i knew i was really good in the infield but i was just pushing so hard to try to stay ahead of them and try to build a gap and then obviously i started cramping up probably the last five laps everything was just kind of shutting down on my body and unfortunately i couldn't make the podium with ted but i'm just so happy for our guys and see what we can do today see if we can end up there sunday afternoon back on the podium hopefully i can celebrate that one we got a really fast hot rod and john wright's up on the box here it's awesome to have john on the radio with me i used to work for john and as a crew guy so uh kids out there never give up on your dream because i used to be one of these guys running around here now i'm getting to drive in this race and uh it's awesome i think we got a shot to win this thing and see what happens mate it's great to hear you sounding and looking like you should look and the right color high notes just suggested if you want an indication of just how dehydrated you were listen to the audio in the winner's circle with you you sounded like you you've been on a night out i think yeah i got a couple of texts from maddie and said man i can't repeat this on radio but man you sounded terrible that's what they told me and then there's a couple of buddies among their they got a whole whole group from nashville they said we just know what he needs because they parked till 9 30 in the morning yesterday they said he just need some iv and he'll be fine so you know what they were doing absolutely great to see you man thank you thank you yeah as soon as i heard that interview in the booth i said oh he sounds really dehydrated i hope he's all right uh great to hear him back to his normal cell phone twinkler will be taking uh a stint in this race 19 hours and 40 minutes still to go peter mckay and john hinov in the heighty global broadcast both overlooking the try oval here at daytona international speedway it's joe bradley and andrew marriott joining us in the pit lane we'll hear from andrew in a moment so a few driver changes to talk about in the number 16 right motorsport porsche none other than richard leetz on board that machine taking over from ryan hardwick and we know just how fast richard lee says he's been a porsche factory driver for well over 15 years as well and we should see the pace of that car pick up very very quickly indeed unfortunately it's bad news uh for uh fans of the 47 chetalar ferrari back behind the wall again ah so just that the uh daytona adventure for that italian squad not quite going to plan in out in out there's a song in there that's somewhere somewhere that could be roberto they caught won't be seeing it in quite such a uh interesting way as that and certainly not as jerky ways that they've not had a lot of look uh a couple of big moments for that car that's taking it behind the wall twice adam's a radio if you'd like to get in touch heidegger huffman enjoying our coverage only a sixth of the way through he's just reminded don't do that our porsche keys to the race was all about breaking it up i suppose you're right but we should see it um yeah as we've we've done a sixth excellent that's good get to midnight get in the morning get to the zoom get to noon and don't forget those michelin endurance cut points as well that are awarded through the through the uh evening hours darkness uh six o'clock so it's officially sunset about now actually this is a beautiful red glow in the sky just enough uh cloud cover or a little bit of uh of dust in the air that we can see that reflected in the eastern side of the race whereas of course the sun's going down behind us fantastic part of the evening and the lights around the circuit peter just beginning to take effect on pitlin and on the infield sections and indeed some of the very jazzy endurance lights that a lot of the cars wear as well which makes them easier to spot out on track there as well but we always talk about happy hour in an endurance race we've seen a lot of fast lap times over the last 20 minutes or so at the moment it's happy hour for the 62 ferrari james collado has opened up the gap to 3.3 seconds to philippe nazar in the gtd pro category now 3.3 seconds might not say much but in the context of gtd pro that's a fortnight french van der zander is absolutely throwing this car at the corners that leads the race at the moment it is the zero one chip can actually run cadillac racing dpi 3.1 seconds to the good on the wheel and engineering tristan nunes driven red and white number 31 catalan and then it's marcus erickson in the zero two the sister car the leader that's the dark red at the back black at the front car i like catalog that looks mostly uh white with a bit of purple in it if you're watching from further field mike rockefeller in the 48 he's about two seconds away from third at the moment then italia castro never another good restart potelio hasn't been able to to turn that into a better position six seconds away from mike and then richard westbrook for gdc miller three seconds further back and that's a puncture that spin and puncture for will stevens in the cunningham and all the acura erx05 has cost him two laps to the leader it's renus vk that leads for racing team netherlands in the lmp2 category in eighth position the number 29 car has five call it six seconds on anders fjord back for high class racing michael jensen in third in the 52 car which is one of two cars that is crude this weekend with ben keating in the car he's had a brilliant start in the race and she adam has the texan yeah he did have a brilliant start setting the fastest time out there with guys like alex lynn around you on the circuit at one point you were the fastest guy on the circuit in dpi that is cool then yeah that was uh maybe the most fun i've ever had in a race guard yeah so much fun it i got i worked up to it slowly i didn't want to take any risk but uh after i did two stints i double centered the tires for my first two stints uh then we got brand new tires uh and uh those restarts you know i was at the back of the dpi pack which i loved because i got incredible draft i've got six other dpis in front of me so i get some really great top speed uh and uh golly it was fun you know as you said i did a one minute 35.1 second lap far and away the fastest i've ever gone around this track and uh what a blast it was uh so much fun i'm i'm honored that uh these guys had enough faith to put a bronze driver behind the wheel and uh i just had so much fun the cadillac is amazing such an incredible car to drive out there and uh golly it was just incredible two hours of uh absolute blast are they gonna give you any more time in the car we'll see uh we'll see i need to go take care of my obligations in the 52 lmp2 first and uh we'll see where it goes fingers crossed for you hey thank you very much mega stuff from ben keating representing all of us who if we had the wherewithal would be doing the same thing and doing it very well this is one of the quality parts of sports guard racing even at this high level even at world championship level peter that you know with a a little bit of investment with a bit of money on the table you can get out there and race you could buy a nfl team but you can't be quarterback you could buy a major league baseball franchise but you can't be starting pitcher not if you want to have success but in mourner racing particularly in sports car racing you can go out and be on the same track as all of these names and in ben's case be as quick as they were in that opening stint absolutely extraordinary and that is the big difference i think that is why we're all so excited with what ben's done today is that yes you can the opportunity is there to if you've got the means to do so you can be part of this incredible super bowl of racing but the difference as you rightly said there john ben has been able to do that and match the full-time pros and to be up there on the timesheets that's the great thing about motor racing as well the stopwatch does not lie and that was just some fantastic driving ben uh he's earned his dinner should we say tonight now we've cleared up the question of what happened with the number 59 critical mclaren it was clobbered by the number 14 lexus and it's going through the pit lane now the lexus that is for the drive-through for incident responsibility meantime elio castroneves king of the fast starters is in the pit lane adam he's going to be staying with me and i'm hopefully going to be sticking a mic under his nose here shortly because it is time for oliver jarvis long-time stalwart of the mazda program to go out on the track of that car very slightly but ollie making no notice of that just went out there is a crack in the body work just above the wheel that is the most fragile part of these dpis the the thinnest that the um material that the cars are made out of because it's not entirely a carbon fiber it's a carbon composite that's where it is weakest so if something is going to break on the rear that's exactly where it would go and that was the side where they had the puncture was it not [Music] so michael dinan's just got out of the number 96 that's the turning water sport bmw the liquid molly livery car michael it's been a bit of a character building weekend for all of the bmws in this field how's the liquid molly car doing yeah we're we're doing well you know just a battle of attrition right now and we might not have the straight line speed but we're just trying to stay out of trouble and uh you know stay on the lead lap and do what we can do so so far so good on that one yeah so far so good the whole team's doing an amazing job bill's in the car now so you know i think uh hopefully he can make up a few positions and we'll see where we end up have you guys encountered any issues with uh the rear under three we've seen other bmws lose their rear under trait but i'm not sure whether your car's done the same yeah so far so good so uh we'll just keep our fingers crossed and hope that uh holds together for the rest of the race okay thanks michael driver change at the wheel of the number nine porsche and gtd pro felipe nazar hopping out and i would suspect that will be matt campbell getting in we haven't seen him yet in the race after a super stint from mature germany at the start of the race we should see uh matt campbell the young australian getting on board the young but incredibly experienced australian getting on board that number nine plaid faf yeah he's uh very well thought of by matt campbell that is matty campbell very well thought of by porsche came up through carrera cup down there and has repaid the confidence in him he is a really really impressive young driver hello to peter fiddling back in the uk [Music] good to know that his passion for sports car racing is intact at imsa radio.com dpis at the front of the field lmp2 base chassis spines as they call them you can change one or two things on that you don't have to have the standard gibson engine you can change the uh aero on the cars but they have to have some design aspects from the manufacturer you are representing and [Music] also changing dampers as well and suspension like as expecting lmp2 lmp2 is the lmp2 chassis obviously from one of four manufacturers with the spec gibson engine with a single aero package homologated and with spec brakes and dampers uh lmp3 is slightly more manufacturers i think it's still six manufacturers for lmp3 and here we've got uh legit and decaying nate norma represented and again that's a spec drivetrain on that car and gtd and gtd pro the cars are the same the brps are the same it's the driving lineups that make the difference uh gtd pro uh as the name suggests is uh pro lineups manufacturer entered cars for the most part it's the idea behind it and in the the standard gtd then you have to have a different split of drivers that can't include uh the full complement of pro drivers that's how it runs in terms of the specifications but the cars in gtd prawn gtt absolutely the same ring the cmp jimmy johnson is getting ready on the pit wall moldable nascar cup winner champion winner championship yeah the number uh the number 48 yeah about to be handed over to jimmy johnson seven times a champion in nascar and two times the winner of the daytona 500. now what a cool double that could be winning the two great uh the big the big race here at daytona to win the 500 and the rolex 24 what a combination that would be being good around here in the quarter caller 400 as well um sure adam how many times has he won the quarter caller 400 jimmy [Music] a lot of people getting ready for pit stops down here on the gt end of the fin lane as well as jimmy johnson getting into that ally racing cadillac we've got the lexus the 14 with jack boxworth from [Music] part of deangelis aston martin and the reason that this pit stop is relevant it is the first one that i have seen where they have done the data stick swap now this is something that emsa mandates as uh the 71 lamborghini is going behind the wall by the way that's the t3 motorsport in north america um so data sticks what they have to do is they have to switch them out between the hour the fourth and the sixth hour of the race the 10th and the 12th hour the 16th and the 18th and then when the car goes through check basically if some monitoring in real time that the teams aren't doing anything strange to their cars so if you do not turn in your data stick within 15 minutes of pulling it out of the car well that's going to be another drive-through penalty so just something else for the people who don't normally compete in himself keep an eye on it's even further in the room a lot of attention going on to the number 63 gtd pro lamborghini huracan at the moment the rear right of that car the mechanics looking very closely around the brake rotor it's certainly very early i mean i'm sure it won't be a break change especially not the rear but yeah the mechanics clambering around that car at the moment as it sits in pit lane and this is a long stop for that 63 car also in the 44 magnus aston martin and that looks a little more yeah regular but you're right peter they're not happy with something on the right rear i think it was the wheel hub because once they got it sorted they just bang the wheels wheel back on and that's bright green number 63. it's running at pit stop time down at corvette gtd cars who's down at that end of the piece that'll be sure uh fuel and tires and driver changes for both of the corvettes i can see jordan taylor getting out i could not see who was getting it but i believe on the driver's side door of the four and the three respectively they leave in that same order with the 24 bmw right behind them also under the pit lane is the 14 lexus for ambassador sullivan that's who i'm standing by right now this two with the driver team jack oxford got in kyle kirkwood got out joe bradley the 99 team hardpoint porsche just been brought in stefan i wanted to grab we supported you earlier stefan wilson we spoke to you earlier but i wanted to find out just what i was like you finally been out in the race wow yeah that was just an absolute blast you know it was super stressful you're trying to look after the car you're trying to keep it clean 20 hours to go we know we've got a quick car this team has done such a good job and i just put a lot of pressure on myself i just wanted to execute do everything right and uh hand off the car in a good spot and just had a blast it's really fun racing out here at daytona and uh yeah definitely a bit uh i'm a bit relieved now so i've got a stint under my belt i'll get ready now for another stint around midnight and we'll go again how tricky are the restarts stefan after those long caution periods ah they're really tricky you know i radioed into the team you know i uh the first restart we i got on it went after it really had to dodge a lot of carnage hey and you're just asking yourself there's 20 hours to go we've got a fast car how much do we risk it you know it's risk versus reward so the second restart wasn't so good i lost a couple of positions just because i was like trying to look after my car and then after that i picked him off and regained those positions so i'm really happy with that performance team has done such a good job with this car we've just came on leaps and bounds ever since the war and uh yeah i can't thank the engineers here enough great stuff get your caught on before you catch your call man he's from yorkshire it should be in his shorts and t-shirt well you don't doesn't sound that uh right now uh hello to carol brink over in monterey tweeting at himself hello to steve gotta love ben keaton he is living my dream not that you would expect him to put you in here not even expecting not to but you can hear the love and passion that he has for what he does totally agree with you steve hello to kirsty collin going to get cool tonight interesting to see how the cars and tyres caught with it anyone think of anywhere it gets as cold as this nurburgring depending on which time of the year we've had snow and hill there there's something going law on the lawn slaw on the banking a bit earlier than they really need to to get into the pit lane let's see if we can pick up what car that was it did have lights on here it comes into the pit lane now but it committed to the bottom of the speedway very very early i think this is the magnus aston backing again oh from the uh lights on the roof of the car yeah it is that car's just gone out of the pit lane so it's uh it's andy lally and he clearly doesn't like what he's feeling that's joel's end of the pits he'll have a wonder yeah i was just going to ask you that this is andy lally's 20th rolex 24-hour start as well so trying to uh this is not good of course a new car for the magnus outfit they ran an acura nsx last year a lamborghini that came second with a lamborghini hurricane two years ago what a relatively short stop so whatever the issue is and he's happy enough and the magnus team happy enough to get back going and they've got a scotsman in their team this year and none other than johnny adam of cody yeah aston works driver joe bradley is uh down at that end of things for