we are ranking every race God help me in D D from estia crazy overpowered down to C tier underpowered or just outclassed we're starting with the 33 updated races from Modern canaan's Monsters of the Multiverse so if you're new to the game and you just want to know what all the different races do or you're looking for inspiration on your next build this is the place to be each race was also voted on by the community on patreon so I'll show those rankings somewhere on screen as we go along okay let's do this araco so these guys are essentially seagull people and they used to be like estia because they had 50-foot fly speed that made them optimal for any race that was doing hit and run tactics you just could not catch these things they're still great but they have been nerfed with a 30-foot fly speed improved unarmed strikes and a once per day casting of gust of wind sure they're simple but flight is is just a powerful ability and they make great monks with a D6 unarmed strike from level one all in they go in a tier asima for a race with us in their name these guys are pretty good they're basically humans mixed with angels packing a resistance to necrotic damage and radiant damage and dark vision and some free healing magic their big thing is Celestial Revelation which is like a once per day transformation that lets you either frighten enemies or shine a light from your face or the one that everyone actually picks fly it lasts for one minute and you also deal extra radiant damage on every attack you make while transformed that means asamar are actually better with classes that make lots of attacks like Fighters monks and warlocks all in I'm giving them a solid beat here uh so my ex-girlfriend told me that she thought bog bear were weak and I just instantly on the spot ended the relationship because clearly she was [ __ ] insane book Bears get this ability called surprise attack where every attack you make against an enemy that hasn't taken a turn yet this combat deals an extra 2d6 damage that is insane on Fighters assassin Rogues warlocks and monks because you'll just Chuck taking out an extra six to eight D6 damage on the first turn even in the early game they also get dark vision improved reach so you can attack enemies without being in range for them to attack you back Proficiency in stealth and a resistance to the charm condition they just kill it all easy s tier for bug Bears absolutely insane so centaurs are these like badass hulking terrifying Warriors until this book came out and they just turned into the most adorable Little Pony people I've ever seen just look at that Arch she is adorable it's like a 14 year old going to her first ever Comic-Con a few of these updated like monstrous races got this Disney treatment in this book so we created a special tier just for them called snuggle bun they're still decent as a race you get a 40-foot movement speed you can make a bonus action attack when you charge towards an enemy and you're a fey as your creature type which lets you dodge a few nasty spells like Holt person but yeah a snuggle buns here for you so changelings are all about the shape changes ability as an action you can change your appearance voice and even your height appearing medium or small but your statistics stay the same so you can pass as a gnome or a Goliath or a giant Badger as long as it has the same basic arrangement of Limbs you're good to go amateur furries think that tabaxi is the best race but if you talk to the real hardcore furries they'll go changeling every time they go in B tier they don't do much apart from the whole shape change thing but if you want to play any kind of spy or infiltration type character you literally can't do better deep gnomes like all gnomes are just criminally underrated 120 foot dark vision advantage on all wisdom intelligence and Charisma saving throws the disguise self-spell and advantage on stealth checks a few times per day easy eightier they're amazing on any class people just don't like them because they can't pronounce the word sverfe neblin speaking of things people can't pronounce duraga another race with 120 feet of dark vision and some free Magic duragar get in large reduce and invisibility for free once per long rest both amazing spells then you resist poison damage and get advantage on saves against the poison condition the charm condition and the stun condition free spells are always good but I gotta mention that any race that gets free spells tends to make better spellcasters that's because if you are a spellcaster and you're also a race that can cast spells those spells are added to your spell list so you have the option of casting them more than once anyway solid B tier for Durga so eladrine can teleport as a bonus action which is just really good you even get bonus effects to charm a creature frighten a creature or just deal extra damage when you teleport aside from that it's the usual elf stuff some free proficiencies four hour long rest dark vision and advantage against charm effects which are all great abilities Elegance whole gimmick is that they change personality types and even appearance and abilities depending on the season that they're in a solid 80 they're both really strong mechanically and just awesome for role play Fairies get two greats once per long rest spells in fairy fire and in large reduce that's a good start to any race it's also a good end because that's everything fairies have they're also Fae eightier because flight