the number seven slot tonight the Expos have been unable to win at night their own foreign knight ballgames and in day ball games their five and all this one I don't know what you call a day or night it's under the glass it's covered Stadium yeah at home it shouldn't matter Ralph you can't tell along with the 265 average Randolph with an on-base average of 359 and latinas goes right down the middle with a fastball Martinez basically a breaking ball pitcher he has one of the best curveballs in the game very fine control and he has been their ace pitcher for many many years outside target basketball was right back in on Randolph I'm not sure Martinez put that ball right where Fletcher wanted it but Willie couldn't catch up and he's in the hole Owen too Randolf of course for many years with the Yankees batted some leadoff batted some in the second slot this one is high and away off fastball so far from Martinez nice to have a veteran like this around who can fill many different roles for it has been a very good second place hitter and one move to the leadoff position and it started to play a little bit better the acquisition of dick Schofield batting second and another fastball Randolph is gone as Martinez blows one by him King upstarts dick Schofield locked to a good one with events in three ball games he's for 311 at the plate and the sitting 364 and mainstay for eight years in the California Angels infielder there is the first breaking point oh and two got a good look at a good curveball there he is basically as good a curveball pitcher in the league as say doc Gooden or someone along that line he really relies on the curveball is a very slow meticulously tight pitchers meticulous twerker ball five finally somebody makes semblance of contact now Martinez will really slow down when people get on base let me get an idea of his curveball here his first one that he's thrown and after establish that Kirby comes back to the fastball as you pointed out Bob laments finally made contact it went backwards but it was contact it's no balls two strikes to Scofield and he is a contact hitter who is tough to strike out Martinez only 24 wins and 22 losses the last two years Expos have not supported him very well in spite of Lydia and Ligonier on average last year two point three nine that's a very good ER a today he also had led the league in complete games of nine and he had five shutouts which led the league he is in inning eager he's averaged at least 215 the last four years [Applause] Randolph has struck out scope fields in the holo into with Bonilla on deck inside target and it comes way too far inside and how many times have we seen this around baseball in the first week and a half hitters leaning in fast balls running inside there have been a lot of hand injuries on hit batsman Oh Martinez has good control I doubt very much if he was trying to hit Scofield in that position is there is no reason for that all just kidding he weighs he comes back for the fastball it runs in on Scofield and gets him right above the elbow and that's painful but it isn't usually serious like hand is where you really wonder about whether or not it's going to be a broken bone or not as several have been already ears Bonilla and a fastball tails away from him in fact Martinez might have turned that one over a little bit to drop it down in a way he's got a very good changeup that makes him effective to left-handed hitters Bonilla off to the great start in st. Louis going 7 for 17 with both of his homers in all of his RBIs and then 1 for 10 against the Expos in that series at Shea runner going throw his high and Schofield is in safely [Applause] the limits have been using the stolen base with their offense here so far this year their 13th stolen base and 16 attempts and Scofield gets his first as he makes it down there in the high throw the catcher is Fletcher Aaron fetcher who plays a lot of first base it hasn't really had a lot of experience behind the plate men said do a lot of running on him only the Cardinals and Red's have stolen more bases than New York so far 101 to Bonilla this one is outside two balls and a strike so Bobby Bonilla against Expo pitching 1 for 10 in those 3 games at New York last weekend a little revenge on his mind right here early lead would be nice after the Expos took all three at Shea now whoa Bobby couldn't reach it two and two linear has been getting a lot of walks he has nine so far there's this year's second in the National League here he chases a way out of the strike zone his on-base average is seventh in the leg at 4:31 good donbass' percentage but you really like seeing him drive the ball rather than get those blocks even though he is hitting ahead of Johnson and Murray another good tailing fastball and bone is gone for the second out Dennis Martinez really running that fastball like crazy and here's a picture that was released by Baltimore he actually was down in the minor leagues when he was acquired by Montreal and making quite a comeback with the Montreal Expos went through a rehab program on alcohol he's one of five Nicaraguans to play in Major League Baseball in the first of course to make the major leagues and also be in an all-star game he's a two-time all-star pitcher and Howard Johnson with two outs our just hitting down in the 190 range struggling from the left side is the switch hitter and he ducks away from him fastball the was inside Johnson a 194 overall 200 left-handed nursing that left Achilles tendon that's just bothering him a little bit not serious enough to keep him out of action let's have a few of those nagging injuries bonitas got bruises on both of his feet and he's got a step back from that one leaned back the first time got out of there at that time and it's - and on Howard Johnson led the National League in home runs the second switching to do that in the National League rip Collins the first also led the league in runs better than last year and the first foot setter to lead the National League in runs batted in two balls no strikes first time Martinez has been behind anybody and Howard couldn't get that one up high two and one good news though from Pittsburgh early Phillies have a couple of early runs off of Doug Drabek Terry Mulholland throwing for the Phillies tonight we'll update the scoreboard for you later but the Phillies have at least two in the top of the first at three rivers Pittsburgh leaving the nationally leggies for the six and two record bets in the Cubs are three back tied for fifth that's the pitch you've got to lay off up Martinez has really been running that fastball away from left-handers and now it goes to three and one Expos have been a surprise they're five and four a game and a half back of the Pirates they had a nightmare last year against the National League East 28 wins in almost 90 ballgames breaking ball at the knees count goes full three and two pretty good idea what kind of a pitcher Martinez is with a count against him he comes back with his curveball and gets it in the strike so on a very good pitch and Johnson looking fastball has nothing else to do but take it Martinez in a position to strike out the side Scofield at second bass ball lifted left side out under it spike Owen and the Mets are gone in the top of the first inning the hit batter in the steel but they strand a man but a big inning cost him big time 15 innings of work he's been fairly hittable with an ER a of 3.60 as he looks to even his record against the Expos tonight and he'll be working against this lineup the line of dishes will lead off he'll be at second batting second and playing third base Brett Barberie batting third in left field LaVon Calderon dear Maddy forthright fielded Larry Walker batting fifth and playing first base Tim more like the 6-minute of the centerfielder marquise grissom nineteen seventh and catching Darren Darren Fletcher 8th batter the shortstop spike Owen and Dennis Martinez the pitcher batting ninth defensively the Mets have made seven errors in ten ball games so far the outfield from left to right Darrell Boston Howard Johnson Bobby Bonilla Dave Magadan Eddie Murray at the corners with Schofield and Randolph up the middle Charlie O'Brien third consecutive start Todd mentally has had the flu or Bryant in there again tonight to handle David Cone Expos are hitting 240 seventh best in the league they have got the speed game going white yet as well as they'd like to Marquis Grissom has done his part but the wino DeShields has not confirmed fast ball Anthony's in st. Louis DeShields led off with a leadoff home run in the ballgame fourth time he's done it in his major league career he is a attacker at the plate when strictly a fastball hitter not a guy who will walk his way on a whole lot and he can swing like that white take pitches and to right-center leadoff man aboard the Shields adds to his 385 on-base average and he is an obvious running threat Delino DeShields swiped 56 a year ago no cons fastball tailing away a bit but he still gets enough of it to pull it into right-center field for the base hit and the shields with four out of five stolen bases this year and 98 and his major league career is on here's Barberie struggling defensively but he's got a good bat back Tom Waddell is the montreal manager taking some heat now locally in the press after moving Wallach over to first base this guy has committed six errors in his eight games he's been out there but Tom muddles when asked that question after the ballgame Wednesday night snapped he is my third baseman and there is no timetable for him to improve hard to be taken out of the lineup only one is bad in the batting order and of course wallach is slowing down a bit although he did lead the third baseman in the National League in fielding percentage last year the first time in his career in spite of the fact he's won Gold Glove three of them and David Cone will throw over to first base last year he made 408 pickoff attempts and led the National League picked out for me too but two runners and 27 had stolen bases against it but he'll throw over there again and again and again 408 that's almost four ballgames in pitching the first base right to retire two guys you might be better off from an odd standpoint of getting double play balls at fastball missed Charlie O'Brien thought it was a strike he kind of turns and talks to Randy Marsh about that one two balls no strikes catchers and pitchers always looking early in the ballgame for the umpire to establish the strike zone that hopefully will stay the same throughout the evening it was a great pitcher named Sam sad Sam Jones who never threw the first base history was they they were always looking for over but low three and Oh picked off his first baseman he wasn't ready David Cohen may have picked himself off a little bit here he's been preoccupied with the runner now he's in a big hole with some good hitters coming up at one to the outside corner three and one expos have speed up at the top with DeShields Barbary to follow know it's interesting robbery the third baseman you mentioned that he's openly the sixth third baseman that Montreal has had in their history that he started back in 1969 in the Mint's have had 90 any different people played third base since they started three one pitch one is going pitches Paul four anyway base hit and the walk in the Expos with Calderon coming up have big getting potential here in the very first frame this is the way the Mets have been playing so far this year their pitchers have been behind the count their earned run average five point one six the worst in the National League and they're pretty staff was supposed to be the best in the National League by far and if you have an outstanding defensive catcher like Charlie O'Brien behind the plate you'd like to at least give him a chance to go after the runner never had the opportunity called her own stepping in big breaking ball and no contact both runners will move up it simply got away from Charlie O'Brien I think Randy Marsh the umpire might have thought that ball was tipped he was trying to get out of the way kind of unusual for O'Brien would miss a pitch like this it is a breaking ball bionic leg he was crossed up it probably should go as a passed ball wasn't in the dirt and now two runners in scoring position with no one out at the breaking ball and those swings has dated a new obviously the DoublePlay opportunity is gone first inning infield is not in and he got him on a pitch on the fists short Center Howard Johnson charging runner is coming and then stopping they've got to play at third and DeShields is just back in he came about 40 feet down the line Eddie Murray cut the ball off and they had a shot at him for a moment looks like these heels might have a problem with a hamstring the way he's there may seem there as you see bluff up the center Johnson to the third almost in time would not and a runner still at second and third but one man out and you touched on the key Rao Howard Johnson threw a bullet to Eddie Murray here's Larry Walker [Applause] I went away with the fastball Walker they feel a budding star here in Montreal heat in power very dangerous hitter and he came on very strong in the last half of last season shouldn't get bunched to hit here with first base open and a right-hand batter coming up even though it's early in the ballgame you got to really be careful in these spots when he got a hitter like Larry Walker he's got a seven game hitting streak thirty two extra-base hits 41 RBIs in his final 71 games 1991 when he hit 338 over the second half of the season and a year ago he was having trouble getting playing time early in the season they still had Dave Martinez here never platoon any minute last year that still young guy raises betting average 49 points last year the largest by any rookie 2-1 pitch is outside ball three Walker will be 26 years old until the first day of December mikage out there taking a look at the Mets defense Mel stottlemyre pacing because of the pitching situation expose have an opportunity here in the bottom of the first and now the bases are loaded I'll go I'm not taking any chances with the cleanup hitter and he has a little bit more of an advantage against him warlike the right-hand batter Wallach with the offseason last year also not doing too well so far this year last year he hit to 25 you're watching Mets baseball 92 on Channel 9 W wor-tv C caucus New Jersey with Ralph Kiner Bob carpenter bottom of the first inning double play back in order if cone can get the Wallach ground ball breaking ball appeared to be Bell hi oh that's a tough