[Music] fulfill your [Music] destiny welcome back to Retro Rebound in today's video we are going back to Star Wars episode 3 Revenge of the Sith okay okay I know we've done a prequel games retrospective we also did a dedicated remembering the episode 3 video games video I promise you third times the charm this is the last episode 3 video I may ever do so enjoy it while it's here today we're talking about Revenge of the Sith on PS2 and DS because over on retro rewind we're going to be finally watching Revenge of the Sith my favorite ever Star Wars movie when I thought of retro rewind this was one of the first movies that came to mind and of course with the older Star Wars movies coming out in the theaters it's a good time in the month of May to be talking a lot of Star Wars and we've done a lot we talked about Phantom Menace we talked about clone wars and we're here at the end of the trilogy with Revenge of the Sith I just want to thank all of you real quick for allowing us to do this there are certain games that we've had to avoid in the past like Phantom Menace and like clone wars and I'm going to be honest the numbers speak for themselves these are videos we make knowing that there's a pretty good chance they don't end up doing Gang Busters for us but because of your your support on patreon we can still go ahead and try it out anyway so to those of you who got involved and have been helping us out we've officially reached the one month Mark here with our patreon running both rewind and rebound it couldn't have gone any better so thank you to those of you who supported us it really does make a difference as YouTube ad Revenue declines and we get to make what we want to make here so we hope you've enjoyed all the Star Wars content let's get into episode 3 Revenge of the Sith these are some of my favorite ever tie-in movie games we actually have a right in over on our patreon patreon.com retr revive where Stog sets us up perfectly saying that the Revenge of the Sith game for PS2 is so good and surprisingly holds up well in 2024 I love trying to master that game as a youngster and perfect combos on every level I especially love the Jedi Tempo level for reasons the local multiplayer saber dual mode was also super fun man what a great game and that's exactly the perfect way to set us up here because this game holds up exquisitly well in 2024 it's unbelievable from animations to combat to game design to unlocks we're going to go through it all revenge of the ass at face value looks like oh just a good movie tie in game but the amount of unlocks you get bonus missions maps to unlock in the Dual mode Secrets tied into this game it's really really dense there's a lot to do here so we're going to go through all of it but what I want to start off with is not the story not the unlocks but the combat the combat in this game still is remarkable in my opinion it's that PS2 energy beat him up that you know and love now for those of you who are like me and happen to be Movie tie-in game connoisseurs Revenge of the Sith may feel a little familiar that's because if you played games like Lord of the Rings The Two Towers and Lord of the Rings Return of the King you'll recognize that when you're punching in combos in those games and as you're ramping up and hitting more and more enemies you'll see Fair good great perfect and when you're hitting all those perfects you're going to rank up a ton at the end of the level we'll get into that in a moment in Revenge of the Sith it's the same thing now as a diard Star Wars fan as a kid this was definitely one of the best things that could happen to me because I love Lord of the Rings no doubt about it but I do have more love for Star Wars so to take a lot of those systems that we saw in The Lord of the Rings games and put them over here in the best Star Wars tie-in game we got so far oh I was over the moon I loved rerunning these levels trying to get the best ratings as stew dog did it was an incredible feeling because it was all these things that I loved falling into the perfect places now at the end of each level like I mentioned you're going to have experience based on the ranking you get for your Combos and you could spend these on new moves that you can use against enemies as well as force abilities that you can upgrade like there's a lot here one thing that really stood out to me when we playing this game is the animations are still silky smooth like the way you do side flips and back flips and get around the level it's not perfect like facial animations and cut scenes for example are extremely stiff as you'd expect in a 2005 PS2 game but there's in my opinion no denying that this game still looks really good like Anakin's blocking animation where he's holding the lightsaber up over his head just everyone's personalities and how they use their Sabers are captured wonderfully well even at this point in technology where we didn't really have like full motion capture we didn't have all that exactly down which you come to expect nowadays you see this is a game that makes you feel a little warm and fuzzy on the inside there was an innocence to this type of game because when you look at that early 2000s era people of my generation