now listen I have something I'd like you to do call me I want to check my phone make certain it rings hasn't been rung all winter that we know of it may have lost its what see you have my number what do you mean it's written on the phone there's nothing written on the phone oh I see what you mean yeah but I can't make it out it's too small sorry uh I should make the numbers bigger yep well it has a nine in it that that's all I know oh you'll have to look it up it's in the book you must have a book Norman Thayer jr. state of Maine bye who the hell is that someone at the door it's me you poop well look at you yeah quite a sight Anton yes where have you been in the woods in the woods how nice oh it's beautiful everything's just waking up little tiny birds little tiny leaves I saw three little tiny chippies and a whole patch of little tiny flowers by the old cellar hole I forget what they called it up the tiny yellow things and millions and millions of little tiny black flies in my air eyes and air it was just terrible do you plan on letting me in at some point in life how much more so what in the world were you doing out there in the woods getting kindling what do you think I was doing it's gonna be a bit nippy tonight I'd say oh look at this place yes it's a mess isn't it nothing worse lights are all on the blink the fan shot this thing here is completely kaput we should get our money back it's me long dark summer with no lights you might want to check the fuses were you planning on cleaning me with my backpack or wish I could that's what I thought last summer's last song remember I can't remember last week well you chose it it was raining we got soaked running to the car you complained all the way home we don't remember that yeah we got soaked the first time we heard it - at Marcos on the river in Philadelphia I know you remember that and we danced in the rain remember no shall I turn it off no want to help me with a dust cover Hey what in the world happened to the screen door it fell over what do you mean I pushed the door and the door fell over but he's not supposed to do that when you push it I didn't think so I'll fix it later well you might have closed the big door we'll be swatting up black flies for the next two days Oh omen oh it is so beautiful and we are so lucky aren't we remember how Chelsea used to run in on our first day back they could stop the car at the old town road and she'd run ahead with Chung and even before Chun to say hello to the lake painting never seems quite complete without her in it [Music] this summer maybe this summer we could convince her to come and spend a few days wouldn't that be fun look have you ever seen a more perfectly folded dust cover the Marines would weep I made a very nice couple in the woods oh you met a couple in the woods a couple of people know a couple of antelope of course a couple of people you needn't be too careful with that I'm gonna hang them on the line anyway Oh what were these people doing in the woods walking they said their name is migliori I think or something maybe we re good God what sort of name is that Italian I suppose man do they speak English well of course they speak English how do you think I talk to them you're not fluent in Italian they're yeah help me with this they're a very nice middle-aged couple just like us well if they're just like us they're not middle-aged middle-aged means the middle Ethel the middle of life people don't live to be 150 the far edge of middle-age that's all we're not you know we're not middle-aged you're old and you're in your seventies and I'm in my 60s barely on both counts are we going to spend the afternoon quibbling about this we can have your like guess who else I ran into oh you ran into someone else the woods are full of people it was only charlie who's charlie charlie the mailman what was Charlie the mailman doing in the woods he was on the road oh you were on the road too now you didn't say that you said you were in the woods Road runs through the woods yes of course it does he says he's gonna come finish putting in our dock for us I'll put it in the dark no you won't put in the diner I'm certainly qualified to put in a dock because you're too old I'm not old at all I'm middle-aged Charlie says it'll be another two weeks before he starts delivering the mail by boat he just wanted to make sure we were okay he must be the busiest man in the state of Maine mm-hmm I should think so certainly the dimmest witted Norman I remember Charlie when he was just a little fella he used to laugh at everything yes I thought then he was a bit deficient charlie must be 30 by now charlie is 44 two years older than Chelsea Chelsea is 42 our Joseph Raisa good god [Music] huh what do you think quite a sight I should say so how's the table that heavy as a matter of fact my father made this table as practically as old as the house your father made that yes first summer I went to camp cook I I don't help Charlie says he doesn't expect Miss appley to make it up this year who's miss appley Miss appley who lives with Miss Tate how do you like this one stunning they must be in their 90's i would think i mean they were up here together when i was a teenager hmm wearing their neckties and singing in the gazebo holding hands what a marvelous love affair can you imagine being together for so long nope thanks a lot charlie says miss apple is just too frail and miss tape won't come without her one of them has a a nephew I believe who'll get the house it's sad isn't it who the hell's in this picture here some young pipsqueak with a fancy car look at this Punk wait it's you Norman and your Cadillac remember out by the Bailey bridge the summer of the hurricane he was so proud of his hair and eyes all rusted away the bridge I mean oh oh look at these cobwebs come hold the ladder for me will you oh I hate these things nice legs Thank You oh spider relax spider spider alert oh go away oh poor Elvis had a terrible form whose poor Elmer oh my dolly he fell into the fireplace poor thing poor oh the life you've had you know he turned 60 this spring I must say I was not aware of that yeah I got him for my birthday I've wanted a red scooter but my father said red scooters were excessive and contrary to the ways of the Lord he told me I'd understand when I got older well I'm a lot older now and I still don't understand but he gave me Elmer an Elmer and I became the best of friends he was my first true love you know there's no real need for you to review the vagaries of your youth I've realized all along I was not the first in line no you were a rather cheap substitute for my darling ailment he doesn't look that old a bit faded perhaps but he'd still be a delight to a small child Chelsea used to love him and now he's had a fall poor dear well maybe he's trying to kill himself maybe he wants to be cremated probably has cancer or termites or some would you please shut up I swear you get more morbid every year well it wouldn't be a bad way to go would it a quick front flip off the mantel a bit of a kick at the last minute and you'll land in the fireplace nothing to it are you hungry Norman oh when my number is up do that for me would you prop me up on the mantel and point which way is down I may even shoot for a full gainer with a half twist No that little kick at the end it might give me trouble you could get Charlie and hoist me back up if I make a mess of it no man give me three tries and we'll go for the highest score Norman you are not remotely funny you won't even need an urn just shovel me out when I'm done and sprinkle me on your flower your fascination with dying is beginning to frazzle my good humor don't you have anything else to think about nothing quite as interesting well what's stopping you then why don't you just take your dive and get it over with see what it's like and leave you alone with Elmer you must be mad they're probably hundreds of Ellmers out there waiting for you to get free I know all those widows stories ha ha see you plan on answering that at some point in life [Music] hello yes just a moment it's for you who is it not st. Peter will you come get the phone he'll be right with you he's just getting off his high horse [Music] hello who's this the operator how nice what do you want Oh to check the ring I'd given up on you does it work what I suppose it did that's why we picked up so everything's hunky-dory here then thank you I beg your pardon Oh uh-huh goodbye she said to have a nice day what'd you think I was gonna do oh that phone works good well that's one thing then isn't it what about your fishing gear been through it yet this year no I thought about be doing any fishing this time around alright seems a shame to spend the money on a license alright you think they'd give it free to an old case like me alright just as though I'm gonna deplete the entire truck population or anything you always catch your share you always have yeah well that's all behind me now right Norman Oh oh my goodness what oh come here quick what is it not your heart no it's the loons I've spotted the loons get the glasses oh it is so lovely can you see them no oh my goodness there they aren't they lovely they're huge I've never seen such big blooms in my life now there's a boats you coupe in closer by the float see look a husband and wife they're looking at us I think they're talking can't quite make out what they're saying can you read beaks yes saying welcome home welcome back to the lake that never changes I look out I swear I can see Chelsea climbing onto the float trying and trying to learn her back you think after all this time she'd finally get it she did it for you anyway she only wanted to please you what if she just decided to come on her own this year without anybody prompting her or anything you'd like that wouldn't you I suppose so hmm me too oh it's so romantic the Sun hanging over the water the ever-changing painting [Music] dance with me Norman - are you mad I can't walk without falling over [Music] [Music] do you realize this is our 48th year together through her our 48 summer [Music] probably be our last [Music] Oh [Applause] [Music] here's one listen driver wanted for occasional errands and chauffeuring five days a week sounds about right doesn't it experience required well I've had experience driven enough cars God knows how many cars would you say I've had 20 probably if you don't count the Nash twenty cars and one - sounds like experience to me I think I'll give these fellows a call oh there's no number that's typical offer a man a job and don't risk the number well I hope those errands weren't too crucial someone's at the door me you poop open up Norman hmm what in the world are you doing out here I was picking berries there are rules and orders of little tiny strawberries along the old town road unfortunately there are also portals and oodles of mosquitoes worse this year than ever really I hadn't noticed that's because you've barely been outside will you let me in Oh and close the door quick hey whatever you're doing inside on a day like this is beyond me I've been quite busy I've been looking through yesterday's newspaper for gainful employment ah here we go again very good prospects I think chauffeurs yardwork the dairy divine wants an ice-cream Dipper I think I can do something like that don't you where the hell are you oh there you are well what do you think I think looking in the classified ads is the silliest nonsense I've ever heard what are you gonna do if someone says come on over and start tomorrow go on over and start tomorrow whatever is the matter with you why don't you take a bucket and go pick us another quart of strawberries I'll fix us a scrumptious shortcake for lunch you want me to pick strawberries yes do I have to