[Music] it's over Anakin I have The High Ground you underestimate my power don't try it [Applause] [Music] the 2000s marked a period of great prosperity for Star Wars games such abundance brought with it the occasional bad eggs but that hardly put a damper on the insane lineup spanning the entire decade we're talking Classics like Jedi Outcast in 2002 Jedi Academy and cotour in 2003 Battlefront 1 in 2004 followed by Battlefront 2 Lego Fring Star Wars in 2005 empired war in '06 and forz and Leash two years later oh my God I'm going to unleash the force myself but if you manage to stop and look a bit closer there is one more gem sandwich right between these Giants Star Wars episode 3 Revenge of the Sith the game this official Tian for episode 3 released on May the 5th 2005 a full 2 weeks before the US premiere of the movie well that seems is like a great idea the first time I've ever laid My Eyes Upon This Jewel was over at a friend's house who just got back from visiting family in Vietnam and brought this technological Marvel with him since nothing was unlocked yet we just played the versus mode over and over and it was amazing needless to say it wasn't long before I got the game myself and had the time of my life for living my favorite movie and more being pretty much a direct adaptation of the film Revenge of the Sith was arguably the most confined of the 2000s Bunch the same single player campaign consists of 17 levels spanning the entire plot of the movie some story beats are broken up into multiple stages While others are condensed or emitted entirely we take control of either Anakin or Obi-Wan as they go through their respective arcs with the other often present as an AI companion the first three levels cover the journey to rescuing Palpatine while gradually introducing the mechanics essentially a Revenge of the Sith is a hacking slash that turns into a fighting game whenever you face a saber equi foe you got your standard light and heavy attacks as well as grabs and shunts which are essentially a form of pairing in addition to that each character gets two Force Powers the first of which is same for everybody while the second differs based on their allegiance finally you can perform charged up and critical attacks that take a lot of time and forc to execute but have a devastating effect and you can throw your lightsaber and run really fast there's a lot of stuff okay both Anakin and Obi-Wan collect experience in the campaign stages and you can upgrade their abilities at the end of each one as a kid I always dumped all my XP into Force healing first because I was quite bad levels are made up of varying combat scenarios usually fighting waves of enemies interspersed with little mini games where we cut through doors or used the force in some way and sections are occasionally topped off with a mini boss every now and then you get the coveted boss stage featuring The Many duels present in the film the first boss is of course Count Dooku I remember we took turns trying to beat this level and it just seemed impossible back then and I got to say playing it now the AI is still pretty Relentless [ __ ] no piece of [ __ ] ah yes excellent for man oh well thank you Emperor I mean Chancellor [ __ ] he's really kicking my [Music] ass oh oh Baby that brings me back that's the one thing that's been missing in my life the Anakin shril of Agony anyway with Dooku disposed of it's on to the general Obi-Wan is really upset we woke him up because he's straight up refusing to help me ah but that's okay the chancellor seems to be taking the brunt of it I guess the dark side really is a pathway to many abilities some may consider unnatural somehow Palpatine one thing I noticed when I replayed the game as an adult was how cohesive it is the production value really shows everything from the menus to the cutcenes and locations really sells the experience the visuals are a little dated Obi-Wan looks like a nutcracker in some scenes but the art director ction and especially the atmosphere hold up surprisingly well the models can pull off some impressive acting too just look at Anakin here that's genuine anger what I find especially noteworthy is how the game manages to deviate from the story in a natural manner some of that is owed to the studio repurposing scenes and designs that were developed for the film but ended up on The Cutting Room floor I love the writing as well it carries that same type of humor and cheesy overtones present in the film and it's not afraid to just really dial it up when the moment calls for it that is not within the Chancellor's power only the Jedi Council can authorize access back in story mode General Kenobi travels to udow in pursuit of Grievous one strange turet POV section and two annoying mini bosses later we finally get to face the elusive cyborg himself he's really throwing me around [ __ ] o I think I would enjoy that my back is uh pretty stiff after dealing with Grievous we switch over to Anakin who walks in on Mace Windu about to execute cidus disturbed by the lack of judicial procedure and definitely nothing else Anakin confronts Wu and a fight ensues mace is able to hold his own for a while but alas the Jedi Master is no match for Anakin's rage and he succumbs to the effects of being killed what have I done what that's a ttal shift he seemed pretty committed a few seconds ago speaking of committing this is where the real fun begins the game dedicates three full levels to Anakin's involvement in order 66 storming the Jedi Temple and assassinating the separatist leaders on Mustafar all of which happens mostly offscreen in the film is realized in extensive detail here although sadly you don't get to do all the work you're going to have to download the uh the movie D mod for oh man that's not good hey no need to worry though this version of Anakin is still very evil and boy is it a blast to play through we also get two new characters in these sections the Padawan sakito and her master synic who does actually appear in the film and is based on the stunt coordinator Nick Gillard who also did Consulting for this game oh that's cold oh no look at his smug face meanwhile obiwan is betrayed by his troops and narrowly