us in the pit lane for himself hard to find him uh andy lally brought the car in driver's door open two crew members engage in conversation and then the door was shut so whatever the issue was it was a very quick fix i'll try and get an answer from the team and i've just missed leaning over the wall and finding that out let's see if i can get a word any any night he can't hear me either i'll fight what was the problem there uh bad steering wheel wasn't quite on we changed wheels and turn them back out right okay steering wheel a bad steering wheel i'm not sure what that means probably not working correctly yeah correct uh they're full of electronics nowadays of course they don't just uh turn the steering column all kinds of buttons and adjustments on there for tracking control abs engine maps and the paddle shift as well of course on all the gt cars on all the cars out here there's not a gear lever in sight anymore so out and back in again for that do i have to get my marker of team out for the 50 nicest ivan chambers uh no news since it pulled over it hasn't come back out on the track i can't see the area of the track where it pulled in when it came down it's one of the few places we can't actually see it was on the it's on the uh on the far side of lake lloyd there is a cut through and an infield road there they might have been able to pull that back but of course we can't see from here if they have done if it can be fixed it will be allowed to go out external assistance here does not disqualify the car into the pit lane for the bright yellow jumbo sponsored racing team netherland number 29 and sure adam is watching that pissed off all going very smoothly they did the right side tires first now they're doing the left side towers a windshield tear off and it was a driver change am i correct the fueling is the last thing to finish from this pins up i love the fact that they have a guy who stands in front of the car with a board that says ready and then as soon as he lifts it that's included drop the punch give it all the right foot you can muster and get out of the pits new cast of characters at the front of the gtd pro field james collado after a superb stint for the world champion uh handing over to davide regan in the number 62 rizzi competizione ferrari so uh um giuseppe rizzi being taken to dinner on his golf buggy the other day uh well yeah i said the other day it was yesterday it's called all blurs like a long time away doesn't it it does but dennis olsen uh the norwegian driver had a great chat with him yesterday uh young dennis um really really nice young man and a real porsche star he's in the kcmg number two car in second marrow engel stayed on board the number 97 um weathertech racing mercedes and matt campbell correct has got into the faf motorsport machine now the driver changes for corvette marco sorenson in a corvette we're gonna have to keep saying that to ourselves to get that out into the into the groove of course formerly of aston martin so marco sorenson in the number four corvette the number three carvet nikki katzberg my man in the meeting from lamar last year in that number three machine thanks to david raleigh who is over on that uh side of the track of one of the the bleachers there and has sent us a picture of the critical mclaren being towed back to the pit lane so they could be working on that presumably the garage area actually but uh yeah thank you david for that lovely sky color when you took that picture earlier on so that car has come back just a few moments ago or a little while ago 19 hours and 17 minutes still to go regular vanderzander for cadillac by said crucial mclaren what did i say critical yes sorry christian mclaren and they're in a critical situation to be uh to pull back thank you ranger vanderzander leads for cadillac racing in the dpi by six point four seconds from whale and engineering's tristan nunez in the 31 then it's marcus erickson now 14 seconds further back and coming under pressure from mike rockman fella in the ally cadillac round about another uh 10 laps or 15 minutes or so before we see those cars back into the pit lane rengar has a three-lap cushion on the cars behind him he's got three laps more to do if that makes any sense the first of these stoppers in the battle at the front of the field will be richard westbrook who came in a lap before everybody else and he's the last man on the lead lap at the moment oliver jarvis is just off the lead lap well let me wait till he comes through yes he's just off the lead lap in the msr with kerb again number 60 acura that's the pink and white car will stevens after that spin and flat spotting the tires causing a puncture which happened he spun it at turn one uh pretty certain there was another car involved there but i've not seen that again i think uh we only had the aftermath from the helicopter shot and i only swiveled around to see it because i caught the the dust that was out there and couldn't get the finals on it quickly enough to see which car it was and there's not been an investigation announced either to give us a clue but that's cost them daily two laps there from being at the sharp end of the field good news if you are a fan of the number 71 because that car after an extended period behind the pit wall for the t3 motorsport north america lamborghini gt3 team matteo glenrena is back out 16th position in uh gtd a couple of people asking about the bmw's um bmw m team rll sheldon fonda linda is uh running at the moment in 11th and 51st position and jesse cron is in ninth in class in 42nd position after their wars earlier on 47 motorsport being creative with the yellows and the with the yellow marker lights on their car heading up under the backing at the moment whilst they of course i prefer the light green there's a few different ways of going about this peter mckay yeah for fans of the uh left for the lexus crew the number 14 lexus rcf jax hocksworth at the wheel right now uh driving alongside ben barnicott and used a new signing to that crew despite the little tangle with the number 59 crucial motorsport uh mclaren and the subsequent drive-through penalty they have hung on to the lead lapping gtd pro and that car's got some real pace uh as well so as things start to shake out i would expect that car to come right back oh and just as i say that oh jack you're making me look clever here he's just done the fastest laptop over the race for that car 145.1 thank you for that chip ganassi zero two in the pit lane that's jules end of things uh this looks pretty uh that looks a fairly standard stop there's a quick look at the the uh the uh quick look at the brakes there on that zero two car spin of the wheels and it's already rolling 36 seconds that car was stationary and heads out onto the put lane hello tom firth who's tweeted at himself radio [Music] said heartbroken for heart of racing's gtd pro retirement but otherwise enjoying a great day 24 so far question maybe for the small hours getting in now because otherwise i'll never find it scrawling back through the twitter does the ford gt3 announcement earlier this week signal there's no diversions from stock gt3 in the ac or imsa classes well i don't think anybody's talked about it seriously as such there was some discussion about it um when gtd pro was announced but that's been decided that's not going to happen i don't suggest that ford would make any difference to that they have said it would be a gtd pro and a gtd standard a program in 2024 but that's several years away and well as to what the acr are going to do no clue but you've heard me say it before gd3s have no place at le mans it will kill the class and the manufacturer is all very nice and gentlemanly now oh yes we'll play by the rules but when you've got the prestige of winning at le mans they will build special cars for le mans and it will send the costs skyrocketing skyrocketing and it will cause an issue well also the the uh architect or the founder of the gt3 category if you like stefan rotell he said exactly the same as you john that's his exact view on it um so yeah i think it's uh it's not not a one-size-fits-all thing [Music] it is uh seldom that stefan eye to eye on anything we've had some full and frank discussions about stuff i had a chat with him on the morning actually up from my motorcycle um he was on the end of a phone and i was talking to him whilst i was getting a little bit of wind therapy before going on duty uh i was out on the mighty 1600 gt and we were having a bit of a laugh about that between us but uh the other thing is i'm not sure the manufacturers really want it either um certainly i know a couple of manufacturers who don't it it possibly will happen it's not the it is not current gt3 i think that's what we've got to say the regulations are not current gt3 which is a full bop category there is an element more than a small element of a technical regulation set of regulations where you can look at a card see it's legal it's not legal but already they're talking about waivers for it and waivers if you're gonna have waivers you've got to know what they are you can't