what's up guys welcome back to classic octane I am Taylor today we are unveiling the new motorcycle build I know you guys have been waiting for this for a while sorry there's been a little bit of a lull in videos I've just been focusing on real day job and other stuff going on so I finally got some time to get out here in the garage and right behind the camera here is the new build before we reveal the new build I want to give a quick shout out to everybody who's ordered Classic octane shirts stickers the new diodes all that stuff my orders have gone way up which really does help support the channel support more builds so I want to give a quick shout to you guys thanks very much if you haven't already make sure to one subscribe to the channel and two go check out my website for shirts and stickers so I know you guys have guesses let's reveal with the new bike is alright so it's not the cb500 you guys saw let me get running a little while ago boom here it is and all of her bone stock I'm gonna call it a barn find technically garage find glory so this is if you're not familiar is a 1978 Kawasaki KZ 750 it is 100% bone stock which is pretty cool pretty rare to find these there actually aren't that many that I could find online both builds or stock restorations or really videos in general they're not anywhere close to what the Honda's are as far as support so that's something that really excites me because you know there's probably a lot of people that are into these bikes that don't have a lot of resources or have a lot of you know entertainment to go and see somebody build one I've seen a couple of pictures online of bikes that are somewhat similar to the style I'm gonna go with and I'll get into that later so I'm really excited to dig into it get familiar with a totally new platform like I said I've done a ton of Honda's but I have never actually worked on the Kawasaki or even ridden one or really touch one so outside of loading it on the truck and then pushing it over here is the most experience I've ever had with a Kawasaki so it's going to be a whole new ballgame a whole new learning curve which I'm pretty excited about so this is a 750 CC twin so I believe they also made this bike in a four cylinder but this is the twin two cylinder model like I said it's 1978 last registered was in New York in 1983 so this bike hasn't run in well over 30 years 35 years which is pretty cool about the same story this one this one I believe was late 70s early 80s so we're in the same boat it does turn over nicely but here in the next couple of minutes we'll figure out just how big of a deal it's going to be to get it running so this particular bike I bought from an estate sale so my wife and I went to an estate sale I always go in the garage for obvious reasons try see what kind of tools and stuff I can get and lo and behold the bike was sitting there and I said okay I don't know much about Kawasaki but let me do a little bit of research there was only one or two other ones available in the Austin area and I was like okay I saw a couple online about it looks pretty cool decided all right I'm gonna go for it they had a price of 800 bucks on it with a clean title and I was like on the fence like that's a little bit higher than not what I would want to spend a bike I don't know much about it was a you know solid complete original CB 550 or something that I know a lot about it okay I know that's a good price well it got me to pull the trigger finally was I looked over and there was a sign that said 50% off day so we literally went on a day that everything was 50% off including the bike so I ended up getting this whole entire bike totally stock original with a title for 400 bucks which is a really really good deal so I don't I have not seen any of these anywhere close to that price point so I said hey what the hell let's learn a new bike and figure it out so the only thing I've sprayed in some of this stable fogging oil which is designed to coat the inside of cylinders of engines that are going to sit for a long and then gave the engine a few kicks see it's a nice so since this engine has not in theory run since the early 80s I am going to drain the oil and we're going to fill it up I always buy cheap oil to throw in these bikes just for you know first start up run it for a little bit drain it out put some quality oil in it so first things first we're going to drain the oil fill it up with some fresh stuff then we'll move on to throwing power to the bike to see if we actually can get spark and if our electric start works and you can kind of go from there got our drain plug done see what this oil looks like there's new dipstick on this bike that does not seem like there's a whole heck of a lot in there yeah that looked to be pretty empty so I'm glad we're doing this before we try and start it looks in really good shape though it's not even super black so I'm assuming somebody just put this in here at some point but most likely was never run on this oil so I just let this drain out all the way and then I think it takes two liters that sounds right I've oiled to fill it back up so let what little bit of oil we had in there drain out I haven't actually gotten a new oil filter for this bike but judging by how clean this oil was I'm not gonna worry about the oil filter right now we'll do the full official change and everything after we get further along in this process and we make sure the bike is kind of in good running condition everywhere else so what I'm gonna do now is just throw in some cheap oil so what I typically use is just like this traveler 1040 motor oil I just buy a tractor supply it's like 12 or 13 bucks for five quarts I think I was wrong earlier I said this bike will take like two liters it's actually closer four litres 4000 cc's of oil which I believe is just over four I was looking at the manual here and it says four liters so that's pretty much this whole container so we're gonna go ahead and do that it doesn't have a dipstick like I said but there is a little site glass down here on the bottom that you can kind of see the oil level so we put in four liters then I will figure out how to get to the battery I'm assuming it's behind here we'll throw a jump box on it and see if the electric start words good oil right in the center of our little sight glass there so I think we're good so I'm gonna throw a battery on it at the big grandpa banana seat flipped up out of the way and underneath here there's a insurance card from 1988 so the sticker on the front says 1983 but this end card says 1988 April 20th it's almost my birthday one year before I was born so this bike hasn't run since I've been alive which is pretty awesome so we're just gonna throw battery in here so got a book of matches 32 color photo special for 245 if you guys are interested in getting a deal on some color photos there you go I love like digging into these bikes and finding look at this it's like an original Kawasaki toolkit oh that's awesome all right we're