put an ad in the paper I'm not sure I know how to pick strawberries there's really nothing to it you just bend over and you pick them bend over where are they on the ground where they belong last time we pick blueberries they were on a bush didn't have to bend over at all well these are strawberries and they grow on the ground do you think you can do it yes but you've already filled the buckets don't move ah here comes what's his name what's his name Charlie Charlie you'll be bringing the paper I wouldn't want to miss any career opportunities just because I was out looking for strawberries I'll pay you Norman you could become a major strawberry picker this could be the start of something big yeah not if I have to keep bending over all that I think you're trying to kill me I've thought about it yes well you needn't bother I'm on borrowed time as it is would you take your cheery personality and get out of here I hope that you will be prepared to massage my bent back this evening with pleasure maybe I can lie down to pick the berries you go on excuse me where did you say the strawberries were other than on the ground on the old town road just up from the meadow [Music] cooee Johnny water death oh oh come on up dear want a biscuit no that's okay okay uh uh come in come in the coast is clear what a day hurt Johnny you're part of a perfect photograph did you know that oh if I had I want to put on a clean shirt come in come in oh I think I broke your door no it's been that way for a month now Norman's supposed to fix it oh I could give it a try it's just missing this little thingamabob better let Norman get to it come on come in before every mosquito in the county finds its way in hello how's your brother we haven't seen him at all this season oh you mean Tom well that's the only brother you have isn't it yeah I guess it is you just come back up from Portland you got stopped twice for speeding once down and what's up policeman I love your life charlie oh it just struck me as awfully funny he could be stupid enough to be stopped twice by the same cop when he told me I couldn't stop laughing the Tom's not speaking to me anymore where's Norman ah picking strawberries I flew out no don't laugh Norman is Restless this year I don't know what's got into him how's your mother my mother oh she's holding her own she fell down you know a couple of months ago oh I didn't know that poor dear oh right on her rock she was out helping clean the town corner with the ladies Ladies Auxiliary she got a tug of war with the dead juniper bush and she won or lost depending on how you look at it been normal since maybe she walks all right and sleeps and everything you just can't sit it's taking a little adjustment you paw the expression notes he's one old lady who really believes in Boston or asked for her community what are you doing home already you've barely left so I moved fast ran all the way pick for that stopping ran all the way back I don't believe a word of it let me see what you've got I'll just dump them in with you come on let me see oh well there's nothing in it at all you didn't pick a single strawberry what's the matter I must have eaten them all well why didn't you stay and pick some too many mosquitoes you were right I was afraid I'd contract malaria and die before my time well I don't know you want some coffee no no mail today charlie Oh holy Mackinaw Lee I must have left it on the deck that was dumb wasn't it yes you want a glass of milk Norman no fine I'll get you one I say you broke the screen door charlie yeah well I think yeah you need a couple of thing on my Barber's for the him oh I don't know about that it was working fine and you must say yanked out of it well I could bring a couple down tomorrow no no you just be careful next time let's have the mail oh yeah I've got a package for ya not my new bicycle is it no ring this thank you nurse sit charlie well I should get going - somebody's not gonna get their mail he's right you know Ethel neither rain nor sleet nor hot biscuits oh sit down and finish your coffee you'll be perfectly safe sit what have you got there Norman I have no idea I can't open it would you bite this please oh it's your medicine no goodie what is well surprise it's about time you were almost out it's for his palpitations and that's right Charlie I have the occasional heart throbs look at this a pill from gas and power in Wilmington and we're not even there give this back to them will you oh and since you're playing mailman why don't you just deliver all this to that old lady over there you gotta see what's going on in the world I need some touch with reality I light it from Chelsea I noticed that how is she Norman hmm Chelsea who your daughter Chelsea how is she over 42 no no how is she I have no idea you have to ask her mother Ethel hmm how is she mm-hmm Robin she really 42 uh-huh semi that's what her mother says holy Mackinaw all the way through and never had kids what all the way through what Oh child there he is look at those stupid bread socks oh she sounds like she's having the best time oh where is she writing from I couldn't make out the post my home I figured where she lived now on the coast you better tell him which coast Oriole think she's in Bar Harbor she's in California Charlie I knew that he knew that Oh concern you Yankee Oh Norman she says she's coming for your birthday and she's bringing her friend with her she has the nicest boyfriend Oh just decided on her own to come just like that yeah no prompting from anyone what are you saying as a likely story Oh poo that's coming together as part of a vacation that's all and then they're going on to Europe oh well I don't want crowds of people here at my birthday I don't want crowds of people watching me turn older well they'll just be the three of us is three that's what they said that's right three's a crowd what happened to a husband