have three and four different sets of regulations that come out and the teams get one the series get another the press get another and the public get another that just doesn't work there's no transparency there really is not let's pick up a little bit of news from some of the cars that were involved in that big incident at turn six sun energy one emg gt3 was one of the cars there and that got the heart of racing got a club on the right rear and the sun energy car was in the wall as well joe bradley has been doing some detective work yeah i've just uh saw some of the crew turned back up at the big box and i asked is the car coming back and unfortunately the slash across the throne indication i asked is the driver all right and it was like yeah yeah driver's fine but that that mercedes took a big hit didn't it okay so heart racing and the the aston martin and the amg right down to andrew who has got the 48 ally cadillac right alongside him and jimmy johnson's getting in there andrew yes he is and i'm just trying to sprint up there because i've just come on the pit lane i've just seen a team working on the car and hopefully i can grab a couple of interviews in just a minute or two but literally i'm just on the lane now john thank you andrew jimmy johnson plugs in his air hose and the communications umbilical uh he is out adjusting the steering wheel getting himself sorted tightening the belts down before he gets out of the pit lane very efficient pit stop as you would expect from that team and the ally number 48 rolls out lara platman photographer and journalist extraordinaire says would you mind awfully asking the drivers not to call carnage while i go to sleep need a submarine at 9 00 a.m at uk time so that's nine eight seven six five four who'll be on there that'll be johnny and bruce he'll be on at the moment uh at that moment uh oh no it won't yes well yes it will be it'll be johnny and bruce who'll be on at that time at lara so send them uh a text when you get get back up when you've had your first cup of coffee zero one in the pit lane and uh andrew is just about there for that one that looks like full service of the driver change as well andrew yeah that's right john i just came into another pit i'm just climbing back over the wall as the car accelerates away so all the action down here and just at the wrong time i was fighting the wrong direction well the zero one cadillac on the way as well and jimmy johnson out onto the track now in the number 48. now this is not a new thing for jimmy uh of course we know of his exploits in nascar but it's not a new thing to race here at the rolex 24 took part in this race for the first time back in 2004 um so he has a lot of experience here as well he's come second twice in all five and oh eight but what can you do here he's certainly got some incredible teammates comey kobayashi mike rockin feller uh as well in that machine and of course jose maria lopez speaking of the uh of kamui kobayashi and jose maria lopez uh their teammates uh in the number seven car mike conway he's now in the number 31 whalen uh cadillac as well and up to second place share adam has just tweeted to us a picture of the full season porsche the 79 card still being worked on by the weathertech team so maybe they're going to try and get that car out that is the point scoring car for the full season meantime let's go down to 47 more the sport as the 48 car completes its first lap with jimmy johnson at the wheel in the 2022 over the next 24 hours so the number seven 47 motorsport car coming into place austin mccusker is the driver that's just got out who's took over from you austin uh mark kwame just took over right now so we'll see how he does hopefully well hopefully brings us um it's looking pretty hectic out there with the cautions and the restarts you've obviously managed to keep out of trouble uh i wish but uh we had a little bit of contact on pit lane and then uh we've had a throttle pressure sensor failure we're trying to get it fixed in the pit box boat and we had to bring it back to the garage under yellow at least it was under a yellow and we didn't lose that much time for as much time as we would have so we'll see if we could uh put our head down and gain some laps back the lmp3 class is a very tricky class to be driving in you you're not the fastest prototypes and the gt cars are all around and you kind of get a just slightly quicker lap time how do how tricky is the traffic to manage i mean we're fairly it depends on depends on where you are in your stand with tire wear you know i mean if you're early on on your skin the gtds are are fair a bit ways past it's uh easy to get by them we have a little bit of a straight line advantage there they have a little bit of a breaking advantage with abs so um yeah we're just got our spotter up in the stands helping us out guiding us the whole way through so just trying to stay clean austin you seem a little bit down but the guys around your crew are putting you on the back you've done a great job yeah i mean i'm just just down because uh we had a good car and you know we had a tpms failure or a throttle position sensor failure so uh yeah long way to go man tristan you're just down here you're looking remarkably fresh after that little section yeah it's nice and cold in that cadillac cockpit uh the cool weather is rough on tire warmer but uh pretty good on the driver cooling side but overall yeah great stint even after a quad i feel pretty fresh and ready to go again yeah because this race is just sort of finding a rhythm now isn't it yeah it's all about rhythm and it's so hard to keep that rhythm with all this traffic so it's really just about keeping keeping your head smart and making smart decisions you know not not dive bombing these slower gt cars and putting yourself out of the race because there's a lot of opportunities to do that yeah the 31 uh cadillac here from the weyland team you haven't had uh tire problems slightly too accurate yeah i think that's just about uh staying smart on your sense you know uh you know not collaborating the curves on the outlaps and and really just trying to stay out of the debris there's been a lot of debris from these uh from these accidents but yeah saying keeping our nose clean just throw it through it's the way to go is that something you really think about keeping off those curves yeah it's it's it's very easy when you're in the car to get to get too antsy you know you see a big group of traffic and you try to be too aggressive and you put yourself in a bad situation but you know the team's been in my ear the whole that whole quadruple stint just saying keep your nose clean smart decisions and when we got cleared curl up just you know go for the lifetime and uh that definitely helped me get through that quad congratulations good sting thank you good multiple stint for the guys uh for tristan nunes [Music] i think we can blame they wouldn't blame george bradley he was down there at 47 morning sport mark varmi just took the car out and threw it into the grass uh just coming out of turn five he's recovered very distinctive with the yellow marker lights on that car and he is again pointing in the right direction you're listening to insert ratio part of the radio show limited network of audio and visual channels we're live from daytona international speedway looking down from the hagerty global global broadcast booth on to now a dark it's full dark here at the speed we're well lit on the tri oval and with the muscular system around the track of course but the darkness at night means that the temperature on the track has started to fall it's gone down a couple of degrees in the last hour temperature in the air holding steady around about seven degrees celsius at the moment uh sirius xm two zero two and on imsa radio.com in sound and vision if you're in a territory that doesn't have any tv deal you can get the international fade if you want our audio it's there for everyone and no blocks or breaks there another racing hour starts right now just on 19 hours to go peter mccarthy has been watching the timing screens oh difficult times for the number 79 gtd pro weathertech porsche that car has been behind the wall alessio piccarello having to bring it in uh and the car hat looks like it's going back out again with cooper mcneil at the wheel but it's dropped a long way back and in a class as competitive as gtd pro issues like this are going to be really punishing but don't forget that is the point scoring championship full season championship card for kerma mcneil so he needs to get out there and just get some laps in that car the other car what the other car that he said declared in is now the rolex watch winning car for him uh and this is points make championship positions for him if you look at it that way around uh hello to steve i saw mcqueen's film in the 80s when i was about eight ever since then there's something about racing at night that fascinates me it's in some ways the sheer insanity of it the skill the endurance of both mana machine drawn to it like a moth to the headlights says steve i know exactly what