and older will know that it was a dime a dozen you didn't really get a good tie-in game almost ever in fact superhero games tie-in games they were very easily pumped for cash constantly if you haven't watched retro rebound you've seen me cover dozens of examples and there's many we have yet to get into like I haven't talked about some of the original Hulk games and whatnot there's so many tie-in games I played some of the Wolverine games so many that were just like pump and dumps pretty much so to get something this good not just on PS2 but we'll talk about the DS version was a thing of beauty you know one thing I also like is the game is a little tough you're going to see your boy getting roughed up a little bit don't worry we came out on the other side Victorious but there was a bit of a learning curve a lot of blocking and this is especially shining in the one-on-one boss fights which we'll then get into the multiplayer mode from there but I got to say like the duels in this game especially with the music again the animations holds up super well like why is this so awesome even to this day but the difficulty does add something and especially when we talk about the DS version the way the mechanics are design and how simple yet effective it is it's just from top to bottom such a a wonderful challenge too which you don't really get nowadays you have those moments of playing that game as a kid it's the most difficult thing ever and you come back as a young adult or adult and you go oh wow I was just really bad as a kid but this is one of those experiences where you go back and think Hey kid me was doing pretty good here cuz this is still kind of tough so we mentioned it a lot the dels there's a multiplayer mode and as you progress through the game's single player story you're going to unlock new maps you're going to unlock new characters that you can play as in this mode so yeah these one-on-one dels aren't just there for the flash of the main story there are actually secret characters you can even unlock throughout the entirety of the game and this roster is super interesting you'll get The Usual Suspects that you would expect in an episode 3 video game Obi-Wan Anakin Dooku mace Wu Etc okay cool got it you also get original trilogy characters Ben Kenobi you'll get Darth Vader you'll get the Death Star map from episode 4 okay cool yeah stuff you'd expect in a Star Wars game but then you get characters like Sy draig which when I had to look him up cuz I was like who is this dude according to the behind the scenes on the Star Wars Wiki for his brief appearance in Star Wars episode 3 Revenge of the Sith Sy draig was portrayed by prequel trilogy stunt director Nick Gard whose name was the basis for the character's name sin is Nick backwards without the K and draig is Gillard backwards draig would then appear in the 17th episode of the fifth season of The Animated television series Star Wars the Clone Wars so yeah um you know your favorite character from episode 3 remember this is a 2005 game nowadays I know Clone Wars Geeks are going to come at me he actually a very important character M well we're talking 2005 when we did not get to explore the Clone Wars in such Grand detail how about another one Sarah ketto or keto it spelled like keto like a keto diet nonetheless I had to look at the behind the scenes on this one too and over at the Star Wars Wiki they say that Sarah was created for the 2005 Lucas Arts Star Wars episode 3 Revenge of the Sith game according to the early drafts of the Revenge of the Sith game keto was supposed to fight Vader alongside her master synic in a two-on-one battle the fight would have required the Sith Lord to use all of his Dark Side powers to defeat the two highly skilled combatants but that never happened right so now you just have these two random characters in this game I think the idea was this let's talk about the story a little bit it's episode three video game right so you're GNA Play the movie basically there's a couple of differences though not just in stretching out the levels and a couple little things that happen in between it's more about the endings so naturally in the end of the Obi-Wan campaign you get to kill Anakin it's a lot less emotional like he chops him in half he slides down the rock wall Obi-Wan takes his a lightsaber and just kind of strolls off there's no you were the chosen one none of that stuff none of that right that's all there and gone and then you see a scene of him becoming Darth Vader Anakin however Anakin kills Obi-Wan so he succeeds on the flip Obi-Wan misses his swing stabs him the back I'm like who that that was pretty brutal Anakin kicks him down doesn't put him fully in the lava but it's close enough and then the emperor congratulates him hands him his new lightsaber and Anakin just impales him quickly after you know the clone troopers are surprised whoa what just happened here and he says that the G is his so my assumption is that there was going to be an epilog to this where as Darth Vader you were going to be attacked by these two Jedi as a final mission to kind of solidify his place as ruler of the Galaxy maybe this little continued story cuz I do like the idea of a secret ending if