hey guys it's tuesday night again so today i want to do a head-to-head between old and new remington 870s now this is very similar to old versus new smith and wesson's or current production sigs versus west german-made cigs the older guns no matter how you slice it they just are more desirable they're more collectible and they do have some key things that set them apart from the current production guns now the price difference between these two guns was about 125 to 150 this one is used of course but that's not a lot of money so hopefully this video helps you decide if it's worth it to you to seek out one of these uh one of these older guns excuse me now feature-wise the guns are very very similar three-inch chambers they're both 12-gauge they both have the wood furniture field barrels four-inch capacity so they are they are similar in those are specs now i don't want to get too far in the weeds as far as like freedom group goes i'm not an expert on that there's a lot of kind of hearsay that gets tossed around but basically the accepted culture is that once freedom group took over production the quality on these guns did drop so the express guns especially the freedom group guns they don't have a very good reputation compared to the older guns that being said i generally have good good performance out of the express guns and this one especially has absolutely been the best one i've ever had so let's talk about the features and things you're really going to notice when you pick up these guns the first thing is the quality and finish of the wood and the quality and the finish of the metal these older guns just have the beautiful walnut the lacquer coated walnut you've got the nice little remington emblem down here and you've got this gorgeous old-school balloon not that bluing is the strongest or most durable finish ever but it is very very attractive and it does protect the gun as long as you just keep it oiled it's very very smooth and we'll talk about this in a second but that contributes to the really nice smooth action compare this to the more cheap basic look of the current express guns the wood is kind of just like that laminate look it still feels really beefy you know it feels nice but it just kind of reminds me of cheap furniture you just have this really cheesy probably like laser engraved or whatever uh remington are down here the checkering is not as aggressive it just feels more mass-produced the the finish on this is what i consider to be like a poor man's parkourization it's not very durable scratches very easily it is prone to rusting i i in my experience that is true so you do have to keep it clean and because it is so kind of rough feeling even if it's only a couple percentage points when you combine the rough feeling of the inside of the gun with the rough feeling of the tube the rough feeling of the bolt that's all going to contribute to the action on this just not being as smooth as this gun now let's talk about the action when you pick up this gun you know it's okay it's nothing to write home about but you know it's a sub 300 gun i'm not going to get too upset but for this gun you know i only paid 150 more and you just you absolutely cannot compare the the two actions the old the old wingmaster action just feels like absolute butter another big difference is the express guns have the polymer trigger housing we've got a metal trigger housing here does that make or break that's up to you we have the chrome bolt which is nice and smooth failing again eating just a little bit in that nice feeling of the action this finish i don't know what it is but it feels very similar to the gun itself now both these guns are four shot capacities i'm not a hundred percent on the old guns but i'm pretty sure that the old guns did not come with the silly little crimp that limits the magazine tube i could be wrong on that but a selling point in my opinion of remingtons is that you could very easily put an extension on with these current production guns at least if they don't already have the extension they come with that stupid those stupid little dimples and you have to either grind them off or pound them off or whatever before you can put a longer magazine spring and follower so just be aware of that now uh jumping somewhere else i have heard guys complain and say the fit and finish is not good on the express guns and in some ways i agree with that one thing though some guys will complain and say on the um stock this lip right here is is because it's a cheaper gun well the fit on that is exactly the same as the fit on the on the wing master it doesn't sit completely flush with the edge of the receiver it has a little bit of a lift it doesn't bother me at all so don't worry about that now some things that people will do to get their express guns to be more similar to an old wing master or an old police is to upgrade some key parts probably in my opinion the most important part is the extractor the the older guns the higher quality guns have the non-mem part the the express guns come with a mim extractor and the big difference besides how they make it is the non-mem part has a more aggressive hook you can get one right from remington or a company called vol volkhortzen if i'm saying that correctly they make one too and that really helps to just get into the shell people report issues with extraction where especially if you're using low brass like really cheap walmart ammo the gun has a hard time getting the round out and it gets gets locked up i have experienced that before with with express guns now this gun i had already swapped out that part and i had polished the chamber on this barrel that is another thing that people do um people have reported that the uh the finishing process on the express barrels are just not the greatest and sometimes you have a rougher chamber which tends to kind of grab onto the shells so i polished this out with some quadruple ought steel wool and some oil and put this extractor in and yesterday in 50 or 60 rounds mostly shooting garbage ammo this gun ran a hundred percent so i definitely would recommend doing that another thing that people do is they will put a higher powered spring in here and the police guns have that too um that just helps eject your shell more efficiently efficiently and get it into the shell lifter some people will also put a higher powered spring in the shell lifter and they will put a higher power swing i forget the name of it but it it's it's like the trigger pin the trigger spring or something like that it's going to add a little more weight to your trigger but uh it's also going to um help with uh with the striker when it when it encounters rounds that have a harder primer on them i have not put those two springs in i don't feel it's necessary but that's what people typically do when they're trying to get their express guns to be closer to the uh the police magnums or like the the wingmasters here so those are some those are some key things that you that you can really see you can touch when you look up the parts unlike brown nails they're going to tell you that the part is what's used in a wing master or used in a police now you can get a modern production wing master and the last i checked i think they cost like in the realm of 750 or 800 um if it was me i wouldn't spend that much money i would rather spend half the price and seek out an old gun just because you're getting that collectibility you're getting that nostalgia and yes it is a pre freedom group gun that being said this sub 300 gun for a couple more dollars to change out two parts and polishing the barrel this gun is rapidly becoming a fan favorite of mine it ran great it feels great it's not as fancy as this gun but this is a beater gun for me i can have fun with it and i have to worry about beating up my uh my wingmaster so hopefully that helps you decide or give you a little more information you know if you're trying to make this decision they're both decent guns but if honestly if i could only have one my budget only allowed one i would seek out the old used wing master or police magnum okay so that's all i got today i'll talk to you guys later
