[Music] how's it going gang today we are driving around in what i like to call the bitmobile in spirit of today's video because today we are finally ranking the mario kart games this is easily mario's most popular spin-off series with an entry on literally every home and handheld nintendo console since the series started for this list i am just looking at the main eight console versions of mario kart and also for the sake of redundancy i'm just going to include the deluxe version of mario kart 8 since it's pretty well the same version as the wii u one but with more stuff in it i do want to mention that previously i said that if my paper mario ranking video got 75 likes then i would make this mario kart video and you guys blew that goal away so thank you for that and originally i was gonna take a break from mario rankings after this video but there were a lot of comments asking me to rank the mario party games so 200 likes on this video i'll rank those mario party games it's a deal and okay i'm just gonna make this a thing now but at the end of this ranking video i'm announcing the next series of games i'm gonna rank so with all this intro stuff out of the way let's get right into this is is that a banana on the road [Music] all right back in the studio enough of this driving business so let's get this video started with 8 mario games this time the one that comes in last place is the same one that started it all yes the original super mario kart while it did kick off the entire series filled with so many great games the biggest thing that holds this game back is how incredibly dated it is but before i harp on it i have to mention all the unique things this game introduced for kart racers in general at the time see nintendo didn't just want to make a racing game with generic cars going through generic landscapes like other kart racers at the time they thought why not take all the mario characters put them in carts and throw some items in there to use against your opponents and what an interesting element that these items introduced now you're not just concerned where you are in the race but now more than ever you are concerned where every other racer is this is because you could strategize when to use your best items who to use them on and if someone else was going to hit you with an item this was a unique gameplay concept never seen an eraser before i think hopefully and at the time that was awesome it was great but now well we've come a long way to say the least i mean for starters just look at this game what you see is what you get here folks at times the graphics can literally be painful to look at which is bad enough in its own right but it can also make it hard to tell where the turns are or how much space there is in between things what doesn't help this is your field of view because look how much room the map takes up did it really need to take up half the screen guys i can barely see as is and you do this to me on top of this the controls can feel pretty stiff too which doesn't help its cause i'll tell you that but overall this game introduced some great concepts at the time but it's aged like sour milk so we just looked at the first home console version of mario kart but what if you're on the move well why don't we look at the first handheld version of mario kart thank you we're not squished to half a screen anymore this is mario kart super circuit for the game boy advance i would describe this game as the more polished and well-made version of the original mario kart the controls are a lot better this time turning is easier to pull off and they even added these arrows before turns if you really can't see because of the depth perception which is still kind of an issue not gonna lie but it helps also while the track layouts are still kind of flat and feel somewhat similar the visuals on the other hand were definitely an improvement you can tell they really use the hardware to its max with some interesting backgrounds and animated sprites look at this location ribbon road you're driving on this one long giant ribbon with presents in the background all while you're in this like dreamlike fantasy atmosphere maybe you're supposed to be a kid dreaming about getting a better mario kart game okay i'll stop the audio was a lot better too all the characters had voices and there were a lot more sound effects in general however at the end of the day what really holds these two games back is the hardware that they were on for this kind of game it is crucial to have 3d visuals and without it the quality takes a serious dip sure you can try and fake it with mode 7 or whatever but nothing beats real 3d except for like 40 maybe but until we get there nothing beats real 3d and that's the main reason that these two are at the bottom of the list [Music] now that the 2d games are out of the way we just have the 3d versions left and we started off by looking at the first home console version then the first handheld version and now the first 3d version i swear i didn't plan this list like this mario kart 64 for the nintendo 64. now guys you gotta understand something it actually pains me to put this game this low on the list because i really like mario kart 64 but it is still more primitive compared to the newer games let's start with the good the tracks are what literally makes this game for me some standout ones being calamari desert where you have a nice wild west desert aesthetic during a sunset and some trains are going by then there's sherbet land where you're sliding around on ice avoiding penguins from mario 64 and there were really cool