is good and their spells are good Bro you've got to give me the D the what give me the D bro now you mean like penis dragons the second D in D and D I want all the dragons you want all the dragons all the dragons then you need extra's guides to Dragon bonding it's his guide to Dragon bonding is a 5e supplement all about dragons dragons over 300 pages of dragon Focus content to enhance your game bond with dragons and own the skies new rules to add to your games that let you adventure with a true dragon in your party rules for Dragon combat ancient draconic Rune magic and crafting for Dragon items and Potions plus three brand new classes Dragon Hunters Dragon Heralds and Valar adepts and 14 new races eight new subclasses two new magic systems six new dragon Broods and over 50 new monsters it's as guides to Dragon bonding put the dragon in D and D out now on Kickstarter Link in description so four ball get this ability called speech of Beast and leaf where you can talk to animals and plants but they can't talk back which by the way is an ability that everyone has in real life I talked to my dog all the time and she never talks back either advantage on Charisma checks against beasts is awesome if you want to talk to animals and furbox can also turn invisible as a bonus action that's really good for setting up advantage on the next attack or escaping combat without provoking opportunity attacks they also get detect magic and disguise self once per long rest each I'm putting them in B tier invisibility isn't quite as good as teleportation generally but it is still a good ability if you want to adopt stray Bears on your adventure these guys are the guys for you so all the janasi got separated into individual races in this new book in a stunning move by Wizards of the Coast which basically let them advertise having more races than ever before without actually having to create anything new that that is some big brain marketing engine asking and hold their breath forever they got a 30 foot walking speed they get dark vision and they resist lightning damage they also get the cantrip shocking grasp and they can cast levitate and feather fall once each per long rest Real Talk those are some good spells eight here for air janasi because I really like the levitate spell Earth genasis get dark vision they can walk across any difficult terrain without impediment as long as it's on the ground and they can cast the cantrip blade Ward as a bonus action a few times per long rest that gives them resistance to all damage for a round basically making the mini barbarians they also get passed without Trace once per long rest which is a great spell and putting them in betia they make great heavy weapon Fighters especially dark vision is good fire resistance is good just like California there's a lot of fire in DND plus they get the Spells produce flame burning hands and Flame blades flame blade is just the beta virgin cousin of the Chad Shadow Blade but it is still a cool spell these guys are another great option for Fighters betier so look I'm a pretty upbeat dude right my life's pretty sweet I've got a pet dog I've got a YouTube channel I hope to get laid one day I've got a lot going for me but water janasi make me hate life and hate this game I love the shape Water Country it's tied from my favorite spell in the entire game and water janasi took it away they don't get shape water anymore they get the acid Splash can trip instead the water janasi yet the acid Splash can trip see tier water janasi suck they're the only janasi that don't get dark vision and they resist acid damage when obviously they should resist cold damage instead oh yeah and all their spells suck as well so githyanki get a bonus action teleport like eladrin but it is worse they get it three free casting of Misty spell once per long rest from fifth level but because that's a spell and not an ability they can't cast another level spell on the turn that they use a bonus action to do it however magehand is a great can trip to get for free they also get like because super elf trance where you can pick up one free skill proficiency at the end of a long rest that lets you sort of Stack the dice in your favor if you know what you're going to be doing the next day also psychic resistance is okay I'm putting them in beat here gifts are I get Shield which is a hell of a lot better than jump which is what gives Yankee get at third level but they also get to text thoughts which is definitely worse than Misty step also psychic resistance again but this time you also get advantage on saving throws Against The Charmed and frightened conditions the gifts or I just make it into 80 The Shield spell is no joke it's especially good on clerics paladins Druids and Rangers who can cast it with their other spell slots as well Goblin advantage against being Charmed dark vision and fury of the small apparently small people got less Furious over the years because this ability deals less damage than it used to but it still gives you bonus damage on an attack or spell equal to your proficiency bonus against a creature that is bigger than you Nimble Escape though that feature is pretty good it's a bonus action disengage or hide every turn with no restriction it's great for hit and run builds who like to charge in cast booming blade and then slip out again I really like Goblin on Eldritch Knight Fighters I'm putting them at the absolute top of B tier goliaths are little giants which makes them really