Hey guys, we're Evan and Katelyn. (alert sound) (laughing) It's like-- (electronic beep) And if you've watched some of our resin videos, you might recognize some of these supplies. Like these alcohol type inks or these pearlescent mica powders. But we also have some weird things like charcoal and food. And a giant pot. Yeah, and a giant pot. Are we cooking, are we doing resin, what's happening? Are we finally starting the Evan and Katelyn cooking channel? No. No. We are making soaps today. (upbeat flute music) And it's because of you guys, thank you. Or, well if this goes well, thank you. We've seen some of the comments you've left on our videos. We see every comment you leave on our videos. It's not something we've ever dived into before. Well honestly 'cause we never really use soap that much. We use like, like a gel. We just don't bathe. We just don't bathe. But when we started looking up videos of soap, we were like whoa. Yeah. What we realized is soap making is very resin-adjacent. Like cool chemical processes happening. There's gooey liquids. Interesting things to mix into the gooey liquid. There's like the reveal of the next day popping it out of the mold and seeing what you have because you really don't know how it's gonna turn out in the end and that's super exciting. We also thought that soap was a little bit more accessible than resin because it's a little bit cheaper and you can make a large batch of it and you can make a whole bunch of gifts for someone because... soap-- Because you like them? Because you like them. So which brings us to the tests that we're gonna do today. (relaxed guitar music) So we got some of the things people commonly mix into their soaps because we want to experiment and learn how all this stuff works. Try mixing different proportions of things in before we do any like more advanced soap techniques. So for the liquid dyes and for the mica powder, these are actually like special ones. They're food safe or they're contact safe. We also have a bunch of dried flowers that we're gonna try out. We have essential oils. We have charcoal because this is good for your face skin and then we also have some food items that we stole from the pantry. Honey, coffee, sugar. We also have a secret ingredient that Katelyn hasn't told me about that I'm worried about. I just picture like pure hot flakes or like hot pepper flakes. Hot flakes. That's not my ingredient. But we also have two different types of soap. So we have the clear soap and then this like opaque white soap. Because we're doing melt and pour soap. There's different kinds you can do that are a little bit more advanced where you have lye and oil and you put it together and-- It looks legit scary. There's like five minutes of warnings before all of these videos and it's-- And it can explode. Like corrosive. And it can explode. This is chicken. This is chicken on lye. (explosion booms) So we're not gonna do that. Not yet. We're gonna go with the easiest one possible. Which is melt and pour, so that means we just cut it up, put it in the double boiler and then see how it goes. Oh, and then when we're done, we're gonna pour them in these tiny little cute molds that we found and then we'll take out all of our tests at the end and show you guys how they turn out. If you drop that, it's gonna get like floor dust all over it. I tried to eat it. I tried to toss it in the air and eat it. KATELYN: Don't do it again. (laughs) (classical ensemble music) It's like you're cute and scary at the same time. Okay, what should we start chopping? Do you wanna do the clear? So we're gonna test the colors first in the clear and in the white. EVAN: Ooh, after we make these-- KATELYN: I get why soap cutting's a thing, this is, oh, it's like harder than Jell-O. Most things are. But softer than an avocado seed. (laughing) It's nice. EVAN: Afterwards once we make all of our little soaps, are we gonna do like a-- Like a cross section? EVAN: Or like one of those soap ASMR things. Oh, I mean-- Don't cut yourself. Don't cut yourself. It kinda like sticks. Yeah, we'll probably do something, a little something something. Because this is nice. EVAN: You're making me so nervous. That totally makes me want to do that. KATELYN: So I figure we should, we're not gonna do every single color. We should like pick a couple to do with the liquid. Oh man, it's already melting, look at that. So we're using the double boiler. You can also just do this in your microwave. Just put 'em a microwave-safe bowl, micro-safe. (electronic beeping) An