Overanalyzing Avatar: The Headband

foreign we actually get to see the same route that you see The Invasion forces take to get up to the fire nation capital also a few shots later we get to see Zuko hop out of bed and go on this [ __ ] enormous hike up the volcano and down again to visit Ira which means the prison isn't in the capital city nothing really to comment on there but I'm over analyzing what do you want from me who's there this combined with another moment later on makes this feel really really weird I'll comment on Zuko's weird outing here later here we see the reintroduction of cloud bending which actually hasn't been used at all since the fortune teller back in season one but it actually shows up a few more times early in this season too damn kataro you're just letting AG do all the cloud bending isn't he still [ __ ] up from being dead for like 90 seconds a little while ago share the load everyone's clothes are still messed up in this episode by the way katara's robes or whatever are still torn at the bottom and what have you hey we're in enemy territory those are enemy Birds [ __ ] you hiding in cave after cave after cave after cave am I crazy or does this shot make it look like saka's ponytail is on the complete top of his head rather than like the kind of back top of his head this is a Warriors wolf tail I don't know about this these clothes belong to somebody I call the silk robe So guitar grabs these two pieces of clothing but I mean I'm no [ __ ] clothes doctor but how does she turn these into this similarly Toff and Ang just grab like beach towels here by the looks of it at least it looks like what Saka picked out actually ended up being part of his outfit sorry use finally a stylish shoe for the blind earthbender toss is going to let the one soulless shoe Rock not gonna even it out or anything nah she probably does later your Mom's necklace oh oh yeah speaking of jewelry where did the gang get all these like wristbands and metal Hoops for their arms and stuff off the laundry line this is before they go accessory shopping so it must have been so Katara pays here with Fire Nation money which I guess they would have ransacked the [ __ ] they captured for so I guess that checks out I used to visit my friend kuzan here a hundred years ago this is the second mentioning of Aang's friend kuzan the first time was back in the blue Spirit when Zuko was waking up I used to always visit my friend kuzan the two of us we get in and out of so much trouble together oh we're going to a meat place that's meat between shots here you see this old guy about the crossings path but then in the next reverse shot he's replaced with the big man over here couldn't be more obvious that you don't belong here we start the scene in the classroom on a close-up shot of the school's logo which is a triangle a lot of stuff in the Fire Nation are triangles actually like this gold coin from earlier I think it's because it's the closest approximation you can get to a burning fire with a shape so you'll see a lot of triangle imagery if you look for it the school's logo is also on Aang's headband which she has upside down which doubles as kind of replacing the arrow on his forehead and also represents that Aang isn't really supposed to be here or is the odd one out because it's reversed oh is this a new mind ready for molding mine for molding what are you molding it to your [ __ ] is blank sorry man even they're like bowing respectful hand gesture looks like fire look look at it it's in Fuego or uh okay sick coverang but where are you gonna sit gonna be a great year for twins yes you don't have to babysit the new kid wow you must be one of those popular kids I've been hearing about I know you're from the colonies so I'll say this slowly wow this guy's really cool actually I agree he should be popular guitar is way over here far from off in this shot but then in the next shot it seems like she's nearly leaning on him you again stop where you are okay so Zuko went for a walk last night God called out left came back again tonight got called out and then just big dick to this guard what does the first trip accomplish from like a writing standpoint is it supposed to tell us like this is really bothering Zuko and he can't stop thinking about it because he actually just says that like 30 seconds from now so what's the point I don't know this just makes this scene from earlier seem really awkward I already have a picture of fire lord ozai man they really didn't show ozai for two whole seasons and now they're really forcing it down my throat aren't they and here's one that I made out of noodles noodles all right you can force that one down my throat I what about the secret right to the fire lord okay so this is either a lie that gets bite off Toff doesn't care enough to call him out or there actually is a secret River the imagery in the Zuko iro scenes is really interesting like from the way the camera frames each of the characters but I'll talk more about it when there's a better example in a few episodes good morning class recite the Fire Nation oath oh I guess Angus takes this kid's seat yeah [ __ ] you this kid doesn't only mess up the oath but he actually sits down in a different position to everyone else as well probably to reinforce his accidental non-conformity what year did Fire Lord sosin battle the air Nation Army is that a trick question the animal mads didn't have a formal military Susan defeated them by Ambush what you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard that on my ears this freakish looking dude literally conducts Nails on a chalkboard yo won this uh I'm not going to say the right word on this stringed instrument there seems to be a little dragon head carving at the top all right I wasn't gonna mention it but this is the second scene with them now what's up with these kids in the background having vaguely blue purplish hair I really like that crazy dance you were doing thanks anji I can show it to you again if you'd like oh my God you can't do that on school grounds right could you imagine how brutal bullying would be when [ __ ] kids could just throw Fireballs or enormous rocks at you dude AG being so above this guy it's like a game to him is so awesome it's like this guy's trained with masters of every element this kid's a joke and