wait a minute it's not that Freddy person this is a different boyfriend all together Norman what no I'm still staggering from the coincidental handiwork of mrs. Machiavelli over there Oh what did you say Charlie I wonder what happened to Chelsea's husband he didn't work out oh my she says she's in love with a dentist really does her boyfriend know about this that is her boyfriend her new boyfriend is a dentist what that's interesting that's who she's bringing here a dentist good god who'd be staring at her teeth all the time why does she have such a fascination with Jewish people well who says this one's Jewish well he's a dentist isn't he name me one dentist who isn't Jewish your brother my brother's deceased name me one living dentist who isn't Jewish I can't think of any of her huh dr. Beeler who's dr. Beeler my dentist he's in Maine Charlie there are no Jews in Maine Oh Lord Norman's on a tirade I'm afraid this particular dentist whom she's bringing for your birthday is called ray and that doesn't sound remotely Jewish not that it matters it would depend on his last name that is his last name his last name is ray yes bill ray bill ray sounds rather flippant so I asked them not to come oh no I think we should have representatives from all walks of life at my last birthday party I think this medicine should be put away from all this hot air why didn't you marry Chelsea you wouldn't let me you could have married someone else I would have allowed that I didn't want anyone else I'm have comp laws it's still time yeah you got lots of time so how are we be when are your birthday 103 really kid 900 yeah you know Miss appley was it was 97 in May isn't that amazing yes she died you know no yep last Tuesday got a call Casey any mail came up they gave you a forwarding address for Miss appley one of the lesbians expired Norman holes which one exactly oh yeah well she had a good full life well Charlie says she was 97 puts us all to shame doesn't it something to be said for a deviant lifestyle I always liked those old ladies I sure used to wonder what the heck was going on in there well thanks for the coffee in the biscuits anytime dear you must come around when Chelsea's here yeah well for damn sure if that's okay if nobody minds I have seen her in a long time must be well let's see it was uh some of the father died I was 36 at the time I'm 44 now and that's eight years hey yes holy Mackinaw me well I'll see you tomorrow okay dear Norman mmm Charlie's leaving good bye watch out for the screen door oh he really is a poop he's neat see now loons out there today chil yeah bout the honey island they're teaching the baby to fly oh how exciting oh maybe they'll bring him round and introduce us goodbye Charlie oh isn't that exciting teaching their baby to fly norman elderly gentleman he wanted for companionship and conversation for convalescing invalid three afternoons a week doesn't that sound perfect perfect for you I wouldn't have much hope for the invalid is that why you came rushing back here to read those stupid ads could be maybe I should have asked Charlie if you need another man on the boat I could balance out there on the deck and fall off at every dock we come to be a source of amusement around the lake there'd be a great boom for the postal department get more people writing letters what do you suppose Charlie would pay me Oh whatever is the matter with you why do you need a job you've always loved being on Golden Pond with nothing to do why is this summer any different I'm in the market for a last hurrah Oh Lord why can't you just pick berries and catch fish and read books and enjoy this sweet sweet time do you want to know why why I came back so fast with my little bucket got to the end of our lane and [Music] I couldn't remember where the old town road was I went a little way into the woods nothing looked familiar we're one tree scared me after death so I came running back here to you see your pretty face and to know that I was safe but I was still me [Music] well you're safe you old fool yeah and you're definitely still you still picking on poor Charlie after lunch after we gobble up all those strawberries I'll take you down to the old town road you'll remember it all my darling we've walked it a thousand thousand times and we'll pick us another batch of those little tiny strawberries and I'll do the bending you just talk away the mosquitoes [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Oh get away you nasty things get away get away Norman for God's sake what in the world is going on down there you and your screen door the must keep trying to get in I swear you're on their side they're gonna crash my party elected to be the social event of the summer season oh look at you you have on a time yes I know I put it there hey I think I'm overdressed I think I'm gonna have to do some fast maneuvers to catch up I have other ties you could come as Miss appley whoa thank you and same to you welcome home Chelsea I see my birthday wasn't cause enough for celebration yes what a little girl to feel welcome did you know that our little girl passed through her childbearing years without bearing child of course I knew that she chose not to that's all did you ever have that woman-to-woman chat with her and maybe she didn't know how I told her how 25 years ago she seemed to know what I was talking about maybe I should have taken that husband of hers aside I have never known anyone so timid in all my life every poor soul she's brought home has seemed timid around you wouldn't it be nice if we could all get along this time hmm I intend to be the perfect host I shall overwhelm them with my charm oh that's what I'm afraid of why aren't they here I'm getting older by the minute no they said they'd be here when they get here well that's a that's a that's a hell of a it's no wonder we have no grandchildren what would we do with