you mean it's almost something illicit about racing in the dark even when it's as well lit as this it's almost like we shouldn't really be doing this don't tell anybody yes absolutely and hello to another tweet from the from col on the isle of lewis and the outer hebrides josh smith what a race so far a lot of action uh in the first five hours this could be another classic probably has been i think you're right there absolutely right hello to ian mccarthy uh that is who is listening in as well and uh spooner in orange what's the best internal light color these days is it the science or is it sponsor colored we call the hondas and btc knight racers were red the jimmy con johnson car is blue with his sponsors matches with these sponsor scheme coincidence but i think blue is is the one that they normally pick spooner if i'm actually uh honest about i've had a long chat many years ago peter and i were talking um actually i was talking last night with uh formula one journalist about mark webber and uh mark gave me chapter and verse about how much time they spent on the porsche 919 project of getting the right fluorescent colours on the right bits of the steering wheel and the right amount of black light or illumination so that you could see which dahlia at the twiddle and where it was without killing you killing your night vision particularly for le mans it's always much darker battle out on the circuit the number 48 ally cadillac we were mentioning that is jimmy johnson has got the number zero two kevin magnussen car right up his tailpipes as he goes through turn number one now down to the short shoot [Music] down to uh turn number five should i see it and jimmy johnson going down the inside of the era lmp car here comes magnuson round the outside into turn six this will be a brave maneuver and jimmy just eased slightly to the right there and said to kevin no thanks i think we'll be carrying on there's now kevin goes round the outside at turn five and heads into that position takes it so i was right the first time that was coming out of term one that does look different from the uh helicopter very different indeed so kevin magnussen and jimmy johnson battling for position number four with richard westbrook in cadillac number five that's the mustang sampling car in second mike conway world champion in the fire wac the 31 wheeling car and scott dixon multiple indycar champion out in the lead so scott dixon leads might come here from richard westbrook from kevin magnussen from jimmy johnson from ollie jarvis from will stevens that's a pretty stout septet isn't it just mull on that for a moment while joe bradley gives us some more from the pits i seem to be going through a sequence of lmp3 pit stops i'm watching in the 74 riley motorsport leash a bit and michael cooper has just brought the car in michael what what are you going to report to your engineer i know you've already you haven't had a chance to speak to him yet yeah just a little bit about how the car balances and what the track conditions are like right now you know my first uh stint weather tech you know just doing a single getting my feet wet and you know we'll uh do some more running later tonight are you happy with the balance you can tell them you're happy yeah yeah pretty much happy with the riley motorsports ranch resort number 74. so keep running here let me ask you a question okay if you weren't happy with the balance what so what sort of things can you be suggesting to the to the engineering what tools do you have in the toolbox to change it during the race i mean it's a tricky one i just tell them what the balance is and uh yeah let them do their thing and i do my job yeah that's a good point thanks michael i'll let you get uh i usually see at this point i'll let you cool off i'm now saying i'll let you warm up steam coming from him right right vanderzander he has just zipped up his cadillac racing jacket he's got his hood up and it's gonna be cold ringer yeah it's getting cold out here um i mean i'm having fun out there it's uh it's you know daytona is always a special one to start the season with and i'm feeling uh more comfortable than ever it's uh we have some nice speed in the car the crew is doing really really well so far it's it's still a long way to go i mean come on we're we're only five laps five hours in and there's so much risk out there if you if you cut through the traffic it's uh every every corner that you have to overtake someone you're relying so much on your spotters and then uh driving into the dark is also it's nice it's uh it was a proper florida sunset on the back straight you know so you had time to see that i was just cruising out there and having fun so yeah i was looking at that of course more cars in this race than for many years and it does make it really difficult doesn't it it really does it's uh it's something new you know for me but i've been here since 2014 but this is something new it's uh there's so many cars in front of you sometimes four wide sometimes three wide sometimes i feel there is no spotter on their car you know and then they they run you off the track if you don't uh back out of it but uh it's really judging risk at every overtake you do um got some great teammates here so um the car the cadillac is running smooth long time to go so no time for big risks yet but uh comfortable lead so far will you be able to sleep we're gonna have a little sleep now yeah for sure a big sleep hopefully and then uh getting back tomorrow probably in the car it's nice to be with four guys on the car um but i have to work a little less then so that's i i like to work work myself if we do well but uh i'm gonna get back in the car i guess um some very early morning or something like that i i think i was in there for three hours so that was a good stint and my teammates will do the same good stuff well done never get anything other than one hundred percent from wenger van der zander even when he's just racing for fun [Music] the gap the gap is coming down uh mike conway is in the groove right now the wheel of the number 31 whalen engineering cadillac that beautiful red and white machine of course mike coming off a superb 2021 season and uh winning le mans and the world championship but he's gonna have to do some he's gonna have to go some john to catch that number zero one chip ganassi car [Music] oh yeah i'm down with mike hull as the managing director of jeff ganassi racing we were speaking earlier in the week and he said two years ago when kovitz started you wondered if all this would be over for ganache racing and now he got mega programs he's been racing in the desert well yeah that's a great comment or a great observation um just great to be here with uh the old one and the o2 cadillac uh running really well obviously right now but a long way to go but having eight great athletes like we have driving the race cars and all these team members it's really fun to be here to race and this series is uh a terrific place to be now mike some of our listeners how long has it been how long has i i'm sorry how long have you been in racing alone me personally uh i'm almost dinosauric um live bait yeah like you um i i've been in motor racing for 60 years now around motor racing and you know i started racing cars when i was young and dumb and uh just lucky enough to be accepted and they got to stay yeah i think you've got four separate programs at ganassi racing is that right and do you attend all these different uh series yeah that's right i mean but it's a team you know it's not one person in motor racing as you know it's a group of people that work together and that's what creates the um [Music] the longevity of racing teams like jim ganassi's team uh you know we worked hard to build it block my block brick by brick and uh uh what people are seeing today here at uh daytona is is a result of that how hard we've worked to be where we are mike thanks very much he's being a little disingenuous to be honest because he's a guy that's put smoke so much of this together for chip he's a great player [Music] and every uh every good commander needs his lieutenants underneath him peter and when you look at roger penske with tim syndrick and you look at mike hall there with chip and you know you can go through all of those things down through through the years you've got to find the balance it's like getting the right guys in the car that work well together they don't all have to be exactly the same we're not talking about automata here we're talking about human breeds yeah that's when you look at the combinations over the past one of the most iconic combinations i would say at this race in our 60th anniversary was harley hayward and peter craig you know two quite different characters in many ways but two exceptional racing drivers but they just gelled they just fitted they understood each other they went about it in the right way and their win here back in 1973 um was was just incredible to win outright in the little porsche 911 rsr and it's great to have harley uh harley here as one of our grand marshals uh this weekend you've spotted hurley