call right there I don't know where the strike zone is if that's ball one that ball appeared to be down the middle bailed hi to wallet that looked like the same pitch 1 & 1 the count let's check out those two pitches it was the first one and it's called a ball and I don't know where that is that's got to be a strike and he comes back again with this pitch a little bit more away but certainly about the same after those breaking balls Cohn missed and it's 2 & 1 the only thing I can think of is that he might have been fooled by that breaking ball the umpire that is and maybe call that first one a little high Ralph but that's a low strike zone if that's a high pitch basketball one in on the right-hander and Wallach follows it upstairs to it to Tim Wallach career lows in a lot of categories last year in 225 13 homers 73 RBIs has not homered yet in the first nine games of this year his average dropped 71 points last year the second largest drop in the major leagues George Brett's average dropped 74 points for the largest drop breaking ball could be to random turns it and they go six four three two in the inning so : pitches around the two walks as Scofield Randolph and Murray got it turned and it's scoreless after one at the big o in Montreal now here's a word from infinity the big hit or even a sack glide that he wanted and the DoublePlay ball takes his club out of that first inning it's his birthday today 237 years of age there's Jeff Torborg with his starting catcher Charlie O'Brien alongside and the big DoublePlay ball kept the game scoreless as this one goes to the top of the second Eddie Murray to be followed by Dave Magadan and Darryl Boston Murray second on the all-time list for home runs by a switch-hitter 398 Mickey Mantle with 536 the old-time lady and he won't catch the mick but he's in a good position for 400 still looking for his first homer of the year after hitting a one hopper to DeShields and Eddie becomes the third consecutive victim of Dennis Martinez after Martinez hit dick Schofield with that pitch with one out in the first inning Dave Magadan struggling at two for 18 so far he was old for 14 before he got his first hit this year and that was in the last game when he had two hits and four advance still a 292 career average you know this guy's going to hit he's always been a line drive machine whether 3:28 1990 third in the National League that year it was that fastball outside in low and Martinez behind Magadan two balls no strikes meds had never had a batter that played his career with the Mets had hit over 300 Keith Hernandez the highest batting average in the career as a mint while playing for the Mets 297 [Music] [Music] two balls and a strike they play maggot in straight up on the infield an around to the left a bit in the outfield so that indicates Martinez will be working him away that's where he hits it but it's up the middle Magadan good job Ralph he did not try to pull that outside pitch and he took it right back from where it came hard part for Magadan is to pull the ball he's an opposite field hitter and this was right to his lucky ball away from him a fastball and he hits it right through the middle era Boston is next for the Mets he talked to Ralph about how the Mets haven't had that 300 hitter Expos have not had a 20 game winner in a while Ross Grimsley back in 78 there are the others the Expos have the fifth longest drought in baseball does that mean Royce Schilling Grimsley will be joining those other three in the Hall of Fame some day I don't think so no I don't think so and one seller Ryan will be that's interesting though the three ball club's most recent 20 game winners two of them are retired and in the Hall of Fame and one maybe a year or two away from retirement and then just the five years and he'll be in there as well Darryl's numbers he's hitting in the number seven slot tonight oh and one the count Magadan not a big running threat but with Wallach holding Darryl Boston has hitting room on the right side if he can pull the baseball Magadan set free stolen bases in his last two years we'll throw over there about eight times short lead now how many times with David Cone throw over there with Magdalene first a few basketball inside a ball and a strike to Boston average ball game is slowed down a word somewhere around three hours and a lot of it is due to the fact that pitchers throw over to first base a lot of course some of its due to the fact that you do have more commercials because of TV but pitches worked so much differently today hitters like to walk around a lot more than they used to that's the umpires pop what are going it's grounded up the middle at second still turn the four six three Mets are gone this one stays scoreless middle of the second innings and now a word from bud tries prohibitive any commercial or other use of the program such as by charging admission for it showing is like wine is prohibited bottom of the second inning underway marquise grissom another Montreal birthday boy 25 years old today stepping it with a breaking ball and the fastball each of them out of the strike zone two known to this guy who can fly the major leagues in stolen bases last year was 76 probably would not have won that title had Otis Nixon state eligible or Vince Coleman not getting hurt Coleman was leading the league when he went down and oldest got into the substance abuse situation popped up right-center Howard Johnson Bobby Bonilla center fielder as he should when there's a 50/50 situation calls the ball one out so cone settling down a bit got the DoublePlay ball last inning gets the leadoff man here which he did not do first time around and he'll face Deere and Fletcher once you're bounced around a little for last couple years left-hand hitter waiting Fletcher's Noah the Dodgers the Phillies and now a chance to be an everyday catcher with the Expos and he's done well so far he went to a couple of the best during the winter for some hitting instruction went to Tampa paid $600 to spend a week with the expose hitting instructor Jay Ward and a guy named Wade box who were running a baseball camp there six hundred bucks for the week and he bought himself for four hundred average for the first ten days of the regular season it's not guaranteed though cash in advance right in the air left center arrow Boston over to get it to down Ross who's starting five of the last six coming into this one Vince Coleman on the shelf Cohen has thrown a couple of fly balls here in the second inning and he'd like to go right after the number eight man here spike Owen and have the pitcher lead off in the third [Applause] my growing a career batting average at 298 against the math sake just don't know how to get him out lifetime average is 241 spike wilt celebrated birthday in a couple days he'll be 31 years old on Sunday here one of the shortstops rumored that would be picked up by the Mets at one time and they ended up getting a guy who's two years younger Owen about to be 31 Schofield is 29 sort of similar players both have great hands they catch the ball when they get Scofield has a little more rain since pike although spike has led the league in fielding two of the last three years last year the shortstop Ozzie Smith beat him out spike Owen is a switch-hitter whereas Scofield hits only from the right side Cowan dropped one down pretty well and Spike was reaching all over the place just to make contact two balls two strikes but they're both contact hitters who can be very pesky in that number eight spot while those Schofield is hitting up at number two for the Mets right now bases empty two outs and the breaking ball stays high you don't want to walk this guy and give the number nine man a chance to get up there he liked that pitcher the laid off the next inning it's one of the nuances of baseball in the National League and this guy's not liable to hit it out of the park if he's going to get on make him hit the ball [Applause] 3 2 pitch he challenged him with a high fastball in de left field and cone starting to overpower people a bit because he threw three fly balls to the outfield in that inning all of them easy chances after two no score in Montreal here's a word from mobile here in Montreal Charlie O'Brien will lead off for the Mets the number eight hitter followed by David Cone and Willie Randolph each team with a hit Expos have stranded a couple and Charlie O'Brien benefiting from the playing time now Todd Huntley has been battling the flu feels better but Jeff Torborg a little reluctant to change things because the last couple days have been wins with Charlie behind the plate and he's been swinging the bat pretty well there's his new stance he's facing the pitcher much more than he used to that was a stance a lot about is used back in the 30s late 30s open stance mainly brought about by Archie Vaughn one of the great hitting shortstops of all time in the Hall of Fame who had an open stance the theory being you see the ball with both eyes charlie talking about that before the game tonight as he goes three-and-oh in the count so that's the key Tom McGraw worked with him a lot during the spring one of the problems is the fact that when you open up like that you open your shoulders have you got to keep your shoulders closed or get them closed after you start with him open and you folks might remember the Sunday afternoon game at Shea when the Yankees came in Charlie O'Brien came into that ballgame and in the 8th inning had an RBI double down the left-field line he said that was the Advanta mo ver the hump that got him feeling comfortable at the plate after a spring in which he didn't get that many of bats Tomahawks it on a bounce over the dugout count goes full three and two that's a pretty good reason why when you hit with an open stance that you have to get close though he did not get close there and he pulled the ball foul his three hits have all been doubles there he opens up too soon and pulls the ball foul and it's easier to open up too soon against a guy like Martinez who's got a lot of trick pitches and can change speeds on you he can have you way out ahead fastball away and O'Brien manages to pull that one far [Music] the more close you are with your stance in other words your front foot in front of your back foot the faster you have to be because you have to get your hips open even though you keep your shoulders posed and more your hips are closed the more difficult is to get them into that position where they're almost facing the pitcher he pulls this one and this might be another double down into the left-field corner O'Brien Dix for to Calderon Dixit out and the Mets have their leadoff man aboard for the first time Charlie O'Brien Hunt tough on three and two and that he got one inside the bag well four hits this year they've all been two base hits better stay with that stance right down the line and an easy to base it puts corner in a position to sacrifice here and get the runner over to third going of course a well-recognized good hitting pitcher right he is the only pitcher on the Mets in their history to have a base hit as a pinch hitter see where he pushes the bunt he's looking toward the left side he would like Brett Barbary to field this ball so that it would not be possible for the Expos to have third base covered my confidence flashing signs dual Brian on its second cone over five on the year he'd be very happy to go to back to the dugout with that same batting work and a sacrifice here in the top of the third inning dan Wallach right on top guarding against that bun as the first baseman you could solve that problem by making the third baseman field and he took it offered at it a bit then pulled the bat back the ball was in the strike zone oh and to you see Congo in the bunting position didn't really offer at it it's called a strike it's a perfect pitch to bunt basket ball that didn't have a whole lot of run on it and we'll see what he does on Owen - he's a good enough hitter to swing away he does and breaking ball strikes him out [Applause] unable to sacrifice of course if you want the ball foul with two strikes you're out and he gets a breaking ball there and doesn't get a piece of it that might be a tougher pitch to bunt fair than it would be to swing fair because if you bunt it you might hit yourself in the leg with it and so Willie Randolph without runners still out at second base will come up for the second time tonight Willie struck out leading off the ballgame and he got all fast balls when he batted that first time and see what happens here I don't think you'll see that same pattern he didn't make any contact yeah Willie's up there thinking geez I haven't seen his breaking ball yet it's one of the best in baseball target away there's the breaking ball in the dirt and that's as good as the sacrifice Nets get a break on the wild pitch O'Brien to third base with one out now the Mets can score on and out and this is the curveball first one that Martinez has thrown Willie Randolph and it bounces away from Fletcher so the Montreal Expos are going to play their infield in here and this is unusual asserting the ballgame you saw Jeff Torborg in the first inning not bring his infielders in with runners at second and third nobody out funny Ralph that that pattern of fast balls nothing but to Willy first time up may have set up that wild pitch because he wanted to give him a breaking ball in the first pitch that this at-bat put it in the dirt and the runner advanced there's a fastball for a strike miss Martinez 36 years of age 1990 he was the oldest player on the all-star squad but Baltimore rookie he was 16 seasons ago back in 76 one wonder Randolph and well inside ball two Willie had a good home stand he was 8 for 24 with a home run and an RBI and his first met Homer five days ago against the Expos in a losing cause an RBI here can put his team on top and it hit the dirt and then Willy's Lake strike two takes a lot of confidence for a pitcher to throw moving them pitches into the dirt after that wild pitcher and I have a lot of confidence in your catcher with that runner at third base well you don't run 178 games in your without some confidence you you have a pattern of pitching and he is basically the type of pitcher will throw some balls in the dirt because of a terrible outside target fastball outside three and two he was trying to start that fastball outside haven't run back across the corner Willie did not bite and the count goes full with the runner at third and one out he'll throw a curve ball on a 3-2 count so he can't say it's going to be a fast infield in and the dirt