grandchildren toss them on our knees we're the last of the Thera settle you and I enter the line for a damn good name oh well we'll take it out into style Oh Norman oh the loons Oh why is it so dark because Sun went down oh I wish I could see them little baby's gotten so big you should do that in front of Chelsea's companion know who I just say hello to my friends that's all hello oh there yeah oh and I'm not dressed you look dressed well I wanted to look nice I look like an old character you are an old character go upstairs and change of that makes you feel better I'll stay here and entertain them I'll make them feel welcome will you be nice to them sure Chelsea oh oh hello Norman happy birthday look at you look a little fat girl Ethel oh stop it just thin as a rail isn't she Norman oh yeah Oh Chelsea I am so glad you're home I thought we'd never get here we rented a car that explodes every 40 miles you rented a car yes in Boston uh-huh what sort of car is it um I don't know uh red I think Oh a red car no no I meant what sort of make is it uh I don't know Hey she doesn't know dear it doesn't matter well of course it doesn't matter I was just curious well if I should have looked I guess it's a it was very ugly and it breaks down alive ugly and breaks down a lot sounds like a Nash probably your rented car company bought up all the old Nash's all over the country and are renting them to unsuspecting customers who can't differentiate between the mix of automobiles I'll bet I'll bet too well well the old house looks exactly the same the old house is exactly the same just older like its inhabitants and dustier I don't know where it comes from out here in the woods the bugs bring it in I think you've been busy everything in the house looks so colorful thank you too much time on my hands Syrian welcoming and happy where's your friend you did bring your friend didn't you go I knew I was forgetting something so that's still on then is it as far as I know it was two minutes ago but it wouldn't be the first time I've been deserted are you two ready you can come in now no one's gonna bite you I hope mommy and Norman this is Billy Ray how you doing you seem awfully young to be a dentist this is Billy Ray jr. oh I'm Norman Thayer jr. where's daddy is out trying to soothe the car what a nice surprise hello Billy you may call me Ethel and you can call Norman Norman I like your logic mummy I better see if bills driven into the lake yeah I hear you turned 80 today is that what you heard that's really old oh you should meet my father your father still alive no but you should meet him isn't this fun what a great surprise ACK Norman why don't we put Billy up in Chelsea's old room he can look out over the lake in the morning yeah well why don't we put him out on the float and he can look at the lake all night long I'd like that you'd be eaten alive by all the bugs I'm afraid so Norman take him upstairs and show him where everything is come on boy get your clutter I just had a birthday - I turned 14 two weeks ago we're practically twins no dude we're were 65 years and and fifty weeks apart quick aren't you he's coming he thought you had to lock the door oh well you never know the changes around here Oh Norman looks very old really well I don't know you look great though oh thank you so do you I love your hair like that you do houses mind remembering things any better he's alright come on boy I'll show you the bathroom if I can remember where it is look at you you made it yes I think I saw a bear well I doubt that bill um this is my mother mommy this is Bill ray welcome to Golden Pond thank you and a California hello to you oh do you have a dog no I I tried to interest Norman and getting a dog but he went into some morbid diatribe about how unfair it is to bring in a puppy if you're planning to die soon you could have gotten him an old dog something on its last leg one of your neighbors have dogs I don't believe so no and I definitely saw a bear well they're probably just a wild boar nothing to worry about do you want to visit the men's room before you experience the thrill of meeting my father uh no I think I'll be all right okay dad too late anyway they do have indoor plumbing that Chelsea was just bullshitting us well uh I always tried to paint a rustic picture of life here on Golden Pond it's lovely though lovely rusticity we have been peeing indoors for 40 years oh you must be Norman yes I must be who are you bill ray bill ray the dentist yes want to see my teeth no hugging Chelsea Charlie's been asking for you Oh Norman Charlie holy mackanolly Charlie is our mailman he was also my boyfriend every summer for 12 years you taught me everything isn't that amazing it is when you know charlie haha good old Charlie well I'm going to go say hello to the lake anyone want to come me I've never seen anyone say hello to a lake before well and this will be a valuable experience for you wise guy it's always my first order of business when I get to Golden Pond I'm becoming mommy yes want to take the boat yeah sure why not um you're coming bill we're outside well that's where the lake is coming Norman no I think I'll just stay here and enjoy the quiet I think I'll stay too with Bill we can talk baseball great great great I'll get the yard light we keep it turned off to discourage the junebugs who apparently haven't realized it's July hey get down come on everybody ready can I just quit quickly for the marketing oh the screen doors falling down oh really Norman we'll fix it sure is ugly hearing it yes it's it's quite difficult to live with ever been in a boat on a lake full of rocks in the dark um no good it'll make it more fun come on come on chest so you're a baseball fan huh nope oh I like baseball I like the Dodgers oh really they moved out west somewhere didn't they yes to Los Angeles about 40 years ago they're still in the big leagues yes a