welcome to our slash malicious compliance where we share stories of people conforming to the letter but not the spirit of a request and the first story is the time I cost the owner's son his job and possibly ownership of his family's company so I work in sales for a family owned business a large family owned business but nonetheless owned by one family I've been with this business for quite some time many years in fact now it's important to describe my pay plan obviously I don't want to give too much info as I don't want the company identified the pay plan is a base salary plus Commission plus accelerators for going over objective the company is divided into regions which is overseen by a senior VP and those regions are divided into markets which are overseen by a VP and the markets are divided into teams which are overseen by a manager and then within those teams you've got territories which are assigned to sales reps sales objectives are decided by the big boys at the top and those objectives are then cut into smaller chunks and handed down the line I've worked my way up and got one of the best markets a sales rep can have in my company the reason for this is because my territory which I call a market is geographically isolated from other parts of our company and has about enough business for 1.5 salespeople problem being it's awfully hard to hire half a person so I get the benefit of getting an objective that's quite easy to meet and which naturally results in me making a very healthy living and I'm quite happy with this arrangement also our employment contract with the company which is also our commission agreement clearly states and has for many years that our sales objectives rises and falls based upon the number of salespeople in our market so if we hire a sales person that sales person takes a little bit of the objective away from everyone else if a sales person quits until that role is fulfilled objective goes up for everyone also we get bonuses for going over objective and at the biggest bonus mark we double our Commission's now the owner of my company apparently told his son if his son wants to run this company one day his son needs to successfully work all the support level jobs for at least six months that's on the admin side and be successful at each level of the sales side for two years each if the son is successful at that the reins in control of the company will be given to the son start January 1st 20-19 the son becomes my sales manager for his first of two years this is sales manager early in the year he sits down with me and basically asks me what I expect to do for business I tell him all most likely finish at around 130 to 140 percent of objective for the year he tells me he thinks he can double the sales if he hires a new sales person I explained to him that I don't see how that'd be possible and that if he hired a sales person sure the company might sell a bit more product but they'll also be paying an additional salary and we'll end up paying more out in commission far more than what it would be worth he tells me that's none of my concern and that if I can commit to doubling my sales which is a ridiculous ask considering I've grown this market a great deal already but he's going to put in another sales rep I tell him that's his decision to make but he should consult with the VP first to see if that's a wise move obviously since you're reading this we can all guess what happened he hired another salesperson to give me a bit of competition I promptly ensured my objective was cut in half if this smart a ivy-league-educated Silverspoon child is going to make my life a bit more difficult then I'm gonna get paid more shortly after all this went down in the month of January 2019 I was speaking to my VP and I reminded him that if I didn't secure a single additional order for the entire year with my objective being cut in half I was at a hundred and eight percent of objective based upon business that I had carried over the year prior my VP smiled and said it sounds like you're going to make a ton of money and this new manager is going to eff up his payroll budget keep in mind had this not have happened my previous year business would have only gotten me to fifty four percent of my yearly objective I started the year two percent away from my first Commission accelerator I knew that 2019 would be my biggest money-making year ever and I was going to effing blow it out of the water I went back and looked at my sales for the year and here is how my year went end of January I was at 38% of my objective for the year into February I was at 74% of my objective for the year end of March I was at 109 percent of my objective for the year and the vapor line was at 149 percent of my objective and for the first time in my many years of being with this company hit maxed my first and second level accelerators I was now earning 130 percent commission end of May I was at 175 percent of my objective and it maxed out my third level accelerate and was into my fourth and was now earning a hundred and fifty percent commission June 202 percent of my yearly objective I had officially hit the max accelerator and was now earning two hundred percent commission for the rest of the year this was going to be the case June was also my mid-year review to my surprise the owner attended my mid-year review and it was all positive I was doing a fantastic job and there was a lot of talk about how much I was earning and would earn to which the owner said I've never seen a sales rep get to two hundred percent commission as fast as you I smiled and said I know it's a great year he asked me how do you think my son is doing as a manager now to be fair I was very experienced and very rarely needed my Sales Manager and the son had been doing the job that he was supposed to be doing and I smiled and said your son is the best thing to ever happen to me I've never made so much money with this company I love it the owner smirked and said I'm sure you are very happy with him and I was giving a good review later on in a private conversation with my VP my VP admitted that the owner was effing furious because our region's payroll budget was going to be blown out of the water because of not only the decision his son made in regards to my market but other markets as well and that sales overall hadn't increased as much as the cost of payroll had increased and for the first time in our company history there was a good chance our market would actually end up with a net loss of profit due to the increased cost of payroll apparently the son had increased the size of all teams under his control with the thought being more salespeople more sales but didn't factor in the cost back to my sales July 218 percent I went on vacation kinda regret this should have canceled the vacation and sold more August two hundred and forty-one percent September two hundred and seventy-four percent October three hundred and one percent November three hundred and nineteen percent December three hundred and thirty-one percent the year was over in total I had sold about 17 percent more than what I had expected the extra money was a motivator for me and I had banked a ton more money let's say I no longer have a mortgage payment because of 2019 I did lose some business to the new rep who really struggled so here we sit in January of 2020 I now have a new sales manager for some reason the son isn't in charge anymore wonder why the sales rep that we had hired to compete against me was actually a very good sales rap but he didn't make what he wanted and we transferred him to another market and apparently we let go of a lot of the excess hires or old employees had quit and we're back down to the same amount of salespeople as we