don't really go to Brooklyn like that I know but you know and I don't think I was invited to that show to be whole you got to get the personal joints you know we know nobody Shawn you know we were torn it's all over the place you just kind of wake up and go with it you know I got invited to that show Rory told me the day of and the day of the side another Gauri said yo wild late tonight at Brooklyn warehouse or one of those places I don't really love like that well you don't love Brooklyn at all the shows I've been to in Brooklyn at the venues that they have for us in Brooklyn I don't love them and seems like that's where the industry targets now cuz that's where all the cool kids are oh they don't really they don't really do [ __ ] in Manhattan the city like anymore what you got Irving ting Plaza I mean urban Plaza BB King's I don't see that so your clothes I'll be bikinis in there yes see exactly oh that's one reason that was the show back turned or the wall couldn't move another reason I was glad I didn't go was a seat you people that you support shining environment why I saw you shot it not like you know new album Oh like then I came I came here and fly the show and do that but I understand you've got a lot you got your media man now but you got a lot going on ain't no love lost did you did you do did you do any any any songs that I haven't seen you do yeah no album you didn't do out yeah and I haven't seen that yet mmm how did it feel performing a new music oh it's always it's always good like everything like it's always reassuring I guess when you do you do like you know new records and people who gravitate home especially when they're like em but sandwiched in between my two super popular records and they still hold their own you know it's biggest reassuring how often would you say that you need to be reassured I don't know as an artist as a not yeah as an artist own Miep I find it in different ways maybe I would you know like it could be something you hear your record on the radio like multiple times in a day you know or it could be something as simple as somebody genuine that comes up to you in the street and like tells you they they're impacted by your music or else it could be the concert it could be just hearing something that nobody's heard and just knowing that it's just amazing there's different ways well what's your favorite way to get reassure me I think the fan I think I think any any way for real but I don't know it unfortunately it's a mixture between like like going platinum I do like that I don't like that like I just like to know that it's all right cool like all right I've achieved this miles now and um where if you know you've done it where forward from the from the know from from the shows but even though you've done it even though you've already gone it's never I don't know it gets old I wouldn't know I never get old well for me just it's just a good feeling it's like I cou you know this is you always wanted you know and do it on your own terms I ain't really tough to do it nobody else way so does it have the does it have an adverse effect if the numbers don't go where you picture them going away when you need them to be not really now how can an awesome I mean no it's good it's reassuring it's reassuring when it does happen but it you know I'm not gonna be over the obsessed with the outcome yeah how was the rest of the tour good I just got back from the UK de Paris London Amsterdam everything sold out it was good to be back in Europe has been like seven years and so did her shows over here was that was there ever a time where where cuz you say everything is selling out but I always assume everything to sell out oh the shows I've seen is so loud it was there every time with it was a pressure to sell out the shoals blah I've always been doing pretty good with torrent but some use doing some bigger things on his own some smaller but some bigger than I've done even a Charlotte I think Charlotte like is in two days and it's like 2,200 mmm I'm saying in that joint sold out like she could go so I mean that's big [ __ ] yeah but you know I always want to do bigger and better I always want to keep you know growing evolving what does that look like for you um everything that I've accomplished do it times two I guess in theory not literally in times 2 but like you know everything that I've accomplished continue to do it and continue to do it like but only in the field of music everything what was everything all right thing that up everything that I put my angle or anything that I'm into which is what that's what I'm that's what I'm asking as a businessman as a businessman as an artist as a writer ghostwriter whether you wanna call it um producer director whatever I put my hands on think those are things that I've been starting to put my hands on so you know I want to make sure I do those even bigger I'm better Black History Month mm-hmm your record sue me how do you feel about I like it do you think that I'm saying the word black there's a rough people wrong way into mainstream like having a look that says sue me I'm room for everybody's black do you think that is it rubs some people from I think black yeah rubs same people wrong I said that on an interview oh when I was just saying like you know when you say black I better black as you say confidently as a black person some people get turned off by that [ __ ] some people like it's not really like and I know people gonna hear this like what the [ __ ] you talking about like you being in rooms where it's like super powerful non-black people you say like black or like even when I played sue me in some meetings before the album came out I could just see it I think it's like like this is an insult like him saying is it's like I'm saying um keeping them black girl magic when I say white boy make more um same job as you I know [ __ ] took that like they didn't want you [ __ ] like that especially on the radio 100 times a day do you think that has an effect on you um and your in your career I think I was a little naive thinking I think I was a little naive thinking it would be like fully embraced by mainstream what black black [ __ ] the black girl manager BGM or assuming like I might have been a little bit naive like I'm not it might over estimate it you know I'm saying I didn't think it was gonna be such an uphill battle was like trying to give those songs to the world and let it let it grow and get it in people's radar whatever but now you've got the support for this record it's the next record right LOV that is the record it's a single right now I said the next one oh I pick the next single but I'm shooting it up I haven't really know what something is still going it's just left up 15 or urban so we let it sit for a little bit all right I ain't cooking mixing mediate so this is my second single I love you well it would make sense to get to sue me right I mean it takes me not gonna be the guy to ignore the obvious writing on the wall that the alley right by the rim well because Black History Month because of blank everything wale yeah I'm just asking because of black everything not just tomorrow when when when when would a job one wooden job as a single well that would be on you to decide I think it ain't gonna be no time soon but I just know I got to see where they would it feel like where I'm at everybody I'm when that time sue me would definitely be going against the grain with radio I know I'm not going I think that's gonna be more of a cultural thing it ain't gonna be one of them joints it's like shooting up the charts know that for a fact and you're still playing actively playing the radio game um I mean it's really all I know all I know was the get ready to drive album submitted a single push the single hit the road drop down that's all I know for real and I'm not sure I don't think anybody has showed me personally me personally how to do it another way now if I was taught or somebody showed me how to do it another way and I was confident in the way then that'd be different well the radio games all enough wouldn't wouldn't it be somebody's now how many playlists you see me I don't look at playlist wallet is that's the new that's that's the only other thing is play listen sugar well yeah I would assume that it would be somebody's job to show you the tricks in the trade of playlists and streaming and all the DSP tricks the same way to radio ad the tricks no wouldn't it be somebody at the labels jump to focus on stream on work at the label I don't know yes you do I don't really I don't I don't get in trouble so I don't want to be got it okay got it got it but that's it there is a job like that might be open to learning but I mean like literally all I know since I got in this that routine I'm saying other than that just go rogue and just drop mixtapes and so you ready to drop out that's another thing I've been doing I was always going that seems boring yeah I don't know okay but I said that seems boring and I want you to respond to that what seems boring all of the repetition in the [ __ ] that you just named it doesn't I'm not like it's a cycle like you could do it in your sleep not definitely can have ain't boys work working always fine you you you are confusing me in wale you Watson I am i we're gonna [ __ ] I'm aware of it though I'm pretty where you live in do you live in the art side of the art or the other side of it which is business and numbers and it's a job because you don't sound like it's a job when I hear you rap but you sound full of life you sound at peace you sound at your most comfortable doing probably one of the things that you do best and that's how it sounds it sounds confident in person they don't sound like the same person with all this it's a job that you talk about I mean you say it sounds boring mother doing it in the cycle I'm just saying that's like any job is a cycle any job that you do look isn't this like if you build an MBA you have your offseason then you start working out have you getting ready for the final of the game I quit like what are you saying no I love I love rap music I don't like the business I'm not too fond of the business over here there we go somebody's making making sure you get all this confusing looks off so when they cut away it could be any blade well they I don't I don't have a interview face or an interview voice I mean I made I imagine that camera was looking at you when you do confusing faces you gave me like three times but I don't cut too confusing faces I mean you give me like a like long pauses so it makes me feel like you're kind of trying to make sure that I'm one of them stick that could just be be over analysed that that's your paranoia probably maybe are you normally paranoid no I don't think so what do you think about what uh I don't know if that was called cherry good said that so let me now put that on him but whoever said that the formulaic way of making singles melodic singles featuring R&B ex is dated and dead I [Music] don't believe that to be true necessarily I don't believe that to be true maybe for some people well I mean we definitely live any time where it's less frequent weird those types of songs or less frequent yeah like less frequent as singles or less frequent as charting or trending up whatever they lived a lot less you know rap is more like super track like everybody's even the pop stars is linking up with track trying to do trap stuff working with try producers so those kind of songs are less frequent is that a field that you ever would ever venture into those those style of records I mean I'm I'm saying so I was I was just wrapping whatever sometimes I'm in a student and I just don't want to go through beats are there like whatever y'all pull up I'm gonna write soon cuz I just hate sitting listen to be so I I probably got a couple records like that and it's up give me give me some of the would you consider on chill to be a slow burner not that came out the gates there's more crazy as far as the feedback those numbers wise yeah I mean it was it was it took up for some reason it took a while to get on the charts but when they got there it was it was like not there it was really hot so I don't know how they are as Hepler when I got when they got there was just didn't didn't creep up there just one how did that feel um it was a good feeling I still don't really all the way to understand how Bilbo it works I'm saying but we're gonna get into billboard to at some point but it was a good fun I know I'm saying like this Shazam's all over the country and all that that might like my [ __ ] was like geez this man I hate when you [ __ ] make this difficult coming off of the album before the [ __ ] album that's doing great right now right when there were rumors that maybe while a has lost a step maybe while a spin is not as sharp as it once was and maybe while a is not as valuable as he once was and then you caught another hit so when I ask you how it feels I don't think I am NOT looking for this shallow laid-back [ __ ] that you've given everybody else I am looking for the deeper answer the deeper answer to how did it feel to help us how does it feel to prove your detractors wrong after a decade in the game after bouncing from label to label I don't look at it like that well how do you look at it is what I'm a spell good all the numbers the numbers told me it did what the [ __ ] what are you talking about no I don't want the industry to have made you into like some facsimile of yourself what are you saying I felt good to do to get a record there Charlie to come I didn't I wasn't I didn't feel like oh my god I gotta drop this right you know I'm not valuable to here proper I never how did it feel before you put it out then when you did walk you through it since you wanted raise your voices [ __ ] cuz I want to have a compelling interview and not do all this [ __ ] coffee passive-aggressive [ __ ] we doing [ __ ] I'm doing I kind of think before I speak now so give it to me the creation of the record did you know we didn't know what it was when I when I left Atlanta and I was doing some independent thing for a while I weren't really worried I went out to LA and I made it it's complicated ep the fans enjoyed it they didn't even really know I wasn't even signed Atlantic no more then I drop self-promotion you know when that Jenna was like like more rap yeah I'm saying and everyday I had a call from every every other label there's one leg board anything called I had an offer when I soon as I left Atlantic it was too low and I was like you know where I'm I don't really need I can whatever and you know I was Indian I was making money like crazy you know I'm saying and I was just dropping a piece and then dropped black Barney that John was doing it did it did what I had to do and then don't know if that was too low as from a major huh the offer that was too low is from the end yeah so um so then I um I narrowed it down to two labels you know a lot of thinking I just went with Warner Brothers and then um I started I mean I never stopped recording I never stopped recording so I walked in there with a rack of burgers and then uh I cut that jump and we knew it's gonna be single for a while but [ __ ] was waiting for me to be done with album or get closer to being done with album and I'm gonna make it I just right into the alright I'll keep going even when I sum it up I'm still going so also all at you and your entire squad and the label or maybe not to label y'all confidence was in this record long before I was confident in a lot of records on my my can i really didn't know like I really I wasn't really like that was one of my least concerns like I was just like that I was good we good we straight with the whoop and then when we knew he's gonna put it out I was just like I cool here goes nothing I'm like I'm like I know it's gonna be I know it's gonna go off when I'm saying and then when they went oh I I never once was like ma'am i'ma show [ __ ] with this one i'ma watch this like I never was like that not not even a little bit I wasn't really thinking like that someone that did I was just like duh what is this [ __ ] gonna be on billboard like maybe she going crazy I can feel it so when it is all cool all right I wasn't haha I'm saying but it do feel good - in retrospect when people bring it up like you know how you feel like you Sean because I was in I didn't think [ __ ] was counting me out for real I didn't but now when people say it when people tell me you know there's another person that kind of insinuated what you just said and I started thinking about it and I was like oh you know really you know because um Sean had a platinum single on the - and I think running back but to be gold or if it's not gold already and my love is gold um saying so what that album was impeccable thank you I appreciate I wanted to do something fun with their joint but [ __ ] don't like [ __ ] like me and there's that part no but I was in a bad place with Atlantic when I joined was all but that's exactly what I was about to ask you I don't I don't even think they thought I was done I don't think they thought it was like they thought like that I was talking to Kaiser man shot in microcosm I was talking to him he was like um think it was like- yeah I was just six months high Kaiser we love you little burger feels like that I was six months too early it was just six months in early like the GZ record it was just a little bit the J Balvin [ __ ] [ __ ] like it's on there yes do what lepre like you know saying she that Jung was this early how do you feel when labels are able to admit to their mistakes privately I don't know if I don't know we're never doing you know that um they don't really got the flat foam for real like ain't nobody sitting like Picasso down to be like y'all what you think Michael Kaiser even though you should try to get him on the shoulder never come py sure you want to do we never do my shows maybe dad was to do it I don't think any of the exact Allison knows would do much in Dallas Dallas the Dallas Dallas been putting in work - I think Dallas you some honest answers don't I would love to have him Dallas you should come that was mine wherever yet what was the if they're able to if they're able to make that type of admission and what went wrong in that in that religion doctor we're wrong I just feel like it was business things those business things that that are outside of my control um [ __ ] it didn't really have nothing to do with the creation of yeah music or anything you know I mean I have my own things I was like my frustration it took over or to go.very then I said my frustration took over like you know like I had I can't believe legally speaking or anything but then don't I had to situate I know I just had a my daughter and I just I got I lost a lot of money on some paperwork stuff with somebody and it just put me in it just it was it was strong I was traumatized because Here I am holding my my two week old daughter and I'm hearing that I'll just you know go six figures high six figures on some paperwork stuff it just put me in I was not fun to be around she's [ __ ] like that I could tell why you feel like this she did a job and I was scared I was a little scared back then um and then I just remember the record coming out and like I remember I remember we talked that night we had the genius event mm-hmm I don't know it was you or somebody else but I feel like I was you that I was like y'all know you the person was like this is this is your only roll out thing that wasn't me okay don't put that on me that well I I just remember me and I just I mean it stuck with me like mm-hmm I mean it wasn't much of a rollout but I don't want to be like that I like the label the label the label like Atlanta gives a wonderful label like it's you know look how much success that got Rotty the girl is oh they got me a boogie there and all these things happening so I just think that um there's a combination of things like you know Julie green world Juliette Jones and Dallas Mike that was all all of them everything was a one it's just a combination of business with something I had not in control of and what I was going through on another side as far as like my situation and just having the pressure of having a newborn and over there I learned that a lot of fans have a hard time with understanding of how labels work subsidiaries just the business aspect of things looks like pilots though they seem to be very fond of it ya know it's the politics like like politics like very buddy wanna vote when a vote when a vote but it's like do we really know what's going on here where everything goes and all that like it gets so fancy at the top where you just like I'm just happy to be here you know I'm saying like you're not really like seeking information and stuff like that and I'm a victim of that too sometimes but it's just like when you so obsessed with the art and you got passionate for it and you just wanted to get it in people hands you kind of just like overlooked a lot of that stuff as best as you can right now can you explain to me and anybody else stupid out there the difference between Atlantic and Warner as it pertains to you number one and two how the how mm gs business situation may have affected the outcome of things with you label wise I really can't get in today I really don't even know for you know at the end of the day labels are [Music] betting Jesus mm she's a family right yeah label labels are like a business partner yes I'm saying like they got the they got it they got a working staff I mean so what mm geez more like when I hang with Ross I don't really like gonna be looking at him I go he's like my co-pilot and