it goes ball four and Randolph goes down the first base nets have runners at the corners with one out and dick Schofield coming up and s Martinez we mentioned 1976 there he is over the last six years under than eight wins in the American League 69 since coming over here and when he gets run support look at that er a down through the years except for 86 it's been very good this guy gets run support he's outstanding since the opening game of 1989 when Dennis Martinez gets four runs a game to work with he has won 29 games and lost two he could have sued his teammates for lack of support last year there's a big breaking ball like one two Scofield you might remember Martinez was ahead of him in the count first time up and then ran a fastball in on dick and got him on the upper left arm infield back looking for two or when in deshields up the middle a lot of things can happen here you've got a good contact man at the plate Charlie O'Brien at third a big man on deck and a guy at first who can still run some Lily Randolph has a foot on the carpet in Martinez throws over a lot of hitting room over there because DeShields is cheating toward the bag for the double play where do you see how far up toward the middle he is a good 80 feet of room through that right side Randolf holding oh that one is up around his helmet high enough that it wasn't that tough for Scofield that get down and out of the way count goes to a ball and a strike runners at first and third with one out top of the third in a scoreless game a lot of pitchers won't bother to clear the first after that fake the third I'd indicate that as Martinez wasn't ready to look to the hitter yet O'Brien got the inning started with a double down the left-field line stayed at second his cone struck out and Randolph up there Charlie advanced in a wild pitch and then Willie walked breaking ball Schofield thought about it he saw that breaking ball hanging up there but it was too far inside he laid off stays in pretty good hitting position right here and besides they better take that pitch that falls out over the plate that's a sacrifice fly at least last ball base hit left field O'Brien into score Randolph stops its second and the Mets take the lead on Scofield's first RBI way to go says Tom Macross go peel hit the ball hard after being hit by a pitch his first time up Schofield ducks under a fastball that was right up around his head and now hangs in there on this fastball here and hits a very hard into left-center field to put the Mets up Mets have not lost the ballgame this year when they have scored the first run of the game so they have scored the first run here and they have won four and a chance for more with Bonilla Bobby Bonilla thinking right now how can he keep throwing perfect fast balls - he's truck out in the first inning on nothing but fast balls tailing away and now strike one on an identical pitch now a breaking ball low and inside that's a big inning potential here on the top of the third still only one out two men aboard and the big guys about to see action Bonilla followed by Howard Johnson and Eddie Murray target away bonia went down a fallen one ball two strikes bonia Oh for New York in terms of RBIs after getting all seven of them in st. Louis now that the ball clubs back on the road maybe he'll knock in a couple more Roman 100 last year for Pittsburgh hitting 302 with 18 home runs inside target and the fastball zips right by his hip so Martinez after running the fastball away from Bonilla God was riding on him this time around the thighs and that's the way you get away from a you have to turn away from the pitcher most of your hitters today dive into the ball and that's why so many hitters are getting hit by pitches that's a good point Ralph a lot of guys I've talked to around baseball feel that the umpires protecting the hitters so much in recent years hitters haven't learned how to get out of the way anymore that one is inside as well the count goes full there again you see banana turn away from the pitcher and that's the way to get out of the way you should really learn that when you are very small because they can save you a lot of bruises but if you're in the back yard do it with a wiffle ball maybe maybe a rubber ball three two count the runners are holding as ball four loads the bases second walk of the inning third consecutive met to reach bases Bonilla once again let's look at the way that you should try to get out of the way of a ball that's at you and you turn away from the pitcher and that at worst puts your back to the ball and if you get hit it doesn't hit you somewhere where it really is a lasting field as you can see from that replay completely took the hands out of the play hands were completely obscured from our camera and thus from the baseball as well dick spot for Howard Johnson Howard with five RBIs and three men out there with one out Martinez off the stretch [Applause] and time was asked and given by home plate umpire Randy Marsh Willie Randolph walked he's over at third Schofield the big hit at the inning the RBI single he went to second on the walk to Bobby Bonilla our Johnson popped up to short first time up and the breaking ball at the letters let's big RBI man of a year ago [Applause] now it had a hundred and seventeen of them and hitting 38 home runs also knock did a lot of runs in spring training and five so far and the fastball nowhere near Howard with six grand slam home runs in his major league career five of them have been with the Mets behind him Eddie Murray who's had 15 grand Slammers what Martinez really needs is the double playground ball 1 1 pitch coming breaking ball up and Howard went up to get it and he'll pop out too short for the second time hitter's eyes will light up when they see that high breaking ball but that one was so high Howard couldn't drive it anywhere well this pits out of the strike zone Howard goes for it he's looking for something he can hit in the air but this one breaks in on the trademark and he pops it up for an infield fly he's automatically out and here's Eddie Murray there's a great fastball it was a strike but it also appeared to be unhittable as it was tailing away wickedly well you saw the good accent on that fastball and when you're a good hitter you can take those pitches because they're very very difficult to hit you look for something better if they have that good confidence go down to two strikes this one a little further outside a ball and a strike any Marie's still looking for that first home run of the year he has six RBIs Grand Slam specialists throughout his career as Ralph mentioned he's got a chance to bust it open here at the top of the third outside target again fastball again ball two we're gearing the all-time waitering grand slam home runs with 23 we mentioned that Teddy Murray has 15 in his major league career most of them coming early in his career platon a good home run ball park for a switch-hitter if you could pull the ball in Baltimore it's only 309 it wasn't lease at the old ballpark down the lines at one upstairs ball three in Martinez within a pitch of walking home a second run he's been struggling with his control he hasn't walked but - he said about it he hasn't really been in command of his pitches Randolf looking into Eddie Murray has if to say hey stay within yourself make him come to you here off the full wind-up and Murray hits a fair ball inside the bag that will score at least two Bonilla heading for third cup pitch will send him he will score without a play and it's for nothing New York Randolph Scofield and Bonilla scoring a little Q shot by Eddie Murray perfectly placed down the left-field line Eddie Murray now with his fifth double they've all come in his last three ball game and he gets three big runs batted in that will hit but certainly in the right place and it goes down into the area in left field were hollering has some difficulty picking it up and that gives but he had a chance to score from first base and Randolph Schofield NVIDIA and that ball was hit so slowly coverage would have sent Bonilla anyway but when it was fumbled by Calderon then there was not even a throw so on four hits the Mets lead for nothing three of those hits in this inning both men who walked have scored and Dave Magadan is the eighth man to bat here in the third he singled up the middle his first time up and a wicked breaking ball is grabbed on a nice play by Darren Fletcher Magadan got a fastball away and took it up the middle for the Mets first base hit last inning [Applause] all the scoring in this inning a ball and a strike to the met third baseman there's a good fastball under his hands at the knees Magadan good contact man up there liable have put it in play even went behind in the count inside target and he pulls it right at sim wallet expose out of the inning but the Mets get three runs so rather four runs on three hits a couple of walks helped out and so did a wild pitch middle of the third for nothing New York and here's a word from your tri-state lincoln-mercury dealers expose at runners at second and third and nobody out cone got the short fly ball then the DoublePlay ball after a walk to load the bases and you waste opportunities like that early you pay later you have to think advantage of what you are given and then they were in a great spot at that Devil play ball and Tim Wallick get into the thirty point at this point and David Cone of course one of those pitchers Martinez's like that all the good ones are that if you don't take advantage of that early opportunity it might be the last such chance you have in the ballgame Martinez a 131 career hitter over five and you might remember last inning phone starting to pick up the pace a little through pitches that resulted in three easy fly balls including to the number eight man spike Owen who had a full count Cohen got him so he could get the pitcher to leadoff in this inning and then strike out on a lone away breaking ball only the first strikeout for David Cone tonight we'll take a look at the Macy's national league scoreboard Trey Beck for Pittsburgh but the Phillies got a couple in the first inning everything else starting later Cubs are at st. Louis with Maddux and de Lyonne and throwing the San Diego Houston is Hurst and Harnish Rijo and downs as the Reds play later and it'll be Glavine and Martinez as the Braves play at LA it's a night in the National League when a lot of staff aces are on the mouth Martinez here Cohen of course one of the Mets aces got Drabek throwing de Lyonne Glavine Martinez Rijo ground ball right side from DeShields and it's under and all that she owes will easily reach second base [Applause] Oh Murray comes off the bag and you wonder whether or not he locked the view of Willie Randolph Randolph can't get over there and he goes on through and it is scored as a base hit that'll be in the double off the glove of Randolph Willie had a long way to go would have been a tough turn and throw to the pitcher for him had he gloved the ball cleanly now Brett Barbary the hitter the shields have two for two with that double ball upstairs [Applause] this way the dirt over to third easily DeShields [Applause] by David Cone David second wild pitch of the season a lot of balls into the dirt any office split-finger fastball that was a fastball right there as per finger and our runner at third with one barbering a pretty good contact man you like their chances to score here he's a line drive hitter good breaking ball by David Cone makes the count two balls in the strike this guy in 57 games as a rookie last year hit 353 to make a big impression on Tom Reynolds Charlie O'Brien blocks the fast ball in the dirt [Music] there were a few boos when he was announced as the hitter next May Expo fans know all about stopping pucks and stopping baseballs when you can't stop the ball they boo it's like a bad goaltender he's made six air is already a third base and that's what they're brewing about Mel stottlemyre saw David Cone get the DoublePlay ball worked through an easy second and get the first man here and then the ground ball that deflected into the outfield for a double the wild pitch and he needs the strikeout here does David Cone and he almost got it but the breaking ball was a little bit low and that's his third walk [Applause] calling that ball a ball and David Cone very unhappy with that phone let's have a look at the Toyota American League scoreboard not many runs in the league early tonight Milwaukee has 5 early ones middle innings as they entertained the Mariners Minnesota on top of Chicago 3 nothing call the American League action in the Eastern or central time zone tonight so we'll have some finals for them later on good breaking ball to call their own who's a good RBI man he drove in 75 last year and did hit three hitter with 19 home runs that was close the best pitching matchup in the American League tonight is at Fenway where David wells throws for Toronto against Roger Clemens one and one for the Red Sox no balls one strike father owned saw breaking ball up and he was all over again the Mets could use the DoublePlay ball in a bases-loaded situation one out in the first bone got Wallach to bounce into a 6-4-3 on all into the fastball rides inside [Music] lightning-quick at third that Barberie Goodspeed at first we'll see what he follows that pitch up with now ralph think breaking ball but he comes inside for the fastball it'll be hit too slow to get to the run scores as DeShields comes home to make it a 4-1 game [Applause] well he throws a good fastball right here in James Colorado unfortunately for the Mets he hits it so softly there's no possible chance for the DoublePlay in fact they can't even get the lead out at second base as the run comes in the score so DeShields has scored the first run for Montreal now here's where Cohn needs to get tough and take care of the Expos in this inning Larry Walker drives on the 1 then you've given away half of what your team got you in the top of the breaking ball you know what that looked like a strike but it crossed up Charlie O'Brien and he may have shielded Randy Marsh from the call I think you're right Bobby came up to catch that ball he was crossed up on the pitch he's looking fastball I watch him rise up it's looked like it was in the strike zone McGinn he's not any Marsh is not giving that breaking ball to David Coleman Phillies have added a run at Pittsburgh John Kruk is triple home a run is now 3-1 Phil's over the Pirates top of the fifth well hit but right at Willie Randolph so Cohen will get out of it with one run scored a double a wild