I built a real hoverboard from Back to the Future it actually floats using this interesting physics property called the ground effect this is how we made it in all the cool levitation Tech that goes into bringing the iconic hoverboard to real life and even bringing it to the spots they shot the movie almost 40 years ago you'd think hovering is some futuristic thing that only exists in movies but that's not the case in fact you can actually make something hover right now just a pingpong ball oh that would have been cool if I got a first try oh I'm [Music] laded there it is you can even levitate other things too if you have more air you see fast moving air sticks to the smooth surfaces of an object this creates a low pressure area on top which actually pulls the objects up with the same force that gravity's pulling it down what else can we levitate I had it for a sec it even self corrects if it goes too high less air flow causes less Force so it falls back down too low and you get more air flow causing it to lift again super simple self-correcting way to hover but we can't have an air compressor following us around wherever we want to hover it kind of ruins it I want this hoverboard to work anywhere you know no trickery just put it down and go so I started looking into other ways of levitating so this is my mini floating hoverboard that uses magnetic levitation just got to place it on here boom no wires no magic nothing below nothing on top see in here is a ring of powerful magnets to oppose the magnet inside our hoverboard but if you ever tried to balance a magnet on top of another magnet you know it's it's extremely unstable the second I take my hand off it just doesn't work that's why inside we've got additional electromagnets that sense the position of our hoverboard and adjust the force to keep it perfectly centered if we line this up just right and boom we're hovering also if you guys want this exact hoverboard I'm actually giving it away just your own on online store I was thinking about scaling this up the problem is you can really only hover in one place which will not help you in any car chases hey stop to make a magnetic hoverboard that actually goes somewhere we could use superconductors it hovers locked in place in a magnetic field no power no fancy Electronics or moving parts superconductors are any material that have zero resistance to electricity at cold temperatures there crystalline structure lets electrons Flow Free and when you put it near a magnet the magnetic field lines penetrate through the the super conductor this locks a super conductor inside the field like it's riding on an invisible wire but these super conductors are both super expensive and need to be super cold like - 292 Fen to work so my small scale hoverboard can lift a bit over 10 G so let's do the math how many would it take to lift my weight that's a lot Believe It or Not each one of these is like a 100 bucks too so yeah I don't really want to do that we could do it cheaper by just spinning magnets this creates a pretty stable Force to hover on people have actually made hoverboards using this technique but again it only works on metal plates you put down everywhere else not so much I want my board to work anywhere you know grass roads water whatever we might even be able to use sound I know it sounds silly but it's possible to levitate an object using just sound waves there's even a perfect example in the movie where Marty turns up Doc's massive amp then plays one cord and gets blown back like 20 ft obvious obviously this is a bit of an exaggeration but sound is just changes in air pressure so sound waves do actually cause physical movement like breaking a glass with your voice or damage from a sonic boom we can actually use this to our advantage get ready to have your mind blown speaker reflector sound bouncing off in between here now the magic as you can see it's actually being trapped in between the pressure waves of the sound no strings attached you can even add multiple in different nodes that one's sitting in the lower node we've got an upper node let's see how many I can get in here oh that's three almost look like they're stuck on a stranded like spider silk see if I can get one more four wow perfectly shows the wavelength right there completely levitating with just sound unplug voila while a giant hoverboard full of speakers would be so cool doesn't work at Large Scale so far each method has their drawbacks not enough lift needs a pre-placed track or just an insane amount of power power to work so after everything I've researched and tried I think some sort of air power is going to be our best bet my issue though like this is a hoverboard not an airplane for once in my life I don't want this to fly you know we've already done that so how do you use air power to just hover and not fly well this is a hovercraft and it's actually super simple I just mounted a few electric Jets to a board that Force air down underneath these Jets aren't strong enough to fly or anything but by adding a skirt around the side you can trap the air underneath and get a cushion to ride on this lift the hovercraft off the ground and makes for a basically frictionless ride see if it floats yeah put on that Spider-Man helmet the cross over everyone [Music] needed did I do it was that a hoverboard think that's the video it's not the smoothest right hovercrafts like this are actually used in certain areas cuz it can go on all terrain even from land to water thanks to the fact that it's well hovering but it doesn't look like it's hovering you know even if it is riding on a cushion of air you can't see underneath like in the movie so it's less magical people have made some with clear plastic skirts they do look cool but it's not the same