you beat the game with Obi-Wan you get anakins and I think that was the goal is to take it one step further I do wish movie games could get re-releases because this would be something I'd love to see content complete to create some meaning behind these characters Beyond just weird random additions to the roster like if you didn't have in my opinion the Star Wars Wiki i' have no idea who these characters are especially Sarah who is just literally thrown in here for the purpose of the game but doesn't appear in like the main story or really anything at all she looks really cool though so I wish there was a little bit more of her but that's the story behind these characters and the multiplayer mode which otherwise is just one-on-one dels in all these various Maps you're going to see throughout the main story and otherwise unlock as Secrets throughout completing said story but that's not it you're also going to get bonus missions you can play as the Magna guards fighting against the Clones you could play as Grievous in the level on udow where you fight against Obi-Wan there's a platforming challenge in his Anakin on Mustafar you could play as Yoda in the Jedi Temple you could play as Darth Vader on the Death Star killing Ben Kenobi like these are just there's tons of bonus missions that you unlock which is also I think incredible like they just pack this game full of content full of things to unlock things to do there's concept art you can unlock models you can unlock you know the classic game stuff but the amount of unlockable content in this game again I miss this sort of game design I get nowadays it's scary we got to access everything I get it I get it but I really really do wish that more games had the guts to say let's wall off some of the content like fighting games let's wall off like five to 10 Fighters and make people play a really good story to unlock them and and get creative with it because there's no denying that games with this kind of design had a little bit longer legs and could go where this would typically just be a you know 4our long tying game but because of the unlocks and the saber dual mode and the extra ending there was a lot here the bonus missions it added a lot of life to the game that otherwise could have been a shoe in and that's why you respect the game but also it just added so much to it because of the way it's designed where today they would just give you everything they they wouldn't just have bonus missions they'd be like oh we'll just make a section of the story and squeeze these in somewhere like I just feel we've lost that touch with our game design where back then it was done better at times and this is a great example of it so that's the console version of Revenge of the Sith let's take a look at that complete in box and then get into my personal favorite the DS and Game Boy advanced version all right before we get into the completing box I actually wanted to show you all something kind of crazy so this was always on the set of retro rebound maybe you've noticed it maybe you haven't I always say that the Retro rebound set is really fun because we have little if you will Maddy Easter eggs in the background this is the only episode 3 era Star Wars action figure I owned when I was a kid you know anything Star Wars my parents knew was an easy gift for me and during one of my birthdays as a kid which was in June um they got me this action figure but also this game which we'll talk about in a moment and it was just over from there but yeah this is always been on the set cuz I just have that strong connection um to episode 3 and I always remember those days fondly he originally had a blaster pistol I could sit in this holster or he could hold it here in his hand really cool action figure but yeah he's always in the background wanted to show him off but of course what you're here for is the PS2 comple and box experience of episode 3 Revenge of the Sith the back of the box reads the powers of a Jedi play as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi experience epic duels from the film that test your lightsaber skills and force Powers enhance your Jedi with new combo moves and upgradeable attacks then here it talks about exclusive movie content the only video game to feature footage from Revenge of the Sith gripping movie sound effects created by Skywalker sound authentic Star Wars soundtrack intensifies the action so yes this is the only game that you can get the episode 3 movie in I don't know if the title gave it away and the back also says go beyond the films battle through 16 interactive levels including neverbe seen locations inspired by the films clash with Darth Vader and other enemies in the multiplayer duels unlock other characters locations and bonuses and again really putting it Forward here that you get bonus footage or not just bonus footage actual footage from the movie on the inside here we have the same art for the disc as we do the manual and here on the front let's take a look at this manual uh you'll notice something when we get into the DS complete and box experience which is for some reason they did not illustrate or use any printer ink when it came to or colored printer in I should say uh when