welcome to our /aa don't work here lady where we share stories about folks that are mistaken for employees by irate customers and the first story is I'm not an interpreter literally happened earlier this evening my roommate gets home and gets himself a shower after work he's trying to unwind and having a conversation with me in ASL I noticed he starts acting a bit off being epileptic myself I start to suspect but not sure I ask if he's feeling all right and he says he feels weird and suddenly full-blown seizure this roommate does not have a history of seizures so I immediately get my boyfriend to dial nine-one-one and ask for paramedics meanwhile I'm putting on my hearing aids and getting my shoes on as by this time I've already moved things that could hurt him away from him prior the paramedics come I grab the roommates keys and drive his car to the hospital I get there and check in as a guest with the guests sticker to slap beautifully across my chest I get let in and told where his room is blah blah if you've ever visited someone in hospital you know the general gist of getting to the person's room so I'm sitting there wearing my hearing aids so now I could potentially have a conversation without the need for signing but I'm signing anyway I'm just more comfortable that way he in turn signs what he can the nurse comes in and checks on him and make sure he's got everything he needs for the time being making sure he's comfortable etc informs him someone will be coming by from radiology soon enough yup someone from radiology shows up with a wheelchair helps him into the chair and carts him away him signing I'll be back all Terminator like so I'm sitting there in his room just waiting when the nurse returns to the roommate las' room nurse something something something patients something something interpreter me no thanks roommate doesn't need an interpreter wrong answer that's apparently not what she asked she looked more frustrated in her face her eye brows furrowed me now trying my hardest to lip-read someone I can barely make anything out from nurse something something another patient something sign language interpreters something something's something can't something something one patient all the time something something something me I'm not an ASL interpreter and I don't work for the hospital I'm here for room eight nurse something something needs interpreter now something something going me I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say I'm deaf I'm not an interpreter nurse is now getting furious but storms off and I'm thinking I've heard the end of it my roommate is returned after what felt like an eternity and we're chatting back and forth again with sign apparently the nurse had made a complaint about me as suddenly and without warning the charge nurse is in the room and my roommate is signing everything the charge nurse is being at me about charge nurse you need to get off your Duff and help other patients that need a sign language interpreter you can't be sitting here dedicating yourself to one single patient you will be called back to this patient if he needs something important spoken to him roommate calm signing speaking while signing he's not an interpreter he's my deaf roommate I'm interpreting what you're saying to him and trying to enjoy my conversation with him the charge nurse goes white as a ghost but the word deaf seems to have fallen on deaf ears charge nurse well can I at least help with translation so other hearing-impaired patients can be treated again roommate is signing everything to me i chime in vocally me ma'am I'm deaf I can't hear you I can't make out what you're saying unless someone translates it for me so how would it be possible for me to translate what's being said to other deaf people currently in the hospital I don't work here you don't pay me and I can't hear worth addi to do what you're requesting charge nurse again well you could still help out don't you sign interpreters have some sort of oath you have to follow my roommate tells the woman the mere fact that you're confusing a deaf person for a sign language interpreter and demanding a deaf person interpret language he can't hear is honestly quite effing frightening in a hospital environment do you realize how terrifying that kind of Sh is me doesn't surprise me this is the same hospital that had a nurse asked if I wanted my discharge papers in Braille roommate that was this hospital by this point the charge nurse seems to have gotten the picture and profuse Lee apologizes to my roommate not to me though be and scampers away not to be seen again the doctor eventually comes in and goes over the details with roommate that nothing appeared amiss in his brain scan and everything looks alright but told him to stop taking a medication he was on I didn't catch the name of the Med apparently this medicine can rarely cause seizures and today was the second day of having taken said medicine so it made sense just basically drink plenty of fluids don't go to work the next few days so the meds clear out of your system and get plenty of rest and make sure you're in a safe area in case of random seizure until you're clear is hu not the doctor looks directly at me and tells me I can go to another patient now I effing hate this hospital if I had to spare finances to blow I definitely get those various t-shirts off Amazon that read I'm deaf and varying degrees of that so that I can avoid Shi like this again in the future un-freakin'-believable to make matters more infuriating is this is the same doctor at the same hospital that told me that deaf people can't speak don't get sick in small towns you never know how idiotic hospital staff are I drove my roommate home in his car he protested because you are epileptic you could have a seizure at any time and I said right now so are you but I'm medicated for it the second story is he was wearing headphones sir he has autism all names in some details have been changed to protect the innocent last night Oscar and I were talking about the incident I had with a Karen at the local store last year and now his former coworker lila saved me before the situation got worse he had his own story to share and has granted me permission to post it here cast Oscar manager Joseph helpful guest stocking shelves penny Joseph's mom Jorge jerk a customer back before he joined the company we both now work for Oscar was doing his rounds around the department store II worked at talking to customers and employees and making sure everything was running smoothly it was a slower than usual Monday so Oscar was able to enjoy a stroll he came upon a teenage guest reorganizing the stuffed animals and making everything look neat under the supervision of his mom Oscar noticed the guest was wearing noise cancelling headphones Oscar thank you so much for making everything look neat you've got an eye for detail penny a bit embarrassed he likes to organize and clean up as it helps calm him when he gets overstimulated I can get him to stop if it's being a problem Oscar nodding my son does the same thing and as long as it helps him then you're more than welcome to to Joseph you're doing a great job he left Oscar decided to get some paper work done when they heard a loud clattering and a cry Oscar ran back to see this huge man who looked like he had eaten one Thanksgiving dinner too many and his button-up shirt was about ready to bust open standing over Joseph Joseph had his hands over his ears now sans headphones and looking like a proverbial deer in the headlights the guest was pointing at him