When they first began televising presidential campaigns when television was invented, many many people that it was incredibly dangerous. People understood how limiting only being able to read about or hear someone was. When they ran someone who was a movie star as President and he won, it popped the top of Pandoraβs Box in some ways that we are still addressing today (Almost 40 years later).
Maybe it's a generational thing, but that makes me think more "I'd watch this guy's half-hour comedy special" than "I'd want this guy running the country".
Who knew someone so charismatic could fund so many death squads.

He was also good at acting like the aids epidemic was not a big deal. Also good at acting like he wasn't arming the Contras.
He was a professional actor and it showed.
That was true about "getting a lot worse", after collapse of ussr, post-soviet period was a lot worse than late Soviet era