it came to the PS2 version but they did for the DS anyway they run you through the game screen what you see when you pause Auto saves they start getting into the combat basic moves that you're going to go through um Force powers you could force push grasp lightning or stun sa throws healing which is clutch in some of those tougher levels when the difficulty ramps up Force speed lot of options available for you most of these upgradeable Force jump icons this lets you get to certain parts of the level kind of like a contextual action some advanced moves of breaking grapples breaking out of stuns universal launcher you have the jump followup Air Tech Escape there was a lot to this game like I said the animations were impressive with how much is there so you have the story missions here what happens with skill which is what I was talking about earlier with the ratings um in Lord of the Rings where you had like the fair good great all that stuff um pretty much same thing here where low skill achieves a fair rating and no experience bonus and for the better rating you get on a mission you get up to double experience continuing on here they get into the multiplayer mode uh they also talk about the bonus missions here at the bottom I love how the bottom of the manual has little parts of the film here I do wish it was just Inked for that reason alone just because of how cool it would look and anyway we're here at the back with the credits the only thing that they spent some bread on by the way this is funny just seeing like you know you can go ahead to Sony classical doc to get more on the episode 3 soundtrack nowadays it's like you got Spotify you got Apple music all right good anyway the only thing they spent a little bit of printer ink on was here on the marketing department slip that you would send in to LucasArts and just let them know what you were thinking about the game what they could do next and then here on the back Star Wars prepare yourselves and they're promoting some Darkhorse Comics so pretty simple complete and box experience but nonetheless wanted to show off that action figure alongside it but this is what you would get this game in particular you'll get the action figure unfortunately in episode 3 on PS2 if you've watched a lot of Maddie you've likely at one point or another heard me wax poetic about the DS SL Game Boy advanced versions of Revenge of the Sith oh this is the Dual skew approach I'm always talking about I love how you get two different versions of the game if you love the double dip this is exactly what I'm talking about you're going to hear me do it again all right so let's do this why do I love the DS game boy advaned version so much arguably more than the PS2 version well for me there's a lot of memories packed into this let's just start there this was gifted to me as I'll talk about in a moment for my birthday by my parents the Game Boy Advance was home to so many experiences for me growing up it's a big reason why I love games so much today not just because oh it was great games and I wanted more of those but because I was on the road so so often it was my one way of constantly staying connected to games whenever I could like that handheld gaming was everything to me so to get Star Wars on the go was everything and then some to me so I think of games like Lego Star Wars 1 where that soundtrack is just there's this one section of the Droid Factory on Geonosis that's just Stained on my brain and I will never forget it for some reason but there's nothing even epic about it I just remember that moment so specifically and I also remember so specifically getting Revenge of the Sith as a gift on my birthday being off the- walls with excitement firing it up on my cobalt blue Game Boy Advance and running through this game in like an hour yeah Revenge of the Sith on DS and Game Boy Advance like many games on these systems was not very long at all but that didn't matter the mechanics are so refined the game is so replayable it's so enjoyable that to this day I still go back at least once a year because it's an hour playthrough and I'm done I have an hour to spare no doubt about it and I will definitely happily throw it into Revenge of the Sith now unlike Revenge of the Sith on PS2 it's not like I'm going to get into a plethora of modes and mechanics here in fact the DS and Game Boy advanced version is super simple not much I can really go on about here in a video but what I'll say is this I'm not a sidescroller connoisseur I'm a big fan of Mega Man X and its series I'm a big fan of Mega Man Zero I don't have a lick of Castlevania experience I've played games like Naruto nja Council but I don't know if that really qualifies as a true Bonafide sidescroller experience there's a couple out there that are not coming to mind but I've definitely experienced enough sides scrollers to say I like certain ones I'm not against the genre but Revenge of the Sith is absolutely one of the best ever Sid scrollers made and I don't care what anybody says and funny enough this comes from Ubisoft so why is this so good it's because it keeps it simple you think about in your head right how it's about the lightsabers and the the duels and the flips and