hi i'm alex archbull and i've been buying and selling antiques since i was 9 years old from basements to scrap yards i'll look just about anywhere i can to find lost antiques and collectibles and sometimes i'll go big and buy everything with my wife and kids we run an antique shop in edmonton alberta canada filled with some of the most unique items we can find i never know what's going to happen or who i'm going to meet this is our life this is our adventure and this is curiosity inc from home honey [Music] this is what's happening today we found out that we have to add an insulation barrier frost barrier next to the foundation unfortunately it's so close to the wall that we can't get a proper size excavator really anything down there we're trying to get this done before the uh next week so we've been doing it by hand now stephen's taking over for me right now so i could do the video here holland is working away we're trying to get one more section we've done all the way around so far so i'd say we're about 60 or 70 of the way done getting this stuff in but in the meantime paul ends in over your back here and they're filling up the kids pool why are they filling a kid's pool well because we have pet geese apparently in the backyard who've been thirsty is all heck and uh we're gonna leave some water for them so they've got something to drink and swim in because there's not much for water in this neighborhood don't know why they're nesting here see look they're waiting right there for us to finish what we're doing and then just guarantee as soon as we walk away they're going to be in that water like a dirty shirt swimming around swimming all around depaul doesn't get in there first they've just discovered it they're poking their little beaks in there a big drink oh yeah they're happy they didn't jump in yet though oh i see a foot going up the foot's thinking about it the head's telling it it's in the water the foot's trying to swim wait for it like how long has this been here for they're really thirsty [Music] good morning everyone and welcome to today's episode well this is not a regular day for me i am taking this big truck while it's just a cube van all the way to saskatchewan which for me is a four-hour drive and it's all to go get some shelves for the new building which isn't even built yet at the time of this filming um why am i gonna go get these particular shelves well they're salvaged from an antique well from a historic store which is gonna be sold off soon and they need the shelves out of there it'll be perfect for what we needed for so to go on the trip today i've brought a special guest my son jason hello so jason and i are gonna head on a father-son road trip today go pick up some shelves so without further ado let's go get them [Music] we're about halfway there right now we're just pulling up to the saskatchewan border probably about the next 15 20 minutes or so supposed to be severe thunderstorms today but as of right now it's blue skies but if i look off to my right i can see there's some dark clouds rolling in told me we can get there and get this stuff loaded up before we get doused in rain it's not much fun loading up uh furniture and moving when it's pouring rain outside so far it's been a good trip lots of cows and lots of things to see out the windows lots of livestock exciting times for your kid i'm sure uh but yeah we'll probably have to pull over and get some gas pretty soon too jason do you know why i don't want you to ever go to the movies with a pirate what cause all they ever want to watch is our rated movies now entering the town of lloydminster the town which is on the border half of it is in alberta the other half in saskatchewan one of few towns built right on the border because you have your choice of where you want to live and jason's never been in saskatchewan my son jason has never been in saskatchewan before not that it's a tropical destination or anything but this will be the first time in moments we'll be crossing the border and it'll be the first time in his life he will have been here exciting that's the look of excitement saskatchewan bound b nerdy nerdy name saskatchewan bound mourinho internet look that's that should be their new theme song pretty soon jason uh i'd like to tell you that there's something really fun to do here uh other than loading up shelves we can maybe go harvest wheat later uh no okay hey look jason there's e.t laundry i guess he didn't go home after all he came to saskatchewan to start up a laundromat e.t fold clothes well we've made it to downtown north battleford not a whole lot going on down here but my employee sean says that this is his favorite place to go for uh specifically i think it's uh beef jerky so i'm gonna surprise him i'm gonna pick up some beef jerky form and for us too and bring back a little bit of home because this is where my employee sean is from shawn was uh raised in north battleford and so gonna bring him a little uh favorite snack is from his hometown here we made it inside they've got a good selection of all sorts of meats in here but this is what we came for the beef jerky based on sean's recommendation so bag for sean and a couple for home also got a couple little uh treats for chewy i guess better we get those and that's for a bigger dog i think smoked phones for dogs i don't know what chewie would do with himself if he got hold of one of those but we're gonna grab our jerky and hit the road thank you in smaller towns in canada i'm sure all over north america you can come to a small town you can spot where the old bank used to be because it's the fanciest darn building in town now it's not a bank any longer it looks like they've turned into offices but definitely has that early sort of uh you know 1900s edwardian kind of architecture really cool building unfortunately there's been lots of older historic buildings and spaces in between that are now empty and the space we're going to next um it's it's a freestanding building that used to have all sorts of great little shops next to it sadly they're not there anymore the building we've come to visit today see if i can get a little bit farther back from it here is about 100 years old or more it's about as old as my building except it's big this is a big block unfortunately it needs a lot of work and tlc uh and they are gonna be selling it at an unreserved auction the inside of the space is massive and what i wouldn't give to have a building this big for us to have our store in you can see it's got the original