welcome to our slash I don't work here lady where we share stories about folks that go into other businesses and have irate customers mistake them for employees and the first insane story is atomic Karen this happened yesterday evening as I was shopping for wine at the local liquor store still very fresh in my mind though I think I may have left out some of the swearing for a little background I'm not young anymore my beard and I know what I'm doing here demeanor lead to people often asking me for help or directions or whatever almost regardless of where I happen to be it happens to me at the liquor store more than anywhere else but usually only when I am there helping my mom or dad shop for wine this particular day I was on my own shopping only for myself and as I didn't need to talk to anyone I was wearing my headphones I normally wear my headphones as I am autistic and noise can really bother me at times they're big bulky earphones that cover my whole ear and have very good noise-canceling Bowers & Wilkins p9 signature premiere if anyone is curious not cheap but yes I consider them worth every penny normally when I wear my headphones no one bothers me people see I can't hear them and just leave me be so I generally expect no one will be trying to talk to me and assume people talking near me are talking to someone else all that said I o'clock this Karen walking around the store with a sour look on her face I want to talk to your manager hairdo in atomic blonde we'll call her atomic Karen a Kay for short I noticed atomic Karen looking at some cheap white wine as I was grabbing a couple of bottles of stronger 'el aged charred really nice bottle for not too expensive for anyone who likes cool climate whites I don't hear much through my headphones but I heard a bit of Karen call as I passed her I shot her a raised eyebrow look as I kept walking acknowledging her at all may have been a mistake I wasn't really paying her attention but I was aware she was in my space so I moved along a little faster thinking I was just in her way I hear a faint hey again the call of a wild Karen again I'm ignoring her as I move over to the section where they keep the general list sparkling wine grab a couple bottles of cava just as I'm putting the bottles in my cart I'm suddenly aware someone is way too close to me and suddenly my old school rap music is replaced with the din of the store as my headphones go careening off my head to the ground I wheel around having been fully absorbed by my decision of whether I wanted actual champagne or just some cava for an upcoming family event but now this interaction was already turned up to 11 my headphones are clattering across the ground they had made a loud smashing noise on impact and the battery had flown out my ears were ringing from the impact atomic Karen was already laying into me atomic Karen idiot that serves you right ignoring customers you need to stop ignoring me and help me right now me what atomic Karen you heard me idiot help me now me whoa calm down why are you yelling why did you hit me atomic Karen you deserved it you were ignoring me me lady I don't work here atomic Karen yes you do now come help me before I get you fired where's your manager I want to speak to him about your incompetence you can't treat me this way Do You Know Who I am at this point a crowd has gathered including some employees and a pair of police officers if you're wondering how police got there so fast well they were already there just outside the door they were getting some homeless people to move as they have been hanging out in front of the doors begging for change I won't pass them on my way in they had come inside to investigate atomic Karen's screeching it was at this point where the initial shock of being hit in the head for literally no reason was starting to wear off and I was suddenly realizing my headphones might be broken they're beefy designed cast aluminum and leather but there's still a delicate set of electronics I start looking around the ground for where the pieces that were not still attached to me by cord had gone apparently this was a huge insult to atomic Karen because she slapped me and shouted atomic Karen pay attention when I talk to you you want another one she raised her hand to strike me again and was surprised by a firm hand on her wrist her rage was about to be turned on whoever just grabbed her atomic Karen don't you dare touch me you little piece of s who do you think you are she raised her other arm to hit her assailant as she wheeled on him but he interrupted her tirade as she realized who had her arm police officer ma'am I'm officer redacted you are under arrest for assault and disorderly conduct unless you want to add resisting arrest I suggest you cease your tantrum and come with me well this quieted her right her tone immediately went from one of angry demanding to one of contrite mewling atomic Karen oh no you see this man assaulted me he tried to rape me police officer we'll see what happened when we checked the security footage ma'am but as of this moment you are under arrest now are we going to have a problem here atomic Karen went with the police and was put in the back of the cruiser while the other officer took my statement I was calm surprisingly calm all things considered or at least not combative so I wasn't placed in cuffs after checking the security footage it was clear that she had assaulted me for no discernible reason unfortunately my headphones were indeed damaged and the part that holds the batteries in was nowhere to be found so as it turned out this story isn't over I was told I could sue her for the value of the headphones if she wasn't willing to pay for them when I talked to her so lonely sitting cuffed in the squad car it went roughly like this me lady you broke my headphones and a piece is missing now you're gonna have to replace them atomic Karen whatever how much do your sh headphones cost anyway me they're a thousand dollars plus tax atomic Karen what you're crazy I'm not paying for that fu fu fu so that's it for today I'm suing a lady for replacement headphones in small claims court the officer told me that with the police report to back up my claim it's pretty much guaranteed that she'd have to pay in the end but for now I am Sol on the headphones and it may take a year or more before the court date I don't know when it will be yet but I am for sure not letting this go in the meantime atomic Karen is being charged with felony assault and disorderly conduct the cop said I probably won't have to testify against her as with the video evidence she'll probably just plead guilty the second story is Karen makes assumptions grabs a veteran who has PTSD ends up bruised and arrested some background before I start I am in my 30s have a bit of gray in my beard and regularly wear my hair in a ponytail I retired from the military and after a lifetime of