real powerhouse the National League West well bless their little hearts how does it feel to turn 80 twice as bad as it did turning 40 oh I know what that's like I turned 40 five years ago I'm 45 now oh boy I love your house thank you it's not for sale well I wasn't thinking of buying it I just like it it has a charming ambiance does it yes yes it does oh yeah Norman may I call you Norman I believe you just did what I call your wife um how about Ethel that's her name Ethel Thayer found that if I'm listening doesn't it Ethel Thayer almost kept her from marrying me she wanted me to change my last name to hers really what was that I don't remember there's something I want to ask you what what sort of car did you rent to drive up here today Taurus Ford Taurus and what sort of car do you have where you live out there in Disneyland Lexus LS 430 the big one Japanese isn't it yes I think I'll start a new book see if I can finish it before I'm finished maybe a novelette something in Reader's Digest condensed ah here's a Swiss Family Robinson you ever read it oh yeah it's great I'd recommend it no need I've read it too but my mind is going so it'll all be new to me has that son of yours read this book no I don't think so your son has not read Swiss Family Robinson oh but I intend to have him read it his mother's been the motivating force in his life for the last few years poor kid and now I'm trying to eradicate the dishevelment yeah things have been coming together for me pretty nicely now the practice is real strong I'm feeling very good about myself meeting Chelsea has been a major thing and she's flowering like crazy do you like your job a lot she's doing some terrific paintings we have a very proactive relationship terrific synergy I'm sure you'd be pleased what do you charge for a filling hey you're a dentist aren't you what do you charge for a filling I starting at about $95 $95 good god my brother charged 15 right up to 1988 when he raised her to 20 that's when I stopped going to him your brother's a dentist he was when he was living isn't that amazing oh I don't know I think every family has one Norman I don't want to offend but there's a rather important topic I feel I need to broach if it's all right with you we'd like to sleep together what do you mean we'd like to sleep together in the same room in the same bed if you don't find that offensive all three of you what no just to you and Billy no not Chelsea and Billy no sir that leaves only Chelsea and you yes why would I find that offensive you're not planning to do anything unusual are you oh no just that doesn't seem too offensive as long as you're quiet great I'd be delighted to have you abusing my daughter under my own roof Norman would you like the room where I first violated her mother or would you be interested in the master bedroom Ethel your son and I can sleep out back and you could do it right there on the hop having a good time aren't you uh-huh Chelsea told me all about you I'd like to have a good time with people's heads I just want you to bear in mind that I'm very good at recognizing crap when I hear it you know it's not imperative that you and I be friends but it might be nice I'm sure you're a fascinating person I'm sure it'd be fascinating to get to know you that's obviously not an easy task but it's all right you go ahead and be as poopy as you want to quote Chelsea and I'll be as pleasant as I can I just want you to bear in mind that while we're sitting here smiling at each other and you're jerking me around I know precisely what you're up to and I'll only take so much of it very nice good speech real spunk no wonder Chelsea plucked you out of a teeming masses Bravo thank you I just want to make sure we have this little matter clear we can't sleep together right yes please do just don't let FO catch you dad I paddled a canoe it's a book just like the Indians head well actually the Indians used a different grade of aluminum Chelsea wants you to come down she and Ethel are going skinny-dipping skinny-dipping go ahead permissiveness runs rampant up here on Golden Pond are there Bernie bears around these parts sure Black Bears Grizzlies one came along last month on a tan old lesbian go on daddy's bullshitting you that man in there reads books you know what that means it means they don't have cable I've already spoke tit out it means that when you sit down and talk to me what you're going to do you'll be respectful and maybe you'll learn something ain't talking to that old creep what if you like dies or something but what if you die on the first day of our trip it could happen [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] lovely night isn't it nights like this they say this when red macaron comes ashore whoo oh I'm sorry I thought Chelsea might have mentioned him red muttering he was the one I had one league leader of the notorious pirates of Golden Pond murdered most of the original summer people Ethel doesn't like me talking about it because he cut off all their fingers and used them for bait couldn't find any worms apparently which is why I stay inside so I guess you ain't going skinny-dipping huh after what I just told you not on your life that's all you like that word don't you I like it alright it's a good word is that fish thing real yes in a dead sort of way yeah Chelsea says you're like this big shot big deal fisherman she calls you the old man of the sea yeah I've caught a few I still keep a finger in it do you fish Yeah right why do you walk what with your shoulders all bent like that a lot of my line what do you do out there in California since you don't fish cruise chicks what meet him girls hello you try to pick them up and what do you do with them once you have them suck face I beg your pardon kiss you don't get how much do you suck face kiss here read this the first chapter you'll like it go on let me see you stand up