in the past i had the immense privilege to chat to harleyway he gave up over an hour of his time for for our interview and it was just that had a big smile on my face the whole interviewing for quite a while after he was is some fantastic stories and what a polite man as well i i i have spent quite a lot of time with them down through the years with the bramos connection and some of the stories that he comes out with but we've actually spent time talking about quite a lot of other things under the mortar racing which is really really interesting he's he's not a one-trick pony and he he's very interesting guy to talk to and his observations about uh what's going on in the world and all that sort of stuff but great guy to sit down have a glass of wine with let's go to heart of racing it's not been a a banner event for them so far with one of their cars already out of the running and ian james can talk a little bit about that and their hopes for their second car with andrew marriott yes indeed ian's down here with me yeah it's a game of two for you really the one car obviously out but the other one's going pretty strongly isn't it yeah i was unfortunate for the 23 car he got caught up in an incident with a mercedes uh who lost it going out turned six but yeah 27 cars going well we have a slight little uh little problem with it but we're soldiering on and uh keep pushing it's a problem uh we just got very slight misfire so we're losing a bit of top speed but uh balance is good and uh we'll keep trying you've increased this operation now in weathertech to two cars have you had to put a lot of extra personnel on and uh a lot more effort yeah yeah especially for this event you know where we're over 30 people now so it's uh yeah it's a big moving train logistics um logistics is the name of the game but everybody's done exceptionally well these last uh ten days and uh very sorry for everybody on the 23 car the mechanics and the drivers if you're another another brit who's come over to the usa to find your fortune in racing to time we go back to you racing formula palmer audi days and that was a long time ago and your father reggie of course terrific formula four and formula three racer but america seems to be the place to be well yeah i was one of the earlier adopters of america you know i i kind of uh i couldn't find the sponsorship to continue in europe so i decided to make the move here do sports car racing and i couldn't be happier you know got a great wife family and america was very good to me proud to be an american citizen now very good well team director but still racing too [Music] oh great guy you know that we are so so fortunate in sports car racing to have a paddock full of people who you'd sit down and have a drink with and you know could talk about racing could talk about anything there's uh there's far there's there's uh far worse places to be than in a sports car party particularly the imbs of paddock the international nature of this race peter you'll have noticed that this year just how many nationalities they are when you're walking around the paddock when you're getting fed it's the greasy italian boys behind you are chatting away over an espresso and you've got the michelin french technicians you've got the germans from bmw and and from emg in particular quite a lot of brits from all over the place in the uk and literally every regional accent there and that's before you start thinking about the scan norwegians and the antipodeans who are here and of course the local talent it's it's it's a great place to be it's it's a wonderful blend of talent and i think it says a lot of of what the rolex 24 hour is about and why it's so special and i think this is why i believe the announcement about the revival of the gtp moniker is so important for the future of vimsa because why is is this race special well because it's been going for 60 years and you have to think about how special it's been across that time gtp is the same and the fact that we're reviving that moniker is just it's just superb and i know that it means a lot to the drivers who uh who come along and take part david everyone is leading in gtt pro at the moment but this gap is coming down to dennis olsen in second ferrari for a gt3 lead from kcmg porsche in second 62 and two so we'll try and pick them out for you the next time they come past us on the start finish line and it's normally relatively easy to spot the ferrari as it uh howls past us and they're just going into turn six at the moment and on to the high banks so they are heading through speed with turn two now and down towards the breaking area for the new lemon chicken and in fact uh for the side-by-side action at that area with the g-drive lmp2 car one of the uh algar pro racing cars just getting in the way of scott dixon at the moment but only four a moment and a 62 on the banks on the far side let's see if we can pick them up because they were pretty close together and in fact is that the 62 heading to the pit lane followed in by no that's prototypes coming in literally all you can see is headlights [Music] looking at there goes the 62 over the start finish line now heading down into turn one davide regan hard on the brakes in the 488 gt3 with dennis olson in the white blue and black porsche 911 right behind so it came on in gtd pro but at the front of the field interestingly we talked it looked like mike conway was closing in scott dixon really really fast and the gap had got to about six seconds it's now all the way back up to sort of 10 or 11 seconds recently it looked like there was obviously a big pocket of traffic that scott dixon had to get through and that was what slowed his pace up a bit and then with mike conway same thing happened and it's kind of equalized out again what do you see john down at the western horseshoe the gap is down to nothing in the gtd pro leading battle dennis alton is right on the tail the reese's competition car they've eschewed any uh i think they probably think they're vulgar lights on a ferrari it would be like putting faster stripes on a ferrari wouldn't it you just don't do it the kcmg porsche easy to spot because it's got the uh very bright blue on it as it is closing in it's almost like the kcmg car fitting they've given their a team from hong kong it's almost like the hong kong skyline with all the the lights across the skyline interesting i think the reese's car has got a red uh a red light bar only on the left-hand side yes it has wow so i hadn't noticed that before as it came past us they're in the speedway has turned four at the moment and olson is getting a good run leader staying down on the law side there for davide regan underneath us yeah definitely only on the left hand side for that light mark aboard oh and olsen really putting the pressure now as well he got a great tool coming out of the yeah coming out of the lamont chicane and then getting that toe all the way around the super speedway so dennis is such a polite young man uh the spectacled norwegian like many drivers had a great single-seater career but the sheer colossal amounts of money required to to progress can i hold the single-seaters he found gt racing and porsche found him and he's driven for all of the top porsche customer teams and i had a great chat about with them about driving for the frickadeli team in germany and uh he really support it really with with a lot of heart about uh driving for that outfit and he's doing a great job for kcmg right now go to andrew at racy at the moment uh just watch what plays out here and a little bit of a stumble there for the kcmg car stood behind ironically the af course of ferrari so andrew was that gap has gone out again uh let's have a word with the resi team manager harry holland's down here and you know what he's making me a cup of tea gary this is so kind of it now you're right in the battle here isn't it but it's early days yeah very much um we've got a long way to go yet so um just going through going through the process now gary am i right you're setting up your own team as well in the future yeah it's great yeah tell us a bit about that uh victor sport lmp2 in imweck um early days yet but uh we've gone through our testing program and we're looking forward to getting going thanks all well thanks for the team mate and well fingers [Music] crossed thanks andrew that was a perfect time to get down there for andrew to get his chat and also for the w rig on driven car to just eek out a little more of a gap between himself and dennis alton we'll keep an eye on that as best we can as they come back to the line again allegra motorsports are back out on the circuit the number 28 car has come back from behind the wall so again early days in this particular fight but uh proof of proof were needed that there's plenty of plenty of spirit of endurance racing out there just after seven o'clock local time good to have you company thanks peter for the uh last couple of hours we'll see you a little bit later on and jeremy shaw will be back with us right now for the next few hours been sitting watching what was going on uh and whilst jeremy