it's awesome that Anne kind of stunts on him he even does some of his bagua the martial art air bending is based on right here and we haven't seen that kind of thing since way back in episode two basically if you watch closely here you can actually see Aang just Ducks through his legs entirely soccer players go nuts when you put a ball through someone's legs imagine their reaction if you nutmeg someone with your entire body fire Wang fire this is my wife Sapphire Sapphire fire nice to meet you damn this is the second time Qatar hasn't missed a goddamn beat with the fake names thing she's sharp hi June Pippin paddle opsicopolis nice to meet you Mr and Mrs fire that's interesting too we don't know if anyone in the Fire Nation with a surname but this implies they must exist right what's Zuko surname the only last name we ever actually get in the show was toffs which is of course McGillicuddy I also like the low-key play that Qatar is supposed to be pregnant so even if the Headmaster was like ah you look a little young to be his parents he'd also have to be like well [ __ ] I mean she's already got another one coming I can't really call them out you're so beautiful when you hate the world I don't hate you I don't hate you too oh I get that this is supposed to be like edgy and lame at the same time but Jesus there's such a thing as doing too good of a job Zuko could I word with you I mean no we climbed out here to the edge of the enormous volcano that surrounds our city to make out it's weird that you followed us Azula go away oh May Tyler needs your help untangling her braid I'm gonna betray this [ __ ] at the moment of truth I swear to God if people will find out you've been to see Uncle they'll think you're plotting with him be careful dum-dum will they this scene kind of actually goes nowhere like that's never a plot line at all is this scene just here to give us this may side eye moment I'm not ready to leave I'm having fun for once just being a normal kid that's the thing Aang excels at being a normal likable kid that's all he ever wanted he didn't want all this Avatar stuff thrusted upon him in this episode we get to see the relaxed everyday kidding which is awesome this is his wheelhouse and it's great to see that we get to see what Aang would be like if he didn't have to worry about being the Avatar if only for a few scenes I'm gonna throw them a secret dance party [Music] I can't believe we're having a dance party it seems so silly yes thank you Saka that is exactly what we discussed just before the commercial break thank you for the reminder they're coming everyone stop bending I ain't set this up really fast like in a day or less maybe he got the school band too I guess for some reason I always thought Aang hired like an outside band or something but no the flameos are in school uniforms too and a couple of them look like the students from the background of the school scenes so I guess these guys just secretly rock face at music if they get to express themselves I don't think my parents want me dancing in a cave wait what are you doing here you're supposed I first heard the camellifen strut my reaction was whoa chameleon elephant that's the sickest combo ever but then I looked it up and it turns out it's a cross between a camel and an elephant damn it wait hold on AG just ran up the wall like taking full strides I assumed to the ceiling Jesus there had to be some air bending involved in that right and if so Aang what the [ __ ] chill dude we're undercover I need your advice I think the Avatar is still alive I know he's out there I'm losing my mind man this has got to be one of the hardest moments for iro right to hear Zuko was still struggling but he's still thinking about the Avatar even though that path has brought him more suffering than ever I think it's really smart if I were to give Zuko the silent treatment throughout this episode Zuko should have to deal with the consequences of the decision he made and I think Ira thinks the same a lot of people say Ira was silent in this episode because of the death of Mako Ira's voice actor but I don't really buy that I think this is how it was supposed to go all along everybody freestyle this kid absolutely murders this man I get so hyped whenever I watch this how has this not become a meme of some kind foreign these shoes aren't really right for dancing and I I'm not sure that I know how to take my hand look at Ang man he's in his [ __ ] element baby he's vibing he's not even nervous around Katara I [ __ ] with this energy gang what did Aang whisper to Katara here you'd think they'd do some kind of bending without bending routine but I don't think it's water bending there's a lot of aerial stuff in handstands so I don't know where they came up with all this he's the one we want the boy with the headband uh-oh gotcha I'm Spartacus I'm Spartacus [Music] [Applause] you may wonder where all these kids got the headbands from but the headband is actually the sash that they wear around their waist that seems to be part of their school uniform so that's why everyone has one way to go dancing pants I think you really did help those kids you taught them to be free I like that toss kind of stoked on Ang here knowing that Toff is super against being forced down by any rules I think that's a really nice line to have in here I've heard about you you say you're good at what I would do better at keeping secrets do you do you think he's good at keeping secrets because he doesn't talk I like this end stinger and this is going to be a point I bring up in the next video which a lot of people aren't gonna like I think this episode's fun every now and then you need a little fun and Avatar if you don't have it it's not the same show there's always some levity in episodes and cute little jokes but sometimes you need a light episode and last episode was heavy as hell the entire bossing say Arc was pretty heavy too I think we needed this this helps Avatar keep feeling like Avatar is this the best episode no not at all some people really dislike it but I think it fills a role it's funny lighthearted sweet and well-meaning which are all big parts of this show I'm probably not going to change anyone's mind on this episode if they already don't like it but personally I don't have a problem with it Patron Shadows if you