George now that you aren't listening to your music are you gonna help me penny walked up to him penny sir my son is not an employee and he has autism George looks at penny with narrowed eyes don't lie he was wearing headphones realizing the situation needed to be de-escalated Oscar walked up customer-service smile on his face although he was seething inside Oscar may I you sir George notices Oscar thank god you're here you really need to tell your employees here points at Joseph and Penny to not wear headphones on the job and to stop covering for each other I can't believe that you hire insert seven-letter insult that begins with an r ends with an S and is considered the best way to get your a kicked at least six ways to Sunday in all 50 states now the important thing to know about Oscar is this well he's a kind man who will give you the last dollar in his pocket if you needed it he really doesn't take kindly to someone being treated badly especially if it's a person with disabilities as his younger son has autism Oscar looks the customer down with the dad glare sir I'm gonna have to ask you to watch your language and your actions I can verify that these are a pair of guests and that he was rearranging the shelves because he wanted to and even if they did work here that doesn't give you the right to harass them just then a security guard walked over apparently attracted by the commotion George went from tomato red to bedsheet white Oscar turn back to penny Oscar if you want to press charges we can help you with that penny crying at this point no I think it would be best if we just left Oscar okay if you think that is best George now realizing that this would be the best time to leave walked away Oscar picked up the headphones and returned it to Joseph penny hug Joseph penny thank you sir Oscar you're welcome I apologize that ya didn't do that is there anything I can do to make the situation better penny no but we greatly appreciate it Oscar I'll let the staff know to watch out for that man and if there's any problems don't hesitate to contact us George never stepped into the store again from then on Joseph and Penny would come into the department store to say hello and organize the shelves every Monday with Oscar occasionally bringing out some extra toys for Joseph to put away if he wanted the third story is the attack of the burger Karen so this didn't happen to me it happened to my friend but I will be telling it in a first-person view like he told me so a little backstory my friend works at a restaurant I won't say the name of it though I'm sure some of you will try to guess what it is the cook had a bad attitude and disrespected my friend a bunch so my friend quit and found another job at a different restaurant he is friends with a couple of the waiters though meet the cast Karen poor kid me my friend manager waiter slash friend of mine on to the story so this was either a Friday or Saturday and I wasn't working that day but decided to visit my friends and have some lunch know this was around 1:00 after he quit his job there and gone to a more autistic friendly place so in walks the Karen talking to poor kid who looks maybe 15 now I was talking to a friend who was on a lunch break with me and the entitled mom and poor kids sat down at a table about three feet away from ours but his in eyesight the other waiters are busy helping and serving other customers their food they were in their spots for maybe four minutes and the Karen started to complain about how long the service was taking and that we should have had our order taken as soon as we got here then she spots us sitting down eating and stands up and does some kind of an army march towards us and then stares down at me I'm guessing trying to intimidate me Karen why aren't you taking our orders and you shouldn't be eating on the job it's unprofessional me umm I don't work here Karen don't you lie to me I saw you here last week taking orders waiter excuse me but you don't need to yell he really doesn't work Karen interrupts I'm not talking to you you lazy racial slur me whoa okay lady you need to calm down Karen don't you tell me what to do I am the paying customer and I won't allow your lazy ways to corrupt my daughter into thinking she can be a lazy racial and homophobic slurs like you you're not even in your work clothes how unprofessional poor kid looks like she wants to disappear me lady I don't work here anymore go back to your table and wait to be served or leave and eat somewhere else just leave us alone you're disturbing us and others around you Karen I'll have you fired for treating me like this me you know what go ahead Karen don't you talk to me like that young man manager comes out hearing all the commotion and walks over to our table manager what's going on here who is yelling waiter this lady is Karen interrupts again they threatened me and my daughter and called us horrible names fake cries I want them fired for treating us like this waiter wait what that's so not true manager well Opie here doesn't even work here anymore he quit last week Karen yeah right I bet you're just covering for him I want him fired from here right now poor kid then walks up poor kid mom just stop this is why I hate going places with you this is my dad is divorcing you Karen goes quiet poor kid let's just go I want to go back to Dad's house now Karen okay they left after that and I'm not sure what happened after but Wow the last story is you are signing you must be an interpreter I am a verbal deaf person as I was not born deaf but due to some reason I have lost more and more of my hearing over the years because of my level of hearing loss I wear hearing aids and have taken to learning ASL from my cousin who is deaf however my ASL is atrocious to say the least a few years ago I was sitting outside the Disability Support office at my college waiting for my appointment and using Skype to talk to my cousin in an attempt to get better at ASL and sending messages when I didn't understand him at the time I was not wearing my hearing aids as I didn't want to waste my batteries anyone who uses hearing aids knows how expensive batteries can be for context I was wearing flip-flops gym shorts and a muscle shirt so I looked like a student not like an employee of the school while waiting some woman walks up and starts trying to talk to me so I end my call and put in my hearing aid and see what she wants she shall be called Sarah me hi did you need something from me Sarah yes our interpreter is late she pointed to a group of teens can we borrow you from the school for a bit so we can start the tour me oh I'm not an interpreter I'm a student Sarah of course you're an interpreter here at the disability Center and signing so hurry up and help us being as I don't want to miss my appointment I agree to help her and walk over to the group of teens she needed help with and signed badly this lady thinks I'm an interpreter because I can sign are any of you verbal a girl from the group lacy looks absolutely horrified and signed sorry and that she is verbal before talking to the lady lacy Sarah he's a student not interpreter Sarah well then why was he signing lacy I sign does that make me an interpreter Sarah no but your student this continued for a few minutes until the actual interpreter showed up looking for them as they were in the wrong building I walked off and was luckily just in time for my appointment I told my support officer about the incident and apparently that was the third time that week she did that to a student PSA not all people who sign are