emergency. But we figured this would be satisfying. Now just let it go. Because like I don't think-- I want to stir it so bad. (laughing) Oh, it's really clear when it melts actually 'cause it's kinda foggy as, in cube form. Commence the jiggling. I was also worried that this wouldn't melt with this technique because every YouTube video is all, all I've seen is the microwave technique. Katelyn, there was a soap that I saw online that was iced tea soap, so they made like a brown soap and then they embedded just like a solid soap like this in it and when they cut it it looked like a cross section of iced tea. Did they put dried lemon slices in it? They didn't. Oh, missed opportunity. Missed opportunity. (wheezy groan) It's exciting. (laughing) What was that noise? Just normal human noises. (upbeat piano music) I'm just gonna like grab a little bit of each just to fill like a single mold. We're using these little silicon cups. Would you like a cup of water? Yes. A tiny shot. Actually, please do not drink soap. When I was younger, sometimes I'd take a bath and eat a Popsicle at the same time and I'd dip the Popsicle in the bathtub. EVAN: Two drops, yeah. KATELYN: That's a lot, I feel like we could, I think that is good actually. Oh my gosh, it does look like Jell-O. Oh, you gotta pop that bubble, that's like a sign of bad soap. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, wait a minute. With the alcohol. Yeah. It's different than, with resin it's a blowtorch. Here, it's alcohol. Ready? Yeah. Yeah. I wasn't filming, I just... We'll get the next one, I'm sure it'll happen again. So now-- Now we're gonna do yellow. KATELYN: We're just testing like a few colors. So we figured we'd do the primary colors. It just looks clear. Look at how great-- You're really good at your measurements. Yes. Now, a little bit of blue. I'm trying to make this a pretty, oh, this is purple. You did a lot in this one. Yeah, I wanna see how like opaque you can make clear. Pretty good. Pretty opaque. EVAN: Yeah. KATELYN: That's like black. This breaks the surface tension and magically clears it up. That's so cool. Okay. Okay, that was a success. So I'm gonna do the pigment ones now. For the colors, I think it's just more about figuring out how much to do, so like we know how much is too much now. Oh wait, I should film this. How much did you fill up? Like two healthy scoops. KATELYN: I'll just pick three more random colors that I feel like testing. It's just like Pearl Ex. I was like, oh no, it's hot, it's kicking and then I realized it's hot because we've been heating it up for several minutes. When it starts to cool, that's when you panic. That's when it's kicking. So technically we've heard when people use the powders, they dissolve it in like an alcohol or some kind of liquid first but since we're doing such small amounts, I think we'll be okay, although I can still see individual bits of the pigment that won't mix. I seriously feel like I'm doing resin right now. EVAN: It's actually less stressful though. Yeah because if this starts kicking, you can just re-melt it. You can just re-melt it. Not gonna smoke and melt your cups. Yeah. (nervous giggling) Okay, it's starting to blob. Okay. What is even happening in there? Is this gonna melt? EVAN: This camera's so pretty. Oh, that looks pretty too and it looks like just resin. I know we're gonna be saying this a lot. We just need to put like a just like resin counter on the screen right now or something like that. Resign-adjacent, like-- Just like Pearl Ex. I seriously feel like I'm doing resin right now. Yeah, though it is like more chill. I can see why this is very popular. I say two test soaps in. That's pretty. Is it bad, I want to like, we have these extra ones, can I just do something real quick? Sure, yeah. I'm gonna go rogue. I just want to see what happens if I just, because otherwise this is just gonna go to waste and it's just like resin. I'm gonna do your yellow. Nevermind, it's solidified. Well, we'll just keep pouring. That will be like-- The miscellaneous. Miscellaneous super one. EVAN: It looks so pretty right now actually. Cool, cool, cool, okay, I got one more color. I do like the white. Oh, yeah. KATELYN: I just wanna see like a pearly white. EVAN: So far, the pearly pigments look way better than just like the regular color pigments. It really depends on what you're going for. If you wanted something that kind of looked like a candy or something. Yeah. Then I think clear ones would be cool. Like you can make like Jolly Rancher