everything like on the business like that's my man like it's Fame yeah I'm saying like that's a different kind of do y'all still buy Christmas gifts for the people that delayed the label Department people why is that like a joke no I'm seriously asking how you know we ever did it because I'm in the music business oh no I think I get gifts for some people I don't know where Ross do okay Nick brought me probably give gifts to some billionaire the big has been that close no listen I heard we're also good real good yes I know good gifts once a kid I'll take care of the crew and he seem like you seem like a good guy so good rough mm-hmm how actually before I get that knee of that MMG [ __ ] early he was talking about fear mm-hmm which prompts me to ask in hindsight can you walk me through some of the times in your career where you were scared but when you were operating from a place of fear to be honest like it's weird because when I'm gonna go when I'm in go mode I don't really I'm not really I don't have that I don't like when I'm just in a zone like in the creative space when I feel so good about what I'm making daily like you know I'm saying I don't really have that at all like I just be like I but I got a loyal like super like loyal fan base that like kind of shields me from like some of the ills of like like being truly scared of something career-wise I never really like I don't know if anybody can really operate if they're scared like on a high level I don't know if anybody really could because at the end of the day even when I left Atlantic I had a offer right there like I could have just went without music but I just I was like nah nah that's too low let's see how does anything work I never was really fearful and even when I got dropped my minutes code like I was never you turn I was I was I was 25 years old and I was on tour everywhere overseas everywhere like I have records with ti Gucci God I was in the South I was like I was just feeling the love I had money in my pocket I really don't believe I went really tripping I didn't really even feel I didn't even really realize but being dropped felt like because by the time I really truly truly was like damn I'm dropped no-hands was like going crazy like before I had time to stop me like that I'm making you not even sign no more no interest going crazy and I made more about nothing in that time so it's like by the time I really feel he believes like then I'll drop I was like two days from putting up more of our nothing and that [ __ ] broke Zee share she broke the sheriff [ __ ] was [ __ ] everywhere like this area but most of my fans favorite projects I'd be feeling like when y'all when when y'all shoot super successful artists start talking all this success should the job fair right I'll be feeling like well for them to truly believe that wouldn't they just go independent and put it all on them like when you say when I'm gonna go mo I'm in go mold and it's um me think about being independent and you just I got a little taste of it now you want to be in the game though some if I can speak to that yeah so biggest one being a game I know I'm one of the nicest [ __ ] you know no ever I'm saying like and you want to be in the game like if something is that that rap music is Voki like a lick for them it's one of the many things that they do and if that's your that's your mentality and ease the way like if you [ __ ] it's not your huh but something is gonna be in the game you know I'm saying being in the game is being like you know it was being in the kitchen like you know being competitive making records and like you know putting them out to a larger audience I don't think I don't think that um ending is I don't think I'm ready for that indeed ona on a larger scale because I don't have to I don't have a team around me like I don't have a personal dish one salary personal debt on salary you know in a in our on salary like I don't have all those things with me so I was like going indie would be a headache but the money would be great but it'd probably just be like a lot of you know cuz I like you know I need a you know you need to read a good a good publicist you need a good product manager you need a good somebody who can make a phone call and get an extra 50 grand for a video you know I'm saying yeah that we need those things that would be real helpful yeah I'm gonna think about it just drop videos with my [ __ ] cue cards and [ __ ] drop them on the phone and [ __ ] like that but um you know and maybe I'm selling myself short but I don't think I can [ __ ] I couldn't I couldn't even get home late night TV this album I did Trevor Noah yesterday oh don't feel bad late night TV stuff ya know I've been trying for 17 years oh you wanna do late night TV still oh now you just got me into some [ __ ] you gonna perform no I don't want performing I think you still want to do it a little bit I don't a little bit tiny bit I don't I'm not conflicted like you rappers no I don't want I don't want to do it I just think that I just think they're like you inspired so many of us you know saying you inspire so many of us to like talk about this [ __ ] that's uncomfortable to talk about right and it's like when you when you when you was that your I hate to say 'pete because I think it I don't think me I don't think you can ever be at your peak in music because you can come back DeAngelo came did it fits in your hiatus and drop something there's