you guys remember when we did this a couple months ago I kept getting comments and said we need to scale it up okay let's scale it up I've got some work fast cast resin and some more of this just resin dye and those two together seem to be a very volatile combination as best I can tell it is because this is a water-based dye and a urethane resin this mold holds at least 75 ounces though I think it holds quite a bit more what we're not going to need anywhere near that much resin just because of the volume of holes that we're going to be generous so things are going to start moving pretty fast here because this resin only takes 10 minutes to cure normally but once we add the dye it boils away in a couple of minutes okay so we're going to start with eight ounces that's four ounces of Part B actually that was Part A and then four ounces of Part B I always like to start with the amber one so I can see the line going up and then we're gonna add turquoise okay we're gonna add turquoise dye oops I think that was more than I wanted I came out really fast 93 there we go 98 looking at boiling you see it that's crazy 104 okay 124 see it going peel aside Wow even that it's same yeah I think I left it in there a little too long [Music] oh look at this look at this this isn't this is heat this is smoke isn't it same that's ridiculous know what I left it in there too long I'll make you will have to do it again oh wow Wow looking yeah looks like a turquoise turd I do like that color yeah like a tip oh so what you're gonna notice is you'll see bubbles forming really quickly here and I'm gonna try to get both the cup and the bowl and frame Oh see that see that 1:02 okay so starting to make that bubbly thing if I wait too long it'll harden in the cup and that's probably close now we've given it more surface area so it's got a cool little faster yeah 201 and it's smoking in that amazing that's insane and you can see how much lighter it gets it's really pretty it is it's a nice color it's a nice Easter disaster 2:07 how long has it been I don't know it's hard make a plug hey look at that it's perfect hmm I'm still losing my voice and the plug is going to allow us to not use up quite as much resin so we're gonna use this here in the center and then we can pour the resin around the outside how'd you like that sound that's actually really cool-looking it kind of breaks into cells alright here we go yeah pretty quick the problem is is it cools off when you put it in the bowl so it happens faster in the cup because of the how close the resin is together so when it spreads out it cools off so you need to get it right when it's starting to go to this sort of crazy land here which we're pretty close alright not as violent no wonder why I didn't wait long enough I shoulda left it in a cup a little longer it's really pretty it's a nice color yeah that's a better color than I was expecting so you have to pick more colors then okay well I think magenta next okay there it goes there it goes I think we're pretty close [Applause] it's like lava beautiful lava it's like beautiful lava [Applause] it's not going up as high each time so I'm thinking it's going into each layer that's all it is I think they're sinking into each that is a lot of smoke 205 degrees Fahrenheit didn't go up very high this might take longer than I thought so we need another color and we're gonna go with violet for a violent violet okay I kind of just sprayed in all directions okay I think this is gonna happen pretty fast 93 all right I think we're getting close you see it trying to billow here [Applause] what do you think in that color I think it's really pretty those are big bubbles yeah they are look at that right up to the email Wow we got lucky I don't know I just keep thinking it'd be awesome if the middle part caught on fire Wow okay that is so you Oh weird I'll get that looks like an Easter Bowl it does yeah so we'll let it cool off and then I'll mount it on the lathe and see how it goes [Music] [Music] [Music] I've turn to recess and I've got it mounted but I don't know if it's gonna hold if I'm honest it seems really spongy I've got the tailstock up and I'm going to get the camera out of the line of fire did you hear that sound that was it coming loose of the the tenon that basically just told me that everything I was worried about this happen yep yep we're officially in trouble now and I don't know if I have a solution okay so normally what you would do is you would hollow out this plywood section it's not an option we can't hold this thing and so what I'm doing instead is I'm trying to cut right at the edge of where the plywood meets the resin and I'm gonna try to cut this piece [Music] yeah there's nothing holding this on it's just it's totally not there's my reef says and you can see it's just how to get this out so it's it's cut down to the sides I can see all the way down that this is this recess here that I turned is useless it's just I'm just expanding and expanding it with further pressure I don't I don't know how to I think it's bonded to well to the resin I don't know how to get this out all right everybody raised their hand who thinks it's a stupid idea yeah [Applause] there we go we've reached the resin layer and did it came free I think it might have been some of the might have just been the fact that got so hot hit it with the Dremel real fast and kind of clean up this Ridge a little bit and we're gonna call that we're gonna call it good I'd like to thank Squarespace for sponsoring this might be light enough to just clean this up on the lathe again [Applause] because unlike the plywood this material doesn't grab I mean it just tears right off it's really but that being said I'm still not gonna push it I think I think that's enough pushing our luck for the day yeah okay that cleans up pretty nice you get all the stuff out of the holes just a couple quick wax on the table look at that I don't know it's good to kind of such an interesting feel to it it's very tactile you just want to you want to hold it the closest thing I can relate it to is a pumice stone so it'd be good for exfoliation I guess I don't know if you're into that I don't know what to call it though I think I'm gonna call it a resin lava bowl just because of the effect that you see when it boils itself up it's just it's weird to call something so pretty a lava bowl I love the process I love listening to it is the way it pops and crackles it's not like anything else I've ever worked with and that's what makes it interesting I know I've said this before but I think it's hugely important when you're working with weird materials you can't expect them to act like other materials that's the point I turned this wooden insert and put it in there thinking I was making my life easier because I was gonna have to pour less resin and I actually made it harder because I couldn't hold this on the lathe and turn this out if I hadn't have done that it would have probably been another I don't know ten ounces or so we've been up to about 50 ounces of resin but it would have turned super easy thank you very much for watching I always appreciate it and I will catch you guys next time [Music]