soap. Ooh. I saw that. That's hot, it's hot. That's hot. That's pretty too. Okay, I think that's a good basic test for our pigments and our dyes. It seems like the proportion of pigment to soap is similar to what we do with resin. The dyes, I don't know because I don't know how much you put in there, what would you say? Yeah, it totally works the exact same as resin. Should we do them in white, see how it differs? Yes. Ooh, can I chop this time? Oh, yeah. We'll switch bowls, we'll do some white. Evan gets to chop. Yes. Okay, ready? Okay. Oh yes, I understand. Right? Then you do a twist motion to be safe. Oh yeah, okay ready? Oh yeah, oh, I'm ready. EVAN: I wonder if you could heat up the knife and then it'd be like even more-- 10,000 degree knife. Oh my gosh, you know what we forgot, Katelyn? I know exactly what we forgot. Scent. Oils. Oh, I thought you were about to segue into our Words Are Hard shirt. Oh. We forgot to announce our Words Are Hard shirt. You can get them now at Evan and Katelyn, ShopEvanAndKatelyn.com, words are hard! We also have this wonderful It's Dangerous to Go Alone, Take This. Do you not remember what words I put on it? I know it's from the meme, I just kinda forgot if you changed it or something. KATELYN: It's dangerous to go alone, take this. And it's our Supurrvisor. Yeah. So we have our very first shirt for the Evan and Katelyn Gaming channel and the much-requested Words are Hard shirt. ShopEvanAndKatelyn.com, we'll have a link. Okay, oils, we did totally forget the scented oils. But we're gonna remember this time. KATELYN: Which scent do you want to do? We have tea tree. Let's do tea tea. Lavender. We gotta do tea tree. Tea tree is amazing. Let me finish. Because yesterday you said "We have to do lemongrass, lemongrass is the best." We have to do lemongrass, lemongrass is the best. I changed my mind. Tea tree, lavender, lemongrass, peppermint or a mixture that is jasmine, neroli and patchouli. Let's do lemongrass. We're doing a quarter pound, no, we're doing a half, a half pound per melt. What we should do is about a 3/4 tablespoon. EVAN: So just to be safe, I'm gonna do 1/2. KATELYN: Maybe a little splishy splash more. A little splishy splash more. Oh my god, it smells-- It smells so good. I can totally see why people get into making soaps. I would just make a super, super strong one just to like set it next to my bed like a candle that I don't have to light. Sniff your soap before going to bed each night. Just like rub it on my upper lift. What? Who are you, who are you? It looks like milk, also maybe 'cause it was milk. KATELYN: Oh yeah, it's like goat's milk. Put that in my tea. For some reason, when you were saying tea, I just started auto-completing and it was T-E, like teeth. Put that in my teeth. Put that in my teeth. Oh, it's so nice, it's so nice, it's so nice. EVAN: Should I pour the rest right here? KATELYN: Yeah. EVAN: We'll have a couple multi-layered miscellaneous-- Yeah. Soaps also. We might as well. We are gonna have so many soaps by the time we're done. But they're gonna be so tiny. They're gonna be like individual use, it's gonna be perfect. We'll put them in our guest room and just be like "Just take one." "Take it with you afterwards." Yeah, "Take it with you afterwards." Because the only thing about soaps, I feel like the reason I don't typically like bar soaps is 'cause it's like as soon as you use it, it's just wet and it like melts its soapiness on places. So like if we put 'em out, people could just take one. I don't want them to put it back. It will contaminate the others. Again, it just like totally blends in. That blends in the cone. I can't even focus on it. It has no idea what's happening. Okay, on this last one, I am not gonna go extra. I will put the proper amount of purple drops in there. Thank you. (relaxed classical flute, violin music) I like it. Actually it's funny, I thought-- Let's leave it swirly. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that the white one dries a little bit faster, cools a little bit faster. Good to know, good to know, good to know. I'm curious to see-- EVAN: If like the gold shimmer will still appear? KATELYN: Yeah. Because right now it's just looking kinda like beige. Beige. Beige. Not super shimmery. You can kind of see it on the surface. It also, oh, this does cool faster. Go for it, go for it. (upbeat electronic music) It's the next day and your pizza one is leaking. It's a feature, it's like a Gusher. (laughing) Well I noticed that like some of the ones that were fully clear-- Have sparkles. Have sparkles. Are all those like, are those crystals or is it glitter? I'd be down to start popping these out. I'm kind of curious to see what they look like. I forgot which ones are layered miscellaneous ones and which ones are like the pure ones. EVAN: This is gonna be a surprise. Oh, oh yes. Yes, I see it, I see it. Our first soap. KATELYN: It was the first one we poured too, our little Jell-O. EVAN: Oh, yes. That is super cute. EVAN: Oh, nice. KATELYN: Much satisfying. EVAN: These are the liquid colorants in clear. In clear. Gold in clear. Do the cremes. Oh, that was a double. It was a multi, yeah. KATELYN: I like that. EVAN: Are we gonna de-mold each of these individually one by one and then comment on every single one? KATELYN: Eh, let's see. EVAN: Let's probably time lapse through this part. KATELYN: Even though the clear was easier to work with, the milky one feels like it would be more luxurious. EVAN: Yeah, it looks higher quality. KATELYN: Our first flower where we just kinda put 'em on top. That looks pretty nice actually. Yeah. Like that's kinda cute. EVAN: A little bit of bubbles but, you know. Okay, so don't add-- White to white. White pigment to the white. KATELYN: Oh yeah, these definitely floated to the top. But it looks kind of, actually I really like that. Yeah, that looks great. Super cool. EVAN: Now that I know the technique, I can maybe help with this little bit too. Are you saying you want to do it? Yes. The dual layers, oh, that is primo right there. Oh, that's cool. I love how the clear magnifies it. Pop 'em out. Oh my gosh, look at that. (high pitched gasp) Oh, that's my favorite. That is amazing. That's my favorite so far. That is-- KATELYN: That is so cute. That makes me want to do some resin stuff like that too. EVAN: Oh yeah. KATELYN: With the clear and some florals. EVAN: I'm gonna move these down here so that I can cluster all of my favorite ones. Rank our children by favorites. Rank our favorite child. Oh, those are cool too. That's really cool too. Whoa, a multi. Ooh. I like the multis too, I know that those were kind of accidents. But looking at 'em together, that's like-- Oh yeah. Classy, right? Oh, that's so fancy. That's really fancy. Oh yeah, a triple. Oh, that's my coffee, right? Yeah. Is that my coffee flavor? What's that middle layer, is that extra sugar? EVAN: Oh wow. This is an ocean one. Cool. Look at that. That's amazing. That looks like a glacier. I want to use this now. Oh, the multis, go with multis, people. KATELYN: Go with multis, people, people. EVAN: I'm really excited about this one. Oh yeah. Oh. Oh my gosh, you know what'd be so cool? To do this but then the layer here is like white ice. Oh yeah. So then it really did look-- Multi-layered, like super multi-layered. So then it really did look like it was an iceberg sticking out of the water. Oh, it's a white. White salt. KATELYN: White salt, that gradient is nice. Oh. The sugar. Brown sugar. Yep. KATELYN: Coffee or my tea? I think it's coffee. That's coffee. Oh, you can smell the coffee? Coffee and lavender. I wonder if there's coffee essential oils? Now I'll do my tea. Are you gonna save the pizza for last? Of course. Okay, we have a few solids. We'll probably just go through these fast. That is a pretty color. That's a fade. It's just two simple ones, but, oh, it looks like jade. It does look like jade. This is the silver with like a thin blue on top. Oh, nice. This got a little oily from the pizza. Okay, are you ready for the piece de resistance? I am. ♪ Da na na na, na na na, na na na na ♪ (laughing) (zelda sound effect) Hold it up into the camera so that we can see. KATELYN: It's a little greasy but you know, olive oil is good for skin things. Delicious. You know. KATELYN: I actually do think this looks really cool. I think if I'd just left out the olive oil, it actually would be kind of a legit soap. It would actually be legit. Put this little greasy guy right here, not actually touching anyone. You wipin' off my greasy boy? He's just gonna keep leaking, okay? Don't worry, I separated him from the other children so he won't contaminate the beautiful ones. (laughing) Yay. Yay. All right, so they look pretty but how well do they work? (tepid guitar tones) KATELYN: So this is the salty, the one that was like half-salty, the iceberg soap. EVAN: It's getting a little bit of a lather but I'm not sure how useful this shape is in terms of soap. KATELYN: It was meant for ice cubes and not soap. EVAN: I mean it's working though, I mean I feel like I did get a good amount of soap on my hands. KATELYN: Do you feel any scrubbiness from the salt? No, but it smells delicious. So that was our clear, I'm gonna try one of the white ones with flowers on top. Ooh, fancy. I feel like it will feel terrible though. That is a weird shape. That's a weird shape. Like, do I roll it? Actually the flowers feel kind of like oddly exfoliating. Maybe it's 'cause it's just these little guys. But like it's kind of a nice scrubby scrub. I actually feel like this is a pretty good lather, this creamy one even though it's more of a pain to work with. The flower stayed in even though these were just poked on top. Yeah. Success. Do you want to cut 'em since we've already messed these ones up? Yes. It's time. Okay, wait, wait, wait, wait. Time. Okay, do it. Does it feel crunchy with the salt? EVAN: There was a little bit of crunch. Get a picture of that cross section. KATELYN: Wow, that's so cool. You can see the gradient all the way through. EVAN: Oh yeah, that's extra crunchy, oh, that's not good. KATELYN: Yeah. Now you're just, so we're giving up on using this one I'm assuming. EVAN: Is this how you do the soap cutting ASMR? KATELYN: I mean it is still pretty satisfying. It looks like-- Pop Rocks maybe? (relaxed classical violin, flute music) KATELYN: Ooh, it cut right through those flowers. Ooh, one like sunk. Yeah. It got embedded in there, look at that. This is really all I wanted to do this whole video. (laughing) Wow, that one is crunchy, okay, okay. So I know that I feel very proud of our first soap making attempt. But it doesn't really matter what I think. EVAN: It's what the Supurrvisor thinks. It's what the Supurrvisor thinks, so let me go get her. Hi. You wanna come see our latest creation? What do you think? She didn't even give 'em a chance. (somber guitar music) Here, maybe if I bring one to her. A nice flower one. What do you think? Is that so nice? You have so much stuff in your whiskers. Oh, she likes it. Oh. We got the head wuv of approval. She just didn't like being on the spot up there. What about this one? It's got milk in it. Are you avoiding it? It's got milk. Yay. (laughing) EVAN: She's mildly disinterested. KATELYN: So now we just need to figure out what to do with these. Frame them, oh, oh, I know, they're so pretty, let's encase them in resin. They're SOAP pretty. All right, well I hope you guys enjoyed this journey of soap along with us. I know I learned a ton, I had a lot of fun. These are incredibly satisfying to make. Yeah, I hope you've learned something about soap making from this and I hope that you maybe-- Don't use this as a resource for soap making. No, no, we'll link legit resources down below. KATELYN: Yeah, if you guys have any specific types of soap ideas you want to see, let us know. Oh yeah, oh yeah, and if you haven't Words Are Harded yet, sorry, what was I saying? If you're interested in any Words Are Hard or It's Dangerous to Go Alone, Take This merch, you can find it at ShopEvanAndKatelyn.com and we'll look forward to seeing you in the next video. Bye. Bye. EVAN: Okay, so it's the next day and I left the soaps out here in the garage and they have sweated. The glycerine is like creating these liquid drops. It's so weird. And it's crazy because, here, like touch this one. That one's like liquid. This is a salt one? EVAN: That's the salty one and it's like liquidy. Whoa. I know, right? It's like super liquid and then-- KATELYN: These ones are like individual drops. EVAN: Like, they're like solid. Oh, weird. I know. It like scrapes off. It's like a solid fuzz. EVAN: It's like fuzz, it's like fuzz. Wow, that's so weird. Yeah, so we looked into it. It's something with the melt and pour soaps. EVAN: And high humidity and heat. (laughing) Which a Houston garage is both of those. But here's the weird thing, these, the ones that we did with the white soap, some of them, most of them are okay, I mean. EVAN: It depends on the glycerin content of your soap. If you have a lower glycerin like this soap probably does, it won't do that as much but like the clear-- So much. Melt and pour. KATELYN: This was a clear. EVAN: Maybe we put so much alcohol ink in there that it didn't do that. Oh, this was the purple one? EVAN: That's the purple one. We put in so much ink, maybe it changed like the formula of it. The chemical. Oh weird, oh god, pizza has like a divot. He really dissolved, look, he's got like a hairy herb. What even is that? Clearly we still have a lot to learn about soaps. EVAN: So we should make another whole video.