pitch and a walk they strand a runner they've left three after the early innings the Mets on top for one here at the Big O and here's a word from your tri-state by play here's Ralph okay Bob thank you very much and it'll be Darryl Boston the lead it off Boston grounded into a double play even though it was a hit-and-run play his first time up Boston with a home run this year and he goes after the first pitch is strike one Dennis Martinez has given up four ones they all came in a third and the Mets have had four base hits it'll be Boston O'Brien and Cohen as the first three batters for the Mets here in the top of the fourth inning even though it was a hit-and-run play his first time up Boston with a home run this year and he goes after the first pitch is strike one Dennis Martinez has given up four runs they all came in the third and the Mets have had four base hits it'll be Boston O'Brien and Cohen as the first three batters for the Mets here in the top of the fourth inning and there's a strike for strike two Montreal so far this year drying very well bilingual City here in Montreal and as a matter of fact and that's a ball it's one and two they really prefer to speak nothing but French here and all the traffic signs and signs of roundabouts are in French they were one time in English and this ball hit out the left center field it's a long run for Calderon but he's there and he makes the catch Bob you've traveled a lot you've been around this country then in Canada in Mexico you've been everywhere today is the first time in my life I've ever seen a traffic sign that had a question mark in it how can you explain that one to me a question mark in a traffic sign I've seen a lot of drivers with question marks a lot of cab driver we came around this curve and all this side was a big question mark now what does that mean well I couldn't decide which way to tell you to go I guess one away and the batter coming up is Charlie O'Brien the devil his first time up and later on scored O'Brien now a four hits and has doubled for every one of them in this pitch fouled into the sand I think we have your answer one of our astute stage guys here tells me that that is the symbol for the information center is that what it is it must have been located right there I thought we were in deep trouble when you look at the time by the question mark one strike the cat and the pitch back is hit hard down the line again this time backhanded by Maria's throw to first base is rock by Wallach at first and we'll see whether or not that will be an air Bryan could get a hit because he might have been able to beat the play let's see how they scored now how ironic is this play the kid over at third makes a good stab after committing six errors in eight ball games and the guy that he replaces after this very good play drops the throw and it's an error on Tim Wallach so even when Barbary does something good defensively it does not earn an out for the Expos and now David Cone the batter and again he's in a bunting situation in the first pitch ball one wallet gets charged with the air his third air while playing third so they have weakened two positions by moving Wallach from third diversity three errors at first base asserted in the year is very very high and this one is butted but it's bunted foul it's one in one cone unable to sacrifice his first time up for the runner at second base at no one out now on the body situation here again going checking out the signs Wallach had to go back in that was not a difficult play the ball was well off the ground it's not like he was picking a short hop he just simply dropped it O'Brien the runner at first base on the air and it's a 1-1 count the David Cone that's lady in 41 they might hit Montreal 42 [Applause] that's the 1 1 pitch and Cohen fails the bun again then it's 1 & 2 though I'm having difficulty trying to sacrifice for the second time checks out the third base goes to see whether or not he will attempt a bun again or a swing away first of three with a montreal expos here in they go Montreal still looking for the bunt those squares and bunts it foul he's out so for the second time called unable to sacrifice it goes as a strikeout running fastball and Damon would just over the top of it four strikeouts by Martinez two of them on the opposing pitcher so - Vinod and Willie Randolph will be the batter Dennis Martinez tonight and three and two thirds innings has given up four runs on four hits he has struck out four walk to and hit the batter all the runs for the Mets have been earned in breaking ball for a called strike Randolph has struck out and walked he also has scored the Mets sending eight men to the plate in the third to score their four runs leaving four to one Bryan a runner at first base and the pitch back and strike strike two Montreal with a record of five and four and laments with a record of four and six and losing three of those six games to Montreal at Shea Stadium last year the Mets won 14 of the 18 games between these two clubs and they lost or they won here in the Big O and a breaking ball for ball 1 and 2 they played only 7 games here in the Big O because it was condemned at the end of the season in the Mets way to extra games with Montreal at Shea Stadium unable to come in here and play the remaining 2 games with montreal montreal played 26 out their games on the road their last 26 out of 28 days and a ground ball to third Barbary there and the out is made and that retires the side so the air and one left and the score at the end of three and a half innings the Mets for Montreal 1 and here's a word from nobody beats the Wiz and it will be tim wallach to lead it off for the expose wall a crown into a double play to end the first inning when the Expos returned away by David Cone and the first pitch to Wallach ball one my link with 195 home runs a veteran third baseman who has never been on the DL now playing first base and unhappy about being moved to first base after some brigadiers a third and the fastball fouled off one ball and one strike asked first portrayed in spring training because of his unhappiness expose though Dan Duquette general manager Tom Runnels manager reluctant to let this veteran go they need guys like this around with all the young players guys this one up the alley it'll be extra bases involved violent he pulls in the second with his sixth to base head of the year he leads the National League of that department [Music] there's the history of the Expos at the hot corner expansion team in 69 coca-cola boy 2 years Bob Bailey then only one year for Ron hunt a guy known for getting hit by pitches in his career then Larry parish really settled things down until Wallach took over for him and Barberie this year the big question is will that barberry 1992 have a - and then another year long down the road after it or will this be a short-term thing here and the better marquise grissom takes the first pitch for a call strike rhythm flied to Center his first time up and the fastball a ball one-on-one you know Ralph you were talking about the bilingual influence up here even at old Gerry park they couldn't think of a French way to say Kokkola boy our boots day came out the same both ways I used to go crazy with that inter decks and the coca-cola boy they loved it in archery and by the first base umpire Dana DeMuth snappy breaking ball it couldn't have been a called strike so it had to be called a swing on the appeal down to the data and that helps Cohen because he gets his man in the hole 1 & 2 and Tom Runnels is really upset about and with these dugouts you can get right out to the umpire as wells is gone on his birthday gets thrown out of the ballgame and it's a toe-to-toe Harry wendelstedt comes over to try to settle things down one thing you can't do in baseball's aren't you a strike Reynolds arguing in from the dugout and then coming out of the field and that was his undoing [Applause] so Wendell's dead now trying to calm him down but Reynolds out of the ballgame thrown out by Dana DeMuth it's no way to treat somebody on her birthday those two were nose to nose during that confrontation Ronald's not ready to leave yet you know adding a little fuel to the fire with this situation here is this new configuration of Olympic Stadium when they moved the whole plate the entire field back about 40 feet toward the backstop last year and cut out the stands a little bit and brought the dugouts so close to play and when Tom Reynolds was down at the first base end of the dugout now there you can see it on the third base side you go down to the end of the dugout you probably about 25 or 30 feet from the base umpire and Runnels was right down in that far corner of the dugout at the end of the railing there and he could give it in big fashion to Dana DeMuth and it didn't take long for him to get run out of here will they have to clean up the debris here and let's take a look at what took place what preceded the ejection this is a breaking ball that'll end up outside did he swing the mat appeared to be over home plate when Grissom stopped it but Dana DeMuth said the bat was through the hitting zone and then there's Runnels going down toward that end of the dugout and within about 10 yards of the umpire [Applause] here stay in the dugout stay in the dugout Jeff but worry about that one mr. Torborg so the can two balls and two strikes from running second no one at marquise grissom the batter and this is a breaking ball for ball three and it's a cold Camp David Cone needs to take advantage of what appeared to be a bit of a break on that one and to call with nobody out runner in scoring position and get this hitter out [Applause] and he goes to the curveball and it's ball four so grism been in this stump ends up getting the walk he had been old 411 and is now on the join wall I could second and runners at first and second that brings the time run to the plate and Darren Fletcher is the batter Goins fourth phones fourth walk in his game and David of course has been criticized in the past for trying to be too fine at times he did not have a power hitter up there and he decided not to challenge him tried to bite the corner with the breaking ball and thus the walk and Fletcher takes the first pitch for a called strike Fletcher flied out to left field his first time up came into this game hitting 400 [Applause] six hits and 15 advanced and he hits this ball in the air to centerfield short flyball to Center runner at second Wallach not tagging up and Johnson makes the catch and gets the ball back in so one away runners still at first in second and that'll bring up spike on Doug Simon's sawing in the bullpen for Montreal's they worked down to the pitchers position in the batting order the Palmer Mets left-hander who was with the Mets all last season Expos have pretty good balance down there they've got Simon's and Jeff visera from the left side bill Sammon the former pirate bill Landrum who should be an outstanding setup man here who could also close out some games and then hard throwing John wetland who came from LA via Cincinnati and the first pitch to spike Owen is in the dirt a fastball for ball one on flat out the left his first time up Expos had a bullpen nightmare last year they took Barry Jones from the White Sox who was a setup man for Bobby Thigpen tried to make him a closer and the year was a disaster from start to finish and the breakdown of their bullpen certainly led to that of all to know well if you have a ballclub that's got a lot of young players and you're going to rely on speed defense and pitching you're not going to blow many people out you better have somebody who can close out ballgames they feel this year they do to know they can and the pitch he called strike in that one high as far as by going his control [Applause] five innings for Chrome three hits one run four walks 1k [Applause] he came in with 20 walks and only her other 20 strikeouts and only four walks then again he misses and it's three and one [Music] fidgeter is the on deck batter but as we pointed out you saw which are throwing in the bullpen so they're in position to go to a pinch-hitter as they trailed by three wallak in grissom the runners and the pitch is grounded right back that go and it should be a double play there's one and the other end for the second time in this game a big double play ends the inning it was gone to Randolph to Murray to end the inning no runs one hit and one man left on the store at the end of four it cements for Montreal one and here's a word from Macy's Montreal for the Mets out of a three-game series both day games Saturday and Sunday we'll be on the air at 1:30 on today for our next broadcast it'll be Sid Fernandez against Kris nabholz and on Saturday Saberhagen will go against Gardner leadoff patent for the Mets stick schofield it had the big base hit back in the third after being hit by a pitch ball and he hits this ball foul down the left-field sign for strike one Scofield caiman in this game hitting 360 for one for one in this game he was the victim of a youth movement out at Anaheim Buck Rogers the former Expo Manager going with Gary disarcina at shortstop they've also dumped Luis Soho out of second base a former Toronto Blue Jay and gone in favor of young Bobby Rose so California a ballclub that's really rebuilding out there with Whitey Herzog at the helm of player personnel deemed and Schofield expendable and Ralph I saw Julio Valera throw in Texas on Wednesday night Met fans will be interested to know that he threw a pretty good ballgame he lost 3-2 but he gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings struck out eight and really had the forkball working this problem was the Mets just couldn't fit him into the rotation and a ground ball hit to the third baseman Barbara Reed he gets it over the first wanna run away remember when you're having good times and good friends drink responsibly because friends don't want to say when a reminder from your friends at Budweiser one away and Bobby venir the better Bobby walked his last time up after striking out his first and it's a fastball by Dennis Martinez for ball one Martinez on the verge of leaving for a pinch-hitter but that DoublePlay ball kept him in the ball game and the one open to change him for ball two two balls and no strikes Martinez lifetime record against immense eight wins and nine losses last year he was one-on-one against the Mets it's the perfect game on July 28th against the Dodgers and the pitch hit in the air to left-center field it will be a base hit dropping in front of Grissom in venire with his first hit