gets himself strapped back in uh let's hear from daniel sarah yeah well daniel's just uh playing with the uh trains tube with his crash helmet here daniel got a little bit of modification to do here i couldn't hear you but i'm just talking about you uh sorting out your crasher yeah i'm just trying to to fix the drink system here but everything is fine just waiting for my turn and your turn's going to be pretty important big battle going on with the porsches it's the same old story ferrari and porsche at the front so far so good i think it's still really early [Music] there is a lot of race to go but it seems good i'm an old friend of your father chico's actually and i've been very interested in how you've really got into sports car racing but you ever have any thoughts of following your dad into formula one yeah of course i start racing because of my father i try i had a few years in single shooters but then when i had the chance to to change and be professional and start racing gt cars i think it was a great opportunity and i did it absolutely in the car in a few minutes i think david has steal one more thing and then it's my turn excellent thanks very much that's uh daniel sarah thank you andrew just had the mustang sampling car in behind uh andrew that was the five car richard westbrook brought in the gdc miller motorsports run cadillac from fifth position from third sorry he's gone back out in fifth position only five cars now on the lead lap in dpi olly jarvis the first one off the lead lap we should be having the zero two kevin magnussen driven cadillac through any second now into the pit lane dragon speed and andretti have just come in the 81 lmp2 and the 36 andrei autosport leading lmp three car just checking with uh david rigon still leading dennis alton by about a second joe bradley what's going on at your end of the foot look i've just done the i've just had the 36 the andretti york sport car pretty pretty standard stuff tires fuel a driver hopped out try and get a wood well stevens trying to make up time after that uh offered turn one and the puncture that followed it [Music] zero two in on time now the car that looked red in the deer light looks much more of a copper color under the bright white lights andrew is down at that end of the pit lane but this looks fairly standard new set of michelin tires and i think and no i don't think that was a driver change andrew was it i don't believe it was i just got down to mustang sampling actually you don't just see your number they're having a quick look at the tyres that came off the car um so i was just still down in receipt but i don't think they changed driver did they down down here at mustang something no they definitely didn't and i don't think they did it this year or two ganassi pit as well we've had the 52 pr1 matheson car into the pit lane that was nicol lapierre coming in from second but anders fjord back him in in the high class number 20 from the lead and louis della tries for the number eight tower car still in fourth place so still challenging despite his problems early on but it is a lap away from the lmp2 lead battle kevin magnussen stays in the zero two chip ganassi car as mike conway is in in the number 31 wheel of engineering cadillac and where's he going oh there he is very dark down that end of the uh down that end of the cut lane now what nice what am i seeing that is a reflection on the window i must be getting a reflection from race control i think so pit stop times these are all absolutely on time jeremy aren't there they are indeed john yes so 22 laps since uh for each of those three cars have just been on the pit lane the number uh five car uh the the previous stint was 21 laps when richard westbrook took actually 21 laps it's actually a number five car 22 lap stint for the ganassi cars uh the o2 and the zero one which of course is still out there now and i don't expect that car to be on pit there for another five laps or so it's been a change in the gtd pro category because kcmg have inherited the lead with davide regan coming into the pit lane new set of michelin rubber for the pennzoil racy car looks like that the drop the tire changes finished they're just waiting on the fuel still going in on the left-hand side of the car doing a bit of cleanup of the lights and the windscreen and anything else they can shake a microfiber cloth up a little bit of spill almost catches the there was a touch there was a touch with the incoming number 15 emg mercedes from uh fourth position in the category uh and that is the weathertech car i'm pretty certain that was side to side touch oh i know it wasn't but only because of the really heads-up driving by both of those drivers the 15 car coming in has right of way of course it's about what would be called in formula one a unsafe relief [Music] very very very close indeed jimmy johnson into the pit lane andrew marriott is there so he is saying just taking a rip off from the front wind screen jimmy and definitely going to stay in the car look at what is going on four tires going on i noticed they're not sticking someone has scrubbed in time so many bright lights gone there's three purple bright lights on the roof and then there's also all the headlights the car is rubbing jimmy johnson wants to go hey jimmy he's the pit lane and daytona as he has done so many thousands of times before 21 lap stint for jimmy johnson so it's interesting to see the two cattle the chip ganassi cadillacs able to eke out a lot more than the uh number five car and the number 48 on that stick despite the fact that jimmy you know he's running a pretty good pace but he certainly slipped back from the contenders uh ahead of him he was only about three seconds behind the zero two car when he started uh well if he was overtaken by number two currently wasn't he and then he lost about 17 seconds over the course of the next dozen laps or so and still he needed a pit stop a lap earlier than some of these other contenders that's something we're going to keep an eye on it's got dixon in on lapper one seven from the left this is 21 laps did for scott dixon again that's kind of normal for for a driver on his first stint at the wheel of the car which is what that was uh for scott dixon scott dixon doing what scott dixon does as i seem to remember a number of people saying down through the uh couple of laps down for will stevens but they they're still in the fight a couple of weird pies then they'll be back in it andrew in that uh cunningham they're accurate yeah it's down here just getting fuel and the driver change down here new michelins being not bolted on and the fuel's still going in uh making sure the safety belt is being tightened up there and now it's off the jacks a little bit more fuel little attention [Music] uh also coming in during that uh well actually before i say that we had a spin for the team netherlands the jumbo car number 13. that was kuno in the decay [Music] that car off at the international horseshoe uh joe bradley has some of the front runners in gtd joel yeah 66 gritty and missing accurate kevin simpson has just brought the car in from third place in that class now that is by the end of the pit stop cycles it's mark mark miller who's jumped in the car and uh pretty standard but uh i've got to say that what i'm seeing is cars as they leave their pit box they are weaving down the pillar just try to get some heat into the tires from the very outside [Music] yeah i'm down here with double wheel just stepping out of the car there go will stevens in the acura wayne taylor racing well not a good stint will yeah i mean the first part was actually really good i felt comfortable in the car and then we managed to get to the front of the of the pack and then when i hit traffic into t1 the rear of the car came round and i don't know why because it was super strange to lose the car at that point so i need to look into why that actually happened and then from there on we're just trying to get back onto the lead lap and then see where we end up yeah early days um what's the entire flat spotted battle is that why you came change it yeah i mean it's it's really odd um as i say i don't know why that happened it's a really strange place to lose the car um so there was a lot of debris on tracks i don't know if we had a small uh issue with the rear left before that happened but yeah after that we just boxed but you said oh then we can get going so kevin simpson we just watched that pit stop you guys came in in third place so you're in contention at this stage for sure uh yeah i i didn't know where i was at the time i was just racing and uh just trying to do the best job i could um it was really tough racing some of those guys out there they're really quick so um with the way the cars handle and all the stuff that i'm not used to from racing other cars that it was quite difficult to get used to but it was a lot of fun so how much of a sprint is it what's the uh what's your engineer is he giving you a kind of a a time a lap time to go to or are you really pushing um he's not giving me time i'm just pushing as hard as i can to try