reflection effects on the ice and of course i couldn't forget to make note of rainbow road this might just be my favorite iteration of rainbow road ever this felt like a celebration of the mario franchise with neon characters appearing and beautiful music this track almost had a mystical dreamlike vibe to it and it was so long but in a good way though because the racer's position could always change what a bold move to make this track like three times the length of a normal one plus a lot of the times they just put these secrets in tracks you can go take an alternate route on the peach's castle course and actually go right up to the castle for mario 64. also if you play mirror mode and get toad's turnpike well now the cars are mirrored too and come right at you the only other mode really was the battle mode and the tracks were pretty solid in this mode too just not as good as the main ones definitely a fun mode to play with friends and that's really about it for this game because it was on the nintendo 64 and there were so many racers moving around they had to use 2d sprites and they mixed it with a 3d background and because of this well the characters kind of look like ass which is jarring to look at nowadays but overall this game still does provide simple emphasis on simple mario kart fun now we're getting to a point in the list where the mario kart games are all very solid additions we're also getting to a point where nintendo ran out of subtitles for the game and just started using numbers yes mario kart 7 the first game to use this new naming convention and the first mario kart on the 3ds as as well as the only mario kart on the 3ds regardless it was a really polished handheld version it felt great to control and all the tracks played out pretty well the new feature this time around was the addition of flying and going underwater a concept totally unique to racing games that has never been done before okay it wasn't all that much but it provided unique hints to tracks that made it more interesting to repeat the races maybe there's an alternate water route or different places to land on your glider who knows the game's visuals looked really good at the time too especially since it was on a handheld version i remember thinking that this game looked as good as the wii one which was the home console version of mario kart when this game came out what a time it was before the switch eh some of the best tracks in this game were music park where you could play the piano woo hoo island which was the hub world in wii sports resort and a really great version of rainbow road complete with saturn rings and a moon landing but at the end of the day when playing this game i eventually just kind of thought well this is mario kart while fun it doesn't really do anything necessarily better or that different compared to previous versions like the wii one or gamecube and a lot of the features in those versions were stripped out or removed in this game leaving really only the grand prix and battle modes there were literally no extra side modes which was pretty disappointing all in all this game was a very solid addition but didn't really do that much to innovate or change the series in any way it was just mario kart so now we're getting to the game with easily the most innovative controls in the entire series and that game is of course mario kart wii yes this one was from the future or something because it had one-to-one steering by using the wii controller in the wii wheel okay it was more like one to five steering because it probably gave you one-fifth of the normal precision but let's just say i'm glad they had a gamecube controller option one of the new additions that this game had was that you could ride motorbikes now they were a pretty fun addition that changed the gameplay a bit but not too much you could do wheelies now to increase your speed during straightaways but you don't get as many boosts on your drifts so it was really just a slight variance in gameplay you mainly just chose them to look cool let's be honest maybe this game should have been called mario kart and bike's wii but it doesn't necessarily roll off the tongue that well so that's understandable some of the standout tracks in this game were coconut mall where you were riding up escalators and cutting through stores wario's gold mine that had a really interesting aesthetic and perfectly fit wario and maple treeway because i just like fall okay and cause you're driving up trees and going through tree houses so that was pretty cool too the online mode in this game was actually functional this time and that was awesome for the wii especially definitely a great feature another minor addition that they added to this game is now you could perform tricks whenever you go off jumps this felt satisfying to time correctly and it gave you a little boost after the jump so it was a welcome addition all in all this game introduced a few minor additions here and there to fine-tune the core gameplay nothing too major but a lot of these features were kept in ever since so we're starting to run out of games with only three contenders left and i will say that these games are all fantastic in their own right but the game that has to be knocked out first is mario kart ds yeah this game is like the best handheld mario kart you could tell they really wanted to make a great mario kart with the amount of effort they put in this this was a huge leap for the handheld mario games considering that the last one was in 2d and was very basic i find this game controls a bit different than the other mario karts it