tall and really strong they can push Dragon lift double the amount of other races their size they also resist cold damage and they can reduce incoming damage with their Stone's endurance traits basically when you're hit you roll a D12 you and your Constitution modifier to that role and the Damage you take is reduced by that much that's an average of 11 hit points reduced with maxed out con and you can do it multiple times per long rest they go in B tier if you're looking to tank this is a hell of a choice Harring on are pretty good they're rabbits basically you add your proficiency bonus to your initiative roles and going first is always nice and you have Proficiency in the best skill in the game perception you also get to add a D4 to any deck save you fail potentially turning it into a success but the really cool ability is rabbit hop you jump a number of feet equal to five times your proficiency bonus as a bonus action without provoking opportunity attacks that's a free disengage plus a crazy movement speed buff plus it's boosted by the jump spell which means there's actually a reason to cast The Jump spell in D and D they go in B tier they're especially fun if you like grappling enemies jumping 30 feet in the air and pile driving them into the dust hobgoblins went from wanting to tear your face off to being one of the cutest sweetest little races in the entire game even mechanically everything they do got re-flavored to make it super adorable they're actually fantastic with a bonus action help plus heal and a pretty much free plus three on any attack roll ability check or saving throw multiple times per long rest I'd put them top of eight here if they weren't going right down at the top of snuggle bunts here because they're just way too adorable kinku's big thing is mimicry they have advantage on any check to duplicate writing or craftsmanship and can imitate any sound they hear including voices so you can imitate a dragon's raw or beatbox like a champion and other creatures need to pass an Insight check to tell that it's fake they also get Proficiency in any two skills and can give themselves advantage on those skills multiple times per day so any build that wants to be amazing at something like Athletics for grappling Fighters or stealth for Rogues are really good kenko all in I think they're just good enough to make it to eightier okay kobolds are awesome they get dark vision and draconic cry which lets you scream as a bonus action to give yourself and all allies advantage on all attack rolls against all enemies who are within 10 feet of you that is a really good support ability they also get your choice of any three bonus abilities you either get a free skill proficiency meh advantage on saves against being frightened pretty good or access to any sorcerer account trip or awesome they make amazing melee Warriors like Rogues Fighters paladins and barbarians and you can pick up the Fireballs can trip to have a decent ranged damage option on any build look you can call me a lizard propaganda spreading cuck if you like but I'm putting them in s tier I really think they're that good if you want to role play a character that eats other characters then lizard folk are the race for you even though according to this book they totally don't do that anymore wink plus two free skill proficiencies and a bonus action bite attack which gives you temporary HP when you land it this makes lizard folk amazing martial characters with a multi-attack option right from Level 1 even without dual wielding honestly I think they're underrated they're going in eight here and if the new light weapon property rules from One D D stick around these guys would go up to S tier as Rangers minotaurs are these hulking terrifying Monsters of war with a crown of deadly horns and a vicious temperament until this book came along and made them the sweetest little cow folk ever I just love the massive dissonance between this new cute art and the names of their abilities like Goring rush and hammering horns basically they get a horn attack on armed strike and a bonus action horn attack if they Dash up to 20 feet they also have advantage on Survival checks to navigate or track so of course they go at the very top of snuggle bunts tier adorable Orcs are kind of this ironic race where stereotypically you'd think they'd be super buff Barbarian types but their abilities are actually way better suited to frail spellcasters wow where do you work out huh the library they have a bonus action Dash that also gives them temporary hit points and a once per day I choose not to die but where if they'd fall to zero hit points they fall to one hit point instead they also get dark vision and can lift Dragon push double the amount of other races their size I reckon they go in low 80 and they're a really fun option if you want to role play against a common stereotype oh God Mr tumnus is so broken so saters did get nerfed in this book because their magic resistance now only works on spells not on all magical effects however advantage on all saves against all spells is still amazing and they get 35 movement speed super jumps proficiency and performance and persuasion two great skills and upgraded unarmed strikes and their face so they also Dodge a bunch of [ __ ] spell effects that way too I'm putting them in low s tier if they were the old SATA they would be High s tier okay I'm not gonna sugarcoat this but sea elves are pretty bad compared to every other elf sub race