gonna dig into that it's so I mean man this stuff gets me all jacked up I'm just like this bike hasn't been touched literally like since before I was born um which again I'm kind of aging myself there but we're gonna throw a battery on this thing and see see what happens see if we let out any magic smoke or anything crazy so I'm gonna pull the battery out of one of my other bikes and we'll throw it in here and I'm sure we're gonna need a battery charger jump box on there as well check this out in this little tool kit it's all the original Kawasaki branded wrenches and like multiple different size screwdrivers and spanner ranch and that's so cool I've never seen like Kawasaki branded tools before I figured I'd show that we're definitely gonna keep that with the bike that's really cool I hope you guys don't mind all the handheld stuff I'm just trying to shoot with the GoPro to make it a little bit easier than that my big DSLR camera so I have a battery I had to throw it down here cuz it's not the right size battery for this bike but it'll do for now turn my battery box on turn the key here okay neutral light got an oil light no funny business so far just try some simple stuff where's the headlights over here okay good light and I guess the signals turn on is uh is running lights got a taillight no signals back here so that's still weird high-beam ok got high beam low beam I can barely see my high beam indicator coming on just try a signal left turn killing it right turn mm even all our lights work horn OH sad little horn okay I'm gonna go ahead and hit this start switch and we will see you probably hear the nervousness in my voice if she turns over the electric start okay that's not working it may be one of those bikes though that has to have the clutch pulled let me set you guys up and then we'll we'll pull the clutch and see if that does anything moved you guys over to the bench pull it flush oh okay the petition just has to be run should be pretty charged okay so now that that's working what we want to do next I think I'm gonna pull the spark plug and let's see if we're getting spark all right just got it kind of laying up against the head there hopefully I can get down and not fall also pulling the clutch if the kickstand is up that does anything no okay you pull the clutch run hit the start button and see if we have any spark on there not seeing any I'm going to go ahead and check the other side too just to see if we can determine if it's a bad sparkplug if not we got to figure out where in the world on this bike the points are and see if we don't need to file some points but let's hop over to the other side and give that a shot okay I'm getting spark on this side pretty weak so the spark is pretty weak so I just pulled off the little points cover on this side and I'm just going to give these points a good file and clean up I have a Honda condenser we might be able to swap in it's pretty funny being a twin it's you know it might sound stupid but who's just half of what I'm used to saying because all the Honda's I work on are forests so I'm gonna clean those points up we're gonna throw a spark plug back in and see if our spark got any better ended up running to the store and picking up some new spark plugs I just got some in G case there was some champions in there but I don't know if those are original and kind of hard to believe that they put an American plug originally and in a Japanese bike so I went ahead with engine GK's like I said that's what I typically run so I'm gonna check the point gap on these but let's just see if they support better see but I'll tell you what I see oh yeah that's pretty good okay let me check these point gaps and install them I'm gonna make sure the other side is getting spark too and then spray a little flew down the carb and see what happens so I decided that I'm gonna go a step further on this one since I know it's been sitting for so long I pulled both the plugs out I'm gonna see if the starter will turn the engine over fast enough to build enough oil pressure in the system to make the oil light go off I know on Honda's it'll build enough with the starter motor alone so I'm gonna see if that I'll do it I just want to make sure that the whole top into the motor and everything is lubricated since it probably hasn't touched oil in that a couple of decades so cool a lot better doing that we have some circulating around and then we'll throw the plugs in yeah now's the time we're gonna spray some car cleaner down 30 cards and see what happened [Music] [Laughter] all right I did pretty good let's give it another shot [Music] the throttle is totally jammed so I can't actually manipulate anything that choke is even jammed and of some sort of position on my back all right let me charge the battery box and I gave the battery some charge also the battery jump box a little bit too I'm running out of time for tonight so I'm gonna give it another shot hopefully we'll have enough juice this time sweet so she runs I mean runs that's really awesome that is a really good sign so who okay yeah Wow that is sweet that was no no we didn't really have to do anything so this bikes literally been sitting for like thirty years and all we did was give it some battery juice some fresh oil some fresh spark plugs and file some points I mean that's that's a pretty awesome I always rave about like Honda's and their reliability but I mean I think this bike was pretty well loved before it was parked shows about just shy of 9,000 miles eight nine seventy four it's a pretty low mileage bike so that is really really awesome I'm pumped that's gonna do it for this video we're gonna break this one into a two-part episode basically so in the next one we will be pulling the carbs off cleaning them out I did purchase an ultrasonic cleaner that I have not used yet so I'm excited to see how that does I'm gonna be using this car cleaner in it if you guys follow Musti one I think is his YouTube channel you probably do he does stuff like this all the time that's what he puts in his ultrasonic cleaner so I figure we'll give it a shot so we'll be cleaning out the carbs the ideal situation in the next video is going to be we'll hook up our external fuel tank and have the bike sit and run an idle and we can check the charging system and kind of do the deep dive into the bike running but it made its own pops and bangs and that is incredible for the bike sitting for 30 years I'm really really really really excited that it was that easy and there was no major problems or anything so appreciate you guys watching if this is the first video you've seen of mine I have this project is done whole build series on my Triumph hardtail have two videos on getting this bike running very similar to what we just did so tons of motorcycle content also have my 69 Camaro we're working on content for so make sure to subscribe stick around and everybody that's been here a long time I appreciate you sticking with me and I'll see you guys in the next video