and the Mets ever run around with one away fifth hit for the Mets and it brings up Howard Johnson and who has popped his short the two times he has been up [Applause] Howard struggling early in the year 100 ninety-eight home runs as a switcher to the old time leader we mentioned earlier Mickey Mantle with 136 in comes Eddie Murray with 398 then comes Reggie Smith with 314 and Ted Simmons with 248 and then Ken singleton with 246 the 8th X Mets player who did most of his heading for Baltimore after going to Baltimore from Montreal and he's right down the road doing a little radio work here in Montreal today I think for the Montreal there is broadcast and there he is wonderful guy I'm at Vernon New York Howard will definitely be up in the neighborhood of those guys I don't know if anybody will ever catch the mick 536 now Howard will definitely be up there in that 300 to 400 range if he keeps up it would be nice to see a couple of things here tonight see Howard Johnson get the bat going a bit he's hitting under 200 and also see David Cone to hold on for this win with Saberhagen going tomorrow and being rocked a couple of times then Brett maybe can relax a little more not feel like he's got to go out tomorrow and do it all himself and maybe put added pressure on and then you got Fernandez on Sunday this one could set the tone for the weekend in good fashion for the Mets if they can hold on and their lady maestro of four-to-one Bernhard first and one away in that pitcher ball there goes bunny and he steals a base so Bonilla gets his first of the year and the Mets taking advantage of a little relaxed defense Oh Ralph earlier you talked about Magadan stealing what three over two years there's Bobby Bonilla he stole two in a hundred and fifty seven games for the Pirates last year of course a lot of times he started out on second base too it's a lot of extra-base hits certainly not noted for stealing bases and he has a little fun with it Delino DeShields is giving him a hard time I said hey man you now have more steals this year than I do break so Romans had a stolen base already this year for Montreal this Shields has zero three and two you know talking about splits hitters majority of switch hitters in the Hall of Fame are pitchers very few of them in all thank you man look Horace Frankie fish now the 3-2 pitch hit on the ground to the second baseman DeShields who led the league in errors last year with 27 but he comes up with this one and on the play Bernie goes to third so I run our third with two men out and Eddie Murray the batter Eddie what's free big runs batted in in the third inning when he devilled over the third-base bag Dennis Martinez has worked over Howard Johnson really well tonight two pop ups and a grounder all three balls on the infield so Eddie Murray the batter 5-3 base it's so far this year and that's strike one 398 home runs as a switch-hitter Dave Winfield the only active player with more home runs than Eddie Murray Winfield with 407 the one strike pitch of all one-on-one Marie coming the meds from the dangers but most of his fabulous career with the Baltimore Orioles the 1-1 pitch fastball for ball two two balls in one strike and the combinations are fascinating this year with those three switch hitters back to back to back in the lineup no team has ever had three switch hitters hit 20 each in a season several teams have had three switch hitters hit ten but never twenty-eight and that unless one of these guys has a nightmare of a season or injury would almost be a certainty to happen just based on their track records two into the camp in fact Eddie Murray and the guy we talked about a few minutes ago Kenny singleton each hit 20 when they were with the Orioles from 77 through 80 they did it four consecutive years together never three aunty and the 2 2 pitch to Murray he takes the pass ball did he swing he did so harry wendellstat makes the call the third-base umpire and that will end the inning one hit and a runner left on in the score at the end of four and a half innings the Mets for the Montreal Expos 1 and here's a word from Budweiser [Music] our four to one bottom hand for the fifth inning we're going to see a change here as we're having a pinch-hitter Eric Bullock for the pitcher Dennis Martinez and evidently Felipe or Felipe Alou has taken over as manager with Runnels going out of the ballgame tom ejected by first base umpire Dana DeMuth and Philippe Alou who was an outstanding hitter and at one time hit with two other of his brothers against the Mets in one ballgame three three brothers in one game only time that ever happened in the major leagues and took place at the Polo Grounds against the Mets all hit the same inning and the first pitch to Bullock swung on a missed Bullock originally signed by the Dodgers bounced around a bit and a 2:22 from Montreal last year in 73 ballgames with one home run and David going misses one ball right duck Simon soaring in the pool a new pitcher for that was six then when baseball is missed one two this has not been a performance of we talent for David Cone in this game he has really had to struggle but he has turned to potential rallies and ass when he picked up two big devil plays one of the first one in the fourth missed again 2 & 2 he struck out only 1 giving up three hits - ball foul the way the can't stay two balls two strikes [Music] this year 14 and 14 last year and again the fastball fouled off lifetime record of 67 wins 42 losses he lost to the expose for his one loss this ball hit in the air to right-center field Bonilla Kohli and now Johnson London's veneer off the play makes the catch so I'm one away here in the bottom half of the fifth Dennis Martinez is gone and that will bring up this year airplane you get those stuff pictures out of the you're very happy about that even though the bullpens might be fairly strong nothing like getting that ace of the staff out of the game that brings up the land of the shields is 214 it takes first pitch for ball one and as long as you're ahead you can put any well count on the fact you're going to keep their best reliever on the bench down in the bullpen which help should cause down the line Expos we're looking for a big Martinez outing here tonight maybe grab one from the Mets to make it four in a row and then set the tone for the weekend but it's New York that's grabbed the momentum and see how it developed to rest to this game on into the starts by Saberhagen and Fernandez to mourn the canted this yields and the talented young ball player for Montreal takes four ball three gave up a promising basketball career to be a baseball player [Music] there's a strike three and two speaking they're talented athletes a leader the National League in hitting Deion Sanders at 450 - isn't he simple filed off against days of three balls and two strikes he might have as many triples as singles this year the way he's going he's also playing good defense with Otis Nixon not available on the long-range plans I think her for the Braves to platoon him a little bit against right-handed pitching but the word out of Atlanta is that neon Deon and his agent are starting to think baseball full-time Sanders leads the league in hits with 19 already ground ball to the shortstop score field two min away as DeShields is out and that will bring up Brett Barbary that's leading four to one what are the big problems John sure Holtz is going to have down there in Atlanta Deion Sanders makes about a million dollars a year playing football how do they give him that to make up for his loss football income and then keep some of the other young players like Dave Justice happy who's making far less than that potentially explosive situation down there because of the dollars involved and there is a strike that's us right now having problems with his back again my Asteria miss party few games because of a bad back did he go no he didn't towards a 1-1 count Ralph I think you'll see back problems in baseball until artificial turf is outlawed and then maybe that part of it will settle down a little bit but far too many back injuries going on and when you see it in a young guy like a Dave justice that really tells you something Andy Van Slyke having a lot of problems in Pittsburgh Jeff King has had problems [Applause] if it's is taken for a ball and swam one when you consider the fact that when you look at the artificial turf it looks nice and cushiony and bouncy but underneath it asphalt the pavement on the street free and - on the foul ball I have there Doubleday didn't really have this in mind when he embedded the game if he invented it I mean think heart bright had it in mind walking so Barbary works at a walk his third he's been up three times that puts rudder on with two banana brings up Yvonne Calderon who is that's the fifth walk given up by Cohen in this game and you could tell David was very upset with himself this is a guy you'd rather face leading off next inning throughout his career with the White Sox and now the Expos Paul Brown has been an outstanding RBI man and you just rather not see him up there even with two outs of the men at first base and the first pitch has taken thinking all away for called strike the Montreal player who did Saberhagen in when he was defeated by Montreal at Shea Stadium to run home one baseball puts him right on the ground that one is up and it is in and there you see call Tyrone turning into the baseball that left shoulder flies out that ball tails any further inside and might have gotten him on the hands and the pitch is high another fastball two and one I guess the guy you you could sue for that [Music] made the difference in banners diving into the ball is Charlie Lau and his disciple and weeks morning of the breaking ball two and two laughter he went down he vine looked over toward the Met dugout I don't think he's checking out the old Chicago skipper Jeff Torborg saying what are you doing to me out here and it's a fastball popped up in this channel right Renea has the easier of the play and he makes the catch to retire the side so a walking one left the score at the end of five it cements for in Montreal one here's a word from AT&T he has worked just part of an inning and he of course with the New York Mets last year for the full season was 2 & 3 with the Mets with one save in his major league debut he was a winning pitcher against the Phillies when the Mets came back to win the ballgame they tied it on a home run by Rick Cerrone and by Hubie Brooks and here for the play-by-play Bob carpenter all right Ralph thank you hedaan want to know Magadan got a pitch inside and fouled it off to the right dave has singled and grounded out 1 for 2 tonight Mets have four runs on five base hits they've knocked out Dennis Martinez [Music] and the left-hander comes on one and one and throws it alone outside ball to Magadan followed by Boston and O'Brien numbers six seven and eight for the Mets in the top of the sixth inning good fastball away from the hitter standpoint because it was up where Magadan could see it and he stroked it into left field so Magadan coming in 2 for 18 now 2 for 3 on the night and typical Magadan style as well Ralph one base hit up the middle the other one to the opposite field over 14 and now is picked up four hits in his last seven advanced and he hits that fastball just like he was taught another left-hander steps in Darrell Boston looking to bunt Mets haven't bunted the ball well tonight this going hasn't well we'll sacrifice twice now Boston fouls off the first one and Jeff Torborg thinking here is a lot of managers feel this way when you have three up approaching the late innings you go ahead and try to get that fourth run if you can because it takes the Grand Slam just to tie you in the odds that happening are small [Applause] [Applause] you don't often see teams sacrificing runners into scoring position ahead of the 8 and 9 hitters the number 8 man's number 8 man swinging the bat pretty well has an extra-base hit here tonight busting offered took the breaking ball and it's strike two there's Charlie O'Brien who back in the third got the four run rally started with a leadoff double hit the ball hard last time error by Wallach enabled him to get over there so it's kind of odd you never see or at least seldom see the number seven man plenty to give a number eight man a chance for an RBI probably because Boston has trouble with left-handers doesn't hit against them very often and it's really too early in the ballgame for a Jeff Torborg to make a move here he's up by three runs and he wants to keep his defense intact he'd make a move if he were in another position either tied or behind I'm sure he would reorder the right-hand batter in this spot but because of the situation being up by three he's thinking sacrifice and you think defensively in the outfield as well Simon's a fastball curveball changeup pitcher he's faced a couple of lefties so we really haven't seen the change which is a more effective pitch against a right-hander but he'll try to work Boston over here maybe with a breaking pitch gets an outside target instead back to wall Jeff Torborg with a count of one ball two strikes Mike coverage bouncing tour board signals out to the infield [Applause] it was a straight fastball and it hit Boston it just nicked his Jersey as it went by and on 1 & 2 the Mets get a huge break two left-handers get a board Charlie O'Brien to follow this ball just gets part of his uniform nice ball [Applause] early just ticked that uniform and that changes things around for the menses they have runners at first and second with Noah not very often you see a catcher cleanly catch a ball that hits a batter that's how little change of direction there was on the ball to Boston and a big spot for Charlie O'Brien Montreal bullpen will get busy again he was looking to bunt on that pitch wall like the first baseman was behind the runner and late as Montreal didn't think that the Mets would sacrifice in this situation with the pitcher coming up next [Applause] no Brian one for two on base twice [Applause] O'Brien now for 414 this year all doubles as Ralph mentioned earlier he asked for time and got it no pitch funny thing about that was until he realized time had been caught it looked like Magadan was running at second base something we might have been on there Charlie O'Brien might have been a little confused about it so he asked for time and now he just took a long look at my cabbage hit one play in this pot would have been a surprise for everyone they're going there it is fair ball into the corner Magadan will score easily Boston