straight come on nobody has that much on his mind good good very good you should do that more often make it easier to bear your heavy load Bill's getting dressed it probably might have been better not to use the word snapping turtle with a guy's skinny dipping for the first time we do when I'm feeling diminutive sorry though he seems perfectly capable of taking care of himself very small and friendly mm-hmm a real catch I'd say I'd love so much to see you happy Chelsea and to settle down funny me too maybe I will someday when the time is right when is laughs I wonder the right time just out of curiosity I don't believe I've ever known is this Alexa yeah I'm getting a lecture aren't I do you need a lecture I've got plenty saved up well you know what I'm not you I'm not gonna be married 400 years and grow old with somebody I'm already old I'm gonna go to Europe with Bill I hope that the Eiffel Tower doesn't fall down on us and maybe he is a catch but I've caught a lot of fish in my time and they were none of them keepers plus he has this large child thing who probably thinks I'm something from the snapping turtle family I just want to have a few laughs okay and hope for the best [Music] that is not the way to behave it yes are you gonna tell me maybe try it again Elsie [Laughter] oh there you are uh-huh I thought you'd be nude luck bill seems nice doesn't he so lively yeah I'll say he says they want to sleep together I expected that well they're big people you and I did yeah I told him well you didn't have to tell them Oh Norman Norman there's something I want us to do for Chelsey let her leave Billy with us for a month which Billy maybe the little one Ben supposed to have him for the summer but he'd be miserable in Europe they could pick him up in August and they could be alone shall we say yes no Norman he's a sweet boy yeah the sort that comes and slits your throat in the night yeah where are you going to bed you take first watch Norman get back here the boys had a troubled home life his dad's trying so hard he's gonna break in half Chelsea's on pins and needles we have to do something where is the boy anyway well I sent him upstairs with a good book he's probably out the window by now hot-wiring my car go get him while I put dinner back on Norman we are the luckiest people in the world all our precious seasons on Golden Pond we've been given another summer who knows how many more they'll be let's make this one the one we'll never forget I've already forgotten what you're saying good then just say yes yes thank you I love you too [Music] [Music] tiny suggestion if I might at some point you might want to consider placing the bait in the relative vicinity of the fish if you expect them to bite you bite yeah you bar you buy it you buy black you bite everyone thanks when you're fourteen you don't know nothing Sam at 80 the sad song of the not-quite men know what they're not quite men you're not one yet I'm not one no more well that bites yeah it bites you ever think about dying Norman why are you thinking of killing me I have no choice but to think about it everywhere I turn my mortality is broadcast like the Evening News can't get insurance can get special strength cement to keep my dentures from falling out at inopportune moments sometimes think I should just go ahead and get it over with it's expected of me we'd hate to disappoint wouldn't we yeah what the what what the what what the fill in the blank I was disappointing everybody so do what's in your heart that's my theory it doesn't work but you know what the what uh-huh huh what in the world happened to the screen door Norman and I fixed the mother yeah where mother fixes Chelsea spent her entire life on that swing I dearly hope it's not the same rope well there'll be pieces of you floating all over the lake Shh you'll ruin the surprise just don't let him get my fingers that's all I ask you ever hear of Red macaron he was a pirate as I recall yeah with one leg one eye and no bait yeah we're thinking of joining up me in Norman oh sorry Norman and I and spend the rest of the summer pillaging and marauding that sort of thing I'm cruising chicks well not today you're not it's gonna rain any minute loons have been calling for it all morning listen to them rain raining big storm coming stay off the lid no is that what they're saying cuz I'm getting don't listen to that half-naked woman ranting dementedly well you'll be sorry and you are not going fishing no good but we haven't caught Walter yet you know who Walter is I am familiar with his work and the fact that together you've managed to crash the boat once get lost three times and catch every other fish in New England doesn't count no right Norman bingo well I'm sure Walter will still be here when the storm passes in the meantime you two juvenile delinquents can certainly find some other trouble to get yourselves into how about a game of Parcheesi and I'll make us some hot oatmeal and a nice cup of tea Oh well don't blame me when the typhoon hits it's always so nice to be listened to oh well at least you're well behaved the one person I can depend on to never disagree with me Elmer [Music] look at them up there they're a rum lot aren't they the pirates of Golden Pond they say the lake is dying but I don't believe it they say all those houses along kucik III Shores a killing Golden Pond see Elmer no more yellow tents in the trees no more Bell calling the girls to suffer I used to leave you sitting in my window to look out camp kucik aye aye when I was eight and nine and ten and I would stand on the cove across the river and I would see you at sunset and I'd wave and you always waved back didn't you omit I can see the stars way up in the sky from my tent on the bank of the lake it can't kucik aye aye what's a terrible song I can see the trees and the hills beyond from my tent on the bank of the lake cold cold and pond