the force powers and this is the most epic moment and in the movie game on consoles that would be true but in the movie games on handhelds I actually think it's the momentto moment beat him up action you see I love games like turtles in time could you tell by the arcade cabin that's been behind me for about almost a year now I also love Mighty morph and Power Rangers on the SNES X-Men is another one like there are so many great beat him UPS from that era that I adore and this is like getting a Star Wars version of that basically so the best moments in the handheld version aren't those boss fights although those are cool we'll talk about in a moment it's actually when you have a drut in front of you and you're desperately blocking all the Blaster bolets coming your way and then you have an enemy behind you a battle droid that you flip your saber over and stab behind you just to stagger them a bit and then you deflect a couple other bolts and then to clear some distance you jump at the enemy and you do a falling attack and then you use some of your Fury to spam out a really powerful move I mean that is what it's all about this game is simple you have a handful of buttons to go around from attacking to Jumping but it's all about directionals like you'll have battle droids in front of you and behind you and in so many Clips you're going to see me swinging in front of me and then quickly flipping lightsaber and stabbing behind me and just alternating between enemies it's almost like sidescroller free flow combat is if you were standing still I don't know how else to describe it but there's an Elegance a flow to it where I'm just going from one enemy to the other even though it's a beat him up and it follows the same rules of my favorite beat him ups but it's incredibly good after each level you're going to spend that experience like you would in the console version on new moves you'll upgrade your defense your force your health you'll also get new moves new combos these are especially useful during those tougher levels this is a great game to play on the highest difficulty once you get there it has a ton of enemy types you start off against battle droids you end up fighting Magna guards the boss fights themselves are still great although not the highlights to me it's really about learning where the enem is going to attack it's usually High mid and low and you memorize those patterns you block where they're attacking and then you strike back at them it does have a little bit of trading back and forth your turn my turn it's still great but to me the highlights are the skirmishes the mob battles that's where it's a real test of skill it's also about hunting down those little Collectibles hidden in the wall hiddden in breakable objects but it's not like what I'd say you'd get in the console version where there's a million in one unlock a lot of the unlocks are centralized around the Starship missions which is not like my favorite part of the game but it's especially cool on DS which we'll get into that version now so I mentioned how at the start of all of this one of my favorite memories with Revenge of the Sith was getting the Game Boy advanced version as a gift well before retro rebound started up my fiance heard me talking about how much during the pandemic I enjoyed collecting games and we were spending Christmas together and so she was paying attention and got me a game that I was talking about being interested in which was revenge of the sth she got it for me on DS and it was that feeling of opening going that same feeling of oh my God I remember this game I love this so much just like when I was a kid oh my God this game really being so excited and just like as a kid threw it in the DS immediately later that night she fell asleep I was playing the game ran through all of Obi-Wan's campaign in one sitting it's like an hour long right and that was that man it was it was incredible to me and it was that moment there among many others where I went I want want to share this with someone like I want to make retro rebound I want to make this retro gaming channel this was just about I'd say 9 months south of us getting ready to do that for real and so here we are now talking about this game like I said though the Starship missions on the DS you get to use your stylus it's a little fun a little creative a lot of unlocks here a lot of different ships you can get that you'll recognize from not only the original trilogy but also the prequel movies it's a really cool mode but it's mostly focused around multiplayer and so it doesn't add too too much in my personal opinion but still still a really cool mode very different so you really get the ultimate double dip here in Revenge of the Sith that's enough for me though let's go ahead and get into a complete and box experience for the DS version and then we'll get on out of here here we go we got episode 3 on Nintendo DS same front of the cover back of the cover talks about the ultimate Jedi action experience Jedi being trademark by the way kind of interesting there says with the fate of the Republic in your hands you must Master the ways of the force and resist its darkest Temptations use deadly weapon combos and Maneuvers