will score O'Brien has done it again and it's six to one New York they're going to have to start calling him that Charlie double O'Brien and it was a hit and run play with runners at first and second and th are born with tremendous imagination that you're coming up next said I'm not going to sacrifice go to put the runners of motion yet they have a lot of confidence in your hitter and O'Brien doubles again and then that's really taking the advantage of the runner in motion and now we're going to have a pitching change as you look at the ball going down the left-field line it hit in a area there where there is a box that contains the pitching Mountain and the Mets come up with two big hour runs batted in from O'Brien as he picks up his first two of the year and the Mets now out in front with a six to one lead now we know what kept that ball fair it was Jeff Torborg spotty English as he was watching that I don't think O'Brien thought that ball was going to be fair he did a little bit of a pause in the batter's box before he started running full steam so the Mets evidently had that play on the pitch before O'Brien confused about the call stepped out called time asked for it at least and then of course that it results in two runs as coverage waves Magadan and Boston home and here's the left-hander Symons to cone and he bunts it foul so a rather gutsy call by Jeff because with Megan and running on the previous play went I was called he would think the Mets accidentally gave something away didn't pitch at that spot when Kelly and then Jeff kept the play on six runs on seven hits Cowan has fanned twice after trying to punt lays a good one down this time they're covering third and the ball is thrown away O'Brien will score and cold will go to second base this time a good bunt by David Cone well Brian coming around the score after the ball was thrown away I don't believe that Simon's had a chance at all to get the out at third base Barbary the third baseman moving back to the bank Simon's goes over there and makes a very awkward throw a wild throw and it will be an error against the pitcher and the Mets get another and they lead by a score at 7 to 1 here's Willie Randolph you would have to think they haven't announced it they have announced the error you would have to think they would credit cone with a sacrifice and then the runner scores on the error nevertheless still nobody out and three runs in Randolph chops one so the Mets with a pair of big innings here tonight for in the third three so far here in the sixth and extra base hits by Charlie O'Brien right in the middle of all of them [Music] / bit alone two balls and a strike not a good outing for the former met against his ex-teammate Simons [Applause] and made a mistake against Boston that set this whole thing up so he can't blame just his defense and Boston in the hole he came inside with a fastball that Nick Darryl shirt instead of an out it was two on nobody out O'Brien the hit coned the sacrifice Randolph up there Scofield next and this one as well hit to center turning around as Chris soon finds it in time tagging his cone and the alert pitcher runs over to third with one out that ball was really hit hard a real good job of base running by David Cone if that ball gets over the head of the center fielder he did score easily you went back and tagged up and you'll see Grissom going back turning the wrong way and then turning back they picked the ball up and make the catch phone hanging up goes over to third makes the turn the wrong way and then comes back in to get in position to make the catch and you saw the Expos appealed the tag up play umpire said no Charlie Reliford said that Cone had tagged properly so Simon's is gone after a third of an inning giving up three runs and the Mets on top seven one pitching change coming up as we play here in the top of the sixth inning and here's a word from the US postal Express mail service an earned run average at three point eight six he's worked seven innings given up seven hits and he'll be working to the shortstop dick Schofield Samphan has been a reliever has been a starter for Montreal started eight ball games last year when he went nine and five appeared in 43 overall fastball slider pitcher and he'll take on Scofield with a runner at third one out cones the runner over there infield in and a breaking ball that's the slider that Scofield could not reach Dick's been hit by a pitch as driven a run home has scored a run he's won 4-2 overall there's the Montreal defense David Cone sacrifice with the second on an error as the plan which Charlie O'Brien's score breaking ball in the dirt Cohen will stay as Darren Fletcher fights it and finds it well let's breaking ball again down in the dirt Fletcher gets in front of it bounces pretty far away but cone stays the third the Mets are happy about that they don't want to lose him in a collision at home plate your night you're reading my mind Ralph when you're up seven one you don't want your pitcher sliding into home plate airplane will land right near the mouth of the paper variety maybe he was looking for the Information Center he didn't see the sign with the question mark on so he landed in the wrong place a ball and a strike to Scofield basketball well outside ball two Bobby Bonilla practicing is right-handed stroke does he think he's going to see a left-hander nobody's warming up down there this one is foul outside third if they sneak another one inside the bag the expose on a station Brett Barbary right on the line and concede the single Eddie Murray's put one down there for three runs Charlie O'Brien's put two of them down there and driven home a couple nets have been hugging the third-base line tonight and have seven runs on seven hits well his father sure was a smooth shortstop wasn't he ducky Medwick and finished up the 1960 season playing shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates after dick grote had his arm broken when he was hit by a pitch ball did a tremendous job wrote that year was the MVP of course the Pirates beat the Yankees in that unbelievable World Series in 60 you can't go to Pittsburgh for a pirate game without seeing nazarov skis flyball going over the Ivy and yogi watching it at the 406 mark left-center field yogi the left fielder looking at better nothing he could do three balls two strikes still only one out and now Schofield is aboard runners at the corners with Bobby Bonilla do up you know that was the has been for history of baseball the only game ever one and the last at-bat with a home run in the World Series it's amazing nearly 90 years of Series play there's Bobby who has a walker run scored a single and a stolen base he goes the other way this is fair into the corner Cohen will score Schofield around a third he will come home as well Bonilla stands up at second with a two-run double and he's got 9 RBIs on the year and it's a five-run sixth inning for the Mets over here with his second hit and again the Mets use that to base hit for their big blow as it's another double down the left-field line those runs go against the record of Simon he now has been charged with four and working the third of an Indian and it brings up Howard Johnson the eighth man to bat in this inning and he's the only met that hasn't been on base today popped up twice too short grounded out to second base it's 9 to 1 here in the 6th inning [Applause] and salmon wild to it out at last report the Pirates had come back at home Cecil espy had an extra-base hit they had come back to tie the Phillies Aaron's got four in the seventh I've actually taken the lead 5 to 4 in that game we'll update the other scores for you what they're the first-place team and the Mets have a chance if the Phillies can help to get within two games the first place today that amery has helped out three rbis and Howard takes four consecutive bad ones this is getting pretty ugly for the home team second walk by salmon in three hitters the other one in between doubled and now he'll face Eddie Murray nobody warming in the bullpen even an interim manager with his skipper ejected isn't going to waste his bullpen with a 911 we pair lose ninth man to bat in the inning is Eddie Murray an expose back hoping for the DoublePlay ball just to flip this inning to an end [Music] and the Expos pitching coach mr. Kerrigan is out there [Applause] so Carrigan the pitching coach replacing Larry Bernard who has taken a job with the expansion Club the Denver team in the Larry Marvin arthur course was with the met says one of their pitches in the early days of them it's not a social gathering out there in the mound but remember when you're having good times with good friends drink responsibly because friends know when to say one it's a reminder from your friends at Budweiser pictures always seem to throw good pitches after the pitching coach comes out he jammed Eddie with a fastball he took a weak swing and fouled it off what an one well the conversation usually goes get it over but don't give him anything good to hit gasps mom this thing glowing away former met Kevin McReynolds has homered tonight in the fifth inning off Scott Lewis of California but the Royals won and nine trails six to one of them Scott Lewis starting in a place of Chuck Finley who's nursing a bad tool for California Marie takes a shot at that lafiel line again and finally one goes foul talking about trips to the mound rube Walker who was the pitching coach of the Mets when I have one time when Tom Seaver is pitching for the Mets and see versus what are you doing out here he says Gil Hodges 7c4 says what go on back it sounds like some of McCarver's stories trying to visit Bob Gibson Houston says what are you doing out here all the time he hated to go out there on Gibson was there Gibson said that Tim McCarver he said the only thing you know about pitching it's tough to hit yeah the story I heard about Gibson was it he was the luckiest pitcher in the National League every time he went out there the other team wasn't hitting now that's luck isn't it better pick your spot dude to pitch Murray saw a pitch up and Eddie was pumping on that one an excruciating inning for the fans here in Montreal they've been sitting here for about a half hour watching this one out five runs her home two men on and a bouncer up the middle should be a couple the shields Owen and wallet for six three and they're out of their misery at the Big O but the Mets tack on five more on only three base hits in the middle of the sixth there on top nine one and here's a work from sharp [Music] [Applause] the game as far as David Cone the two double plays that he got when he was in deep trouble once in the first and once in the four absolutely that one in the first inning suppose really had a chance to jump all over him they had second and third nobody out called their own Walker and Wallach could not score here's Larry Walker and on the first pitch he fouls one off Walker a chance to be a real hero here in Canada he was born in Canada coming down very strongly last year to finish with an outstanding season and he's blossoming into one of the best Canadian ball players that has hit the scene there been some great players out of Canada but none of them playing for the Montreal Expos as an everyday player Claude Raymond a pitcher is an outstanding pitcher for Montreal also a broadcaster now for the Expo breaking ball down low hit to Randolph and Walker from Maple Ridge British Columbia is out and that's how the bottom of the sixth inning gets underway Claude Ramone a french-canadian from this area Ferguson Jenkins comes to mind and have a Twinkle Toes George Selkirk does that name ring a bell to you Twinkle Toes does one pitch Wallach is out that's two down Selkirk was the outfielder that replaced Babe Ruth for the New York ink Canadian lifetime 290 batting average with a hundred eight home runs but probably one of the best Canadian players ever to play with Jeff Heath we need a hundred and ninety four home runs and had a 293 lifetime batting average you know I just had a thought Ralph anybody following Babe Ruth would look like twinkle toes out there this one is over the head Darryl Boston is marquise grissom will he hit that ball a long way it appeared he reached out to the outer part of the strike zone to get it and that ball may have fooled Boston a bit as marquise grissom muscled up a little bit here he needs this base hit he had been all for 11 and Boston suddenly misjudges it unable to get back to get it Marquis does the one hand job here that ball had to hit right on the sweet spot to go that far here's Darren Fletcher he goes to the shortstop charging a Scofield on the run right on target and the Expos are gone they strand their sixth runner and we're moving on to the late innings down David Cone cruising with an eight run lead it's nine one Mets and here's the work from New York Newsday [Music] welcome back to Olympic Stadium in Montreal on to the seventh inning we moved Mets on top nine one Bob carpenter with Ralph Kiner it's a McCarver on assignment they'll be checking out the action in st. Louis tomorrow Cardinals are entertaining the Cubs that's always a wild weekend in the gateway city they've got Maddux and de Leon throwing tonight we'll update the scoreboard for you in a little bit and the man who led off last inning will do the same here in the seventh Dave Magadan who's 2 for 3 suddenly the bat is smoking sampan throws a high fastball Magadan has singled up the middle and till I feel this past fall up high as well let's have some action as Wally Whitehurst just throwing and now Tim Burke before murex pol anyone go bullpens are very close to the action here so other Mets pitchers are handling the guarding shooters down there when they first reconfigured the stadium last year those bullpens were even closer to home plate than they are now and I remember Doug Harvey showing up one night and he threw a fit when he saw where the bullpens were I told the Expos in there then general manager Dave Dombrowski get those babies down the line a little further I think the bullpens at that time around for something like a hundred and ten feet from home plate now they probably got him down there about a 150 feet away interesting how they built that pitching mound there it's sort of like the one they had in Joe Robbie Stadium that everybody complained about it's in they elevated box with the dirt piled up on top all kinds of directions when they hit in that area there you see that box it can be very dangerous for outfielders approaching the barrier looking after pop files looks