Osaka’s Longest Shopping Street 2.8km Marathon | Tenjinbashisuji

greetings everybody foremost suck that in front of us is an amazing shopping street we're about to explore in detail you're not gonna want to miss this one because joining me in this live stream is none other than the king of Osaka himself mr. mr. Osaka we don't want to give you royalty status although you deserve it Kevin Reilly of sucker Reilly's his Instagram name and his YouTube channel is yours kitchen Kuma's kitchen where he cooks up an amazing array of food like you've never seen before you have hundreds of videos now don't you yeah we put out one the one a week so it's really building up this shopping street is the longest in Japan and I'm really excited about this I've never this is gonna be kind of a marathoner thing to livestream the ten gene suji tenjinbashisuji Shelton guys yeah or the tenjinbashisuji shopping street which is centuries old going all the way back to the Adel period and it's changed every single era from Edo Meiji totai show show up hey say and now ray WA and we're gonna see if this shop this the street with 800 shops a tea shop going back to 1868 to start the Meiji Restoration is still here as well it starts off of course by McDonald's what's up with that talking straight to us really are the important is we obviously have been dying out yeah because you know as the big supermarkets have come in and shopping malls everything else and Little Shop streets have been done I the one in my neighborhood it's basically dead I mean it's not all these closed shutters here this street I don't think is that where you ever had that problem there's so many it's old soap operas people who sorta do here so much to see and do it here that everybody's coming in here and putting all the tourists are coming here too so yeah this is one shot the street that is gonna stick around this one and that shouldn't say bocce wanted cuz tonight like right I'm gonna let go I'm gonna let that roller go by way that's loud as you said tourists are here I hope she's not going to the end of the street it's gonna take her it takes them estimated forty minutes to get to the other side Kevin we should what's this here this is a yucky taco what is this takoyaki ah look at that so we didn't have to travel far to start the food a ton of street food in here are you hungry getting there or maybe we'll build up an appetite over this forty minutes a big shots is out to 71 for some street food money we will guy it's 2.8 kilometers long I guess it's like 1.8 miles I don't know I'm on the metric system now roughly around there about two miles or so and yeah I've never I've never been here so I'm already telling can like pick up the vibes of the Showa era right yeah look at that old ceiling all of their Showa era from the nineteen sixty fourths right you don't see that anymore big Japanese flag in the center here so it's a definitely a patriotic place look we do not have this kind of space look at this haircuts alone right everyone's wearing like vests looks very stylish in there they call it the barber in English in English yeah barber pole but it does look it does look high-class I like that yeah this is the older style ones I used to blow these back in the day where you come in there and they they do the whole thing they massage your neck they they powder her you after so they shave the back here's the back in decadent powder you yeah cut shaved shampoo set for about eighteen dollars or nineteen hundred yen that's a that's a bargain that's a complete service 100 yen shop is here it's interesting [Music] the dentist boom manhole right off the bat we have Osaka's famous castle manhole cover way better than Tokyo you got to love that look at the details in there all the crime all the rot from people walking over it does I see a painted one ones that the street aren't always at one point because they're buying up so much baby food right the powdered milk I remember we had the poison there was a poisonous powder milk problem in China so a lot of people came here to buy their their baby products let in the paint as well kind of dangerous for kids I dude I I'm starting to get a vibe here McDonald's really has taken over this area everywhere I guess it's because I don't know but possibly the real estate here is affordable no compared to compared to Tokyo but I guess by the entrance here this is prime real estate and then the further in you go maybe you know you want to be at that especially by that edges because you're right joe said train station was that train stations prime traffic it's funny to see Nova I thought they went out of business in 2008 but there they came back it's they cleaned up and came back apparently they used to stand for no vacation so this teachers would complain they never got days off but who don't know but she didn't but she and we have some taiwan dim sum that looks really good it's funny though I mean these is that a chain I can't tell I don't know if it to change where else so it looks like a local shop look at the black one shall employ yeah dessert yeah with the shrimp inside oh man and it says good crab in this one that looks really affordable too what's in there um nikkor meat yeah uniquor and they put it on the side there now he's getting hungry you can see on the side rata you can take it a street food right yeah just ask them they'll give it to your street food alright that's the best way to do it as you as you get further and further in rigor and I start to eat a little bit but how about giving us a like if we can get the 200 likes we're gonna buy something really good so it's up to you community at this place is good everybody I've taken I think would entertain it is like oh this is the kind of stuff we're like the best that I've had loved that place wait what station Toronto station on the G so you go around the loop line you go down towards 1000 G pterodaustro station you get out there's a Main Street go to that at the north side of the station where there's a McDonald's crossroads look down that Street to your right you see a big brown sign hope you all maybe read the kanji but it's a big brown big brown sign you go in a key place and delicious it's a very good tada - aw teddy - oh yeah te ra da CH o AC Jo and the nice thing is thing it's a really old restaurant so it's gonna yeah it's got a really nice character to it and everything family room for three generations yeah official name it's been running since the 8o period and it's going strong now a shoten guy is a covered shopping street like this you can see there's a roof on it so even if it's raining you can still walk down here and have fun these are before the shopping malls I guess they had this style but now it's kind of they have the EON malls which are taking over I passed a bunch of them on the Shinkansen and that's more of it like an american-type mall experience same stores but only here we're not allowed to take pictures only here will you get a tiger on the corner I didn't see the no this street is named look look I got new information this street is named after a shrine in the middle of it and that all the people went to the shrine and they built this street as tried to make money the people cut me to visit the shrine maybe you're still noticed this if you vote like vote in the countryside yeah you need a place up