unless you have a campaign with specifically takes place in or under the sea you get a 30-foot swim speed resistance to cold damage and then all the other usual elf stuff their big splashy feature is friend of the sea making it the beasts who have a swim speed can understand what you say but it doesn't give you advantage on any checks to interact with them like the furball have which kind of means it sucks if you're playing in a water Focus campaign these guys are beat here but if not I'm putting them down under the sea but what if elves were edgy and listens to My Chemical Romance even in 2022 shout out can I get all the usual elf stuff trance Stark Vision perception Etc but they also resist necrotic damage and they get the blessing of the Raven Queen that's a bonus action 30-foot teleport a few times a day and from Level 3 upwards whenever you do this you resist all damage until the start of your next turn if someone sent this to me as a Homebrew to review I'd say it was overpowered it's literally just elegant elves but better they go in s tier I especially great for melee Warriors like paladins monks and Rangers who really appreciate the extra tanking power of blessing of the Raven Queen shifters almost get put in the snuggle bumps tier going from Freaky Beast people to man with dog but they are so underrated I want to give them a bit of credit you get dark vision Proficiency in any one skill and a bonus action transformation into a beast form sort of like a werewolf type deal when you transform you get two times your proficiency bonus in temporary hit points and then an additional benefit depending on your transformation type Beast hides get plus one AC and more temporary hit points they're the tanky option long tooth get a bonus action bite attack they're the melee damage option Swift stride get extra movement speed and can use their reaction to run away whenever a creature ends its turn nearby they're the coward option and wild Hunt get advantage on wisdom checks and no creature within 30 feet can have advantage on attacks against them they're the busted option wild hunts are incredible barbarians long-term with our incredible Moon Druids these tides are also great barbarians and Swift stride are great ranged attackers and you can shift multiple times per day I might get some Kickback here but I'm actually putting them in s tier a well optimized shifter is legit insane and there's so much role play potential plus there's just no race that does anything like what shifters do they're completely unique and I like that [ __ ] power is legit so Maxi get Proficiency in perception and stealth dark vision upgraded unarmed strikes and the famous feline agility that doubles your speed at no action cost until the end of your turn a level 2 to maximunk can use this and dash twice for 240 feet of movements in six seconds and you can do that as often as you'd like the only restriction is you have to spend a turn not moving at all before you can use feline agility again a tier if you want to hit hard and then get out of there fast to Maxi is the best you can do so the total's big thing is their shell sure they get improved on arm strikes but nobody cares your AC is just set at 17. now sure you can't wear armor but you can still hold a shield so the total is basically the game's way of saying look no matter what your stats are you can start the game at level one with an AC of 19. any spellcaster who normally has to choose between dexterity and Constitution doesn't have to just pick total and your AC will be amazing they also get shell defense where you can Retreat into your shell for a plus four to AC but you full prone and you can't take any actions honestly it kind of sucks unless you're trying to hide from ranged attackers and you have a powerful concentration spell like animate objects or conjure beasts to deal damage for you Turtles are a tip they're a great choice if you don't know what you're doing with your stats and you also don't want to die so here's another underrated race Triton are everything sea elves wish they could be you get 30-foot swim speed dark vision resistance to cold damage and the big feature Emissary of the sea that means any Beast Elemental or monstrosity with a swim speed can understand you which is actually quite a lot of creatures and then you also get some great spells fog cloud is fantastic especially for Fighters and Rangers with the blind fighting style and gust of wind and waterwalk are decent and average respectively you can cast all of those once each per day Triton might even be S tier in campaigns with lots of water but in general campaigns there are solid b-tier option snake people are busted just like satyr yuanti got a Nerf to their magic resistance and also like satyr UNT are still completely insane dark vision resistance to poison advantage on saves against being poisoned and a free casting of suggestion every day they can also cast the spell animal friendship but only targeting snakes so if you like snakes this is fine I guess suggestion is still a fantastic spell though and all the Auntie abilities are great on any build it goes to show just how busted these guys were that even after a ton of Nerf they're still in s tier easy s s for snakes but if you want to play more awesome races why not download the free casting race from my website link below plus you can get awesome merch there too amazing quality sustainably made and ethically produced but it is only available for a