to get us up there and uh he hasn't told me to save fuel or anything so it's just flat out as much as i can to try to get by these guys i've never met you before kevin what's your racing experience um i'm the afar america's champion of last year and this year i'm racing indie lights well that's formula regional for is that correct probably regional yeah formula regional americas this year and uh i'd race the full season and i also raised indie pro 2000. so that's um so that's a single-seater formula i believe yeah so this is a new venture for you in germany's racing yeah this is completely new for me um i've had a couple days in the car last year uh while doing the hpd gt3 academy which taught me a lot of what i need to learn no for this stuff so they they've helped me a lot for this race and preparing me kevin you've got to have a very selfish attitude in single-seat it's completely different sharing your car with t-bits how are you finding that um it's a little bit different um i've they've been mainly helping me out the most and uh it's a lot more like uh in single seaters like a coach would be for you and they've done a great job helping me out so i'm super grateful for them to be helping me what do you see in the distant future where's your ambitions what do you want to be in um i'm really hoping to get to indycar one day but uh future in sports cars would also be super fun and uh i've very much enjoyed this race so far but as of right now i would like to get to indycar but any any sports car opportunities i'd be very happy with we'd be happy to have you as well man well done thank you joe and andrew uh i mentioned a little while ago that the allegra number 28 was back on track what i can't remember jeremy and i don't do a few counties why did he call behind the wall in the first place the 28 car no i'd forgotten that as well i can't remember if it was accident damage or they had a technical problem the weathertech number 79 porsche had come out from behind the wall a little while ago but i'm afraid it's back in the pits and it looks like that under pit crew power well it would have to be it's been pushed backwards in the pit lane you're not allowed to reverse so that's going down to pit in to go back behind the wall now cooper mcneil has another seat to get himself a rolex winners watch indeed gtd pro in one of the two amg g e t gt's that are also uh entered under the weathertech banner but that is his full season point scoring car yeah 79 and only that car you could only score points for the season in one car jeremy yeah and he's uh it was he started the other car he started a 97 car didn't he normally the the car you drive first in the race is the car you score points in but uh i i do you but that's not the case right that's what i that was i was told that that was nominated we've got the 64 tgm porsche off the circuit and that is uh who's that in that car is that owen in the car yeah i think that might be his first stint yeah on he's first in the car it's at the international horseshoe he just got in the car right meantime a great battle not for class position but the battle of gtd pro continues after the pit stop dennis olson is now ahead of davide regan so it's the number two kcmg porsche on the pit stop cycle that leads i know i've said that no it must it must be because otherwise it'd be far too far behind so kcmg have done a great job it's a huge organization kcmg they've raised in all kinds of things including at world championship level in lmp2 nurburgring in various series in asia as well kc moored group is what kcmg stands for and if you don't believe me go and look them up [Music] faf porsche is in third position in gtt pro with matt campbell behind the wheel then she'll scoot on for mercedes 97 and jack hawks with for the number 14 lexus so dennis also david regal matt campbell just going on jack hawks with not a bad top five gtd it's russell ward back at the lead of the field in the windward mercedes so from paul back to the lead and we are full course yellow full course yellow for the tg m porsche in the wall oh and trinkler at the wheel and he just can't get that car back out of the barrier at turn five that gives us the opportunity to pick up some more interviews down in the pit lane we'll start with andre marriott the 22 you just heard the gibson engine powering the united auto sports car out and jim mcguire the gentleman driver really just stepped out of the car and will owen making his return to racing after two years stepped into it i'm gonna hop over the wall john in a moment and uh i'll bring you a willow in just give me a moment just over two hours jeremy's just mentioned to me of green flag cooler mcneil out of the weathertech porsche with a a blow out of air puffing out his cheeks and a little micro shake of the head [Music] he's talking to the team back in the garages more of them can work on the car there but this is uh not a good sign for this championship full championship entered car jeremy no it's not uh that's that's true hey look uh the we're only what 22 minutes away from a six-hour point in a race which is where uh points for the michelin endurance company handed out for the first time so uh this the timing of this caution is kind of interesting and see now you know who uh particularly likes the prototypes ops to come on to pit lane where for yeah most of the cars we're not too much into a stint they might want to stay out there to remain out front so that to get the points for mec because we're likely to be this caution is likely to be to take us up close to that six hour mark depending on how much you know how much the cleanup time is taken up by getting number 46 out of the way i think if the torch they might be oh and by bill drive it away uh andrew down in the pit lane andrew yeah i'm with jim mcguire jim just climbed out of the car gym we're used to seeing you in la at mp3 but lmp2 just a bit faster right oh just a bit faster i ran three of the races last year endurance with united it was fantastic this first daytona 24 to do it in the p2 is mind-blowing it's fantastic out there that's the 22 united aurica running at the moment uh pretty good you know we've had a few penalties that set us back on our heels but you know it's gonna be a long race we keep it clean we're clean so far and hope for a good outcome we've got some great teammates as well of course just a touch good to have guy smith back out here in the us again and obviously young superstar phil hanson and even get will owen back in the car it's really great to see everybody coming together and jim you do some great things behind the scenes for motor racing i know you helped jeremy shaw's organization bring young drivers from america to britain and so on absolutely i think that's a great thing the motorsport in the uk especially in britain is completely next level especially on the developmental side so when we can help these young gentlemen uh it's great and there's so many good ones i mean they're really showing themselves well we'll just give you a plug for your company aero because you really are at the cutting edge of paint i think you even do special paint for aeroplanes yeah yeah the aero aero is a you know it's a film solution for painting we're on many of the top teams and in imsa and you know in whack and elms and indycar we've won we've been on the last three years winning indy 500 cars so we're very proud of our technology thanks very much that's jim mcguire [Music] so jeremy who needs a stop not who wants to stop we finally got a full course yellow where people have a choice about coming in or not rather than being forced in for emergency service well this is great news for number 60 car because that was that was running a slightly different strategy having had that problem earlier on it had fallen a lap off the ultimate pace now it hasn't it's due a stop pretty soon but that will be able to say on the lead lap so excellent news for the number 60 car unfortunately for the number 10 which was two laps behind that made it stop his last stop only what five or six laps ago so he's not going to have an opportunity to gain one of those two laps back unless the other leaders in in um in uh dpi come in and i think it's probably unlikely that some of them will so i think it's probably going to say two laps down that's the uh the conica minolta car that's going for the fourth uh in uh yeah four five four five five four four athletic yes well yeah that's not about football not with what happened to bolton today uh thank you to hunter wolford who is enamored of our pit lane it's joe bradley and andrew murray in the pit lanes here adam will be backed out later on uh we've got the 64 porsche running again looks like he might have a flat left front jeremy now cause our effects if oh well you just come out of the pits i think so if uh he couldn't get that side turned maybe that was a problem he's it's all in trinkler at the wheel of the 64 porsche and after a great run the second position yesterday in the mission and pilot challenge he's touring back to the pit lane and the left front off that's a porsche 911