had started 2019 with my objective is back to where it was in 2018 and I expect to make significantly less than I did in 2019 but it is what it is the rumor is that the Sun is not working in any official capacity with the business and the owner his dad is debating the next step for his son and yes our region for the first time in our company history posted an overall loss after everything was said and done and it's been attributed to the increase in payroll costs due to veteran sales reps benefiting from a lower objective due to the increased sales staff I did send an email to the sons company email address it was returned saying that email is no longer in service the second story is I went without my phone for nine months first time posting here but I think this fits my mom would take away my phone his punishment when I was 13 or so I got it when I got my first job because it was a 20 minute bus ride away she would say to do X or else I would or wouldn't do it and eventually my phone would be taken away for a couple of days it didn't matter if I did it because she would use the same threat the next day so eventually I'd give up she would go a couple weeks before using it as the threat after giving my phone back but it was their only solution when I was fifteen I was sick of this pattern so I bought a $30 safe put my phone in there and slept in the next day I handed over the safe and she couldn't give me my phone back unless I wondered it too I refused to do some things like going to church and babysitting and she couldn't make me I refused to communicate with her through other people's phones as well so if I was staying at school for leadership she would have to find someone to watch the kids so she could walk over I mean I wasn't allowed on phones right my family was really annoyed that they couldn't contact me but my mother was trying to be stubborn my mother had never seen me be determined to do anything before and she thought she could outlast me by month - everyone was begging my mother to give me my phone back older siblings grandparents ed to communicate through her but she was getting annoyed by month 4 she was basically begging me to take my phone back she promised she got the point but I didn't think she did yet I still had control so I just refused to unlock the safe my relatives were annoyed I was being stubborn seeing that she offered to give it back but this the hill I was going to die on so I ignored them all besides had I learned the lesson yet eventually after nine months of it being locked in a safe I took my phone back and started using it again I spent nine months without a phone and even though it made some things inconvenient it was much worse for everyone around me my mom never even threatened to take my phone away again I was a decent kid who helped a lot and did good in school but sometimes you just don't want to do everything you're told to so you tolerate the punishments she still takes away Tech from my little bros but they're younger and do stuff that kind of deserves it story for another day or another subreddit but she didn't try and force me to do stuff after this and the last story is how a polar bear got the kernel arrested as you may know hunting and fishing is very big in Alaska I don't hunt and am a very occasional as in a few times only Fisher what's important to me and a very large portion of the hunting community is conservation efforts I've always believed in consume what you take and strictly adhere to conservation policies limits species etc Alaskan outdoorsmen are very knowledgeable of these rules and regulations and with good reason the Fish and Wildlife Service is always watching and it's very quick to levy huge fines and even imprisonment for outdoorsmen not following the strict policies outdoorsmen are also highly encouraged to report offending personnel in order to assist with compliance efforts this story takes place about 15 years ago so all people here have likely moved to retired we had built a new center in Alaska for the Army in the old center there was a very large and imposing taxidermy display polar swiping at a seal when I say large I mean a polar bear that was at least 12 feet long he was on all fours in a display that was about 16 feet by 8 feet by 6 feet it was a massive display of a polar bear that was taken prior to the ban in 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act the army wanted this display in the new center but since it was so large we had to leave it in the old center until the very last days I did routine inspections of the new center at least twice a year where I would meet up with the head civilian I love my trips to Alaska because it was such a beautiful place it should be noted that at that time my big big boss was at the Pentagon and his last name was very unique let's just call him Colonel polar bear on one particular inspection about three days after the new center has been built I noted that some new policy was coming down from Colonel polar bears office that would affect all of our installations the civilian kind of grumbled it smirked then said ok I could sense that he was irritated but I didn't know why I found out later why from one of the motor pool technicians the civilians here were guard / reservists who were a uniformed one weekend a month and also were Alaskan residents who had been in the state for many years the uniformed personnel in charge of the facility and units were active duty and consisted of personnel from all around the country the motorpool tech told me that prior to Colonel polar-bear getting his lofty position he was the active duty commander of the units here he was not from Alaska and he was not liked at all he was racist sexist and constantly berated all those lower ranking than him in one particular instance he yelled at a female noncommissioned officer who was having trouble doing push-ups he shouted you know why you can't do them it's because your T's are too effing big in front of all the soldiers so Colonel Polar Bear was actually the commander at the time when we were finished building and were transitioning to our new center the old center had been earmarked for demolition which could not proceed until the final pieces removed that's right the affirmation polar bear display unfortunately we had no place to put it due to the size well thankfully Colonel polar bear offered up his big house close by where he gets stored in the interim he had the civilian workers carefully move it to an army truck and then carefully roll it into his house well there was just one issue not only could you not hunter shoot a polar bear in Alaska since the very early 70s you cannot display them in a private residence without a license Colonel polar bear not being from Alaska apparently did not know this rule after the truck and workers left the house Fish and Wildlife officers arrived within hours to arrest Colonel polar bear they placed him in handcuffs and walked him out of his house in view of all this was thanks to an anonymous call after all Alaskan outdoorsmen have to follow the rules after Colonel polar bear was released he promptly called a mandatory meeting for all active and guard / reserve personnel to attend in formation and in uniform as everyone stood at attention red-faced Colonel polar bear yelled that he wanted to know immediately who had reported in to Fish & Wildlife as the motorpool tech told me you could hear a pin drop this went on for about 10 minutes until everyone was excused eventually the polar bear display was placed in the large entrance to the NewsCenter unfortunately I can't find any pictures of it online I never did find out who is the one they called Fish and Wildlife thank you for watching see you in the next video