to defeat legendary Star Wars villains including General Grievous and K Dooku discover formidable Jedi Powers including Force push saber throw and even M trick is in this game pilot classic Star Wars ships and action-packed four-player wireless dog fights and we'll talk about that in a moment here but yeah you see the cartridge you see the manual this does come with a marketing slip you'll note it's from Ubisoft though which is pretty interesting here so this is what they would receive in the mail you'd send it back out to them so yeah pretty interesting to see how many people came together to make these episode 3 games happen but funny enough Ubisoft to me making the superior version but that's Nostalgia talking anyway we have here on the inside the table contents breaking down the basic controls and like I mentioned earlier they they spent money on the printer ink for this one they decided to put some color in the DS maybe they were printing less copies of that compared to what was on console again more on the controls an introduction of what's happening in the story they walk you through all of the characters you see all of their Sprite art here all their various stances I love how they call them Darth tyrannis and not even Count Dooku the more familiar name just little cut there The Starships you can unlock they're 17 you can unlock for the multiplayer setup otherwise uh they're under the special mission in case you're wondering um you can see those right here and otherwise they get into things you see on screen like your health bar your Fury bar your focus bar all that stuff uh same thing here as you would get in the console game you can level up you'll also see how you m navigate the mission selection screen you can see how it's kind of like uh oh I don't know if you guys have played Zero Escape but it kind of reminds me a bit of that where you have these like branching story baths if you will uh their powers are different Obi-Wan has speed heal pull push shield and M trick so you can stun enemies in front of him M trick in case you wondering what that did and then Anakin has saber throw absorb pull push rage and choke and yeah Anakin's definitely the more fun one to play as he's got some out of pocket uh powers uh some of the pickups and what they do some levels you're really looking for these especially some of the Starship missions have their own powerups and then here on the back there're promoting Star Wars Trilogy Apprentice of the force which was another Ubisoft game and you would also have a coupon here on the bottom with free two-day shipping so if you wanted to pick this up you would get free two-day shipping so kind of cool little bit of a throwback there but nonetheless ladies and gentlemen that's what you got in a complete box copy of episode three Revenge of the Sith on Nintendo DS oh all right thank you for sitting through an obnoxiously long Revenge of the Sith video I'm sure there's a million out there already but I love these games so much and when we set up our content me and lock will typically get in a call and decide like what games do we want to cover what's coming out what do we want to synchronize things with what do we want to take flyers on and one of the things I really wanted to do to start off May was kick it off hard with some Star Wars content I know for a lot of people Star Wars optimism and interest it's kind of low I still adore the brand I still have so many Star Wars games I want to talk about and it was one of those setups for our content where I was more focused on the end goal than what was going to happen before it I think we could have picked games that were different from Phantom Menace and Clone Wars that would have maybe performed better like we haven't talked about Force Unleash 2 we haven't talked about a bunch of Star Wars games like the the PSP Battlefront games and we haven't talked about some of those but at the same time I feel like there is something really cool about being able to say hey in the month where they brought these Star Wars prequels back into theaters we covered each of the prequel movies and each of the games that were tied to those movies that is a cool thing to say we did and it's only possible because you supported us on patreon you support us by watching here ad revenue on YouTube is garbage so we just thank you for being a part of what we do here for stopping by supporting in any way you can it makes these moments so rewarding where it's like yeah we did that and I know for many people it's like what you talked about the prequels for the million time congrats but for us it's really cool just to see that all come together have that pocket of content so when someone new comes along and they want to see us talk about star Wars I mean we got the whole lineup nothing missed it's a really great feeling as a Creator so thank you for tuning in thank you for enabling us to do this I hope you enjoyed going down memory lane on Revenge of the Sith like I said this is probably going to be the last time we talk about episode 3 in such Grand detail so I wanted to go hard for it thank you for tuning in take excellent care of yourselves and I will see you in the next retro rebound peace out
