what's going on guys welcome back to classic octina i am taylor today is day one of the seven day bill challenge so if you're not familiar with this I did do a will it run video on this last week and told you guys that I wanted to challenge myself to build this bike from what you see now to a totally complete running riding you know ready to go motorcycle in seven working days so today is day 1 today is the day we're going to do a lot of kind of stripped down and getting the bike down to it's kind of bare pieces so that we can build it back up properly so we're going to need to pull this engine out so that I can properly clean it we can go through I think there's going to be some oil seals I'm gonna need to replace I need to finalize our frame modifications my goal from the end of the day is that we have a fresh coat of chassis black paint on this frame so that it can dry overnight and we can start to reassemble it tomorrow so in order to do that we need to get to work first thing I want to do is remove this exhaust we installed last week so this is a definite 4 into 1 I'll be using sounds really really good so I will remove this we will also pull off the carbs and get this engine ready to pull [Music] now that we have a little bit of wiring that's on the bike out of the way I do have a whole brand new wiring harness for this including a brand new ignition switch I mean this bike didn't really come with a whole heck of a lot so we're gonna be starting basically from scratch so that's good because the end product should be you know close to a brand new bike as far as the electronics and the switches and controls and speedo and all that kind of stuff you guys will see the parts I'm using as there we go and what I'm gonna do is put together a parts list that I will put in the description of the video and then I may end up putting like a link to my website or something like that where I can kind of go into a little bit more detail where I got each and every part but we'll figure it out I'll figure out the best way to give you guys all the information about the parts I'm using so I need to go ahead and get ready to pull this engine so to do that I need to get all of the you know the shifter the rear brake a lot of little mounts on the front off we'll take this back one off I'll lean probably just the bottom of two main bolts that go through to hold it in place and then we're ready to pull this thing out [Music] got all the levers clutch cable all that kind of stuff off so I am going to be pulling it this direction I'm going to try to just kind of walk it a little bit this way so that I can really grab underneath it pick it up put it over on the bench so that I can then hook up my connections to be able to put it on my engine stand that way we can roll it around nicely pressure-wash kind of all around and just kind of have better access to it so throw you guys back on the tripod and we'll see if we can wrestle this thing out without hurting it or ourselves [Music] cut the engine moved on to the stand I've showed this in the past just to give you guys a quick refresher of how I put these engines on the stand a couple of pieces of angle iron some all thread through these back to motor mounts and then just connected you know bolt it through to the piece that comes on the engine stand get it kind of centered up bolt this piece on and then you can take the red piece and just slide it on here so you're not trying to hold the engine up while you're bolting everything together hopefully that makes sense gets the engine nice level we have access to every component we could possibly need now this is going to be perfect for us to wheel it out in the driveway soak it down with degreaser give it a good pressure wash you know doing our best not to blow a bunch of water into the intake or into the you know breather or anywhere like that we'll put that cap back on maybe tape some stuff off if you're smart about it you can do it without getting a ton of water on the inside so before I do that I want to go ahead and start with this frame hoop so I'm gonna grab the grinder I'm gonna cut off these tack welds it looks like our front tank mount or the little rubber goes is broken as well so I'll probably throw a tank on here and we'll get prepared to make little tabs for this so that I can have the tank mounted where it's supposed to be then we can put the seat in place and we can make sure that our measurements are perfect for our frame hoop from my guesstimation was we'll need to add an inch but I want to make sure before we start to weld everything so I'm gonna move on to that because once that's done then we can wheel the frame outside and degrease and pressure wash and everything this at the same time as the engine [Music] [Music] well I've been working away so I figured I'd give you guys an update I do have a video on how I install frame hoops so I'll throw a card up to that if you're interested I basically just cut the tack welds off got rid of this one it's a little bit thinner wall than I like to use so I decided to just scrap that and go with one of my own and then I cut back a little bit further on this mount and then exposed the kind of stock frame that way we can get a good solid weld across here as well as down here and around and we can just basically get a nice solid connection on both sides I have it cut to length so that our tough side seat and goes just over the outside edge and goes all the way around so basically what I'm going to do now is just match up this kind of slight arch of the frame tack weld it in place give us a good double-check on the tough side see make sure everything fits nicely I'll finish weld it and then the next step after that is going to be cross brace somewhere around this area for the rear mounts for the seat and then another cross brace probably around this general area for the next amount we will be making a custom battery box here in the next couple of days but for now I want to get the hoop and then the seat mount done and then we can just build the battery box to mount to those [Music] little update got the seat mounted so you can see we just did two crossbars with four holes through them and then I take my I think it's five 16 18 all thread cut a piece about an inch inch and a half long screws into the bottom of the seat and then that goes through the four holes and then we will be using four wing nuts to bolt it down that way you can reach under here and undo it by hand to gain access to the electronics that will be inside the battery box here should you be out riding and need to access you know the fuse or whatever I don't want this to be permanently bolted I've talked about this a bunch in the past efforts you have it wingnut on that way you can remove it if you need to so now that part's done I need to see if there's any other frame modifications I'm actually thinking about building a little bracket off of the back of the hoop right here to run our tail light so I'll want to do that before I paint the frame as well so let me grab the tail light out of the parts and we'll put it up here and see if we want to build a little something to hold it here's what I decided for the brake light I basically just welded the bracket right to the end of the frame hoop and then when this is tightened up it'll be right there the wire can kind of wrap underneath it'll be nice and clean but it'll still be a high kind of Center mount brake light so that people will actually be able to see you which is you know of