NFL Primetime: 1997 Week 5 (September 28th, 1997)

welcome to week five of NFL primetime can the pack truly find the key to getting back on track will it be Mary that unlocks the door to will win for the Lions the lemon Smith find the key to scoring his first touchdown the Bucs have found the key to being undefeated but is it in the cards while the Bears only team to have to keep for losing John Elway looks to be key and a win over Dan Reeves in the Falcon can beat the Jags with the poke hold and the Redskins game plan the Steelers key is for Cordell to open the door for a win against the oil they could just find a way to stay on their feet as the Saints just try to hold on [Music] welcome to week five of NFL fronting weren't the inspector I feel kind of alone on I'm Chris Berman along with Tom Jackson its Stuart Scott and I don't know that I would call it scintillating football but I wouldn't call it intriguing football in week five that's for sure first let's get you caught up on those late games around the NFL and there are five late games the Oakland Raiders spotted the Rams a little leave but they have it handily now 35:17 though there's a lot of time left in this game about 12 and a half minutes Napoleon coffin over a hundred yards rushing we'll have highlights later on the New York Football Giants they have won two in a row for the first time in three years they beat the Bengals on the road 31 to 14 as the Jets of 24 of those points in the first half good game going on at the Merve a little over two minutes to go the Chargers lead the Ravens 21 to 17 Tony Martin has three touchdowns in that game if I'm not mistaken all three for the Chargers we'll keep you posted in highlights later on Todd Peterson missed a 58 yard field goal at the gun the would have won it for the Seahawks understandable how he might miss it they're now in overtime at Arrowhead we will keep you posted Chiefs and Seahawks tied at 17 the Bears led this three nothing that's the good news in Chicago the bad news is they no longer lead it the Cowboys 27 to three over the Bears so it looks like Chicago barring a miracle would fall to oh and five there at the two-minute warning in big d the Jacksonville Jaguars have played three games they've won all three this year winning with three different quarterbacks and the latest being Mark Brunell to be played in the movies by Lee Majors as the Six Million Dollar Man the injury no problem comes back leave them to win on Monday night but they're playing the Washington Redskins who were one for one lifetime in their new digs and as we've known over the years in football time and time again just two times actually you can never tell what's gonna happen at that venerable Jack Kent Cooke Stadium yes for a first game ever in the rain Gus Farhat hold on to the ball Gus but hop on the bus Gus Don Davy with the hit Kelvin Wilson Pritchett doesn't wait for the midnight hour makes the recovery but they only get a field goal then Dave Thomas one of the Mackenzie brothers makes the pick of Baraat but with the Jags up 6 nothing again the Jags are deep and looking for a touchdown Brunell figures as to he switch sides and go early second quarter I've got a touchdown Jimmy Smith but no it's a flag on the play yeah great coverage by green right there hugs up on him at the goal line Smith gives them a nice shove and to nice as the official was looking on all the Redskins turnover problems continued even with the dependable albeit he's playing with a broken thumb Jerry Allen little dump pass from ferocity reality let him go getting the block over midfield there's the ball it's into this game at 1 & 2 looking up two games in the standings before Jacksonville played at the Jaguar say we can't fall any farther back well Pittsburgh of course had a short week but it was made a little bit longer by what certainly had to be a loud week for head coach Bill Cowher after that tough Monday night loss to the Jaguars hey George against the number two rush defense of the AFC and the Steelers showed him why Tom that's Joel steed then here's Greg Lloyd yeah right there the Pittsburgh Stephens do a great job of filling gaps they're not only past blitzes they are combination run blisters as well so George in the first half 11 rushes for 31 yards and Jerome Bettis against the number one runs defense in the AFC same result yet both of these run defenses have the ability to get upfield get the penetration hard to get the running game going against that kind of penetration but up neither running game effective with the bus kind of parked in neutral at 29 yards of the first half so be up for the passing game Kordell Stewart says that maybe not past let me run he's got the speed way into the end zone 7 nothing Steelers 10 of the Pittsburgh after the first quarter second there are owing to the Oilers six and two on the road last year they actually saw people in the stand they saw 57,000 today but not good enough and the Steelers that's their best performance by far the year 37 to 24 and the score is not indicative of the type of game they had and Kordell came out a little bit time but Kordell we see him doing what he can do he's running the ball so I'm getting and Tama we have not seen the Packers play a complete game all year well I think certainly almost every week now the world champions are happening having to deal with another problem it was the red zone up to this point now they're starting to put the ball in the end zone as of last week but I think that when you start looking at the problems no team can turn the ball over the way the Packers did today and expect to win and then you have the problem with the receivers once you begin to take the kind of shots that we saw them take today they're going to begin to peak and look for the defensive backs which means you're not going to be able to look for the ball and I still think they're a team Chris that's vulnerable to the run and against Barry Sanders obviously that's not a good thing no not good off that Tommy if we looked at the schedule in middle of August and we saw week six let's see Tampa Bay at Green Bay New England at Denver three of these teams will be undefeated which one won't that's right I don't think many of us would assemble the Packers obviously the team not undefeated in that group but they're three and two and the other one would be as we roll out