being a noncommissioned officer apparently have an air of I know what I'm doing even when I clearly do not know what I'm doing add to this that my primary job is horse training for dressage so I tend to dress up a bit due to the nature of my clientele what this means is that it is very common for me to be wearing slacks a button-down shirt and away code I get mistaken his management fairly often though greater than 90% of the time the people I'm interacting with simply apologize and go on their merry way every once in a while it goes much worse this happened about three weeks ago I had had to have one of the rescue horses euthanized due to an injury that his emaciated body simply couldn't recover from and this happened about a month after my elderly mayor who was the best horse I've ever had the honor of knowing had passed due to age suffice it to say I was in a funk but needs must so off to the market I went for dinner supplies as I am browsing the shelves looking for an item I can no longer recall I hear someone clear their throat in the obvious give me your attention way assuming that I am in the way of their buggy I step closer to the shelves without looking up hew a second louder throat clearing I make the mistake of glancing in the direction of the sound what I see is a stereotypical Karen standing behind her buggy arms crossed and looking at me very disapprovingly while I don't recall exactly what was said through the entirety of our interaction a good portion of it is burned into my memory I'm me she's kafir Karen obviously Karen now you acknowledge me I've been standing here for 10 minutes me rather clueless huh Karen you gonna help me or not me well given how rude you're being when we've just met I would rather not Karen how dare you speak to a customer like that what's wrong with you at this point I briefly worry that she is one of my new clients of the stable but quickly decide that if she is then I can stand losing her me still thinking she might be a new client but knowing that I always let them all know to address concerns at the stable directly or via my professional phone number I'm not working at the moment so if you've got a problem just leave me a message or swing by the office tomorrow Karen this needs to be addressed right now unsure of the exact wording here but this was the gist of it me well I doubt that she proceeds to prattle on about a rude employee who wouldn't get her some item and how it was no wonder since management was the same way this is the point where I finally clue in me I believe you're mistaken as I do not work here Karen I don't care if you're on break you're the manager do your job me slowly and deliberately I did not say I was on break I said that I do not work here Karen yes you do but you won't for long give me a regional managers number right now me laughing right I'll get right on that for you sawed-off she sputters about rudeness and how loyal a customer she is etc etc I reiterate one last time that I don't work there decide that whatever I was looking for is probably unnecessary and turned to walk away this is where she screws up big-time after multiple combat tours I don't deal well with large public spaces as it is an ideal even less well with being pushed grabbed pulled or other very sudden actions directed at me she comes up behind me grabs my right shoulder and attempts to turn me around I know she was talking slash yelling at the time but I don't know what she was saying out of reflex upon feeling the pull on my shoulder I rotate my arm around her strapped her hand with my other hand and step through while pulling this puts her face first on the floor and I've got her arm levered behind her with my knee on her back as soon as I became aware maybe two seconds after the initial grab I let go step back and figure I'm screwed she starts bawling about my breaking her arm it wasn't there was no actual damage to her except a bruise where her face hit the floor which causes an employee to come running he asks if she is okay and what happened she screams about how she was just asking for help and I grabbed her and threw her down he looks at me he knows me because this is near my home and I am there weakly and I tell him to get a manager and to call the police the shift manager arrives before the employee can even take two steps and asks what happened as this manager knows me very well I teach his daughter to ride and we hang out fairly often he hears what she says and responds with when the police get here they can review the security video then asks the employee to escort me to the manager's office until the police arrive at this point I'm figuring that I am well and truly buggered about ten minutes later still waiting for the police to arrive I hear a commotion Karen slams the door open and proceeds to scream at me at the top of her lungs the first thought in my head was well I'm done I stand up square my shoulders and turn on my sergeant voice me quiet you ragged see you assaulted me you grabbed me and pulled me I didn't survive three tours of combat just to be treated like trash in a supermarket is that how you treat all the people around you or just the ones you think are below you because they work in a place like this at this point she is silent and has gone full deer-in-the-headlights like a private who just got off the bus at basic training I continued not noticing that there are now two police officers nearby nothing gives you the right to treat people like trash let alone put your grubby hands on them you've probably gotten away with it before it's just your sodding luck to have put your hands on a veteran with PTSD this time now sit the F down and don't open your sea holster until someone asks you to she sits quickly and quietly the officers enter the room fully and I sit back down one of them takes her out of the office the other closes the door and asked me for my version of what happened after I finish he steps out confers with his partner then they speak to the manager and toddle off to watch the security video a few minutes later they walk back in the office I assume I'm to be arrested so I turn about and put my hands behind my back because I do not want to give them any reason to view me as a threat they then ask if I want to press charges I turn around see that they have her in cuffs they explain that when they came out from seeing the video she verbally assaulted one of them then spit in his face when he told her that she could not press charges because she was the aggressor they were arresting her for assaulting the officer and wanted to know if I wanted to press charges for her assault on me I was tired I was hungry and I just wanted to go home I told them as much and they left my buddy the manager came in after that and gave me a ride home because I was really in no shape to be driving hope you enjoyed these crazy I don't work here lady stories and
