the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen brothers and sisters as children of our blessed mother we are gathered before her miraculous picture to honor her and to pray for all our needs unworthy children that we are let us first of all ask god's mercy and pardon merciful father you sent your divine son to redeem us by his death and resurrection and to give us new life by this you make us your children to love one another in christ how many times in the past we have forgotten this sublime dignity we have sinned against our brothers and sisters we have offended you merciful father forgive us repenting sincerely of our sins we ask your mercy may we always live as your truly devoted children mary immaculate start of the morning [Music] chosen [Music] [Applause] [Music] god you accepted the mysterious designs of his will we too have our crosses and trials sometimes they almost crush us to the ground dearest mother share with us your abundant faith and confidence in god make us aware that god never ceases to love us that he answers all our prayers in the way that is best for us strengthen our hearts to carry the cross in the footsteps of your divine son help us to realize that anyone who shares the cross of christ will certainly share his resurrection dearest mother as we worry about our own problems let us not forget the needs of others you always love others so much help us to do the same while praying for our own intentions and for the intentions of all here present at this novena we earnestly ask you our mother to help us comfort the sick and the dying give hope to the poor and unemployed heal the brokenhearted walk in solidarity with the oppressed teach justice to their oppressors and bring back to god all those who have offended him dearest mother help us to avoid sin which separates us from our heavenly father and from one another full of trust in you we place ourselves under the mantle of your maternal protection and confidently hope for your compassionate intercession amen prayer for the home mother of perpetual help we choose you as queen of our homes we ask you to bless all our families with your tender motherly love may the sacrament of marriage bind husbands and wives so closely together that they will always be faithful to each other and love one another as christ loves his church we ask you to bless all parents may they love and cherish the children whom god has entrusted to them may they always give them the example of a truly christian life help them to bring up their children in the love and fear of god bless bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests and ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage our approach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is your god then the lord was steered to concern for his land and to pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me be merciful o lord for we have sinned for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight be merciful o lord for we have sinned a clean heart great for me o god and a steadfast spirit bring you within me cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me be god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you [Music] behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god jesus christ [Music] [Music] your heart [Music] jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give ems do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you give ams do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your ans giving may be in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is he then will repay you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ welcome to the season of lent you know that it's lantern season because the liturgy is simple there's no singing of alleluia there's no singing of the gloria these two hymns are reserved until we celebrate easter and the color of the vestment during legend season is the color purple or violet as wednesday marks the beginning of the lanterns season the ash that is going to be sprinkled on your head later on it's a small sign subtle yet real and it is made clear to us that we came from dusk and to dust we shall return the book of job says naked i came from my mother's womb and naked i shall go back again we came into this world with nothing and we will go back empty-handed no matter how hard we were we will bring no treasure from this life ash wednesday is the start of lantern penitential season it lasts for 40 days and during this lantern season another formula which reminds us that it's a time of conversion when the priest or the minister says repent and believe in the gospel the question is why do we have to repent we have to repent because we have wandered off we have gone astray we distance ourselves from god and for lantern season it reminds us that this is a time for conversion this is a time to return to god because as what i've said we have wanted off conversion is the main direction that we have to do during this lantern season it's a turning away from sin which destroys god's love in us and it is also a time to return to god during these 40 days of lent the lord invites us to journey with him by doing these three things as what matthew says in today's gospel we fast fast is not just about abstaining from food but it's abstaining from what we really do not need we only focus on the essentials things that are not important things that are not essential we try to do away with them we challenge ourselves to practice self-denial we know that it's not easy to do that but i think in a way the pandemic is teaching us a lesson to live a life of simplicity we have a we were able to abstain from the luxuries that we used to do now with the pandemic we avoided that so it's a way when we fast we abstain from the things we do not really need the second thing that the lord invites us to do is practice and giving ams giving means being charitable we are aware that so many brothers and sisters of ours are suffering from poverty from hunger so for those of us who have plenty of resources and maybe plenty of surpluses this is the time that we have to be charitable to those who are in need the poor the needy the homeless who need our help during this time lent only asks us today reminds us today but all throughout our entire life god always calls us to be generous to be charitable to the poor and to needy the third thing that the lord invites us to do is pray pray always prayer means a dialogue with god to be childlike in front of jesus to express our dependence in him because he is our father we are his children we always dialogue talk to the father for we are always in need to be tried like to be dependent on god not to be independent but always to be in tune with god so these three things fasting and giving and prayer these things are we are asked to do to invest on these three things and we should do them without threatens or hypocrisy because the moment people are attracted to what we do then we are already been rewarded so without presence without hypocrisy we do fasting and giving and prayer and as what i've said we invest in these three things because they ensure they last forever they do not fade away these are the treasures that we have to invest for where your treasure is there will your heart be also [Music] transforming [Music] we shall receive [Music] god [Music] is [Music] she [Music] pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the unwell sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever a chapter amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our truth in our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intend on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow and your sons and tortures and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hoes and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim
