welcome to r/m malicious compliance where we share stories of people conforming to the letter but not the spirit of a request thank you friends for subscribing to the channel and for so many likes the first story challenged parking rule meticulously followed gained overtime caused corporate change one over Karen the Second Story replaced by lazy co-workers meticulously documented their failures and watched the chaotic printer room disaster unfold on my last day the third story I offered help with scales declined she failed scales test due to rejecting assistance and the first story is your bike has to be parked correctly in the garage and if you need to take out other bikes to park yours you have to park them back correctly too okay until recently I used to work part-time for a delivery company that uses half pedal powered half battery powered six- wheeel bikes that work like little semi trucks so after every shift we have to park the bikes in the garage technically there are designated spots in the garage for each individual bike but since people don't finish their shifts and come back in the exact time sequence that the bikes have to be parked in in practice nobody actually Parks the bikes there at the correct spot the first person back just parks at the back even if their bike is supposed to be parked further up front and the next person to return parks in front of the first Park bike and so on the shift managers know about it and are cool with it they work in the garage so they understand but new Karen from corporate who just joined a couple days ago did not she came in Suddenly at the end of one day to check things out and found that my bike was parked at the very front I had finished last that day because I had a super long shift but Karen called me immediately and chewed me out on the phone and essentially told me in no Pleasant terms the title of the post I called my shift manager right after and informed him he said something like well technically she is right so we can't oppose her directly I suggest you just ignore her I doubt she'll be back to check well my Petty a did not want to let Karen have this win over me so I did exactly what she told me to do I waited a couple more days until I got another Mega shift I arrived early to claim the bike that was technically designated to be parked at the very back you can already see where this is going after finishing my route I specifically drove back slowly to make sure I would be the last one back once back I took out every single bike in the garage by myself then I parked my bike and took my sweet time making Mak sure it was parked perfectly centrally and between the lines as well not just lengthwise you can see how that would take a long time since the bikes work like semi-trucks in movement mechanism so it took me D near 10 minutes to take care of one bike I had only 59 more to go I meticulously parked every single bike at their correct spots until the dead of night that day my shift manager caught on to my plan soon and chose to turn a blind eye since I was technically following orders from higher ups I booked 6 hours of overtime that day before I clocked out and was scheduled for a whole lot of payment next morning accounts suddenly called me to ask if I had forgotten to clock out and come back later to do it because it showed that I clocked out around 6 hours later than everyone else I told them exactly what happened and suggested that they watch the security camera feed inside the garage to make sure that I was actually working the entire time they eventually folded and told me to not do it again I politely declined and said that I'll do the same thing again next day because these were my orders they said our managerial team will contact you with updated instructions soon follow those instructions I said okay I received a slack message from Ken later that day before starting my shift saying I should follow my shift manager's directions to park my bike from now on so I did the exact same thing again that day because shift manager did say that technically the bikes were supposed to be parked in their designated spots had the same conversation next morning with accounts and received another slack message from Karen saying I should park my bike according to what made sense realistic Al I'm still gloating over my w over corporate Karen to this day the next story is laid off and replaced by two lazy privileged waffles I used to be in charge of the printer room in a rather large company we shipped an sh ton of product every day and everything shipped had to have the accompanying printed label and documents nothing can even be loaded onto the truck without this paperwork now this was in the olden days of the 9s so we had seven massive 4ft tall dot matrix printers that did all the work these printers were temperamental bees and if the paper jammed the printer did not automatically Stop Printing it would just keep pushing and jamming more and more paper into the machine until if left untended it would break down running the printer room was a two-person job when I started I trained for two full weeks with the two current printer room employees one was being promoted I was replacing him it was a rough F in two weeks let me tell you getting the hang of the job the various things you had to learn to do Etc one thing that made it even more complicated was the fact that each printer had its own personality with its own problems another was the fact that a problem in one printer could have a different fix than the exact same problem in another the job would be quiet for 45 minutes straight during which we did routine maintenance and such but was really slow and quiet and restful because this company processed its shipping orders in batches once an hour and then boy on the hour every hour the batch of orders would go through and thousands and thousands of orders would come spitting out now if you were on top of things and kept everything running smoothly the orders would print out very neatly and quickly but if you didn't know what you were doing if you didn't maintain things just right you'd get a backup and things would go to sh very very fast and when one machine went down you had to fix it fast before the next one jammed because guaranteed those machines would jam up multiple times on every batch print job so I've been working the print room for several months and things were great then my coworker gave his 2 weeks notice we tried to train my replacement but he was incredibly lazy and got fired fairly a few days days after the end of his training which left me in the printer room alone then the bosses informed me that my position is being phased out and I'm going to be replaced by two employees transferred from a different department so not only am I losing this job but I have to train my Replacements and I desperately needed a good recommendation from this company so I couldn't just quit or half a it I quickly learned that both of these transfers are lazy and useless they'd been with the company for decades had friends in the head office and knew their jobs were safe I'd show them how to do something and they' flat out laugh and say yeah I'm not doing that every day I'd be trying to train them and they would ignore me chat with each other leave to go sit in the cafe leaving me to do a two-person job alone luckily I was good enough to handle the workload but it was annoying mindful of the fact that I needed a reference of