hi there rain sensor here get out your textbooks we're making a head from a cube i'm sure you've seen a lot of people if you get perfect circles and start pulling here and there and pushing here and there and then they got a pretty face that is sculpting um if you want an avatar for a sculpt you're going to have to spend a lot of time re-apologizing afterwards which is basically going over your sculpt bit by bit and placing vertices all over it which which i don't like doing personally um you're gonna save yourself hours of hassle if you start with the final mesh itself we're not going to do any sculpting um in that sense in that in that wider sense however the sculpting tools will come in handy they they're still useful um something else that's going to be very useful to you is what these squares in the background represent now um this cube that we have here is a meter by a meter and i guess note if you don't exactly know what i'm doing you can see uh little little words come up here that shows what i'm what button i'm clicking um so you press the middle mouse and drag to rotate um also in blender i believe you press left click to select but i don't i don't have it on left click i have the the right click because i prefer the right click one all right uh so if you zoom in here you'll be able to tell that box is a meter that box is a meter that box is a meter that box is a meter if we zoom in a little bit more what are these box divided by three four five three four five there divided by ten so each of these are ten centimeters keep that in mind when you're making people okay you don't want to make someone who's four meters tall and then try and import it somewhere and you can't see your head all the other half of your body okay so make sure you scale everything to the correct size to delete everything in this scene we just press a that will select everything and hit delete if you ever want to deselect anything double tap a select a once deselect double tap okay so that's gone um so let's start with the cube add a cube we're gonna edit these values here put it in the center having things mirrored is so important just make sure your x value is zero the other values don't matter too much and since this is going to be had let's try and get it to a head size and let's make this person a little uh over a meter and a half yeah so 160 this little dot here is very important but as long as it's in the center it should be fine so ctrl a apply all transformations see that dot has jumped to the bottom very useful all right go into model which is that tab there layout modeling we want to add a modifier and we're going to add a subdivision modifier see where it says levels viewport here set that to 2. this shape is going to be very useful for the head and the body but we're not doing the body today we're just focusing on the head all right go back to the go back to the layout tab um this little spanner wrench here go down that menu and apply or you can hit ctrl a nice this this is a great shape let's go back to modeling what i'm doing right now this this i'm hitting num had one to go to that view and numpad three why is it not why the uh screencast not showing here i don't know that's a little weird let me stay in uh this view then okay it shows on that view so when i click one it shows the front num had one when i click numpad three it shows the side this object's left so say if it's facing the front could be the objects left we want to turn on this proportional editing and we're selecting this let's see right here see this is the bottom this is the front this is right in between them i'm gonna press g to grab and we're gonna scale our little editing circle like that you want to bring it down so it makes a chin [Music] it doesn't have to be perfect this is just the basic shapes that is the head we're going to be working with videos over thanks everyone no i'm just kidding look um what we want is a nose now what i want to use for the nose is this area here in this area here i want to use for the mouth i'm very i'm very particular about the shapes of these things because you see if i ever want to add a loop cut to something with the way i do things here it's going to be extremely easy you want to keep it very simple you want to work with as little vertices as possible let's turn that off also another thing i recommend you doing click and hold on this menu here change it to lasso left click and hold okay change it to lasso this select is a lot easier all right we want to take this variety here control no alt v okay but you want to make sure let's undo that you want to make sure when you click alt v before you click it your your crew your cursor this cross hair here is above you want it above alt v okay and drag it up and out there's your nose not too bad now is it so now we've got a mouth and a nose let's turn on mirror here eventually i am going to split this object in half across the x-axis mirror on the x-axis i'm going to split this object in half and just use a mirror modifier but for now this is fine so we're going to select this line and [Music] drag it to the left okay and the left is along this red axis which is the x axis it's the same color so let's see that let's press g actually let's turn off proportional editing first press g and then press x okay and then it locks drag it in that direction towards the center so the nose is thinner let's get another loop cut we can click this button or we can press ctrl r and then click here and click here too editing on control actually alt and then whatever your select button is press that and i'm going to scale this a little bit just to round it out you can also do that another way now let's try and get this head a nice size scaling this in the x direction i'm going to grab this scale in the z direction and just get this looking into nicer shape grab and then set this is looking a lot better all right we want to turn this area here and two eyes now how i want to do that is to grab that drag it up a little bit do another loop cut ctrl r drag that about there we'll do i'm gonna do a superhero mask shape this is how it looks from the side