hello everyone and welcome to maple leaf ESL my name is Andrew and thank you for joining me here in the classroom today for today's lesson I want to take a look at phrasal verbs with the expression move so for this lesson I've chosen seven different phrasal verbs and as always I want to look at definitions and of course many different examples okay so let's see if we can get started here the first one says move away and the definition is to move to a new household okay alright so imagine I had a friend he lived next door to me but then he moved away right so this means he moved to a new house or a new apartment okay but when we use move away it often sounds like somebody moves to a new city or a new town or a new country even right so if I say oh my best friend moved away last year it means probably that my best friend moved out of this city and moved to a new city or town or whatever right so to move away often means to move to a new place not just a new house but a completely new city or town okay next one says move in and this one's pretty simple it says to begin occupying a new residence or office okay we can really only use this one in one way right if I'm moving into a new apartment on Friday that means I will begin living in a new apartment so I'll move all my furniture and all my clothes and everything else so if I'm moving in next Friday again I'm gonna begin living in a new apartment or new house next Friday okay same thing I also wrote office if my company is moving to a new office next week I could say oh we're moving in to a new office next week or removing next Monday right so again it can be a house or apartment or it could be an office okay next one says move in on and the definition there I wrote is to get closer to someone or something in order to take control of it okay I want to talk about a couple of different examples the first example think about the military okay imagine a military is trying to take control of a city okay so they're moving closer to the city to try and maybe you know fight the enemy and take control of that city so the military is moving in on the city right so they're getting closer to it because they want to control that city okay think about a different example okay imagine I have a girlfriend okay and she's my girlfriend okay but there's another guy and he likes my girlfriend okay and he's trying to steal this girlfriend from me right he's trying to take the girlfriend from me so that he can be girlfriends he can be you know they can be his new girlfriend so I might say this guy is moving in on my girlfriend right so he's trying to get closer to my girlfriend so that he can take control of the situation right so that he can be in a relationship with her and not me so to take control of the situation from me so if he's trying to move in on my girlfriend he's trying to steal my girlfriend right he's trying to take my girlfriend so we have those two kind of different ways that we can use move in on but in both situations somebody or a group of people are trying to get closer to something in order to take control of it okay next one says move on and I actually wrote two different definite for this one the first one says to stop doing one thing and start another okay think about a meeting okay imagine in our meeting we need to discuss the budget and we need to discuss a schedule okay so we we discussed the budget for about ten minutes okay and then the leader or the manager says okay I think we're finished discussing the budget should we move on to the schedule right so should we stop discussing the budget and start discussing the schedule so let's move on to the schedule or let's move on to something new right so we're gonna stop doing this and start doing something else right again I could be having a discussion with somebody no it's okay let's move on to a new topic right so let's start discussing something different and stop discussing this topic okay I put a second definition there it says to tell someone to leave a place okay this is often used as a command okay imagine the police okay there's a car accident and there's many people standing around and they're looking at the car accident but the police they want everybody to leave so the police might say okay everybody move on there's nothing to see here please move on right so please move on please leave please go somewhere else right please move on so that's the idea it's often a command that you use to tell somebody to go away or to leave this place right please move on okay next one says move out and again this one's pretty simple it says to leave a home or apartment forever okay you'll notice this is the opposite of move in if I'm moving out of my apartment this weekend that means I'm leaving my apartment forever I'm taking my furniture I'm taking everything and I'm moving out so again move out and move in opposites and again think about move away as I mentioned is to move away often to a new city or town whereas to move out means just to leave your apartment or to leave your home forever but you might be moving in to a new apartment or new house in that same city right so that's how we would use that one okay a couple more next one says move over and it says to move to the side or to a new position so again I can use this one as a command right if I say move over please that means move to the side please or move to a new position okay but I can also move something over if I want to move my desk over that means I'm going to pick up the desk and I'm gonna move it right I'm gonna move it over to a different side of the room so it might be a physical object that you move something over or move over something okay alright and last one there says move up and I put there to advance to a higher level okay any time we move up to a higher level it means that we advance okay if I'm studying English and I'm in the beginner level and after a month or two I go to the next level then I moved up to a higher level okay same thing if I'm playing a video game and if I finish level one then I move up to level two right or again I could be playing a sport I could be playing a musical instrument if I move up to the next level again I've advanced to a higher level so that's how we use that one okay I want to see if we can erase the whiteboard here and I want to take a look at some written examples using each of these phrasal verbs all right then so let's take a look at a few more examples so I wrote here I was so sad that my cousin's family moved away last month right so again like I mentioned it probably means that they moved to a new place like a new sea or Newtown okay next one we move into our new place this Tuesday right so we begin living in our new house or our new apartment this Tuesday okay next one I hate that guy he keeps trying to move in on my girlfriend he knows she's mine right so this is a typical way to use it right another guy or another girl is trying to move in on your girlfriend or on your boyfriend right so they're trying to steal them away from you okay next one can we move on to something new I'm tired of talking about this right so let's stop talking about this and let's start talking about something different so let's move on to something new okay okay everybody please move on we have a lot of work to do here right so everybody please leave right please keep walking please go somewhere else right we have a lot of work to do here so please move on okay next one when are you moving out next weekend right so when are you leaving your apartment forever right like moving out of your apartment right so we're moving out next weekend okay next one can you move over please I can't see the TV so can you get out of the way right can you move to the side or move your head or something I can't see the TV so please move over okay couple more finally our team is moving up to the next level it took us almost two years so maybe our team we were stuck in a lower level right playing against sort of more beginner teams and finally we're moving up so we're gonna be playing against better teams right at a higher level okay and I also wrote one more definition using move on because I think this is a really common way to use move on as well that I didn't mention stop thinking about your ex-boyfriend move on right so just like we said here with move on in this one we're gonna stop talking about something and start talking about something new same thing with here you need to stop thinking about your ex-boyfriend and start thinking about you know new things like maybe meeting a new person so you need to move on right so in that case it means you need to stop thinking about that thing from the past because it's not good for you so move on okay that is the end of today's lesson I hope you found these phrasal verbs useful thank you so much for joining me here at maple leaf ESL and I look forward to seeing you again next time