in Kyoto and just north of here in Osaka is that they're outside the shrine there will be a bunch of those stores attached to the shrine I go there do some stuff for the shrine and all that so I starts building out from the shrine in these shopping streets there's half way back and food and stuff so much rising going apply it all kind of like the old old-fashioned foods around there and then people start building up some stalls food stalls and stuff like that probably if you've been to fushimi inari oh yeah right this way yeah all I'm selling stuff yeah shrine like the Wilcoxes tell me though right and then also some food stalls that laughs so stretch going up there Osaka just takes it a step further oh yeah 2.8 kilometers further the city right the merchants are all from Osaka and the samurai were from from Tokyo so this is a fish shop in the middle of it this looks like an ISA kaya is this hey wow it goes up very colorful there's a chain this is a lantern called Cho Chien which you'll see in front of izakaya this color usually designates drinking so but on the first floor is a dice 100 yen shop you have to take the stairs on the left side yeah so what I was it looks like these are serving lot of sashimi and fish this izakaya it's about $30 for that plate here but you get a smaller size for a thousand yen less it's pretty good looks good hey I saw Simon's in the house how you doing Simon all right so we still get Rick how far have we made it I rely 10% in 2050 not even that you didn't tell me to keep track of most all right that's true we didn't keep track of the steps all I know is that if you look straight ahead I don't see the end I don't see the end awliyas boo shop here's a liquor shop they got some whiskey on the left side and sake on the right but I like this just they have everything here including the dogs [Music] so much so that the dogs are dogs eat edamame here and you have to toady look at that that's cute did you see what it is it's a bottle of just a quick off but bought four bottles it says oh it woody could have sat through sell booze it's is that what happens this is what happens sometimes people will give you like a present a whiskey bottle and you don't really need it so you bring here and sell it he sells it so you get a bottle of booze from somebody as a present you come here and then you sell it and get money only in Osaka seriously I don't know any other places only in Osaka so this is you know book off where people can sell used books and use products this is a bottle off this is crazy I that's a good good catch Kevin so the booze is cheaper here slightly yeah nama beer 100 yen all I know is that Osaka can compete with anybody in terms of low price and affordability yeah yeah boy that's that's super chat from David kimono to get booze we can really stretch it there Oh check this out off of it you got these really cool alleys that are also stocked with looks like restaurants and stuff we come up here sometimes uniqua places in places you some of this fantastic yeah we're in there one night there's so many people and so many air cushions going that the power went out on us so while sitting in the dark ET yakiniku cruz al would take a chance anyway alright somebody wrote in what's the cheapest haircut that the cheapest haircut that i found is a thousand yen yes it's about its QB mart and now anything less than that is is robbery on your want to get a pocket Wi-Fi router this is one month is 3000 yen or $30 but I think you need to have a contract with this it's called Softbank air I don't know what do you think pocket Wi-Fi Jimmy what do you use something called data Passport yeah obviously it's pretty convenient we don't have that in Japan you roam you pay a lot yeah so I pay about extra 20 bucks a month this is that's it yeah it's a steal more restaurants here and the bill way gave me a heart attack you look at the bill it's kind of quiet on this end look at all the open space not enough not enough foot traffic so we're gonna be on the bar on the prowl now to look for some more street food really appreciate you guys hanging in and contributing there's another there's another barber shop this one is a cut and blow for 25 or about 20 dollars for cutting blow at this shop but look house look how open this is such high ceilings very open I can't imagine when it's like on the weekend just full of people all right every single one is if I'm getting a haircut next time I'm coming here beauty shop yeah what happens we have a big big beauty shop University here a beauty salon you know beauty beautician that's it we're restaurant and that's I think when you know the history it and you eat it there it has more meaning or taste different when you know the background behind a dish or something you appreciate it more and I think when we went and ate there in the hiroshima vers osaka okonomiyaki battle and I still think we'll hit her she must better no no no we're not we're not even go there we're not gonna go there let's not go there but I will tell you this it was really really good and we didn't get a chance to highlight because we were limited on time this story behind his family story and I think that history and that experience is what makes it sets it apart from other restaurants in Osaka yeah they live breathe for okonomiyaki we always make sure oh this is one of the old knife shops goes all the way back until the Adel period I believe but you'll find very reputable names because there's what's the name of the station near here where they make knives there's one goes a little sucker Sakai the end of ten gene Bashi soo-ji I got to the end mmm even Kevin admitted that he in his 23 years living here in Osaka he has never come to the end of the street so we have done that I believe that this is it and then as soon as we get to this crosswalk we have completed 2.8 kilometers in in 85 minutes a ridiculous marathon at the end you have this jumbo street food all sorts of goodies stuff as well as other street food look at that it's pretty colorful so I'm gonna take a couple of steps and look back now at tenjinbashisuji check it out there it is there's the end I believe on the end look at that and it goes on straight for 2.8 kilometers you could take a misael if you were to launch it it would go straight through but it would take 2.8 kilometers or an arrow or something you could just shoot a laser go straight through 2.8 kilometers that's a lot of walking I don't know what you think but I think that this is a pretty amazing Street because it still retains the charm of the last generation it's got shops it's got shops of all different kinds you saw the knife shop we saw a flower or shops we saw lots of street food stands food selling beer and takoyaki lots of takoyaki we found kur okay which is breaded vegetables that are deep-fried kushikatsu as well lots of coffee shops tons of places to get a haircut all deep inside of here we saw shops from the Meiji period and shops from the Heisei period and maybe even a couple that were open this year which would make it ray hua which is the new era but all in all a very amazing Street I'm impressed I'm very impressed and when you're impressed usually you'll eat and this place is just right here so I'm thinking why not just get it something to eat and drink and celebrate a little bit all right what do they got here