no peak but I just think that you made it you made a mine you made a desert you made it easier to talk about as a black man first of all as a black man deep brain hears so much wrong with all of these music oh listen but let me just get to what I'm saying you made easier for a lot negative talk about a feeling especially as a black man and my negative like look it's not like you was used from the distrust later like you from a place where it's like it's hyper masculine i purr flashy and he was talking about [ __ ] that was kind of like [ __ ] wasn't really talking about any hair bars and but it just wasn't the time for where that [ __ ] was like super acceptable or it was in the time where you can monetize that much like you'll be up right now you could if if it was like that back then you could have dropped like one song on one of them projects dope dope dope video you're a good interview you drop that [ __ ] and make [ __ ] 50/50 bands off the type of [ __ ] I believe stars are born or picked both they're born and then picked bornus be born like okay my [ __ ] cold you know about 100 mile [ __ ] cold [ __ ] that don't get no roses okay no I don't think that I don't think some of us could ever really peak in the music business because I don't think the music business is designed for black people to peak which mean I don't think that Warner will ever show you the books and give you anything that will help you and your new renegotiations I don't think that artists have a smidgen of an idea of just how profitable they are to the labels and anything you need to climb further up the ladder they kind of have to give it to you it's a never-ending game of tug and tug of tug of war so how can you peak in music unless somebody on the other side wants you to peak that's my question music like you you were talking about me and music and you use the word peak well then what do you call where I am but I'm current I don't think I don't like I said I don't like to use the word peak because it's not use that word it's never it's like this it's like this but you said you don't like to use it because in music yours 1a2 wet you can always come from noise and always go about your have you if if you really about this [ __ ] not if you want some gimmick [ __ ] if he wants a gimmick [ __ ] that's nice won't come and go pink for me and I feel like a broken record when I say this because I've said it so much is I was miserable when I was making music actually I think especially in the second this era right now most of y'all [ __ ] to be miserable too but if y'all if you right now first of all it be times three of what was going on back then because you way you was breaking [ __ ] down is part is the it's in vogue right now talking about like like things that aren't like traditional you know it's not always happy you know the melancholy love [ __ ] or emotional or [ __ ] whatever like that's involved right now you know I'm saying and again it's a kind of about like there's so much into our lives because of the social media [ __ ] and you know how to you know how to do you know how to be on the other end of interviews you know autumn I guess what I'm trying to say is when you want to you know how to be very like you know how to be like it to make [ __ ] wanna [ __ ] with you you know how to do that but you also got to make them I'm a charming Virgo yeah you know I don't know from this tournament you're a charming Virgo as well oh well thank you I appreciate that that opinion but sometimes this is one with the Lord perfect this is one of the things that cause my whole [ __ ] like it's just being uncomfortable curve I didn't used to really smoke like that and I drink like seldomly but it's like you do so many years in the game right and it's like you try so hard to be like I want these people to [ __ ] for me because I don't want them to say nothing bad about me to other people you try so hard at that and then it's like it get back to you they say it anyway they get back to you like yo man 89 rocking ones over there because uh and in our rocket uh and like enough people say they're in a snowball and it's like broke what I do always one person when he speaks in the room I forgot or like I didn't catch that person so when my mind is like when I'm doing stuff press and stuff like that I'm like man I just hope that [ __ ] it's not not like man I don't [ __ ] with this [ __ ] like like he's there right what they say about she was like damn I wish I understood how much I would I didn't I don't want it to be like that like and then it it starts to [ __ ] with your head like you go onto an interview in this light alright alright I'm about to go do this you'll not be in the collar I'm about to go to here and make sure in my mind I go make sure you save yourself thereby make sure you know they have nothing bad to say about you when you leave and [ __ ] like that and and that causes that causes that causes paranoid that's a lie and it makes you a slave to the art form I just don't feel like I have the luxury of saying [ __ ] it I don't have the luxury of that you know somebody I'm just deep down inside I honestly don't want nobody to be like like upset or feel lesser than I don't I just don't generally I don't want that did you come away with some of this some of this revelation after the complex blow up a little bad it was significantly after that joint dam really like I was always very grateful but