thing so I was thinking about other ways to get more lift like maybe a lightweight gas if you get enough helium it's definitely possible to hover again though it's just not very efficient like you need so much you can also use gas that's heavier than air to hover this works just like how boats float but instead of water we've got a really dense gas so you're able to actually float objects on top of that gas so a layer of this gas everywhere could help with a hoverboard but that's also super impractical to hover anywhere using only air we need some sort of aircraft that only works close to the ground well this type of plane does just that they're built to fly only close to the ground thanks to this property called the ground effect it happens when an aircraft flank close to the ground gets more l lift thanks to the air bouncing off the ground and creating this extra pressure cushion when planes fly higher up the wings also have a bit of turbulence on the tip causing drag which makes it harder to fly and when they're near the ground this turbulence is also broken up causing less drag and allowing the aircraft to fly easier so this ground effect air cushion is gradient with the strongest effect taking place at about half the wingspan when a plane gets higher than this it starts losing that extra force and falls back down this creates a natural feedback loop that keeps the aircraft locked at a certain height you know exactly what we want from a hoverboard but we can't just strap Wings to the board and make it an airplane luckily most all aircrafts have ground effect helicopters and drones also make this cushion of air to float on their blades act the same as airplane Wings except they're spinning it's even possible to remove the skirt from a hovercraft and use only ground effect to hover think air hockey table but upside down somehow this is my prototype board and you can see it lift off and Float a bit when we rev it up only one problem we need more power power so let's build a board full of these massive edfs that should be plenty of power how hard could it be right that was almost 2 years ago when we had that thought turns out it's harder than you might think let me explain on the video timeline this hoverboard project started mid Iron Man jetpack I just blown up my first super sketchy prototype and I was looking for a safer way to fly enter these edfs they were a little bit smaller so we'd need a lot of them and I thought this hoverboard would help me learn if they'd work for the jetpack also wanted to help with this project so I brought in some other Engineers like Zach almost in frame lower there you go may have also seen other projects too and we got to work testing these edfs instantly we realized these things suck power that is it's like 170 amps wow that can power an entire house the wires could not handle it and needed upgrading this wire's hot cuz it's thin wi oh yeah yeah we got probably get bigger gauge luckily in ground effect Motors put out about 7% more thrust for the same amount of power ideally we wouldn't be running full thrust anyway at least this helped us use a little less power and make the board as small as possible we put together a board with three squares of 3x3 edfs which is like the size of a thick snowboard I fully trust it that's why I'm wearing this motorcycle helmet yeah it'll be fine we got a fire extinguisher you guys ready [Music] yeah it mostly worked but controlling 27 of these edfs reliably came a bit of a problem some Motors would randomly shut off other times it all just spazz out this SP section here wasn't spinning it on yeah I know for some reason the front end kept being way more powerful than the back I think what that tells us is jakc will just have to be leaning constantly I think that's what you needed to only took us like 6 weeks to figure out we had some of the motors backwards but you know honest mistake figured that out actually by spraying the motors with gas you can see if the gas gets sucked through great if not yikes that's that's tough that was tough after months of debugging and fine-tuning we were hopefully ready for a final test fast still not the most reliable oh my God they temped the whole thing it wasn't working perfectly earlier oh wait yeah to see see if something happens I [Music] guess that was pretty good dud why did that work it's cool when bugs fix themselves but if you don't squash them that usually means they come crawling back no oh my God I just didn't trust it at this point especially with this design if all the motors get stuck full power there's literally nothing I can do except get rocketed up that's what I was most scared of and why testing continued for the next year I actually flew the jetpack already because if all those Motors get stuck on I can just put my arms out to the side away from the ground and I'll land built-in fail safe like with this board if it all goes on I am as they say the problem is the power there's that thin window between not enough power where it doesn't hover at all and too much power that it could Fly Me Away I don't trust the electronics in here and I physically only want it to be able to hover again flying is great but I've already made the Green Goblin drone and I really just want this board to work in ground effect eventually that we dialed in the exact right thrust to just sit in that ground effect layer so even if it gets stuck max power it doesn't matter cuz it's locked to the ground Coming For You doc Back to the Future so we built a carbon fiber body with quick release covers to access the batteries and set up a testing rig to give it a shot all right well uh gun it no I'm kidding [Music] they hovering oh my God that's so Co this is sick we're hovering yeah dude was I hovering you're