escapes death he makes his way through utaba fighting an array of a clone enemies and eventually faces off with a gunship in the following stage we return to Anakin as he finalizes negotiations with the remaining separatist leaders I love how if you die drink the boss it starts you off with the separatists again it's like a little consolation prize in the meantime Obi-Wan and Yoda returned to the Jedi Temple to change the beacon signal and warn the remaining Jedi the time this is not for my demise attacking the Clone what an astute observation Master you're mine yes sir the pair eventually reached the beacon and Obi-Wan learns of Anakin's fall to the dark side All That Remains now is the final confrontation on Mustafar let me tell you I spent like an hour playing this part always losing by a few hits in the very last screen and when I finally beat it the first time I forgot to record because I went to get [Music] lunch eventually I learned you can just juggle your opponent against a wall and the game doesn't really have a counter to it in the end Anakin is defeated and deed and the campaign finally concludes n I'm just [ __ ] around you know I couldn't leave out the most iconic level of the game I'm of course talking about the alternate ending where you get to play the faithful duel s Anakin I'm just going to let you see for yourself [Music] excellent work my Apprentice there are none left to oppose us the Galaxy is ours now your new weapon Lord [Music] Vader no the Galaxy belongs to me completing the story you're left with a bunch of unlocks for the other modes the first category are the bonus levels featuring some of the most unique experiences in the game stage one lets you play as the magnaguards fighting waves of clones on uow the droids have some really cool animations and attacks but they take a long time to move and finish their combos leaving them vulnerable to Blaster fire safe to say I did not finish this one level two features Grievous making his Escape feding off more clone troopers and finally Obi-Wan himself there's nothing really special about this one you can play as Grievous in the versus mode and these are all reused assets but it's an okay stage speaking of reused assets the following stage takes place on Mustafar and sees Anakin overcome a mixture of platforming and combat encounters be careful not to fall into the deadly lava below the second to last level has you control Master Yoda defending against a barrage of clones in the temple this was always a particular favorite of mine and I really wanted to play as Yoda in the versus mode my guess is they originally had a move set for him as he is fully functional here but due to the size difference he was ultimately scrapped from dueling it does suck we couldn't get Yoda versus Palpatine though the fifth and final bonus stage is none other than the Vader and Kenobi duel from episode 4 it's the most straightforward of the bunch but also the only one featuring entirely new assets and characters there are also a handful of Co-op levels fairly standard Arenas where you battle waves of enemies with a friend or computer this is the requisite little brother mode since not every sibling is happy to get demolished in versus over and over and these levels are fairly easy last but not least we have dueling I love this one for last intentionally as it is the other main draw of this game and likely the most interesting part of its Legacy even though the game is local multiplayer by Design nowadays you can use park to play online and there's a dedicated community that even holds tournaments for the game regardless of how you play you can pick from a roster of nine characters all which can have an alternate costume each has a unique move set and while some are likely better than others every fighter has something going for them the system is surprisingly deep for the game's scope and I have not even come close to mastering it my favorite aspect of dueling has to be the trash tog though every character has a bunch of lines with different criteria to trigger and I don't know it's so simple but it adds another dimension to the fantasy not to mention being plain fun you've shown me one thing I better stay in shape the student will become the master I taught you better than Miss I destroy which one of those buttons calls for help I will th you down the this game is so neat so many fun details that enrich The Experience like when you fight Sarah you can hear the Holograms reciting the Jedi Code Jedi I shall not know or when Ben Kenobi gets to low Health he does the pose there's just so much love and care for Star Wars in this movie TI game one of the reasons why I wanted to make this video and why I hold this game and its contemporaries in such high regard is the state in which Star Wars finds itself these days when I look back at the media that was coming out back then I see a lot more freedom a stronger vision and a clear focus on bringing something new to the table even if only because the creators thought it could be fun more interesting and guess what it is it's fun to play as the bad guys it's fun to have alternate endings it's fun seeing what the world might have looked like before and after the movies and it's really fun to toss [ __ ] around with the force ever since Disney bought Star Wars everything has to be on brand almost if they're following a guide or recipe that says this is Star Wars and it needs to be made this way to remain Star Wars but that only proves they don't understand it at all you can hit George for plethora reasons but he was never one to stagnate and while the prequels have issues they also so have a creative Integrity to them that Disney has repeatedly failed to deliver on honestly I just wish Star Wars loosened up a bit give us more this and this and hell even that not this please hey thanks for watching hope you like the video I knew I'd cover this one at some point and I'm glad I finally got to it definitely do give it a try I highly recommend it and if you really like what I'm cooking you can always support my work on patreon like all these wonderful folks are already do that's it here are some more videos and May the force be with you