like it's worth around maybe while we have a second here I've got a little bone of contention you said something derogatory about Babe Ruth and they're coming out they're coming out with a picture I think it's out this weekend about Babe Ruth Joe Goodman is playing it and of course John weighs about 300 pounds yeah he had to lose 40 to play Babe Ruth now how's that but the strange thing is that and nobody ever talks about this Babe Ruth in his prime was about a hundred ninety pounds and he is one of the greatest athletes to ever play this game all anybody remembers about Babe Ruth was his last a year or so when he was very heavy but he never played that way you don't hit all those home runs and be one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game and be that far out of shape absolutely but he's always portrayed as a big fat guy and he was anything but that he was lean and mean when he was in his prime unfortunately that's a movies for you darrel Boston it was a dandy breaking ball that salmon through to strikeout Magadan his first cake two balls no strikes Erol Ofra - he scored a run after being hit by a fit and bill Steffen the radar is way off target tonight on that fastball he hasn't had the fastball around the plate at all and if you're going to be a 2 pitch pitcher you better be throwing both of them for strikes boston walks on for pretty lousy fast balls to be quite honest that's his third walk checkout the Macy's National League scoreboard it's now a final Pirates have beaten the Phillies coming from behind 7/4 Astros have a run in the seventh Cardinals and cup scoreless early its Rijo and downs at San Francisco Glavine and Martinez pitching at LA tonight we have a little rain delay at Busch Stadium in st. Louis that's why the Cubs and cards are only in the second so the Mets will have to win tonight to stay three back of the Pirates who are now seven and two and Charlie O'Brien working on a big night on base three times two runs scored and he's doubled his RBI total for the year had 14 all of last season when he appeared in 69 games hitting just 185 if O'Brien plays well defensively which you figure he will and hits well enables the Mets to do some things they don't have to have Todd Hundley out there every day trying to force-feed him at the major league level we'll say save some wear and tear on all the catchers ralphe backup catchers play a lot more than they used to now there's no doubt about the fact that the Mets can really use a little more power out of home he's showing some here early in the season he's a fine defensive catcher and on to know Charlie was taking all the way all of us hits this year have been two base hits he's had five the all-time leader and two base hits Tris speaker was 792 Charlie's got something issues he had a little bit to go pardon me that was a 2-1 pitch and now the counts even two to breaking ball Danny hung right with it [Applause] demanded first one out elio Brian laughing he's relaxing the plate feeling good did all those doubles you gotta feel good there's our wide open stance again assball again nowhere near the strike zone the count goes to 3 and 2 Charlie and his counterpart Darren Fletcher having a little fun in a 9 1 ballgame top of the seventh at Olympic Stadium Montreal he got fist it dumps one into right-center over to get it Larry Walker and that's the second out [Applause] O'Brien to four for David Cone will be next and the Toyota American League scoreboard Indians are all over the Yankees 6:1 Nagy and Sanderson the starters there boy four homers for the blue for the Indians there scoreless in Boston Brewers have won Baltimore on top Minnesota for nothing California big @kc despite a McReynolds homer and the Rangers lead Oakland 3 nothing middle innings for that Cleveland ballclub Albert Bell Marc Whitten Carlos Baerga and Roberto Alomar have all homer to back Charles Nagy on the way that's the Toyota American League scoreboard [Applause] we met a momentary pause while the police assured a trespasser out of here first pitch to David Cone basket ball away fastball down low to a No david has struck out a couple of times did sacrifice last time up and he was going for it all right there he was thinking first career home run but he couldn't get it home run swing put a good move on it if the ball was mine now he chops one weakly back to Stefan who will throw him out and it's seventh-inning stretch time at the Big O and Montreal Mets strand their sixth runner but after six and a half they're all over the Expos by a score of 91 and we'll return right after this message mama Leone's will treat her to dinner all women 15 and over attending the 140 game against the Dodgers received a $25 gift certificate good for dinner at mama Leone's restaurant located at 261 West 44th in Manhattan call Ticketmaster at 2 1 2 3 o 7 Mets to charge tickets by phone or 7 1 8 5 o 7 TI XX for more information the 92 Mets Heart Ball is back we hope you are on Mother's Day Kris Donald's called up recently as Ralph told you early in the ballgame tonight is in at third base for in New York 9 1 game Jeff Torborg trying to mix in some playing time for a couple of guys so there's a new third baseman and a new right fielder is Dave Gallagher bottom of the seventh coming up David Cone out there kind of an unusual uncon like performance tonight he's walked five struck out only one but he finds himself with a big lead approaching the late innings and to take you the rest of the way maybe David Cone but we're sure about Ralph Kiner okay Bob and David going if he can lead the league in strikeouts this year and he came in leading the league with 20 strikeouts before today's ballgame will be the first pitch of the lead the league three consecutive years since Warren Spahn left-hander won more games than he left history of baseball in the hall of fame but cone the struck out only one in this game but he's on top by score of 9 to 1 [Applause] and go on the basis most accent we've seen here by Montreal fans since we've been coming here dating back to 1969 that hockey strike has really got to him Oh they've lost it [Applause] so chrome will be working to spike Owen as his first batter spike is old for two in the game and he killed a rally when he hit into a double play back in the fourth inning then the first pitch by corner ball and a little flyball to right field Gallagher with his first chance and it's one away that's leading by a score of nine to one and we're going to have a pinch-hitter for the pitcher expos will call on infielder tom fully defensive specialist who's a popular player here so the veteran time fully to pinch-hit for bill Sammon and the first pitch hit in the air to right-field the long run for Gallagher he has time to get underneath it and he makes the play so two quick outs here as Foley flies out to right he hit to 13 last year with no home runs and cone the vetting order will be the line of the shields who has two hits in three at-bats the shields with a single and a double the devil off the globe of the second baseman brand off and three advance in the first pitch hit hard the first taken by Murray in a very quick 1-2-3 inning for David Cone and the score at the end of seven its immense nine and the Montreal Expos 1 and here's a word from so no goal like the Mets had a day off yesterday so they don't need their fifth starter at the moment so Chris Haney gets a little work in a relief role mop up rule here tonight he spits one ball game five innings those were his numbers Haney's 23 year-old left-hander from Baltimore and he throws the fastball curveball change he was up for a spell with the Expos last year three and seven he was in 16 starts that was one win a starting performance against the New York Mets one in the Montreal swept the Mets the three-game series in New York and his first pitch taken outside for ball one Willie Randolph leading off for the Mets here in the eighth inning Willie old for three tonight and hitting his fastball again ball two two and all Annie's dad was the pitching coach for Milwaukee and there's a strike in the count 2 and 1 Mets leading 9 to 1 they got four runs in the third and five runs in the sixth a pitcher record on the losing side Dennis Martinez and that pitch a fastball fouled off and it's 2 & 2 they brought here tonight somewhere over 22,000 outside a very cold evening flying in here look down at the ice on the river st. Lawrence and snow around but this stadium is covered fortunately and again the foul ball if you want to take a look at a ceiling that is in jeopardy they have it right here there are patches all over you could see the patches off on the side there in the right and this ceiling is deteriorating to the point where they're going to have to put a permanent roof on it which will cost somewhere around 20 million dollars and this overall complex for the Olympic Games was a billion dollars to build any ground ball to second base and brand off as out as the Scheels comes up at the ball makes the play only nobody beats the whizz game summary Murray with free runs batted in bonier with two runs batted in O'Brien with two doubles and two RBIs DeShields two for four and the Mets lidium I scored nine to one as David Cone works on his first victory of the year Dennis Martinez the starter on the losing side and the batter dick Schofield takes the first pitch at curveball for called strike Schofield 1 for 2 with a walk he also was hit by a pitch ball and the fastball 101 it's back this change of pace and a good woman to I don't see many splitters from left-handers that appeared to be one from Haiti that ball has some wicked downward movement to it and the pitch back is hit at the left field a base hit over there the field of this counter run going for two is full field and he goes in safely and Schofield continues to hit well for the New York Mets his second hit of the night on base four times hustling with his team up by eight he got a pitch down and hit it well into left field Paul had to range far toward the line then wait for the big hop off the turf years ago this sort of thing may not have been looked upon to kindly taking the extra base when you're leading by eight but Ralph it's it is a different ballgame down you got a play and really knocked out at all and that pitch is in there for a call strike two Gallagher who is hitting in vania's place but Nia in this game two for three with a walk and Gallagher replaced him he fouls this one off calendar hitting 364 and he has had some big hits for the Mets a game-winner in their last victory the fastball fouled away the architect of this complex Roger talib air he asked him about the cost of this stadium which run along with the rest of the complex over a billion dollars he says in a few years nobody will ever remember the cost why not enjoy it but they do remember it up there the roof is made out of Kevlar and it's used in bulletproofing vests for the protection against bullets and it has not lasted it has really been a problem ripped up last year where they couldn't even move it back and forth by one storm and it's going to have to be replaced [Applause] one into the count the infield is coming in for a play at the plate at this stage and the ball hit out the right field is deep enough to score the run then coming in the store this go field the Mets now lead by a score of 10 to 1 that'll bring up our Johnson looking for his first hit he has walked but his old for three tonight and Horan has popped out twice and granted an in his first pitch taken for ball one that's ten runs on nine bases there's ball two two balls and no strikes all three three no Amy the fourth pitcher used by the Expos Dennis Martinez started lasted five than Doug Simon's bill Sammon and now Chris Haney and Haiti with a three old delivery walked him on four pitches so Johnson twice has walked on four pitches his last two times up as a matter of fact let's get their fifth walk on the ball game to go with their nine base hits and that'll bring up Eddie Murray drove in three with a double back in the third and is one for four the way the Mets bullpen continues to throw you get the feeling that David Cone with a nine run lead may have thrown his last pitch of the night continue to work down there Paul Gibson and Jeff in its own though still in the dugout rather unusual performance for David Cote only one strikeout and not really in command of this ballgame but two double play balls got him out of jams when the Mets were battling in the ball game since then they have broken it open and we got a pinch-hitter Mackey Sasser hitting for Eddie Murray and he takes the first pitch for ball one McRae is taking over as the pinch runner for Howard Johnson Rodney McCray and this ball hit up the middle by Sasser and McRae on his way to third he'll go with no play Broll going in the second base and runners not first in third his censer gets his third hit of the year in an 11 advance well there's the young man one of those transactions we talked about before the game with Vince Coleman hurt Mets needed a little speed and some depth in the outfield McRae fills both of those roles and here's a little infield depth as Donald steps in Kris Donald's just brought up from Ty Murray water he was hitting 368 down there with two home runs seven hits the 19 advanced and batting for the first time taking the pitch full ball one donal saw some time of the mets last year pioneered tybone Gorgons strike one ball one strike and a breaking ball for a ball 2 & 1 [Applause] and this fastball fouled away the cab 2 & 2 that's on their way to winning their first game against Montreal this year they lost three in a row to Montreal at Shea Stadium but then the Mets bounced back to win two in a row from Philadelphia after extending their losing streak after the Expos by losing the first game to the Phillies and if the Mets won here tonight the record will be five and six on the year with a three-game winning streak and the fastball foul so of to to count afternoon Saberhagen going for the Mets against mark Gardner and then on Sunday Sid Fernandez against Chris Neville Jeff Charbroil finally getting this team straighten out another good curveball for strike three that end let's get one run on two hits and they leave - and the score at the end of seven and a half innings amends ten and Montreal one now here's a word from your tri-state Toyota dealer there are many ways to show the world you're a real Mets fan [Music] personally I prefer this the Mets MasterCard from Chemical Bank it has all the advantages of MasterCard plus a great lineup of special meds benefits