on Golden Pond we are the girls of camp cook aye aye hiiii you can tell who we are our minds are clear and our hearts are strong we are dancing here but we won't be long there will soon be dear we're there now aha we'll remember our years old Pond on Golden Pond okay no I'd like to shoot myself unless you wouldn't mind putting me out of my misery hey Kara pamba rumba Cebu Lee Kabul e-wrap amber Rikuo remember ikutsu ki maro which means what I have no idea what are you doing here you're not coming to the 15th today's the 15th no oh oh California of you look at you you've had that robe for as long as I can remember yeah it looks like it I could probably be arrested in this looks great and so do you you look like the mountains Oh a Z and I've been here since the Ice Age or I I should switch to low fat Geritol huh it's what happens you know when you live long enough you end up being old you must have left Boston at the crack of dawn well I left Boston in the middle of the night I felt like driving I didn't feel like getting lost there you go well if you come home more often you wouldn't get lost you're right if I promise to come more often will you give me a cup of coffee I could do that come inside and sit down you must have had a lovely time you look wonderful that looks like our boat out there and it's been appropriated by pirates a very foul-mouthed punishable isn't it gonna rain any second I hope so they gotten along okay Norman and Billy Billy is the best thing to happen to Norman since Roosevelt I should have rented him a fourteen-year-old boy ages ago but you could have traded me in I'm sure Billy makes the better son than I ever did well you made a very lovely daughter here come in does he put the worm on the hook by himself I'm really not sure it's not the sort of thing I like think about over breakfast you lose points if you throw up I remember that Oh Chelsea I used to apologize to those nice worms before I impaled them they'll get even with me someday won't they beginning to sound an awful lot like your father you never bailed me out what what are you talking about you always took his side do you realize that whatever the battle that's where you stood on his side Chelsea you need to eat you want some oatmeal I want it to be over I am so tired of walking through that door and feeling like a little fat girl again because you know what I'm not fat I'm beautiful well of course you are it's just your father's way yeah I know thank you incidentally she said as a self-centered afterthought for taking care of the kid oh thank you I'm glad it gives us another chance to see you plus it's been a tremendous education Norman's vocabulary will never be the same but that's alright look at this Chelsea on the swim team that was a great exercise in humiliation oh stop it you what a good diver I wasn't a good diver I was a good sport I never could do a damn backflip remember Nagasaki Chelsea Norman called me let me go again Chelsea Chelsea can't you be home for five minutes without getting started on the past I don't know I guess not I act like a big person everywhere else I'm in charge of LA this house seems to set me off well it shouldn't it's a nice house full of nice memories I see no need to look in the dust to find out how much sadness there is lying there you're a big girl Chelsea I'm just sick of it life marches on yeah your life and you're a perfect ass on your perfect Lake you don't know it's like being reminded how worthless you are every time that old son of a crosses your path walk adult son of a happens to be my husband I'm sorry Chelsea I'm sorry that he's not always kind it's not always easy but i gakuto kai i go to and i've worked very hard to keep the gleam in my eye clear heart so strong to him put it to rest yeah it will someday someday we'll be friends again Chelsea he's he's 80 he has heart palpitations and a problem remembering things when exactly do you expect this friendship to begin maybe I'm afraid of him something like that good he's afraid of you you'll get along fine golden Oh such a nice person can't you think of something nice to say no oh yeah I married bill in Brussels you did what in Brussels married bill you count in this country fraid so oh-oh-oh congratulations you have an odd way of building up to good news huh bill seems like a very fine fish oh he's a trophy suitable for mounting if it doesn't work out I still get to keep my gold caps yeah what about Billy bill gets to keep Billy it's why we have to get back to LA so he can murder his ex-wife and she doesn't want the kid anyway do you yes I do I'm twice as old as you were when you're married Norman do you think that means anything anymore I hope it means that bill will only be half as much trouble you said we we have to get back to LA where is Bill exactly for sleep in the car last time I saw her oh I take it back there he is Oh wandering on this joy like a little vagabond he's so cute when he first wakes up he's you you you you didn't say he was here he's here you're not planning to welcome him on your hands and knees are you it might send an odd message no no no I don't intend to welcome him at all hello bill go away yo for God's sake lock the door well that might send an odd message - no I do not believe that on a man's first first meeting 30 years I was thinking about you this morning I was coming down kucik III Shores and I almost pulled into that little Cove where the big doc used to be somebody built a big ugly house in there now but I was remembering pulling in there on my uncle's boat the Mariah remember I get up on that deck and and all those crazy girls would come running down and my mailbag and I used to feel so important and swing that bag out on the dock and then I pick up the outgoing mail and somewhere in there I look for you and you'd always be standing in the back and all alone you'd smile at me and feel like I