doesn't look too bad doesn't grab this in the y direction starting to look a bit more like a face now this area want to turn into an eye go in the third direction pull it down we're going to make a sort of superhero mask shape you're gonna start to see it like that that's where we're gonna put the eyes see how everything is still married that's great i'm gonna put the mouth in this area here i'm not gonna cut anything out of it yet just don't want to do that just yet another thing i'm going to do is pass one of these loops over the nose so it flows like that because i just like how that works with the meshes this is still going to be mirrored on the x-axis okay back to the front isn't that a lovely shape now what you can also do is you can grab this pull it back a little bit so g y add another loop up here scale a little bit you can pull out an ear from the side if you really want to but you don't have to unless you're doing like a model for 3d print or something it's okay to not have all of the meshes uh like directly attached you don't have to do that it's still gonna work as long as it's rigged nicely so how do we do this now we select this face select i'm gonna select this cube this square and this square to select okay my my um my right mouse click is a little broken so that's why i'm having so much trouble selecting that but you just shift select and it's gonna mirror okay so we press e to extrude oh actually yes extrusions don't mirror extrusions don't mirror anyway now that i've said that this would be a great time to add the mirror modifier let's just do that right now so it's already on the lasso select select all these half faces delete them nope delete the faces and then we add a modifier here and mirror clipping on and to double check the clipping is in fact on you can select this edge and then try and grab it in the x direction and it shouldn't move clipping basically attaches things that you want to be attached if you don't want them to be attached don't put clipping on anyway making the ear again you just want to make this into an ear shape and honestly i would i would have it a bit lower so i'd put a loop cut there and then probably loop cut there and drag it out but i don't i don't tend to do is like this all the time it's more than okay to make the ear separate and then attach to the head later which i like doing because then it's a lot easier to uh paint it as well anyway that's the um main headshot we're going to be working with i will be deleting this error i think i think it'll be good to delete this year plus i get to show you another trick let's delete the vertices here and oh no there's a hole in our mesh what are we gonna do here we go select select select select and then we press f for face f for face select select select select f for another face it's like nothing ever happened let's let's actually make an ear it's going to be a very um low poly ear yes i'm going to select those faces again shift d for duplicate all right don't be selected okay turn that off grab in the x direction pull that out extrude in the x direction okay extrude come on why is that not working let's do that again shifty grab in the x direction extrude look at it that's going to be our ear we're going to delete these faces here because we don't need them x delete faces and turn that into more of an ear shape so scale it in the y direction s to scale i like to add loop kit here in the center rounds things out a little bit let's kill that in the x direction grab eggs grab that grab that put a loop hitch around this top part out grab sand and this is what i like doing for the ears okay so that's the shape i like using for the front of the ear this is how i like to do it let's turn off this x-ray and we're going to select these faces and press i to invert no inset in set yes press i to insert and then just get it to an ear like shape this so i'm gonna merge to that side um so you don't need to don't need to do that this is a good shape grab in the y direction to push that back a bit that's like a low poly ear but it works turn this off again so we can select through the opposite end grab in the x direction this sad direction and let's see the back it's not too dissimilar this is all getting subdivided again by the way but it's always nice to do all the big shapes um first so we're gonna insert that there and delete these faces so this face this face next delete faces we're gonna select this edge and scale it in the x direction and there we go all flattens out nicely gonna select these and yeah again my my right mouse click is a little broken grab in the y direction pull that out there's your ear they will be refined eventually don't worry all right so since we've done these basic shapes we're gonna leave the head for now we're gonna leave that for now and then we'll deal with subdividing in a later tutorial so what have we learned today class we've learned that we don't have to sculpt we can start with a cube we've also learned that we don't have to attach all the mesh together because a you're not always gonna have the perfect apology for it to work perfectly every time and b it's not gonna affect how your model works anyway so don't don't force yourself to attach everything what else um we want to have these shapes for the the face we have an area for the mouth that looks like this an area for the eyes that looks a bit like a superhero mask a small area for the nose and the rest is pretty much just a subdivided cube quite simple right all right i'll see you in tomorrow the video we are gonna be working on the body i'm gonna do the body not the hands on the feet just the body all right all right all right okay see you guys bye thanks for coming to school and uh you better put your uh get get your ass on in inga and post a picture and be like rain sensei this is my work and i'll be like yes a star oh i'll be like fail what is this nonsense how dare you present me with this this horrible work do not show your face at this class ever again okay okay farewell hey if you noobs aren't smart enough to figure this out file save save as okay save save yourself okay okay good [Music] you