hovering very cool H yeah yeah dude it looks cool [Music] too a little squirly oh that's exciting that's crazy I'm fully floating yeah because we're floating on a cushion of air it's really turbulent we were going to add some sort of controller like a drone but I actually think I can learn to balce it it's doable yeah like a flat ground you could totally stay balanced all you got to do you just stay locked up right and after a bit more testing I was able to take off and land with no hands yeah no hands didn't touch it wow not once also the crutch is not cuz of any injuries due to this right what happened with the crutch according to my contract nothing happened at J laser video LLC okay they'll buy that [Music] test off baby it's finally working and pretty soon I was able to let go and hover completely on my own no tethers no handholds welcome to the Future so I'm feeling pretty good and I think it's time to try and fly it for real last step though complete the outfit I already got the pants jacket and vest which as a bonus all have built-in body armor you know got to stay safe safe but we still need those self-lacing shoes for that I was able to find some knockoff replicas but they don't self la like in the movie I've seen a couple other people make self-lacing shoes using Motors and string like Nike themselves even did a limited run so if you've got an extra 30 grand lying around go get yourself a pair but Motors and string and all those fancy Electronics seem pretty fragile for a shoe that's just going to get stepped on and probably break well this is nightl a nickel titanium alloy that has a very unique property it actually remembers its shape bend it however you want and when it reaches its activation temperature it Springs back it's perfect for self-lacing shoes all we got to do is put some current Through the Wire and it'll lace up I just step in and it should lace right up that is so cool oh that feels weird oh it's getting a little warm really contracts like laces wood I'm actually thinking about giving these away too over on that actually built the hoverboard for the movie beautiful cute young man she said this is her granddaughter no no way they were super sweet and love the board we're also very close to where they shot Marty riding a skateboard behind a truck on his way to school this is the pretty much exact shot that they got from the movie so we just need to tear down right through here we've got a nice car there parked as a pick so we hopefully Don't Get Smoked by these cars I think this is about as clear as we're going to get so when it turns red you'll give the signal Christian will tell me to go no no no go go [Music] go [Music] damn dude yeah we place to the shot of him just rolling yeah oh dude oh let's go things never go this smoothly as we own this building kept on noticing all these people taking self of Burger King like got the burger is that good oh this is where they film Back to the Future one last thing I want to try hovering over water Marty did this in the movie and his board didn't work too well those Bo don't work on Water I wonder if ours will do any better but if we're going to try this we're going to do it right instead of just trying to hover over the water let's get a boat a tow rope and try to basically hover wakeboard over a lake that'd be insane if it works only problem this board is not waterproof it's full of holes and sensitive electronics that will break if they get wet now I think as long as we're hovering we should be fine but if for whatever reason it shuts off that's almost 2 years and $40,000 down the drain despite all this I was feeling confident it's been working so well and we even did a tow rope test which went great that'll work just imagine that on water on water let's do it on water now dud there's a chance this actually works all I got to do just stand on the board so we headed to the lake loaded up the board and set out to find a good spot to give it a rip I think it'll be smoother over water that's my prediction Jak's not here what are the odds that that board goes into the water if he was here I I'd make sure to tell him it's 100% Going In The Water oh the plan is to start on land and get towed into the lake where we set up a raft that I'll hopefully be able to land the board on safe and sound it's going to work I feel like this moves a lot yeah a little bit but you know so does the board up life jacket nice it's the puffy vest from Back to the Future what's with the life preserve what we we really only have one shot of this still think it's going to work finally everything was set weeks of planning years of making this board and thousands of dollars on the line all for this epic shot oh yeah oh my that's going to be good give me a thumbs up all right let's hit this I did good freaking luck [Music] man [Music] it did not go over the water oh man the water's Roofing no anything that's in there stay oh that's good it's cooling yeah dude it's flooded man I don't know how I'm going to feel if I see this go in the water there's a chance I cry hopefully Jake's got it but 2 years 2 years of work not go over the water I would like you to cut it to where you just fall directly into the water never going to happen do you think you could put it in rice the fact that that think's probably worth 40 Grand you just dipped it in water is pretty how much is fasted over the years we just kept out a little bit more money little throw another motor on it it's a ton of water it was a pretty sick shot nonetheless big rainbow I mean dude some hoverboards float on this one really thought it was going to Flo now thinking about it I don't know why I believed it it didn't work in the movie either that it doesn't work on water wait so then we nailed it yeah we nailed it