takes more skill this time to master the drifting and how each of the cars feel also all of the characters felt really different from one another which was good when i chose a big guy i could easily push people away but felt slower on the turns and to contrast when i was a small boy i could turn easily but got tossed around more this just led to more strategies when choosing a character also for the first time ever and since there was a mission mode why hasn't this returned it was a great little mode to have in this game that provided unique challenges for you to complete and it even had boss battles like what when have you ever seen this in mario kart bring them back already the ds version had some really standout tracks as well like they turned the airships from mario 3 into a track it starts with you boarding the ship and then exploring the various areas in the ship and i cannot mention this game without talking about the waluigi's pinball track such a simple concept but a very effective one you're a literal pinball you start by being launched up the machine then move through the track with your other pinball brothers and end in a big area with a bunch of bumpers and balls flying around just like an actual machine even the boost pads and other sound effects were all changed to have a more pinball arcade sound just for this one track this is what i mean about them really putting effort into this game so the final two games this was a very close call and i'm not even saying that just to build the pipe or whatever but no this was a very close call the game that is going to take the second place spot is mario kart double dash like the title implies there is double of everything double item boxes double characters on your cart double well actually that's about it but these small changes really add a unique twist on the main gameplay see each of your characters could store items now so if you got a boost mushroom or something you could save it in one slot and still collect item boxes in the other this makes item management a lot more important in the game also there were these like double item boxes which gave you two items but they were strategically placed on longer paths like the edge of curves to give players a bigger payout for taking the longer way this just provided an extra layer of strategy in the game also you know it's just neat that you can choose two characters at once now you can build a cool ass squad to ride around in your cool ass whip yo it was fun to mix and match the various character combinations okay something i would really like to see brought back even if it's just like an extra mode or something i really enjoyed the pace of this game too it just seemed a lot faster when driving and making turns plus even when you get hit by an item you still keep some of that momentum so it's not as annoying unlike the games where it brings your pace to a halt some of the greatest tracks in this game were dk mountain where you got shot up the mountain then drove down the side with various bumps and turns daisy cruiser where you're literally just on this cruise ship going through the various decks and of course baby park there has literally never been another track quite like this one really not much to it it's a tiny track that just brings pure chaos especially with the double items in this game double dash was probably the most unique mario kart and a fantastic game to play in a party yup mario kart 8 deluxe again this was a very tough call while double dash did have more unique mechanics i had to choose mario kart 8 deluxe because of the tons of content fine-tuned gameplay and actually a nintendo game with good online this game's pretty insane plus they wanted to make this game more than just mario kart with the addition of characters and tracks from other nintendo franchises there's like zelda cart splatoon cart animal crossing cart pretty soon we're just gonna see super smash brothers ultimate cart with every nintendo franchise there was so much creativity just shoved in this game like they really worked hard on the minor details this made each track feel like you're in a different part of the mushroom kingdom in a believable connected world some standout tracks in this game were hyrule circuit literally such a great tribute to the legend of zelda franchise complete with zelda sound effects enemies and the coins are now rupees dolphin shoals which had a really nice balance between underwater and above water gameplay and of course there's also mount wario that had so many different parts to it you start off in a plane that drops you at the peak of the mountain then you go through some caves on the side of a dam through a forest and finish with a skiing section what a track plus there were just so many different cups tracks and characters in this game more than any other mario kart there was a grand total of 41 characters and 48 unique tracks that's crazy i know this was partly because it had all the dlc from the wii u one in this game but it still was sold as the same price as a normal switch game so we count those plus yes this game fixed one of the biggest flaws in the original being the battle mode so that was very much appreciated and those are my thoughts on the mario kart game so now that we're done ranking this video it's time to move on to a new set of games to rank and the next series that i'm gonna be ranking is wait a sec what is that [Music] hmm it's like uh a treasure map of some sort and okay there's my location and it leads to ranking 3d zelda games forest weird name but i think i should head there next [Music] you