this company I kept extensive notes on each day's progress I clearly documented every single instance of The Replacements refusing to learn even listen to my instructions I also followed up daily with my direct supervisor and he knew what was going on on and my notes went into the company files and were passed up the line despite my scathing reports head office did nothing now it's my last day this is the day the training process assigned for letting the newbies work alone with no help or supervision allowed to see how well they handled the job and the pressure I was in writing forbidden to help them or answer any questions as I expected things fell to sh pretty much immediately minutes into the first batch of orders one of the biggest printers jammed and the clueless teas had no idea how to fix the printer Jam because they ignored me every time I tried to show them how so they turned to me and demanded I fix things I'm sitting on a desk coffee in one hand an apple in the other and smile and say yeah I'm not doing that so one of them is yelling at me while the other is basically thumping uselessly on the printer like a gorilla that just found a candy machine then a second printer jams paper starts spilling out of the back of the first printer which if you knew the job was really really really bad warning sign well I'm going to the cafeteria good luck I say as I stand up as I'm leaving I hear a third printer Crunch and jam up I went to my supervisor and let him know what was happening he said he not only expected as much he had predicted so repeatedly to his superiors he once again specifically forbade me from offering any help so I went to the cafeteria and read my book for a little over an hour then my supervisor comes to me to let me know what happened the entire printer room is down every single printer either jammed up or actually broken the company is losing thousands of dollars every single minute one of the shipper and receiving superiors finds me all in a panic begging me to get the orders printed sorry I'm not allowed to do that I replied now several people are running around outside the cafeteria all in a panic running from place to place to figure out why they don't have any shipping orders the chaos took hours to resolve and I wasn't allowed to fix the problems anytime someone started giving me a hard time my supervisor would intervene and show the memo from the bosses stating that I was forbidden to help in the printer room that day I spent my entire entire last day at work drinking coffee chatting with co-workers and reading my book the whole Fiasco ended up costing the company tens of thousands of dollars edit sadly at my company the lesson of the day was always nepotism like open and Frank nepotism they stated openly that hiring preference is given to family members of existing employees there were entire clans of family members working there each of whom would automatically support their other family members in an issue the two Replacements I tried to train were closely related to several upper muckety mucks to combat favoritism managers wouldn't be allowed to manage their own family but they did know how to talk to each other and make all promote yours if you promote mine deals again all out in the open no attempt to hide this Behavior it made for an interesting work environment to be certain the third story is don't want me to help you learn your scales all right this happened a bit over a year ago in senior year of high school I was The Unofficial percussion section leader in our school's Wind Ensemble I say unofficial because while I only played Mallet instruments vibraphone marima glocken Spiel Etc I had the most musical experience in the group for reference I'm currently taking a Bachelor's in music at University whereas the other three students were mostly taking the class for Arts credits that's the most bragging I'll do from here on out I swear every semester our band director had us do scale tests where we would memorize all 12 major scales by memory and he'd randomly select two for us to play since I was on mallets band director had me teach the rest of the sections the scales now if you've ever played percussion in a large Ensemble especially a high school one you know that you can get ignored a lot the band director an amazing man mind you focused on teaching all the wind players we had no strings rip who could read notes how to play the scales he trusted me to show the drummers every note on the keyboards because they could read rhythms but not so much on pitches so that they would be able to pass the tests every day I would patiently show the three of them how to play the scale of the week and for for the most part it paid off the most experienced guy could somewhat read notes and he practiced really hard to memorize the scales which he had learned the previous year but forgotten understandable have a nice day the other two a boy and a girl were newer and they were a bit slower but they still made an effort to learn the eight seven if you want to get technical notes each week the girl was difficult whenever I'd offer her advice or correct her on the notes she'd dismiss me and say something along the lines of I got this while still screwing up and making the same mistake I'm no teacher but I feel like I was doing my best to be gentle coming by when I saw her struggling and backing off when I got the signal to do so one day during scales practice I'm going around and checking up on our group since I know the scales already duh when I approach new girl to try and help to her credit I might have said something a little nitpicky like that the notes should be equal rhythmic length but that didn't excuse what followed she looked up from the keys and said in the most bratty voice you know what op why don't you just leave me alone and worry about yourself okay from then on I heed a request every morning thereafter I would only help the two guys with their scales when we would get a new scale I would only show these two What notes they would need to learn and let Miss F off look them up herself band directly barely paid mind to our section during scale practice so he didn't notice her struggling she must have had enough false confidence or didn't care because to my knowledge she never reached out to anyone for help when scale test came band director had us all go one at a time I had no trouble this sh is my second language veteran guy played the scales near perfectly having practiced so hard I was really proud of him newer guy made a few mistakes but did well enough to pass you did good buddy ice queen walks over to the MAA and the bee will not look up from the keys to meet the band director's eyes he picks the scales for her to play she takes a full 9 seconds I counted def find the starting note and proceeds to play the most creative interpretation of a single octave E major scale I've ever heard I don't remember exactly which one it was but I'm pretty sure it was one with a couple of Sharps it was almost like she was trying to write a 12 tone row on the spot band director gives an uncomfortable smile and picks the next scale repeat is similar modal mess to the first one needless to say the band director failed her did I forget to mention that the scale test was worth 50% of our grade fun fact I forgot to mention this but in arpeggio was included in the test scale up scale down then play the arpeggiated chord thank you for watching don't forget to