hardwood floors needs a little bit of tlc and the the brick walls a lot of potential but what we've come here for are these shelves oh yeah the original tin ceiling look at that that's exactly what i want to do in our new space is get that kind of detail in there really cool that's a lot of tin ceiling in here boy oh boy uh but what i what i came here for were these um complete antique shelves now they look really tall because well they kind of are right now they're about eight feet tall with the top on but the tops do come off uh we have to try and figure out where the sections start and end and get these loaded up in the back of the vehicle so you ready for this jason yeah you ready okay um we've got our handy dandy cart with us and i guess what we're gonna do is try and find as many good complete units in this building that they have and try to take the best ones we can so let's uh let's start looking so why drive four hours to pick up some old shelves it's recycling at its best and on top of that well it's gonna save me money in the long run these would be very expensive to build but when you go into the building and we have it done i want it to feel as though it's been there for a hundred years you get that effect by using the right kind of materials and the right kind of shelving shelves like this not necessarily easy to come by you have to find an old abandoned building like this it's got a minute so i think worth the trip i was able to get three units in the back so two that'll go together and then one will be freestanding that's exactly all i need actually so it worked out good i have a little bit extra space so i might stop see if there's maybe some antique stores or something around here why waste an empty truck right before we head out of town i don't know where jason went to where'd he go oh there he is before we head out of town jason's all into that beef jerky by the way how is it it's amazing he says um i don't know if they have for antique stores apparently this carpet store also sells antiques when you go check this out uh yeah they weren't kidding it's carpet flooring and antiques all in one building and we're going to have a little uh poke around and see what kind of stuff is here and see if there's anything worth bringing back home i like the giant uh red baron tri-plane that's pretty nifty as sort of an ornamental piece it's big enough a kid could almost sit on it well they did have a lot of interesting items but most of it in fact i think all of it was imported uh antiques that were more or less made to look like they're old um which isn't what i saw so i didn't buy anything but we're gonna hit the road start heading back home we still haven't seen these thunderstorms yet but uh the clouds are starting to shift and i feel like it's just a matter of time right now i'm a little bit worried that we're going to be offloading all these shelves in the middle of a rain storm the lucky so far on the highways we haven't had really any rain but i think that's about to change [Music] well after an incredibly long trip we're back at the store right and jason on a scale of one to ten what would you give the beef jerky uh 11. he gives an 11. we've we've come bearing gifts for sean is it jerky it is beef jerky um we've got our geese in front of us are we we're following the geese what does that mean i think they're running away from us right now the geese that live in my backyard for now anyway in the meantime let's go inside and give sean his gift hey it's sean and it's bob good jason has something for you sean's favorite beef jerky the all-time best b d meets beef jerky yes and uh jason gives it 11 out of 10. yeah it's incredible hey man yeah really really good uh so yeah i got to see your hometown yeah how was it oh well i mean next time i usually stop for gas on the highway next time i would go back through there's stuff to see there yeah yeah yeah the western development museum is cool yeah fun there was a lot of places that were shut down sadly yeah that's uh i mean you know that's both north battleford in a normal year and then a covered year yeah well we're gonna offload some shelves uh okay maybe possibly in a bit i think we're okay right now though we got them all down this is the top portion so it's got this sort of stepped art deco influenced wood really nice veneer on there nice detail all the way around and i made sure to get proper ends so they'll at least show nicer but we have to run out and get a tarp because well it's been raining all day and i don't want these to get rained on after all that work so we put them on board so the up off the ground is it this is an area that usually doesn't get wet anyway but we raise it up uh almost an inch there it will protect them put the ramp away go get a tarp come back cover them and we'll be nearing the end of the day okay everything is tarped up and covered and we missed the rain thankfully they stayed dry i had to stop and fill up the vehicle the van the rental van and it has incredible range we got there which was a four hour trip or roughly uh 400 kilometers basically a little over on half a tank of gas now i'm not saying that means this thing's really fuel efficient cost 150 bucks to fill out i think this thing is like all fuel tank all the way through so uh i do have to return it full i'm not really looking forward to what that bill is going to be um at the end of the day i think those shelves had cost me probably about a thousand bucks but again to recreate them or pay somebody to make that type of shelves uh would probably be three to five thousand dollars at least um probably like two to three thousand dollars per unit or more so actually probably more like six to eight thousand bucks um so i think it was worthwhile overall and i think it will give the store a really great look um had a lot of help from jason that guy right there yeah as i poked towards your face did you have fun today yeah okay what was your favorite part uh the beef jerky okay jason is a big fan of the beef jerky so to b d meets in saskatchewan and uh in north battleford uh well done you uh you make a fine jerky good sir uh and for us we're gonna go return the vehicle and go home so thanks for watching guys i hope you all have a wonderful evening uh i'm tired i'm sure jason's tired just gonna be probably good sleep tonight we'll see y'all very soon bye for now [Music] okay so now it's time to see what chewie thinks of the stuff from b d means he seems pretty excited i think it's chewy approved too you