you can even use your meds MasterCard to buy tickets to see your favorite team the mint the Mets MasterCard if finally something fit just right like the new j30 from infinity now that's my definition of luxury it's a car you just slipped right into and live happily ever after infinity it makes you want to take up driving again doesn't it [Music] well events leading by a score of ten to one as we go to the bottom of the eighth inning new centerfielder for the Mets Rodney McCray who has taken over for Howard Johnson and at first base Mackey Sasser has replaced at Emory at first base and David Cone going here in the eighth inning we'll be working to read Barberie as his first batter Barberie has been on all three times [Music] expos have not won a ball game at night and it looks like they will continue that streak as they trail by man they are old four-four come to McCray and center one away [Applause] well some may wonder why is David Cohen still out there with a nine run lead he's been a retiring hitter so easily lately Ralph I think last inning he threw six or seven pitches got his man there on just a couple he's not throwing much out there at all so it's not like he's taxing his arm or shoulder in an unnecessary situation it's kind of free and easy for him right now and he goes the curveball on the first pits to Calderon and it's ball one on all four three betting for the fourth time and again ball it's two balls and no strikes Montreal trailing by 9 the Mets got four on the top of the 3rd Montreal got one of those four back then I meant with five runs in the sixth setting the lead 9 the one they tagged out and one more in the 8th and here in the bottom half the 8th inning the Mets are leading 10 to 1 as Montreal bats and there's one the right field for a base hit for cowboy so he gets his first out of the game that's only the fifth hit given up by Cohen and it will bring up Larry Walker Walker over two of the walk David Cone through seven innings had thrown a hundred and ten pitches so he's around a hundred and seventeen hundred and eighteen right now he's walked five but it has struck out only one was gauged his pitch count down but I would say Ralph over the last three innings he's probably only thrown about 30 pitches or so Walker old for two has grounded out twice he also has walked and this ball grounded out to the first base side Cohen trying to fill it and Walker is out I think David cones claiming he tagged Walker just as he caught the ball and the throw was unnecessary tough call for the umpire who's trailing to play Randy Marsh see if he got the tag on it actually ran into Kona looks like and he's after interference a fielder has a right to the ball so Walker's out about three different ways interference by tag in by force maybe four is he ran out of the lane there so they got him on all accounts and it's two month away on the out Calderon goes down to second that was a smart play by David Cone because had he not gotten aggressive and charged that ball it would have squib foul so by hustling he earned himself an out now Tim Wallach Nevada wanted with a double and three advanced leads the National League in doubles with six or the season and two base hits and it's off its waterline and in the eighth-inning when you see a pitcher get a low fastball by Tim Wallach you know he's got good stuff in good velocity because this guy is a dead lowball hitter back to the first inning Wallach hit into a double play for what was a very big out at that time there's that low fastball and he does golf sit in the left field coming around the score is Palawan vo gets his second run of the ballgame and Wally gets a run batted in [Applause] ralick likes the ball down there like a breaking ball that had a little tight rotation on it and while it just strokes it into left field they'll Boston just holding the runner at first not attempting a throw with two outs and the big lead that brings up marquise grissom and the fastball for ball one [Applause] Grissom with a double and two official of bats also has walk and fastball back for a ball two and out [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the fastball fouled back into the stands two balls one strike and another fan running feel the security here is deplorable [Applause] David comb with a can of three and one trying to pick up his first win this year last year 1414 he's six and five lifetime against Montreal suppose in picture to the expose on the 11th of April 1 7 a leopard in this game he struck out only one and he is on the win side of the game and Grissom helps him out as he goes after a bad pitch and that runs the count to three and to Grissom with his double back in the sixth inning look at all four 11th Street three and two was gone coming back to the plate the ball was foul back out of play and all like the runner at first base will return to first [Applause] Wally will be going with a not being held the ball is hit in the air to Center my prey tempis right there that will retire the side one run on two hits one left to score at the end of eight that's ten and Montreal two and here's a word from your time tri-state Toyota dealer [Music] it's Toyota's automotive achievement award celebration saluting the Great's of 92 for best overall value in AT&T your friends are your business keeping you connected to them is ours I'm Brenda Blackmon after the game plans for a big subway cutback a tragic fire during a Passover observance and the new movie about Babe Ruth right after the game join us onew get you in the game for montreal formerly with immense Rick Cerrone John Vander Waal is now in left field in the game replacing Calhoun there is Jonathan left and Daryl Boston swings at the first pitch and hits it fat Matt's leading 10 to 2 [Applause] we're in the town for the 9th inning it will be Darrell Boston leading now put Charlie O'Brien to follow and the pitch back of breaking ball as Chris Heaney works his second inning gave up a run on two hits when he came in the game in the eighth inning the curveball hangs inside two balls in one strike Boston in this game bold for two he also has been hit by a pitch ball and has walked to one pitch and it's lined to left field and they're all the left fielder takes it on the hop the Mets have their 11th base hit Boston gets his first and that'll bring up Charlie O'Brien Brian to four for both of his hits doubles all of us has sis here have been doubles he has five and a ground ball to the shortstop fine play by Owen as he gets the force play at second a return throw by the seals on the first base in time for a double play in a finally executed double play spike Owen doesn't have as much range as he used to but he got over in good fashion and look at the quick release and then great athletic ability on the turn by DeShields Darryl Boston had designs about breaking that thing up and he looked up and DeShields was gone he was a phantom out there disappeared as David Cone bats and he fouls off for fastball third DoublePlay turned by Montreal O'Brien continues to hit the ball hard Ralph even when retired tonight he's hit the ball hard twice to go along with his two doubles and there's a strike he has had a great night he's had a good pass three games two strikes that can't the cone and fits back swung on a missed and Cohen is out so one hit and the double play no one left the score at the end of a turn Apennines it's the Mets Tim Montreal Expos - and added control of anti-lock brakes and the reassurance of a driver side airbag the Cadillac Seville drive one soon at your Cadillac try Statesman it could change the way you think about American automobiles don't be fooled by misleading ads get the advertised product at the advertised price buy from someone you trust nobody beats the whiz well Mets baseball 92 has been brought to you by Bud Light everything else is just a light by your lincoln-mercury dealers I coca-cola enjoy allumettes excitement with coca-cola classic and beat the real thing I 18t proud sponsor the 1992 US Olympic team by Macy's we're part of your life and enter in the Big O we are going to the bottom of the ninth inning the Mets leading by a score 10 to 2 and the first pitch by David Cone swung on and fouled away Korona has given up two runs John Vander Hall is the batter here batting in the position of the catcher Darren Fletcher a switch in the lineup as Cerrone and Vander Hall came into the ballgame at the same time a swing and a Miss for strike to one ball and two strikes Randy Hall hit him 167 he's had one hit in six at-bats [Applause] and of all call two and two [Music] David gone trying to be the second Mets pitcher to have a complete game this year the first battle signals the right here in the ninth-inning so with a runner at first and Omaha we'd like to remind you that this game has been brought to you by the United States Postal Service proud to be an official sponsor of the 1992 Olympic Games and also by your tri-state Toyota dealers I love what you do for me Toyota and now the batter spike on and the pitch is taken for strike one on in this game hold for three in the fridge bag one ball and one strike [Music] I made two double plays in this game and both of them very big plays for David Cohen when the game is closed all I get into the first run in the first inning with the bases loaded and that was for the final two outs of the first and then spike Owen hit into a double play but runners at first and second and one out in the fourth inning the 1 2 pitch fouled back the count stays in one ball and two strikes mence with four runs in the third five runs in the sixth inning and another in the eighth leading 10 to 2 and the fastball fouled off so the count again remains of one ball and two strikes our keys see on Franco is on deck to be appreciated an astronomer sand cone gets his second strikeout of the ball game only his second strikeout his first coming back in the third and it was the pitcher Dennis Martinez and it's not like this will ever be a trend for David Cone who's a strikeout pitcher but a couple of times in his career he's had very low strikeout totals but the bottom line was at W four years ago against the Pirates one strikeout in eight innings he beat the Bucs six to three years ago in April two strikeouts against the Cardinals in nine innings he wins nine to four it's been a while since it's happened but a very odd that W about to happen for David Cone here tonight and it's still a job for my coverage as he moves the defense around as our key seein Franco pinch hits Seon Franco with his first major league hit against the New York Mets and he did something that very very few people have ever done his base hit his first major league base it was a single but it drove in three runs it came in a 3-2 pitch off of timbered and the runners going with a pitch with the bases loaded when he singled in three runs and that fits the ball is one ball and one strike he has had three hits so far this year and that one base it has given him all of his RBIs for the year born in Rome New York that's not too far from here this past list is extremely high to him one account [Applause] this boats it in the air too it's fairly deep back there is Gallagher and he makes the catch and the Expos are down to their last out [Applause] Bandar Hall back to first base and David gone and out away from getting a complete game will be the men's second this year the batter coming up the lineman does shields the shields with two hits and forward bats and that picture ball diana haun I've been being held on at first base and time is called as the ball rolls out of the field [Applause] two min away bottom of the ninth inning the Mets living 10:00 to 2:00 and out of way from picking up a third win in a row Oh foul back out of play one ball and one strike to DeShields Jeff Torborg the manager the mints with the jacket and Mel stottlemyre the pitching coach and a ball called two and one for the laughter here for the New York Mets considerably different from the three-game series with Montreal it chased it even when the Expos won all three - and - so gonna strike away from picking up the victory and strike three on the swing and home plate umpire Randy Marsh and that's the ball game John gets his third strikeout and he picks up his first win of the year is record now one and one a complete game and the Mets win it by a score of 10 to 2 the losing pitcher Dennis Martinez says record now 1 & 2 and we'll be back for the recap right after this board from Bud Light [Music] matters but he got a two real big jams when he got double play balls and went on to win an easy ballgame his first victory of the year and now Saberhagen is out there and he's trying to do the same thing and the biggest thing really for a guy like Tony even even though he's been very successful in the major leagues and the same thing with Saberhagen is getting the first win under their belt I was pressing when he changed legs like Saberhagen has done coming to the Mets from Kansas City and he so far has not done well at all although we had a tremendous spring he looked very good and he has the kind of stuff where he's got to win and of course the the Mets needed some wins under dirt under their belt because when they were losing in New York they were getting hammered in New York like it was September but the Expos beat him three straight they come up here they beat the Expos last night and they're looking for some revenge here at the big o well the Mets lost four in a row at home and then came back to win the final two games and have won one here in the road so they got a chance to make it a 500 for the season if they can win here today well talking to Barry foot on the pregame show somebody that's kind of forgotten I've always been a little bit under the weather but Charlie O'Brien flannel more than Todd Hundley and I thought Barry foot made an interesting statement you got to get him some advance and get his confidence up but if if the manager doesn't show confidence Indian Todd honey he's never gonna impound notice awfully early yet and of course he did get that bug that he had and he was out of the lineup because of that and he'll be in there there's no question about that interesting about Charlie O'Brien he's had five hits this year they've all been to base it's no singles no other type of hit and it's very foot sit on the pregame show Charlie O'Brien a fine defensive catcher so if he hits they have a dilemma a pleasant dilemma with the Mets but still a dilemma anyways stay with us here at the big go in Montreal Canada it'll be the Expos against the Mets we gave you