course the most important thing for a brake light to do so I don't like to run them you know down low kind of I've seen people just run them off of like a license plate bracket down here and you know I just don't think somebody from over here is gonna know you're breaking and I just prefer to have it as bright as possible with LEDs and it's high in a center mounted as possible so before I've done like LED strips in here and kind of anywhere around this general area want to try something a little bit different with this build so we're gonna go with that LED light mounted just like that I decided to makes more sense for me to go ahead and clean the rust off of the frame before I push side and pressure-washed the whole you know bike and the wheels and get all the grease and stuff off otherwise I'm gonna have to clean it twice so what I'm gonna do is just take my angle grinder pneumatic with one of these little stripping discs I have quite a few of them whole packing here and just it's gonna take forever but start to strip all this down you can see it's a lot of just it's just surface rust so it's not like heavily pitted or really like dug into the metal or anything it's just the paint was stripped off at some point and it's just got rust so I just need to go through and hit every single frame rail as much as I can get it down to clean metal then we'll go outside and clean the rest off [Music] I got I would say about 85 90 percent of the rust off came off nice and easy as I expected it's just a lot of little nooks and crannies and stuff but I need to get the kind of caked on grease and old dirt and stuff off first so that I can really see what little pieces I have left before we get to the point of being able to paint it so what I'm gonna do now is go ahead and pull this bike out and also take the engine out I'm gonna try a new technique we'll see how it works where I use this is heavy duty barbecue and grill cleaner very similar to oven cleaner basically it's just designed to get a lot of like caked on grease and gunk and stuff off this one says you only have to let it sit for eight to ten minutes for it to work so I'm gonna give it a shot we're gonna see if it works any better than my Zep degreaser I've used in the past all cleaned off now that I have all the grease out of the way I can see the final you know a little rough spots and stuff that I want to go in and make sure I clean up before any of this is painted I can also go ahead and continue to take it apart so I'm gonna go ahead and you know jack it up pull off the rear wheel probably pull off the rear shocks as well so we can have really good access to the swing arm we can start to check things like the wheel bearings and stuff just to make sure those are good and see if we have to replace those get ready to get the tires done stuff like that in the next couple of days as well so it is getting a little bit later in the day now but I'm gonna keep doing as much as I can so I'm going to go ahead and start to tear this back into part and my goal is to still get a coat of paint on the frame tonight for the engine it looks like at one point the center of this engine was black somebody had painted it and overall this thing doesn't look great it's like cleaned now but it's just really awful looking so I'm gonna go ahead and give most of this engine a coat of paint well I say most is you know I won't paint the side cover or I'll probably like vapor blast the caps and just you know did basically what we did on the restoration over there and keep a pretty OE look I wanted to be just one solid color I don't think I'm gonna go with black because I'm gonna end up painting these wheels black and you know obviously the frame is gonna be black the seat is black and I think if the engine was black too it would just be a little bit too much but the aluminum color I have on the cb500 is a little bit too bright I think like it doesn't look bad but I don't know I might actually end up going to the store probably in the morning and seeing if I can find a high temp engine paint that is just a couple of shades darker to coat the engine with but well wait on that right now so let's get to pull on the back end of this bike part [Music] so the paint I use I always mention this but just in case I get any questions is this VHT rollbar and chassis paint it seems to work really really well so I want to make sure that all the rest is gone then go through with wax and grease remover make sure everything is perfectly clean we will mask off anything that needs to be and then paint it up first coat is done and it's looking great very happy with the finish so far everything seems to have cleaned up really well I spent honestly probably another hour since the last clip cleaning up just every little rough spot I could find so what I'm gonna do now is go ahead and hit it with a heat gun that just kind of helps cure the pain a little bit there's VHT paint likes that quite a bit so what I did on the triumph frame so I'm gonna hit it with a heat gun around and then hit it with a second coat and we'll let that second coat cure overnight before we start to mess with it so the second coat of paint is on I did hit it with the heat gun to kind of get an initial cure but I do like I said want to leave it overnight just to make sure we're not going to start scratching and chipping any of this off so it is getting pretty late but what I want to do is take a little bit of time to start to clean up some of these components we pulled off earlier things like the kickstand the brake arm you know some of the shifter arm that kind of stuff a lot of it is either gonna stay metal or it's going to get a coat of paint either way I need to get a lot of this kind of grime and surface rust and stuff off of it so what I'm gonna do is just utilize my brass wheel on my buffer I use this thing all the time how do they recommend getting this kind of set up it does a great job cleaning up a lot of materials but it doesn't take away metal so it's not gonna grind into metal and stuff so I'm gonna do that for the next foreseeable future so my wife comes out here and says hey stop making noise I'm trying to go to bed and then we'll call it for day one of the seven day build all the parts of pieces cleaned up really nice I gave the kickstand a coat of paint also gave the little triangle motor mount plates a coat of paint as well they're hanging up there and drawing so it's late that's where I'm going to call it on day one of the seven day guys I hope you are enjoying it so far let me know what you think of the progress I think we did a whole heck of a lot for one day I'm really excited about that so tomorrow I need to probably figure out the paint on the engine and then figure out the front forks as well so I need to go out to my storage and see I feel gonna be a bike out there that hopefully will be able to donate its front forks for this build I think there is so we'll see tomorrow so I'm gonna edit this video first thing in the morning and upload it so you guys will see it tomorrow and then I'm going to do that every single day for this build I will basically film one day edit upload the next day so you guys will see five videos in a row and then probably a two day break because I'll be gone this weekend and then the next two videos after that so seven videos in the next week so I hope you guys are excited let me know what you think about this build again subscribe if you're into this kind of content and I will see you guys tomorrow you
